Introduce EuropEan flair to your back yard by Hilary Klassen From Parisian cafés and English gardens to the vineyards of old Italy and echoes of the Renaissance, the venues and vistas of Europe have inspired design in myriad ways all over the globe. That inspiration is beautifully manifested at Garden Architecture & Design (GAD), a long-time fixture of Riversdale. With its central location, it is now forms the hub of the Riversdale renewal, steps from the Farmer’s Market as well many new shops and restaurants. It is here that other worlds open up, and global influences are felt. Here a European courtyard can be imagined and then replicated for your back yard, or scaled for your patio. Begin with impact items like old world European statuary to help set the scene. “With their rust patina finishes, these cast iron statues look like they’ve been sitting in a European garden for centuries,” says Neil Robinson, who co-owns GAD with Delores Wionzek. Other antique reproduction pieces such as cast iron urns and concrete pieces in hand-carved stone create similar impact in a European courtyard. Stone benches and planters, pineapple finials, Corinthian columns and smaller statues are some of the many options available. “They’re just stunning pieces to place in your garden as a focal point,” says Robinson.

To complete your European-style garden, select attractive and comfortable seating. The addition of a fire table will extend your outdoor living season.
English gardens offer order and serenity in a more formal arrangement. To create impact, Robinson suggests incorporating a series of three globe boxwoods in planters, and possibly ending with a cone boxwood or topiary to anchor the series. The use of very simple planters for this kind of ‘item impact’ planting achieves a minimalist look, a mark of English gardens as well as today’s growing minimalist culture. Blending in some metal elements in the form of wrought iron, metal sculptures and aluminum furniture frames creates additional interest. Robinson says mixing metals is not a problem. When appropriately balanced, cast iron statuary, stone and metal features come alive with the addition
of these beautiful green plantings. Vines are a common feature in the architecture and gardens of Europe. Adding vines to your backyard garden, such as a mandevilla with its profuse blossoms, brings additional beauty to your space. Next, choose attractive and comfortable seating to complete your European garden. Garden Architecture features an abundance of seating arrangements – the options are endless. “Choose your fabrics to create the desired ambience. You can do rich opulent colours, outdoor jacquards and prints, big florals, or classic patterns – you’re unlimited,” says Robinson. The selection will help

rIversdale sprIngs forward wIth frEsh idEas by Darlene PolacHic A springtime stroll through Saskatoon’s trendy Riversdale district reveals fresh discoveries and intriguing finds at every turn. Here are just a few of the extraordinary businesses you should explore this season! ALLSPACE Mark Allberg’s Riversdale store Allspace specializes in time-honoured Herman Miller classic furniture, and more. That’s MORE, as in Medical, Office, Residential, and Educational furniture in the mid-century period style. “Herman Miller brands itself as a lifestyle company,” Allberg says, “and caters to all those furniture genres. In our store we have the classic designs of Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Alexander Girard and others who designed for Herman Miller in the 1940s to the mid60s.” Allberg has been in the office furniture business in Saskatoon for 38 years, and has been a devotee of Herman Miller products for longer than that. His shop at 332-20th Street West focuses on the mid-century classic style which tends to be “minimalistic in design and scale.” You’ll see wire-frame chairs, wire-frame dowel chairs, and fibreglass shell chairs, all classic Eames’ designs. The window display features a Nelson desk. A luxurious leather and wood Eames lounge chair and ottoman are flagships of Herman Miller designs and are advertised as having the “warm, receptive look of a well-used first basemen’s glove.” Allspace carries smaller items as well, like the Hang All, a metal frame with colourful knob hangers, and the Magis Cu Clock, a modernized version of the familiar cuckoo. There’s a Capelli stool made of undulating, meshing wood slats, and a full range of classic Nelson lamps. Herman Miller products are distinc-
tively styled and popular with discerning homeowners, as well as medical and business professionals, architects and designers. Allberg says, “Herman Miller product placement in movies is vast. I saw an Yves Behar lattice-back chair in white in the recent ‘Hunger Games’ movie. “Clients often tell us stories about their Herman Miller piece. There’s a pas-
sion for this product, and a strong pride of ownership.” ON2U BODY PIERCING AND TATTOOS Veronica Tricker has been in love with art her whole life. She grew up drawing and sketching, and after spending 15 years as a dental assistant, decided to pursue a more

artful career. That career was body piercing and tattoos, and she recently opened ON2U Body Piercing and Tattoos at 101B 20th Street West in the Idylwyld & 20th Round Corner Mall. Tricker says working in the dental field was good ground work for her when it came to setting up her shop and creating a clean, sterile environment. At ON2U, Tricker does body piercing, custom tattoo work and laser tattoo removal. “People come in with a design in mind, we discuss it, and I frequently make adjustments so the tattoo will be unique to them. “I also try to help clients make good decisions regarding placement and size. The most popular tattoos today are font. Some want whole books inked on them — in small font! I tell them you should be able to read a tattoo from 10 feet away. You also have to consider that skin doubles every few years and a small font tattoo can end up looking blurry.” Tricker is physician-trained to do laser
tattoo removal. She says there is a good market for people wanting to remove unwanted tattoos or lighten up others. Tricker’s shop is not just pristinely clean and brightly lit, it’s visually stimulating, as well. The walls are liberally hung with pieces from her own art collection, which comprises the work of artists from around the world, plus the creations of her husband, Arthur Perlett, who is a custom furniture builder and creator of funky art pieces and sculptures. Tricker has served on the Riversdale Business Improvement District Board for eight years. SOULPAPER Soulpaper, the all-things-paper store at 118 20th Street West, is surging into spring with a flurry of new and exciting paper products. The business’s proprietors, Susan Gallagher and her husband Alesandor Pozsonyi, are extremely busy with wedding invitation orders, but Gallagher has no lack of enthusiasm for initiatives like the popular mixed

MEET YOU IN media art classes. “We’ve been working with alcohol-based inks on non-porous surfaces,” she says. “In class, we’re creating a series of decorative tags showcasing various techniques. We used the alcohol inks on glossy paper and a plastic-like yupo paper.” The result is an exquisite watercolour-y effect. Though current classes are full, Gallagher encourages people to watch for announcements regarding fall start-up classes when the tag series will continue with distress inks, distress oxides and acrylic paints. Crepe paper flowers are the latest craft revival, but they’re flowers with a difference. Soulpaper has a new line of beauti-
fully hued papers plus instruction books for elegant floral creations. Gallagher says the flowers are popular as decorations for showers and weddings. “We have the latest Lamy pens, and Traveller’s Notebooks in the new limited edition colour of olive,” Gallagher says. The shop is ablaze with colour from an array of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day inspired papers and gifts, as well as pretty notebooks in spring colours and motifs. There is also a delightful line of party and event decor items including paper chains, garlands, fans, and banners. “We’re already bringing in gift items for teacher appreciation and graduation. For the graduate, we have things like fountain

MEET YOU IN pens, beautiful stationery, brass seals and wax. The Traveller’s Notebook would be a fabulous gift for a grad. So many young people like to travel a bit before they settle in for their next phase of life.” BEEHIVE FLOORING Beehive Flooring may be 104 years old as a business, but there’s nothing archaic about how it operates. Value, honesty and excellent service continues to be its motto as well as the criteria behind Beehive’s recent remodel and update. Co-owner Tim Wake says he is taking his 50 years of experience in the flooring business and revamping Beehive Flooring to offer customers the highest quality of product at the most affordable prices. “We’re doing that by cutting down on our inventory, sticking with the most recognizable suppliers, and buying in larger quantity so we can get better prices and pass the savings on to the customer. We’re also focusing on North American and European product.” Wake says domestic markets are chang-
ing and trends in flooring are shifting. “Demand for genuine hardwoods is slowing down. There’s a surge in luxury vinyl tile which comes in a wide range of looks from ceramic tile to hardwood. Some luxury tile is a mix of vinyl and limestone. We also have high quality linoleum that looks like hardwood.” Ceramic tile flooring is waning in popularity, but Wake says carpet is still strong. “The trend is to SmartStrand carpet which is virtually indestructible. I gave a sample to a customer to test. She did everything to it — put bleach on it, paint, coffee, dye. Nothing stained it.” Softer carpet material is also in demand, including some that has the feel of silk. Beehive Flooring has been at its 317 Avenue C location since 1952, and could be called an anchor tenant of the Riversdale business district. “It’s been an excellent location for us,” Wake says. “When dad moved the business here from Second Avenue, people said ‘You won’t last there.’ But it was the best move he ever made.”

Carpeting is making a comeback with homeowners because of its softness and durability, say the experts at Beehive Flooring.
