First root through your clothes closet for clues JURA KONCIUS THE WASHINGTON POST Designer and writer Erin Gates, 35, lives in a white clapboard Colonial in Newton, Mass., with her husband, two dogs and a leopardprint stair Erin runner. Gates G a t e s pens the popular blog Elements of Style, where her advice is glamorous yet practical and often served up with humour. In her just-published book Elements of Style: Designing a Home and a Life, Gates shares secrets including dressing up a closet to finding a kitchen counter material that will fit your lifestyle. The book has lots of lists and charts and advice. She’s got a great list of house-
warming gift ideas (terrariums instead of flowers, for example, or a return-address rubber stamp) and assorted tips for renters (if you’re not allowed to use huge nails to hang a weighty mirror in an entry hall, try leaning a tall wall mirror behind a console table). Her primers on the 12 best sofa styles and 45 favourite paint colours are keepers. I spoke to Gates recently about her book and her insights into helping people discover their personal style.
Q
How do you find your own style if you haven’t a clue? A Go through your closet. Your wardrobe says a lot about the colours and patterns and textures you are comfortable with. If you see a lot of bright colours and patterns, this is what you are drawn to and should do in your rooms.

City, not developers, most responsible for growth STU NIEBERGALL I recently participated in a panel discussion at a conference related to housing. The debate question for the panel was the meaning of growth — its benefits and challenges in our community. In addition, the panel was challenged to discuss the extent to which the housing market is a force that needs “managing” by the public sector, or is a form of economic democracy where people vote with their home purchasing decisions, rather than by ballot. The conference planners were hoping to achieve an energized, maybe even confrontational debate. One of the panellists was an academic/environmentalist who would represent the argument that low-density “urban sprawl” is expensive to maintain, restricts opportunities for walking and cy-
cling and does not allow for effective transit service. Of course, as the president and CEO of the Regina and Region Home Builders’ Association, I was expected to be the promoter of urban sprawl in Regina; representing the interests of developers whose sole purpose was seen as to expand our cities, leaving them with all of this new infrastructure that we can hardly afford. It was expected to be a spirited debate. First up was the academic, who presented an articulate and well thought-out perspective on how urban expansion needs to be compatible with the priorities that citizens outlined in Regina’s new official community plan (OCP), which includes mixed-use neighbourhoods, transportation choices and environmental sustainability. Now the microphone was turned over to me. To everyone’s surprise, I completely agreed. No debate here. I explained that the community developers I represent not only support, but embrace the idea of effective community planning, which in-
cludes complete communities, more choice in housing forms, increased density, designs that promote multiple forms of transportation, and maximizing the use of infrastructure investment. They have a vision to create better neighbourhoods, with improved amenities where individuals and families can truly work, play and live. However, what is often not understood is that the only community that a developer can build, is the one that the municipal government approves. It is easy to criticize land developers for the design of neighbourhoods or for “urban sprawl,” but in actuality, it is the municipal government who ultimately determines how the city’s urban footprint shapes out. The municipality is responsible for the OCP, as well as the zoning regulations, development standards, right down to the building standards, which are the tools that cities use for implementing the plan. For decades across Canada, municipal officials have focused the public discus-
sion on the “challenges of growth,” zeroing in on the impending effect that an ever-expanding community, driven by “unregulated development that has run amok,” might have on taxpayers. In fact, the reality is that nothing could be further from the truth. Creating new neighbourhoods for a growing population is one of the most regulated industries in Canada. The neighbourhood design approval process, the engineering requirements and inspection, right down to regulations for every house that is built, ensures standards are met for both design and safety. And new neighbourhoods always represent the latest thinking from the urban planning community which is embedded in the municipal approval process. Where the disconnect often comes in truly delivering the “priorities of citizens” as outlined in the OCP is when the municipality has not completed the more detailed work to implement it, such as updating municipal policies, sector plans, neighbourhood plans, and rule
books such as zoning bylaws, development standards, building standards etc. The Regina and Region Home Builders’ Association has been advocating ever since the Regina OCP was adopted, that getting the other regulatory work complete must be a high priority for the City of Regina. Our development community and home building industry embraced many of the policies set out in the new OCP; yet, in many ways we are now stuck in a development purgatory, unable to really deliver on the plan, because the City of Regina has failed to deliver the planning and regulatory requirements in a timely manner. City planners have the important responsibility of ensuring that the city can accommodate future growth. This has already been determined in the OCP to be 30 per cent growth within the current city foot print and 70 per cent in new greenfield areas on the city’s urban fringe. As 30 per cent of new development is to be within the existing city footprint, city
planners must also ensure that they are addressing level of service shortfalls with infrastructure in existing areas, and identifying and reducing risks in the existing system. This, they will accomplish, in large part, through the completion of their master plans, such as the transportation master plan and waste water master plan. If the city cannot deliver on these plans and coordinate them effectively and efficiently with the other regulatory responsibilities they have yet to complete, that is when development runs amok. How our city shapes out in the next five to 25 years will be determined by how well the municipality deals with these issues. Our industry can only build what our city allows us to. We need the city to ensure enough resources are in place to deliver on their part of the equation, so that our industry can deliver on ours. Stu Niebergall is president and CEO of the Regina Region Home Builders’ Association.

There’s an art to choosing art PATRICK LANGSTON POSTMEDIA NEWS
CHOOSING ART
MICHAEL PARTENIO
In the guest room of her house, one of Erin Gates’s favourite spaces, the lightest pink (Benjamin Moore Blanched Coral) covers the walls, but the femininity is toned down with graphic black-and-white accents.
Style Consider
your lifestyle and choose wisely CONTINUED FROM F1 If you have a more muted wardrobe, more businesslike, then I advise people to decorate with neutrals and clean lines.
Q What other tools can you use? A Pinterest has been the most helpful tool for people to really explain and figure out their style. You can look back at your pins and say, ‘Oh, I have 57 linen couches pinned here. I must love them.’ We always ask clients to make a board of anything they are attracted to, whether a wall colour or type of chair or a fabric. When you look at your pins cohesively, trends will pop out. Q What else do you have to consider? A Be honest about your lifestyle. If you are somebody who doesn’t throw things away or has lots of stuff or kids who have a lot of hobbies and toys, a streamlined space that is super modern with little storage will not function for you. Do you have dogs? Kids? That should play into the fabrics and rugs you choose, and the style of furniture and materials. You don’t want glass coffee tables or white silk fabrics if you have kids. Q How do you add personality to a room? A Add antique or vintage goods or hand-medowns. If you see a room with brand-new, high-
end and fancy things, it looks unlived-in, like a hotel room. I always try to bring something vintage or antique with a little patina. Look for things a bit quirky. If it’s too perfect, there is no warmth to it. Add a funky upholstered chair or cool piece of art. Make sure there is something unique that is not in everyone’s Pottery Barn catalogue and seven people in your neighbourhood have as well.
Q What is one of your favourite neutral paint colours? A My favourite is Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist. Q What
are five home accessories no home should be without? A A beautiful collection of books; greenery (either a fresh flower arrangement, plant or tree); an amazing-smelling candle; a work of art you absolutely love; and beautiful trays for coffee tables or as a catch-all atop a bar or in the bedroom to corral jewelry.
Q How can you make a
personal statement in a tiny apartment? A Use wall colour. Dramatic wall colour changes everything, especially in a small room. The adage that small spaces can’t be in dark colours is wrong; it actually makes them feel bigger. Another way is to incorporate a large-scale work of art; the dramatic size will be especially impactful in a smaller-scale space.
The first question Don Monet of Ottawa’s Cube Gallery asks when buying art for himself is, “Does it take my breath away in some way? Is there something about it that stops me?” He then assesses technical qualities such as colour and composition and that critical issue: what about staying power? If an artist relies overly on something like a visual joke to catch your attention, that joke will pale before long, says Monet. We own a small piece by artist Tony Clark. It shows a little girl, her face pure glee, skipping rope high above a city. We bought it several years ago precisely because it took my breath away, and its narrative — arresting but not a visual joke — still thrills me as much as skipping in the sky thrills that imaginary little girl. One more suggestion: Try something different. If you usually go with traditional landscapes, consider a bold abstract or a sculpture. Art should provoke you, not confirm your biases.
TO CO-ORDINATE OR NOT?
“People are decorating with a lot of colour lately because open-concept homes have less wall space,” says Eddie Baroud at Koyman Galleries in Ottawa. “They want a showpiece, so they’re buying art with bold colours.” Interior designer Tanya Collins, whose services include art selection and display, doesn’t necessarily agree. “In general, clients should buy what they love. I don’t believe in matching art to a room.” She also likes to mix things up. “In a hyper-modern space, you get a little edge if you have a landscape in an ornate frame. It creates interest.” If you decide to match art and decor, hunt down art with colours and textures close to the main ones in the room.
PATRICK LANGSTON/ Postmedia News
If a piece of art moves you, then buy it. This girl skipping rope has had a long-lasting effect on writer Patrick Langston.

FRAMING
shadow box frame for a small, colourful painting that cost $5 at an Ecuadorean market. The painting looks like a million bucks.
A good framing shop will u s e U V- p r o t e c t ive g l a s s to reduce fading from daylight. Look for the label “conservation glass” on the back of the framed piece, says Baroud. Anti-glare glass, which costs about 15 per cent more than regular glass, isn’t usually necessary unless the piece is hung above a lamp, he adds. Anti-glare glass can distort the image, but good quality will reduce the distortion. Ask your framer to show you the difference between regular and anti-glare glass. Should you fork out big bucks to frame an inexpensive painting? “It can make it look like a showpiece, but it depends where it’s going and what it means to you,” says Baroud. We once spent $150 on a

HANGING
“A lot of times, people get the scale all wrong,” says Collins. “A small painting looks better in a smaller space. Or mix small and medium and maybe one large painting in a big area, and use a mix of styles and colours.” If you are hanging just one painting, its centre should be Discuss organ donation with your family. Maybe, thanks to you, life can go on.
at eye level. If you and your fellow homeowner are of different heights, split the difference. And remember that a lot of colourful window treatments or other decor can draw your attention away from a painting that you might want to spotlight. Don’t be afraid to hang art in the kitchen as long as the room is well-ventilated and the art isn’t close to work areas. Collins has added pop to a powder room’s charcoal grey walls by hanging prints and sketches on white and offwhite paper. “Up close and personal like that, you can really appreciate (them),” she says. A sculpture can be tricky to place. Baroud suggests moving it around until it feels right. “It’s like all art: It finds its own space.”

Comfy kitchen companions ANDREA NEBLETT POSTMEDIA NEWS
Problem Food shows and apps have you itching to get your Rachael Ray or Ricardo on. But all those hours standing in the kitchen have left your tootsies too tender and your aging knees achy.
Solved While gel mats won’t steal the show as far as floor cov-
erings go, they’re super supportive and a cook’s best friend. Gel Pro dubs theirs the “ultimate anti-fatigue floor mats.” They’re put together with Gel Pro’s proprietary gel and “energy-return” foam, helping to relieve pressure and physical stress from long bouts of standing on hard surfaces. They’re also designed to contour to your feet and boost circulation, the company claims. And bonus: they have a non-slip bottom layer and a spill-
friendly top surface. The Gel Pro Plush and Classic are two of the most visually appetizing styles, allowing you to cook up a custom look. If you’re used to the $10 to $20 mat from the hardware store, you might find Gel Pro’s price range of $70 to $120 US a bit pricey. On the other hand, you might find it’s worth it when your culinary efforts earn rave reviews. See GelPro.com for more information.

Happy (safe and healthy) holidays!
Making souvenirs fit in your home LISA EVANS POSTMEDIA NEWS
MIKE HOLMES Make it Right
The holidays are rolling in and plenty of people will be welcoming guests to their homes. Some of you might be wondering, “Do I have enough time to redo the bathroom or kick the kitchen up a notch?” You don’t. Schedule those jobs for next year. Just planning and hiring the right contractors will take months — at least it should. If all you need to do is upgrade a few appliances or change some plumbing or lighting fixtures, it can be done. But don’t overwhelm yourself this close to the holidays — it’s a recipe for bad decisions and slapdash work. Even replacing your countertops could be a bigger job than you expect. Why risk being broke and disappointed for the holidays? Here are a couple of smaller projects you can do now that will keep you in good standing over the season.
Give the landscape a lift Clean up the yard, if there’s not snow on the ground already. Rake the leaves, top off the mulch and wrap evergreen shrubs to protect them over winter against snow, wind, ice and hail. Make sure walkways and entrances are safe and properly lit. Keep your entryways clear of ice and snow and follow up with a de-icer. I like gravel and sand because it’s safe for pets, your lawn, mortar and concrete paths. If you need to replace
HOME DEPOT
Electrical fires are more common in winter. Make sure your system can handle the extra electrical demands. any exterior lights or bulbs, or get any entrance or walkway lights fixed, do so now. You are liable if anyone gets hurt on your property because they slip and fall. A n y e l e c t r i c a l wo rk should be done by a licensed electrical contractor. And keep in mind electrical fires are more common in winter. Make sure your system can handle any holiday lights and the extra electrical demands over winter — for instance any extra heating, cooking and lighting. Remember, we get fewer hours of daylight so we need more light. Let’s get it safely.
Spruce up with paint There’s time to tackle a few interior paint jobs before December. Painting is not a major task, but it can make a huge difference. Just make sure it’s done well. A
bad paint job is an eyesore, and it’s much harder to ignore when you’re stuck indoors during winter. Some quick tips: Always go for quality paint; repair any holes or damage to the surface first; and make sure the surface you’re painting is smooth and clean. If you live in an older home — for instance, 30 years or older — the paint on the trim, mouldings and doors could contain lead. If you’re not sure, use a lead test kit before sanding or doing repairs. Always make sure there is plenty of ventilation, whether you hire a pro to paint or do it yourself. Even if the paint is labelled low-VOC or VOC-free, the pigments used could contain VOCs, especially darker colours (lighter colours have lower levels of VOCs).
The need for proper ventilation is why painting isn’t too popular over winter. Keeping windows open means losing heat. But paying a little extra for heat is better than breathing in toxic fumes.
Souvenirs can be great reminders of fun times while travelling and make unique conversation starters. But too often they’re bought on the fly, without much thought into how they’ll look back at home. “What can look fabulous in a totally open Mexican restaurant can look completely out of place in our winterized and closed Canadian homes,” interior designer Lisa Goulet says. To keep your finds from ending up hidden in a closet, Goulet encourages vacationers to think before they buy. Where in their home will they put it and how will it look with existing decor? People who like to travel often have eclectic taste and enjoy having a home that reflects that, adds interior designer Ellen Lee. She agrees a little strategy can go a long way toward turning souvenirs into decor that will pro-

vide lasting memories. Some tips for choosing vacation souvenirs: Collect Christmas ornaments: Trimming your tree with mementoes of your travels is a great way to evoke pleasant memories. Since they’re used only once a year, you eliminate the risk of having a house overrun with souvenir clutter. Goulet decorates her tree with a small sleigh she bought in Lake Placid, an owl from the Washington Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian and a small lantern from Vermont. Find fabrics: Textiles are easy to transport and can be made into a variety of decor pieces, from pillows to a framed piece of art. B e a r t s y : Souvenirs don’t have to be confined to shelves. They can easily be transformed into wall art. A shell or starfish from your beach vacation can be placed in a shadow box with a piece of burlap as a background and hung on a bathroom wall.
Freshen the filter One last thing everyone should do and your guests and family will appreciate: change your furnace filter. During winter you should replace it every month to improve air circulation, increase your furnace’s efficiency and reduce heating costs. The best holiday season is a safe and healthy one — make that your top priority. Watch Mike Holmes on Holmes Makes It Right on HGTV. For more information visit makeitright.ca.

Trimming a Christmas tree with holiday mementos — like this sleigh designer Lisa Goulet bought in Lake Placid — is a way to bring that vacation vibe back home.
Where you travel back to the prehistoric era. One of the best ways to build a community is to make it world-class: in Harbour Landing, we take a lot of pride in creating imaginative playgrounds and parks. Like the dinosaur rope course in Fairchild Park where children are free to run through dinosaur bones, or dig and discover their own prehistoric adventure. Above all, it’s a place you call home.

Style with a story MELISSA RAYWORTH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Designers often surprise their clients by sharing a secret: You can dramatically change the look of a room simply by changing or rearranging the items on your bookshelves and tabletops. Just as fashion accessories can have a big impact on an outfit, the items you display on shelves and tables can have a powerful effect on the style of any room. Yet we often pay little attention to these areas. Take shelves; they often get cluttered with stuff we’ve received as gifts or things we’re not sure where to store. Think about “how the items you’re displaying will continue the story you’re trying to tell in your space,” advises designer Brian Patrick Flynn, founder of the Flynnside Out design blog. A little editing of your collection can help banish clutter, and putting different items in the spotlight can reveal fresh combinations of things you already own. Begin by exploring photos of bookshelves and tables on Pinterest, or other websites or magazines, suggests interior designer Betsy Burnham of Burnham Design. You may find you’re more drawn to sparse, streamlined surfaces than you’d expected. Or you may love the look of surfaces decorated with items in one colour scheme. Once you’ve got some ideas bubbling, it’s time to dive in.
paring down from time to time is necessary. Luetkemeyer agrees: “You can’t use what you have if you can’t see what you have,” she says. “So you kind of have to be merciless.” If it’s hard to eliminate anything, invite a friend to help. And if getting rid of things permanently is tough, simply store items that aren’t working and put them away for a few months. Or loan them to a friend.
Clear, Then Classify
Look Inside
First, empty all the shelves and tables from one or several rooms of your home. Place all the items on the floor or perhaps on an empty dining table. Begin grouping them however you wish: by colour, texture, type of object or any other classification. Look for patterns. You might find, for example, that you have several items relating to animals, or more pieces of brass or stone than you realized, says designer Molly Luetkemeyer of M. Design Interiors. Eliminate things that aren’t your taste anymore or don’t fit the room. We tend to add to our shelves and tables over time, Burnham says, so
Before putting anything back on the shelves, consider painting a bookshelf ’s interior, or covering the wall behind an open bookshelf with wallpaper or another wall covering. “The back panels of builtins and bookshelves act just like backdrops to a TV set or a stage,” says Flynn. “I usually paint the back panels the same colours as a room’s walls, or I use wallpaper or grasscloth to introduce texture and create visual tension between the graphic shapes of books, picture frames and objects.” Once you’ve prepared that canvas, it’s time to begin putting stuff back.
POTTERY BARN
‘One of the most interesting ways to define space on a coffee table or sideboard is using trays, says interior designer Betsy Burnham.
Country Living… City Comfort M. DESIGN INTERIORS, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Designed by Molly Luetkemeyer, the bookcase features a painted interior that provides a striking backdrop for a collection of books displayed both vertically and horizontally.
Mix and Match Also think about shape and height. And don’t be afraid to mix art objects with books, or decorative boxes with vases of flowers. “For every stack of books I add to a shelf,” Flynn says, “I like to have at least two interesting objects to offset the linearity.” All three designers suggest varying the orientation of your books’ spines. “I like to stack some vertically and anchor them with book ends or objects,” Flynn says, “and then I stack some horizontally and use them as risers to showcase frames or trinkets, kind of like makeshift pedestals.” Burnham suggests gathering smaller items in decorative trays or bowls. “One of the most interesting ways to define space on a coffee table or sideboard is using trays,” she says. To bring style to a coffee table, stack several books on a large decorative tray, then “have a smaller tray where you put your TV remotes. You’re making the mundane stuff orderly, you’re giving it some form, and you’re actually corralling it and making sense of it.”
