Home style trends follow fashion Retail sector has to know what’s hot

regional differences. Quebec shoppers are more likely than western Canadians to fully embrace European influences, he says. Climate, too, is a factor. Take colour, for example. “This year’s softer palette does not hold up in a region where the ground is covered by white much of the year. So colours have to be somewhat bolder here,” explains Templeton. Iconic shapes and images are always changing, he says. “In past years it was mushrooms that appeared on everything, and before that cupcakes were popular. Today, it’s the stag, or anything with antlers.” How can you avoid the costly pitfalls of following trends too closely? The key is to aim for a timeless style, says Templeton. And avoid big-ticket items that appear trendy. Update your look with smaller accessories that can be swapped out when the trend is over.

CHRIS STANDRING POSTMEDIA NEWS Who decides the next big thing in home decor? Are trends spontaneous or is there a boardroom full of style arbiters calling the shots? The answer is yes and no. When it comes to colour, an international non-profit trade organization known as the Colour Marketing Group gathers annually to choose the colour palette for everything we buy, from cars to clothing. Pantone, developer of an international system of standardizing colour, further narrows the spectrum by selecting a single colour of the year. This year it’s radiant orchid. Last year, it was emerald green and before that tangerine tango. Trends in home decor generally follow what’s happening in fashion, says Jason Templeton, chief merchandising manager for fashion retailer Simons. He leads a team of buyers who shop the big trade shows of Europe. “(Spotting a trend) begins with one sighting, then another, and almost without

realizing it, an item or trend enters your consciousness,” says Templeton. A trend can start simply as an idea executed by someone in the public eye. Others copy it and a pattern emerges.

Forecasters watch for these patterns. Every retail sector has professional trendspotters who combine an eye for design with knowledge of social science and economics to spot the next big thing.

Timing is everything. If they’re right, they can make a lot of money. If they’re wrong, or too late, they can end up with a warehouse full of unmovable merchandise. So ultimately it’s the con-

JURA KONCIUS THE WASHINGTON POST

wicker CONTINUED FROM F1

3. Books placed merely as decorative objects. 4. Posters with inspirational messages like “Stay calm and carry on!”

5. TV nooks or alcoves. 6. Track lighting. 7. Drooping swags as window treatments. 8. Puddling curtains. Already gone and (mostly) forgotten

1. Fake plants on top of kitchen cabinets.

Just about everyone collects something: matchbooks, sand dollars, George Washington-themed memorabilia or maiolica. In Collected: Living With the Things You Love, Fritz Karch and Rebecca Robertson present 250 wide-ranging collections, showing how they can become part of a home’s decor. The authors, both veterans of Martha Stewart Living, know how to make artfully arranged groups of sometimes ordinary objects reflect a collector’s style. The book has a chapter for each of 15 collecting personalities they have identified, from Modestist to Fantasist. I spoke with Robertson about the collections they have uncovered and asked her for advice on collecting and display:

Q How do you begin a collection? A It’s really about following what

2. Wicker furniture for interiors. 3. Ornamental bottles filled with pickled fruit or vegetables. 4. Fake brick on anything. 5. Wallpaper borders used in place of chair rails or crown mouldings.

Will they last?

1. Granite countertops. 2. Glass tiles. 3. Stainless steel appliances.

you are drawn to and trusting yourself and embracing it. Often people start collecting when something is given to them by a family member or they find something on a trip. It can be something that gives an emotional connection. When you decide to collect something, do a little research. Maybe that one special object is tempting you to decide whether to collect more. Hop on the Internet or grab a great book at the library and do a touch of research on the item. Then you can be an informed buyer.

Q How can you incorporate a collection in your home?

A Collect the things you love and

that make you happy. I like to think of these treasures as the jewelry in the room. It’s like putting that finishing touch on an outfit. The sparkle and importance of a collection can make a room.

Overused colour combos

1. Burgundy and hunter green. 2. Dusty rose and blue-grey.

Q How do you display collections in a small space?

A Concentrate on smaller objects

1. Shag carpet, now with deeper pile and used just as area rugs. 2. Wallpaper once everywhere, now chic on a single feature wall. 3. Sheers, once billowing with pinch-pleats, now simply hung with

Q How did you come up with the 15 categories in the book?

A We sat down and thought about

ourselves and all of the people that we know and have met and what they collect.

Q What are the most unusual collections you found?

A Probably the strangest was the

tea-bag collector who has 30,000 used tea bags in the Modest-ist chapter. It’s so unexpected. We also have someone who collects crocheted foodstuffs, from hotdogs to cupcakes, in the Artificialist chapter.

Q What category are you? A I am definitely a Containerist.

I love any kind of boxes. I have a silver-box collection. I am drawn to anything that can contain something.

Q What else do you collect? A I collect vintage magazines,

purses (and) mother-of-pearl souvenirs, and I collect and sell vintage glassware and barware. Like many collectors, I found a retail outlet for my obsessions. If you are a smart collector, you will swap in and trade out. There are so many ways to do that now; you don’t have to have a physical shop. Fritz and I have a new Etsy shop called Collected and Company. We are going to organize it to reflect the 15 chapters, or personalities, in the book.

Fuel-burning appliances raise CO risks MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

Winter is the most dangerous season for carbon monoxide (CO). Doing what we can to prevent CO leaks, poisoning or explosions can mean the difference between life and death. During winter we spend more time indoors and use more fuel-burning appliances. Not to mention bad weather can knock out power lines, and that can lead to plenty of people using heat sources they’ve never used before or know how to use properly. We’ve all heard the stories: The power goes out; a family doesn’t have heat for days. Out of desperation, they decide to bring in a fuel-burning heater. Next thing you know they’re a headline. Do not let it happen this winter. We can prevent these kinds of accidents. No. 1. Make sure CO alar ms or detectors are working. A colourless, odourless gas, CO is produced any time you burn fuel, such as gasoline, wood, oil or propane. It’s a silent and invis-

THE HOLMES GROUP

Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home. Any appliance that burns fuel must be checked annually. You should also have your water heater and venting checked. Blocked venting is a serious problem and needs to be fixed immediately.

Also, if the venting in your home is too strong — maybe the kitchen or bathroom fans are too powerful — it can pull toxic fumes, including CO, back indoors. Remember, air expelled

from your home needs to be replaced. If too much is exhausted, negative pressure is created inside and that’s when exhaust fumes can be drawn back in. No. 3. Have an HVAC professional check your home’s heating system every year, no exception. Make sure there’s nothing — like furniture — blocking the air intakes and cold air returns, otherwise the system will suffocate. No. 4. Have a certified home inspector check that your garage is properly sealed from the rest of the house to ensure there’s no way CO from vehicles or generators can seep into your home — including the bedrooms. No. 5. Be smart when using space heaters. For example, don’t use them in wet areas or to dry anything, and never use a fuel-burning space heater inside. If you’re freezing, add a few more layers or go to a relative or friend’s home. Believe me, you’re better off coping with the cold than CO.

Gone are the days of enveloping a room in flowery paper resembling a field of wildflowers. Today’s wallpapers are bold and in large geometric patterns that draw attention to an accent wall. But with a range of patterns, colours and textiles available, choosing the right wallpaper isn’t always a breeze. Cindy Desjardins, an Ottawa interior decorator, offers her tips on choosing the right paper. What kind? There are lots of different types of wallpaper to consider. Vinyl is the most versatile and durable, offering the widest range of colours and patterns. It resists tearing and is easy to clean, making it a good choice for well-used areas such as a family room or child’s bedroom. Vinyl comes in self-sticking for an easy do-it-yourself project (simply peel off the backing and fix to the wall); pre-pasted, which requires wetting the paper before hanging; or non-pasted, which means applying paste to the back of the paper before hanging. More delicate papers include flocked, grasscloth and foil. Flocked wallpaper was originally designed to imitate velvet and textile wall coverings and has a luxurious look and feel. Grasscloth wallpaper is made of a natural fibre and is an environmentally friendly way to add warmth and character. Foil wallpaper is made of a thin sheet of metallic foil attached to a paper backing. It can create a dramatic look.

ible killer, like radon. Only a working CO alarm can indicate if this gas is in your home. One alarm should be on every level of your home and near sleeping areas. Some units are plugged into the wall: Do not unplug them. Others are smoke and CO combo units, either placed on the ceiling or hardwired into your electrical system. These should be installed by a licensed electrical contractor. Whatever unit you have should be tested at least once a month (follow the manufacturer’s instructions). Every CO alarm has a test button that, when pressed, emits a loud beep. If you don’t hear it, change the batteries and test again. Routinely change batteries in CO alarms the same time you change those in smoke alarms — at least twice a year when you change clocks. It’s good timing because it forces you to check the device at the start and end of winter season — a crucial time for CO safety. If you haven’t changed the batteries, do so now! Typically, CO alarms need to be replaced between seven and 10 years. No. 2. Have a certified technician check out every fuel-burning appliance in your home, including your fireplace, gas stove and furnace — whether it’s woodburning, oil, gas or propane.

TECHNOLOGY

Whirlpool in a marketing muddle DREW HARWELL THE WASHINGTON POST Whirlpool’s $1,699 “smart” washing machine boasts Wi-Fi and a coloured control screen, can be started from an iPhone app, and will text or email you when your clothes are ready to dry. But if you’re wondering who would want to buy an Internet-enabled washing machine, you’re not alone. Even Whirlpool’s not so sure. “We’re a little bit of a hammer looking for a nail right now,” Chris Quatrochi, Whirlpool’s global director of user experience and connectivity, said last week at a conference hosted by tech blog Gigaom. The buyers of web-connected washers, more than a year after launch, are still “not at all widespread,” he said. “Trying to understand exactly the value proposition that you provide to the consumer,” he said, “has been a little bit of a challenge.” It’s a big concession from one of the most notable champions of the buzzy “Internet of Things,” in which even our humblest household devices gain web-enabled powers of their own. At a consumer electronics Expo in January, Whirlpool said its “kitchen of 2020” would be piled high with not-exactly-necessary whirligigs: stovetops that display

WHIRLPOOL

Whirlpool’s $1,699 ‘smart’ washing machine connects via Wi-Fi and can be stopped or started remotely. the weather, Facebook photos and Pinterest recipes; music-playing refrigerators; oven burners that flame up via voice command. In the kitchen of 2014, though? No one seems to be beating down the doors for a web-connected home laundromat. Whirlpool, the world’s largest appliance maker and

builder of nearly two million washers and dryers in North America every year, would not share sales numbers for its “smart” appliances. But its companion iPhone app, WashSquad, hasn’t exactly blown anyone away. The app, which also lets users assign laundry chores to family members and gives tips on erasing stains, has in

the last year been reviewed only 21 times. It peaked at No. 243 in the iOS store’s Lifestyle category late last year, fell below 1,500th in January and hasn’t resurfaced since, according to data from App Annie, an app-market research firm. Few expected “smart” machines would fly off the shelves. They’re expensive,

and Americans don’t typically replace their washers and dryers all that often. But analysts say the problem is bigger than that. Today’s smartest washer and dryer set won’t fold your clothes, erase wrinkles or stop you from mixing reds and whites. It won’t even move a load from one machine to the other. So what’s

the point? Or, as Digital Trends blogger John Sciacca put it: “Have we gotten so pathetically lame that you need to be notified by an email that your laundry is done?” The machines could get smarter over time. In less than 10 years, said Whirlpool executive Quatrochi, your washer and dryer will be able to prod you about chores (“Did you want to add this to your laundry list?”) while also tapping into your calendar to remind you how late you are. But there are those who, in a world rampant with distractions, still admire appliances’ blessed simplicity. “Will I not be able to do my laundry on a Friday night,” Gigaom executive editor Tom Krazit said, “if I don’t download this software update first?” Connecting the web with the creature comforts of domestic life and suburbia remains one of the biggest intrigues for consumer giants wanting to jump on the next big thing. New lines of “smart” appliances, from lawn sprinklers to dishwashers, have blossomed in the months since. But even their biggest supporters see how far they still have to grow before they win over the mainstream. “If I could actually (build) a connected solution that folded the clothes,” Quatrochi said, “we could all retire.”
