MAKE IT A MINOT GETAWAY! We’re ready for you.

Minot is ready for you! Summer’s here and it’s the perfect time to head south of the border to the Magic City of Minot, N.D. Now, with multi-million dollar upgrades to the downtown infrastructure and to the popular Dakota Square Mall, along with completion of the newest and largest airport in the state, there are even more reasons to head south. Statistics Canada estimates there were 358,600 total person-visits from Saskatchewan to North Dakota in 2012 (the most recent year figures are available), with most of them (65.5 per cent) traveling for pleasure. More than half the visits were same-day trips. While there are no direct flights from Canada to Minot, many people stop to visit Minot on their way elsewhere. The airport offers excellent parking, and many Minot hotels also offer parking for those travellers, along with shuttle service to the airport. The main way to get there from here is by road. It’s an easy afternoon’s drive of 244 miles

or 393 kilometers from Regina to Minot and closer for communities like Estevan that are nearer to the border. There are numerous border crossings dotting what is the longest undefended border in the world, several of them in Saskatchewan. Visit www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/menu-eng.html for more information. With all the opportunities to sightsee and shop, there will still be room at an inn for visitors. There are currently more than 3,000 hotels/motels and a one-of-a-kind bed and breakfast, that together offer more 3,000 sleeping rooms. Many offer discounts for Canadians, so don’t forget to ask. The easy-to-use hotel availability feature on the Visit Minot website at www.visitminot.org can be big help when planning a trip. Visitors can use the My Map feature of the website to select the places they are interested in visiting and add them all to a personalized map of Minot. The mobile site is very easy to navigate and can be accessed from any mobile smartphone

or tablet device. The website also features a link to valuable coupons and information on events happening in Minot. And coupon books and all the information a visitor might need are also available at the Visitors Centre. After spending some time at the recently renovated Dakota Square Mall, with its more than 100 stores, you can head down to Main St., and Minot’s historic downtown shopping district, which recently underwent work on parking and infrastructure. There you will find a wide selection of shopping enticements, cooking shops, specialty clothing shops and jewelry stores you won’t find in Canada. Minot offers a number of parks and attractions, including those celebrating the area’s unique Scandanavian history. It is also a longstanding shopping mecca for Canadians. There’s little point in shopping if you can’t take it home with you, and Canadians staying more than 24 hours can take advantage of some exemptions

to the duties levied on imported goods. The Canada Border Service Agency has a great checklist for travellers at www.cbsa.gc.ca/travelvoyage/checklist-aidememoire-eng.pdf. Check with the Border Service if there are any questions. In general, when travelling to the U.S.: • Personal exemptions do not apply to sameday cross-border shoppers. • After 24 hours or more, Canadians can take back goods valued at up to $200 (CAN). Alcohol and tobacco cannot be claimed. Goods must be in possession at time of entry to Canada. If the value of the goods exceeds $200 after a 24-hour absence, duty and taxes are applicable on the entire amount of the imported goods. • After 48 hours or more, Canadians can bring home goods valued up to $800 (CAN) including alcohol and tobacco, within the prescribed limits set by provincial or territorial authorities. Goods must be in your possession. • After seven days or more, the maximum is also $800 (CAN) including alcohol and tobacco products. But, goods may be in possession at time of entry to Canada or can be sent later through courier, mail or delivery agency, except alcohol and tobacco, which must be in possession. All the goods will qualify for duty- and tax-

free entry if they are declared at the initial return to Canada. To ensure there are no hassles at the border before leaving for Minot, here are a few tips: • Remember to bring proper identification. Canadian citizens must present one of the following valid Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative-compliant documents when entering the U.S. by land: a valid passport, NEXUS card, Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card, enhanced driver’s licence (EDL) or enhanced identification card (EIC), or Secure Certificate of Indian Status. • Visit a Canada Customs office to identify any valuables you may want to take to Minot from home. Items like cameras, jewelry and tablets can be itemized and recorded, so there will be no problems coming back across the border. •Check with Canada Customs if you plan to change or improve any part of your vehicle. If your vehicle breaks down while in Minot, the repairs must be declared at customs and you may not have to pay the duties. But if you improve your vehicle (in other words, increase its value) Canada Customs law will no longer consider the vehicle Canadian. For more information, visit www.cbsa-asfc. gc.ca/menu-eng.html.

CAA Safe Summer Driving Tips Summer vacation is fast approaching, which means road trip season for many Saskatchewan families. Now’s the time to make your travel plans and check your vehicles, including campers and RVs to get them road ready. Here are a few automotive and driving tips from CAA to help keep motorists safe this summer: Automotive & Recreation Vehicle Tips: • Have your vehicle inspected prior to travelling to ensure your vehicle is in top operating condition and to avoid breakdowns during your summer travels. • If unexpected breakdowns do occur, be sure to have access to a roadside assistance provider

Welcome to the latest edition of the MINOT VISITOR GUIDE Writer/Editor: Carol Todd Postmedia Content Works ABOUT THIS CONTENT: This section was created by Content Works, Postmedia’s content studio

like CAA. The CAA Mobile App is also available to access roadside service or for CAA Member benefits including TripTiks, tour books and maps. Ask about travel insurance as well. • The tires are one of the most important items. Check for adequate tread depth, uneven tread wear, bulges, cuts, and proper tire inflation. Signs of tire problems include a side-to-side wobble at slow speeds; an increased shimmy or vibration at highway speeds; a sharp pull to the side; weaving or fishtailing. • Also check the brake fluid, the coolant and oil plus window washer fluids. • Remember to check radiator hoses, examine belts, and check proper belt tension, as well as the windshield wipers. • Vehicle batteries should also be checked and this can be easily completed at the CAA Care Centre at Regina Battery Depot, or at any CAA Approved Auto Repair Service. • The wheels on recreation vehicles, boat trailers and camper trailers should be checked as well.

The wheel lug nuts need to be set to the proper torque to make sure they do not come loose or come off the trailer. Wheel bearings should be greased and adjusted annually and trailer suspension springs also need to be inspected for wear. • Read the vehicle or RV owner’s manual for mechanical or maintenance information.

Driving Safety Tips: • Plan ahead, remain focused with a positive attitude, and refrain from any form of distracted driving including use of a mobile device while driving. • Check weather and road conditions to and from the destination and allow enough time to safely reach your destination. • Ensure seatbelts are in proper working condition. Children should be safely secured in car or booster seats that are properly installed.

• Slow to 60 km/h on Saskatchewan highways when passing working tow truck operators, emergency responders and construction workers. It’s a matter of life and death. • Be on the lookout for farm machinery on our roads and remember deer and moose are very much part of Saskatchewan’s landscape so best to drive with caution and remain focused and attentive. • Please obey the posted speed limit. • Carry a fully-charged cell phone for emergency purposes only and appoint a passenger to manage your phone and navigation needs.

• Pack a vehicle safety kit available at all CAA Saskatchewan Stores and on-line. Also have non-perishable food and water packed for all occupants. • Drivers, pull over when safe to do so, to make phone calls, text or review maps. • Gas prices are easily accessible via the CAA app & CAA Gas Price Monitor. • Never drink and drive. • If you’re overtired, stop regularly for breaks or appoint a second driver to help with driving. THE ZOO

It’s all at Lions and warthogs and red pandas, oh my. There’s something for all ages to see and do at the Roosevelt Park Zoo this summer. And, now there’s even a mystery, too. In addition to all the animals and activities at the zoo and Roosevelt Park, there will be evening fun for adults as well on June 29 from 6 to 10 p.m. as the zoo hosts Bacon and

Brew. That event will also feature the announcement of the identity of the zoo’s newest addition, the Mystery Animal. “It’s a fun night at the zoo for adults,” says Jennifer Kleen, Minot Zoo Crew executive director. “We bring in 25 local restaurants presenting their own recipes involving bacon and they come up with

something completely different and it sometimes even ends up on their menu,” she says. The evening costs $50 and includes local brewed craft beer, as well as wine, to wash down the bacon. “It’s a neat way to enjoy the zoo,” Kleen says. Tickets for Bacon and Brew are online at www.rpzoo.com/bacon-andbrew-and-wine-too/.

WHO’S NEW? As if bacon and brew weren’t enough, the evening will also feature the introduction of the zoo’s newest resident. Jennifer Kleen, Minot Zoo Crew executive director Kleen will only give hints, saying it is the most recently discovered large mammal in the world, found in 1940. “They like to hide, so we didn’t know they existed until recently in the grand scheme of things,” she says. The new addition is six feet tall and has never been in North Dakota before. All will be revealed at the Bacon and Brew event at Roosevelt Park Zoo on June 29.

Funat the Fair

Saskatchewan has Scotty, the t-rex, and Bismark, N.D. has Dakota, the duckbilled dinosaur, but who expects to see a dinosaur at the North Dakota State Fair? This year, fairgoers may be joined in their exploration of the multitude of attractions and events at the fair by a large, gray lizard-like being. Despite his roar and the twitching of his long, scaly tale, he is not dangerous — but is not to be missed. In fact, he’s just a baby, a baby tyrannosaurus rex, that is. He’ll be strolling the grounds, giving everyone a chance to get close up and personal. Don’t worry though, he’s not a real dinosaur, but a blend of animatronics and human action. As if a roving dinosaur isn’t enough, also new to the fair this year is Flippenout, an extreme trampoline demonstration act. The daily shows are free to fairgoers and feature triple flips, complex acrobatic routines, heights of 25 feet or more, snowboards, skis, ball, and cirque-style action. Renae Korslien, fair manager, issues a special invitation to Canadians. “Everything is for Canadians,” she says. “We are all about entertainment and nobody loves entertainment more than when the Canadians come down.” In addition to flipping out, visitors can also take advantage of numerous other free attractions throughout the fair and at the grandstand. Of special interest this year is young North Dakota singing sensation Lexi Wyman. The 19-year-old has been singing and writing songs since the age of seven, influenced by her love of country music and life on her farm in small town Newburg, N.D. While the dinosaur roams the grounds, raptors of a different sort will also be featured. Free to fairgoers is the Extreme Raptor Show, with an array of 15 to 20 eagles, hawks, falcons and owls. Shop ‘til you drop and get out of the heat in three air-conditioned Commercial Buildings with more than 400 vendors selling everything from jewelry and clothing to

cookware, aromatherapy and hot tubs. Paid events include the Western Grand National Truck and Tractor and a star-studded line-up of musical guests. See top entertainers such as Thomas Rhett, Little Big Town, Lonestar, Jason Aldean, and Brothers Osborne perform on the Grandstand Stage. Singer Fergie will also be on stage, sparking

MAKE IT A MINOT GETAWAY!

They’re there fore you Minot has all the shopping and attractions a visitor could desire. And, there’s a lot to offer for duffers, too. North Dakota has many diverse and spectacular golf courses, making it easy and economical for golfers to tee up. The state’s rich golf history features the Vardon Golf Club, which has been hosting golfers since 1929. Originally designed by Tom Vardon, brother of six-time British Open Champion Harry Vardon, this classic course has quick greens that require accurate approach shots. The Links of North Dakota, located in Ray, is another must-play course. With its breathtaking setting, this immaculately manicured course provides an ideal and unforgettable golf experience. As one of the purest examples of links-style golf, this course was designed for golfers who truly appreciate the origins of the game. Nestled by the beautiful Lake Sakakawea, the Links is not just for the highly skilled player; with five sets of tees, it can accommodate golfers of all ability levels. The Bully Pulpit Golf Club adds a new dimension to North Dakota’s historic city of Medora. Named for the spirit of Theodore Roosevelt, the Bully Pulpit Golf Club is an 18-hole championship course.

There are also many other great courses in North Dakota: The Bois de Sioux Golf Club is the only public golf course in the United States to have nine holes in one state and nine holes in another. The front side is in Wahpeton, N.D. while the back nine is in Breckenridge, Minn. In the Fargo-West Fargo area, the Edgewood Golf Course was established in the mid-1920s. Golfers can enjoy this popular traditional golf course that has beautiful, treelined fairways. King’s Walk is an 18-hole Arnold Palmer Signature Champion Golf Course designed and developed by the Palmer Course Design Company. Opened in 2002, this is one of the state’s premiere golf courses. Gateway Cities Golf Club in Portal is located right on the border between Canada and the United States and is in two different time zones. With wide-open fairways and large greens, the big attraction for this course is that eight holes are in Canada and one is in North Dakota. With the Souris River winding through the course, Minot’s Souris Valley offers golfers 18 beautiful and challenging holes. With all the many gorgeous and challenging courses available, specifically designed for every skill level, there’s something fore everyone.
