From past to future, and for young and old, Watrous and area has something for everyone. Already a fast-growing community with full amenities, and located near to the healing waters of Little Manitou Lake, Watrous continues to grow and develop. With numerous projects just completed or underway, the town has even more to offer. “I don’t know where to begin,” says Brendan Manz, community development officer with the Town of Watrous. To start at the beginning in a man-
ner of speaking, the town is poised to open its very first daycare centre. Manz says the daycare is a result of the community’s growing population, many of whom are young families. “I think the last census, Watrous is up 3.2 per cent, so we’re attracting new people all the time. But the problem is that, when they come here they’re looking for places with child care so they can have a home here,” he says. The daycare will be located in the previous Pentecostal Church, conveniently located across the street from the school. Fundraising is underway to pay for the roughly $100,000 for
renovations to the old church. At the other end of the spectrum, Manz hopes that residents and visitors alike will soon be able to look into the past at a heritage centre and museum to be housed in the previous SaskWater building on Main St. “With the tourist destination that we are, we were one of the few towns without a small town museum,” he says. Fundraising is also underway for that project, which Manz says is part of a larger project to revitalize the downtown. “Downtown is very important to the community and sort of the epicentre of industry,” he says.

Unfortunately, while some work has been done, this year’s provincial budget cut funding to the Main Street Saskatchewan Program. “We did receive some funds in the fall, so we’re moving ahead with a community engagement downtown revitalization plan to put the focus back on Main Street,” says Manz. Recent improvements to the Watrous Centennial Arena will be more than welcome. In addition to upgraded lighting, seats were repurposed from Regina’s old Agridome. “The rink is the centre of the community, especially in the winter time. With recent upgrades to the centre, built in 1967, inside it looks like a fairly new facility,” he says. Manz credits the area’s diverse d attrac- economy with driving the increased population and development. “The great thing about Watrous and Manitou [Beach Village], we’re a very diverse economy. Between tourism, potash, agriculture and small businesses, we keep our economy strong,” he says. The other major factor is the location, roughly half-way between the Alberta and Manitoba borders. “The central location is very advantageous. About 80 per cent of the population is within a three hour-drive of us,” Manz says. Not only is the location central, it also lies in the parkland region of the province, a big draw for tourists. The parkland, the geographical area
of the province that separates the prairie grassland to the south from the boreal forests of the North, is covered with trees and dotted with lakes and agricultural land. Long a magnet for First Nations people, its beauty and the healing waters of Little Lake Manitou began drawing European settlers around the turn of the 20th century. The first settlers arrived in about 1903, with the greatest influx
between 1904 and 1914. Watrous was named after Frank Watrous Morse, the general manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific. It was incorporated as a town in 1909, with a population of 659. The population of the area has now grown to more than 3,000 residents, including Watrous and the Village of Manitou Beach. The waters of Little Lake Manitou are among the main attractions for
visitors — more than 100,000 each year. They are said to possess a range of healing and therapeutic properties and the entire industry based on it continues to attract visitors from near and far. Visits, and residents, also flock to the amenities at the Manitou and District Regional Park. The area also boasts a nine-hole golf course, nature trails and other attractions for those who love the out-

doors. It’s even possible to watch a movie outside at one of the last drivein movie theatres in the province or dance the night away at DanceLand, a unique dancehall with a horsehair cushioned dance floor. From daycare to heritage, Watrous has it all. “Whether for business or for travel, whatever it may be, we’re a place that seems to have it,” Manz says.

on’t be deceived by its rural location. John’s Plate Family Dining, 212 First Ave. W., is a contemporary restaurant that cooks up big-city flavours. Since 2008, John and Marla Koupantsis have been providing exquisite meals from a menu that’s packed with everyone’s favourite foods.
This is no ordinary, small town, deep-fried fare. For John, it is all about quality and adding a personal touch to every order. That’s why the burgers are homemade, the steaks are always fresh — never frozen — and the gourmet pastas are prepared to your specifications.

THE JOHN’S BURGER!
“People have noticed that the meals we offer are different,” said John. “They realize the effort that we put into our menu. For example, we have several chicken and seafood options, because we know people are eating healthier. And, we know the town is enjoying the food, because we always hear good things about what we’re doing — and they tell other people, too.” The most popular lunch item is the steak sandwich. All of John’s steaks are Canadian AAA and aged over 30 days to ensure tenderness. As well, a daily lunchtime feature menu changes with the seasons. For supper, again the steak is a favourite. The pasta dishes are popular, too, because of the great selection and because you can customize your order. If it’s pizza that you crave, try one of John’s Gourmet Pizzas. You’ll enjoy lots of toppings and a great taste that will be sure to satisfy your appetite. You’ll understand why they were named Watrous’s Best Pizza by Trip Advisor. Save lots of room for dessert though; there’s an awesome selection of tasty treats. John recommends the brownie plate — Marla’s specialty!

W AT R O U S / M A N I T O U B E A C H Celebrate Canada Day in Watrous and Manitou Beach BY JES SE GREEN Content Works
Nothing says Canada Day like maple leaf tattoos, parades, pancakes and fireworks. Join the communities of Watrous and Manitou Beach to celebrate the iconic 150th Confederation anniversary with these Canada Day classics plus so much more. With events planned from Friday evening through to Sunday morning, the 2017 Canada Day and Homecoming weekend will be one for one for the books. The festivities kick off with registration and a chance to catch up with new and old friends at the Watrous Civic Centre where an arts and heritage display will be set up. Live music acts are almost too many to list with evening cabarets, daytime stage events and the Saturday night
Beach Boogie. Die-hard football fans can catch a screening of the Saskatchewan Roughriders game at the Watrous Arena on Saturday night, while the light-footed can head to historic Danceland at Manitou Beach. Dance the night away to the stylings of old time country band William & the Shadows. The half-pints in the crowd will love to join the kids’ bicycle parade, enjoy the many floats in the main parade (and keep an eye out for flying candy!) and making creations at the craft table. Get moving with kids’ activities at the sports grounds or head to the pool for afternoon activities. Buckle up and hang on for a thrilling ride with the Rush Monster Truck ride. The Saskatchewan Rush Lacrosse truck will be stopping in
Watrous on its Saskatchewan summer tour. They offer rides to eight people per trip with 20 per cent of proceeds going towards the children’s charity KidSport. Be sure to catch the remarkable talents of First Nations hoop dancer Lawrence Roy Junior who shares his love of dance, culture and mother earth. You will know him when you see him - he’s the guy with the world’s happiest smile. Roy often runs small workshops to teach basic hoop dancing and the meaning behind his regalia and culture after his performances. His show is at Manitou Beach’s Danceland venue at 2 p.m. If all goes well, Phase 2 of the Watrous Rotary Trail will be complete and the grand opening will take place on Friday evening. This trail
system is well used and enjoyed by walkers, cyclers, joggers, strollers and wheelchairs alike, and the second half of the loop will enhance the experience. It is the result of many years of hard work and fundraising. Stop by the Watrous Sports Grounds to cheer on the minor ball players or try your luck at the Watrous Rotary bingo. The Saturday afternoon Meet and Greet will feature a short program to honour local businesses of yesterday and today. Watrous and Manitou Beach sure know how to throw a party and this year’s homecoming celebrations will be nothing short of fantastic. For a full listing of events search for #wmbhome150 or Watrous Manitou Beach Canada 150 Homecoming on Facebook. Pre-registration is appreciated.

Manitou Beach upgrades relieve flooding concerns BY CAROL T ODD Content Works
A winter with less snow than normal and a warm spring coupled with drying winds have helped keep spirits up and water levels down at Manitou Beach. With summer around the corner, Gerry Worobec, mayor of the resort village, is more pumped than the numerous sumps along Little Manitou Lake. “We’re rockin’ and a rollin’ out here,” he says. “We can accommodate visitors of every kind. We’re ready to go.” Such has not always been the case, with the community battling flood waters for the past several years. Water levels in the area have been on the rise since 2010 due to heavy precipitation and runoff. With most lakes that’s not a problem, but Little Manitou Lake has no outlet — there’s simply nowhere for the water to go. While that helps retain the lake’s distinctive mineral content, it also means that runoff and rain accumulate as well.
Formed by receding glaciers during the most recent ice age, the long, narrow lake is fed by underground springs. With no way out for the water, minerals like sodium, magnesium and potassium salts build up. The salt content of the water (180 g/L) gives it a density about half of that of the Dead Sea, allowing bathers to float easily. The waters are said to possess a range of healing and therapeutic properties and the industry based on it continues to attract more than 100,000 visitors from near and far each year. First Nations legend tells of the discovery of the healing power of the lake in the distant past. It is said that a group of young men, ill from European disease, recovered after spending several days at the lake and soaking in its restorative waters. Medicine men named the lake Manitou in honour of their deity, the Great Spirit. This and other stories of the ”Lake of Healing Waters” spread throughout the Plains and, eventually, around the world.
Worobec says residents are delighted with the multi-million dollar improvements that will help protect the community for the long term. Phase 1, funded by $3.877 million from the province’s Water Security Agency’s Emergency Flood Protection Plan, was completed last fall and work on Phase 2 is underway. “Phase one, which included raising the berm by a metre, was completed last fall,” he says. “Right now the contractors are back to work to complete phase two to cap the top of the berm, then we’ll be paving the highway throughout the village to get it back to where it was.” The overall cost of the project is $4.9 million, and Mosaic Potash, a major industry in the area, provided a grant of $150,000, $100,000 of which has gone to top up the village’s share of the cost. The balance of $50,000 will go towards future projects, including the possibility of a diversion project. “Preliminary engineering has been done and we want to get that ball rolling,” he says.
The village of Manitou Beach has been hard hit by flooding in recent years, but recent improvements combined with lower spring runoff have kept the water levels down. PHOTO: MA NITOU B EACH V ILLAGE
The work that has been done so far has residents smiling, Worobec says. “This last dyke repair and raise, we killed several birds with one stone. We put in all these sumps, raised the whole road, so now people are driving actually on top of the dykes. Visually, it looks very nice; we’ve received piles and piles of compliments.” In addition to the work by the village, the mayor says that some property owners, too, are taking steps to keep their cabins safe in the future and have raised the height of their cabins. “People are kind of excited
about this latest work done. They’re thrilled that their property values have now gone back up,” Worobec says. For a village and area that rely on the benefits of water, too much is, indeed, too much. With the work already undertaken and plans for additional improvements in coming days and years, Manitou Beach is poised for a great future where enough water is just enough. “People’s spirits are much better. People are feeling much, much better about the future,” says Worobec.

W AT R O U S / M A N I T O U B E A C H Watrous Fun Run showcases machines with sheen ANDREW LIVINGST ONE
For the past quarter century, the Watrous and Manitou Beach Annual Fun Run Auto Show ‘n’ Shine has dazzled car lovers. It returns this July 29 for another day of shining steel in the summer sun. The event is intended to showcase vehicles of every shape and size to roll down a road or a racetrack. “It’s an automotive-style show ‘n’ shine, but it’s open to anything of special interest, whether it be cars, trucks, motorcycles, semis, drag racing vehicles and stock cars. Last year, we had a couple of electric cars, which were a Tesla and a Volt,” says Jason Lindgren, who organizes the event with his family and friends. “It’s definitely one of the best outdoor car shows that you’re going to come across in Saskatchewan, partly because of the quality of the cars, partly because of the location, partly because there’s a lot for people to do other than just take in the car show.” That morning will begin with a pancake breakfast at 8 o’clock to fuel
up the attendees before they view the vehicles. Then, car owners, clubs and related organizations will line Watrous’ Main Street to show off their machines and perform their presentations. “We’ve got different exhibitors, like Prairieland Motorsports, with their Biodiesel Jet Car,” says Lindgren. “Also, we have the Boss Blue Pulling Tractor team that comes out. They bring one of their tractors for that very purpose, and they come to promote racing against drugs. They’re there partly to get people from racing in the streets to racing on the track.” Based on past experience, Lindgren expects around 200 participants in the event, and, although registration is open in the weeks leading up to the 29th, entrants will still be accepted from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during the event. “We do a lot of pre-registration just to have a better idea of our numbers, but you can also show up that day and register,” says Lindgren. Aside from the cars and other vehicles, concessions will give visitors easy access to delicious food while all-
Visitors to Manitou Beach on August 10 to 13 could be forgiven for feeling some confusion: why are lumberjacks and lumberjills congregating in the middle of the prairie? And what are they doing with those chainsaws? If it seems like madness, then you’re right: it’s Maple Madness, and it’s becoming a tradition. Two years ago, the artists of Watrous/Manitou were considering ideas as to how they could attract attention to their efforts, and, because so many of them worked in wood carving, they realized that a chainsaw carving competition might be exactly what they needed. So, they put out an invitation and brought in star chain-
saw artists from across Canada to compete against each other. “Some of the artists that we’ve had in the past were ones that represented Canada in the Husky World Cup that was in Germany,” said Brendan Manz, community development officer with the Watrous/Manitou Marketing Group. Maple logs with a diameter of four to six feet were locally sourced and donated for the artists to use, and, by the end of the four days, the large chunks of wood had been carved into masterpieces using tools ranging from chainsaws, to chisels, to sandpaper. Kat Spencer, Canada’s top lumberjill, demonstrated her axe-throwing and wood-chopping skills, and the carvers took a break from their larger projects to participate in a two-hour
of the nice things: coming on a Thursday or a Friday and seeing them start off, and then coming a couple of days later and seeing the pieces as they advance through the weekend and just what these carvers are able to do.” It’s an opportunity to interact with the carvers and discuss their process. “They’re very open, and they work together too,” says Manz. “They talk about creative ideas back and forth, and you’re able to come and not only watch them work but also ask a few questions and interact with the artists as well. That always makes it a neat visitor experience.” There is both money and prestige attached to winning the competition, and attendees can even play a role in deciding who will receive one of the prizes. “Last year, it was about $8,000 worth of prize money that we handed
out to the carvers,” says Manz. “There are various awards that we have. We have Top Carver, and then a sort of People’s Choice Award that people can actually vote on.” Visitors can also hunt for the carvings that were created during the last event. “In 2015, we took those carvings and we posted them around town,” says Manz. “We have them in our parks, and we have them at certain businesses. They act as nice little character pieces around both Watrous and Manitou Beach.” Manz recommends that those planning to attend book their accommodations soon, because the event is both popular and unique in the province. “We’re not located in a forest,” he says. “We don’t usually have lumberjack competitions in the middle of the prairie.”

ages entertainers provide a variety of shows and activities. “There’s no charge for the spectators that want to come to the event, and we’ve just tried to make it a real family event,” Lindgren says. “People can come, look at the cars, bring the kids out. We provide free face painting. In the past, we’ve had Beeper the clown and different children’s entertainers. For a number of years, we’ve had the Sask Agility dog club — they

come out with their dogs to do obedience and agility demos.” As in past years, the public activities will conclude with a parade at 3:30 p.m., as the vehicles roll out and cruise through the town. For participants and their families, there will be a banquet in the evening to celebrate and recognize the best of the event. “We give away 27 different awards for Best Ford, Best Chrysler, Best GM, as well as categories includ-
ing Best Paint, Upholstery, and different things like that,” says Lindgren. “We also have an award for Best Club Participation,” he added. The club that fielded the most entries is rewarded with a cash prize. “In the past, we’ve had a $500 cash award if the club shows up with more than 15 cars, and then, if they’re less than 15, we start giving a $300 prize, but that’s only to the top club,” Lindgren said. “Not every club that comes with that number of cars necessarily wins.” The pre-registration draw award rewards those participants who signalled their attendance at the event before July 25. “Anybody that preregisters before the date is in a draw for a first prize of $300 cash. There’s also a VIP draw, which is the second prize,” says Lindgren. “That particular prize is two nights’ accommodation at Manitou Springs, including swim passes, breakfast passes at Manitou Springs Hotel, and passes for golf and mini-golf.” To pre-register your vehicle, visit the event website at watrousfunrun. com.
Quick Cut event. The competition was a success. “In 2015, we had about 4,000 people out to the event, and we got a lot of positive comments, and so we knew that we had done something right,” says Manz. In 2017, the intention is to repeat that success with a new Manitou Maple Madness Chainsaw Carving Competition from August 10 to 13. “We’ll have it all set up in our community hall in Manitou Beach,” says Manz. “We have a super-large area there, and we have it all fenced off.” Attendees can visit on one day or enjoy all four days of festivities. “It’s $5 for a day and $20 for a weekend pass, and people can come and go as much as they want,” said Manz. “That’s one

Long ago, Aboriginal people discovered the healing qualities of Little Manitou Lake and named it after the Great Spirit
- Manitou. In recent years the waters of Manitou Beach have been wreaking havoc with floods that threatened the community of 300. Laurie Bdzel can see the lake from her home. “When the Cree used to visit the

lake or take its waters for healing, there was always a ceremony and an offering. For every drop they took, they paid respect to the Great Spirit,” says Bzdel who is a business owner in the village. “That poor lake has been cursed at for years because it’s been on the verge of wiping out the community. And so I thought it was time to pay our Toonie respects and rejuTuesdays venate the spirit of June-Sept. 8-9:30pm the lake.” Call us for
And so began the quest to heal the spirit of Little Manitou Lake. With the strong support of the Village of Manitou council, she began inviting the First Nations community to once again to pay homage to the waters. She called the Saskatchewan Indigenous Cultural Centre who suggested performers. As it turned out, the idea was an easy sell. “The support from the Village council and the First Nations people around this has been unreal. Everyone I talk to is so eager and excited,” Bzdel says. Conrad MedicineRope says the Thundering Hillz group were excited for their performance at Little Manitou Lake. “It was a very spiritual gathering place for
our people. Knowing the spirit and intent of the lake; we are all very excited to perform,” he says. “Laurie has taken on a great challenge to combine First Nations with her little village and revitalize the lake.” The Thundering Hillz First Nations Dance Theatre was established in 2010 and exists to share their beautiful heritage through song, music and dance. The performance by this prestigious dance troupe is unique because it is allows people from any cultural background the chance to see these spiritual and often private powwow performances. Manitou Beach will be treated to a second performance by the Creeland Dancers on July 8, 2017.

Hailed as ‘North America’s Finest Square Dancers,’ this group is known for its vibrant and energetic Métis style of dance. Most dancers are from the Beardy’s and Okemasis First Nation. “My jaw hit the floor when they danced,” says Bzdel. Lawrence Roy Jr. has been hoop dancing since his elementary school days at St. Mary’s in Saskatoon and will return to Manitou to perform on Canada Day. “I call him the Happy Hoop Dancer! He always has a smile on his face,” says Bzdel. “His performance is a message. All our performers want to share the reasons for their dances, for the colours in their regalia. They want to teach their craft.” The area’s history is one of pilgrimages, of ceremony, of blessing and honouring the waters. And the history tells of re-

sounding peace. The legends say that warriors from any tribe would lay down their weapons in this place of truce. Medicine men would bring their sick to be cured and they would hold sacred ceremonies and ask for blessings of the Great Spirit. “This is one of few areas where there wasn’t a battle. It’s one of few places in Indigenous culture that isn’t built on a negative,” says Bzdel. Together with the village council, its community and the generous spirit of so many prestigious First Nations performers, they have opened the door for a long-awaited spiritual awakening in the Manitou valley. Though some of these events have passed, villagers and visitors should keep an eye on the notice boards as the momentum of healing Little Manitou Lake’s big spirit continues.

Isn’t it time?
Certain parts of the world seem to attract artists and musicians. It’s as though creative spirits are enchanted with the land, the history and the feel of a place. This certainly seems to ring true for the Watrous - Manitou Beach area, where a tiny village and a small town support professional galleries, exhibits and performances that would measure up on any metro scale. The family-friendly Stars for Saskatchewan concert series brings acclaimed talent from across Canada to venues in Watrous and Manitou. Boot-stomping folk music, hilarious and impressive juggling and Celtic tunes are just some of the varied and acclaimed live acts slated to perform in the Watrous Civic Centre and Danceland at Manitou Beach. With a small population and lots of space, Saskatchewan people are experts at the road trip. For a tenth year, the Spirit of Manitou Trail offers a glimpse into many artists’ creative spaces combined with the adventure of road-tripping. The selfguided tour evolves each year with new exhibitors joining
and others taking a break. This year 16 artists are participating and can be found in Watrous, Manitou Beach, Meacham and two rural locations. The beauty of a self-guided tour is visitors may make their own routes and visit as many or few of the stops as they like. Mediums include photography, bone carving, bronze sculpture, oil and acrylic paints, portraits, willow furniture, ceramic art, concrete, quilting and wood carving. Visit the website or pick up a brochure and follow the Spirit of Manitou Studio Trail signs during posted hours on July 8 and 9, 2017. Thanks to a generous group of volunteers and support from OSAC (Organization Of Saskatchewan Arts Councils), the Gallery on 3rd in Watrous presents a professional space and adjoining Art Shoppe. The Gallery features a mix of local area artists and touring exhibits throughout the year. The OSAC touring show, There’s an Artist in the Garden runs until June 24, to be followed by a Canada Day display for the early part of July. The Watrous Library also presents a gallery space with rotating exhibits throughout the year.

See Chainsaw carving, axe throwing, wood chopping and find out what a Water Boiling Contest entails at Manitou Maple Madness from Aug. 9 to 13. Eagles, gophers, Buddhas and First Nation Chiefs emerged from the wood at the last festival; who knows what will be revealed this time! Presented by the Resort Village of Manitou every second year, this is a premium prairie wood carving festival. You may find Sarah McKen and Clayton Cave at their spot on Elizabeth Avenue where side by side are Four Feathers art by Cave and McKen’s bronze sculptures featured in the Little Manitou Art Gallery. Cave hand carves intricate jewelry from bone, antler and ivory as well as creating custom knives. With inlaid handles and hand-etched steel blades, Cave’s functional art pieces are featured in collections overseas and across North America. Guests are invited to see his carving bench and workshop. The Little Manitou Art Gallery may indeed be little, but the scope of artists and mediums represented is grand. Sarah McKen displays her cast bronze sculptures and selections of Cave’s jew-
ellery alongside the artwork of more than 20 guest artists. Visitors will discover fine silver-smithing, hand-painted paper earrings, slumped glass, hand dyed silk and photography - just to name a few. “When people stop here they find one-of-a-kind works of art; things you can’t find just anywhere,” says McKen. Guest artists are hosted during weekends throughout the summer, and this July 2 to mark their second year will be an opening reception. Tucked away on Evenson Avenue is the welcoming and cozy GG’s Gallery & Gifts. Visitors find Michael Gaudet’s art and writing, Sharon Gibson’s line of Manitou Mineral Bath Products and many other treasures in the gallery, open for its ninth season this year. With performing arts, chainsaw carving, artisan trails, rotating exhibits and workshops, the artistic spirit is alive and well in unsinkable Watrous Manitou.
