Shades of grey

Colour can lean toward warm or cool SHEILA BRADY FOR POSTMEDIA NEWS Is it pure coincidence or are there indeed similarities between Christian Grey, the hottie in 50 Shades of Grey, and the hot colour transforming our homes? T hey share the same name. Both are chameleons — neutral on the surface and twisted on closer inspection. The man and colour have many shades and the ability to change in a flash, depending on the mood or accessory. On the design side, grey is the reigning neutral, around for the past five years, gaining strength and showing no signs of slowing down, according to a raft of designers, colour experts, flooring folks and stone sales professionals. This champion of cha-

It’s all to say that grey the colour is not the least bit boring. It’s simply understated and very, very flexible. “I am happy to do 50 kitchens in 50 shades of grey,” says Ottawa interior designer Aviva Ben-Choreen. “The
first few kitchens we saw in grey were high-gloss lacquers. Now there are more wood grains and grey textured melamines.” She guesses that 80 per cent of kitchens have some grey in them and modern custom homes usually have bigger helpings. “It’s interesting, because people who tend to choose grey finishes have more modern tastes. They are edgier.”

Michael McElligott was not afraid to go with several shades of grey in his renovated kitchen at his west-end Ottawa home.
Grey Year of
cool, restrained colour schemes Continued from F1 Ben-Choreen remembers a successful marriage of grey in a recently finished kitchen, combining a soft grey quartz counter on a stronger grey-coloured base. The floor featured oversized tiles in a mid-grey tone, while she kept the upper cabinets a high-gloss white. “It was successful because there were tones on tones and we played with the textures.” For those who are more timid about introducing the hue, she adds, “Grey glass subway tiles for a backsplash is an easy entry.” Michael McElligott is obviously not timid when it comes to adopting shades of grey in his renovated kitchen, which has transformed his sturdy home built in the mid’60s in Ottawa’s west end. Almost two years ago, McElligott and his wife, Paulette, tore down walls, opening up the kitchen and dining room to the living room. “I like the colour,” he says. “There are warm greys and cold greys. I would bring home a tile and leave it against the wall or on the floor. We would walk by in the morning and at night. They changed.” McElligott’s Cambrian quartz
countertop has white with many veins in different shades of grey. And the floors and shaker-style cabinets are also in grey. Grey has spread through the house, from walls, to carpeting, hardwood, window coverings, slick couches and even to washers and dryers. Once the preserve of modern, big-city homes, grey is now equally comfortable in traditional and country homes. It has overtaken exterior stone cladding, not only on modern variations, but also traditional styles, says Steve Lacelle of Arriscraft International, a major supplier of man-made stone to the housing industry. Grey was around in the early ’90s, but then disappeared, he says, leaving just the earth tones — beiges, creams and browns. “People were thirsty for a change. Grey is now a big thing,” says Lacelle. The grey invasion is not by chance, says veteran designer Karen Brown. There are influential groups, including the Color Marketing Group and the older International Colour Authority, that gather twice a year to set popular colours two years in advance for the marketplace, from furnishing to fashions, tile makers

Which explains why, for the first time, Westboro recently received grey horizontal shades from leading Canadian manufacturer ShadeO-Matic. It used to be only white or a variation.
“We are also getting grey wool carpets by Dupont that are soft and stain resistant. Hardwood flooring is also veering away from the brown tones.” Now there are wide-planked, hand-scrapped woods in shades of grey. The popular Pantone Color Institute has declared 2015 a year
for cool, restrained colours, including a fortified red called Marsala, but right behind is Glacier Grey, an unobtrusive hue that allows other colours to shine. Individual paint companies also get into the game, including C2, which is in lockstep, backing Tin Man as its colour for 2015.

MAKE IT RIGHT
Try something new in the bedroom And because I know everyone’s thinking it …
Accent walls
MIKE HOLMES Make it Right
Valentine’s Day is a good excuse to start thinking about giving your bedroom an upgrade. Typically, when people renovate their kitchen or bathroom they’re overwhelmed by their options, which range from back splashes to tiles, sinks, showers, kitchen counters, fixtures, appliances and cabinets. But when it comes to the bedroom, most people draw a blank. They usually just stick to paint and flooring, maybe some crown moulding. Lately I’ve been seeing all kinds of different things you can do to a bedroom, like add an accent wall, custom lighting and automated features. Even my crew has been getting creative. But there’s a right and wrong way of doing creative design work in a home. So if you are looking to spice things up in the bedroom, be sure to do it right.
Lighting You can change lighting in your bedroom and make it warmer by switching to a lower wattage. You can also put your lights on a dimmer — LEDs too. There are also LED candles. Some of them are so lightweight you can hang them on the wall with just the sticky stuff you use to hang pictures. Stay away from recessed lighting if it means cutting into attic space; this can lead to major heat loss.
There are a lot of options when it comes to accent walls, including paint, textured and paintable wallpaper, stone, cork or even a “living wall” or green wall — a wall covered in plants and greenery. An accent wall can even be built out to add features such as a recessed television or fireplace. Some accent walls are more of a commitment than others, and what you think is a great feature might not be to a potential homebuyer. For example, paint colours can be changed easily. But adding a feature like a stone or living wall is more of a commitment because of the work and expense involved. Know your level of commitment before making a major change. And if you’re thinking of selling, keep it simple. Some homebuyers might not like plants all over their walls as much as you do. When installing different materials on a bedroom wall, like stone or cork, the rule always is to follow manufacturer’s instructions. Every product is different. Some interior stone can be installed with just an adhesive or glue. Sometimes the adhesive works only if you’re dealing with a painted wall (the glue might need to dissolve the paint for proper adhesion). If the wall is unpainted it might need to be primed. Other interior stone comes in panels that are screwed to the wall, ideally into the framing. If it’s attached to only drywall the panels can come loose — especially if they’re heavy — which puts more pressure on all the stone panels below it. Eventually, they can sepa-

Sometimes it’s tough (or impossible) to make sure every panel hits framing. One option is to remove the drywall, replace it with plywood and then install the stone panels over top. Yes, it will cost more but you will know for sure the stone has been secured properly.
Mirrors on the ceiling Don’t do it. That’s large, heavy glass over your head. If something happens and it comes loose, you’re in big trouble. Plus, if you have a popcorn ceiling — and most homes do — you’ll need to sand it down. It’s a lot of work. Some people might tell you installing a mirror on the ceiling can be done with just glue. I’d want something more secure, like a mirror with framing around it so you can screw it to the roof joists or rafters. But I’d rather be safe than sorry. Keep the mirrors on the wall, not your ceiling. Watch Mike Holmes on Holmes Makes It Right on HGTV. For more information visit makeitright.ca.
Following the manufacturer’s instructions on proper installation is key when adding an accent wall to a bedroom, regardless of the material. Sometimes adhesives will not do the job when installing heavy stone.

U.S. faces ‘megadrought,’ study finds Scientist says ‘much drier future’ ahead NICK ALLEN LONDON DAILY TELEGRAPH LOS ANGELES — A broad swath of the western United States is likely to be hit by a “megadrought” lasting decades in the second half of this century, according to a new study. Scientists from NASA and Cornell and Columbia universities, said there would be weather conditions unprec-
edented in the last millennium. Benjamin Cook, a climatologist at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies and lead author of the study, said: “Natural droughts like the 1930s Dust Bowl and the current drought in the (U.S.) southwest have historically lasted maybe a decade or a little less. “What these results are saying is we’re going to get a drought similar to those events, but it is probably going to last at least 30 to 35 years. Nearly every year is going to be dry toward the end of the 21st century compared with what we think of as normal conditions now.
shows there were decadeslong megadroughts in the region during the so-called medieval climate anomaly in the 12th and 13th centuries. But the latest study said the looming event would be worse. The impact would also be greater because of population growth, which would cause water shortages. research was presented at an annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and published in the journal Science Advances. California is already in the fourth year of an extended drought, with 40 per cent of the state classified as in “extreme drought.” But many scientists agree that is a naturally occurring event. Toby Ault, an assistant professor at Cornell University and the study’s coauthor, said: “We’re not necessarily locked into these levels of megadrought risk if we slow the effects of rising greenhouse gas on global temperatures.”

Fierce fighting surged Friday in eastern Ukraine as Russian-backed separatists mounted a major, sustained offensive to capture a strategic railway hub ahead of a weekend ceasefire deadline.
Separatists fight for land before ceasefire BALINT SZLANKO AND PETER LEONARD THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ARTEMIVSK, Ukraine — Russian-backed separatists mounted a vicious assault Friday in eastern Ukraine ahead of a weekend ceasefire deadline, pummeling a strategic railway hub with wave upon wave of shelling in a last-minute grab for territory. At least 26 people were killed across the region. The fiercest confrontations focused on the governmentheld town of Debaltseve, a key transport centre that has been on the receiving end of dozens of artillery and rocket salvos in the 24-hour period after the peace deal
was sealed Thursday by the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France. The deadline for the warring sides to halt hostilities is Sunday at one minute after midnight. Interfax-Ukraine news agency quoted Petro Mekhed, Ukraine’s deputy defence minister, as saying separatist forces had been tasked with hoisting their flags over Debaltseve, as well as the key port city of Mariupol, before the ceasefire takes hold. Military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said 11 soldiers have been killed and 40 wounded across eastern Ukraine since the agreement was reached in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. At least eight civilians also have died
in government-controlled territory, regional authorities loyal to Kyiv said, while the rebels said seven civilians were killed in artillery attacks on the separatist-held cities of Luhansk and Horlivka. In recent days, separatist fighters have nearly completely encircled Ukrainian forces in Debaltseve, where all but a few thousand civilians have fled the fighting. Ukraine says Debaltseve should remain in government control under the terms of a September peace deal. A copy of that pact leaked to Ukrainian media shows the town lying on the government’s side of the line of division agreed by the rebels and Ukrainian officials.
Elsewhere, by the Azov Sea in southeastern Ukraine, government troops said they had retaken a handful of villages. Troops there have denied reporters access to those operations, which aim to push rebel fighters back from the government-held port of Mariupol. The ceasefire is to be monitored by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s observer mission in Ukraine. OSCE secretary general Lamberto Zannier said in Kyiv he hoped hostilities would be halted by the deadline. “We would really hope to see a decrease already between now and that moment,” he said.
LONDON — Teetotalism has become a major force in British life for the first time since the temperance movement after a dramatic rise in the number of young people shunning alcohol. The number of under-25s opting for abstinence from drink has leaped by 40 per cent in eight years, meaning young people have overtaken the elderly as the most sober generation. Figures published by the Office for National Statistics show more than a quarter of young people do not drink alcohol at all. Binge drinking is also in decline. In London, the youngest and most ethnically diverse region of the U.K., one in three people is teetotal. Once closely associated with 19th-century nonconformist Christian groups such as Methodists and the Salvation Army, the rise in abstinence has coincided with the growth of Britain’s Muslim community. However, Islam probably accounts for only a small part of the phenomenon amid a wider
shift in attitudes. Studies have suggested the generation that came of age in the era of austerity and university tuition fees holds more conservative views on drinking, smoking, gambling and sex than their predecessors. Binge drinking, measured as the number of people who had a heavy drinking session in the week before the annual ONS General Household Survey, fell by almost 17 per cent across the wider population between 2005 and 2013. Among young people it dropped by a third. Only one in 50 men under 25 now drinks on an almost daily basis, compared with one in 10 a decade ago. While in 2005 elderly people were a third more likely than the young to abstain from alcohol, today the gap has disappeared altogether to 27 per cent of both age groups. Strikingly, the number of men aged between their mid-40s and mid-60s who have turned their backs on drink altogether has jumped by 38 per cent since 2005, but among women of the same age it fell by seven per cent.

AFRICA
Human tide flees horrors of Boko Haram to Chad DAVID BLAIR LONDON DAILY TELEGRAPH BAGA SOLA, Chad — Women and children, limp with exhaustion, were the first to disembark from the ancient wooden barge. Then came the men, splashing their way through shallow water. In the next few minutes, 86 tense and bewildered people stumbled ashore on the eastern edge of Lake Chad. They were following in the footsteps of 17,000 other Nigerian refugees who have already fled to Chad. Behind them, on the far side of the lake, lay the domain of Boko Haram. This bloodstained Islamist movement is advancing remorselessly, inflicting a human calamity on one of Africa’s most remote regions. Boko Haram now domi-
nates the Nigerian shore of this verdant oasis on the southern fringe of the Sahara, pillaging and burning entire towns at will. N i g e r i a ’s a r m y, o u t gunned and outfought, has lost control of thousands of square kilometres, abandoning the local people to their fate. Almost 180,000 civilians have responded by fleeing to neighbouring countries. Most have gone to Niger or Cameroon, but Boko Haram’s latest offensive has ravaged the western shore of Lake Chad. Those caught in the vortex have no way of escape except by making the arduous boat crossing. Shamsia Umaru, 13, stepped ashore clasping her baby sister, Fatima, and her four-year-old brother, Yahya. But Shamsia arrived without her father. “It was Boko Haram who killed him,” she

People stand on the banks of Lake Chad in the village of Ngouboua. Nigeria’s Boko Haram rebels carried out their first attack Friday inside neighbouring Chad, targeting a village on the shores of Lake Chad as part of a widening insurgency that has hit four countries. said simply. When Boko Haram capture a town, the fate of its people rests on whether or not they resist. Those who
put up a fight — as in Doron Baga — can expect nothing but pitiless massacre. Those who succumb are treated differently. The gun-
men generally assemble all the local people and announce their home has become part of the new Islamic caliphate they are
building across Africa. T hen the inhabitants are divided into different groups. Young men and boys are often taken away for indoctrination and training. Women and girls are likely to be enslaved and used as sexual playthings of Boko Haram fighters. Women may be abducted for use as domestic servants. Middleaged men, meanwhile, run the greatest risk of being summarily killed. But the fugitives are still coming. In the whole of 2014, only 3,000 Nigerian refugees entered Chad; so far this year, another 14,000 have made the journey. “We are planning for 30,000 people over the year,” said Irene del Rio, the head of the World Food Programme’s Mao Field Office. “To assist them would require another $10.4 million US.”
