The four C’s: Decor therapy for couples

example of how I take over everything). Although I can’t undo my actions, I can impart some wisdom to my clients so that their process is more balanced than ours was. I encourage couples to focus on the most important elements of decorating, not just style but also what I call the four C’s: cost, comfort, colour and compromise. I also asked for the advice of Gail Saltz, clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Saltz gives some smart, no-nonsense tips.

ELIZABETH MAYHEW THE WASHINGTON POST I admit it. I single-handedly took over the decorating of my family’s house. To most, this would seem natural because I work in the field and have always had a strong esthetic point of view. But what our friends and colleagues don’t realize is my husband also has interior design opinions — ones I bulldozed over. Although I am proud of how our house turned out, I am not proud of the fact that I pretended to, but in reality did not, involve him. My husband equates the decorating process to the time we selected our wedding registry — I dragged him along under the guise that his opinion mattered when I really just

almost all cases, I got my way, but not without consequences. Even today, years after the last room was fin-

The No. 1 thing couples fight about is money, so when it comes to decorating, the most important thing you can do is set a budget before you begin. Do your homework and make sure you factor in all extra costs such as moving and installation. I always suggest investing in the big pieces first for each room: sofa, dining table and bed.

Kitchen mantra: clean, separate, cook, chill Keeping on top of danger zones

ging blenders, flipping them over and unscrewing the blade assembly, then washing all the parts and drying them after every use. For food-storage containers, unattached gaskets should be removed, cleaned and dried after every use, Yakas said.

Katherine Roth The Associated Press Even the tidiest kitchens might be harbouring harmful bacteria, and often where they’re least expected. Paying more attention to a few often-overlooked places can help keep your household safer, experts say. For starters, home cooks should have four watchwords, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: clean, separate, cook and chill. Watch for cross-contamination, particularly with meats and vegetables; cook everything thoroughly; and keep both raw and cooked foods sufficiently cold when needed. T hen, cleaning a few often-overlooked areas in the kitchen could offer additional protection from E. coli, salmonella, listeria, yeast and mould, according to NSF International, a nonprofit organization in Ann Arbor, Mich., that has been promoting proper cleaning of kitchen tools and appliances since the 1940s.

3. Creepy fridge compartments:

Bacteria lurk around blender blades and gaskets. NSF Inter national has put out recommendations on kitchen hot spots based on studies done in 2011 and again in 2013:

1. Scary Sponges “You can either get away from sponges altogether and use dish cloths or rags, which can be sanitized, or, if you do use sponges, put a wet sponge in the microwave for two minutes to kill most of the harmful bacteria,” said Lisa Yakas, a microbiologist with NSF. Betsy Goldberg, home director for Real Simple magazine, said, “Many people mistakenly think that rinsing a sponge with water is enough, but sponges really need to be washed in the top rack of the dishwasher or wet and then microwaved for two minutes,” and “obviously, if

NSF International

To avoid cross-contamination, store vegetables in a separate drawer above the meat compartment to avoid raw juices dripping onto the produce. it smells or has loose pieces, it’s time to throw it away.”

2. Ghastly gaskets Dangerous beasties can lurk in the hard-to-reach areas under the thin, removable plastic gaskets found around the lids of some food storage containers, and also around blender gaskets and

blades, according to Yakas. “This one, people really find surprising. But think about how many times people make smoothies and just put the blender in the dishwasher or rinse it then use it again. In our studies, we found salmonella, E. coli, yeast and mould around blender blades and gaskets.” She recommends unplug-

“Meat and vegetable compartments are another place few people think about, but it’s where you are storing raw meat and vegetables that may still have some soil residue,” Yakas said. “Keep everything raw and cooked separately, and remove the compartments and wash them with warm soapy water about every two or four weeks, depending on your household needs.” Goldberg suggests removing them every so often and soaking in the sink in hot, soapy water for 15 minutes. “While they are soaking, you can douse the inside of the fridge with a disinfecting spray,” she said. “Wipe down the walls and then each shelf, and use a toothbrush spritzed with cleaner to get in the crevices. After 15 minutes, drain the water and sprinkle the compartments in baking soda, then wipe them clean with a wet sponge.”

4. Separate the spatulas and clean the can opener: Can openers should be washed in the dishwasher or at least hand-washed after every use, paying attention to removing any food residue on the blade, Yakas said. “And a lot of people are surprised to find that a lot of spatulas and scrapers are actually composed of two pieces that pull apart, and that the inside part can harbour salmonella, E.coli and yeast,” she said. “Just pull it apart, clean with soapy water, rinse and thoroughly dry.” Goldberg said.

5. Wash water dispensers and coffee reservoirs: “Our studies found yeast and mould in refrigerator water dispensers,” said Yakas. Most systems can be cleaned with a vinegar solution, she said. “Coffee machine reservoirs are also dark and damp and are great places for mould and mildew to grow,” she said. “It’s a good idea to pour about four cups of white vinegar in the reservoir and run the vinegar through the unit, followed by two to three wash cycles of water. This should really be done every 40 to 80 brew cycles, or at least monthly,” she said.

Therapy Communicate and give credit Continued from F1 Saltz suggests going one step further: discuss early on how you will handle either one of you wanting to make a budget change along the way.

Comfort

This is one of the trickiest elements of decorating because what is comfortable for a five-foot-two woman might not be comfortable for a sixfoot-four man. Go furniture shopping together. Know the purpose of each room and furnish it accordingly. Saltz suggests that couples should decorate in 10-year increments for actual family living. In her experience, many fights occur when couples decorate for an ideal and not for kids, messiness and ease of care; this not only creates tension but also decreases the opportunity for fun family experiences and memories that build intimacy.

From a decorating standpoint, comfort and fabric go hand in hand; you will never be fully relaxed if you are terrified of staining what you’re sitting on. To determine the right fabric choices, think about look, feel and, most important, durability (check out solution-dyed outdoor fabrics for all upholstery). And when it comes to sofas, consider extra-deep seats, down or down-covered foam cushions and ample pillows or throw cushions (these are so that short people like me will be comfortable in those extra-deep seats).

Colour

Painting your walls is without a doubt the single most transformative tool in all of interior design and one of the most flexible. Its impact is immediate, changing the mood of a room and your perception of its size. Although painting a room is easy, choosing a colour can be a challenge.

Numerous times I have sat with couples as they labour over tiny paint chips. Clarity comes when I tell them that the simplest way to judge a colour is to try it out, at which point they roll up their sleeves and get to work. Painting is fun and working together will make you both feel good. Saltz says it is important to give each other credit. “Pride in your home, like pride in your family, is something that can increase your closeness because it reflects both your tastes.”

Compromise

When it comes to decorating, I have worked with couples who have clearly delineated responsibilities: he deals with everything outside, she deals with everything inside. But for most people, it’s not that easy. One client of mine said, “all men want a La-Z-Boy recliner and

all women don’t.” Though the truth might not be so black and white, the challenge still is finding a way to balance style desires with comfort and financial desires so that, as Saltz says, “you avoid later resentments.” I wish I had had that advice. Saltz recommends that couples make communication a priority with weekly check-ins during which they take each other’s temperature on their decisions, budget and any changes that might have arisen.

when they’re told the simplest way to judge a colour is to try it out, at which point they roll up their sleeves and get to work.

Style

Perhaps the trickiest for couples to navigate because it is so personal. You can’t argue with someone if he or she thinks a sofa isn’t comfortable, but you can argue if that person doesn’t like a sofa because of its chunky leg and mod-

MAKE IT RIGHT

Fixing frozen pipes should never be DIY project OTTAWA CITIZEN

Kitchen renovations garner the biggest return on your investment, but you don’t have to blow the bank.

Biggest bangs for your reno buck KAREN TURNER OTTAWA CITIZEN If your home is outdated or in dire need of repair, renovation may be necessary to get it ready to sell. But which home imp r o v e ments will fetch the most money? Scott M c G i l livray, host of HGTV’s Scott In c o me McGillivray P r o p e r t y, g iv e s h i s top-five recommendations.

1. Income suites “There’s no renovation you can do to your home that will increase its value as (much as) adding an income suite,” says the contractor and real estate investor, who has been buying and renovating income properties for the past 15 years.

2. Kitchens Kitchens give the biggest return on investment far beyond any other room in the house, McGillivray says, adding it is possible to do a kitchen remodel without blowing the bank. “There’s almost never a need to in-

vest in custom cabinets,” he says. Stone is still the preferred choice for counters, he admits, but there are more affordable options, including butcher block, composite and high-end laminates.

3. Bathrooms A spa-like space with a soothing colour palette, clean lines and high-end finishes defines most people’s ideal bathroom. “You may be hearing ‘cha-ching,’ but keep in mind that bathrooms are small and therefore require less material,” says McGillivray, who recommends investing in a “standout tile or funky sink or faucet to set the tone of the space — a little goes a long way.”

4. Hardware and fixtures Doorknobs, light fixtures, toilets, drawer handles and faucets are inexpensive, but make a space feel fresh and modern. Small investment for a big impact, he says.

5. Flooring From engineered hardwood to more affordable laminates, a flooring update always brings new life to an area and instantly gives the impression of a renovated and redecorated space.

MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

One of the worst things that can happen to your home during winter is a burst pipe. Repairing or replacing the pipe is one thing, but the real — and more costly — threat is the potential for water damage. What causes a pipe to burst? Pressure, and usually that pressure is caused by the expansion of water when it freezes. (A clog can also cause a pipe to burst but freezing is the usual culprit.) It’s important to prevent frozen pipes by wrapping them (including hot water lines) and draining exterior plumbing lines. Also, turning off the exterior hose bib is not the same as shutting off the line; it must be shut off from the inside. But what if a pipe is already frozen? In some cases it’s unavoidable (for instance, during extreme weather conditions and power outages.) How would you know and what do you do? The first sign of frozen pipes is no water flow from one faucet or fixture (like a shower head), but others in the house work fine. If one pipe freezes other pipes nearby can freeze too, since they are in the same area of the house. So you should let a little bit of water drip from adjacent fixtures to keep water flowing before it freezes, and flush

ALEX SCHULDTZ/The Holmes Group

A licensed, experienced plumber should know which pipes are frozen and where they are without turning your walls into Swiss cheese. toilets every so often. You can do this when it’s extremely cold and/or there’s no power. When people think of a pipe bursting they usually imagine water pouring down the walls, through the ceiling or onto the floor. But if a pipe bursts because water froze in it, the homeowner might not know it until the frozen section thaws. Then one day they come home and their house

is flooded. If you suspect a burst pipe, shut off the main water valve as a precaution. It’s usually in the mechanical room in the basement, but every home is different. Next, call a licensed plumber. By code, all plumbing should be on the war m side of the insulation and vapour barrier. If not it should be rerun — a big, expensive job. A temporary

solution is a heat tracer or heat-tracing system. But you will still eventually need to rerun the pipe, or it will freeze again once there’s intense cold. Sometimes plumbers use a heat tracer or heat-tracing system to get rid of ice blockages in pipes. It has two clamps that are attached to either end of the pipe and then an electrical current thaws the ice. There are also plug-in versions you can get at big-box stores to wrap around pipes vulnerable to freezing. They typically have a thermostat, so when temperatures drop they kick in. Fixing frozen pipes is never a DIY job. You must call in a licensed, experienced plumber. They will know which pipes are affected and where they are without turning your walls into Swiss cheese. If you don’t have a licensed plumber you can trust in your list of contacts, one way to know if you’re dealing with a professional is by calling. Most reputable plumbing businesses have a dispatcher. They will tell you if there are any plumbers in your area and the wait time. If you call and you get someone’s voice mail, or the plumber picks up the phone him or herself, chances are they’ve picked up 20 other calls that day and you will be waiting a very long time before anyone shows up. You’re better off finding someone else. Watch Mike Holmes on Holmes Makes It Right on HGTV. For more information visit makeitright.ca.

DESIGN

Yellow enjoying comeback, but all colour is personal SAMANTHA PYNN FOR NATIONAL POST

Q

I’m majorly into design. I’ve even taken some design courses. I saw quite a bit of yellow at the Interior Design Show. Is it making a comeback? I’ve always wanted to paint rooms yellow, but I haven’t seen many designers use this hue. I’ve noticed that you don’t ever paint your rooms yellow. Just wondering if there is a reason for this? Is there a reason to use it just in smaller applications? A Yellow is definitely making a comeback in everything from kitchen cabinets to rugs, pillows, throws and accessories. And, I have to admit that all the great patterns and textures on the market are making me crave the sunny shade. If you’re looking for inspiration from designer greats who paint rooms in bold yellow, try Kelly Wearstler and Jamie Drake.

Every colour has its pros and cons according to colour theory. On one hand, yellow is a cheerful and war ming colour, but it’s also thought to be one that can cause people to lose their temper. Interestingly, yellow is the colour of many fast food restaurants (where the goal is to get you to super-size), but there are plenty of red, brown and orange fast food joints, too. My reason for not painting rooms yellow is personal. In a nutshell, I grew up with a yellow bedroom. I always wanted to change it, but my mother wouldn’t let me. And that’s the thing about colour. It’s personal. All the reasons and theories can’t influence your colour history and shouldn’t influence your preference for certain colours. If you love a colour, go ahead and paint your walls. Just be sure you’re picking a colour you can live with for a while because painting a room twice isn’t a fun way to spend a weekend.

For added inspiration I’ve included a bright and cheery room photo from HomeSense (homesense.ca). The key to working with yellow or any saturated colour is to repeat the main colour you’re working with and create harmony by adding analogous colours. You’ll notice in the HomeSense photo there’s a repetition of yellow in the rug (photorealistic 5-by-8-foot outdoor rug, $199.99) and cushion (embroidered floral cushion, $34.99) while the harmony is created by the ceramic garden stool ($59.99) in gold, an analogous colour, and coral lamps (gourd lamps $99.99). If you want a softer look, you could easily add ivory and sand tones to the room. To celebrate your love of lemony shades, I’ve done a little yellow shopping for you. I did sneak in some pink with a fabulous rug by Kate Spade for West Elm. Happy yellow decorating! Send your decor question to asksampynn@gmail.com.

DEVELOPMENTS

Micro units are often big on amenities ANDREA NEBLETT POSTMEDIA NEWS Not so long ago “cosy” was a polite way of describing someone’s tiny (and perhaps a little claustrophobic) living space. When it comes to micro units, cosy is exactly what it means — warm, homey and welcoming. These small units are now increasingly sought after, with builders brainstorming ways to make them more functional and inviting. Think higher

ceilings, larger windows, retractable countertops and combo appliances. Shedding some light on the growing appeal of micro units and a sea change in apartment living is the 2014 Macro View on Micro Units report compiled by the U.S. non-profit Urban Land Institute. It’s based on analysis by MPF Research — which publishes apartment market reports — on 400 rental communities built in 2012 to 2013 in 35 U.S. metropolitan areas. U.S. trends can have ripple

effects north of the border. These insights from ULI’s report still likely mirror some of the real estate realities here: ■ Micro units are usually about 350 square feet, but can range from 250 to 500 square feet. Sleeping and living space are combined, with separate full bathrooms and kitchens. ■ Micro unit communities are big on amenities, with many including communal spaces to “encourage socializing and foster a sense of community.”
