In 1932-33, millions of Ukrainians were purposely starved to death by the Soviet regime led by Joseph Stalin. To break the back of “nationalist” resistance to Soviet power, an ancient nation was condemned to death by artificial famine.

All grain and foodstuffs were forcibly seized.

The territory of Soviet Ukraine and the predominantly Ukrainian-populated Kuban region of the Northern Caucasus (Soviet Russia) were isolated by armed

units, so that people could not go in search of food to the neighbouring regions where it was more readily available. In little more than a year one-quarter of the population of Soviet Ukraine perished. The result was the Ukrainian genocide of 1932-33, known in Ukrainian as the Holodomor (from holod – famine, and moryty – to kill). In November of each year, people worldwide honour the victims of this crime against humanity.

Wheat, the symbol of life, prosperity and spiritual wealth, is the grain that, for centuries, has been associated with the livelihood of many nations. During the Ukrainian Holodomor-Famine Genocide of 1932-33, however, it became a weapon of genocide orchestrated to destroy the very fabric of the Ukrainian nation.

On August 7, 1932, Joseph Stalin and his communist regime authored a law, which sentenced to death or 10 years’ imprisonment anyone accused of the misappropriation of collective farm property. This law led to mass arrests and executions as hungry Ukrainians searched for the smallest scraps of food. Even children caught picking handfuls of grain from fields were

convicted. The law became known as the “Law of Five Ears of Grain.”

The Ukrainian World Congress adopted this logo as the international logo for the commemoration of the 85th anniversary of the Ukrainian Holodomor-Famine Genocide, 1932-33. Its design symbolizes the law of “Five Ears of Grain” by depicting five stalks of wheat delicately bound with a black ribbon. The logo will continue to serve as a reminder of the devastation characterized by the law, as well as the Ukrainian nation’s determination to live and prosper.

On May 7, 2008, Saskatchewan became the first province in Canada to recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide through the passage of Bill 40: An Act to Recognize the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor).

Introduced by Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz with the unanimous support of MLAs from both the Government and Official Opposition Bill 40 has enshrined the fourth Saturday in November in each year as “Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day” for the purposes of recognizing the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) of 193233 and for the reflection on the lessons to be learned from that event.

HOLODOMOR STATUE ON LEGISLATURE GROUNDS The statue, entitled “Bitter Memories of Childhood”, stands on the grounds of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building on the banks of Wascana Lake.

This haunting statue is of a young girl holding a handful of wheat stalks. It is dedicated to the most vulnerable victims of starvation – children. This Regina replica is cast from the same mold as the original located at Ukraine’s National Holodomor Memorial in Kyiv. The statue is the work of Ukrainian sculptor Petro Drozdovskyi.

The project was initiated by the late Edward Lysyk of Regina. He envisioned the statue as a centrepiece in Regina’s Wascana Park and felt it would assist others to learn about the Holodomor Ukrainian Famine-Genocide. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress - Regina Branch worked with

the Government of Saskatchewan to make this important project happen. It was dedicated on May 12, 2015.

During the dedication ceremony, those in attendance were moved by the words of Gregory Akulov, son of parents who survived the Holodomor, who recounted the experiences of his parents about what it was like to live during those dark times.

The Ukrainian community of Saskatchewan is very appreciative of the support of the Saskatchewan government to make this initiative become a reality in an important location on the Legislative grounds.

The Wascana Centre Authority is also acknowledged for their assistance in getting the statue in place.

7 серпня 1932 року Йосип Сталін та його комуністичний режим видали закон, що засуджував кожну людину, звинувачену в розкраданні колгоспної власності, до смертної кари або 10 років позбавлення волі. Цей закон привів до масових арештів і розстрілів голодуючих українців, які у

жаданні вижити шукали залишки їжі. І навіть дітей, пійманих зі жменею підібраного на полі зерна, було засуджено. Цей закон став відомим, як закон «про п’ять колосків». Heightening Awareness of the Holodomor

Studying the Holodomor is especially relevant today as we strive to educate the world about different modes of genocide and human rights abuses in order to prevent future horrific acts against humanity. It is important in this 85th year to not only commemorate those who perished in the Soviet genocide, but to remind ourselves of the value of speaking out and standing up for those victims whose voices cannot be heard.

The word Holodomor may not be front and centre for most people when they delve into the history books but there are significant lessons to be learned from this 20th century tragedy. There is a determined worldwide effort to heighten awareness of the Holodomor. In Saskatchewan, this is led by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan.

Former education consultants with the Ministry of Education, Nadia Prokopchuk and George Zerebecky, developed a Holodomor chapter for the educational website Voices Into Action (www.voicesintoaction. ca) through UCC Saskatchewan’s Holodomor Awareness and Education Committee. The site is hosted by the Canadian organization FAST (Fighting

Antisemitism Together). Former principal David Katzman was involved as the Saskatchewan and Manitoba Coordinator for FAST.

Katzman, who has done extensive research on genocide, said that the Holodomor is yet another example where every genocide brings with it the undeniable truth that some will profit from the suffering and so it is important to be vigilant or we will see it repeated again all too soon.

More than 40 jurisdictions globally, including Canada and Saskatchewan, have officially condemned the Holodomor and/ or recognized it as genocide.

During Soviet times, any mention of the Ukrainian Famine was considered a crime against the state. As a result, Soviet school texts and history books omitted mention of this dark period. Much effort had even gone into covering up the destruction of entire villages and the great loss of life.

We have to look at the bold steps taken by Canada to right historical wrongs including through the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Students across Canada are learning about residential schools.

Aside from now having access to previously hidden government documents and statistical data, there are also survivors willing to offer first-hand experiences, some of which have been incorporated into the Holodomor chapter within Voices Into Action.

The Government of Saskatchewan has played a pivotal role in Holodomor Awareness. In 2008, Saskatchewan became the first

A travelling mobile classroom, the Holodomor Bus, will again be available to schools in Saskatchewan in the spring of 2019. The Holodomor National Awareness Tour is a project of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, supported by the Government of Canada to raise awareness about the Holodomor and help build a strong, democratic, diverse and tolerant society in Canada.

“Many will come away wondering why they haven’t heard of this before or why this tragic genocide has been omitted from historical studies for so long. Student interest and curiosity will definitely be piqued by what they see in the mobile classroom and they will be able to learn more about the Holodomor and other genocides by accessing information within Voices Into Action. In fact, all of the units presented in Voices Into Action help students to focus on ways that we can fight atrocities against humanity, including anti-Semitism, discrimination and all other forms of racism.

Unfortunately, this is still an issue in our world.”

The 450-square-foot mobile classroom provides a powerful experience that goes beyond a textbook. This is largely due to the use of state-of-the-art technology.

The space allows 34 visitors to participate in a 60-minute facilitator-led educational experience that includes audiovisual presentations on a 28-foot video wall and the use of individual tablets.

This Holodomor Memorial was installed in downtown North Battleford in 2014.

A monument in remembrance of the millions who perished in the 1932-33 Holodomor Famine-Genocide was installed in 2014 on the Riverview Walk in downtown North Battleford. The project was undertaken in 2008 by the Battlefords Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Council (President Paul Kardynal). The monument’s design is international in scope and is a replica of the Monument to the Victims of the 1932-33 Famine (Holodomor), which stands in St. Michael Square in central Kyiv, Ukraine. The monument is made of steel and is approximately 3 metres (10 ft.) tall and 1.5 metres (5 ft.) wide.

Пам’ятник на спомин про мільйони людей, які загинули у 1932-33 рр. в Україні в часи голодомору-геноциду був встановлений в 2014 році в центрі міста Норт-Бетлфорд, на Риверв’ю набережній. Проект був розпочатий в 2008 році Радою українсько-канадської культури у Бетлфордах (президент Павло Кардинал). Дизайн пам’ятника є у повному розумінні міжнародним, оскільки він - репліка Пам’ятного знаку жертвам Голодомору 1932-22 років розташованого на Михайлівській площі в центрі Києва, в Україні. Пам’ятник був споруджений у 2008 році Василем Поліщуком, котрий іммігрував до Канади у 2007 році. Допомагав йому в роботі Сергій Мурай. Пам’ятник виконаний зі стальної плити близько 3 метрів (10 футів) висотою і 1.5 метра (5 футів) шириною.
