Turn pallets from trash into treasure Repurposing discarded structures JENNIFER FORKER THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Here’s a little secret about building furniture out of pallets, those simple wooden structures used to shlep goods: not all pallet wood is cheap, rough-cut pine. Sharp-eyed scroungers can find oak, hickory or even cherry pallets, since hardwoods are needed to transport heavy goods. Finding one of those is like hitting the jackpot for do-it-yourself pallet-furniture aficionados. “The first time I found a hardwood, it was hickory, and I was giddy,” says Becky Lamb, of Bozeman, Mont. “And I made a bench out of that one.” An online slide show by Country Living magazine features 17 pallet projects, including a headboard, garden frame, daybed, wine rack and artworks. More projects — including guitars — and how-to tutorials can be found on the website 1001 Pallets. “I’ve seen people do some amazing things reclaiming the wood,” including panelling a wall or ceiling, says Jami Supsic, style director at Country Living. She says there are two ways to approach DIY pallet furniture: Use the pallet intact, as the foundation for a coffee table or sofa, or take it apart and use the slats. One of the most stunning creations she has seen, she says, was a chandelier hanging from ropes in a party tent: It was made from a pallet hung with battery-operat-

Crafting with Wood Pallets ed tea lights in mason jars. Beginners might want to start with a daybed or console, for which the pallet could be kept mostly intact, or a simple art project such as a front-door wreath, she says. You can find wood pallets behind businesses such as flooring and plumbing-supply stores, or the local newspaper, says Lamb in her new book, Crafting with Wood Pallets (Ulysses Press). Ask if they’re free for the taking. Or find free pallets on Craigslist.com. Not all pallets will make good furniture. Each needs to be inspected. Steer clear of those that appear to have a chemical or oil residue,

says Lamb. Choose pallets that have mostly usable boards, without cracks or splits. Look for an IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) label or the HT (heat-treated) stamp on the pallet. As for tools, Lamb suggests starting with a hammer, saw, drill and sander. A reciprocating saw helps disassemble pallets faster. She can take apart five pallets in 30 or 40 minutes with her Sawzall, she says, and explains how in her book. You can tear pallets apart with only a hammer and crow bar, but it takes a lot longer. Dimitri Boulze of Toulouse, France, who launched 1001 Pallets two years ago with a friend, thinks pallet furniture has become popular because it combines recycling and creativity. And it’s cheap. “On one side, people are realizing that resources are finite and that recycling can help with saving things and money,” says Boulze. “And then it gives them a goal to create something, and it’s something very positive.”

Make it right
Winter best time to test your home for radon In some cases it can take years before you start to see the damaging effects of radon. That’s why everybody must get their home tested, no exception. (That includes 24 Sussex Dr.) It’s the only way to know if your house has a radon problem. Studies on radon show that different regions across the country have different radon levels, but what they also tell us is that there is no way to predict if a house has a radon problem or not — one house might have normal levels while the house next door has levels through the roof. I’ve seen it happen. The only way to know for sure is to test for it. All homes have some radon in them, but the amount of radon they accumulate depends on a few different factors. The first one is soil. Not only do uranium levels vary across the country, but also the way radon flows through different types of soils varies, too. For example, it can be easier for this radioactive gas to move through sand than clay. The construction of the house and its foundation play a big role, too. If the foundation has plenty of cracks and openings, it provides more entry points for radon. Things like using exhaust fans, the fireplace and opening windows can affect the pressure inside the house, which can actually pull radon inside. Right now about seven per cent of Canadians are living in homes
MIKE HOLMES Make it Right
November is Radon Action Month — a time to remind everyone how important it is to get your home tested. First, what is radon? Radon comes from uranium in the ground. When it breaks down, it produces a radioactive gas called radon. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it, but it’s there and it’s always been there. The problem is when radon gets trapped inside a house or a building — that’s when it can accumulate and become dangerous. It can come in through cracks and openings in your foundation, your windows, loose pipe-fittings, floor drains or the sump in the basement — even a home’s water could contain radon. Breathing in radon over an extended period of time is a serious risk to your health because these tiny radioactive particles can get into your lungs, and when they release energy, they can damage lung cells. That’s when you start to run into problems. Every year, more than 3,000 Canadians die from lung cancer
Alex Schuldtz/The Holmes Group
November is Radon Action Month. Mike Holmes urges all Canadians to test their home for radon, which can be lethal. caused by radon. Not too many people know this, but radon is actually the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers — the second leading cause of lung cancer overall.
And if you’re a smoker and you live in a house with elevated radon levels (above the current guideline of 200 Bq/m3), your chances of developing lung cancer is one in three. I don’t like those odds.
with unsafe radon levels — don’t be one of them. Protect your family and get your home tested. The good news is if you have high radon levels, you can fix the problem, and it’s a relatively straightforward fix. You can purchase a long-term radon test kit (long-term testing provides better readings than short-term testing) but I’d recommend getting a professional home inspector to come in and do the testing for you. Just make sure they’re certified by the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP). Testing can be tricky. For example, radon detectors must be placed a certain distance away from interior walls, exterior walls, below the ceiling and above the ground. Do it the wrong way and you can screw up the results. That’s why you’re better off getting a pro to do it for you. The best time to test for radon is over the winter because we don’t open our windows and doors as much, which allows for radon levels to build up and provide more accurate readings. Don’t put it off. We’re going to be spending more time indoors. Make sure the environment inside your home is safe for you and your family. That’s top priority. Turn an oversized foyer into a functional family space Jeffrey Fisher National Post
Q: My husband, two teens and I recently moved into a four-bedroom home in the suburbs. The house is a new-build and has everything we were looking for — and unfortunately something we weren’t: a large foyer that measures approximately 15 feet wide by 20 feet long. As soon as we open the front door, it’s like walking into a room that has no actual function. We have a large open-concept kitchen, dining room and great room plus a separate den, so the space is baffling to us. I’ve put a 36-inch centre-hall table in there but it looks small and ridiculous. I know most people would love to have a large entry, but this takes it to an entirely other level. A: Your large entry foyer definitely sounds like a case of “be careful what you wish for.” You’ve probably lived in houses or condos previously where you wished the entry was just a bit bigger (I

certainly have) and now that you have it, what do you do with it? And, as you write, this is not just a foyer, it’s the size of a real room. I have a few ideas for you and I hope at least one resonates with you so that finally you view this space as desirable as opposed to a waste: Treat your enor mous entrance as a games room. I realize this is not for everyone (and you don’t mention your personal decor style), but consider putting a pool table or Ping-Pong table in your foyer and being crowned the coolest parents on the block. If there’s space and desire, add a dartboard or a table that always has a puzzle on the go. By making your entrance the area for family-and-friends fun, you transform it into a space that has a definite purpose separate from the other areas of your home. Formal living area. On the opposite end of the decor spectrum, an oversized foyer provides space for formal furnishings that you may not have been able to work into your great room. I decorated the room in the photo above with this intention.
collect and add overtime. Add a bench or two to hit home the authenticity of an art gallery. Library. Have you considered lining the walls of your foyer with bookshelves and creating a library in your entrance? If your books need a visual boost, cover them with cream or coloured paper for a uniform look. They key to the success of your oversized foyer, Jacqueline, is allowing yourself to think of the space in a different way. Good luck and send me a photo when you’re finished. A large entry can be used as a comfortable gathering space for guests, or as a library, an art gallery or even a games room.

The symmetry of the furnishings, potted trees and oversized mirrors (there are two) bring a classical element to an otherwise relaxed home. I chose wide-stripe wallpaper from Farrow Ball to visually contain the furnishings in this large foyer, helping to make it an elegant space for more formal gatherings. Your dwarfed centre-hall table should work well in this scenario with the addition of other furniture. Art gallery. If I had an oversized foyer in my home that left me baffled, I would treat the space as an art gallery and hang paintings and photography on the wall. Well-designed path the backbone of a garden STEVE WHYSALL VANCOUVER VER SUN V There are few features as important or intrinsic to the success of a garden as a well-designed, well-routed, well-built path. It needs to do more than simply guide and deliver you from one location to another — a path also needs to be attractive and inviting. At its best, it will have the quality of being able to take you on a journey of discovery. In Garden Design, A Book of Ideas, Heidi Howcroft and Marianne Majerus offer another definition: “Paths are far more than a route between two places; they are the backbone of the garden and can also be a major design feature.” There is no doubt, they say, that a well-designed network of paths gives structure to a garden and sets the tone of the overall design. The simplest, and one of the most elegant, paths is one you will see at two of the world’s most famous English gardens, Sissinghurst and Great Dixter: a path created by simply mowing a way through a grassy meadow or wood. No paving, no bricks, no concrete slabs or slate stepping-stones. Just a way to go. And it always strikes the eye as very charming. You will find variations on this theme. One of them is a path — more of a guideline
really — created by setting worn house bricks on end, no more than three bricks wide, to make a line along the ground, pointing the way ahead. It is does the job astonishingly well. The zigzagging Japanese plank path, which can also be raised as a bridge, is also a very attractive way of providing a pleasant route back and forth, to and from. These are perfect, of course, for making a way across wet or boggy ground or a stream, but I have seen this design used through flower beds densely planted with alliums. Gorgeous. Many gardeners think paths must curve or bend to create interest. However, not everyone likes a garden path that curves just to be cute. Some designers think every path should head straight to where you are going, take the shortest distance between point A and point B and not waste people’s time meandering merely for the sake of meandering. Victorian gardener Shirley Hibberd, for example, observed: “Then we have winding paths, to make butcher-boys giddy and perplex the stranger ... and which compel the visitor to make half a tour of the grounds, when his chief object is to get inside the house, to take off his hat and gloves, and sit at the

The path surface can be made of a variety of materials. table punctual to a moment. Depend upon it, the best taste for an approach to a house is to have it as direct as possible.” While straight lines in garden design tended to be abandoned in favour of curves from about the mid-18th century, the twisting path has always had its critics. Sir Reginald Blomfield, author of The Formal Garden in England, once accused the typical landscape
gardener of deliberately “planting trees and bushes in the way to give him an opportunity of winding his path and then taking credit himself for subordinating his paths to nature.” Straight or curved, most of the world’s top garden designers recognize the importance of a path to not only give a garden structural definition but, more importantly, transport visitors in a relaxed way through a series

of pleasant green spaces. Ru s s e l l Pa g e, i n T h e Education of a Gardener, stressed that paths are allimportant in clarifying the lines of communication between house and garden. “Paths indicate the structure of a garden plan, and the stronger and simpler the lines they follow the better. “They help define the organic shape of your garden: an indecisive arrangement of paths will make an amorphous and weak garden, a basic error which even the most skilful planting will never be able to put right.” Late great British garden guru Rosemary Verey thought paths set the atmo-
sphere and style of a garden. “Paths, allies and walks dictate the way you wish to move around your garden. They are the skeleton of the garden. “They frame beds into manageable sizes and divide the garden into different areas, leading you from one section to the next, through g ates, under archways, around corners and along vistas.” In his comprehensive look at the function and form of paths and walkways, Garden Paths: Inspiring Designs and Practical Projects, American designer Gordon Hayward says, “The welldesigned path is irresistible. It invites, even pulls people into the garden. “Put a curve in a path that disappears around a corner and visitors will yearn to know what is around the corner. “Then let that path lead to other thoughtfully designed paths throughout your property and your garden will become coherent while simultaneously offering intrigue, surprise, movement, variety and ever-changing perspectives.” Flagstones make great paths, lined up in a row with grass or gravel or sand separating them. G r ave l , a s l o n g a s it doesn’t shift around too much, makes a great path and also adds a nice crunchy sound when walked on.

OWNERSHIP
MEGAN COLE/ E TThe Canadian Press E/
A roof is one of the most important features of a house, and one of the most expensive, which is why homeowners should try to prolong the life of their roof with regular maintenance.
Budgets, maintenance turn house into a home Responsibilies abound for homeowners RYAN GARNER EDMONTON JOURNAL The sale is complete, movein date was a success and furniture is in place. Now what? For many homeowners the hard work begins after the house has become a home — adjusting to mortgage payments, operating costs and ongoing maintenance. However, knowledge is power and a little preparation can go a long way. Following these four steps can keep your new dream home from turning into a nightmare.
MERLE E PROSOFSKY
Homeowners — both first-time and longtime — can benefit from balancing their expectations and budgets well and be prepared in case of emergency.
Make your mortgage payments promptly Whether you decided to make mortgage payments weekly, biweekly or monthly, make sure to pay on time to avoid delinquency, which can have adverse long-term effects. Delinquency could result in late charges or negatively affect your credit rating, and failing to make payments completely can result in serious consequences like foreclosure. Setting up automatic deductions from your bank account is the best way to prevent late or missed payments. Finance experts also recommended keeping at least three months’ worth
of mortgage payments in savings for emergency situations. If you have trouble making payments, discuss the situation with your lender or a financial professional before it spirals out of control.
Budget properly and live within your means Home ownership includes a number of hidden costs, including property taxes and insurance, as well as maintenance and repair costs. Additional costs can include home security systems, snow removal or gardening. Make sure you
budget accordingly. Identifying all of the costs associated with a home can help reduce stress and prevent surprises. Sticking to your budget can provide peace of mind that money can’t buy. Part of that involves living within your means, and avoiding costly home renovations or upgrades until you’re on solid financial ground. Adding a Jacuzzi to the master bathroom or backyard deck might be appealing, but overextending yourself and bursting your budget could cause headaches down the road.
by appointment 34 Motherwell Drive Ti Trithart Tim Tr (306)
Set money aside for emergencies Whether you do it yourself or bring in an expert, repairs are a costly side effect of home ownership. As your home ages, major repairs or replacements to the siding, windows or rooftops are an unfortunate reality. Rely on an expert to help identify problem areas. Knowing about repairs or replacements in advance can help you prepare for them and budget appropriately. However, many home repairs are unexpected, and the costs associated with them can put a sizable dent in your
wallet. Establish an emergency fund to deal with unexpected issues ranging from home or car repairs to illness and job loss. Setting aside five per cent of your monthly earnings in a special account can bail you out when unexpected problems pop up.
Conduct regular home maintenance Maintenance and renovations are just part of the homeowner package. Learn about your home’s basic components and operating systems (heat, water, electricity, etc.) and identify actions you have to take to ad-
just them or shut them off in an emergency. As the old saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and failure to do so can have serious ramifications. Conduct home inspections regularly, and replace or repair items that are worn out. Maintenance can range from simple tasks (replacing smoke detector batteries, cleaning out gutters, lubricating door hinges) to major projects (replacing water heater, patching up an aging roof, chimney cleaning), so educate yourself and keep home maintenance in mind.

Creativity comes out in the tiles Design element sees resurgence Katherine Roth The Associated Press Tile was an important element in interior design in many parts of the world for thousands of years, coveted for its esthetic possibilities, functionality and longevity. Yet for a generation, the craft has been largely unexplored, relegated mainly to bathrooms and rooftops, say the authors of a new book. “It’s been untapped and underappreciated, but that’s changing very quickly,” says Catherine Bailey, who, with her husband, Robin Petravic, owns California-based Heath Ceramics. The couple won a 2015 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for their work encouraging creativity at Heath while remaining true to the company’s 67-year history. They have written Tile Makes the Room: Good Design from Heath Ceramics (released last month by Ten Speed Press). The book is full of lush photos and practical advice about incorporating artisanal tile in interiors. The goal is to make designing with tile accessible to the uninitiated. Heath and other small ceramics studios are leading a resurgence of tile in home design. An expanded range of colours, textures, patterns — and prices — have made the medium more adaptable and accessible. Feras Irikat, design and marketing director for Lunada Bay Tile, a Los Angeles-based firm offering Japanese-inspired tiles, including some made with recycled glass, said, “Before the ’70s, tile was everywhere, like permanent jewelry for your home. It slowed down a lot after that and became very boring. But it has started catching on again, and there are more and more small companies putting their hearts and souls into it and doing really interesting things.” Bailey says “a lot of designers are finally rediscovering the incredible depth and range” tile offers. She and Petravic took over the Sausalito, Calif.based Heath Ceramics in 2003. The company, founded in 1948, was famous for tableware and tiles, and kept a close link between craft and

Tile Makes the Room begins by looking at the couple’s 1890s Sausalito home, and Heath’s factories in Sausalito and San Francisco. “We don’t think of Heath as making tile so much as making objects that contribute to something bigger, like architecture or interiors,” they write. Tile, when combined with textile, wood and glass, can create a sense of permanence, timelessness, colour and texture, and contribute to a cohesive overall design, they say. The book includes many kinds of tiles and architectural styles in interiors and a few exteriors. In chef Alice Waters’ Berkeley, Calif., kitchen, for instance, earthy green tiles surround a beast of a gas range, framing the copper pots and teakettle and providing a warm backdrop for a concrete counter. In a small Tokyo home, handmade tile from Fez, Morocco, set in a striking her ringbone patter n in blue-and-white flooring, gives the feeling of rippling water meandering peace-

A Heath design featuring cubes in greyblues and reds adds depth and character to a study wall, and in a garden in Sao Paulo, Brazil, graphic tiles with an undulating design in blue and white (designed by the Athos Bulcao Foundation) add a fluid, modernist touch. Even in all-white rooms, varying types of tile bring
a sense of timelessness and depth. “The study of white tiles ... acts as a canvas for the material’s qualities,” the authors write. The book ends by explaining the process of tile making. It considers the main types of ceramic tile: earthenware, porcelain and stoneware. There are also concrete tiles. The reader is taken through the process of forming, finishing, firing and, finally, installing tiles to maximum effect.

Paint revival for faded hardwood floors Easy colour injections for tired spaces
Bold floor, neutral walls
Melissa Rayworth The Associated Press Worn and faded hardwood floors can drag down the look of a room. But having scuffed floors sanded down and re-stained can be expensive and messy. One alter native that’s gaining popularity: painting older hardwood floors. You can add solid colour, stripes, or any imaginable stencilled or hand-drawn patterns to a floor. There’s actually a long tradition of painted wooden floors in American homes, says Tom Silva, general contractor on the long-running PBS television series This Old House. One hundred years ago, paint was considered a practical way to protect floors and add some beauty in the process. In a survey done this month of more than 1,200 users on the home-improvement website Houzz.com, 15 per cent said they’re ready to make the leap to painting while 85 per cent were still more comfortable with stained wood floors. But Houzz editor Sheila Schmitz says some of the site’s members who have embraced painted floors have done so with real creativity. “We’ve seen homeowners reinvent their floors with glossy white paint, oversized stripes, checkerboards with alternating natural and painted finishes, and even more fanciful shapes,” Schmitz says. It’s a DIY project that requires effort but little experience. So how do you do it, and what are some of the boldest, most interesting approaches you can take?

A rich red paint on the hardwood floor brings warmth and colour to this stylish, gender-neutral nursery.
Interior designer Camila Pavone was ahead of the trend in painting her kitchen floor in 2010. The room previously had green walls and a stained wood floor. Pavone switched the walls to a creamy white (she used Martha Stewart’s Glass of Milk) and covered the wood floor with jade green paint. She considered using marine paint but chose a formula called Break-Through!, which dries quickly and creates a harder surface than many other types of paint. Five years later, Pavone is still thrilled with the result. The floors “always get a ‘wow’ when new people come to my house,” she says. “The only thing I didn’t take into account was the wear and tear of two dogs and now two kids. The claws on the dogs do scratch the floors up a bit. But I try to pretend that if I saw that in a store display in Anthropologie, I would think it was fabulous. So I don’t stress.” Because the kitchen is a high-traffic area, Pavone has repainted the floors once every two years to keep them looking shiny and scratchfree. But that work is relatively easy. “It’s a really fast project and normally only takes around two hours,” she says. “I would totally do it again!”

Primer isn’t required if the floor already has some finish on it. But putting down a few thin, clear coats of primer can make it easier if you decide
years from now to remove the paint. If you do prime the floor, use sandpaper to lightly scuff that clear coat after it dries to help subsequent painted coats adhere well.
Paint can also be perfect for entryways. Thick stripes, diamond or chevron patterns can make a small foyer seem bigger, drawing attention to an otherwise ignored space. Once the floor is cleaned and prepared, simply lay out your design with painters’ tape. Be careful to measure the width of stripes or the angles of diamonds or chevrons to make sure you’ve laid the tape in the proper places. Consider using large stencils to add a pattern to the floor of a larger space, like an enclosed porch. Or paint a brightly coloured “rug” in the centre of a room by painting a solid rectangle, then adding a pattern once that solid coat is completely dry.
