GALA CO-CHAIRS MESSAGE: We were honoured to present an evening that was designed to create a transformative experience as we reconsider our relations with one another in this great city. As we reflect on this amazing production on the banks of the river, let us open ourselves to the spirit of this gathering place that has become Saskatoon. The storm of reconciliation rages around us – we see it more and more frequently challenging what we thought we knew, but as the storm clears, let us embrace anew the shared experience that reminds us of why we chose this place called Saskatoon and how we can shape it for the future. Let’s celebrate the diversity of talent and culture that draws us to its banks. And let us consider anew our good relations with one another. This gala has given us an amazing opportunity to work side by side with community volunteers, a talented production crew and performers, and our honoured cultural advisors, Eugene and Lorna Arcand. We humbly thank Lorna and Eugene for their guidance and teachings along the way, and their genuine kindness in giving their time to this endeavour. Residential schools represent one of the darkest chapters of Canadian history. We sought to honour those survivors through this event – they are the very real and present reminder of what has been but also offer hope for a renewed future. Looking forward we celebrate Saskatoon. We are connected by the river that leads us to express our culture, reconsider our history and chart our future. Sincerely,
TITLE SPONSOR POTASHCORP MESSAGE: Since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission completed its work in 2015, we’ve become increasingly familiar with what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau describes as “one of the darkest chapters in Canadian history” – the Indian residential school system. We have considered the Calls to Action issued to all of us. And we have begun a journey in Saskatoon to achieve reconciliation. The 2017 PotashCorp Saskatoon Community Foundation Gala served as a testament to the resilience of residential school survivors, a recognition of our shared history and the contribution of Indigenous people in this territory. It also celebrated a homeland for all of us – First Nation, Métis, settlers, and newcomers. As we experience “wâseskwan” — we celebrate diversity in our community and the power of reconciliation. As the sky clears, let us recognize the dynamic and varied cultures of our citizens and commit to positive change. PotashCorp is proud to support the gala and the Foundation’s newest initiative – the Reconciliation Fund – intended to support reconciliation and our community’s responses to the Calls to Action. The gala was an extraordinary experience and we are sincerely grateful to the
team that organized this event. The evening not only enlightens and entertains, but also inspire us, on this land that is Treaty 6 and the homeland of the Métis, on which we now journey toward reconciliation.

COMMUNITY FUND FOR RECONCILIATION In June 2017, Saskatoon Community Foundation announced the creation of the Community Fund for Reconciliation. Proceeds from the 2017 “wâseskwan” PotashCorp Saskatoon Community Foundation Cultural Gala will be put toward this fund. Due to generosity of gala sponsors and attendees $100,000.00 will be granted in 2018. In addition a permanently endowed fund will be created, so that the Saskatoon Community Foundation will forever acknowledge and honour the importance of reconciliation among all Canadians. The Community Fund for Reconciliation will support projects that seek to address the
Truth and Reconciliation Commission`s 94 Calls to Action, projects which recognize the value of diversity and build strong relationships among the many diverse cultures in Saskatoon. The Saskatoon Community Foundation invites all of Saskatoon to add their voice by contributing to the fund. Through the guidance of cultural advisors information on the fund will be available on our website, www.saskatooncommunityfoundation.ca, early in 2018. Please contact Carm Michalenko at 306665-1766 to learn more.
FOUNDATION MESSAGE Welcome to Treaty Six Territory and the Traditional Homeland of the Métis. A community foundation has the privilege and the opportunity to support donor legacies over a long timeframe. Every era of a community provides unique opportunities to advance our ongoing dialogue with Saskatoon, to see new beginnings for our community’s future, and to tell our stories in new ways. On September 16, 2017, it was our honour to host ”wâseskwan”, a gala event celebrating the diversity of our culture, art, and cuisine. We acknowledge our shared past, and offer a vision for a community in which all people live together with respect, mutual understanding and a commitment to create a more inclusive future for all. In Cree, ”wâseskwan” means “the sky is clearing.”
Carm Michalenko, Executive Director , invites all to lend their voice and support to the Community Fund for Reconciliatio n.
SCF has begun a journey of reconciliation. We are taking our first steps by listening and learning about the experiences of First Nations and Métis. In 2016, SCF signed the Philanthropic Community’s Declaration of Action, as a sign of our commitment to Reconciliation. SCF participates in Reconciliation Saskatoon. Our grants from the Fund for Canada’s 150th, made possible by our donors and PotashCorp, also focused on reconciliation projects, providing many local organizations with historic opportunities to mobilize real cultural change. With these first steps, we start down a long-term path of healing, creating new relationships and new possibilities. This event comes to fruition thanks to many volunteers, including board, committee members, and the many other contributors of goods services and hard work. We have been inspired by your generosity, Saskatoon! Thanks to everyone who joined us for “wâseskwan”!
