Sink into the depths of a free-standing tub JACQUELINE LOUIE FOR THE CALGARY HERALD “It’s the look. It’s the very first reason why people pick it,” says interior designer Bridgett Jessop of Debutante Design, a Calgarybased boutique interior design firm that works with several new home builders. “A free-standing tub has an elegance to it. It has that spa feel, that fancy hotel feel. It has a little bit of personality. It can help set the tone or style for your space, based on the shape or colour of your tub. A free-standing bathtub will add a little bit of a feminine flair to an ensuite. It’s usually curvy, which nicely offsets the straight lines of the tile and the architecture of your bathroom.” Adds designer Alykhan Velji, principal of Alykhan Velji Design: “What you’re seeing a lot more now are free-standing bathtubs that are beautiful art pieces in themselves. The shape is very organic and fluid. They’re more rounded or
oval — you’re not seeing large square tubs any more. “With a free-standing tub, you have a lot of different options for your faucets and tub fillers. They can come through the wall or floor, creating a beautiful esthetic in a bathroom, and making it a little more sculptural.” Having a free-standing tub not only creates a lot of visual space in a bathroom, it means you can often fit a tub bigger than a built-in into the same space. “From a practical standpoint, you’re getting more bathtub in the same footprint,” Jessop says. On the functional side, a free-standing tub is easier to clean than a standard built-in tub, she notes, because “you’re not dealing with a whole bunch of grout lines. You’re wiping inside and outside of the surface.” And if there is ever a maintenance problem, trouble spots are more easily accessed when you have a freestanding tub.

make it right
Is it too late to save a shoddy renovation? MIKE HOLMES Make it Right
This morning, my guys went to look at a job they got called in to fix. Unfortunately, it was a situation that was all too familiar. A homeowner hired a contractor to rebuild their home. Everything seemed like it was going to plan. The contractor got permits; he gave them a contract with a payment schedule, tied to specific project milestones (e.g. rough-in, drywall, completed); he even had an inspector come in and check the first stage of the build. But the homeowner started noticing things weren’t quite right. The first clue was the job site was a complete mess, with major safety hazards everywhere — it literally looked like a dumping ground for other builds the contractor had going in the area. Then the exterior siding was removed, leaving the house exposed to the elements all winter long; then finally, the basement flooded. The homeowner called an independent, third-party home inspector (not an inspector that the contractor hired) to come in, take a look and give their unbiased opinion. Their report confirmed the homeowner’s worst nightmare: the contractor botched the build, and it was going to take a lot more time and money to fix it. The big questions here are: Could this situation have been prevented? If so, when? At what point? And is there anything the homeowner can do now? The homeowner can take the contractor to court, but we all know that takes time and money, and in many cases like these, the homeowner doesn’t have much of either.
Alex Schuldtz/The Holmes Group
A contractor left this home exposed to the elements and rodents for more than a year, causing extensive damage and forcing the homeowner to find another contractor. A good renovation and a proper build starts with education. What about insurance? Can it protect you from a bad renovation? Your contractor’s insurance, which should include full liability and Workers’ Compensation insurance, only covers accidents on the job site. (For example, someone falling off the roof or a valuable painting getting damaged.) Extra coverage on your homeowner insurance can protect you against personal and public property damage the renovation causes, such as messing up your neighbour’s home or a broken water main. But if the renovation was just done poorly, you’re the only one stuck holding the bag ... and we all know what’s in the bag. So where did things go wrong?
Where they usually do — at the beginning. A good renovation and a proper build starts with education. It’s the first step, it’s the biggest, and it’s usually the one that most people skip. Learn the basics of what a proper job looks like, what it takes, and what it really costs. The first red flag was the contractor’s quote — it was too low! There was no way anyone could deliver the kind of renovation this homeowner wanted based on the quote this contractor provided, and the homeowner should have known this. How? By getting quotes from other contractors. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. The contractor could either be using cheaper products and materials, or skip-
ping proper installation practices, or all of the above. But you better believe they’re not taking a hit on the costs just to give you a big, big deal. What about the contract? They did it right; they had a payment schedule tied to project milestones. The problem was the contractor rushed through the job and did things wrong just to get paid. Had the homeowner known how the job should have been done in the first place, the proper steps and how materials should have been installed, they could have stopped the contractor before paying him even more money to continue to do a bad job. Another solution is putting in the contract that you’ll get your own professional home inspec-
tor to check the work and verify things are done right, before moving forward to the next phase of construction — because contractors know inspectors, too! In the end, the homeowner fired the contractor. Now my guys have to fix his mistakes on her dime. At the end of the day, it comes down to trust. A contractor must earn it. You don’t just give it away! Do your homework, take your time and learn everything about the job and how to do it right. That way, the second things go wrong you can pull the plug and save on future damages and costs — then hire the right people to make it right. Watch Mike in his new series, Home Free on HGTV. All the right stuff in its right place Elizabeth Mayhew For The Washington Post
Homes by Avi
A free-standing tub creates visual space in a bathroom and you can fit a tub bigger than a built-in into the same space.
Bathtub Prices
have come down Continued from F1 Another plus, Jessop notes, is that when you have a free-standing tub you’re not committed to a bathtub tile that could quickly go out of style. Free-standing tubs have come down in price in the last several years, making them more affordable for more people. “Builders now have free-standing tubs as their standard spec — that’s how popular they are,” Jessop says.
Two-person tub
Another twist on the tub is the two-person bathtub, a style that’s now more affordable than in the
past. And it’s becoming an increasingly popular choice for homeowners. “Fewer people are buying hot tubs because there is so much maintenance that comes along with a hot tub, but they still want that relaxing soak,” Jessop says. “A two-person tub is easy to install, and large enough that two adults can sit in it. It can be a social time, without the expense and maintenance of a hot tub.” Whatever you decide to do to enhance your bathroom, it’s good to remember that a snazzy bathroom could enhance the resale value of your home. As Jessop says: “It’s the kitchen and bathroom that sell the home.”

The other day, I experienced a decorating first. My sister-in-law called asking for some quick styling advice. She recently started a new furniture line and was having the pieces photographed in a real-room setting. But like many people who tackle outfitting a room, she had neglected to consider the importance of accessories. There was no time for me to give her a crash course in Styling 101, so instead we FaceTimed. Phone to phone, she guided me from one side of her room to the other, allowing me to select, move and place books, vases, photos and trinkets on various surfaces. In 30 minutes, we had a bookshelf, dresser, bed and two tables looking photo-shoot ready. A week later, she called to thank me for my help. With before and after photos of the room in hand, she could see the difference strong styling made. Rooms — even the most modern and streamlined — look like generic furniture showrooms without stuff. Well-placed accessories gave her room visual interest and energy.
She asked to schedule our next FaceTime styling session, but instead I insisted that with a few tips she would be able to do it herself. So borrowing from lessons I learned studying art history and from my experience as a magazine editor, stylist and decorator, I sent her the following list of accessories and how to use them.
The stuff
By definition, accessories are non-essentials — throw pillows and blankets, framed pictures, books and objects — but really, they’re what makes a room look lived in. Soft goods, such as pillows and blankets, add warmth while pictures and books add personal notes. And because they’re a room’s most affordable element, you can switch them in and out with the seasons. ■■ Throw pillows. In a practical sense, these are handy on sofas with a deep pitch; use them to prop up your back so you don’t sink in too deep. They also are an excellent way to add punches of colour and pattern to a room. Use a mix of squares, lumbars and bolsters. ■■ Throw blankets. Fold one on the edge of a modern sofa to soften hard edges or pile two on a bench
or stool to add a splash of colour. ■■ Books. Small stacks of varying heights add architecture to coffee tables, side tables or front-hall tables. Pick titles that reflect your interests and hobbies. And don’t be afraid to undress books: removing the glossy covers often reveals bright fabric bindings. Also, when creating tableaus on side tables, bookshelves or a mantle, use books to raise items that are too small or too short. ■■ Vases and objects. Display items that mean something to you, such as decorative bowls that you picked up while travelling, an heirloom box that was handed down to you, or a Popsicle-stick sculpture made by your child. But also pay attention to form. If you choose to display a square box, complement it with a curvy vase. ■■ Framed photos. Pick your favourites, frame them simply and in a similar style (like all silver), and set out a small grouping instead of scattering them throughout the room. ■■ Flowers and plants. Every room needs a living natural element. A houseplant or fresh flowers from the grocery store will do. LIGHTING
EzClipse magnetic shades can help transform any room in the house from drab to fab.
Inventor’s bright idea helps soften glow KAREN TURNER OTTAWA CITIZEN OTTAWA — Kory Keogan could have sat in the dark watching television to avoid the glare of a recessed light above his head, but instead, the fast-thinking troubleshooter did his best MacGyver impersonation and rigged up a diffuser using fishing wire, two magnets and a convex mirror. Fast-forward eight years and his makeshift solution has morphed into EzClipse, an innovative line of magnetic trims and stylish shades for pot lights and older style can lights. “They literally install in seconds and are easy to remove,” says Keogan, 39, demonstrating how the round or square silicone covers and lightweight shades click onto the metal frame
WAYNE W AYNE CUDDINGT CUDDINGTO ON/Ottawa Citizen
Inventor Kory Keogan, right, and his business partner Mike Fleming have developed three lines of EzClipse products to add style and diffuse the glare of recessed lights. of a recessed ceiling light to soften the glow or dress up the bland fixture. “There’s no rewiring required, no changing parts and no mess. And when you leave, you can take it with you.”
Though simple to use and affordable — low-profile covers are priced from $21; drum shades from $45, bringing his novel decor idea to market has not been easy for the Ottawa inventor.
Three heavy-duty magnets hold the EzClipse shades and covers firmly to the metal frames of recessed lights. Despite the fact there’s nothing like the EzClipse available — Keogan did a patent search to rule out any conflicts — convincing investors of the salability of his products was challenging. A common reaction: “We think it’s cool, but we need
someone to think it’s cool before we like it,” he says. Refusing to give up, Keogan tried to get on the popular TV show Dragons’ Den in hopes of convincing one of the affluent venture capitalists on the panel to invest in his company. “I was trying to go down every avenue possible,” he says. When that failed, he submitted his idea to Quirky, a New Yorkbased company that helps inventors develop their ideas by asking the general public for feedback. This time, the response was positive. “It was the justification I needed,” says Keogan, who started his first business at the age of 27 selling boats imported from the United States. That was followed by Tin Can Painting, a company he still owns offering interior and exterior painting services for residential and
commercial properties. Two years ago, Keogan decided to take the EzClipse “to the next level” by partnering with Ottawa businessman Mike Fleming. The company now has three product lines and an ecommerce website through Shopify. Following an appearance at a local home and garden show in March, talks are said to be taking place with a Canadian big-box chain to carry Keogan and Co.’s products and all involved have reached out to interior designers, home builders and lighting associations to expand their market. “It’s taken so long, but what really pushed me was the force to succeed,” Keogan says. “I’ve always wanted to be my own boss.” For more infor mation, visit www.ezclipse.com or call 613-408-5346.

Design Milk all about beautiful things REBECCA KEILLOR FOR THE VANCOUVER VER SUN V
JAME STOCKHORST JAMES
Vancouver’s Vin De Garde, which builds modern wine cellars for global clientele, credits much of their success to receiving ongoing mention from Jaime Derringer on Design Milk. and connections we’ve made over the years with marketing firms. I’d say about 20 per cent comes from us finding things and a lot of times we’re finding them at trade shows or via clicking on something on Pinterest and clicking on something else and going down a path that was unexpected.” Shining a light on new and emerging designers is what makes Derringer happy. “When I see a grad student or young designer and I write about them — and I don’t know that this is directly related to my site or not — but then I see them
the following year and they’ve got better and bigger stuff and then it keeps going and going,” she says. Billy Carpenter, principal at Vin de Garde, which builds moder n wine cellars around the globe, first met Derringer at ICFF in New York in 2010. When she wrote about his Vancouver company on Design Milk, the response was swift. “There was a huge spike in visitors directly from her link to our blog,” Carpenter says. “We tracked how it went and we saw thousands of visitors come in less than a couple of hours.”

Ongoing support for emerging design talent is something that sets Design Milk apart, says Annabel Inganni of Los Angeles design company Wolfum. “What’s been so great about the relationship with Jaime is that she’s so supportive and supports on an ongoing basis,” Inganni says.

Carpenter says he no longer pays for advertising, handles all social media inhouse and says write-ups like Derringer’s, because they are from the heart, are the “cleanest and best way to get the most interest” in their product. Canadian designer Gagan Singh of Gagan Design says being featured on Design Milk led to a spike in social media followers and being featured on other design websites worldwide. Through Design Milk, Singh also learned about the annual A’ Design Award competition and entered last year.

When Jaime Der ring er launched her blog, Design Milk, in 2006 she had no idea it would turn into a site with more than four million social media followers, attracting around a million visitors every month. “I certainly wasn’t setting out to start a design magazine, so to speak, but I guess there was something about the things I was finding and sharing that people really loved and it resonated with them,” she says. “There wasn’t really too many voices on the Internet at that time that were talking casually about design and from a layperson perspective, because that’s what I bring. I bring the customers’ perspective to design.” Derringer’s love of finding and sharing beautiful things, from architecture to art to fashion and products, hasn’t waned, with readership growing by around 15 to 20 per cent every year and her site expanding to include Dog Milk (for dog lovers) and Adorn Milk (launched last February) which sells architectural jewelry. “Eighty per cent of what we (feature) now comes to us,” says Derringer, originally from New Jersey, but now based in California. “From readers that are designers and architects

Decor that’s on the edge KIM COOK THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Muscular. Brawny. Disruptive. They don’t sound like descriptors for home decor, do they? Yet they perfectly describe one of the most interesting new directions in furniture and accessories: Brutalist decor. Brutalist architecture was popularized by Le Corbusier in the 1950s. A departure from the intricate Beaux Arts building style, it was all about spare geometric forms and materials like unfinished concrete, steel and glass. New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art is a Brutalist design by Marcel Breuer. Paul Rudolph designed the Art and Architecture Building at Yale. The style moved into interior decor that also played with abstract for ms and rough textures, adding an earthy colour palette and incorporating other materials such as wood, plaster and marble. Furniture by designers like Paul Evans and Curtis Jere found fans, and the style caught fire during the ’60s and ’70s. There are nice examples on the sets of the movie American Hustle and TV’s Mad Men. So why is Brutalism once again having a moment? “Brutalism is derived from the French word ‘brut,’ or raw, and I think it’s that sense of rawness that design lovers are attracted to today,” ventures Anna Brockaway, co-founder and curator of the online vintage-design marketplace Chairish. “Because of their brawny heaviness, imperfect finishes and rough, uneven dimensions, Brutalist pieces deliver gutsy gravitas to a space.”(www.chairish.com ) Jeni Sandberg, a modern-design dealer and consultant in Ra-
leigh, North Carolina, adds, “Brutalist works make perfect high-impact statement pieces, and collectors are snapping up pieces like wall sculptures and chandeliers.” (www.jenisandberg.com ) And New York designer Daun Curry says, “Design should challenge us, and creating contrast in an environment gives urgency, interest and dimension. “Brutalist design is fascinating because it balances delicacy with harsh materiality.” (www.dauncurry.com ) Curry’s favourite sources include 1st Dibs and Flair Home Collection. The former offers vintage pieces like a 1967 Paul Evans patchwork steel cabinet, and a Lane dresser with a Brutalist sculptured wood mosaic. Flair has a collection of Brutalist objets d’art in various metals and gilded plaster. (www.flairhomecollection.com ) Kelly Wearstler’s Apollo stool is an artful stack of black or white marble circles; her Elliott chair is a sexy mix of curvy bronze and exotic fish leather; and her Array, District and Astral rugs bring Brutalist imagery to the floor. (www. kellywearstler.com ) James Bearden’s blackened steel Skyscraper floor lamp for Studio Van den Akker combines architecture and function. (www.studiovandenakker.com )

The Elliott chair, above, is a sexy mix of curvy bronze and leather. At Arteriors, long a source for Brutalist style, round slabs of forged iron form the industrial-chic Potter lamp. The Payne chandelier is a kinetic arrangement of hand-cut, gold-leafed iron shards, while a copse of welded iron sticks forms the Ecko lamp. Ar mourlike metallic circles and squares form the Ulysses and Monty pendants. (www.arteriors.com ) “I recommend picking one statement-making piece to anchor a space, like a chandelier, credenza, cocktail table or wall sculpture, and then mixing in pieces from other eras and styles,” advises Brockaway, of Chairish. “Also, many Brutalist pieces are dark, so I prefer to balance them with a lighter surrounding palette.” Think powerful yet playful, more Mad Men than Mad Max.
