Shed owners swap spiders for chic Storage spaces reimagined CHRIS LACKNER OTTAWA CITIZEN It’s that instant when you decide it’s time for your own backyard hideaway — when you buy into the fact that sheds aren’t just for storing junk and hosting cobwebs anymore. Backyard sheds are being reimagined as elaborate outdoor living spaces. The trend has laid a foundation in Canada just as it explodes south of the border. Just last month, U.S. cable network FYI ordered production on a new series called He Shed, She Shed. Is any poor, simple storage shed truly safe? Move over lawn mower. Find a new space to squat, rusted paint cans. Sheds are getting a highend upgrade, transformed into areas for entertaining, lounging, studios, hobby workshops and home offices. “People don’t think of using a shed for some purpose other than storage … a lot of people think, gross, spiders and bugs or whatever else,” says Ottawa de-
JEAN LEVAC/ C Ottawa Citizen C/
Designer Kristi Blok, left, has created a ‘she shed’ out of a backyard garden shed for her sister, LLynsey Bennett. signer Kristi Blok of Kiki Interiors. “(But) the possibilities are endless … and what you’re seeing with the whole shed trend is people are keeping that rustic, outdoorsy look.” Ottawa’s Lynsey Bennett is a case in point. Since buying her home in the city’s Little Italy area about four years ago, she’s slowly trans-
formed her backyard into the perfect outdoor garden, relaxation and entertainment space. At its centre, a 14x20-foot shed. Blok is Bennett’s sister and they put their heads together to rethink the property’s storage shed. The result is a countrified, laid-back, livable space ideal for Bennett to lounge and read with
her cocker spaniel, Maddy — one of the shed’s biggest fans — or to entertain company, whether sizable or intimate. Bennett’s shed features a wooden bar with three stools, a fridge, couches and chairs — and some rustic chests and tiny antiques thrown in for good measure.
The barnyard wood floor has been whitewashed and reclaimed to provide texture to the front and back walls. And two patio doors were added that open up to her colourful garden and loungers — the ideal spot for sunbathing. Of course, Bennett’s shady retreat and a cold beverage are only steps away.
“It’s another extension of my home,” Bennett says. “When I do entertain, I don’t have to have everyone in my house. I have the deck or people can hang out in here … It adds another dimension. “It surprises people when they come here because I’m living in the middle of Little Italy but I have all this square footage.” In fact, Bennett just hosted her annual Italian week party and the she shed served as an outdoor bar and lounge area for her 30 or so guests. It was important for the sisters that the shed wasn’t an afterthought. The beige and black colours were chosen to match the exterior of Bennett’s home. “We wanted it to feel like it was part of the house, intentional, and part of the whole design,” Blok explains, adding the space could easily double as a home office or a place for crafting and hobby art — from sewing to carving and painting. While existing sheds can be renovated, some people prefer to build from scratch or have a structure custom made. David Dunn certainly gets a lot of use out of his shedturned-art-gallery, which he bought from North Country Sheds in Merrickville, Ont.

Outdoor Upgrading from shed to retreat CONTINUED FROM D1 A gardener and painter, Dunn wanted a place to show and sell his paintings of wildlife and woodlands. “We spend a lot of time in (the shed) eating cookies and drinking coffee, and sometimes drinking wine, and looking at the paintings.” The key selling point? “The double doors at the back that open into the garden so you are sort of drawn through the shed into the garden.” Dunn says visitors are often inspired by the 20x14-foot gallery, citing his structure as a great option for their own potential outdoor workshop or mini cottage retreat. He and she sheds have another key selling point: They’re costeffective. “It’s really affordable without a mass renovation and it’s so practical and useful,” Blok says. Jason Fisher, owner of Urbanshed in Calgary, agrees. “It’s an economical way to add square footage to your home,” Fisher explains, noting building an addition on a house would likely cost four to five times the price of a customized shed. His company both delivers and builds on-site, offering customized, four-season sheds with options for insulation, heating and air conditioning. Urbanshed.ca ships to Western Canada and its galleries offer multiple designs and shed concepts — from a yoga or music stu-

dio to a craft room or meditation space. Meanwhile, early shed converts like Bennett continue to benefit from their outdoor living space. “Some friends ask, ‘Can I live in this shed … do you rent this space out?’” she says. They’re half-kidding, but maybe that’s the next step in the evolution of sheds.

MAKE IT RIGHT
What’s in a quote? MIKE HOLMES Make it Right
I’ve been doing a lot of interviews lately for my new show and still to this day, af after doing television for over 11 years, the No. 1 question I get asked is how do you hire the right contractor? Typically people think it’s an easy process. You call up a contractor, have them come take a look at your house, they give you a quote, and if it’s within budget the job can start as soon as tomorrow. That’s a recipe for disaster. If a contractor can start a job the next day, that’s a big red flag, because if they’re not busy, it’s for a reason. And do you really want someone who only needs a couple of days to plan your entire renovation, or someone who won’t plan it out before doing the work? It took me two
years just to plan my garage. Finding the right contractor is the biggest and most important step of the renovation — in fact, it’s like going through the entire renovation with a contractor before a single nail is hammered. And it starts with getting a quote, which is dif different from an estimate. A quote is a basic breakdown of a job, printed on a sheet of paper, that includes general estimates on things like demolition, framing, drywall, painting, carpentry, flooring, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, just to name a few. Some contractors will give you a quote for free, but most pros will charge you for this. Why? Because good contractors are very, very busy. They don’t have a lot of time to look at a job and work on a proper quote because that’s time they’re taking away from other jobs. So they will only do that if homeowners are serious about the renovation and doing it right. The quote is supposed to give you a general idea of what a proper job will cost.
It’s meant to help weed out the good guys from the bad guys, so if three out of five contractors say a job will cost around $50,000, and the rest charge half that, there’s a good chance the ones charging more know more. A good contractor might charge $60,000 more, but they won’t cost you $220,000 in re pairs, ripping out brand new materials and then fixing everything — not to mention all the extra time and stress. I’ve seen it happen over and over again, where homeowners will hire the cheapest contractor, and then end up paying triple because the first guy they hired didn’t know what they were doing. That’s why they were cheap, and cheap always costs more. Does a quote give you enough information for you to make a smart decision on your contractor? Not for me. I’d want to see a detailed estimate (plus a contract with a payment schedule) before hiring anyone, and that will cost you, too. A detailed estimate is a big document, pages and pages
ALEX SCHULDTZ/The T Holmes Group The
Homeowners planning to renovate should get both a quote and a detailed estimate from contractors they are considering hiring. long. It lists every item going into the renovation, from specific materials, brand names and fixtures to asbestos tests, duct cleaning, and permits. (The last one my guys did had 150 items in it.) It takes weeks to put together, which is why most contractors will charge for it. The detailed estimate lets you compare apples to apples. It shows you exactly why one contractor might
charge $90,000 when someone else is charging $75,000 — it might be the brands they’re using, or materials, like coated lumber. I know what you’re thinking — paying for a quote and then paying for an estimate is a lot of money. But the truth is you get what you pay for, and a couple hundred bucks that could potentially save you hundreds of thousands is worth it in my books.
Renovations are a massive investment, and if you don’t know what you’re getting into — and I mean knowing every single detail about what’s going to happen, why, how, and when — a renovation can go down the tubes very quickly. Watch Mike in his new series, Home Free, airing Wednesdays on HGTV. For more information, visit makeitright.ca.

Swap tub for shower with roller door

I’m having the bathroom renovated, gutting it right back to the studs. No patch jobs, since the people who owned the house before us put in a tub cover (I suspect to hide the worn enamel). No one ever uses the tub because the darn cover creaks every time you move. Now the plan is to remove the tub altogether and install a shower with a glass door. I’m looking for something clean and simple. You used a fantastic-looking door on your show that had a really clean look. Can you give some more details and a cost estimate?

A bathroom reno is a big project, so it’s wise to research what you want so that you get your reno right the first time. There are plenty of custom glass styles on the market. Though glass doors with hinges are still popular, these days it’s all about the roller door. T h e d o o r yo u s aw o n HGTV’s Open House Overhaul is a frameless roller door from doorsandmore.ca. The starting price for this is $1,600. The door looks so sleek because there are no rails, tracks or channels to hold it in place, only a bit of silicone on the wall between the glass and the tile to keep the spray in the shower. People are loving the roller door for many reasons. The simplicity of the door fits into

ELAD WINKLER
While well-suited to a modern bathroom, the shower’s roller doors are so simple they will blend into any style of decor. any decorating scheme from über-mod to classic or country. Beyond esthetics, a roller door is great for small spaces because it slides back and forth, eliminating the need to have space for a door to swing open. Plus, roller doors can be cut to any size, which makes them great for bathrooms in small condos or in basements where the ceilings are low. And, because the door doesn’t extend to the ceiling, the open space allows for ventilation so there’s no mildew where the
glass meets the ceiling. Installing a roller door is not an easy job, though. Because frameless roller doors have only a band of silicone between the tile and the glass, the doors are measured to fit within 1/16th of an inch. Moreover, no bathroom wall is perfectly level, so the glass often has to be cut on an angle (of course this is not noticeable when you’re looking at the door). The job is so precise that the space is measured on site after the tile has been installed. “Once the tempered glass

has been cut,” Frank Gartner of Doors and More says, “it can’t be altered, not even by 1/16th of an inch.” If a mistake is made, the glass is unusable. In other words, this is not a DIY job. Last, unlike the slidingglass shower door on tracks from my suburban childhood — which always got stuck (even when someone was in the shower) and sounded louder than our 250-pound wooden garage door — the easy-glide system of the glass roller door is whisper quiet.

design
The black den is made for TV-watching, which is banned from the living room.
Light and day Virginie Martocq banishes darkness in major home reno Iris Benaroia National Post Trim, in jeans and a breezy eyelet-patterned shirt, Virginie Martocq doesn’t look like someone who handles butter regularly — but she has for some time now. Growing up in France, at age seven, she learned how to make crepes, then yogurt cake and profiteroles. Eventually, she turned into that insouciant breed of cook who can easily whip up coq au vin for an impromptu dinner party. “I’m the queen of the lastminute invites, so Friday I’m like, ‘I’m bored, who can we find?’ Let’s throw it together,” says the former editor of shelter magazines, who relishes home design as much as food, and whose table often has extra bodies around it in addition to her husband and two young children. In the family, there is also Patches, the guinea pig, and a Goldendoodle named Sadie (who, rumour has it, has been vying for a spot as a dinner guest, too). Together with her sister, Laurence, Martocq runs HeritageCookbook.com, a family business started in 2004 by their mother, Susan. People send treasured family recipes — an aunt’s inimitable gooey ginger cookies, say — accompanied by stories and photos that are then bound in books. The cookbooks are wildly popular (to date 250,000 have been printed), and make great personalized gifts. “Food is a big part of my
life,” Martocq says. “I come from a cooking heritage. My family is French — I learned to cook from my French grandmother. And being in the cookbook business, I spend a lot of time testing recipes.” That’s why when Martocq set out to design her 3,000-square-foot house, any old kitchen wouldn’t do. Certainly not the one that was there when the couple bought the “dark house with lots of wood and small windows” in 2011, in a leafy west-end neighbourhood in Toronto. The first priority, which saw the dwelling stripped to the bricks (the only original feature is the staircase), was to inject light. Pricey, but not difficult, because the house was on a large south-facing lot. Windows were installed on all three sides of the structure. (Trevor Gain and Associates did the drawings for the design and George and Brothers the construction). The most magnificent windows make up the voluminous addition to the back that soars 20 feet, commencing in a walnut ceiling. Nearby, grid-style shelves adorned with interesting art — a cluster of wispy thingamabobs that recall sea anemones — offer an arresting focal point. (Her husband actually makes them out of electric fan covers and twist ties.) Capacious and serene, the room is perfection: A pale L-shaped sofa conjures up a relaxing night in with une coupe of chilled Lillet. Be-

With her mother’s collected folk art as backdrop, Virginie Martocq’s kitchen is her workspace. The island is designed to be a workplace, not a dining surface. ‘It would have felt like the kids were going to treat me like a line cook,’ says Martocq.
The walnut-ceilinged living room features a wall of artwork, maximum light from a bank of windows and a comfortable sofa. yond is the open kitchen and dining room, decorated in a mix of traditional heirlooms and designer icons — a table passed down from Martocq’s grandmother lives under a Jonathan Adler light fixture. “Most of the items I inherited are from the ’60s — my grandmother was a great modernist and an interior designer,” Martocq says. “She bought cool experimental art, like Plexiglas cubes by the artist Gerald Gladstone, or collages by Harold Town.” Martocq’s husband’s side of the family is also represented, in the English ephemera — an ironstone bowl on the coffee table, a box containing miscel-
laneous antiques such as lockets with hair, 200 keys, crested rings and even gold teeth. Add to this an array of artwork. Though Martocq loves the lot, the selfprofessed “secret hoarder” admits to sometimes feeling overwhelmed by all the “wacky stuff — I have a love/hate relationship with it because I love minimalist spaces, so it’s hard.” Still, it’s this eclectic blend that gives the home uncommon edge. Have you ever, for instance, seen a slick Bulthaup kitchen matched with folk art? “My mom probably had 50 such pieces from Haiti, Cuba, Dominican Republic, The Bahamas and Brazil,” Martocq says of the vibrant
paintings, affixed to the glass backsplash where upper cabinets normally are — she chose not to have them, so she could display the works, hung with suction cups. There have been casualties: “Once a year something crashes in the middle of the night,” she says. It’s fun to see this lighter side of Bulthaup — the casual artwork, contrasting with the seriously chic German brand, known for its highbrow design. It is unfussy, confident, architectural. No distracting corbels or furrowed doors. No awkward protrusions from islands. Such kitchens seem to sprout organically from the floor and simply meld into place.
Since the layout is open concept, Martocq didn’t want to feel “dominated by heavy millwork and stainless steel” when having a meal at the dining table. The kitchen — this one is a warm walnut and white — should recede into the background. It does here, thanks to the integrated pantry, and that all the appliances are tucked into a galley (which leads to a black den made for watching TV, which Martocq forbids in the living room). And while most people want islands that also function as a dining surface, Martocq was dead against it. “It would have felt like the kids were going to treat me like a line cook, and I didn’t like that,” she says. “I want everyone to sit around the table. It’s very important to the way we live and entertain.” Meant for prepping (and admiring), the island’s countertop sports edges as thin as an Oreo’s innards. “I’m obsessed with this mitring detail on the sides,” Martocq says, running her fingers along it. Such a streamlined look isn’ t easy to f abricate. Bulthaup makes systems kitchens, meaning they are engineered in a factory using high-tech machinery. A custom millwork kitchen, conversely, may look lovely but it’s impossible to replicate the super-thinness of the island by hand. Admire it as you will — but, please, enjoy your coq au vin on the dining table just beyond.
barbecuing
Chefs stoke heated rivalry between charcoal and gas Lois Abraham The Canadian Press TORONTO — Barbecue expert Ted Reader, who has more than 50 types of grills, waxes eloquent when explaining his love for cooking with charcoal rather than gas. “A gas grill gives you instantaneous heat. Charcoal gives you love,” the chef says from his backyard. “You get that natural smoke coming off the charcoal. You get the heat of the fire. You get incredible temperature for searing, yet you can have it lasting a long period of time and give you that low and slow (heat) for barbecue.” Charcoal barbecues are enjoying a resurgence with consumers who want to expand their barbecuing skills, says Naz Cavallaro, resident chef for Canadian grill maker Broil King. “Charcoal has gone crazy over the past four years,” Cavallaro says. But both experts say there are reasons to choose a gas grill and pros and cons for

A consistent temperature is easier to maintain with gas, either natural or propane, and many homeowners opt to install a natural gas line so it’s “always there,” says Cavallaro. “You don’t have to worry about going and filling tanks, putting tanks in your car, putting yourself in an unsafe environment,” he says. With propane, a tank can run out during grilling. On the other hand, a
three-metre hose for a natural gas hookup prohibits relocation, whereas a propane-fuelled barbecue can be moved around the yard. When transporting a propane tank, never lay it on its side or put it in the back seat of a vehicle. Cavallaro finds standing a tank in a plastic milk crate works well. When installing a refilled propane tank he advises doing a leak test. Using a clean paint or basting brush, apply a mixture of equal parts

Slowly turn on the tank. If bubbles form, there’s a leak. When it comes to charcoal grills, many swear by the smoky taste they offer — but patience is required. “You lear n to read the fire and understand what wind direction’s happening, what the humidity’s doing,” says Reader, who teaches in the food and technology program at Niagara College and develops products for grocery and restaurant
chains. “If it’s dead air out there, there might not be enough oxygen in the air ... you won’t get as hot a burn.” Lighting charcoal isn’t difficult but isn’t as quick as gas. There are compressed paper cubes, electrical lighters and electronic hair dryer-type blowers available to start a charcoal grill. Reader likes the ease of using a charcoal chimney. “You fill this tube with charcoal, put crumpled newspaper under neath,
light the paper, it lights the charcoal. When it’s burning, dump it into your kettle and start cooking.” Never use lighter fluid, which imparts an unpleasant flavour to food. There are many styles of charcoal grills, ranging from kettles and vertical barrel cookers to eggshaped kamados that are ceramic and hold the temperature well. It doesn’t matter how cold it is outside. Reader says he has been able to fire (a ceramic charcoal grill) and maintain the temperature for hours. “It offers consistency; you can grill hot and fast and you can smoke low and slow. I was going to invest, I would invest in the best and I would look for a kamado cooker. I would put that in your backyard and learn how to use it. You won’t be needing to buy another grill or smoker for years. I’m talking 10 years plus.” No matter what type of grill you choose, both men advise reading the manual to get the most out of your appliance.

WORKING
Standing desks go high-tech STEPHEN PULVIRENT BLOOMBERG NEWS Sure, standing at your desk all day can be a bit of a pain, but spending the 9-to-5 leaning back or hunched over is terrible for you. Luckily, you no longer have to choose between the workstation equivalent of a juice cleanse or a pile of snacks. There’s a new crop of adjustable high-tech desks that do everything from tracking your standing and sitting patterns to playing your favourite tunes, including a desk that’s handsome enough it might convince you to stand all day anyway.
STIR KINETIC DESK F1
The Stir F1 is all hardwood, brushed metal, and slick glass, with a clean workspace that packs in a lot of gizmos. (Insert favourite supercar metaphor
here.) You actually have a profile within the desk’s software — yes, this desk has software — and it learns your standing and sitting habits over time, feeds that data to your Fitbit over the Bluetooth connection, and has Wi-Fi for receiving automatic software updates. Everything is operated by a touch screen. It’s total overkill in the best way. $4,190
A+R STORE
The LD120 is more a hi-fi system that will also support your laptop.
EVODESK
You can customize almost every part of the EvoDesk so you can get just what you need.
EVODESK
The EvoDesk is less a single product and more a platform. You can mix and match different coloured frames, and there are optional trays and monitor arms and various desktop materials (or just get a frame and use your own top), before finishing it off with an integrated set of Harman Kardon speakers to create the desk fit just for you. One of the best available add-ons is a $49 programmable adjuster that will move the desk to four preset height positions. There’s also a treadmill option, but save your pennies and just join a gym. From $599
ROBOTBASE ERGO
If you’re not ready to spend small-boat prices for the F1, the ERGO gets you most of the way there, with fewer frills and an easier-toswallow price tag. You still get a fully adjustable desk that learns your patterns and starts to predict your favourite height positions, along with a speaker, spots to hang your keys and bag, and even a wireless charging pad. In addition, there are all kinds of hands-free software features that run through an app; they look mostly redundant, so just focus on the hardware here. And be prepared to wait: the Indiegogo camp a i g n says they won’t be shipping for at least a month. $499
ARTIFOX
Artifox’s new standing desk has a spot for everything.
STIR
The Stir F1 is excessive in all the right ways.
LA BOITE CONCEPT + CC LAB LD120
It’s a speaker. No, wait, it’s a desk. The LD120 packs a seven-speaker 2.1 sound system into a desktop, mounts that on lacquered legs, covers it in leather, and then
encourages you to put your laptop right on top when you feel the need to get something done. There’s also a USB cord, as well as a standard headphone jack and an RCA jack for plugging into the on-board sound card. You’ll be able to get every bit of quality out of those high-quality music files on your laptop. (Or you could just stream Apple Music). And who knows? Having a desk you like using might even get you to work a little harder. $1,750
ARTIFOX STANDING DESK 01
The new Artifox standing desk is more of a B.Y.O.T. (bring your own tech) situation, but it’s ready for the most connected customer. The maple or walnut frame has a system of compartments to hide all your cables. Pegs hold headphones and bags off the floor, slots hold your phone and tablet upright, and a built-in writing surface lets you take notes right on the desk itself. If you’re willing to forsake adjustability and go straight to all standing, all the time, we can’t think of a more stylish option. $2,200
ORGANIZING
Trapped no more by clutter and others’ feelings THE WASHINGTON POST
Trying to cure yourself of clutter? Peter Walsh, organizing expert and author of new book Lose the Clutter, Lose the Weight, was a recent guest on The Post’s Home Front online chat. Here are just a few of the answers he gave to some of our most pressing clutter questions. They might just help you regain control of your space — and your life. Q How do you nicely tell inlaws to quit bringing their extra stuff into your house? A It’s tough, as you don’t want to offend them, but you also need to be honest and straightforward with them. Tell them in a calm way that you love them, but all the things they’re bringing over are overwhelming you. Decide together on the best course of action. Donations, perhaps? Q I would like to install a clothes storage system. Is there one that’s easy and durable to install you can recommend for a closet? I need
one that’s upright with storage baskets. A Check out most homegoods stores. Hanging canvas in-closet systems are great, expandable and very adaptable. Decide first how much space you have.
Q I go to antique shows and wonder why my grandparents and parents didn’t keep some of this stuff. So I have kept things. Now I find my adult children have no sentimentality. Will they wish I had kept it if I dispose of it? Or is this the way it should be? A Chat with your kids and

Peter Walsh, author of Lose the Clutter, Lose the Weight, suggests donating orphaned electronics components that are no longer being used.
SABAL HOMES
If your spouse likes to display things but you prefer a minimalist look, negotiate, negotiate, negotiate, says organizing expert Peter Walsh. Here, a fitting compromise: a coffee table neatly displays a few items, but across the way a kitchen counter remains clutter free. see what their thoughts are about this. What you find important, chances are they won’t. Decide together on what ‘treasures’ they would like from you and don’t worry about the rest.
Q What is your formula for
keeping clothes? How often should I get rid of excess? A You should only have three types of clothes in your closet: clothes that fit you now; clothes that you love and clothes that get you compliments when you wear them.
Q
POTTERY B BARN
TTo declutter closets, hanging canvas in-closet systems are great, expandable and very adaptable.
I was wondering if you have had success with your approach to de-cluttering for people who are hoarders. I am a hoarder and feel completely overwhelmed with my stuff. Is one of your books more suitable for approaching de-cluttering? A Check out David Tolin’s book Buried in Treasures. It’s a great place to start. You can bring about change, but you need to be gentle on yourself and seek help
from those who know what they’re talking about. Also try the National Association of Professional Organizers site, Napo.net, for organizers who specialize in hoarding.
Q I have a box of orphan electronics cords coaxial cables, A/V cables to connect TVs and DVD players, phone cords, Ethernet connectors from old modems. What can I do with these? A If you don’t need them, pack them up, say goodbye and send them off to a donation centre. Q What do you think of having yard sales? Are they worth the time and effort? A Yard sales are great for getting rid of a lot of stuff fast, but you have to accept that you’re not going to make much money. If you have patience, a nice day, some extra time and a great sense of humour, then have a yard sale. If not, donate. Q
My husband, six-month-
old daughter and I are finally downsizing to a onebedroom apartment right next to my work instead of a 2,000-square-foot home 35 miles away. A Start by looking at the space you’re moving to and be realistic about what will fit. Then pick the ‘treasures’ you most love and use to go into the new space. It won’t be easy, but the end result will be rewarding. Remember, you only have the space you have. Don’t overload it.
Q My wife and I are at odds with our decor decisions. She likes to display things on tables, shelves, basically any surface that will hold an object. I prefer minimalism and clear, clean tables and open spaces. How can we reconcile our different tastes for decorating? A Negotiate. Negotiate. Negotiate. Start first by talking about what you both want from the space — how you want to feel in the room. Once you’ve agreed on that,
Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is also a great resource for decluttering, says Peter Walsh. then decide together what will work and what won’t. It’s all about creating a space that works for you both. Oh, and keep your sense of humour!
Q What’s your opinion on The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. I read it recently and I might try its principles. A I think anything that helps with de-cluttering and organizing is worth using! Kondo’s book is great. If it helps, go for it! Note: The interview has been shortened and edited for clarity.

Tenugui towels make stylish decor Yukako Oishi The Japan News/Yomiuri TOKYO — Tenugui traditional hand towels come in many different colours and patterns. They can also be used as chic interior decorations, including cushion covers and noren curtains. “ Yo u c a n a c c e n t u a t e your interiors by hanging them up or draping them over something,” said Miho Akiba, a publicist for the Kamawanu tenugui store in Tokyo. Tenugui are plain-weave cotton cloths about 30 centimetres wide and 90 cm long. With their various motifs and colours, they can
change a room’s atmosphere quickly and easily, Akiba said. She showed how to use a tenugui, for example, to decorate a regular size cushion about 40 cm long: ■■ Place a tenugui flat. ■■ Place a cushion diagonally in the centre of the tenugui, aligning the cushion’s corners with the centre line of the tenugui’s longer side. ■■ Fold the ends of the tenugui over the corners of the cushion. ■■ Tuck in the ends of the folded parts to make them look neat. Turn the cushion over to show the front of the tenugui. “The cushion cover remains visible, so when you
choose the tenugui, think about whether its colour and motif suit the cushion cover,” Akiba said. For cushions about 30 cm long, tenugui can be made into covers. Fold one into a regular square and hem it. “You can use tenugui freely, such as covering the cushion or wrapping the tenugui around it, depending on the size of each cushion,” Akiba said. Among the wide selection of patterns and colours, morning glory and goldfish designs are especially suited for the summer. Motifs that originated in the Edo period (1603-1867), such as mame-shibori (spotted pattern) and maru-giku (round chrysanthemum)
are also recommended, as are striped patterns. “There are also modern motifs themed on musical instruments, bicycles, coffee beans and so on,” Akiba said. “You can choose tenugui based on the taste of the user and the type of room (where it’s used).” Two or more tenugui with the same motif can be hung with curtain clips to make noren split curtains and ordinary curtains. “If you make noren, hang two of the same tenugui, showing their motifs symmetrically, so that the noren looks well-balanced,” Akiba said. Tenugui towels usually sell for about $8 each.
