Awards show a creative collaboration
W
hen Alessia Cara hosts this year’s JUNO Awards on March 15, the 23-year-old will be one of the youngest hosts ever. The Moffats, made up of four brothers including triplets, were 17 and 18 when they hosted in 2000. This makes the Brampton, Ontario-raised singer-songwriter’s input into the awards show especially valuable, says executive producer Lindsay Cox. “When we first started talking to her, her observations were really smart,” said Cox, from Insight Productions who produces The JUNO Awards Broadcast. “She wasn’t going to just let the show happen around her, she was going to be a part of making it happen. The host has such an important role in setting the tone, and I think that mattered to Alessia. We wanted to know what her generation wants to see on television. So we really encouraged her to think that way. And she does think that way. She knows her audience.” Cara performed on the awards show for the first time in 2016, the year she won her first JUNO Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year Sponsored by FACTOR, the Government of Canada and Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters, followed by Pop Album of the Year in 2017 for her debut full-length Know-It-All and a GRAMMY for Best New Artist in 2018. “We’ve watched her grow up,” says Allan Reid, President & CEO of CARAS (The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences)/The JUNO Awards & MusiCounts. This year, the young singer is the JUNOS’ most nominated

artist, with her name appearing in six categories (including Album of the Year Presented by Music Canada for her second full-length, The Pains of Growing). When Cara was booked to host the show, the fact that she would become the most JUNO nominated artist this year, was unknown. “First, she’s an incredible musician, and very focused on what she’s doing musically,” Reid said. “But she’s also an incredibly smart as well as humble person. And in what

she talks about, what she writes about, she’s become an incredible role model for young women.” Cox and her team fielded suggestions from the young singer for the show. “When you think of how social media grabs people, it’s in little snippets, little bites, and she asked how could she do that, along with taking on a more traditional hosting role.” Along with hosting, Cara is scheduled to perform. Other scheduled performers include JUNO Award nominees Daniel Caesar (R&B/Soul Recording of the Year), The Glorious Sons (Rock Album of the Year), Lennon Stella (Breakthrough Artist of the Year Sponsored by FACTOR, the Government of Canada and Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters and Single of the Year), Tory Lanez (five nominations, including twice in R&B/Soul Recording of the Year), Jann Arden and more. Arden, who hosted the program in 1997 and co-hosted alongside Jon Montgomery in 2016, will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. This marks a milestone for not just the singer-songwriter but for CARAS’ Reid. Back when he was an A&R man for Universal Music Canada, Reid signed Arden to a record deal. She was his first signing. “To come full circle with her now, to see her go into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame almost 30 years later, is pretty special,” he said. The show’s producers are looking at how they can create a unique look and feel for each performance. “We were just talking to an artist who’s performing and we talked about what his performance should look like, who he could collaborate with, how do we create a new arrangement?” Cox said. “There’s a real excitement this year on the part of the artists to try something different, to go

outside their comfort zone. Each performance is bespoke, and we work closely with the artist to give them what they want.” Among the music headlines this year was the death of Neil Peart, drummer for one of the most successful Canadian rock bands of all time and Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees, Rush. Classic-rock fans can rest assured. “There will be something on the broadcast for Neil, absolutely,” said Reid. The JUNOS have evolved from an industry awards event to a weeklong festival in the host city. After a 13-year hiatus, the JUNOS are thrilled to be returning to Saskatoon. “There’s always something about going to some of these smaller markets versus some of the major centres,” Reid said. “Whether it’s St. John’s, Newfoundland, or London or Saskatoon, it’s a big deal when the JUNOS come into town. There’s a level of excitement that is palpable.” “You rarely see these artists all come through at one time in these smaller markets,” Cox said. “And that’s exciting. We’re finding such enthusiasm for supporting the show.” Local talent up for awards this year include The Dead South (Traditional Roots Album of the Year) and Foxwarren (Alternative Album of the Year Presented by Long & McQuade), both from Regina, and the Hunter Brothers. The latter are five siblings from the town of Shaunavon, and are nominated for Breakthrough Group of the Year Sponsored by FACTOR, the Government of Canada and Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters and Country Album of the Year. Once this year’s JUNOS are behind them, Reid, Cox and their respective teams will focus on 2021 and the show’s 50th anniversary, to be held in Toronto for the first time in a FUNDING PARTNERS
decade. “The 50th will be a very special celebration, where we’re not just looking forward but looking back on decades of Canadian music,” Reid said. This year’s fast-rising host, Alessia Cara, may be part of that celebration as well.

2020 JUNO AWARDS
Music Day on CBC: More great content on multiple platforms
By Shawn Conner
T
here won’t be enough hours in the day to take in all that Music Day on CBC has to offer on March 15. 2020 is the third year that CBC will broadcast the JUNOS since the awards show returned to the network after a 16-year-absence. To mark the homecoming, the national broadcaster instituted Music Day on CBC, a full day of programming that is designed to celebrate Canadian music on the day of the awards show. The corporation continues to expand its programming as well as viewing and listening options. “Even in the last three years we see more and more people consuming more and more content on the digital platform of their choice,” said Susan Marjetti, Executive Director, Radio and Audio, CBC. To feed this growing audience, CBC is making all Music Day on CBC content available on its streaming service CBC Gem and its new app, CBC Listen. Along with livestreaming, the platforms will offer the shows on demand. The programming includes a rebroadcast of last year’s CBC Music Festival, an all-Canadian event with performances by and interviews with Toronto-based indie-pop band Alvvays, Québecois singersongwriter Cœur de pirate, and Indigenous folk hero Buffy SainteMarie. Other shows include CBC Music: JUNOS 365 Sessions, which features Canadian artists covering a past song from the Single of the Year category, and Inducted: Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The latter features recent inductees Jann Arden, Andy Kim, Cowboy Junkies, Chilliwack and the late Bobby Curtola retracing their roots to the people and places that helped shape their careers. Marjetti attended the inaugural Canadian Music Hall of Fame Ceremony Presented by Music Canada in Calgary. “What an
Five of this year’s JUNO nominees are alumni of CBC’s Searchlight Contest, including Regina’s The Dead South (Traditional Roots Album of the Year). incredible night,” she said. “We’ll be bringing that footage to our programming for the first time.” Just prior to the actual JUNO Awards ceremony, q host Tom Power will sit down with nominees and performers Daniel Caesar, City and Colour, Lennon Stella, and host Alessia Cara in a pre-show special. Radio programming includes recordings of JUNOfest Presented by CBC Music showcases of performers in this year’s classical and jazz categories, highlights from 25 years of award winners in the Indigenous category, recording of the JUNO Songwriters’ Circle Presented by SOCAN in association with Music Publishers Canada, and the JUNO Winners’ Circle. JUNO Songwriters’ Circle features nominees telling stories behind their songs and performing them in an unplugged format. The JUNO Winners’ Circle celebrates the winners from the awards given out the night before
the broadcast at the JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards Presented by Music Canada with interviews, acceptance speeches and insight from host Tom Allen and CBC Music experts. Music Day on CBC is just one initiative of the broadcaster’s ongoing commitment to Canadian music. The JUNOS 365 Sessions, which features a Canadian artist covering a past JUNO winner, are recorded and uploaded year-round. Other year-round CBC initiatives include the CBC Searchlight Contest. An annual hunt for the country’s best undiscovered talent, the Searchlight Contest’s alumni include five of this year’s nominees: Nunavut’s Northern Haze (Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year Presented by APTN), Edmonton’s Nuela Charles (Adult Contemporary Album of the Year), Montreal’s Koriass (Francophone Album of the Year), Hamilton’s iskwē (Adult Alternative Album of the Year and Music Video of the Year
Presented by Stingray), and Regina’s The Dead South (Traditional Roots Album of the Year). “Shopé won last year allowing him to participate in the Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class and other opportunities including playing at CBC Music Festival,” Marjetti said. “We want to find even more ways to be working with emerging artists, to make sure that we’re part of their ongoing development.” Steve Jordan, CBC’s new Senior Director of CBC Music feels the same way, she said. The broadcaster’s commitment to Canadian music starts in the classroom. Every fall the CBC, in association with MusiCounts—the charity associated with CARAS and the JUNO Awards—holds the Canadian Music Class Challenge. The contest encourages music classes across the country to engage with Canadian music by covering a song from a pre-approved list. The
students’ version can be note-fornoteoramorecreativeinterpretation. Once a performance has been recorded on video, CBC uploads it to CBC Music and YouTube. The winning classes in each category, and the special Passion Prize awarded by MusiCounts, receive prizes towards their music program as well as a gold record plaque. The Challenge sees more entries every year, Marjetti says. “We’ve received beautiful emails from teachers in participating schools who say how much that event meant to those students and how encouraging it was to music students to keep studying, to keep learning. The dream is that these children of music classes may be on that stage themselves getting a JUNO award and that we may have played some small part in encouraging them to pursue music as a lifelong passion and career.” CBC TV, CBC Radio One and CBC Music will air The 2020 JUNO Awards on Sunday, March 15, beginning at 8 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. CT, from the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon. Along with the TV and radio broadcasts, the show will be live-streamed on the free CBC Gem streaming service and the new CBC Listen app. For programming information, and the full Music Day on CBC schedule, visit CBCMusic.ca/junos.

THE SHEEPDOGS
We asked some of the performers who will be heading to Saskatoon for JUNO Week a few questions about their inspirations, ambitions and musical backgrounds. Their answers are revealing! LENNON STELLA
Performer on The 2020 JUNO Awards Broadcast on Sunday March 15 at SaskTel Centre Nominated for: Single of the Year – La Di Da Breakthrough Artist of the Year (Sponsored by FACTOR, the Government of Canada and Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters) Q: Millions of fans watched you grow up on TV and on social media. Now, at age 20, you’ve made the transition to rising pop star. Who in your life keeps you authentic and grounded? A: I really think it’s so important the people you surround yourself with and who you choose to keep around, so I hang around authentic and genuine people that will keep me in line. Also, my family is extremely grounded and it would be impossible for me to be anything but grounded because of them and how I was raised. Q: What musical styles do you want to explore? A: I’m very inspired by a lot of different genres from different eras. I take it all and try to piece it all together into my music. Ultimately I want to live the world of indie-pop with timeless songs. I think that my music can be characterized however it wants. I’m going to make music I love and wherever it lands I’m OK with.
HUNTER BROTHERS
Performing at the JUNO Kick-Off Concert Presented by CBC Sports on Thursday, March 12 at Coors Event Centre and lacing up to play JUNO Cup Presented by CBC Sports on Friday, March 12 at Merlis Belsher Place Nominated for: Breakthrough Group of the Year (Sponsored by FACTOR, the Government of Canada and Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters), Country Album of the Year - State of Mind Q: Growing up, the Hunter brothers were avid hockey players and had a passion for farming. At the same time, all five of you took piano lessons, completing Grade 8 Royal Conservatory standing. How did your parents keep you motivated to stick with piano lessons and how have you benefited from that music education? A: Growing up, mom and dad had an agreement. Mom put us in piano lessons, and dad put us in hockey. We weren’t allowed to go out and play hockey until our piano was practiced. They wanted us to be active, but really felt the importance of music being a part of our lives. Two brothers would practice before school, and then the others would practice after, and at one time, mom and dad were travelling with 7 different hockey teams during the same season. They put a premium on time usage, and really made an investment at an early age and encouraged us to stick with it. We are very grateful for that today.
CELEIGH CARDINAL
See Celeigh at q with Tom Power LIVE AT THE JUNOS on Thursday, March 12 at Broadway Theatre Nominated for: Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year (Presented by APTN) – Stories from a Downtown Apartment, Celeigh Cardinal Q: Your new album, Stories from a Downtown Apartment, is autobiographical. Is there one lifeinspired song that really stands out? A: Ooooh, this is a tough one. There are many life shaping moments written into this album. But I would say the song that hits me hard every time is ‘Loving is Letting Go’. I wrote the song at the end of a relationship, when I realized I would never be able to give my partner the things he wanted, and the most loving thing I could do for him was to let him go, to find what he needed. It was hard because I still loved him dearly, but it was the right thing to do. In the second verse I speak about how it would be loving of myself to let go of the shame and hurt that had seemed to always be looming over me like a dark cloud and immobilizing me. The song is about making tough choices out of love. Be it love for yourself, or love of others. A tear jerker for me, every time.
THE SHEEPDOGS
Headlining the JUNO Kick-Off Concert Presented by CBC Sports on Thursday, March 12 at Coors Event Centre Q: Who’s on your playlist right now? A: We made a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young mega mix that has stuff from CSN, CSNY, their solo albums, their duo albums, as well as Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds that they wrote. It’s awesome, it’s like six hours long. Q: What is your dream gig? A: Any show where the sound is good onstage and the audience is enthusiastic can be a dream gig, it doesn’t really matter to me where it is.

and market. But offerings in the culinary guide are available throughout the year— not just during the JUNOS. “Our goals with the JUNO Culinary Experience are to bring a national and international spotlight to Saskatoon’s culinary scene,” says Venneri, “and casting Saskatchewan in a new light to new audiences.”
T
he JUNOS are coming to Saskatoon for a week of festivities that celebrate Canada’s top musical talent. And while music will take centre stage, so too will a culinary program that reflects the city’s burgeoning culinary scene— where the stars are local farmers, ranchers and producers. Tourism Saskatoon has teamed up with the JUNO Awards to shine a spotlight on those local stars through its JUNO Culinary Experience. After all, Saskatoon was declared Canada’s hottest culinary destination in 2019 by Forbes and one of the top 52 places to go in 2018 by The New York Times. The JUNO Culinary Experience will treat guests to a uniquely Saskatchewan evening at this year’s JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards Presented by Music Canada —from locally inspired cuisine to Saskatoon’s favourite pours—thanks to funding from Western Economic Diversification Canada, through the Canada Experiences Fund. The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) will also be offering a vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free meal options at this year’s event. “It’s an incredible opportunity for us to not only showcase to the music industry an unforgettable meal, but also highlight the entire city of Saskatoon as a food destination,” says Katy Venneri, Director of Events at the JUNO Awards. “We’re thrilled to be working alongside the city’s top culinary talent, including Chef Dale MacKay and Chef Eliot Lang, to deliver an exceptional culinary experience during the event.” Chef Dale MacKay, season-one winner of Top Chef Canada, is curating a menu for the event alongside Executive Chef Eliot Lang of WTC Saskatoon at Prairieland Park. “We’re doing our best to create a menu that showcases Saskatoon, but we also want to give a different light into the Prairies,” says MacKay. As Canada’s breadbasket, Saskatchewan is known for producing wheat, but the province has also evolved as a producer of lentils and

heritage grains, alongside its pork and poultry industries. But MacKay also points to the province’s lesser-known gems. “We have the best wild mushrooms,” he says. “Even asparagus and artichokes, people don’t realize they grow here, so we’re trying to cultivate that.” For the JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards Presented by Music Canada, MacKay will skip stereotypical Prairie foods like Saskatoon berries and perogies, and focus instead on local, seasonal ingredients, like cold storage root vegetables. Apples sourced from Crossmount Cider Company, for example, will be incorporated into MacKay’s dessert: panna cotta with apple jelly and crisp rosemary. Indeed, dishes being served will incorporate ingredients related to Saskatchewan, and JUNO TV will profile some of the city’s top chefs, including Chef MacKay, Executive Chef Jenni Lassard of Wanuskewin
Heritage Park and Executive Chef Christie Peters of Primal and The Hollows restaurants. Chef Lassard, for example, creates meals celebrating Saskatchewan’s Indigenous cuisine with foraged and local ingredients. At Primal, Chef Peters creates time-honoured Italian food using Saskatchewan heritage grains and whole animal butchery, and at The Hollows—located in the historic Golden Dragon building—she incorporates wild-harvested mushrooms, flowers, sap and roots along with meat, poultry and eggs from small farmers. “We’ve taken leaps and strides in agriculture with new species of plants and food products,” says Todd Brandt, President and CEO of Tourism Saskatoon. “And with an assemblage of top-rated chefs, the creativity here is phenomenal—I gain pounds because of it.”

But even those who aren’t nominated for a JUNO can eat like an award winner. Many of the festivities will take place in venues across Downtown, Broadway and Riversdale, where top-rated restaurants, cafés, breweries and distilleries can be found. Visitors and locals alike, for example, can experience MacKay’s Top Chef-worthy cuisine at his restaurant, Ayden Kitchen and Bar, which offers a seasonal menu of globally inspired comfort food made with local ingredients. Other options that showcase Saskatoon’s local talent include Black Fox Farm & Distillery, with a farm-to-distillery approach—90 per cent of the ingredients in its spirits are grown right on the farm. Odla is another; its farm, called Farm One Forty, provides in-season produce, free-range meat and honey from its apiary to its Broadway restaurant
