askatoon Fashion and Design Festival (SFDF) is a volunteer-run organization promoting and showcasing emerging and established fashion designers and locally owned boutiques. This year they celebrate five years of promoting local design in Saskatoon. Every year, Saskatoon Fashion and Design Festival (SFDF) organizes fashion events to celebrate and highlight the diverse and vibrant fashion community in Saskatoon and Saskatchewan. The majority of SFDF’s programming is free to the public, creating accessible events to captivate a wide range of tastes. Their largest event, SFDF POSE, is happening Sunday, June 5 at the River Landing Amphitheatre from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This year, programming will include designer and boutique fashion shows, an outdoor marketplace and community involvement from the music, dance and acro yoga communities. This is a family friendly event, free of charge. Designers showing in SFDF Pose this year include: Dean Renwick, Whiskey Teacup, Melissa Squire, Rude Vogue, T. Akins and She Native.

HOLD THAT POSE! Saskatoon Fashion and Design Festival will host its POSE event at the River Landing Amphitheatre, Sunday, June 5 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pictured here is one of the stylish looks created by designers, Sharlyn VandenBroek and Laura Crossman, the founders of Whiskey Teacup, featured at last year’s POSE. Look out for SFDF this fall when their upmarket event, SFDF Runway, is presented in style at the iconic Delta Bessborough Hotel.

ABOUT

THE DESIGNERS DEAN RENWICK: Creating custom couture is how Dean Renwick became ‘Dean Renwick.’ As a designer in Los Angeles, Dean turned heads dressing Bette Midler, Kiefer Sutherland, Guns N’ Roses and the Eurythmics. Since returning home to Regina, SK, Dean has opened his studio — and his heart — designing sexy, sophisticated styles for the stage, screen and women of all ages, giving of his time and talent to causes he cares about and mentoring the next generation of creative couturiers. WHISKEY TEACUP: Whiskey Teacup started when Sharlyn VandenBroek and Laura Crossman discovered their mutual passion for unique design. Their collections find inspiration from unconventional fabrics and the ability to shape materials into one-of-a-kind garments. MELISSA SQUIRE: Melissa Squire’s self-titled fashion label is a 1950s pinup-inspired brand with an edgy, rockabilly attitude. Her unique and vivacious collections are filled with playful dresses, repurposed denim jackets, skirts, tops, and eco-friendly accessories. You can find Melissa Squire year-round at her boutique, Alchemy, located downtown across from Earls. RUDE VOGUE: Featuring the perfect blend of streetwear and style, Rude Vogue is a new collection of accessories and apparel now available at Momentum in Saskatoon. T. AKINS: Tara Akins has spent the past 10 years in Vancouver creating one-of-a kind custom wardrobes for the film, theatre, and dance communities. Upon her return home to Saskatoon, Tara has created a premiere dress collection under her label, T. Akins. Careful use of colour, print and flowing fabrics inform her unique and meticulous collections. SHE NATIVE: Devon Fiddler is a Cree Woman from the Waterhen Lake First Nation in Saskatchewan. Devon is a social entrepreneur, and the Chief Changemaker of SheNative, a brand of handbags and accessories. Devon has built SheNative to help empower and change perceptions of Indigenous Woman and girls and is certainly one to watch in Saskatchewan’s upcoming design community. - Conway is director/co-founder of the Saskatoon Fashion & Design Festival

pring has arrived, the season to go exploring! Shut off Netflix, get out of the house and discover the new fashion delights that await at Saskatoon’s many outstanding fashion retailers. Online shopping is no substitute to the joyful experiences on offer at our city’s many one-of-a-kind independent fashion shops. The Sandbox in the City is one of Saskatoon’s fashion destinations that has upped its game in recent months, relocating to a brand spanking new location at 616 Main Street, just off Broadway Avenue. Co-owners (and sisters) Colleen Tait and Juanita Schindel devoted over two years to the design and construction of the new Sandbox, with the objective of enhancing their customers’ shopping experiences. The new 3,000 square foot boutique occupies the main floor of an eyecatching, LEED-certified retail/commercial building designed by Kindrachuk Agrey Architecture. The new Sandbox features 22-foot high open ceilings, huge expanses of glass that flood the space with natural light and a colourful industrial chic décor. “The space itself is very calming, welcoming and open,” says Colleen Tait. “In our expanded space, we can really tell fashion stories within the store through our displays.” The additional space has allowed The Sandbox to display its huge fashion inventory to best advantage, including the creation of a unique area exclusively dedicated to collections by leading Canadian designer Joseph Ribkoff. “Joseph Ribkoff is one of the best-fitting and top quality Canadian lines we have ever come across. They’re so good to work with,” says Tait. “In western Canada, The Sandbox is definitely one of the top retail distributors of the Joseph Ribkoff line,” says Schindel. This spring, The Sandbox won a national window display competition hosted by international fashion brand Desigual. “One of our long-time staff members, Samantha Carnduff, came up with a concept for the Desigual display and painted the backdrop herself,” says Schindel. “Desigual is all about fun, pattern and colour. Sam chose Desigual patterns from their different spring pieces and did a freehand painting that incorporated all of those colours and designs,” says Tait. Among the unique touches at the new Sandbox location is a cleverly designed and integrated runway for instore fashion shows. “That’s something we could never do at our old location. We always had to rent an outside space for our special events. Now we can host lots of events and tie in to the community even more,” says Tait.

In their old location, customers often had to wait for an available dressing room. The new store offers six spacious dressing rooms to accommodate even the busiest shopping days. Tait says the space has become a social networking area, filled with constant chatter and laughter — something that can’t be experienced by solitary online shopping. “One of the priorities we had when we designed the new store was to make our dressing rooms a focal point for the store. We wanted them to be front and centre. This is where all of the social networking really happens, with all of our customers talking and engaging with one another,” says Tait. A lounge area is adjacent to the dressing room area, offering ‘martini bar’ seating where shoppers and their significant others can relax. During in-store special events, the martini bar is used for serving refreshments. “It’s a great place for the men to perch, while the women are shopping. They don’t feel like they’re in the way. They can be on their phone or their iPads, relaxing. They love it!” says Schindel. A mezzanine area overlooks one side of the store, accommodating a staff lounge, office and a photo studio where Sandbox staff snap countless images of newly arrived fashions for its popular Facebook page and web-

site. The Sandbox further engages with its clients by offering informative fashion seminars and clinics. “We’re currently doing a “closet cleanse” series on our Facebook page, featuring three of our clients. We’re also going to be offering an in-store mini-clinic with the Canadian fashion brand Simpli, coordinated by Meagan Schindel,” says Tait. “Simpli is a huge fashion line and there are so many different ways the pieces can be worn. It’s become one of our best-selling brands. The quality and the fit is outstanding,” says Schindel. The Sandbox is abloom with fresh new colours, prints and patterns for Spring and Summer 2016. “We’re seeing lots of pattern this season, particularly florals and stripes,” says Schindel. Many of the new fashion pieces on display are truly seasonless, says Tait. “They can be worn all year, by layering or adding a jacket.” “That’s also true of our dresses. They can be worn alone for dressy occasions, or with the addition of a denim jacket, you’ve got a great outfit for work or shopping,” says Schindel. Discover unending fashion options for spring, summer and year-round, at The Sandbox in The City, now located at 616 Main Street, just off Broadway. Visions Salon & Spa provided the hair and make-up artistry for our cover model Rochelle Bondarenko. Visions Salon stylist Shawna Fairborn gave Rochelle delicious wrap-around curls, set with Theory Firm Hairspray and detailed with Surface Shaping Wax. For Rochelle’s make-up, Shawna used SST CC cream to create a smooth base for application. Dramatic smokey eyes were complemented with a subtle nude lip colour. ON OUR COVER The Sandbox in the City captures the essence of this season’s easy-breezy style in a fabulous wrap-style geometric print halter dress by Canadian design legend Joseph Ribkoff, worn by Rochelle Bondarenko with She Modelling. Rochelle’s dress will make a statement wherever she goes! By adding a blazer, she can wear it to the office, or dress it down for weekend wear with a Mavi denim jacket. The Sandbox adds playful accessories to complete Rochelle’s look with a black fringed French Connection purse, Holly Yashi earrings and Tweed sandals by Emu Shoes of Australia.

MAKE A SPLASH! Klassique Designs captures the essence of spring in a flirty ensemble worn by Taylor Dick that begins with a dynamic graphic print dress by Montreal fashion brand Volt. Exclusive to Klassique, this innovative fashion design firm has captured attention for its unique visual prints, flattering silhouettes and easy-care fabrics. Each Volt design is a two-in-one dress; wear it either way depending on your mood. Taylor tops off her dress with a jaunty raincoat from Blaest by Lillebøe. Designer Lisbeth Lillebøe is the creative force behind Blaest, winner of the Norwegian Award for Excellence for her vibrant and colourful raincoats. This is Klassique’s fourth season carrying the exclusive Blaest line, which sells out every season. Bring your wardrobe fashion forward at Klassique Designs in Scotia Centre.

ut away that pantsuit. Banish the torn jeans to the closet. Spring and Summer 2016 are definitely the time to slip on a dress and feel feminine again. Pick a dress for success, whether it is a cocktail dress for a summer wedding, a tailored shift for work, or a flirty sundress for Saturday brunch. You will love the options available for every occasion this summer. Since Kajoo Kamal founded Klassique Designs in the Scotia Centre 34 years ago she has made it her business to know dresses. Her store has been the go-to choice in western Canada for women wanting something special ever since. “Dresses are comfortable and easy to wear; your outfit is complete. If you need a little grounding piece, you can add a jacket,” says Kamal. Many women who have trouble finding pants that fit properly love the way dresses work for them. There are trends every season but the secret this year is the fabrication, she says. Fabric manufacturers have options that are “lovelier than ever with beautiful weights and feel. Softer knits that used to be harder to wear are a bit sturdier or lined.” Kamal said the most common colours manufacturers are showing this season are the summer neutrals — sand, blush, ivory or white-on-white — but there are options for everyone. “Not all women want these colours, though, for practical reasons or they don’t suit them. I bought colour whenever I could so they have options.” In addition, she says that black and white as well as animal prints are like basics now. Some of her favourite designers include readyto-wear art — graphic dresses by a Quebec company called Volt Design. The fabrication is a tecpoly mechanical stretch with patterns produced by graphic designers and assistance from students at McGill. You can wear the dresses front to back and all seasons. Kamal tops them with a brightly coloured summer raincoat from Norway, Lis Blaest by Lillebor.

SUN-KISSED BEAUTY Merle Norman introduces flirty colour collections for Spring and Summer 2016! Refresh your look with the newest cosmetic colour palettes from Merle Norman Studio in Scotia Centre. Paulette Schumacher (left) and Bailey Tobin (right) are wearing ultra-feminine colours for every age. Both are wearing soft neutral eye colours, highlighted with a pop of colour. Paulette chooses a soft lilac shadow with black eyeliner. Bailey opts for cool turquoise/aqua green with vibrant Ocean Blue or Peacock as an eyeliner. Bailey is wearing Merle Norman’s popular false eyelashes; Paulette is wearing the new Fat Lash mascara for a full lash look. Paulette’s lips are rosy in Fuchsia Flirt and Bailey’s are a sheer soft peach. Merle Norman’s Cherry Crush Lipcolor is the hottest trend for a sheer pop of colour. Both are wearing Merle Norman’s popular Liquid Blush for a buildable satin finish to give a lively glow to the cheeks, topped by Bronzing Powder for a sun-kissed look. look out for a thrilling range of colours and colour combinations from bright shades paired with nudes to aqua greens and sizzling golds. This is also the season for waterproof eyeliners. The season just wouldn’t be complete without an excellent bronzer! There are several amazing shades available that will work with your skin tone to give you that radiant sun kissed

glimmer. Also available on the market for the season is liquid shimmer. This product is ideal for facial contouring and highlighting. Add it to your body lotion or foundation to make your skin look luminous. The word about eyelashes is to watch for Big, Bold and Beautiful! That’s right! When it comes to lashes;

fat is where it’s at! Many are turning to false eyelashes to achieve this look but if that’s not your thing, try using a mascara primer. “The primer lifts and divides each lash giving you the look of lush fat lashes. It also helps keep your mascara on longer because it doesn’t crumble off as easily,” remarks Schumacher. Don’t forget your eyebrows! Yes, the

brows need attention too. After all, they provide a frame for your lovely eyes and help shape your whole face. You don’t need a big, heavy look; a soft highlighting with an eyebrow pencil or powder will do the trick. Proper skin protection is a good idea all year long but when the weather warms up we tend to spend more time outside in the elements. For this reason, Schumacher advises that it’s important to search for foundation that not only looks great on you but provides protection from UVA and UVB rays. These foundations can protect from sunburn and sun damage. Look for foundations that are SPF 30 or higher that contain moistures to maximize the effect of the product. From skin care and foundation to lip colour, eyes and cheeks; this season’s cosmetic products will give you a stunning radiant look with a splash of the colours of the spring and summer. Create your own

personal brand Hilary Klassen Postmedia Content Works

Defining your own personal style is a way for you to speak without words.

NAUTICAL STRIPES Vanessa Fournier from Masala Model and Talent looks sleek and cool in some of spring’s strongest trends from Anthonys Fashion. Vanessa’s ecru and navy striped snap-front high-waisted skirt from Soaked in Luxury pairs beautifully with a tonal sheer sleeveless top by Mexx. A navy drape blazer by Soaked in Luxury punctuates the whole outfit, making it office-ready and complementing so many favourite spring hues. A light taupe Selected ankle boot will become your go-to boot for dressing up or down this spring. The Lavolta taupe and grey handbag is this season’s ‘it’ bag. A Garbo silver and glacier necklace with a Garbo mottled clamp cuff tops off Vanessa’s chic look. For all your spring fashions check out Anthonys Fashion on First Avenue, now for men and women!

T

he idea of a personal brand suggests that success comes from your self-presentation or self-packaging. Personal branding involves marketing yourself and your career as brands. Everyone has a personal brand. The only question is whether you recognize it or are simply doing a version of ‘fashion’ by default. People with successful personal brands actively and consciously cultivate a personal fashion statement. It is not accidental. Mackenzie Firby of Two Fifty Two Boutique in University Heights Square says the first step to creating your personal brand is understanding who you are. “Your wardrobe choices are a direct reflection of your personality! Every item you wear says something about yourself,” says Firby. “Bright and bold coloured and patterned items as well as fitted pieces project confidence and self-assurance.” She says outgoing people who enjoy attention are more likely to choose the bold and the vibrant. Less flamboyant personalities may feel more comfortable blending in, with neutral patterns and colours. However, neutrals can be impactful as well. “Black on black, or ‘New York Style’ as we refer to it, can project as much confidence as a bright colour can,” says Firby. The next step to consider is whether you need to stray from your own style to achieve the goal of dressing for success. Firby has some advice from one of her favourite designers. “Every person has a style and if you stray from this you likely won’t be confident or able to express the real you,” says Firby. “As Diane Von Furstenberg says, ‘You be You.’ Don’t try to be someone else or wear clothing to try and impress others because it likely won’t work.” However, this does not preclude the possibility of elevating one’s sense of style by becoming a better student of fashion and a more informed consumer. When your sense of style gets an upgrade, your personal brand does too. Fashion is always changing and one’s sense of style is never final, it is constantly evolving and responding to changing circumstances. Bringing your personal brand to professional environments can alter your future. Even life at the lake can reflect your personal brand. In all cases, an informed sense of style doesn’t simply arise from buying random items or cluttering up the closet with things that are on sale. It is important that your wardrobe consciously communicates what you intend. “You have to play the part and this includes your clothing. If you want to look confident, cool and glamourous, you need to wear clothing that reflects this,” says Firby. Sometimes we need help. Some of us, through no fault of our own, do not have a natural sense of what works. Whether you’re a makeover candidate or just someone who needs some refreshing ideas, conferring with an image consultant can make a huge difference. Personal image consultant and fashion stylist, Riley Lawson, studied fashion in Vancouver. Based in Regina, Lawson does one-on-one wardrobe styling consultation. She helps clients build wardrobe functionality, professional image cohesion and boost personal confidence.

“Defining your own personal style is a way for you to speak without words, and often how you give an impression to the public,” says Lawson. “The secret is to just ‘do you’ – never succumb to the pressures of trends or popularity. Instead express your true self in the best way for your body shape and style.” Armed with assistance from a professional image consultant, you are ready to consult with Firby about creating your personal brand. Two Fifty Two Boutique carries many brands that Firby brings in from places like New York and Las Vegas, such as Lisa Freede, Hunter Bell, Diane Von Furstenberg (DVF), ZCD Montreal and a recent addition to the showroom, Iro, to name a few. “It is how you wear your personal brand that really makes a statement. If you own it, you rock it!” she says. Visit Two Fifty Two Boutique at their University Heights location, and their online location at twofiftytwoboutique. com and be inspired!

For spring, it tends to be more colourful with some surprising colours. Jennifer Jacoby-Smith Postmedia Content Works

“S

pring is exciting. It’s all about colour,” says Tammy Kehoe, owner of Gentries in Scotia

Centre. Retailers are offering up a fresh crop of colours this season. From handbags to dresses to jackets to shoes, accessories and more, spring fashions are popping up in a full spectrum of hues. “On the one side there seem to be the calm, peaceful colours and then on the other you have your bold, vibrant ones. It gives everyone a great choice,” Kehoe adds. Laura deCarufel, editor-in-chief at Thekit.ca says two of the biggest colour trends for spring are bold orange and vibrant green. “For spring, it tends to be more colourful with some surprising colours,” says deCarufel. “For example, orange and green are not necessarily colours you would think to wear, but designers were going in a bit of a statement direction.” The other main colour trend – or “non-colour” as deCarufel calls it – is white. “It was in every collection,” she notes. “White for spring is not necessarily ground-breaking. The thing that was different about it for spring 2016 was that it was shown head to toe.” Designers at the spring shows were showcasing completely white outfits – including accessories and shoes. For instance, a beautiful white dress would be paired with a white handbag and white shoes. “It felt new and very fresh,” says deCarufel. It wasn’t just vibrant white, but also shades of cream that were creating a

FRINGE FACTOR For Fashion Chronicle, model Delle Napper shows off one of the season’s hottest trends: fringe! This striking maxi dress by iconic Montreal designer Frank Lyman is the perfect choice for any occasion – classic with a touch of whimsy. The fringed skirt is a guaranteed attention-getter. Totally on trend, longer length dresses are making a big comeback this season for all occasions. Frank Lyman fashions are a favourite with Saskatoon’s best-dressed women, who love the flattering fit and cut. SPRING FLORAL FANTASY For Gentries in Scotia Centre, Lisa Heuchert from SHE Modelling is springtime fresh in this feminine floral dress by Komarov. The dress is a work of art with colourful flowers in beautiful spring hues like ivory, blush, rose and sunshine yellow. Pearl jewellery by Garbo, also from Gentries, provides a glamourous touch, including a pearl bracelet, necklace and pearl drop earrings. A delicate sheer shawl provides the final touch for Lisa’s special occasion look. When your event needs a special touch of glamour, check out Gentries in Scotia Centre.

buzz on the runway; deCarufel cites another example for the office which paired a white relaxed fit pant with a cream turtleneck, again with a white purse and light shoe. The peaceful colours in Gentries include various shades of white and pale notes of pink, blue and yellow. These bright and light colours will feel like a breathe of fresh air after the heavy winter darks. Kehoe has also seen some natural colours of cinnamon, iced coffee, and bronze, which pair nicely with neutrals such as white, cream and ivory. With such intense colour everywhere

white lace dress, for example, can be very chic and urban. Kehoe is also seeing a lot of colour in jewellery, as well. From colourful stones to statement necklaces in vivid hues, jewellery is a great way to transition a blouse from winter into spring. “The other major trend in terms of accessories is the return of the earring,” says deCarufel. And not just dainty little studs, but oversized, jaw-dropping, shouldergrazing danglers. The best way to pull off this look is to keep other accessories to a minimum. “It’s amazing to bring in colour that way, I think, because it’s around your face and

for spring, it can be intimidating to incorporate them into your wardrobe. But both Kehoe and deCarufel agree scarves are playing a big role as a way to inject some delicious tints into your wardrobe this season. A pretty scarf can take the place of a necklace. Adding a pop of bold orange and pink with a patterned scarf over a baby grey knit can be a great way to freshen up your look. DeCarufel adds, a bright orange pump can be added to a simple white lace dress to be right on trend. Topping off your look with a colourful jacket instead can also be fun. framing your face a little bit,” says deCarufel. Adding a pop of colour with an earring while wearing a white suit would be a very trendy, head-turning style. If you’re an adventurous type, there may be one more way to incorporate these colour trends – but it’s only for the truly fashion brave – adding these shocking spring colours through a vivid eye shadow or a touch of brightcoloured eyeliner. “It’s a bit of a different twist on it – to have a bit of neon green liner on your upper lid,” deCarufel explains. “It’s a bit of a beauty dare for sure, but it’s kind of amazing if you go for it.”

eyond compare… Those words best describe the exclusive appeal of Water’s Edge II by North Ridge Development Corporation, this year’s Builder of the Year at the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association’s Bridges Awards. The luxury condominium development is one-of-a-kind in so many ways. First and foremost is Water’s Edge II’s prestigious location at 627 Saskatchewan Crescent West, offering incomparable riverfront views. “There is nothing else like Water’s Edge II in the city,” says North Ridge marketing agent Trish London. “There are only 18 suites and all of them face the river — really unheard of. The exclusivity of the building is very appealing to discerning buyers.” North Ridge business partners Wally Mah and Jules Calyniuk purchased the coveted piece of land located near Gabriel Dumont Park over 14 years ago. “We realized it was one of the few remaining sites in Saskatoon with this kind of river view. It truly is a one-of-a-kind property,” says Calyniuk. With the completion of Water’s Edge I several years ago, North Ridge began construction of Water’s Edge II. Although the exteriors are similar, Water’s Edge II has just 18 suites, compared to 38 at Water’s Edge I. Limiting the number of suites meant North Ridge could answer the demand for large scale, premium floor plans. Residences at Water’s Edge II range in size from 1,300 to 3,021 square feet. The majority are two-bedroom-plus den units, says North Ridge marketing consultant Steve Little. There’s more to Water’s Edge II than incredible views. WATER’S EDGE II BY NORTH RIDGE condo units has proven very appealing. “For example, each kitchen can be custom-designed to the owners’ preference,” says London. No luxury has been overlooked at Water’s Edge II, she adds. Kitchens are beautifully appointed with high-end cabinetry, granite or quartz countertops and premium Jenn-Air stainless steel built-in appliances. Sumptuous master bedrooms offer spa-inspired ensuites and custom walk-in closets. Two show suites are open for viewing at Water’s Edge II, impeccably styled by Edie Riekman, of Interior Designs by Edie. At 1,332 square feet, Suite 245 offers a contemporary “beachhouse” feel with stunning high-gloss contrasting grey and white cabinetry, a waterfall quartz island and painted white maple floors. Suite 143 is a 1,550 square-foot residence boasting classic-modern style. This elegant show suite won the Bridges Award for “Best Décor”, featuring a gorgeous all-white gourmet kitchen with granite countertops. Each show suite reflects the outstanding craftsmanship and attention to detail that has contributed to the success North Ridge has enjoyed in the Saskatoon market for over 30 years. “When you’ve been in business this long, you have your triedand-true trades. Their experience and knowledge definitely shines through in the quality of our homes,” says London. North Ridge is also acclaimed for its pro-active customer service and warran-

ty program. “Before residents even take possession, our quality assurance team has completed inspections at every major stage of construction. We also contact our homeowners four different times during their first year of possession to ensure there are no warranty concerns,” says Little. Although the outstanding style of Water’s Edge II is immediately apparent, what you don’t see is just as important, says Little. North Ridge’s use of advanced sound barrier solutions reduces noise transmission between common walls and floors. Each suite opens onto a spacious window-lined hallway, with no facing units, adding to the building’s serene ambiance. Residents also enjoy the comfort of an advanced mechanical system. “A unique zoned heating and cooling system is in place. Every room in your suite has individual temperature control, controlling the infloor heating, central air and the HRV system,” says Little. The heated underground parkade is another convenience residents enjoy. Each unit comes with two underground parking stalls as well as a storage locker. Over half of the units at Water’s Edge II are sold. Water’s Edge II show suites are open for viewing Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. To view by appointment, call Trish London at (306) 227-7471 or Steve Little at (306) 361-3900. Classics with a twist Susan Parr Postmedia Content Works

T

he look for menswear this spring is classic — with a twist. Literally. Ryan Walter and Rob McNab of Elwood Flynn for Men have seen it all over the years, from the disastrous casual Friday trend to skinny ties to pleated pants. But the tailored and classic styles that Spring and Summer 2016 have ushered in are as easy on the eyes as they are easy to wear. “Blue is the new black,” according to Walter who says a brighter version of old standby, navy, is popular this year. It takes on various hues in the complex fabrications of today. “The lighter weight fabrics perform well with sheen, texture and complexity.” “We have been seeing high twist fabrics for awhile,” says McNab. “They twist the fibre like a spring. It gives more resilience without the weight.” The addition of two per cent or more of a stretchy fibre gives better performance. The trim fit look is still considered fashion forward although the cut is not for everyone. This look features slim-fit skinny pants and tight jackets — almost an hourglass shape. But all shapes and sizes can usually fit a classic shape, especially if they are willing to do some ‘touch-up’ tailoring. It is not often that something doesn’t have to be altered to an offthe-rack suit, according to Walter. Trim or classic, the flat front is the style — no more pleated pants. Pair a new suit with a soft plaid dress shirt and a skinnier (but not skinny) tie. Throw in a complementary but not matchy-matchy handkerchief and some classic shoes and you are off to the board meeting. As for stylish footwear, the newest and most popular colour next to black is a shade of walnut. Check our Justin Trudeau who often chooses a blue suit with walnut shoes. What about the man who wants a more casual look? Men are reinventing what is presentable, according to McNab. Call it dressy casual or week

ON OUR COVER For Elwood Flynn Ltd., staff member Ryan Walter presents a fashion classic with a modern twist, wearing a distinctive French blue jumbo windowpane pure wool sportcoat by Hugo Boss. The sportcoat’s trim silhouette is totally on trend. The rich, deep colours are characteristic of worsted wool. The half-lining ensures it can be worn in comfort throughout the summer. Ryan pairs the jacket with a 100 per cent cotton denim pant by Atelier Gardeur of Germany. Upscale stretch fabrication ensures ease of wear and resilience. Update your wardrobe for spring and summer at Elwood Flynn Ltd., located at 200 Third Avenue South. end; there are lots of looks and great colours. One fun pant alternative is the five pocket denim style with dressy fabrications. Wear this with a sport coat or a shirt and a tie on office days or just a sport shirt for casual events. Denim in different washes and with stretch fibres included goes great with a sport shirt. Pair it with a bright plaid for a memorable look.

In today’s seemingly “anything goes” fashion world, are men still going for the dress-up look a suit gives? Absolutely, say Walter and McNab. First, there are men who don’t usually wear a suit to work but still need something for weddings or special occasions. They buy a suit that they expect to last three to five years. That workhorse suit will perform through job interviews, graduations,

and a New Year’s party if they select a classic fabric and fit. There has been a change in men who wear a suit every day like lawyers or accountants, according to Walter. “It used to be a uniform. Now you almost know what is happening that day by how they are dressed. They dress for what their day is like. One day it might be chinos and golf shirts, the next a suit and tie.”

It used to be that the 20-something young man required guidance when selecting his first suit. “Now they learn from the Internet or old movies. They want a vested suit or they have researched particular details like custom buttonhole threads. They know the classic looks; they don’t want a uniform. They want their clothing to express who they are,” said McNab.

STAND OUT

FROM THE

CROWD Jeannie Armstrong Postmedia Content Works

M

en used to have it easy. Getting dressed for the office used to be a matter of rotating the suits and ties in their wardrobe. On the weekends, golfs shirts and jeans were the go-to choices. Now men’s style choices have become more individualized. There’s no one fashion formula to follow any longer. Rather than opting for conformity and blending in with the crowd, men are seeking ways to stand out by personalizing their attire. While men’s fashion choices have become more complicated, they’re also a lot more fun, says Gord Burgess, owner of Caswells Co., the downtown menswear store that has attired styleconscious men for 105 years in Saskatoon. Burgess says that suit makers like Van Gils, Hugo Boss and Coppley are continuing to favour the blue and grey tones of the previous season for Spring and Summer 2016. “There are a lot of mid- and brighter blues. There are also a lot of the lighter grey tones, like dove grey and silver.” Trim silhouettes continue to dominate men’s suiting, adds Burgess. Jackets are shorter and cut to the shape of the body; pants are tighter in the thigh and tapered in the leg. “It’s a nice clean tapered silhouette. Guys really like the trimmer, more bodyflattering garments,” says Burgess. “We’re also seeing a lot of interest in vested suits.” For those men who are seeking exclusive style, Caswells offers a custom suit program, partnering with Ontario-based Coppley Company. Coppley has perfected the art of suit making in Canada, leading the men’s premier apparel market since 1883. “Custom suiting has become very strong for us. It’s the ultimate way to individualize your look. There’s an expanded selection of fabrics and colour choices. With custom suiting, not only is the cut and fit of the suit made to order, you can choose your buttons, add extra colour details and stitch details. It’s not something you can achieve with fashions off the rack,” says Burgess. Men are also personalizing their suit selections with snazzy dress shirts and colourful ties, pocket squares and socks. “Prints and patterns in shirts are very strong. We are particularly excited about our selection of Eton dress shirts, one of the world’s top shirtmakers out of Sweden. Their shirt collection for this season offers some really great geometric prints which are selling very well for us,” says Burgess.

“One of the advantages of selecting a print shirt is that you have the option of wearing it with or without a tie. It extends the wardrobe to a very nice dressy-casual look.” A smart pocket square is the musthave accessory this season. Although men’s handkerchiefs date back to the days of the Renaissance, the pocket square didn’t become a fashion statement until the 1920s. According to the guide, “The Art of the Pocket Square” by Kamal Jahid, pocket squares were all the rage for the next four decades, worn by working joes and movie stars alike. Different pocket square folds were developed and were associated with the celebrities who adopted them, from James Cagney to Gary Cooper. Lapel pins are also trending in popularity say Burgess, who has brought in some great designs from Toronto’s Dion Neckwear Ltd. Burgess himself was sporting a snazzy ‘bow tie’ lapel pin while being interviewed for this article. Business Insider magazine calls the lapel pin “the next big menswear accessory,” describing them as “a pure expression of style.” Men can choose a pin that speaks to their own personality, from designs that range from sartorial elegance to cheeky fun. Footwear is another way that men can express their individual style, says Burgess. “There’s more emphasis being placed on footwear this season. There are some exciting new looks in shoes, like the monk strap. It’s a shoe that is great for both dress and casual,” says Burgess. In fact, GQ Magazine is calling the monk strap loafer the “dress shoe of the season.” Attracting a lot of attention at Caswells is Johnston & Murphy’s sophisticated take on the sleek slip-on shoe. On the casual side, denim continues to be a fashion staple for men. Here again, men can break out from the crowd by selecting fashion-forward alternatives to the typical jean. “Denims have gone to the darker side, with a lot of the dark dressy blues. We’re also seeing a lot of the coloured denims, including beige and grey tones. There are also stylish fabric options that fall between denims and khakis, including our new line of pinpoint oxford cotton pants,” says Burgess. It’s a great option for weekend wear or workplaces with a business casual dress code. To ensure you stand out from the crowd this season, explore the vast style choices offered at Caswells Co., located downtown at 144 Second Avenue South.

STYLE STATEMENT For Caswells Co., local real estate agent Gregg Bamford expresses his personal style in a slim-fitting sportcoat by Van Gils, a fashion-forward menswear collection from the Netherlands. The light grey tone is on trend this season, featuring a unique birdseye woven fabric. Gregg’s navy floral print slim-fit shirt is by Swedish shirtmaker Eton. Denim perfection is achieved with 7 for All Mankind jeans, also from Caswells. Allen Edmunds loafers in a flattering cognac shade complete Gregg’s standout look. Create your own style statement this season at Caswells Co., located downtown at 144 Second Avenue South.

WHAT DOES YOUR POCKET SQUARE COLOUR SAY ABOUT YOU? What signal are you sending with the colour choice of your pocket square? In the e-book “The Art of the Pocket Square,” the author Kamal Jahid offers this analysis:

BLUE: Cool, calm and somewhat conservative describe you to a T. LIGHT BLUE: You’re approachable, friendly. RED: This bold hue can indicate your strong will and the ability to fight for what you want. BLACK: You’re the professional in the room. PINK: There’s a softer side of your personality that you’re willing to express. GREEN: Green symbolizes growth and prosperity; you’re focused on success. PURPLE: This shade, as well as yellow, suggests creativity. ORANGE: You’re not afraid to make a fashion statement. t’s spring, and we couldn’t be more ready to embrace new fashion trends! One of those trends is fresh new takes on prints and patterns. However, this is a trend that can be a bit complex to pull off, especially if you are blending prints and patterns in a single look. For these looks especially, you want to consider height and body type to achieve the best results and maximum impact. Barry Flynn, owner of Ultimo Euromoda (UE), has been immersed in the fashion world for over 25 years. Talking with Barry Flynn about fashion is an enlightening experience. That could be why UE has remained a leading edge retailer for women’s and men’s fashion in Saskatoon since 1989. Flynn will take the time to help you test patterns and discover what works for you. He’ll also bring a more refined understanding of fashion trends than

you typically find. What you won’t see at UE is the entire store transformed into seasonal trends like you do with a lot of national retailers. What you will see is some very tasteful iterations of current trends, along with an exceptional collection of unique, high quality items, each of which makes a statement. Currently displayed in UE’s front window is a cool floral print top paired with a horizontal striped skirt. The combination is in keeping with the ethos of the store, where patterned combinations maintain that overall sleeker, sexier look. “It works because it’s classy and it’s black and white which always works for many people,” said Flynn, underscoring an important point. When dressing with patterns, colour choice is a critical decision. When you buy something printed, it’s very memorable. “We try to keep our trendy pieces at a lower cost because they’re not something you can

wear twice a week,” says Flynn. This allows shoppers to invest in signature pieces like a great pair of boots or a leather jacket which can be worn over many years. Flynn says the whole athleisure trend is still gaining momentum. Athleisure, so named by the Italians, involves taking fabric traditionally designed for the sporting world and transferring it into the dress world. “It’s just getting bigger and bigger, and probably the most common example is the digitally printed sweatpant jeans,” he says. Diesel jeans was the first company to do it, and now everybody’s got a digital printer, enabling them to print the wash on a jersey sweatpant fabric to make it look exactly like jeans. “It’s not only more durable than the most expensive denim but it’s considerably cheaper per metre. It lasts a long time, it’s extremely comfortable and it looks absolutely real.” A new collection at UE in the ath-

leisure category is ‘Cahill,’ after soccer player Tim Cahill, known as the David Beckham of Australia. Ultimo Euromoda is exceptionally skilled at creating looks that serve a dual purpose. “We offer our clients items that will transfer over from the work look to the weekend look. It adds a little extra value for your purchase,” says Flynn. In men’s suitings, you’ll see a lot of surface texture, making it easier to blend the jacket with jeans after work. “Jeans aren’t clean and smooth, they’ve got some modeling and texture, so if the jacket has surface interest and texture it just looks

Motocross or motor cycle looks continue to be in every collection in fashion for both women and men, and you’ll see a lot of colour blocking. Make a date with fashion Jennifer Jacoby-Smith Postmedia Content Works

rab your sweetie and make a date with fashion at Anthonys Fashions on First Avenue South. In October of last year the longtime men’s clothing store morphed into a fashion mecca for both men and women. Expanded and renovated, Anthonys now offers the same personalized service and latest fashions for both sexes. The overall response has been very positive and word is getting out about the change. Owner Anthony Graham-Cutts says customers are still pleasantly surprised walking in to discover women’s clothing selections as well as men. “It’s a work in progress. Like anything when you start something new that you’re not necessarily known for, it can take a long time for people to get used to the idea,” says Graham-Cutts. For spring, the store will be adding two new brands to their collection: Mexx and Esprit. In the next few weeks the store is expecting more spring and summer merchandise to arrive – including shoes and sandals by Chinese Laundry, jewellery for all your breezy summer outfits, plus scarves and other fun accessories for the complete look. “We’re trying to be that ‘outfit store’, so you can come in and get a purse that matches this and that and accessories that coordinate together,” Graham-Cutts adds. Some of the trends for spring are colourful pastels and navy as the dominant neutral. Navy is also a welcome break for those who dress up daily for their job – it provides the crispness of black without being quite as stark. It also complements many of the bright, fresh colour trends for the new season very well. One of the biggest trends of the season for women are high-waisted pants and skirts. Tops and jackets are also coming in with shorter lengths, but the higher waist-bands (some above the belly button) keep these crops from being midriff-baring. For the men, spring continues the trend of the dress shirt with a hidden funky vibe. The inside placket and inside cuffs are done in a complementary, but bold pattern. This gives men the option of playing it down with a suit jacket and tie or losing the jacket and tie and letting the funky pattern show with rolled cuffs and open collar. One of the brands to showcase this look to great effect is Au Noir. The specific attention to extra details such as button spacing, leather detailing and contrast stitching give a little more punch to the average button-down. This spring has also brought in a surge of new denim looks. Stretch denim provides the look of a dark wash denim with the feel and wearability of a knit – like sweat pants, but way classier. Accessories – pocket squares and tie clips, for example – are giving guys more variety when it comes to special occasion dressing. As for future brands or services, Graham-Cutts says it’s all about being attentive to the customers. “It’s about finding our way and really listening to clients and what they tell us and how we can serve them better.” In the meantime, Graham-Cutts is hoping the women of Saskatoon will come to appreciate all that Anthonys Fashion offers – such as personalized service, purchase tracking to make wardrobe planning a breeze and alterations. Visit Anthonys Fashion on First Avenue South with (or without) your better half to find a complete new look from head to toe.

EXECUTIVE STYLE For Anthonys Fashion, Jadyn Pingue of Masala Model and Talent strikes a pose. With a slate blue Matinique window-check suit and white Polifroni BLU grid plaid dress shirt, Jadyn looks ready to tackle anything the corporate world throws at him. To complement the suit, Jadyn adds a black texture plate buckle belt. A navy tonal floral silk tie by Polifroni and white Au Noir floral pocket square adds a bit of playfulness to the serious ensemble. Strike your own pose after a visit to Anthonys Fashion on First Avenue South for all the latest spring trends.

So take a break from those teetering tight walks and check out a comforting pair of these new heels ... especially the buckled loafers. LACE-UPS: It’s time to tie up some style this spring with all kinds of shoes that lace up around the ankle — the new erogenous zone. These shoes are meant to be shown off. The gladiator sandal is one of the best ways to lace up. But lace-up heels are strutting their stuff, too. Wear them with cropped pants, midi skirts or culottes. FLATFORMS: One of the most comfortable casual shoes on the warm weather horizon. A platform shoe that is flat and fabulous. You’ll feel like you’re walking on a cloud. This athletic-inspired wedge sandal gets a chic twist for spring and summer, and the more colorful the better. High heel mules: Want to dress up your shoe wardrobe this spring? Then slip into one of these pointy-toe mules that have a touch of retro ‘90s. Substitute a pair of these in pink satin for your high heel pumps. SLIDES: These are not your ordinary flip-flops. The newest slides are shoes you can ease right into — from soft leather mules to silk jacquard slippers. (www.massimodutti.com) STRIPED HEELS: So you’re a high heel girl and you feel like you’ve really got to pump it up for work. Well, this spring, the latest update to classic pumps is all about the pattern... stripes. Instant pizzazz to any suit. EMBELLISHED SHOES: From Mary Janes that glitter with metallic beads to slides that are bedazzled and bejeweled to lace-ups dripping with tassels and pom poms, the dressiest shoes this spring will be the star of the style show. Even sneakers get the artistic touch with colorful graphic designs. METALLICS: In silver or gold, bronze or pewter, the metallic leathers (and heels) are taking the shoe show to cutting edge fashion that is right in step with the futuristic trend that is having a fashion moment right now. WHITE SNEAKERS: Forget those high tops. Instead opt for classic sleek white sneakers. They’re turning up not only on city streets but paired with cocktail dresses for evening.

PEEP-TOE BOOTIES: And if white sneaks aren’t quite dressy enough for you, then why not try white peep-toe booties with a hint of laced-up Victoriana? Boots aren’t just for winter anymore. In fact, the open-toed ankle boots can ultimately give your whole outfit a major shot of the cool factor.

ACCESSORIES

MATTER!

After countless hours and shopping trips, you finally found it! At last you’ve got the outfit you’ve been hunting for. You put it on to go out but something seems to be missing. You study yourself in the mirror a little more closely. Hmmm… what you really need are the right accessories. Tobie Hainstock Postmedia Content Works

ACCESSORIES CAPTURE YOUR STYLE When it comes to completing your outfit, accessories offer the ideal finishing touch. According to Sarah Murray of Fashion Capsule Vancouver, accessories allow you to personalize your look. Create your own flair and signature style with accessories that add a spark of personality or a splash of colour. On a budget? Don’t have time to shop? The right accessories can also move last year’s outfit into this year’s trend-conscious wardrobe with just one or two great pieces. Quick and easy, wearing a simple top can act somewhat like a canvas for accessories such as jewellery. This will give you a unique look of your own that captures your personality and individuality. Murray notes that your accessories don’t have to be over the top to make the difference in your ensemble. Well chosen items can complete your look without being overpowering. Remember, the general rule of thumb is to get dressed and then take one thing off before you leave. Other than that, accessorizing is really a matter of expressing yourself. “It’s not about people’s perception, it’s about how you feel,” says Murray. If you love your look and feel comfortable in it, then wear what suits you best.

versatility of stunning accessories. Say farewell to the ‘Boho’ look; you won’t be seeing it as much this summer. With plenty of fabulous colours in the shops such as rose quartz or serenity blue, your jewellery and other accessories will accent those tones wonderfully and create a dynamic look that will turn heads everywhere you go.

ACCESSORY TRENDS FOR THE SEASON Just like your clothing, the style of your accessories will change from season-to-season and year-toyear. Spring 2016 is no exception! When shopping for jewellery, you may notice that bold and chunky pieces have been phased out this spring and summer. Smaller, daintier jewellery like the designs by artists such as Jen Ellis, offer a simple and stylish appeal. If you love chokers, be on the lookout for exciting new designs as they are making a comeback this season. Shoes are still casual for the most part. White runners have been popular for a while and they are not going anywhere. Other shoes will sport a thicker, stacked heel that doesn’t carry as much height as previous seasons. What wardrobe is complete without the latest handbag? Look for smaller, more structured bags as opposed to the larger totes. While still fashionable and functional, these purses make a statement without overshadowing your style. With the Toronto Blue Jays being the team of the season, Murray adds that baseball caps have become a popular fashion statement. Enjoy a great casual look while cheering Canada’s favourite baseball team!

BLONDE, ONLY BETTER! Spring is a season to lighten up your look, and what better way than to go blonde? Visions Salon & Spa does blonde better with the revolutionary new colour system: Pure Blonde by Surface Hair Care. Pure Blonde lightens hair naturally with no aroma, ammonia, paraben, gluten or allergens. Featuring built-in repair ingredients, Pure Blonde actually improves the condition of your hair. Jackie Yochim, manager of Visions Salon & Spa, used Pure Blonde by Surface to achieve her model’s sun-kissed blonde tresses. She then styled her model’s hair in the season’s new ‘deconstructed’ braid, using Surface Swirl Sea Salt Spray and Crave styling paste to give hair extra texture and hold. For the latest innovations in hair, visit Visions Salon & Spa, located on the corner of 1st Avenue and 25th Street.

uns, braids, light, dark, pink, blue, copper… You name it and it’s happening this spring! I am so in love with hair and its creative freedom right now. The Trend collection we created for the 2016 Surface runway is called Freedom. Freedom is exactly that… let your hair down and feel the wind, embrace messy styles and work with your natural waves. Swirl Sea Salt Spray is our go-to product at Visions Salon and Spa right now. Mist it into damp hair for light texture and hold. For loads of volume and texture, mist into dry hair and scrunch. The thing about this product is that while it gives that dry, nocrunch texture, it is actually nourishing for your hair. Most sea salt sprays are drying and damaging. Swirl is different; you can use it all summer long and keep your hair in great condition. Plus, you’ll love the soft clean scent of ginger in your hair. For ultra-conditioning, a mist of Bassu shine spray gives the hair added sheen and a touch of extra moisture to

resist any frizz. Braids and buns are super hot right now; simply hop on YouTube and you can watch a quick and easy tutorial demonstrating how to whip your hair into a fun and effortless look. The beauty is that these braids and buns are deconstructed, so you don’t need to get it perfect. To perfect your ’do, the only thing you need in your tool box is our magical styling paste called Crave. Work it into dry hair and keep a bit on your hands while you are working your hair into its style. Crave styling paste gives hair extra grip and texture so that you have more control over your wild strands. It isn’t greasy and is naturally neutral in sheen so it doesn’t weigh down your hair or make it super shiny. The newest addition to Visions is our Pure Blonde by Surface. It is a new product that is revolutionizing the hair industry to lighten hair naturally with no aroma, ammonia, dust, parabens, gluten or allergens. This spring, we have been crazy busy with balayage blondes. Balayage is the

chic freehand colour painting technique originally from France. Thanks to our Pure Blonde product, not only is the hair not damaged after the colour treatment, in many cases, the hair is in better condition! Pure Blonde has built-in repair while lightening the hair. The condition of our guests’ hair is mind blowing. Our team at Visions is currently working to do a huge photoshoot for Surface Hair that will be featured in marketing and magazines across North America. They are the strongest colourists I know and I cannot express how lucky we are to have them working here in our community. If you haven’t been for colour at Visions treat yourself this season! Jackie Yochim manages and operates her family business Visions Salon and Spa. She also works in Research and Development for Surface Hair, collaborating with Surface Hair’s international directors to create tomorrow’s trends and enhance today’s fashion. Stylists at Visions Salon and Spa are always taking new guests. For an appointment, call (306) 244-4443. SAS00349048_1_1
