The Holodomor refers to the Genocidal Famine created as a result of the policies of Joseph Stalin and his Soviet regime in Ukraine in the years 1932-1933. In commemoration, we remember and recognize the sinister history of the Holodomor during which millions of people — 31% of whom were children under the age of 10 — died from deliberate starvation.

Heightening Awareness of the Holodomor In 1932-33, millions of Ukrainians were purposely starved to death by the Soviet regime led by Joseph Stalin. To break the back of “nationalist” resistance to Soviet power, an ancient nation was condemned to death by artificial famine.

All grain and foodstuffs were forcibly seized. The territory of Soviet Ukraine and the

predominantly Ukrainianpopulated Kuban region of the Northern Caucasus (Soviet Russia) were isolated by armed units, so that people could not go in search of food to the neighbouring regions where it was more readily available.

In little more than a year, onequarter of the population of Soviet Ukraine perished. The

result was the Ukrainian genocide of 1932-33, known in Ukrainian as the Holodomor (from holod – famine, and moryty – to kill). In November of each year, people world-wide honour the victims of this crime against humanity.

At 12 noon on Tuesday, November 19th, the annual provincial commemoration of the Holodomor Ukrainian Famine-Genocide will take place in the Rotunda of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.

This event is open to the public.

The ceremony will be followed by a wreath laying at the “Bitter Memories of Childhood” monument southeast of the Legislative Building on Lakeshore Drive.

Background On May 7th, 2008, Saskatchewan became the first province in Canada to recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide through the passage of Bill 40: An Act to Recognize the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor).

Introduced by Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz with the unanimous support of MLAs from both the Government and Official Opposition, Bill 40 has

enshrined the fourth Saturday in November in each year as “Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day” for the purposes of recognizing the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) of 1932-33 and for the reflection on the lessons to be learned from that event.

The statue, entitled “Bitter Memories of Childhood,” stands on the grounds of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building on the banks of Wascana Lake. This haunting statue is of a young girl holding a handful of wheat stalks. It is dedicated to the most vulnerable victims of starvation – children. This Regina replica is cast from the same mold as the original located at Ukraine’s National Holodomor Memorial in Kyiv.

The statue is the work of Ukrainian sculptor Petro Drozdovskyi.

The project was initiated by the late Edward Lysyk of Regina. He envisioned the statue as a centrepiece in Regina’s Wascana Park and felt it would assist others to learn about the Holodomor Ukrainian Famine-Genocide. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Regina Branch worked with the Government of Saskatchewan to

make this important project happen.

It was dedicated on May 12, 2015.

During the dedication ceremony, those in attendance were moved by the words of Gregory Akulov, son of parents who survived the Holodomor, who recounted the experiences of his parents about what it was like to live during those dark times.

The Ukrainian community of Saskatchewan is very appreciative of the support of the Saskatchewan government to make this initiative become a reality in an important location on the Legislative grounds.

The Wascana Centre Authority is also acknowledged for their assistance in getting the statue in place.
