Bathroom king Dor nbracht is rolling out a line of WaterSense-certified faucets (for the bathroom and kitchen) in Europe, which will be released in North America early next year. Named Smart Water, these faucets utilize smart-home technology. A typical shower, says Pat Jarvis, VP of sales and marketing for Dornbracht, North America, takes around 15 seconds to a minute to heat up, but most people generally leave it running for lon-

The horizontal shower by Dornbracht means you get to shower while lying down. ger before getting in, which wastes a lot of water. “I have three kids,” Jarvis says. “And every time my kids turn on the shower, it’s like three minutes later and I’m like ‘OK, it’s hot, get in the shower, you’re wasting gallons of water.’ ” Dornbracht’s Smart Water line allows users to turn on their shower or bath with their iPhone or iPad.

“When it gets hot, your iPhone beeps and says your shower’s ready,” says Jarvis. The application also allows for different presets (temperature, pressure, etc.) for each member of the household. In the high-end market of bathroom design, Jarvis says, there has also been a movement away from the traditional.

The Utile shower wall solution by Maxx Bath uses polymer panels to give the look and feel of tile, without the maintenance. “Ten years ago, the highend market was 15 to 20 per cent contemporary,” says Jarvis. “ ... (now) it’s closed in at around 40 to 60 per cent contemporary. It’s actually swung to more contemporary than traditional.”

The jewelry industry, says Jarvis, can be credited for spurring the rose gold trend we’re seeing in bathrooms. Dornbracht’s Cyprum line features faucets, towel rings and tissue holders in a rose gold hue.

“Ours is actually 18-karat gold and copper,” says Jarvis. “It actually has real gold in it and makes for a nice finish, a nice look.”

You can get a Cali vibe going in lots of different directions. Think weathered woods, leathers, and boreal forest and coastal hues like indigo, dark green and stone. Southern California’s a mix of surf-culture casual and movie-studio glamour. Channel the sun and sand with beachy, “retro-modern” hues (deep aqua, coral, sand), and reclaimed materials. Midcentury modern furnishings in hot orange, white, turquoise and fireball red, add punch. “For me, quintessential California Style is laid-back, hip and happy. WorldSkills puts brightest tradespeople to the test MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

WorldSkills 2015 star ts Tuesday in Sao Paulo, Brazil. For anyone who doesn’t know what WorldSkills is, it’s basically the Olympics of skilled trades. It’s a competition where over a thousand young people — the best young professionals from across 72 countries and regions — compete in 45 skills and trades; that includes everything from bricklaying and web design, to jewelry making and cooking. Just like the Olympics, it happens every two years. (The last one was in Leipzig, Germany in 2013. I was there with my son MJ — Mike Jr.) It’s an opportunity for young people from different continents, and different backgrounds in knowledge and expertise, to go head-to-head to show their creativity, determination, endurance and talent. WorldSkills is the biggest skills competition in the world. And after going to these competitions year after year, and watching these kids pour everything they’ve got into their craft and their skill, leaving it all on the competition floor, I’ve learned one thing: That all the best pros have passion for their skill. But more importantly, they have the drive and determination to take that passion and use it to deliver real results — results that help peoples’ lives, make things

These are the people you want on the front lines when it comes to making our cars, building our homes, taking care of us at the hospital, building the machines we’ll use in the future to dream and build even better ways of making things work. These are the professionals that will be thinking up new solutions to old problems — like alternative fuels and energy; sustainable building; smart construc-

tion in response to different building environments. But they’re also the pros that will be dreaming up new and better ways of making our everyday lives better; from how we eat, sleep and move from point A to point B, to how we communicate with each other, and how we will create the world our kids will be living in, in the future. We need the best people doing these jobs because it’s a huge responsibility. Period. We need people with integrity, who value real work and determination, and who know how to deliver top results when it comes to their skilled work and professional training, to be at the forefront of skilled trades and technology, because these are the industries, and the people, that will literally be building and shaping the world in the future. So if a country or an industry wants to thrive in the global economy, you better believe they’re supporting their trades. And you see it at these competitions. Because for some countries, if you win gold at WorldSkills that means you’ re getting a house and a job at a top company — you basically have it made. Why? Because these countries know the true value of a skilled trade worker, and they’re getting the results they need by investing in them. We hired a professional spa consultant to create these water scenarios,” says Jarvis. When it comes to bathroom innovation, designing for small spaces is key, says André Deland, VP of new product development and marketing for Quebec-based Maax Bath Inc. The company has specialized in manufacturing baths and showers for the past 45 years and recently came out with ModulR, a modular shower and tub solution that provides around 3,000 shower, tub and shower-door configurations. “You can mould them together to offer a lot of flexibility in the floor plan,” says Deland. ... I think ModulR is a no-brainer.” Maax’s other latest product, Utile, addresses something we’re all short on — time. Their shower wall solution is solid panels that are easy to install and have the look of stone and tile. “You have the tile look, but you can do it in a day,” says Deland. “You don’t have the leaks and maintenance of grout lines.
