Tone up that tannenbaum More than just greenery for the tree
Here, three interior designers help sort out some options and share advice on stylishly decorating with holiday trees and branches, even in households where Christmas isn’t celebrated.
Exquisitely artificial
MELISSA RAYWORTH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS For generations, the choice was simple: 1. Strap a live Christmas tree to the roof of your car, wrestle it into a tree stand at home and hope it wouldn’t fall over. Or, 2. Put up an artificial tree that was unmistakably fake. Fortunately, the options have expanded dramatically, from realistic fake trees prelit with glowing LED lights to environmentally friendly abstract “trees” made from reclaimed shipping pallets. Options for a real live tree include “white-glove” service that includes delivery and professional setup.
Designer Brian Patrick Flynn, founder of Flynnside Out Productions, loves the look and scent of real trees. But he is “hands down, 100 per cent on Team Artificial,” thanks to the convenience and range of today’s fake trees. White trees are “excellent for more elegant, sophisticated spaces,” Flynn says. He layers on ornaments in shades of white and metallics “for a less-is-more, toneon-tone look.” Designer Lee Kleinhelter, founder of the Pieces home decor store in Atlanta, agrees. She uses a highquality fake white tree in her home because “it feels

Flynn suggests the white flocking tones down the vivid green of the artificial trees, making them fit more effortlessly with any colour scheme. a little moder n and is a clean slate where I can use interesting objects to accessorize.” If you can’t quite imagine your handmade or hand-medown ornaments on a sleek
white tree, consider getting a real tree for keepsake ornaments and putting a white tree in another location, perhaps near the front door and decked out in monochromatic ornaments. Sarah Fish-
burne, director of trend and design for The Home Depot, says many Americans now use one fake tree and one real one. If white isn’t your style, Flynn recommends real-
istic fake green trees with a “woodsy, rustic” look, or fake green trees coated with fake white snow, which are called “flocked” trees.

Growth an investment in our city’s future STU NIEBERGALL As everyone well knows in Regina, we have been experiencing several years of economic, population and community growth in our city. One of the most obvious and profound beneficiaries of this growth has been the residential housing industry and the more than 5,000 people who are directly or indirectly employed in the industry. According to Statistics Canada, the City of Regina census metropolitan area, which includes the surrounding communities, grew by about 15,000 people from 2001 to 2010. Since then we have gained another approximately 14,000 residents in the Regina CMA. You can see the impact of this population growth in our housing starts. In 2001, Regina had 626 new housing starts. A decade later, 10,332 homes were added to the Regina area housing supply. Since 2011 (includ-
ing our estimate of where we will end up at in 2014) 10,066 new homes have been added. This is important for two reasons. Over the past year, there has been a fair bit of speculation the industry has significantly overestimated housing demand, resulting in “significantly higher new home inventory” as Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. stated earlier this week. I would not completely disagree; there is some excess inventory for the short-term in the Regina market. What this means for home buyers is this could be a great time to look at some of the built-up inventory as an opportunity to purchase a newly built home. Looking back over the longer term, however, what has been demonstrated is the housing market does build close to the population demand. The second reason our population growth numbers are important to understand goes to the heart of how our community feels about growth. I moved to Regina in 1991. That year was significant in the Regina housing market as there were only 189 new homes built that entire year. The city was
almost at a standstill in terms of growth. I grew up in the boom/ bust cycles of Alberta, so I was not surprised to hear from friends and family in Alberta, “why would you move to Regina?” What I was not expecting was how my new colleagues and friends in Regina also asked me the same question, “why would you move here from Alberta?” In 1992, Regina and area was desperate for growth. From my perspective, growth in our community is precious because of the far-reaching benefits. There is no doubt there are many factors that impact whether a community will grow or not. Many of those factors are out of local control. However, one factor is very much in the community’s control and that is growth occurs when it is sought. Growth is not a penalty or imposition on the pre-existing city; it is a source of its ongoing lifeforce. New faces, new families, greater cultural diversity, greater economic investment refreshes our community and brings out new options. People who come to our community are assets, not problems; new people and growth,
most importantly, add vibrancy and variety that enhance quality of life and the range of economic opportunity. I was perturbed this week when the City of Regina deliberated on the one per cent dedicated mill rate increase for residential road improvement. Some chose to refer to this as a tax “caused by growth.” I wondered which growth horizon they were speaking about. Growth in the 1960s when Regina added over 40,000 people to the community? Or was it the 1970s when the city population grew by 27,000 or maybe they were referring to the 1980s when our population grew by 23,000? After all, it will be many of the roads built in those eras that will receive the benefit from this one per cent dedicated mill rate increase. It will not be Regina’s newest communities; they do not need road improvements as those streets are brand new. Yes, someday they will need to be repaired and the city will need to find a financial mechanism to repair those roads, but that is how cities work. From an overarching economic perspective, growth does pay for growth in our community. For
starters it adds to the expansion of our tax base, which the city, as a government, can use to finance ongoing infrastructure and service needs. It is faith in the future return on today’s investment that will truly determine whether our community embraces growth or deters it. Our civic government leaders, citizens, stakeholder advocacy groups like ours, right down to individual taxpayers, need to really understand what is truly important in our discussions and comments on growth. It is unhealthy and departs from what has made Regina a great city to focus only on the immediate. Such thinking shrinks the conceptual horizon to a closed-in and fearful approach, a naive perspective oriented only to preservation, instead of toward growth and its concomitant improvement in our quality of life. In framing municipal policy for the future, the City of Regina and citizens will contribute best to the city as a community by acknowledging, internalizing and being driven by an outlook that growth is an investment in our city’s future and not simply portrayed as a possible cost borne by taxpayers today.
Greenery Think safe, simple and easily seen CONTINUED FROM F1 “Flocked trees add amazing texture and can really tone down the overall greenness of an artificial tree, making it a little softer,” he says. He has created flat, abstract trees out of plywood, covering them with festive fabric secured with brass nail heads. And he has two “trees” made from reclaimed shipping pallets. “To make them,” he says, “the pallets were dismantled, painted dark green, then assembled with screws. It’s a more sculptural approach and it doesn’t require any decorating whatsoever.”
Really easy Beginning this year, Home Depot is making it simpler to bring home a full-sized real tree with “white-glove” delivery service, says Fishburne. Choose a tree online and the company will bring it
to your home and set it up in the stand for you. Another way to make real trees more manageable is to buy several small, potted trees in varying sizes rather than one large one. “Groupings of trees really make an impact in any space,” Flynn says, “and if you’re going the untraditional route, or don’t have lots of windows to dress up or have an actual fireplace mantel, I think a grouping of trees in one spot creates enough of a focal point and it can stand on its own.”
Simple and safe Pre-lit LED trees save you the time and effort of stringing lights. Some models also resolve any arguments over whether to use white lights or coloured ones, says Fishburne; you can buy LED-lit trees that let you switch between them. LED lights also don’t burn as hot as traditional bulbs, so they may be a safer option, especially
for rooms where children play and might try to touch the tree.
Best locations Once you’ve chosen your tree, where should you put it? “The size and scale of your house can dictate a tall skinny tree by a staircase or a more round robust tree in a sunroom visible to the street,” Kleinhelter says. Rather than tucking your tree into a corner, she suggests finding a spot “where you can enjoy the tree on all sides.” If you have a large “showstopper of a front window” that faces the street, Fishburne suggests placing the tree there. “There’s something really lovely about coming home to that big tree in the window,” she says. It’s easy to put tree lights on a timer so they glow on schedule each evening. Flynn agrees “if you really want your tree to make an impact inside and outside, sticking with a room

toward the front of the home is the way to go.” But for maximum enjoyment, he says, “it’s also wise to make sure it’s just as much of a focal point from adjacent rooms as it is inside the space and from outside of the house.”
Non-Christmas trees All three designers mentioned it can be beautiful to use undecorated trees or branches to celebrate the season, whether or not you celebrate Christmas. “It’s more about the warmth of gathering with friends and family during the colder months,” Flynn says.

MAKE IT RIGHT
Healthy holiday home tips MIKE HOLMES Make it Right
RESTORATION HARDWARE
Remote controlled flameless candles are available at Restoration Hardware.
A touch of seasonal sparkle can set the mood Pillars of the Community
REBECCA KEILLOR FOR POSTMEDIA NEWS
Invest in a few of the remote controlled indoor/ outdoor flameless candles at Restoration Hardware and use them year round. Battery operated and in a range of sizes and prices these candles will work just as well on your table top or mantle as on your porch or in your garden. Restoration Hardware | $19 to $49
Designers (all of them — interior, industrial, you name it) rave on about the importance of lighting in a space and this is only heightened when entertaining, especially during the Christmas season. The good news is there are some easy and affordable ways to get the lighting right during the holidays and throughout the year.
Meow!
Crafty Cut-outs These cosy little Strala LED lanterns at Ikea will add warmth and welcome to your table top or windowsill this winter and being white, they’ll work well throughout the year. Powered by LED batteries they are also good for the environment and long lasting. Also available in red and gold. Ikea | $6.99 for a set of three
WEST ELM
Meow!
Pattern Party The Decorator Printed Tin candles at West Elm should add some cheer to your party — reminiscent of the vintage (and much feared or sometimes adored) holiday sweater. West Elm | $18
This subtle little snow leopard candle will be a talking point at your party this winter and not being too distinctively Christmassy, will work on a windowsill throughout the year. Available at West Elm, as part of the range of Animal Doll stoneware candles that take their design inspiration from Russian dolls. It will look great on its own or with its forest friends. West Elm | $16 — $22
During the holidays we spend more time indoors, so it’s nice to make your home just right so you, your family and friends are happy to be there. Here are my five favourite ways to do just that. NO. 1: FLOOR-WARMING SYSTEM It can really warm the sole. This electric system goes beneath tiled floors and makes them warm to the touch. It’s especially great in basements and bathrooms. You can even regulate the temperature of the floor to your liking. My top choice is a system that combines floor-warming and uncoupling in a single layer; normally you need two separate systems. An uncoupling system for all tiled floors prevents cracks, so if your house shifts your tiles won’t. This can save a lot of money down the road. Frequent temperature changes — going from cold to warm and warm to cold — can cause more expansion and contraction, leading to more cracks in your tiles and grout. That’s why an uncoupling system is important for floor-warming. But don’t kid yourself. These types of floor-warming systems are meant only to heat your floors not the room (some in-floor radiant systems are designed to heat the whole room or house). Be sure you know what you’re buying and its capability. N O. 2 : A P R O P E R RANGE HOOD Whether your stove is gas or electric, it needs an extraction fan over it to get rid of excess moisture and kitchen fumes when you cook.
ALEX SCHULDTZ/The Holmes Group
Mike performs the tissue test, which involves placing a tissue to a fan when it’s on to make sure it’s strong enough to extract excess moisture and fumes; the fan should be strong enough to hold the tissue in place. It should extend over the surface of and be installed close enough to the stove to extract air — but not so close that you bump your head. Too many “designer” hoods are installed too high. And make sure the hood extracts the air to the outside — not into the attic. Pulling moisture into the attic can lead to mould. The fan needs to be the right size for your stove and house. If it’s too big or too strong it will waste heat, energy and money, and can lead to depressurization. When you extract too much air from your house the pressure inside becomes less than the pressure outside which can result in air being pulled back into the home (also known as backdrafting). This is dangerous because deadly combustion gases — for instance, from your fireplace, hot-water heater or furnace — can be drawn back into your home. N O. 3 : H E A LT H Y INDOOR AIR Change your air-filter regularly — once a month during winter is ideal. My top filter choice is one that can remove mould spores, bacteria and viruses. Also, talk to a HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) specialist about installing an air cleaner with a HEPA (high-efficiency par-
ticulate air) filter to remove contaminants. Also, choose paint, caulk and adhesive with low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) whenever possible, and hire a reputable ductcleaning company to clean furnace ducts every year. They should use a camera scope to check the ductwork. If you’re in the middle of a reno talk to your contractor about VOC-absorbing drywall — yes, it does exist. It costs more, but if you have the budget, invest in your health. NO. 4: SAFE CHIMNEYS Every working chimney’s flue must be inspected and cleaned every year — no exception. If the flue is blocked or cracked toxic fumes like carbon monoxide can enter your home. Even a hairline crack can open up as much as a centimetre once heated. NO. 5: SAFE STAIRS Absolutely no rugs at the top or bottom of stairs. This is a huge safety hazard. I don’t even like rugs that go down the centre. Why risk tripping or falling? Make sure stairs are sturdy, properly lit, well-maintained and have a securely attached handrail. Watch Mike Holmes on Holmes Makes It Right on HGTV. For more information visit makeitright.ca.

Today’s wreath might be a square, star or rectangle. Traditional holiday colours might cede ground to vibrant limes, deep indigo, pale pink or soft cream. Retailers are offering more modern choices than ever. Alternatively, let your inner elf loose and craft your own holiday creation. Crate & Barrel (crateandbarrel. com) has one made of rolled paper and twigs to create a swirl of texture that taps the rustic trend. At One King’s Lane (onekingslane.com), find a reindeer moss wreath in festive and chic chartreuse. If you’d like to try your hand at wreath design, crafts stores have wire, foam and wood bases. Heat up the glue gun and let your imagination go. You might find inspiration in designer Stephanie Hung, known for creative holiday craft ideas in Style at Home magazine. She’s found some unexpected uses for common household items this season. Red plastic spoons, striped paper straws, patterned clothespins and even white Styrofoam cups can be

An ornate ceiling medallion is given a coat of bright green paint. Clothespins are covered in washi tape and arranged in rows in a wreath frame. Instructions are in the magazine’s November issue.
