The Williston is holding its grand opening celebrations from Oct. 7 to 12, and everyone is invited to stop by and check out all that the adult community has to offer. There are several special events planned: • A Head Chef Show will be held in the Private Dining Room on Monday, Oct. 7 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Culinary Director Tyler Powers will present his own version of a how-to cooking show as he demonstrates an easy-to-make dish.

There will be samples offered following the demonstration and Powers will be available for a Q & A. RSVP required.

• On Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Residents and any interested people are invited to a Meet the Neighbours event by dropping into the W Café for a free cup of coffee and a pastry. Current Residents can mingle with interested parties’ and speak about their experience of living at the Williston. There will be free copies of the Leader-Post, card games etc.

• The Williston Grand Opening and Ribbon cutting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The big event is the official grand opening, and all stake holders, dignitaries, VIPs, Residents, and the public will be on hand to officially open The Williston.

There will be a small number of speeches and a ribbon cutting, followed by guided tours of The Williston’s amenities and show suites. There will be food stations and entertainment throughout the afternoon. RSVP required.

• On Thursday, Oct. 10, renowned wine expert Doug Reichel will lead two groups through an experience in Wine Pairing in The Cellar at the Williston.

The All-Inclusive Independent Living wing comprises over half of the U-shaped development and offers seven different floorplans to choose from. The Retirement Apartments make up the other wing and have four different layouts to choose from.

The two wings are united by a striking centrepiece: the gorgeous community reception lounge, which serves as a gathering place for residents, family and friends. “It’s absolutely amazing,” says Brown. “It just takes your breath away.

It’s almost overwhelming.”

Prospective residents can select their new home based on their lifestyle choice, preferred location and storey, their favourite colour scheme, and whether they have pets. (Pets are welcome on the first two of the building’s four storeys, and the nearby dog run makes it convenient to exercise your four-legged flatmates.

In the apartments, as in the common areas, The Williston is beautifully decorated with soft, inviting colours and dramatic light fixtures. All apartments are bathed in natural light, which is enhanced by high ceilings and an openconcept layout, with large windows and an adjoining patio or deck. Every suite has a full kitchen with five highend, stainless-steel appliances, including a double-door fridge with double, pull-out freezer drawers on the bottom, a smooth-top stove with a convection oven, a full-size dishwasher, an overthe-range microwave; quartz countertops; air conditioning; lots of cabinetry; and in-suite washer and dryer.

“The Williston is all about living your best retirement and having great options and choices along the way,” says Thompson.

“I love everything!”

When Vicky Baker’s husband, Barry, developed mobility issues and they found it necessary to move out of their bungalow – with its sunken family room and living room – they considered their options carefully.

They wanted a home with easy accessibility, and Vicky wanted to continue her role as a homemaker. She also wanted to enjoy the company of neighbours that were approximately her age.

The Williston fit the bill.

“The other residents are not real old, not real young. They’re all very nice. Everybody is out to meet everybody else because it’s new,” says Vicky. “I love everything: I love that it’s spacious and bright; I love the square footage; I love the view; I love the stove-top; I love having your own laundry area with washer and dryer; I love the wide blinds – I can open them right up or shut them right up for privacy; and I love the staff.”

The Bakers chose a location on the main floor, facing south onto The Williston’s centre courtyard. This level is petfriendly, so their daughter can bring her dog to visit.

It also has a walk-out patio, so Vicky can grow flowers and tomatoes.

And, while she enjoys doing her own cooking and cleaning, the fact that the home is easy to maintain is a plus. “It takes you minutes to clean up, really. There are rugs in bedroom and the rest is flooring that you just do with a vacuum,” she says.

“And it is luxurious,” she adds.

THE WILLISTON BOASTS GREAT FOOD POSTMEDIA CONTENT WORKS

Great food is a key component of a healthy, satisfying lifestyle, and that fact is not lost on the management and staff of The Williston.

Much care is being taken to ensure that the residents of The Williston who have chosen the All-Inclusive Independent Lifestyle are given meal options that are tailored to their specific needs – and their tastes.

“We can adjust and cater to whoever has dietary restrictions. That’s part of the overall plan here. We’ll meet with them and help develop a menu around whatever they like,” says Tyler Powers, culinary director at The Williston. “The menu that I have now has been developed around the people that I’m now cooking for.”

Powers began his career working as a Red Seal chef in restaurants and hotels but wanted to learn more about the nutritional aspects of food science, so he earned a diploma in nutrition and food service management at Langara College in Vancouver. That education will serve him well as he takes on the challenges at The Williston, where he will eventually be responsible for offering 35 different plated supper selections each week to approximately 100 residents in Victoria’s Dining Room, in addition to food that is served at the complex’s W Café and the

Blue Crown Pub. Every day, Victoria’s will offer five different supper options, including a seafood or poultry option; a red meat option; a lighter option, such as a sandwich and salad; a chef’s special; and a long-standing favourite, such as classic fried chicken. These menus will be offered on a four-week rotation, which will change seasonally. “With the five options, there’s usually something for everybody, no matter what the occasion, and, obviously, we can adjust and cater to whoever has dietary restrictions,” says Powers.

Residents of The Williston who are part of the All-Inclusive Independent Lifestyle program receive a breakfast buffet and plated supper each day in Victoria’s, which is included in their monthly rent, and Adult Apartment Rental residents are also able to purchase meals there. The wide window of time in which the breakfast buffet and supper is available means that residents can have control over when they eat.

The breakfast buffet is available from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and supper is served from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The W Café and the Blue Crown Pub are open to all residents of The Williston and to the general public, creating a meeting place for residents, their families and friends, and the community. “We want a

place for our residents to come and bring their family and watch the game and that sort of thing,” says Powers.

While he realizes that his role will be challenging when The Williston reaches full capacity, it’s a challenge that he is eagerly anticipating. “We’ve got a tremendous staff on hand, and we’re really excited about it. [Management] has given me lots of time to build things up, and plan things out, and organize and schedule,” he says. “Staff is still developing, but I’ve got a couple of cooks working with me… a couple of café baristas for Café W and … a couple of great bartenders lined up for the Blue Crown Pub.” He says that, even though all 100 seats are not yet filled at Victoria’s, the dining room functions as if it were at full capacity. “We want to be

“They couldn’t do enough for us” “I feel very lucky to be here – very fortunate,” says Darlene Stewart, a resident of The Williston since March. “There are such great people here – staff and residents. It’s great.”

Darlene has found that The Williston staff makes every effort to resolve problems and make residents feel welcome.

“They’ve just been wonderful,” she says. “There are glitches all the time when you move into a new place, but, as soon as you mention it – like a stuck door or your air conditioning – they’re just there immediately and helping you out. They have been just great – absolutely. And so pleasant all the time. They couldn’t do enough for us, really, so it’s been a pleasure being here.”

Meanwhile, the community residing at The Williston has come together nicely. “They’re just such friendly groups, and I think we’re all kind of pleased to be here and watching everything that goes on,” says Darlene, who frequently has coffee with her new neighbours. “It’s just fun being together… You see them walking around, or coming in or anything, and it’s just a really, communityfriendly place and thoroughly enjoyable.”

As the facility is completed, the Residents marvel at the new additions. “It’s beautiful – the interior decorator was just incredible,” says Darlene. “I was laughing with one of the girls because there are so many places to sit around here, you can just run around from one to the other with your coffee … It’s just a lovely place, and I’m just enjoying it so much, and really everything hasn’t even opened yet!”

At The Williston, Residents are encouraged to remain active and engaged, and it is Jana Hachkewich’s job to make that goal easy and enjoyable for everyone. As Recreation Coordinator, she strives to provide residents with a selection of activities tailored to their abilities and preferences.

For Hachkewich, finding stimulating activities is essential for a healthy and happy lifestyle.

“I just find recreation so important,” she said. “I fight for it.”

Hachkewich, who earned a diploma in Therapeutic Recreation from SIAST, has enjoyed working with seniors on both a professional and a personal level. “I have worked in a longterm care home in Moose Jaw for the last year-and-a-half, and I volunteer with my grandma, who does Save the Children,” she said.

Although Hachkewich organizes and plans activities, she emphasizes that it’s the Residents who choose what they want to do. “It’s all about their quality of life – their needs and their wants,” she said. “Not what I want.”

In order to determine what the Residents already appreciate – or would like to experience for the first time – she surveys them individually. “I do a leisure profile making me understand the Resident more – what their likes are, their dislikes,” she said.

“They basically check off, ‘Yeah, I like bowling,’ or, ‘No, I don’t like baking.’”

Then, Residents are informed about the details of the day’s activities so that they know exactly what is involved and whether or not they are interested in participating. “They want to know what’s going on, what’s happening, and, if they do, that can make it more enjoyable,” she said. “Not everyone likes a surprise.”

The activities must be as appealing as possible for the Residents. “They’ll be encouraged to try new things, but, ultimately, if they don’t prefer this activity or they really don’t want to do it, I’m not going to push them,” said Hachkewich. “I may work one-to-one with them and see where they’re at, but definitely not pushing or making them come to a program.”

Hachkewich must also organize a variety of pastimes to accommodate a wide range of physical and cognitive abilities. “I just try everything to see their strengths, or needs, or abilities, whether that’s cognitive programs, physical programs, engaging them to be more social, or bettering their quality of life,” she said. “First you assess them, then you implement the program – so determining if they need assistance with some activities – then you would plan your program and, after your program’s done, you would evaluate how they did.”

“My goal is to either make them feel better about themselves or keep them in a place where their quality of life is where they want it to be,” she said. “I strive for improving or maintaining their quality of life.”

Ultimately, there will be an assortment of individual and group activities. “Depending on what their needs, strengths and abilities are, there will be a mixture,” said Hachkewich, and some Residents even like to consult her in activities that they pursue on their own. “I can, if they are willing to move forward and make it a goal, but it’s all about what the Residents’ needs and wants are and how they can better themselves if they choose to.”
