What’s hot in housing for 2015? POSTMEDIA NEWS

outh American-influenced sofa throws and Eurostyled kitchens. Greens and blues and whites vying to be the uber-popular colour of the year. Bigger laundry rooms and less condo construction. Housing trends are, as always, an unwieldy beast. Even so, Patrick Langston sneaks a peek at what’s hot and what’s not for 2015.

HOUSE DESIGN

Watch for everything from more dramatic entranceways to better storage space, according to Nick Lehnert of the Irvine, Calif.-based architecture and planning firm KTGY. He listed these and others in a September 2014 article on Builder.com. “If your homes don’t have at least half these items, you’re missing the market,” he says — and that, he confirms, includes the Canadian market. Not all builders are convinced Lehnert is right on every count, especially when it comes to his prediction that homes will continue to get smaller. Smaller homes are typi-

Trends Greens, blues, metals and wood Continued from F1 There should be growing demand for multigenerational homes, says Lehnert, as buyers look for ways to share purchase costs and keep extended families together. The online real estate information service Zillow predicts that living rooms, in decline since the advent of the openconcept kitchen — great room, will continue to disappear while bigger laundry rooms and ceiling fans (they can help reduce heating and cooling costs) will be ever more popular. Zillow also sees more new homes with grab bars and ground-floor master bedrooms to meet the needs of an aging population.

Colour

We hope you haven’t invested your life savings in marsala. The reddishbrown hue is the colour of the year for 2015, according to industry leader Pantone Color Institute, but the choice has been derided on several fronts. The Atlantic, for example, termed it “gaginducing.” Not to worry, though, because Benjamin Moore gave the nod to Guilford Green as the big colour for the new year while CIL went with Ocean Blue. Paint manufacturers have also said that, on one hand, softer, warmer shades are on the upswing as an antidote to our frenetic lives, but on the other hand, we’re now good with bright, bold colours because we see them everywhere. Maybe homeowners should shun fashion and just go with what they like.

Kitchens and Bathrooms

Watch for a continued shift away from bulkheads and ceiling-high cabinetry in kitchens and more emphasis on open, Euro styling, including a complete absence of uppers, according to design-

Zillow expects to see more bathrooms with grab bars and groundfloor master bedrooms to accommodate an aging population. er Aviva Ben-Choreen. Also on the must-have list: two-tone cabinetry with extreme contrasts like a deep walnut base and high-gloss white uppers. “People are seeing it in magazines and on TV,” says Ben-Choreen. Designer Nathan Kyle says m e t a l d o o r s o n pantries and cabinetry are trending, and that blending wood with the metal lends a timeless, international look. He also sees free-standing, furniture-like pantries gaining popularity and the ubiquitous trio of pendants over islands being shouldered aside by one or two large decorative fixtures. Bathrooms continue to be oases of calm luxury with even more of a shift to clean, contemporary lines and free-standing or corner soaker bathtubs. Trend watchers say sinks with legs instead of cabinets underneath are becoming a la mode. And grey continues to soar as the favourite colour in bathrooms, according to the National Kitchen and Bath Association.

Metal Lux

Metal doors on pantries and cabinetry are trending, says Nathan Kyle of Astro Design Centre. Blending wood with the metal lends a timeless, international look. house” (crisp white walls, stoneware crockery, hits of black and moder n fur nishings) and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, “South American fusion” (Latin textiles, bright pops of colour, worn leather). There are multiple reasons for these trends, says Dimma. The farmhouse look, for instance, “keeps coming back. This time it’s being driven by architectural trends … and Aline homes on Pinterest. Interiors follow along to a simple look. Last year, we saw lots of the Scandinavian look; this year, it’s blacks and whites and rustic. There are a number of companies doing faux beams.” When considering adopting a trend, Dimma suggests you look at what you already have and then be discerning with

Watch for contrasting trends, like mixing modern and rustic, says Canadian House & Home editor-in-chief Suzanne Dimma.

Sticky business for style maven Martha Stewart ANDREA NEBLETT POSTMEDIA NEWS For so many of us, wall decals summon up words like cheesy, corny and passé. But when Martha Stewart puts her mark on this decor doodah — needless to say, with her signature panache — it’s hard to ignore. And, whatever you do, don’t call them stickers. The all-things-home maven has launched an eponymous line of wall art decals for Fathead, a Detroit-based company known for its small- and large-space wall graphics made from materials ranging from vinyl to aluminum and acrylic. It includes more than 50 individual designs in 400-plus variations, available in an array of colours, styles and sizes.

Whether your esthetic runs to nature, inspirational messages, architectural accents or decorative graphics, there’s something for you in this peel-and-stick collection. Not limited to walls, they can give a lift to a weary wardrobe, dowdy doors or styleless stair risers. “Decorative wall decals have become such a fun, interesting option for decorating your home and I love how creative you can be with them,” Stewart, the founder and chief creative officer of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, said in a media release. A quick view of the collection on Fathead.com reveals decals ranging from $39.99 to $119.99 US (for a limited time, you can get up to 40 per cent off with the promo code “Upto40”).

MSLO/Fathead

Hanging Wisteria from the Martha Stewart Wall Art Decals collection lends style to the peel and stick trend.

Tint talk from design hobbyists POSTMEDIA NEWS

THE HOLMES GROUP

It’s not uncommon for homeowners to be pressured to make a decision they know isn’t right. We see this all the time — after floods, a major winter storm, termite problems, plumbing issues and so on. But the end goal must be to get the job done right.

Trust your instincts MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

Some of the best tools every homeowner has are their instincts. How many times have you been in a situation where a voice tells you, “This isn’t right. Do not do this.” That voice becomes very important as you move forward with home renovations and repairs. There are basic things I always tell homeowners about renos, such as slow down, educate yourself, get a maintenance inspection or hire a qualified pro to examine your home before making any major decisions. But heeding your instincts deserves more attention. Here’s a scenario. A homeowner had a major fire in her home. Her insurance company sent three contractors to assess the damage and give quotes. The insurance company chooses the cheapest contractor, but the insurers needed the homeowner to sign off on the contract for the work to start. The homeowner refused to sign. Why? Because when the contractor started telling her how he was going to

fix her home, she knew right away this wasn’t the right contractor. For example, he said he was going to clean the smoke damage and paint over it. He wasn’t going to replace water-damaged materials, fix the electrical or rebuild sections of her house that clearly needed it. It was going to be a patch job, which causes more problems than it solves. The insurance company kept telling the homeowner she had to sign the contract if she wanted her home fixed. But her gut kept telling her not to sign. She knew if she signed the contract with that contractor, her home wouldn’t get the repairs it needed to be safe and structurally sound and she would have no one to blame but herself. It’s customary to get multiple quotes. And homeowners can even submit quotes to their insurance company from licensed contractors they find themselves. The insurance company will decide how much of the costs they will cover, but homeowners have a part to play. It might take some extra negotiating with your insurance company, and you might even have to take on some of the costs yourself — but it’s worth it if it means getting the job done right. Every single job I’ve been called in to “rescue” has a

similar story. The homeowner at some point realizes things aren’t going the way they should. The contractor doesn’t show up on time, hesitates to give proper references, doesn’t explain the job in detail, the work doesn’t look right, and so on., the job site seems unsafe or there are several delays. And it’s always someone else’s fault. The homeowner is usually under pressure or believes the job has gone too far, so they go against their instincts — and pay for it. What they should do is pull the plug on the job immediately and find someone else. It’s not uncommon for homeowners to be pressured to make a decision they know isn’t right. We see this all the time — after floods, a major winter storm, termite problems, plumbing issues and so on. We believe we need to solve the problem right away. The end goal must be to get the job done right. If not, you’re wasting money and making a bad situation worse. If what a contractor tells you doesn’t make sense, cut your losses and move on. Otherwise, your losses are only going to get bigger.

To mark a century of helping spiff up homes, Para Paints has signed up five design-happy lifestyle bloggers for 2015. Their personal paint stories (maybe they’ll be called “parables?”) will appear on Para.com and on the company’s social media channels. The winners of the Para Blog Crew video competition are: Erin Trafford-Basquill and Dan Basquill of Nova Scotia, a young couple fixing up a seaside house. Heather Travis, of Erin, Ont., “known to Dumpster-

Interior designer Sarah Walker of Oakville, Ont., is one of five winners of the Para Blog Crew video competition. dive in heels,” will talk about her century home in the country. Nadia Duriavig of Mississauga, an avid DIYer, travels, takes photos and develops recipes.

S a r a h Wa l k e r f r o m Oakville, Ont., is a luxury interior designer, and Gemma Bonham-Carter of Ottawa is a crafter and mother whose bungalow is being renovated into a three-storey house.

Policemen patrol the Jewish quarter in Antwerp, Friday. Belgian authorities have charged five people with ‘participating in the activities of a terrorist group.’

Europe moves to thwart extremists RAF CASERT AND ANGELA CHARLTON THE ASSOCIATED PRESS B RU S S E L S — B e l g i u m ordered its army into the streets and anti-terrorism raids across Western Europe netted dozens of suspects Friday as Europe rushed to thwart more attacks by people with links to extremists in the Middle East. As anxiety soared following last week’s bloody spree in and around Paris, the broad scope of the police actions illustrated the challenges facing a continent threatened by militancy far from the battlefields of Syria, Iraq and Yemen. Rob Wainwright, head of the police agency Europol, said foiling such attacks by returning jihadists had become “extremely difficult” because Europe’s estimated 2,500 to 5,000 radicalized extremists have little command structure and are increasingly sophisticated. French, German, Belgian and Irish police had at least 30 suspects behind bars on Friday and, in Brussels, authorities said a dozen searches led to the seizure of four Kalashnikov assault rifles, hand guns and explosives. Several police

uniforms were also found, which Belgian authorities said suggested the plotters had intended to masquerade as police officers. The seizures followed a vast anti-terrorism sweep on Thursday in and around Brussels and the eastern industrial city of Verviers in which two suspects were killed in a firefight and a third wounded as police closed in on their hideout. Authorities said the overnight operation netted several returnees from war in Syria. Federal magistrate Eric Van der Sypt said Friday the suspects were within hours of implementing a plan to kill police. He said authorities were reasonably confident they had dismantled the core of a dangerous terrorist cell but more suspects could be at large. “I cannot confirm that we arrested everyone in this group,” he said. Authorities have said there was no apparent link between the foiled plots in Belgium and last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris on a satirical newspaper and a kosher supermarket. However, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Friday “the link that exists is the will to attack our values.”

WASHINGTON — It was a moment frozen in time — a Model 1873 Winchester repeating rifle propped up against the trunk of a juniper tree exactly where its owner had left it more than 100 years ago. Eva Jensen, an archeologist scouring the hillsides of Nevada’s arid Snake Mountains for American Indian artifacts, let out an involuntary cry of surprise when she stumbled across the find. “I recognized it instantly, but it takes your brain a little while to catch up,” she said. “I let out an exclamation and the rest of my staff thought I must have fallen off a cliff or something, because I just couldn’t say anything else after that.” The find was pure chance, the rusted barrel of the rifle catching the late afternoon sun. Otherwise it was almost perfectly camouflaged — the wooden stock that had once been a rich, burnished walnut was bleached grey and rendered indistinguishable from the juniper wood. From the first moment of the rifle’s discovery in November, Jensen and her staff at the Great Basin National Park have been speculating about how it came to be abandoned in the hills. To add to the sense of serendipity, Jensen and her team were sweeping the hills 450 kilometres north of Las Vegas to check for artifacts before a controlled vegetation burn. If they had missed the rifle, it would almost certainly have been destroyed by the fire. Very carefully, using tape to hold the crumbling stock together, park officials removed the gun from where it had been placed all those years ago, its butt nestled between two rocks. It was not loaded. Most likely, Jensen said, it belonged to one of the many mining prospectors who, from 1869, filed claims in the high desert mountains

GREAT BASIN NATIONAL PARK

A Model 1873 Winchester rifle is propped up against a tree in Nevada, likely exactly where its owner left it more than 100 years ago. An archeology team stumbled across the rifle last November while sweeping the area for artifacts ahead of a controlled vegetation burn. for silver, copper and tungsten, littering the area with mines, none of which were profitable. Some basic detective work revealed that the gun was one of more than 700,000 examples produced by Winchester’s factory between 1873 and 1916. The Model 1873 was so popular that it became known as the “weapon that won the West.” Experts said the gun, which originally sold for $50, the equivalent of more than

$1,000 today, would have no more than curiosity value to collectors who pay up to $15,000 for mint-condition examples. A unique serial number that Winchester stamped on all its rifles enabled researchers to establish that the weapon had been manufactured and shipped in 1882. In that year alone more than 25,000 left Winchester’s Connecticut factory, as the Model 1873, with its distinctive action capable of firing

15 shots without reloading, quickly became the “Everyman” rifle of the settling of the West. But there the trail went cold. There is one last hope, when staff show off the piece at a local inn hosting the annual Old Sheepherders Gathering Saturday. “Just maybe somebody, somewhere has a family history that tells how ‘grandpa lost his rifle up in the mountains there,’ ” said Jensen. “Perhaps we’ll find out, you just never know.”
