HOT TIMES SUMMER 2015
Get playful! If you’re looking for a fun and playful experience, Saskatoon is sure to appeal, with an endless array of exciting things to see and do! Festival fun unfolds at a dizzying pace, creating a summer buzzing with excitement. Our city’s passion for festivals began 129 years ago with the Saskatoon EX. Taking place August 4 to 9, this six-day extravaganza of superstar entertainment, midway mania and carnival fare is one of the province’s largest tourism events of the year. New thrills and chills await this year with the addition of the scream-worthy Blitzer roller coaster! Saskatoon’s Pride Festival is a week-long festival that grows in size and stature with every year. The 2015 festival theme, “Live Out Loud,” will be celebrated with can’t-miss events from June 7 to 14. Highlights will include the Mosaic Art and Fashion Show on Thursday, June 11 and the downtown Pride Parade on Saturday, June 13. Generations of Saskatonians have treasured the family memories created at Kinsmen Park. The gorgeous park has been rejuvenated with the new PotashCorp Playland, featuring a sky-high Ferris wheel, colourful animal-themed carousel, a play area with water features and the highly anticipated Canpotex Train – a scale replica of a CP freight train that will take families on an extended ride through Kinsmen Park. Every day in Saskatoon offers a new culinary adventure, whether you’re indulging in gastronomic feasts created by top chefs or grabbing a tasty

as a great social experience. Savour the market’s brilliant colours, spicy scents and incredible edibles. Local producers and artisans are eager to share their passion for local wares!
Connect to our culture Make a cultural connection with Saskatoon by sharing in our local treasures. Creative expression abounds at the Saskatchewan Craft Council Affinity Gallery, which showcases our province’s finest artists. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, fascinating exhibits are planned throughout the summer in the gallery and delightful boutique. Stop by and you may even be able to meet one of the artists! A visit to Saskatoon is a chance to test new ideas and sample other cultures. Our city’s two leading theatrical festivals are sure to capture your imagination. Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan has garnered national acclaim for 30 years for its unique contemporary and traditional productions of Shakespearean plays, staged in large tents on the riverbank. This year, from July 8 to August 23, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan once again breaks with tradition by partnering with Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company to present a bold and modern production of Othello, from a First Nations perspective. Othello performs in repertory with the witty comedy Much Ado About Nothing. The PotashCorp Fringe Theatre and Street Festival is a celebration of artistic freedom, taking place July 30 to August 8. Independent theatre performers from around the world will stage 33 different shows, along with free outdoor entertainment, craft vendors and food stands out on the street. The Saskatoon Farmers’ Market is a food lover’s delight as well
Authentic Saskatoon Saskatoon has so much to offer someone looking for an authentic Saskatchewan experience, including many opportunities to live our history and feel immersed in our diverse cultures. The Western Development Museum will transport you back in time to Saskatoon’s early ‘Boomtown’ days, with the longest indoor main street in Canada. At special events like PionEra, you can lend a helping hand and churn the butter. Stop by the photo studio where you can dress in 1900-period costume and take a souvenir home of your visit. Take a walking tour through Saskatoon’s historic Riversdale district and reflect on our city’s past. The neighbourhood is enjoying a renaissance, with fabulous new eateries, boutiques and entertainment venues. Pop into Collective Coffee for a java fix – this popular spot is a hub for the creative and youthful Riversdale neighbourhood. Experience the beauty of Saskatoon’s gorgeous river valley by exploring the scenic Meewasin Trail, named one of the Top 10 Greatest Hikes in Canada by Reader’s Digest. Walk or bike some (or all) of the 64-km trail, which not only leads to scenic vistas, it’s a pathway to numerous cultural attractions including museums and interpretive sites. At Wanuskewin Heritage Park, walk in the footsteps of our First Nations people and participate in cultural activities dating back 6,000 years. Saskatoon Opera presents Madama Butterfly
The moving story of Madama Butterfly has long been on Saskatoon Opera patrons’ most-requested list! Saskatoon Opera’s long-term artistic vision aims to integrate fresh ideas and insights into its productions, giving audiences a new view of classical opera. The artistic team includes nationally renowned Vancouver-based conductor Leslie Dala; Saskatchewan native and long-time director at the Canadian Opera Company, stage director Marilyn Gronsdal; and lighting/set designer Nicholas Blais, whose splendid designs for Magic Flute won rave reviews. THE BARN PLAYHOUSE Quilters Cheaper by the Dozen The Barn Playhouse celebrates its 25th season by remembering its past. This special season opens with a reprisal of a show from The Barn Playhouse’s sixth season. Filled with lively humour, “Quilters” runs from June 17 to 21 and June 24 to 28. In this tribute to our pioneer ancestors, Sarah is making a legacy quilt to pass onto her daughters. Within each block of the quilt lies their family’s history. Sarah’s daughters take on the task of sharing these engaging, touching, funny and heart-warming stories with the audience. Quilters is dedicated to the memory of our mother, Tina Dyck. Chosen from The Barn Playhouse’s eighth season, Cheaper by the Dozen runs from August 19 to 23 and August 26 to 30. It’s a heart-warming comedy based on the true story of efficiency pioneers, Frank and Lillian Gilbreth. It’s the 1920s
and Frank Gilbreth is all for modernization, except when it comes to his teenaged daughters. He’s determined that his very large family should run as efficiently as his factories. The ensuing antics created among his twelve children are hilarious! Cheaper by the Dozen is dedicated to the memory of our father, Peter Dyck. The Barn Playhouse opens Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 5:30 p.m. with food booths, live music, horsedrawn wagon rides and the Craft Barn. Show time is 7:30 p.m. On Sundays, the yard opens at 12 noon with the food booths and other activities; show time is 2 p.m. The Barn Playhouse is located 25 km north of Saskatoon on Highway 12. For more information, visit barnplayhouse.com and follow us on Facebook. For tickets call 306.239.4600.

Year 33 at Hand Wave Gallery features Saskatoon fabric sculptor Shirley Taylor as she ushers in spring with Bevy of Birds and Birders. Mother’s Day welcomes an array of sculptured figures by Moose Jaw artist Wendy Parsons and her students in Go Figure. In June, Meacham’s own Anita Rocamora’s sculpted Field Study promises to question and surprise us. August showcases Donna Cutler’s Beaver Creek stitched drawings in Leaf-Shoot-Tree-Root. Gallery artists celebrate the Year of Craft with mixed media interpretations in Of The Hand. The season ends with gallery owner June Jacobs’ ethereal fibre statements in White on White. Connect to our History & Culture! Real-life dramas, retold TRAILS OF 1885 The Northwest Resistance took place on the prairies and parkland of western Canada in the spring of 1885. Its story is told in chapters everywhere from Winnipeg in Manitoba to Fort Saskatchewan in Alberta. Much of this real life drama played out right here in Saskatchewan, where Métis and First Nations each have their own stories of confrontations and battles with government forces as well as the subsequent fallout and its impact on Canadian history. These stories are told at locations ranging from major interpretive centres to remote meadows and hillsides where solitary historic markers recount an almost mystical past. Live our history! WESTERN DEVELOPMENT MUSEUM We invite you to get a glimpse into the past with a visit to the Western Development Museum’s 1910 Boomtown, home of North America’s longest indoor street! As you stroll through the buildings, imagine life during those times – the echo of the blacksmith’s hammer striking the anvil, the clip-clop of horses on the street, the rumble of the steam locomotive pulling into the station. The newest addition to Boomtown, Edwards Funeral Home, is set to open in June. In the Transportation Gallery, you will discover vintage wagons, buggies and automobiles that will take you back in time. Fuelled by Innovation explores the world of alternate fuel vehicles, some which are homegrown in Saskatchewan. The WDM’s Seasonal Display Area features agricultural equipment with an impressive line-up of steam traction engines, gasoline tractors and threshing equipment. Step inside a real sod-house, laugh at the sights and sounds of a 1920s Funhouse, admire the workmanship of an Eaton’s catalogue house and peruse the Popular Culture Wall in the Winning The Prairie Gamble: Farm Life in Saskatchewan exhibit. Your adventure at the Museum is not complete without visiting the gift shop chock-full of Saskatchewan-made products and treasures of our times. Dress in period costume and take home a souvenir of your visit with a stop in the Boomtown Photo Studio. Then step into the Boomtown Café, period 1910, and enjoy old-fashioned hospitality and tasty treats. Saskatoon’s Western Development Museum is located at 2610 Lorne Avenue and is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For admission and photo studio rates, call 306.931.1910 or visit wdm.ca.
