Preventing mistakes before they happen First tip: Know your limitations KAREN TURNER OTTAWA CITIZEN Bryan Baeumler is hardpressed to pick the top three blunders do-it-yourselfers make that drive him crazy. “They all bug me equally,” quips the brawny host of HGTV’s hit shows Leave it to Bryan, Disaster DIY and House of Bryan, who last month released his first book Measure Twice: Tips and Tricks from the Pros to Help You Avoid the Most Common DIY Disasters (HarperCollins). “Most of the mistakes people make happen before they even lift a tool,” says Baeumler, who pinpoints a whopping 191 DIY no-nos in his new book, but admits

that number could have been higher. “There’s always more information you can add, but at some point, you have to stop.” With his hectic TV schedule — he also owns a construction company in Burlington, Ont., is the pitchman for Lowe’s, makes regular appearances at home and renovation trade shows, runs the Baeumler Family Foundation with his wife, Sarah, and is father to four children under 10 — it’s taken the Oakville native two years to write the hefty guide. “I didn’t have time any earlier,” he confesses during a recent phone interview from his trusty pickup parked along the side the road. In Measure Twice, the consummate teacher and experienced builder aims to help homeowners “anticipate common problems and to use that knowledge to determine which jobs you can tackle on your own and which ones require a professional.”

BAEUMLER’S SECRET TO SUCCESS

1. 2. 3.

Get up early. Work your ass off. Love what you’re doing.

Divided into 12 chapters, each project — from simple painting to drywalling, tiling, building decks and installing flooring — is rated out of 10 (with 10 being the most difficult) and includes a list of materials to tackle the job and tips for doing it right. The lowest rating in the book is a four, given to installing insulation; the only 10 out of 10 goes to HVAC (heat, ventilation and air conditioning) basics.

Baeumler Factor unexpected

BACKSPLASH BEAUTY

expenses into renovation budget

Tiles enhance kitchen JENNIFER COX For the Montreal Gazette

CONTINUED FROM F1 You won’t find any how-to instructions in the book, however, for doing plumbing and electrical work or underpinning a basement or cutting rafters. “I don’t think any homeowner who is not properly trained and very experienced should be doing that kind of work,” Baeumler writes, adding, “You have to know your limits.” T h at ’s a l e s s o n B a e u m l e r learned years ago. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario with degrees in political science and business, he considered going to law school, but quickly realized he’d rather strap on a tool belt than tote a briefcase to go to work every day. “I would have been a miserable office dweller,” says the straighttalking 40-year-old, who credits his dad, an aircraft engineer, for teaching him how to work with tools and develop a love for building. “I was lucky to grow up in that environment,” adds Baeumler, who is as friendly and funny on the phone as he is on TV. “Construction or renovation is fun. It’s not a job to me. When you work at something that you love, it’s not work.” Rescuing homeowners from their shoddy handiwork was the inspiration for his first show, Disaster DIY, which debuted in 2007. Five seasons later, Leave it to Bryan followed. On this show, homeowners must trust Baeumler to remodel one of three areas of their house. They hand over the cash and he makes all of the renovation decisions. And then came House of Bryan, which has turned out to be one of HGTV’s highest-rated series. Why? Fans got to watch Baeumler and his crew build his family a 3,700-square-foot dream home in Season One, then a stunning family cottage on Georgian Bay in Season Two. In each episode, viewers follow the construction process from the ground up and get a glimpse of Baeumler as the soft-hearted dad, patient husband (he and wife Sarah often butt heads on design decisions) and all-around goofy guy. Season Three will soon be wrapping up on the renovation of the family’s new country estate — Baeumler calls it their “forever home” — set on 20 acres outside Oakville. With its many glitzy chandeliers and white furnishings, the name House of Bryan: In the Sticks does not do it justice. “The first thing I tell people is we don’t do a renovation in a half an hour,” says Baeumler, who accepts part of the blame for DIYers thinking they can tackle projects that are beyond their skill set.

THE CANADIAN PRESS

Measure Twice author Bryan Baeumler — who is a political science and business graduate — says he’d rather strap on a tool belt than tote a briefcase to work every day.

What happens behind the scenes is often as important as the main event, and this can be said about decor, too. Just as a painted wall can provide the perfect backdrop for a gorgeous piece of furniture or artwork, a tile backsplash can transform the overall design of a kitchen or bathroom. “Homeowners can really change the whole tone depending on the direction they decide to take with their backsplash,” said Kristina Panzera, marketing manager at CIOT. “It can become a focal point with a wow effect, such as a stunning mosaic or vibrant colour ceramic tile, or it can blend into the cabinets to leave the accent to a gorgeous marble countertop, for example.” “In addition to the traditional mosaic, there is an increasing amount of sticky mosaic tiles of very good quality that gives the same desired effect at (a lower) cost,” said Jean-Francois Theriault, flooring merchandiser and Rona L’Entrepot expert. “Stainless steel is very popular in this product category.” He noted that neutral colours and pastel shades, as well as matte finishes, natural stones, a variety of patterns and shapes, and hexagonal forms, are all popular for backsplashes. For those who want to go more eclectic, Panzera recommended backsplash wall tiles in metallic finishes such as silver or gold, and in rectangular formats. Another trend in backsplashes that is making waves is the ‘dis-

tressed’ look, with a warmer livedin and worn-out feel that comes with the look of years past. “How does this translate to backsplashes?” Panzera asked. “There is a comeback for terracotta (tiles) again, with a more worn look, but they come in smaller classical sizes that suit backsplashes. “Another look that goes with this trend is the brick look; these are made of porcelain tile, so they are very easy to maintain and are much easier to clean than real bricks, which have a high absorption rate. “The look goes back to the basics and you really feel the raw material, which is clay, in these tiles,” she said. “They give a very natural, earthy feel. “The tones they are presented in are also very earthy, with warm greys and whites as well as taupe.” Tone-on-tone patterns are very ‘in’ for modern backsplashes because they create dimension without an additional colour in the space, Panzera explained. “All in all, linear patterns or rectangular tiles are usually what move our customers,” she said. Because backsplashes usually occupy a smaller area, homeowners are often willing to consider high-end tiles for these spaces. And, as Theriault pointed out, given their resistance and durability, it’s money well spent — even on an upgrade, because backsplashes offer true longevity. “Since it is a relatively small area, customers feel that they can splurge and go toward more expensive materials to get the look that they really want,” Panzera said.

DIY ADVICE

1.

Have a plan before you start any home improvement project, and get all necessary building permits and surveys for major jobs. “I know it can be expensive and time-consuming to do surveys, get drawings and pull permits, but building codes were created for a reason. If you do this work wrong, you can put your home and family in danger.” “When you watch shows like mine, it’s easy to get the impression you can quickly turn any rundown home into a showpiece. “The truth is those episodes are filmed over several weeks, and many hours of footage are edited down to the 22 minutes you see on TV. … I promise you it’s harder and more time-consuming than it looks.” But he fir mly believes most people have the capacity to learn if they make the time and are willing to put in the effort. “We’ve all made mistakes on jobs around the house. But I hope after your read this book, your mistakes will be smaller and less frequent.”

2.

Be realistic about what you can and can’t do. “Bad DIY renovations are one of the surest ways to lower the value of your home.”

3.

Leave room in the budget for unexpected expenses. “I’d say about 80 per cent of renos go at least 50 per cent over budget, at least in part because professionals are ultimately called in to fix mistakes or to complete work that was started by homeowners who turned out to be less handy they’d thought,” Baeumler writes.

Cabin Pressure’s cues on cottage decor into something else,”’ McAllister said. He recalled in Season 1 of Cabin Pressure, they painted a TV bench, which they also covered with a stone top. With a sink placed on it, the piece was transformed into a “swanky upscale” bathroom vanity which cost “virtually nothing.” Ryan said they took just under two metres off the top of a 10-metre-tall antenna to create a floor lamp. “We run a lighting cable up through it, we build a base, and we put a lovely Edison bulb on there and a big black lampshade. All of a sudden, we’ve got something that cost us $25 or $30 which looks like we found it in an art gallery.”

LAUREN LA ROSE THE CANADIAN PRESS TORO N T O — As C o l i n McAllister and Justin Ryan set out to refurbish their own country cabin, their latest foray into cottage renovation proved significantly tougher than the first. The Scottish design duo documented their transformation of an A-frame log cabin in “essentially good condition” in the debut season of Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure. The series retur ned March 22 on Cottage Life. Season 2 sees the pair renovate a tiny rustic lakefront property in Haliburton, Ont., which Ryan described as a “really rough fixer-upper.” “We had to deal with every type of problem you could imagine,” he said. “Everything went wrong. The house had been infested by every type of entomological creature. “We found dead mice. We found dead beavers. We found dead animals everywhere. Pigeons, birds, the lot. Raccoons, everything. However, we love the challenge more than anything that we do in our professional lives. We love the drive to beautify.” The duo acknowledged not everyone wants or as-

BLUE ANT MEDIA

Colin McAllister, left, and Justin Ryan share tips on simple and cheap decor pires to live in a cottage. However, McAllister and Ryan said there are decorative tips homeowners can apply to their cosy homes away from home, as well as city dwellings.

1. CLEAN HOUSE

“Get rid of the things you don’t like, things that annoy you, things that are broken. You’re never going to use these items,” said McAllister. “Things you have duplicates of, get rid of them, and actually clear out some space so that you actually have some breathing space.”

2. CREATE A DESIGN PLAN

“The mantra we say time and time again: to fail to plan is to plan to fail,” said Ryan. In addition to having a

rage sales and charity and thrift stores are ripe sources for items that can be reinvented. “We find amazing things that we can repurpose, and I think that’s what it’s all about for us.”

3. SEEK OUT VINTAGE FINDS

4. TRANSFORM EXISTING PIECES

5. INCORPORATE NATURAL ELEMENTS

“We’ve used birch bark that we’ve found lying on the forest floor. (When) framed it looks gorgeous,” said Ryan. “We’ve found old pieces of timber lying in the water, like driftwood, that we’ve brought in that we’ve mounted on casters. Hey, presto! An instant coffee table. We’ve used old building pallets to decorate walls. We’ve used small crates fastened to the wall as shelves. We’re all about the free.”

MAKE IT RIGHT

Shining light on pros and cons of LEDs versus CFLs MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

Earth Hour is today from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. — the one hour we flick off all our lights — and it’s a good reminder to make greener choices, including with our lighting. When it comes to “green” lights, we have a lot of choices. I’ve been going to all the home shows lately and the stuff I’ve seen, especially with LEDs, will blow you away. Light fixtures for LEDs used to be very limited, but that’s no longer the case. There are dimmable LEDs; LEDs that change colours; and LED strips you can install below kitchen cabinetry and along stairs. There

are also solar LEDs, LEDs for chandeliers and on and on. It’s no secret my favourite green lights are LEDs. They save energy and no other light lasts longer. On average, LEDs last about 25,000 hours. That’s 22 years. The runner-up, which is compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) — those light bulbs shaped like screws — last about 8,000 to 10,000 hours, which is less than half the average lifespan of an LED. I have LEDs all around my house, inside and out, including on my deck, in my garage and along the exterior. We have even started using LEDs on set. But they’re expensive and some families simply can’t afford to switch every single light they have to an LED right now. So what do you do if you want to go green but you can’t af ford LEDs? One strategy is to slowly make the switch.

ALEX SCHULDTZ/The Holmes Group

Homeowners today have plenty of options when it comes to LEDs, such as under-cabinet kitchen LEDs and exterior LEDs that are solar-powered. For example, you might start by replacing the lights you use most often with LEDs so you get the biggest payoff on saving energy and then tackle bulbs in other fixtures. In the meantime, for those lights that are still waiting to be switched to LED, CFLs are a good alternative. Unfortunately, CFLs have

1545 Neville Dr

should indicate that or have the “HG” symbol on it. But how to get rid of these products safely or handle them safely if they break should be common knowledg e. Many municipalities have recycling prog rams and depots that take old CFLs and some retailers — such as Canadian Tire (depending on where you live), Ikea and Rona — do too. And depending on the province you live in, there might be recycling programs that specifically deal with CFLs, such as Ontario’s Take Back the Light and B.C.’s LightRecycle. Also, ProjectPorchlight.com is a great resource for finding CFL recycling outlets. The information is out there. Do your homework and spread the word. It’s the first step to make it right. been taking a lot of heat in the news recently, which has made some people nervous about using them. The issue is that CFLs contain a small amount of mercury in them — actually, mercury gas as well as argon. (Inside CFLs is a coating of phosphor and when electrically charged, the argon and mercury va-

pours collide with the coating of phosphor and this process produces visible light with very little heat.) If we were to just throw CFLs in the garbage, there’s a really big chance they’ll get crushed and then that mercury gas can escape into the air, ground and water. But this isn’t news or at least it shouldn’t be. That’s why we recycle CFLs — as we do batteries, paint and old cellphones. We don’t just throw these items in the garbage; they can contain hazardous materials and, in some cases, their parts can be recycled. Practically every part of a CFL can be recycled and reused. So, are CFLs bad? No. They save a lot of energy and since incandescent bulbs are being weaned off the market, CFLs are sensible options. But we have to be smart about the way we deal with them. For example, any product that contains mercury

GREENHOUSES

Plants go undercover in the garden DEAN FOSDICK THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Greenhouses aren’t the only great coverups for gardeners determined to extend their growing seasons. High tunnels, low tunnels and caterpillar tunnels work well, too. Also known as hoop houses or row covers, the tunnels consist of Ushaped metal or PVC (polyvinyl chloride) ribs draped by thin, plastic sheets. They provide shade for sun-sensitive crops, protect tender plants from frost, help control insects and boost yields. Why build hoop houses rather than more traditional greenhouses? Primarily because they don’t need artificial heat when seasonal temperatures drop. “Greenhouses are costp ro h i b i t ive, ” s a i d D a n Phelps, program co-ordinator and specialty crop specialist with the Kansas Rural Center in Whiting. “You have to heat these structures all winter long and that usually means fuel costs. With hoop houses, passive solar heating is enough to grow crops on both sides of the calendar.” You can walk under high tunnels as well as many of the caterpillar tunnels that resemble poly-covered Quonset huts linked end-toend, or caterpillars. “That’s a big plus, especially in rainy locations,” Phelps said. “You’re able to plant, harvest and cultivate even if conditions are wet outdoors.” Sogg y soils can delay planting by several weeks in early spring, and frozen ground also will prevent planting. “But that’s not a problem (when growing)

Poly tunnels range from the simple — like these row covers in the foreground — to the sublime, greenhouse-like hoop houses on the right, at the South Whidbey Tilth Garden near Langley, Wash. The multi-purpose large structure is tall enough to work under while the row covers keep weeds down, protect crops from chills and can be pulled aside when working the soil. under high tunnels,” Phelps said. Along with extending the growing seasons, high tunnels can double the size of your harvest, he said. “Tomatoes, for example, are notorious for (moisturecaused) blemishes. In outdoor conditions, you’re probably throwing away 30 per cent of the crop because of blemishes. You can reduce that to five to 10 per cent us-

ing tunnels,” he said. High tunnels are a relatively new development for home gardeners in North America, but it’s expected they’ll soon become popular, said Cary Rivard, director of Kansas State University’s Olathe Horticulture Research and Extension Center. “One of the things that has really helped open up this option is that the indus-

try is starting to make small kits that can withstand high wind conditions, and there are some homemade options available,” Rivard said. “They also would make great cold frames or greenhouses for growing transplants in the spring,” he said. Keep in mind that the smaller the tunnel, the less thermal mass it contains, Rivard said. That means it will heat up and cool down

more rapidly. “So if they are building very small tunnels, they are going to need to be able to ventilate them really well in the summer using tall side walls and well-ventilated end walls,” he said. “Similarly, during the wintertime, a small tunnel will cool off very quickly.” Hoop houses vary in type and size, but side walls often are four to six feet high

and topped by rounded rooflines. The hoops are spaced more closely together for strength in areas that get heavy snow. Caterpillar houses are narrower and barely tall enough for gardeners to stand erect. Low tunnels are even smaller — generally around two feet high. These are recommended for coldseason crops like greens and certain herbs.

HIGH-TECH HOMES

Technology paves way for smarter homes REBECCA KEILLOR FOR VANCOUVER SUN Yo u c a n n ow u s e yo u r smartphone to unlock the front door, dim the lights and run the bath. Whether your motivation is security, convenience, environmental concerns or all three, home automation is where we’ve arrived.

Better bath time Blu Bathworks, which has more than 100 showrooms across North America, recently released its electronica digital tapware collection, which allows people to control their sinks, showers or tub faucets using wireless technology. “There’s an app that can be downloaded that basically allows the user to turn their shower or bathtub on or off from their iPhone or iPad. So, for instance, if you’re in the bedroom you can turn on the shower from your bed and you can fill your bath the same way,” says Paula Coen, director of marketing for Blu Bathworks. The temperature and volume can both be controlled using presets, with presets available for up to three different users. Blu Bathworks has also just launched a sleek-looking shower application called the vision wheel as part of its electronica line. Similar in look to an iPod, it is thermostatic and can control up to three outlets such as hand shower, head shower and body sprays. “With sustainability at the forefront of everything we’re doing there’s an integrated indicator which displays your water usage and your current temperature reading so that’s handy for anyone who is conscious of water consumption,” says Coen.

Lock logic San Francisco company August has brought new meaning to the idea of house keys with its Smart Lock,

The Smart Lock system by San Francisco company August allows homeowners to send virtual keys via text message to anyone with a smartphone. which it launched last fall. “It came from personal experience of having to rush home and let in my housekeeper or friends visiting for the weekend and thinking, ‘Gee, with us all having these smartphones now, there’s got to be a better way,’ ” says August CEO Jason Johnson, who founded the company just over two years ago with designer Yves Behar. They devised a virtual key system that a homeowner can send to any smartphone user by way of a text message, which is then downloaded through an app and communicates with a physical attachment that fits onto the inside of the door to unlock it. These keys can be given out and cancelled at the owner’s discretion and any time one is used to access the home, the owner is sent this information in real time. “It takes less than 10 minutes to install, no service fee required. It’s very beautiful, all metal, (a) very secure device,” says Johnson. Taking it one step further — allowing homeowners to remotely unlock the door for visitors who arrive and don’t have smartphones —

the company has released August Connect, which connects the August Smart Lock with your Wi-Fi network.

Feel-good gadgets Afshin Mehin, founder of Vancouver-based company Woke, specializes in plastic meets pixels products. For New York company Quirky, Mehin developed smart light switches which connect to the Internet and treat light as a therapeutic source, helping people understand why light makes them feel good. Woke has also recently released a device called the TZOA, which can be worn or docked at home and measures the air quality through “an ultra small optical particle counter” that is then translated into humanspeak through an accompanying smartphone app. “The challenge was to make a very immaterial thing like air feel more tangible and engaging, interesting and approachable,” says Mehin. Woke’s TZOA device measures air quality and translates it into human-speak through a smart phone app.
