STYLE WEEK
2017
BY SHARON MOSLEY Creators.com
“I
n olden days, a glimpse of stocking was looked on as shocking. But now, God knows, anything goes!” Cole Porter may have written the song, “Anything Goes” way back in 1934, and there still may be very few fashion trends that shock us anymore, but there will always be something new to wear every time the seasons change. Here is a quick look at 10 of the trends you’ll get a kick out of this fall. Anything red. From pale pinks to bold burgundies, the reds have it for the year ahead. Pick your best shade and wear it from head to toe. Or wear a brilliant pop of red as an accent in a special accessory like a ladylike handbag or a thigh-high pair of statement boots. Anything velvet. Get ready to get glamorous in one of the most luxurious trends there is...soft, sumptuous velvet is going for the gold this fall. Start searching for your favourite velvet holiday jacket now. Mine is going to be an inky teal blue...or maybe a crimson red. Anything menswear. Checks, houndstooth, herringbones and tweeds are tailored to perfection in sharp coats, suits and jackets. Team these menswear classics with frilly Victorian blouses and you’ve got the latest look. Anything leather. Leather leggings. Leather trenchcoats. Leather
moto jackets. The tough get going this fall, any time of day or night. Invest in a high-quality classic piece, and you’ll wear it for years. Anything shiny. Glimmer and glow in metallic eyeshadows, liquid lip glosses, disco sequined dresses or even lacquered leather boots and bags. Anything floral. The flowers are blooming profusely this fall in dark colourful prints of autumn’s warm hues. Check out the bohemian-inspired maxi dresses. Anything faux fur. Cozy is the buzz word, and faux is the real way to go as all things wild and wooly spring off the runway and into our coat closets. Anything lingerie. Fashion slinks out of the boudoir even for fall with silk slip dresses, sheer blouses, pajamas, slipper slides and kimono robes layering up to hit the streets. Anything handcrafted. The artsand-crafts movement is going strong in fashion, with mismatched prints, patchwork, prairie dresses and fringe making a creative, artistic splash in a big way. This is a trend only for the most dedicated fashionista who doesn’t mind standing out in the crowd. Anything military. Salute this fall in official style with olive drab jackets, camo coats and lug-soled boots. Soften it all up with ruffled blouses or satin tank tops. And if anything goes... then you can sing your own kind of song and come up with your own fashion trends. They just might be a hit. © CREATORS.COM

AUTUMN is
AWESOME
BY JENNIFER JACOBY-SMITH
Autumn is colour A splash of gold has hit the trees outside, and inside autumn has brought a bumper crop of fall colours to Lawson Heights Mall, with a mix of rich, velvety tones like purple, burgundy, navy, wine, emerald and caramel. “We’re definitely seeing the classic fall colours,” notes marketing director Megan Powell, “Which is nice, since they all mix together so well.” Other colours making an appearance are black, white and mustard. As well, Powell notes a few surprising hues are popping up in stores. Unexpected pastels in pink and blue seemed to have stayed over from spring. “It’s a nice complement to the jewel tones,” notes Powell.
break up the ho-hum darker tones of blazers or skirts for the office. They can mix and match easily whether you’re headed to the office or out for drinks with friends. There are plenty of great finds at Lawson Heights Mall and plenty of styles and sizes to choose from. “We have fashion for everyone from age tweens and up. And we have all sizes as well. We have a few stores that offer plus sizes or extended sizes as they call them,” says Powell. Recently, Lawson Heights Mall saw a former retailer relocate and renovate. Suzy Shier took over the former Warehouse One location, while Warehouse One moved to freshly renovated space. This new Suzy Shier location is the only one in Saskatoon. There are still more changes coming to the Mall in the next year. Scotia

Bank is building a stand-alone location in the parking lot, while Canada Safeway will relocate to the renovated space on the west end of the mall. Motion Fitness will then move into the current Safeway location. Lawson Heights Mall also offers the opportunity to shop and dine with the addition of Browns Socialhouse opening this summer and Famoso last year. “You have the opportunity to choose great sit-down restaurants and we always have the indulgent food court choices as well,” notes Powell. The food court also has some healthier choices such as Booster Juice. If you’re just looking for a quick coffee, there’s always Starbucks in the mall, and Tim Horton’s in the parking lot. It’s the perfect combo for shopping and relaxing this fall.
Autumn is texture Every fall it seems the stores fill with all kinds of textures. Chunky knits, complicated tweeds, leather and suede – whether faux or real – are back. And these textures are enjoying some unusual applications. You can find suede ball caps, skirts, not to mention suede accents on jackets or leggings. And autumn wouldn’t be complete without the soft flannel plaid shirts in a variety of colours. It’s the go-to look when comfort is required – for a weekend of relaxing or hanging out with friends.
Autumn is layers There’s no getting away from the need for warm luscious layers this fall. There are so many attractive and flattering options. A leather jacket with a snappy scarf, a long vest over a knit legging, or a poncho over a new pair of kicks, layers will bring warmth, colour and texture to all your fall outfits. “We’re seeing a lot of the camisoles, but they’re coming out with cute little criss-cross details at the neck,” says Powell. “Everyone has a camisole in their closet, but this is a nice change and a new detail this year.” Powell says pumping up your fall wardrobe should include three must-haves. She suggests a piece of leather or suede and a good scarf for layering.
Autumn is florals Powell also suggests adding something floral to your fall wardrobe. “We’re seeing lots of florals, whether that’s a blouse or a pant or a shoe.” Flower prints are new for a fall trend and make a fun addition to

8 easy ways to refresh your wardrobe BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG
F
eel like you’ve been in a fashion rut the past few seasons? Have your wardrobe purchases this year been repeats of pieces already in your closet? When was the last time someone complimented you on what you’re wearing, and asked: “Is that new?” It’s a fashion dilemma we all experience. Kajoo Kamal, founder of Klassique Designs in Scotia Centre, says this is the season to shake up your wardrobe and refresh your style. “For me, there are some significantly different looks for Fall/Winter than we’ve had in a few seasons. It’s time for something new,” says Kamal. “It’s a season of new proportions, bold colour, graphic design and comfort.” For over 35 years, Kamal has kept her finger on the pulse of changing style trends, bringing in exciting looks from leading Canadian and international designers to her Scotia Centre Boutique. It’s no wonder that iconic Canadian designer Simon Chang calls Kamal “one of the sharpest buyers” in North America. What’s on her “must-have” list for Fall/Winter?
1. THE NEW TROUSER “We’re seeing a return of the trouser in some of the better Canadian lines and the European lines. It’s a slim pant, a little more substantial than the leggings that have been around for so long,” says Kamal. Who’s doing it best? Kamal loves the new tailored trousers and slim pants by designers Iris Setlakwe, Ecla and Norma Kamali. Menswear-inspired pin-striped pants are featured by a number of designers this season, including several iterations by Simon Chang.
2. SWEATER WEATHER “There are such interesting sweaters this season. There are longer graphic sweaters. The cut is a bit fuller and not so clingy. We’re moving away from the slinky knits. There’s a big emphasis on natural fibres, including cotton knits. The fabrics are more weighted and hang better on the body,” says Kamal. This season’s sweater options include cowls and turtlenecks, as well as multi-layered one-piece sweaters. “Capes and capelets are big. There are exciting sleeve treatments, including bell sleeves and the return of the dolman sleeve,” says Kamal. Among the
standout sweaters at Klassique are Hilary Radley’s eye-catching onesleeved capelet, combining two hot trends in one.
it inside out for a totally different look. The seams are finished to perfection. They are wonderful for travelling,” says Kamal.
3. SOPHISTICATED SKIRTS
5. PANT SUITS
“Longer, fuller skirts are back,” says Kamal. “We’ve brought in a gorgeous Norma Kamali bold windowpane check skirt that extends mid-calf but has two slits in the front, to show off a great boot and a bit of leg. We also have some high-waisted tailored pencil skirts that look fabulous with a tucked-in blouse or floaty top.”
4. TRANSFORMERS What better way to infuse excitement into your wardrobe and make the most of your fashion dollars than with this season’s “transformers”? “There is a remarkable number of reversible dresses, coats and wraps this season that offer two looks in one,” says Kamal. “We’re carrying a dress line by Eroke, an Italian fashion house. These amazing dresses are completely reversible, with a different coloured print inside and out. Wear it one way one day; then turn
All the top designers were trotting out pant suits during Fall Fashion Week, from Alexander McQueen to Gucci. This season’s fresh take on the pant suit includes patterned jackets with matching trousers. “They’re gorgeous when they’re on. What’s nice about it is you can begin with the jacket and trouser, add a pencil skirt for a different look, or team the trouser with a different jacket. You can put together all different kinds of looks with just a few pieces,” says Kamal.
6. DENIM DRAMA “Everything works back to denim this season,” says Kamal. “Even in suiting, women want pieces that they can pair with denim for casual wear.” Embellished denim is one of the season’s hottest trends and no one captures this artisan look better than Simon Chang. For true diva style, Kamal pairs Simon Chang’s embroidered jeans with his uber-glamourous gold brocade evening coat.
7. COAT CHECK Winter coats get a real workout in Saskatchewan. It doesn’t take too many seasons before your go-to winter coat looks shabby and dated. The good news is there are so many exciting new designs to choose from this season. “ There are lots of stunning coats this season. The silhouettes are changing. They’re still fitted, but we’re moving to a more relaxed cut. I think it’s a nice change. The more generous silhouette is easier to wear over top of jackets or sweaters with dolman sleeves. The finishings are beautiful,” says Kamal.
8. GLAMOUR GALORE Klassique Designs is known across western Canada for its divine selection of evening wear, and this season is no exception. “Evening wear this season is very glamourous, but very sophisticated. We’ve got everything from ball gowns to sleek beaded sheaths. Many of the gowns have full skirts; pockets are very popular. The fabrics are richer, with a heavier hand, which is flattering to every figure type,” says Kamal.

ummer often seems too short in Saskatchewan but what comes next is beautiful – it is boot season! Fall fashion is upon us and it is better than ever. Now’s the time to put away those sandals and sneakers and get ready for all of the gorgeous boots Traxx Footwear has to offer. The number one fashion rule to remember for fall 2017 is: black is boring. Bordeaux, navy, brandy and a variety of purple tones are top choices
for the changing season. New styles for both men and women are arriving daily from brands such as Miz Mooz, MJUS, A.S. 98, Josef Siebel, Vionic and many more. Ankle boots are popping up all over the footwear scene. A low cut option is great to make the transition between seasons; ankle boots can be paired with dresses or cropped pants and then shift into cooler weather outfit selections such as denim or leggings. Low cut styles are not the only option for fall; Traxx has everything from shoes to tall boots. For any boot, short or tall, it is all in the

PROPER FIT IS KEY TO COMFORT

o you try to hold winter at bay by keeping your winter boots packed away until the first snowstorm hits? Although denying the inevitable onset of our harshest season may give you a psychological lift, experts say it’s important to get your winter footwear out and thoroughly checked over well before winter arrives with a fury. “Canadian winters are tough— frigid temperatures, ice-covered paths and endless snow and slush can cause serious harm unless you
are prepared,” explains Peter Morcom, president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada and a Canadian certified pedorthist. “A quality pair of lined, properly fitted winter boots is essential for winter in Canada.” Although he doesn’t recommend one style or brand of boots, Morcom says these seven tips will help ensure you are well-equipped for everything winter has in store. 1. Winter footwear doesn’t last indefinitely, typically only one to three seasons. If you are using the same pair
details. Laser cutting, hand-rubbed leather, rivets, zippers and embellishments are subtle details that make all the difference. For chillier autumn temperatures step into tall boots; faux fur and wedge heels make an ultimate pairing with sweaters, leggings and scarves. Traxx Footwear is 9,000 square feet of shoe paradise with over 200 brands sourced from around the globe. Highly qualified staff members are available to help you find the perfect style and fit you crave for fall. If you are not able to make it into of boots as last winter, inspect them closely to make sure there are no rips or cracks that could allow water to permeate. 2. Traction is key. To minimize slipping, select footwear that has a more aggressive tread and a sole made with softer materials such as rubber. If you have balance issues and are concerned about falling, buy cleats that stretch over your boots for extra traction. 3. Only buy footwear that is waterproof, and wear moisture-wicking socks to further protect your feet. Wet feet increase the risk of frostbite and fungal or bacterial infection. 4. Make sure your boots fit properly. Your feet can change size over time and footwear sizes differ from style to style, so have your feet measured every time and only buy boots that feel comfortable the first time you try them on. 5. If you spend a lot of time outside, choose a pair of boots with a colder temperature range than you need as they will provide you with extra comfort and protection. 6. Don’t buy boots that aren’t supportive. Some fashionable sheepskin styles of boots look cozy and warm but they won’t provide the support your feet and lower limbs require. Stylish, leather-heeled boots should be kept for special occasions. 7. Don’t ask your children to wear hand-me-down boots or buy boots with room for them to grow. Boots that are too big or too small will chafe or squish their toes, which will cause blisters and rubs. Find more information at pedorthic. ca. (News Canada)

ou only have to turn on the TV or flip through any fashion magazine to be bombarded with ads for beauty products promising brighter, clearer, youngerlooking skin. How many times have you purchased a skin care product, only to realize a few weeks later, that it didn’t live up to its promises? Consumers are right to be sceptical. In November 2014, The Journal of Global Fashion Marketing analyzed cosmetics claims made in fashion magazine ads and found that only 18 per cent of those claims were credible. Does this mean that you should give up on your quest for healthy skin? Dr. Coby Demkiw-Bartel, a Saskatoon family physician and founder of “TheSheDoc.com”, spent over 20 years doing research to find solutions to her own skin problems. “My skin care journey started about 30 years ago. I had perfect skin as a teenager, but in my 20s, I started to experience significant problems. I had quite dramatic acne, which resulted in hyperpigmentation. As the decades went by, the aging issues started,” says Dr. Demkiw-Bartel. She began her health care career, first as a laboratory technologist, then as a pharmacist. She then continued on to medical school to become a family physician. “These disciplines uniquely prepared me for the research I have undertaken to find effective products and treatments for skin care issues. That research has become my passion,” says Dr. Demkiw-Bartel. She notes that her experience as a pharmacist gave her unique insight into the ingredients used in skin care products. Dermatology was a particular interest during her years in medical school. “I spent much of my elective time with the dermatologist at the hospital and on related research projects to expand my knowledge.”
The She Doc: Dr. Coby DemkiwBartel, CCFP, MD, BSP, BA, RT. (SUPPLIED PHOTO)
By the time she had established her family practice in Saskatoon, Dr. Demkiw-Bartel estimates she had personally tried and investigated over 75 lines of skin care products. “Nothing really ever worked. Even prescription items were very harsh, problematic in some way or just not efficacious.” Thirteen years ago, she was introduced to a Canadian skin optimizing system. The medical grade skin care line is only available through physicians. “I’d never heard of this company before but I was ready to try it. Within six weeks there was such a visible difference, my patients were asking, ‘What are you doing with your face?’ I was never so thrilled to find something that actually worked,” says Dr. Demkiw-Bartel. Dr. Demkiw-Bartel has continued her research, identifying medical grade skin care products she feels really work and live up to their claims. Her investigative process is meticulous. “I first assess the list of ingredients ensuring they contain sciencebased active ingredients in an appropriate concentration and delivery system and are free from common undesirable allergens, irritants and sensitizers. “I discovered that a lot of my problems as well as my patients were related to allergies and irritants, such as formaldehyde and sulfates, used as preservatives in many cosmetic lines. Products that pass this step then move to trial.” She says, “Each product must achieve visible benefits and results to then be recommended by me. Thus far, over 75 lines of
products have undergone this process and what has resulted is a select collection of products that have been researched and tested by the physician, therefore revealing an elevated level of acceptance, quality and observed results that she finds worthy of recommending in her custom consultations. “I’ve identified the ‘stars’ from different lines that I’ve found really work and really get results,” she says. Dr. Demkiw-Bartel has identified products that are useful for treating dull skin, acne/ acne scarring, aging skin, photo (sun)-damaged skin, fine lines/ wrinkles, sensitive skin, eczema, rosacea and melasma/hyperpigmentation (brown spots). “These medical grade skin care products are also for people who may not have these problems but desire healthy skin and want to be proactive and preventative in taking care of it,” says Dr. Demkiw-Bartel. Among those ‘stars’ is a physician-supervised product called Retamax, a skin rejuvenation product from ZO Medical, which blends a potent concentration of retinol with plant stem cell antioxidants and biomimetic proteins in a micronized emulsion system for rapid delivery of ingredients. “When people go on Retamax, they are floored by the difference. There’s such a significant efficacy to it and compared to other retinols, it’s amazing,” she says. Because Retamax is a medicalgrade product with a very unique delivery system, it contains a very potent concentration of retinol as an active ingredient that can’t be compared to overthe-counter products found in drug stores or department stores. Those commercial brands must comply with Health Canada restrictions, limiting the amount of active ingredients in products sold over-the-counter. To share the knowledge and experience she has gleaned from her decades of research and product testing, and in response to many requests from her patients, Dr. Demkiw-Bartel decided to offer skin care consultations, treatments and pro-
cedures, independent from her family medical practice. Visiting Dr. Demkiw-Bartel’s website, “TheSheDoc.com” offers extensive details about the skin care services and products that are available. The first step is a complimentary skin care consultation, where Dr. Demkiw-Bartel identifies each patient’s skin care goals. “We’ll select a time to get together and do a custom personal consultation,” says Dr. Demkiw-Bartel. “After collecting the necessary information, I create a skin care plan that is based on the patient’s needs, desires and goals,” she says. “I take into consideration your preferences regarding types of products or treatments, as well as the amount of time and money you want to invest in your skin care program. “I’ll provide the patient with the suggested program. There’s no obligation to purchase a thing. You can go home and think about it, go on the website
ZO® Skin Health products can achieve dramatic results for skin conditions including melasma, pigmentation, acne, aging, rosacea and sun damage. (SUPPLIED PHOTO)
and read more about the products. When you’re ready to go ahead, we can proceed.” Dr. Demkiw-Bartel does all of the consultations and treatments herself. “It’s my professional preference. Being hands-
on allows me to ensure that the patient is receiving the optimum care and results.” To begin your own journey to healthier, happier skin, visit www.TheSheDoc.com or email: info@theshedoc.com.

ust because fall means going back to routine, does not mean your fall fashion look has to be routine also. Elwood Flynn for Men offers three basic looks this autumn that any man can style hundreds of different ways depending on his needs and lifestyle. And with more than 100 years of fashion experience among them, Elwood Flynn, Rob McNab and Ryan Walter know just how to put them together so you look great every time. Changing work environments mean many offices no longer require male staffers to wear a suit every day. Probably the most basic business outfit for most men is a sport coat, pants, shirt and tie. “A sport coat can take you almost anywhere,” according to McNab. For the office, team that sports coat with dress pants, a shirt and tie. With jeans, a sweater, and maybe even a scarf, that same jacket takes you through the weekend and can even act as outwear on cool days. McNab points to a modern classic Canadian-made, Italian wool sports jacket in a brown and grey muted plaid. This one is custom designed but many are available off the rack. He pairs the jacket with a blue soft check shirt, blue patterned tie, chocolate pants, cognac belt and shoes. The latter colour for shoes became even more popular in the last couple of years when Justin Trudeau wore a pair to his swearing in. Sport coat options range from an informal soft shoulder unlined blazer to patch pockets with a skeleton lining. For a formal business office or dressier events, a suit is still the top choice and blue still the most important colour. This season, the blues are in multiple shades and patterns from navy to glen check to bird’s eye to neat patterns. The classic look is still two-button with a side vent and notched lapel. One variation seen in a few suits is a “peaked lapel”, one in which the lower part of the lapel is longer. The cut is still trim but there are fuller options for men who prefer them. Fall and winter fabrics show more texture and a bit heavier weight, including complex colourations and even flannels. The last look is weekend casual but again the lines blur between workday and weekend. McNab and Walter show Germanmade Braxx and Gardeur pants that work as well to wear watching the kids’ soccer game as they do with a jacket in most offices. These versatile jeans are a wardrobe staple, making investment dressing a great option. Fabricated of a cotton blend with Elastane they have a soft hand. The five pocket jean fit is one that most men are comfortable wearing, according to McNab. Colour choices are basics like black, taupe and khaki, to the more adventuresome such as bordeaux, ginger or grey patterned. Top them with a blazer during the week or a zippered cardigan for the weekend. Look for sweaters in rich autumn hues like plum, tobacco, charcoal or navy. Flynn jokes about an old aphorism, “Never wear a white shirt before five p.m.” And with all the options in shirt colours and patterns, finding a choice other than white should never be a problem. Brands like Ingram and Viyella offer a multitude of choices, mainly in cotton. Complete a fall winter look, and keep warm at the same time, with a coat. A stroller length or car coat is still the most popular, and works with trimmer clothing. Wherever life takes you, Elwood Flynn for Men will take you there in outstanding style. Drop into their downtown store at 200 Third Avenue South to see the latest looks for Fall and Winter.

STYLE WEEK 2017
BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG

re you content to merely blend in or are you seeking to stand out in the work-
place? Men, now more than ever, are selecting their attire with greater care and attention to detail. They’re also spending significantly more than women on fashion – 13 per cent more – according to the recent Men’s Shopping Report generated by retail industry analysts, The Boutique@Ogilvy. And all predictors point to menswear sales continuing to outpace womenswear in the seasons ahead. What are style-conscious men looking for in their wardrobe choices? I posed this question to Gord Burgess, owner of Caswells Co. Ltd. Locally owned, Caswells has been known as “THE store for men” for the past 106 years. Even in offices where a more casual culture prevails, Burgess says men are upping their style game. “That’s especially true of the younger market. They’re the ones who are dressing up now. And with the move three years ago to our larger, streetfront location on Second Avenue, our younger clientele has really expanded.” Burgess says “Suits and sport coats are still very strong for us. Tailored clothing is really the key to our business.” For the Fall/Winter season ahead, menswear designers continue to favour trim-fitting suits. The good news is that slim-cut silhouettes have relaxed slightly, says Burgess. “In some collections, the slim cuts had narrowed to the point where it was a little too extreme. Now it’s eased just a touch to add a little comfort to the trim fit. It’s still a very flattering fit, but more wearable.” The secret to a great suit lies in the fit. “Especially with the trimmer silhouettes, the fit is a lot more important than when the garments were looser. As a result, we’re seeing significant increases in our custom suit business. Custom clothing is very strong right now – not just in our store, but across Canada and the U.S.,” says Burgess. “For our custom suiting, we deal primarily with Coppleys, one of the top Canadian menswear suppliers out of Hamilton, Ontario.” Coppleys is renowned for their outstanding selection of fabrics and meticulous workmanship. “They have about 400 different fabrics to choose from. We also bring in some special fabric books from Holland & Sherry, one of the world’s top fabric mills located in England. Their distribution is quite exclusive,” says Burgess. With a custom suit, the customer has a choice of fabric, lapel style, linings, buttons and top stitching. “You can choose from one-, two- or three-button jackets. You can tailor the garment the way you want,” says Burgess. “The main thing is the fit. A custom suit really guarantees a proper tailored fit. There are many men who cannot fit off-the-rack properly without extreme alterations.” Men may be surprised to discover that a custom suit does not cost a whole lot more than an off-the-rack suit – both in dollars and wait times. “It’s not a substantial increase over off-the-rack suits. On average, it’s about 20 per cent more. For someone who is looking for something that’s a little bit different and unique, as well as a perfect fit, a custom suit is well within reason,” says Burgess. Coppley has also enhanced its operations to reduce the turn-around time on its custom suit orders. “Years ago, it used to take four to six weeks to receive a custom suit. Now they can deliver the completed suit to us
in about two to three weeks,” says Burgess. The custom suit experience begins with a fitting by the experts at Caswells. “It takes about 20 minutes to do a proper set of measurements. Those records are kept on file for the next time a person wants to order,” he adds. To round out men’s wardrobe choices for the Fall/Winter season, Caswells has brought in a great selection of sweaters. “There’s a big trend towards sweaters this season; they really seem to be taking off again. We’re showing v-necks, crew necks, turtlenecks, some dressier pullovers. It’s a great way to personalize your look through layering and to add colour,” says Burgess. Denim continues to be a wardrobe staple for the season ahead, often paired with the latest textured sport coats. “When worn with sport coats, denim choices should be cleaner, darker and dressier. There should be less whiskering and fading, and a cleaner leg.” Caswells also has a great selection of fashion footwear from leading designers like Johnson & Murphy, Lloyds from Germany and Bugatti out of Europe. “Boots are coming on strong this fall for men. There are some nice dress boots, with a side zip or lace ties. The key colour is still the British tans, but we’re also showing a variety of grey and navy.” In outerwear, the popular Canada Goose line has been a best seller for Caswells. In addition to the traditional line of Canada Goose parkas and jackets, Caswells is excited to unveil the new Canada Goose Black Label collection. “It’s a collection that is exclusive to the better menswear stores. The Black Label line is distinguished by its black crest. It’s more tonal, making it slightly dressier,” says Burgess. DRESS LIKE THE BOSS Men are selecting their attire with greater attention to detail than ever before, says Gord Burgess, owner of Caswells Co. Ltd. Here, Mike Bondarenko with She Modelling, shows off the season’s popular slim fit silhouette by Hugo Boss. Blues and greys continue to dominate menswear collections this season, as seen in this Hugo Boss suit of iridescent mid-sapphire blue Angelico wool. To complete Mike’s look, Caswells selects an Egyptian cotton white shirt with blue geometric pattern by Eton of Sweden and an Italian silk tie by Dion Canada. Transform your look with this season’s latest scarves BY SHARON MOSLEY Creators Syndicate

hey may be the last thing you put on, but scarves can instantly transform anything you wear. Take a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, add a silky swath of flowers and tassels and you’ve got a whole new way of greeting the world. Oh, yeah, they can keep you warm, too! So many possibilities, so little time. You’ll want to tie one of these scarves on this fall: The Classic Square. These longtime favourites are back this year in all their chic glory. Think of these little scarves as the new choker necklace. Just fold them in half to form a triangle and tie around your neck. Whether it’s a dollar store bandana or a famous Hermes silk, square scarves are here to stay. Start your collection today. You’ll have plenty of scarves to fit any mood... whether you want to ride the range with a cowboy neckerchief one day or breeze around in a convertible a la Audrey Hepburn in a glamourous headwrap. The Long Rectangle. One of the most versatile kinds of scarves you can buy, the newest rectangles are long and skinny. This scarf is perfect for those big, floppy bows that are now popping up in stylish circles. But in beaded, tasseled and fringed versions, it is one of the best ways to dress up an evening tunic top or sheath just by draping the ends around your neck and letting them dangle down the front. Or if you’re in more of a “I love Lucy” mood, just wrap a long skinny scarf around your forehead. The Infinity Loop. Pull this popular scarf over your head and go. It’s easy and in chunky crocheted knits, it can keep you cozy and warm, layered

over sweaters and coats. Ditto for the “snood,” a form of neckwear touted by many designers, which is looped closely around the neck. Scooch these muffler-like scarves up over the back of your head, and you’ve got even more style...and more protection from winter chills. The latest infinity scarves have endless possibilities. The Wrap Scarf. Everyone should have at least one, if not more of these scarves in their accessory wardrobe. Larger in size, whether a rectangle or square, these multipurpose wraps go the distance in our wardrobes. They make a big statement, and you don’t really have to worry about what’s underneath... a white T-shirt or a black turtleneck. The scarf does all the work. That ubiquitous pashmina scarf in all its rainbow of colours, now starring at an airport kiosk near you, may do in a pinch, but this fall, there are so many more possibilities...and patterns. The Fluffy Scarf. Fur is having a huge moment now, and in fluffy scarves and wraps, you can expect to see the fuzz flying this season. With so many innovative ways to manufacture the “soft” stuff now, even high-fashion designers are getting in on the act. Watch for the furry fun to show up in rich, deep jewel-tone colours that will give anything you wear a touch of luxury, whether real or faux. The Signature Scarf. Yes, these are the designer scarves that are works of art signed and delivered with artistic flair. From Hermes to Gucci to Dior and more, these scarves are style statements handed down by grandmothers and mothers generation after generation. If you really want to make a lifetime investment in a scarf, this is the way to do it. © 2017 CREATORS.COM

hat’s the one thing that goes where you go, day in and night out? Chances are, it’s your handbag. Whether it’s a studded backpack, a crocembossed satchel or a furry cross-body bag, our handbags are accessories that see us through the daily grind, loaded with necessities big and small. But they can also make a style statement ... here are the newest ways to update one of our best fashion friends that goes everywhere we go. After all, most of us like to have more than just one good “friend,” right? • The Office Mate: The handbags we take to the office usually must do double duty in a big way. We stash laptops, tablets, phones, wallets and cosmetics (sometimes even an extra pair of shoes) in these carry-alls. There are lots of ways to load up on roomy bags with lots of style. Oversized handbags abound this fall, providing a solution to packing up lots of electronics and other necessities. Choose from huge, soft hobos (neon colours are hot) or more structured satchels embossed in animal prints or shining in lacquered leathers. • The Travel Companion: While the “really” big bags may come in handy when traveling, the smaller bags are often the ones that we

count on to move us quickly through airports when less is more, and being weighed down is not stylish at all. Your best friend in this case may be a slim tote that has a shoulder strap to free up your hands. Cross-body bags may also come in handy for organizing travel papers, cash and cards. There are lots of new wallets, too, that include built-in chargers and extra security protection. Choose a bright new colour like red, the favourite colour of the season, to make finding credentials fast even easier. • The Fashionista: Chances are, this friend will be covered up in fuzzy fur this fall and winter. And her handbag will be no different. Or she’ll tote around a statement-making logo bag branded with her favourite designer’s name or a graphic design stamped onto the bag emblazoned with stars or stripes or graffiti art. In
other words, the embellished handbag will be the “it” bag of the season, and even though it may only be around for a year, it’s all about putting the fun back in fashion. • The Brunch Bunch: These girlfriends are also about having a good time, but they get a little more serious about it. Their handbags for fall are shaping up to be a little more vintageinspired. Boxy, top-handle bags like the ones our grandmothers relied on are the accessories to buy now, especially if you’re making an investment. And we all know, there are plenty of handbags that carry a hefty price tag. But the newest architectural inspired designs are going to be around for a while. Check out the round hat-box designs if you really want to brunch with the best. © 2017 CREATORS.COM

BEAUTY INNOVATIONS:
2017
Eyes are in the spotlight this season BY HILARY KLASSEN
I
f the eyes are the windows to the soul, then the eyebrows are the window frames! And this fall, brows are framing a new conversation in beauty innovations. Among the innovations available at Merle Norman Cosmetics is a new player on the brow beat. “The brows are so big right now, in the sense that people realize that brows really frame the eyes and bring out your eye features,” says Paulette Schumacher, long-time owner of the Merle Norman Studio in Scotia Centre. With the new trend, people are willing to shape their brows a little more and add a bit more colour to them, to help frame the eye area. New in the Merle Norman tool kit this fall is a brow sculpting pencil. The trend is toward fuller brows and the pencil can be used in different ways to achieve the desired effect. “It’s designed to sculpt, define and groom brows to perfection. It has a unique chisel tip which allows for precise application while the flat angle shape allows for fuller strokes,” says Schumacher. Merle Norman beauty consultants help clients uncover new brow framing techniques for colour application. The long-wear formula won’t smudge your face. A little brush on the end of the pencil allows you to blend the colour versus simply drawing a line. “It can create a softer, more natural looking brow.” For extra durability, a wax is available to stabilize the brow colour and definition. Schumacher has seen brow trends come and go, from thick to thin and back. While there are new tools to create the fuller brow, some prefer a thinner brow. The whole idea is to make your brow stand out whether it’s thick or thin, she says. “Remember your brows are sisters, not twins!” says Schumacher. “Using a combination of our products will help make them look uniform. They say the eyes are the focus of the face but we all know it’s really the brows. Not defining your brows is like decorating a room and leaving the windows bare.” Another new player at Merle Norman this fall is a Purifying Peel-Off Charcoal Mask. Charcoal absorbs all kinds of impurities, and this ‘mask marvel’ also has antioxidants from green tea and
soy bean extracts, which soothe and calm the skin. Pores appear smaller and skin is refreshed, hydrated and conditioned. Soon to be in-store at Merle Norman is an innovative new Acne Defense line which includes an Acne Defense Foaming Cleanser, a Daily Treatment Serum and a Spot Treatment. The line clears up acne flare-ups while reducing redness and calming irritated skin. A new 24-Karat Gold Firming Foundation Primer lifts and smooths the appearance of skin, actually reducing the appearance of the depth, volume and number of wrinkles. The primer prepares the skin for foundation and prolongs its wear. It has copper peptides and amino proteins which hydrate the skin and restore its natural radiance. Enter Schumacher’s studio and you will catch the scent of buttercream frosting, your first clue to the inspired fall colour collection. Built on the themes of indulgence and decadence, the collection offers a ‘delicious experience.’ Two quad eye shadow compacts, Just Desserts and Sweet Treats, cover the warm and cool colour spectrums. Warmer shades tend to the browns, corals and creams, while the cool palette offers Candy Violet, a pretty neutral green called Sweet Escape and plums. A Sweet Delights blush trio includes two colours and a pop of highlights. The two blush shades can be worn alone or layered, and then enhanced with a highlight or shimmer finish. A new liquid lip colour in a long-wear formula offers hydration in three colours: Sugar Kisses, Candy Coated and Sweet Love. Perhaps the best proof of Merle Norman’s effectiveness is Schumacher’s own ageless appearance. She continues to love the product line and happily shares her wealth of experience and knowledge. “I love the cosmetics, the skin care and the glamour. They’ve got something for every skin type, the newest in technology and its affordably priced.” Merle Norman offers free make-up lessons, customized for each client, allowing them to try it out for themselves while discovering new trends and tips. Call Merle Norman at 306.653.4696 to book a spot for a free consultation, whether it’s for your ‘window frames’ or the ultimate indulgence.
PURE DECADENCE Satisfy your colour cravings with Merle Norman’s new patisserie-inspired shades, with the delectable scent of buttercream frosting. Paulette Schumacher, owner of Merle Norman Studio in Scotia Centre, wears the latest colours from this sweet collection including the exclusive collection ‘Sweet Treats’ in violet, plum and hazel green on her eyes, and waterproof ‘Soft Touch Eyeliner’ in Blackout. Her false eyelashes add volume and length, perfect for any age. The brows are a must to accent the eyes. Paulette applied the new ‘Brow Sculpting Pencil’ that defines the brows to perfection. The ‘Sweet Delights Cheek Trio’ are three different shades which can be worn individually or mixed together. Paulette’s lip colour is a long-wear ‘Liquid Lipcolor’ in Sweet Love. It has a whipped texture that glides on like a gloss with the pigment of a lipstick. Contouring and highlighting give Paulette’s make-up a professional finished look. STYLE WEEK 2017
North Ridge’s design team knows that residents of Highlander Ridge II love to entertain family and friends. The open concept kitchen and dining area will easily accommodate a crowd. PHOTO: ELAINE MARK, D & M IMAGES
BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG For residents of the historic neighbourhood of Montgomery Place, there truly is “no place like home.” Little has changed over the past 71 years in the community. Park-like halfacre lots line the quiet streets, more reminiscent of small town Saskatchewan than a city suburb. Families who moved here, stayed. Many who grew up here purchased their own homes, desiring to raise their own children in this close-knit neighbourhood with its unique small-town ambience. In 2016, Montgomery Place was designated a National Historic Site by Parks Canada, in recognition of its significance as one of the country’s most successful Veterans Land Act communities. Today, Montgomery Place remains one of the most sought-after neighbourhoods in the city. Infill development in the community has been limited and controlled. One of the few opportunities to purchase a new home in Montgomery Place is available through North Ridge Development Corporation and its Highlander Ridge bungalow townhomes. Phase One of Highlander Ridge, introduced in December of 2015, sold out quickly. With the unveiling of Highlander Ridge II, North Ridge has introduced another 20 bungalow-style townhomes, ranging in size from 1,206 to 1,244 square feet, with double attached garages. The townhome development is located at 3210 – 11th Street West. Highlander Ridge II repeats many of the attractive style elements which made Phase One so appealing. Buyers can select from two open-concept floor plans: The Gibson and The Montgomery. The show home at Highlander Ridge II features The Montgomery floor plan. Both offer two bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The show suite is the epitome of modern elegance, complemented by a fresh colour palette of cool grey and crisp white tones. Buyers can personalize their townhome by selecting from six different colour packages. The stylish open-concept kitchen is ideal for entertaining family and friends. “The Fusion Finish cabinets are from Superior Cabinets, featuring Savanna doors with crown molding. The heart of the kitchen is its granitetopped island with an extended eating bar. All kitchens include pantries with custom shelving,” says Trish London, a North Ridge sales consultant. She describes the layout of the Highlander Ridge II show home as “modern traditional”. The spacious front entrance offers separation from the rest of the home, with a long hallway featuring two coat closets and a powder room. A dramatic vaulted ceiling extends through the great room. The contemporary Gibson floor plan features a foyer leading more directly into the great room. “The Gibson has

The large master bedrooms at Highlander Ridge II include an inviting ensuite bath and roomy walk-in closet.
The master ensuite features a granite-topped vanity and oversized walk-in shower.
Quality of construction is another deciding factor for the discerning buyers at Highlander Ridge, adds London. “Many of them are leaving homes that were custom-built for them or that they built themselves. They know what to look for and they don’t want to sacrifice quality. They can see that here.” North Ridge ensures satisfaction through its Customer Care Warranty Program. “It’s a very pro-active approach that includes three comprehensive service calls during the first year of possession,” says London. Outstanding style, quality construction and dedicated customer service contributed to North Ridge Development Corporation being named “Builder of the Year” for a second consecutive year at the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association Bridges Awards. “It speaks to our experience and knowledge. North Ridge has been building homes for 35 years, but at the same time, we remain committed to innovation and forward-thinking,” says London. The Highlander Ridge II show home, at #1 -3210 – 11th Street West, is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays; and Mondays through Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m. To view by appointment, call Trish London at (306) 227-7471 or email: tlondon@ northridge.sk.ca. To learn more, visit www.northridge.sk.ca.

nine-foot ceilings throughout instead of the vaulted ceiling,” says London. Both plans offer a bright and spacious master bedroom, complete with an inviting ensuite and a large walk-in closet with custom shelving. Adjacent to the two bedrooms is the main floor
laundry, a convenience appreciated by buyers who don’t want to worry about climbing stairs in years to come. The show home features a fully developed basement, with a family room large enough for a pool table, two guest bedrooms and
third full bathroom. By opting to have North Ridge develop the basement, buyers can double their living space and ensure it is finished to the same high standard as their main floor. Each home at Highlander Ridge II comes with a large railed deck with
maintenance-free Duradek flooring, with privacy panels and a natural gas barbecue connection. Residents won’t need to bring their snow shovels or lawn mowers, adds London. “Driveways and lawns are maintained so residents can pick up and go at any time.”

F
or Sherri Hrycay, one of the perks of being a milliner is making regular trips to Europe for inspiration. With no milliner colleagues in the area, the Saskatoon hat designer chooses to cross the pond for master classes from royal milliners – like those whose creations are worn by Queen Elizabeth and Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge – whenever she can. Those trips may take her to Hol-

land as well, where she learns from milliners for the Dutch royal family in Hague. “It’s a goal to get one of my hats on a royal head somewhere!” laughs Hrycay. In the meantime, there’s already some feathers in her cap. One of her hats has graced the head of Sophie Trudeau and the Lieutenant Governor has several. Hrycay is doing a show in Toronto in December and another in Holland in March. A September trip to Paris and Holland is part of her preparations. She’s been invited to
participate in the next ‘Miss Fisher Con’ show in Las Vegas, which attracts fans of the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, a series popularized on Netflix, set in late 1920s Melbourne. Sova Design, Hrycay’s company, has recently taken up shop next to City Perks on Seventh Avenue, in the City Park neighbourhood. There, her beautiful creations are appreciated by a growing clientele. Walk-in traffic is intrigued with her fresh, unique designs. She hears comments like, “Wow, you do something different than we’ve seen around here.” The hats are made from rabbit felt which has more staying power than wool, lasting up to 50 years. They’re warm in winter too, a definite practical consideration in these parts, and a great alternative to either freezing your head off or wearing a toque. Increasingly, hats are becoming a fashion statement in their own right. Hrycay says more collections in Paris are including hats and headwear. A hat can pull a look together or complete an ensemble. “A hat enhances the outfit without taking over, unless you want it to. People who put on a hat in the store feel put together and sense something is missing when they take if off.” Hrycay is pressing men’s hats now as well as women’s, a market that has grown to 50 per cent of her sales. While the men are “going crazy over hats,” women are gravitating to the more masculine styles as well. “You’ll see a lot of music stars wearing the wider brimmed fedoras.” She does custom hats to fit certain
needs (like large heads) and often adds unique flair, like a 100-yearold ribbon she nabbed in Paris, for example. Sova Design has recently made inroads into wedding fashion. “This year has been the big year for doing mother of the bride and mother of the groom hats. They’re going a little bit more fancy.” Hrycay finds it a welcome change from denim as wedding attire. This year she did three Kentucky Derby hats, two Queen’s Plate hats and one hat that went off to tea with the Queen. “I’m predicting that in three years it’s going to be the ‘Roaring 20s’ again. You’re going to see a lot more art deco hats, jazz hats and cloches, that sort of thing. People like to reminisce and go back into the past,” says Hrycay. “From traveling and talking to my milliner friends and seeing what’s going on, I have this feeling.” She admits being a milliner has taken over her life. “It’s where I live, something I do 24 hours-a-day. If I’m not actually doing it, I’m dreaming about it.” As she has gotten more immersed in hat making, it’s become an art. Apart from taking master classes across the pond, Hrycay believes she may have come by her talent naturally. “I think it’s due to my family history. I have this secret family in France. From the snippets I’ve been able to gather, they were heavily involved in shoe manufacturing or something. I think the design gene is in me somewhere.” Shoppers are getting smarter

about how they allocate their dollars, opting for handmade quality and fine workmanship over mass production, Hrycay says. Paying a premium for a brand name is becoming less important. She loves the ‘hands-on’ aspect of her work, and while time can be at a premium, Hrycay says she’ll never run out of ideas. While her focus is on hats, Sova Design also has a clothing line for women and children. “It’s Lagenlook, a layered look reminiscent of what you might have seen in a medieval town in France if you were at the market – drapey comfortable clothing.” During Fall Fashion Week, we tip our hats to featured designer, Sova Design! When you visit the shop at 801 7th Avenue North, you can see and feel for yourself the beauty and quality of Hrycay’s designs. Visit sovadesign.ca for more inspiration.
