Saskatoon style takes to the runway at SFDF B Y SHERRY MCCORM IC K F OR SP S PECIAL PROJ E C T S

Celebrate our city’s diverse and vibrant fashion community at the Saskatoon Fashion and Design Festival (SFDF), presented by ESYXE Real Estate Group, June 5 to 7. Friday night’s launch will begin with a fashion event unlike any the city has ever seen: the “SFDF Deconstructed Runway” at Bottega Trattoria. Local design talent will be in the spotlight: Laurie Brown, Melissa Squire, Amaranth Designs, Eleganzia Couture, Whiskey Teacup and Opinion Atelier. Jacqueline Conway, co-founder of the SFDF says, “Opening night is when we take over the restaurant and turn it into a high-end fashion event. Runways will be set up throughout the venue and models will go from one runway to the other. People in the crowd will have a close-up view of fashions wherever they are seated. This is a new style of event for us. There will be some really cool and creative visuals that go along with it and Bottega Trattoria will be serving up some great food.” On Saturday June 6, the Saskatoon Fashion and Design Festival will partner with Midtown Plaza and present ‘In Fashion.’ “There’s going to be full fashion show presentations that pull looks from the mall. They will also feature works from local designers,” says Conway. “We’ll demonstrate how you can style local design with clothing you can find at Midtown Plaza.” Fashion shows will celebrate the theme “Around Town, Downtown and Uptown,” running from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the top of every hour. A $5.00 reservation fee guarantees your seat and an exclusive Midtown swag bag! The James Hotel will host a VIP event party Saturday evening to show appreciation for all the sponsors, designers, models and everyone who has contributed to making the SFDF a success. “Our biggest event of the weekend is on Sunday, June 7 at River Landing,” says Conway. “It will be an afternoon of fashion, art, culture and design. Spring collections will be featured, including designs by Hillberg & Berk and Prahsik. There will be an opportunity to buy designs you see in the show. We’ll have live hair and make-up production by Angles SalonSpa and La Biosthetique. A live art show will be presented by Rouge Gallery. There will be a Mercedes Benz

photo booth. Fashion shows will run throughout the afternoon.” In previous years, the Saskatoon Fashion and Design Festival has attracted approximately 2,000 people to the River Landing site. “We’re projecting an increase this year. It will be the grand finale of the weekend,” says Conway. The festival was co-founded in 2010 by Mandy Pravda and Jacqueline Conway. “We began by building a network and doing fundraisers. Since then, we’ve been able to expand our network and bring on more sponsors. The event started with a small festival at River Landing and we continue to build on that. We’ve worked with some great people along the way and they keep coming back.” Events like this are one of the reasons why Saskatoon can boast of such a lively arts and culture scene. “It’s become a big passion for both Mandy and I, producing events that make the city a cooler place to be. We promote some great local designers in the province and take a lot of pride in that. We’ve seen designers grow throughout the process as well. Every year, more come on board who want to pursue fashion as a full-time career,” says Conway. Saskatoon Fashion and Design Festival also works with the Academy of Fashion Design, offering opportunities for the students to show their work. This is part of their Sunday show, outside at River Landing. For more information about the Saskatoon Fashion and Design Festival or to purchase tickets, visit their website at saskfashion.com.

LESSis BETTER!

Create a minimalist wardrobe BY HILARY KL ASSE N O F S P S PECIAL P RO J E C T S

“I have nothing to wear!” is a fairly common lament from many women whose closets are actually stuffed with clothes. It’s often heard in the panicked moments trying to dress before an event. Suddenly the contents of the closet appear woefully inadequate. As women we’re good at rationalizing our fashion purchases, but a jam-packed closet does not equal a satisfactory wardrobe. Enter the minimalist wardrobe. Minimalism as a lifestyle is gaining traction and it has reached the fashion world as well. Creating a minimalist wardrobe means moving away from excessive consumerism -- the “too trendy, too cheap, too much” kind of impulse buying from random trips to the mall for a sale. It may be hard to believe that less is better but it’s true! Mackenzie Firby says it’s true for her, since opening Two Fifty Two Boutique last year. The shop specializes in distinctive women’s fashion brands that you might find in New York City. “People now think I must have a million things in my closet,” says Firby. “Actually I have less clothes now than I did before I opened the store.” That’s because she’s being more selective. Building a minimalist wardrobe means acquiring the essential items that will deliver you from desperate measures when you’re in a pinch and serve you every day. A key component is items that mix and match. “Most of the brands we carry design their lines so that pieces will fit together,” says Firby. Another component is ensuring you have the basic “staple” items. The “little black dress” for example, goes for miles, says Firby. A good fit and clean cut dress can be dressed up or down and worn many different ways – with a jean jacket during the day and a bolero jacket and heels at night, or for an edgier event, a little leather jacket. It’s about the pairings and the accessories. Of course everyone needs a great pair of jeans, a great

pair of black pants, and a great blazer possibly in leather (or if you don’t like leather, vegan leather). “We talk a lot about ‘desk-to-dinner,’ that you should have an outfit that you can wear to work and to go out in the evening.” Everyone has a style. One of the real dangers of impulse buying is ending up with something that isn’t your style. “If I buy something that isn’t in that realm, it takes work to want to wear it because I don’t feel super comfy in it. You’re either not going to wear it or you’re not going to feel good when you wear it.” If you spend $50 on four or five items, and you’re thinking, ‘Oh, I shouldn’t have bought that,’ you might as well have bought only one really good item that you are going to wear, says Firby. Fit is critical as well. A minimalist wardrobe is all about quality. Designers who create quality garments use better everything – materials, hardware, zippers and dyes that last longer. “The integrity of the garment is better.” Firby said a special guest came into the shop the day before she talked to us. “Shannon Tweed came in to shop. We didn’t know she was coming and she said, ‘I heard that this was the only place I should come.’ And I was like, ‘well that’s not pressure’!” But solutions were found. They brought out about 20 bags for Tweed to find one to go with the outfit she chose for a media appearance. Firby encourages people to spend less on trendy things (like kimonos right now) and more on classic and timeless items. Classic doesn’t have to be boring if you change it up with different accessories or pairings. For spring, look for pops of colour in everything. For fall, look for a new, somewhat edgier leather line at TFT. With a minimalist wardrobe you’ll look better with fewer clothes. Choosing items that are more versatile and better quality, that fit you better and you can mix and match, will save you from desperate measures. “I never have the ‘I have nothing to wear’ moments anymore while looking at a closet full of clothes!” says Firby.

ENDLESS PASSION FOR FASHION Spring 2015 finds the perfect complement with black-and-white prints, polka dots, stripes, florals and graphic patterns, as interpreted by Canada’s own Joseph Ribkoff. The designer’s SS2015 collection is truly diverse, ranging from stellar dresses to collectible separates. Unique style elements set Joseph Ribkoff’s designs apart: peek-a-boo openings with a hint of contrast to ensure that perfect balance; textures that refresh, embellish and emphasize the appearance; prints that resound with rhythm and contrast. No one knows women like Joseph Ribkoff! Explore the Joseph Ribkoff SS2015 collection today at The Sandbox in the City, located on the corner of Broadway Avenue and 9th Street.

ON OUR COVER For those occasions when no ordinary dress will do, Two Fifty Two Boutique suggests this show-stopping stretch lace cocktail dress by the one and only Diane von Furstenburg (DVF). Our cover model Sheena Behme is breathtakingly beautiful in DVF’s best-selling Zarita party dress, featuring three-quarter length sheer lace sleeves, scalloped lace detailing at the hem and an exposed zip back. This exciting shade of fuchsia is the perfect pop of colour for spring, while being elegant and classy. The ‘wow’ factor of this dress requires few accessories. To complete Sheena’s look, Two Fifty Two Boutique adds a divine black clutch by Kate Spade, Kindra glitter pumps by DVF and a Botkier gold bracelet with crystal hinge. Two Fifty Two Boutique is one of Saskatoon’s newest destination boutiques, located in University Heights square. Visions Salon and Spa provided the hair and make-up artistry for our cover model Sheena Behme. Stylist Shawna Fairbairn chose the new ‘Sombre’ colour trend for Sheena. Shawna selected a base shade close to Sheena’s own natural colour – warm brown – then added lots of highlights close to the face and fading into the back. The tawny blend of highlights and lowlights enhances Sheena’s beautiful green eyes. Shawna also focused on Sheena’s eyes when completing her make-up application, selecting natural shades of cream, green and brown to create a romantic look. Sheena Behme appears on our cover, courtesy of She Modelling in Saskatoon.

BOUTIQUE CHIC Fresh fashions with unique style

GENTR I ES Tammy Kehoe, owner of Gentries in Scotia Centre, loves the easy elegance of the Spring/Summer collections she is featuring this season. The colour story is fresh and exciting, she says. “There are a lot of understated brights, pale pastels, nature-like naturals. Blue is everywhere, from aquamarine to classic blue.” Cheery patterns bring added flair to the season, anchored by classic nautical stripes and the ever-popular polka dot. Sassy gingham was on every major runway and Kehoe has brought in some enticing gingham pieces that are perfect for summer outings. Balmier temperatures allow us to escape the monotony of pants and heavy sweaters and indulge in the easy elegance of the dress. “We have so many great dresses this season including fabulous florals, with big, bold prints. Everyone is loving the long, flowing dresses. It’s a relaxed, comfortable option for summer,” says Kehoe. “We’ve brought in wonderful dresses from our French label, Saint James; Eileen Fisher and Komarov out of L.A.; and Periphery, a great Canadian line.” Long, flowy skirts are also in abundance at Gentries, creating great mix and match opportunities. Crisp linens, delicate chiffons and classic white lace are among the enticing fabrications Gentries’ shoppers can select from. “The fabrics are lighter, fresher, more delicate,” says Kehoe. Seventies-inspired touches of fringe and mesh add textural interest. “Choose the looks that speak to your personal style,” concludes Kehoe. “Spring has never looked better!”

You’re not into cookie-cutter fashion. You want to stand out from the crowd in styles that are as unique and individual as you are. The independent fashion boutiques of Scotia Centre offer one-of-a-kind shopping with coveted labels from the fashion capitals of the world.

KLASSIQUE At Klassique Designs, spring-fresh pastels are in full bloom. “I have my whole front window done in the pastel colours right now and it looks very, very fresh!” says Kajoo Kamal, who founded Klassique over three decades ago. “We haven’t had such wonderful pastels for a long time,” she says, citing minty shades of blue, green and pink as her favourites. “Mix these icy pastels with neutrals of ivory or white or metallics and they look just beautiful!” There’s a new sense of femininity to the Spring/Summer collections that has Kamal enthralled. “I love how feminine the clothing is becoming again. There’s a little bit of an ’80s feel, but it’s the best of the ’80s. The fabrics are so much better. It’s a season where we have lots of beautiful things available to us!” Summer’s lightweight floaty fabrics look even better when juxtaposed against the strength of a statement leather jacket, advises Kamal, who has brought in some “amazing” coloured leather jackets by three different Canadian designers: Rudsak, LaMarque and Neto. “Buy one great leather jacket as your investment piece, add a few tops, and you’re set!” says Kamal. “Women in the know are returning to investment dressing. They recognize how much better a garment that is well-made and beautifully cut feels and looks on the body, than one that is ill-fitting.”

Klassique is known far and wide for its exceptional selection of evening wear, for occasions ranging from prom to red carpet galas. This year’s grad season sees Saskatoon’s young women going all out for style. “They’re wearing some of the most exquisite and glamorous gowns that we’ve ever had in!” says Kamal, who features evening wear by such renowned designers as Tony Bowles and Alyce Paris. “One trend we’re seeing in evening wear are the illusion tops and backs. The dresses are cut low at the front or the back, but there’s a lot of mesh detail so it’s wearable. It’s very edgy looking without being provocative.” For many young women, gown shopping at Klassique is their first experience with an independent, full-service fashion boutique. “Shopping in a boutique is like having your own personal fashion consultant. The staff have the expertise and the experience to suggest which fashions are going to look the best on you,” says Kamal. “They get to know you. They can call and let you know when a piece comes in that’s just right for you. A fashion consultant at a boutique can help you build a wardrobe that will really work for you. It’s all about customer service,” says Kamal.

FLOWER POWER

TIPS

Nothing goes together like flowers and springtime! Gentries in Scotia Centre looks to German fashion brand Tuzzi for this delightful floral patterned dress worn by Laura Evenson. Watercolour hues of pink, orange and green on a white background are a fresh interpretation of this season’s floral trend. The easy-care, easy-wear fabric blend is super comfortable and travels anywhere. For chilly evenings, Gentries suggests this gorgeous Tuzzi pink pashmina as a stylish wrap. Spring has arrived in style, at Gentries in Scotia Centre.

This season’s nautical motif is very popular. A sweet nautical stripe is a classic, simple look. Pick up a shirt or a simple summer dress in a stripe. It’s the fresh look for spring! TAMMY KEHOE, GENTRIES

THE BOYFRIEND’S BACK! BY JEANNIE ARMST RO N G S P S PECIAL P RO J E C T S E DIT O R

As the fashion pendulum swings away from skin-tight leggings and jeggings, designers are heralding the return of the boyfriend jean. I asked style guru Juanita Schindel, co-owner of Broadway Avenue’s iconic Sandbox in the City about the boyfriend jean and how to wear it. Q: HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE BOYFRIEND JEAN? JS: The boyfriend jean is a little bit different than the last time it came around. It’s a little more fitted in the butt and the leg and is looser from the knee down. It gives more shape to the body. That’s how I would define this round of boyfriend jean. Q: WHAT FASHION BRANDS ARE DOING IT BEST? JS: Probably Silver and Mavi. The price point is reasonable − around the $100 to $120 mark. That’s a reasonable price to pay for something that might be a trend for a season or two. The washes are nice. The fabrics are little bit lighter weight and they’re nice and stretchy. Q: WHAT BODY TYPE IS BEST SUITED FOR THE BOYFRIEND JEAN? JS: The boyfriend jean can be worn by pretty much any body type. If you’re really short, it’s not a good fit. You can still be petite, but if your legs are short, then the boyfriend jean won’t be a good look for you unless you’re going to wear a really high heel. If you have a balanced type body, it will work for you. The boyfriend jean looks best on women who are average height or taller. Q: YOU’VE FOUND THE PERFECT PAIR OF BOYFRIEND JEANS. NOW WHAT DO YOU WEAR IT WITH? JS: There are a few different ways to wear the boyfriend jean. It looks great with a fitted T-shirt, worn tucked in. You can also wear it with a bit of a longer tunic, as long as the legs of the jean are really fitted to the knee. The boyfriend jean is best worn with more structure on top because it’s looser on the bottom. Footwear choices can include flipflops, flats or wedges. If your top piece is more structured, such as a shorter-length fitted blazer, pair it with a heel – a pump or a sandal. If you’re dressing it up, the boyfriend jean also looks good belted. Q: IS THE BOYFRIEND JEAN BACK FOR A SHORT INTERLUDE OR IS IT A KEEPER? JS: I think the boyfriend jean will be around for a while, but I think the fit will keep evolving. The fit on this season’s boyfriend jean is more workable than in the past. The old boyfriend jean was baggy in the bum and had the paper-bag waist. It really did look like you were wearing your boyfriend’s jeans. For 2015, the boyfriend jean is refined and contemporary. We do think it will be around for a while. It almost takes the place of the capri, because it’s such a flattering length on so many women. It focuses the attention on the ankle, which is the most slender part of a woman’s leg. It can be much more flattering than a capri.

TIPS

Take everything out of your closet. Try each piece on, then get rid of everything that is out of date or ill-fitting. Put the items back one at a time in organized categories: pants, dresses, tanks, jackets, etc. If you have a favourite item that doesn’t match up with other wardrobe pieces, take “it” shopping with you.

FUN! FLIRTY! FABULOUS! The boyfriend jean is back at The Sandbox in The City. The Sandbox’s own Chelsea O’Leary shows off one of the season’s best interpretations of the boyfriend jean, by Mavi. She pairs her selection with a colourful boho-inspired chiffon top with crochet and embroidery detail by Miss Me, in keeping with this season’s Seventies vibe. A stacked heel kicks an otherwise very casual outfit up a notch. Chelsie’s choice is a navy strappy sandal by Franco Sarto. Her artisan-style purse is by Spanish fashion leader Desigual. Colourful chandelier earrings and matching bracelets complete Chelsie’s laid-back Saturday look – all from The Sandbox in The City, located at the corner of Broadway Avenue and 9th Street.

SUMMER 2015 COLLECTIONS ARE NOW HERE.

JUANITA SCHINDEL & COLLEEN TAIT, THE SANDBOX IN THE CITY

Spring Wardrobe Challenge: Choose three items from your closet that you’re excited to wear this spring − then come up with three new ways to wear each piece. Put on some music, pour yourself a glass of something delicious and have some fun in your closet. COOL YOUR HEELS B Y S HARON MOS L E Y CREATORS .COM

Buying a pair of shoes for a new fashion season is one of the best ways to instantly put some spring in your step. Shoes can transform any outfit as fast as you can say “Aah, what cute shoes!” Here are the trendiest ways you can step out in style right now: GET A LEG UP. Gladiator-inspired shoes have been fighting for a front-row fashion seat for some time, but this spring, the cagey Mediterranean look is getting tall and leggy in knee-high sandals and even high heels. Ditch the sweltering boots and engage in a cool new way to wrap those legs up for the warmer weather ahead. SLIDE RIGHT IN. Easy does it. The slip-ons this season have all the cozy comfort of a Dr. Scholl’s sandal, but embellished with a twist. In minimalist crisscross straps or banded with belts and buckles, the traditional sports-inspired slide gets dressed up or down, depending on just how much you want to slip-slide away. SKIM IT FAST. Another way to slide into spring. The pointed-toe skimmer is a statement-making shoe that gives you the ease of a flat, but dressed up with new details. Laces and ties are a major way to give these flats some oomph; fringe is another trendy adornment. ROLL WITH RUBBER SOLES. The thicker the sole the better this spring. Hit the streets in the newest “flatforms” that will definitely put a bounce in your step with bold soles and bright colours. These are the ones you’ll want to wear

with those wide-leg pants and romantic ‘70s dresses.

DO WICKED WEDGES. These are the shoes for tough girls or girls who want to add a little rockstar glam to their wardrobes. Think plaftorms trimmed with metal studs or chunky wooden heels. Girls, these are your go-to dancing shoes this spring. GO RETRO TO A T. For the femme fatales in the group, the T-strap shoe is a way to indulge in some old-fashioned footwear that has been reinvented for the diva in all of us. Buckle on a pair of these little jewels and give anything you wear some sexy sizzle. In kitten heels, they’re perfect for work; in stilettos, they will jazz up any cocktail dress. BE CHIC WITH SNEAKS. Comfort reigns again with this footwear trend. Whether it’s all-white sneakers trimmed with gold or a pair of colourful floral slip-ons, you’ll love wearing these new trendsetters that will get you around the city or the beach in style – no limping allowed. BLOCK IT WITH COLOUR. Shove the blacks and the browns to the back of your shoe closet and bring out the bright new hues for spring and summer. Check out all the artsy architectural designs inspired by Mondrian graphics. These new shoes will definitely put you in a great mood. BOOTS ARE BACK. Yes, the weather may be warming up, but these new boots are made to take a little fashion heat. Ankle boots with chunky heels in luxe leathers, soft suedes and exotic skins are doing double duty all year long. Now, that’s footwear with a future!

BOLD CHOICES above Spring 2015 is all about boldness! Express your personality through your footwear and make a great impression, with stylish choices from Step Ahead Shoes. EXPRESS YOURSELF in spring’s newest trends BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG SP SPECIAL PROJECTS EDITOR

In 2015, fashion is really coming into its own, says Saskatoon stylist Kate Matthews, who frequently consults with Midtown Plaza, Saskatchewan’s premier shopping destination, on their many fashion events and photo shoots. How will fashion archivists describe the style trends of the 2010 decade? “The style of the 2010s has been brewing over the past couple of years, and this year it’s finally come into its own as a unique and recognizable look. The look that’s going on right now is the one that’s going to be referenced as the 2010s,” says Matthews. “It’s a normcore, post-hipster, futuristic, really individual look. It’s exciting. It’s the democratization of fashion, where everyone does their own thing. Designers are now listening to what’s going on in street fashion. It’s an interesting time in fashion,” says Matthews. “To me, fashion is about self-expression and having fun!” Matthews shares her favourite looks for the season after exploring the stylish options at Midtown Plaza: DENIM & LEATHER

Denim is a year-round wardrobe staple, but it’s definitely having a moment this spring. “There are some interesting sihouettes in denim. All the designers have their own interpretations. We’re seeing denim onesies, A-line denim skirts. Boyfriend jeans are back, but a more tailored, feminine take. I’m looking forward to finding my perfect pair,” says Matthews. She offers a word of caution if you opt for a denim onesie; don’t wear those overalls with anything else farm-related! Coloured leather is also in the spotlight for Spring/Summer 2015, she adds. All the fashion basics are available in the season’s favoured shades. It’s a great way to update and add versatility to your wardrobe. PUT IT IN NEUTRAL

Shades of blush pink and pale taupe are vying for attention with multiple hues of blues as Midtown Plaza fashion retailers embrace the season’s new neutrals and pastels. “There’s lots of white and blue – it’s a classic combination I really love. Navy is big this year. It’s a great colour to wear to work or for casual times. I’m excited to try an all-white outfit this season!” says Matthews. For the most flattering results, look for

white pieces that have good linings and a more structured construction. Neoprene is a great choice, she adds. “It’s thick, richly textured and looks expensive – even though it isn’t!” SEVENTIES VIBE

“The Seventies trend was big on the Spring/ Summer runways in all four fashion capitals: New York, London, Paris and Milan,” says Matthews. At Midtown Plaza, that trend translates into boho-style ethereal floral prints and lavish touches of fringe. Wear only one fringe piece at a time, advises Matthews. A fringed purse is a great option that won’t break your fashion budget. “I’ve seen a couple of fringed skirts that are really beautiful. Just remember to wear the skirt with something simple.”

STATEMENT DRESSING At Midtown Plaza, Saskatchewan’s premier shopping destination, you can curate a spring-fresh look that is totally unique to you. Stylist Kate Matthews created this stunning look for model Kelsey Munro, pairing a classic white crop top from Dynamite with a Design Lab floral print pencil skirt from Hudson’s Bay Company. Must-have accessories include a Skagen white ceramic watch with silver accents from Spareparts, along with silvertone earrings and a fashion ring from Le Chateau. Kelsey’s cool mules are by Sam Edelman from Town Shoes. It’s a flattering and versatile look that Kelsey can wear day or night. Add a structured blazer and you’ve got a great look for the office. Pair it with a light leather jacket for an evening out on the town. Kelsey’s glamorous hair and make-up artistry is by Tammy McLean, owner of Angles Salon Spa in Midtown Plaza.

UTILITARIAN

“I love when a season has contrasting trends: utilitarian vs. feminine,” says Matthews. “It’s really interesting to see how people combine the trends together and achieve their own individual style. One way is to wear a floaty floral dress with a tougher-looking utilitarian jacket.” The jumpsuit is a fashion piece that straddles the Seventies and the utilitarian trends. “If you can find the right one, it’s such a great piece. I’ve got too many little black dresses; I’m now on the hunt for the perfect onesie!” says Matthews. Designers have also turned pockets into a fashion statement, on everything from dresses to cargo pants. COOL MULES

Shed those winter booties and slip your feet into Spring’s newest footwear from Midtown Plaza. “We’re fortunate in Saskatoon to have so many great footwear retailers,” says Matthews. “This season, I am really loving the mule. It’s a style that has come out of the Seventies trend but this time around it’s more edgy and modern. It’s really the statement shoe of the season – whether you’re going for glamour or edgy.” Flats remain a fashion essential for Spring/ Summer. “There are lots of pointed flats this season, with ankle straps. Gladiators are still going. I didn’t think they would last this long. There’s a different form this year: knee-high gladiator sandals. Givenchy was showing kneehigh gladiators over tight white pants,” says Matthews. Platforms are continuing their towering reign, says Matthews. “They’ve gotten even higher, which is another Seventies thing. They’re scary-high this season!”

BLUES FEST These hues hit all the right notes!

B Y JEANNIE ARM ST RO N G SP SPECIAL PROJECT S E DIT O R

There’s a blues festival going on in men’s fashion this season! The easiest way to bring your wardrobe fashion forward for the sunshine season ahead is the addition of a blue suit, says Gordon Burgess, owner of Caswells Company Ltd., a menswear store with over a century of history in attiring Saskatoon’s best-dressed men. Men around the world are joining the ‘blue man’ group, according to the fashion trade publication, Business of Fashion (BOF). In Europe, retailers are reporting a 30 per cent increase in the sale of blue suits. One report in the New York Times reveals that blue is outselling black four to one when it comes to suits. Esquire Magazine’s style expert Jeremy Langmead confirms, “Blue is fresh, slimming, easy to wear and goes with everything.” “Colour is a great way to brighten and lighten up for summer,” says Burgess. “In recent years, we’ve seen a lot of black, charcoal and navy in men’s suitings. This season, we’re seeing a lot of blues and silver greys. In sport coats in particular, blue is the big colour − particularly the mid to brighter tones like royal blue.” In addition to amping up colour choices, menswear designers have turned to textured fabrics and smart detailing like contrasting top-stitching to bring a new dynamic to their suit lines. “One of the lines we’ve brought in from the Netherlands, Van Gils, has been very successful for us. The contrasting top-stitching on their suits tends to be highlighted and shows nicely. For example, there may be a brighter blue suit with silver or beige top-stitching,” says Burgess. In a tribute to ‘70s style, the three-piece suit is enjoying a revival this season, adds Burgess. “We first started seeing vests about a year ago. Now we’re getting a lot more requests for three-piece suits. Van Gils has included them in their collection, as has the Coppley Company out of Hamilton, Ontario. Coppley is one of Canada’s top makers. We use them a lot for our custom suit program. They do a ‘mix and match’ program where the customer can buy one, two or three pieces – a blazer, pant and vest – to put their look together.” Whether you opt for two or three pieces, your choice of suit silhouette is equally important. “The slimmer

silhouette continues to dominate this season, particularly in lines such as Hugo Boss,” says Burgess. “It’s a younger look. The jackets are a little shorter. The pants are a bit trimmer, a little narrower on the bottom.” Selecting the right fit for your body type is essential, adds Burgess. “When you’re buying fashion, the key is to buy it from a store that knows which model of garment is going to fit you properly and look good on you. The trim fashion isn’t for everybody. Pairing the models of the clothing to the body shapes is much more important now that you’ve got trimmer-fitting suits. Not every shop does that well, and you definitely can’t determine that when you’re buying off the internet. That takes the personal touch.” Shirts are also taking on new style for spring and summer and are a great way to refresh wardrobe pieces from a previous season. “We’re seeing shirts in small geometric prints. They’re made to be worn either with or without neckwear,” says Burgess. Another shirt trend which originated on the American east coast has now expanded across the continent. “Coloured or printed shirts with contrasting white collars is a look associated with Boston, New York and Washington. It’s a look that’s gone mainstream and has been very well accepted here, particularly among our younger customers,” says Burgess. Going tie-less is always appealing during the summer months, emphasizing the ‘casual’ in ‘business casual.’ When wearing a suit without a tie, Burgess says it’s important to add a pop of colour with a pocket square, crazy coloured socks or a unique lapel pin. Burgess says customers are responding enthusiastically to the new spring trends and colours. “We’re really excited about the current season. We’ve been in our new location for a full year, so we’ve gone through one complete rotation of seasons. Because our new location has a more contemporary theme, we’re attracting a lot of younger consumers in addition to our loyal customer base. It’s allowed us to diversify our product lines to an even greater extent than before, to meet the needs of the younger, more fashion-conscious consumer.” Discover the latest in men’s dress and casual attire for Spring/Summer 2015 at Caswells, now located at 144 Second Avenue South.

KNOW YOUR KNOTS Men have been donning ties for generations, and during that time several different styles of knots have come into and fallen out of fashion.

The first step in wearing a tie is finding one that fits. Individuals who feel their ties come out just a tad too short once the knot has been tied may have to move from a standard 59-inch tie to an extra-long tie, which is a few inches longer. When buying ties, men should add their height in inches to their neck size in inches. If the sum of those measurements exceeds 91 inches, a longer tie figures to be a better fit. Ties come in many colours and patterns. A tie should complement the ensemble. Choose a tie that features the same hues as the suit and the shirt you intend to wear. Complementary colours include those that are opposite on the colour wheel. Therefore, blue and orange goes well together, as does purple and yellow. A brightly coloured tie can add some flair and personality to an ensemble. Once a tie is selected, choose a knot that will fit your personality and the style of dress. Here are the options: FOUR IN HAND KNOT: This is one of the more common

knots. It creates a narrow, slightly asymmetrical tie knot. It looks best on men with shorter necks but can be worn by anyone. PRATT KNOT: The Pratt knot, sometimes referred to as the

Shelby knot, is fairly wide. It fits well with wider neckties made from medium fabrics.

ON OUR COVER Jazz up your spring and summer wardrobe with this year’s hottest hit: the cool blue suit from Caswells Co. Ltd. Our cover model, Gregg Bamford, is attired in a China blue wool suit by Z Zegna of Milan, acclaimed for its contemporary slim silhouettes and urban edge. Playing off the blue tones is the geometric pattern slim-fit shirt by Eton of Sweden. Gregg individualizes his look with a pop of colour: orange silk neckwear and a pocket square, also by Eton. Handcrafted fine calf leather shoes by Allen Edmonds are the finishing touch to this flawless ensemble. Stop in at Caswells’ new location at 144 Second Avenue South and discover why they’ve been ‘the’ store for men in Saskatoon since 1911.

WINDSOR KNOT: This knot is wide and triangular. It can present an air of confidence and is a classic, conservative knot. It looks very good when paired with a spread shirt collar. Men who have long necks can benefit from a Windsor knot because it will shorten the perceived length of the neck a bit. HALF-WINDSOR KNOT: This is a variation on the Windsor

knot, which creates a knot that is a little more narrow. It is effective with any dress shirt and can be used with somewhat wider neckties. BOWTIE KNOT: Most men rely on the bowtie knot for

formal, elegant occasions. It is usually reserved for black-tie affairs worn in conjunction with a tuxedo. Practice is usually needed to perfect these knots. It is understandable that after a knot is created you may just want to loosen the neck on the tie to remove it and leave the knot in place until the tie is used again. But this can shorten the life of the tie. It is essential to properly remove the tie each and every time. This means reversing the steps you did to tie the necktie to prolong its life. Once the tie is off, roll the tie around your hand to create a tube-like shape. Then store the tie in a drawer this way. Make every attempt to protect the tie from damage. It will help protect your investment and keep your outfits looking sharp. (MNS)

SPRING TREND REPORT

MEN ABOUT TOWN BY JENNIFER JACOBY-SMITH OF SP SPECIAL PROJECTS

Men have got the blues. At least the fashion trend that’s been building for a few seasons is continuing with Saskatoon men’s fashion retailers seeing an explosion of the cool hue. “Navy is making a comeback,” says Anthonys Fashion For Men owner Anthony Graham-Cutts. “Grey is still the strongest colour (in suits), but navy is making a comeback. Overall, the palette is shifting that way.” It’s not just navy that’s making a colourful splash in men’s stores – azure, sapphire and other brighter versions are making their way into suits, ties, and shirts. Even plum is making waves. “Blue is the colour,” agreed Elwood Flynn at Elwood Flynn For Men Clothing Store, “rather than black or charcoal.” Shirts are also showing off with patterns like checks, stripes, and geometric designs. Some patterns are incorporating more than one colour for a lot more pop. “They have a little bit more pizzazz to them than normal dress shirts,” explains Flynn as he points to a wall of folded Ingram shirts – a line of Italian cotton shirts which comes in a variety of colours and patterns. At Anthonys, Graham-Cutts stocks what he calls hybrid shirts – “the shirt that has enough collar to put it with a tie and it hides a lot of the details.” The shirts come in a variety of colours, some with buttons and stitching in bold contrasting colours. “It’s a style that has a lot of value, we feel, because it’s a dual purpose shirt,” explains Graham-Cutts. “You can dress it up or down.” The funky contrasting colours add an extra dimension to the shirt. For the right occasion the cuffs can be rolled up to reveal their secret patterns. It’s a fun shirt whether dressed up with a tie and suit jacket or left to be the centre of attention by itself.

BON VOYAGE Model Ryan Walter demonstrates how to travel in style with a two-button, two-piece Hugo Boss suit from Elwood Flynn. This 100 per cent wool suit comes from Hugo Boss’ high performance travel line, complete with convenient security pockets. The vibrant shade of China blue is right on trend. Ryan has paired the suit with a cotton dress shirt by Canada’s Lipson Shirtmakers in a soft blue check. A 100 per cent silk tie and matching pocket in gold and sapphire by Dion Neckwear to adds the right flourish. Before your next journey wander over Elwood Flynn For Men at 200 Third Avenue South downtown.

Flynn notes their casual five pocket pant continues to outsell their regular pant. With denim styling, but upgraded fabric, the pant offers comfort and style. Paired with a light sport coat, the look can take you through your work day and out for drinks at the pub. Or even a dinner with someone special. Vests have also made a huge resurgence according to GrahamCutts. Many suits are now available with the third piece, which gives men a few more options when dressing up. “The vests allow you to wear that tie or not and still look dressy,” says Graham-Cutts. “Vests have started coming back in the last couple of years and not always dressy, sometimes a bit more casual, sometimes a bit of texture.” Accessories are still all the rage. Funky socks, bright pocket squares, and cufflinks are all new ways for men to make a statement with what they’re wearing. Such special touches can also elevate a look for a special occasion. “We encourage guys – whether for a wedding or a grad – it’s a one shot deal, do something that takes it out of your everyday wear,” Graham-Cutts. Flynn encourages men to embrace something a little different when it comes to shoes. The cognac colour provides a perfect match for a navy or blue suit and some styles come with a monk strap instead of laces for added interest. For men looking to make one key addition to their wardrobe this spring, the unstructured blazer is Graham-Cutts’ go-to fashion piece. With less bulk and usually made from lighter fabrics like linen or cotton, the unstructured blazer is perfectly stylish as transitional outwear and can easily pair with a nice pant or jeans. “It’s kind of the Swiss army knife of

fashion – it can work in any situation. It allows you to dress up without overdressing and dress down in certain situations without underdressing,” he notes. Whether men are looking to find a new fashion path or add some blues to their spring wardrobe, Saskatoon’s mens retailers have all the style they need. “Guys are becoming more globally aware of fashion and they’re seeing more options and they’re exploring that a little bit,” says Graham-Cutts. “Saskatoon is definitely growing. With the influx of people from other areas of the country and other countries, we’re seeing more influences come in. It gives guys a lot of different options.”

INVEST IN A VEST! Model Dustin Graham-Cutts looks fresh and stylin’ with the latest trends from Anthonys Fashion For Men. Dustin pairs a grey textured dress pant by Matinique with a pinstripe Polifroni BLU dress shirt in one of the season’s hottest colours – plum! Add in the latest trend in menswear – a charcoal plaid vest by VITO – and a funky Andrew Fezza plaid linen and silk tie and Dustin is ready for whatever his day brings. The black cotton trench coat by Selected and Stacy Adams black leather cap toe dress shoes provide a strong finish. Accessories like a Web silver tie clip, Eros grey silk pocket square and black leather belt by Ratchet are also available at Anthonys, located at 234 First Avenue South.

No-fuss couple braves makeover challenge BY HIL ARY KL ASSE N OF S P S P E C IAL P RO J E C T S

They’re a couple that has glimpsed celebrity – he as a rock drummer and she as a swimsuit model. Christine and Byron Grant met through mutual friends who helped the stars align. They’re beautiful people, but they don’t fuss with their appearance much. The exception would be Byron who’s been known to rock out his hair for live performances. This is the story of their makeover transformation, captured by our ‘magic man’ photographer Jeff Lyons. They looked fine before, but not as fine as they would look later.

Life! Sun! Fun! The SkaterGirl evokes the freedom of summer, presented by Angles SalonSpa and inspired by the very latest in European style trends from La Biosthetique. The spirited SkaterGirl collection celebrates individuality and pays homage to those who seize the day. Rebellion meets romanticism in the shapes and colours that are subtly merged, playfully shining in the sunlight. “Jump on board” this season with the talented stylists and aesthetic team at Angles SalonSpa, Saskatoon’s only Premiere La Biosthetique “Total Beauty Concept” salon, conveniently located in Midtown Plaza. Christine and Byron’s transformation was dynamic. The knowledge and skill of the professionals at Angles SalonSpa and Ultimo was apparent, making Christine & Byron celebrities for a day.

BEFORE

REBELLION MEETS ROMANTICISM

AF T E R -G L O W

Slim and fit, Byron landed the right genetics to produce great cheekbones! When Christine first saw Byron she thought, “He’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” Byron has been a hair guy as long as he’s been a drummer, which is all his life. He was known to “puff it up” Rod Stewart style. His hair once fell to mid-chest, but in recent years it has gotten progressively shorter. He agreed to go even shorter for the makeover. “With stylist Lisa McSweeney’s expertise, we updated his look to something more on trend, blending his white rocker highlights into a softer modern textured blonde,” said McLean. “His haircut was fabricated with a more classic styling in mind for day but with internal texture that could still be rocked out by night!” When he’s not working his day job at Envirotec, Byron still rocks out at night, but it’s mostly for fun now, he says. The most successful band he played in was called Jezebel’s Kiss, probably about five years ago. “We actually got distribution deals in Canada, the States and Europe, but it just never took off after that. It’s not as big of a deal as what people think but it was pretty exciting.”

This former swimsuit model has kept herself in great shape. But between caring for four children and working long hours at Maple Leaf, Christine has forgotten what pampering can be like. Bring on the team from Angles SalonSpa! Hair that was nearly 100 per cent grey at the roots, with an interesting cowlick was transformed into a vibrant, fresh new ‘do.’ Angles partners with La Biostetique out of Germany and France. Angles owner Tammy McLean is a platform artist and educator for La Biosthetique, bringing back hot trends from her trips to Europe. Styles this spring are inspired by skatergirls in Venice Beach in the 70s – very free flowing and unstructured. “My job as a stylist is to take what’s on the runways and make it wearable,” says McLean. Christine was up for anything, so McLean coolly suggested pink, purple, or green. Joking aside, she chose to warm up the look with a copper beige baseline and for the top, a richer copper and a golden blonde. The colours were chosen to complement Christine while the cut represented a European trend pattern. The result was a spectacular transformation. McLean offered a trick to tame the cowlick – blow dry the hair directly across it instead of going with it, so it flattens out. “When she flips it back over the other way, it’s going to have a nice smooth arc.” Christine has limited time to do her face so McLean showed her a new silky waterproof eye shadow that she can apply with her fingers; no fancy makeup brushes required. Her lipstick is one of the new Cream and Gleams. It’s a lip liner, lipstick and lip gloss all in one, ideal for women on the go. Her nails were into the corals, a bright shade to invoke spring. Angles is the only La Biosthetique Total Beauty concept location in Saskatchewan. Christine teared up when she saw her new look. “She wants to look trendy and amazing and beautiful, but it has to be something that she can keep up every day,” says McLean. Now she has more quick-fix ideas on how to get the look herself.

Ultimo is a fashion-forward boutique in Saskatoon, known for its unique and on-trend wardrobe selections. Owner Barry Flynn brought his considerable experience and great eye to selecting some stellar fashions for Christine. “Christine has kept herself in tiptop condition,” said Flynn. “She’s not an easy girl to fit because she has really wide shoulders and a small waist. She’s built like an Olympic swimmer and she’s got muscular legs. It was fun to take her and just really highlight some of her attributes.” Christine’s Mexx suit in a beautiful shade of chambray with a slight silver cast worked as a natural showcase for colour. When Flynn helped Christine find an outfit last Christmas, she said she hadn’t worn a dress in probably three years. She wore the suit well! A Mexx blouse with a hint of oriental florals in baby blue and soft peach completed the ensemble and tied in with her newly manicured coralcoloured nails. Christine relaxed into a casual ensemble featuring a fabulous Bel Fresh jacket from Belstaff. “Bel Fresh is a worldwide patented fabric with a breathable membrane coat that’s windproof and waterproof.” Dry cleaning is not recommended because it will seal up the special membrane, reducing the breathability of the garment. Christine loved her spray-painted skinny jeans from Cheap Monday out of Denmark. The total look had her name on it – she looked fantastic!

Byron’s Dirk Bikkembergs blazer from Ultimo showcases a big trend in men’s fashions: hi-tech athleisure clothing. “It was originally developed for the sporting world and then adapted for dress clothing for the 21st century,” said Ultimo owner, Barry Flynn. J. Lindeberg pants are super 120s wool with two per cent lycra. Byron’s casual jacket is a 16 ounce French loop terry cotton from Belstaff that’s been coated with stretchable rubber. It’s a windproof, waterproof coat with breathe-hole eyelets in the armpits for air circulation. “Byron is in pretty good shape and a lot of clothes fit him well,” said Flynn. Add some aviator sunglasses and “wow!” A small Los Angeles company called THVM crafted the hand-made jeans Byron wears. “They look kind of like scraped leather, so I think they dye the jean and take a spatula or something to take them down to the next colour,” said Flynn. There’s no two alike of these hand-finished jeans. These days with fashion, comfort is king. The go-to look for social events is a short fitted blazer, nice dark clean jeans and an open collared shirt, according to Flynn. Suits with no stretch in the fabric are being relegated to the back of the closet. Another option, 3-D digitally printed sweat-pant jeans, look exactly like jeans but the fit is much better. This trend toward greater comfort through stretch fabrics allows guys a slimmer look all around, as both of Byron’s looks reveal.

EUROPEAN UNION Ultimo Euromoda presents fashion sculpted for the modern man. For this look worn by Matty Youngworth, Ultimo curates choice pieces from leading European designers, beginning with a fitted black sweater jacket from the renowned Sport Couture collection of Belgian fashion leader Dirk Bikkembergs. The white Dagger shirt from luxurious Egyptian cotton is teamed with a Sloane vertical stripe tie. The modern-cut low-rise stretch wool dress pant is sourced from Scandinavian fashion house J. 1993. The goal of Faces West is to bring together models and performers to learn, network, and encounter top industry professionals. Over the years Obrodovich has seen the industry embrace a broader definition of beauty. So someone who thinks they may not fit into the typical mode of what is beautiful might be the next ‘it’ girl or guy. Aside from the international modelling industry, there are always lots of local opportunities for models as well. Local retailers and businesses often need models for their advertising. Modelling work can be found in television commercials, print advertising and local fashion shows. In addition to representing local and international models, She Modelling continually offers classes. Geared for two different age groups – seven to 11 and teens – the classes cover such topics as how to do makeup, skin care, best hairstyles and building self-confidence. “Confidence is so important whether it’s in school or for your future (career),” notes Obrodovich. “It’s a good time in your life to start building your confidence.”

You never know where it might happen next, says Mary Obrodovich, owner of She Modelling in Saskatoon. Charles Stuart discovered Coco Rocha at an Irish dancing class. Rocha went on to become one of the most sought after fashion models. It might be hard to imagine that the next Paris Fashion Week runway sensation could be at a Blades game or attending high school or working in a coffee shop in Saskatoon, but Obrodovich says you never know. There’s no reason why the next Rocha couldn’t be found here in Saskatoon. On June 6, She Modelling will be hosting a free audition with Stuart here in Saskatoon. It’s something Obrodovich does twice a year and everyone over the age of five is welcome – no modelling experience is necessary. With decades in the business, Stuart knows what agencies are looking for. Those individuals selected will travel to Faces West – a modelling and talent convention started in

She Modelling also offers professional modelling classes where they teach technique – such as runway walking and camera movement. Both types of classes run throughout the year, including the summer months. Summer classes are condensed into a week-long course. “The classes we teach, they will know everything they need to know to model locally or internationally. And besides they’re really fun. They’re just fun classes,” Obrodovich explains. While Obrodovich admits international models have to fit certain parameters, local models are always needed. “For local modelling we use all sizes, all heights, and all ages,” says Obrodovich. “That is very important to know. That’s what the clients in Saskatoon need.” The free audition with Charles Stuart goes June 6 at She Modeling. For more information, Obrodovich encourages anyone interested to call the agency. “Don’t be shy and just come and talk to us. I welcome everybody. It’s really a fun industry. Everybody that I know that models just loves it.”

ST. THOMAS MORE has more to offer! B Y HILARY KLAS S EN OF SP S PECIAL PROJEC T S

The past joined the future at St. Thomas More College (STM) when they completed a substantial addition to their facility in early 2013. Now, stalwart stone walls, ancient copper doors, and aged wood bannisters blend with modern enhancements like slick hi-tech classrooms, improved street exposure and a lovely central atrium. The StarPhoenix chose the college as the site for our spring fashion photo shoot because of the beautiful diversity of visual backdrops throughout the facility. Old meets new rather seamlessly, through this superbly-designed addition. The appeal of STM goes beyond the visuals however. Under the skin is a warm community of students and faculty who participate in a unique learning environment. “We find that a lot of students enjoy taking courses in the college here because it feels like they’re in a more intimate or community environment,” says communications and marketing director, Jacquie Berg. Students appreciate the smaller class sizes and attest to a greater level of professor-student engagement. Although STM is a Catholic institution founded by Basilian fathers in 1936, it attracts a diverse student body and is welcoming to everybody. Courses, faculty and students are not exclusively Catholic. “St. Thomas More is a very inclusive community that fosters student growth as whole persons,” says Berg. The college offers over 220 arts and science courses through the year, which are applied to University of Saskatchewan degrees. Many students from various colleges at the U of S, including the College of Nursing, Commerce and others, take arts and science courses at STM. The 20,000 square foot addition offers several more floors of classroom space, more study space for students, research offices and houses all the administration offices. Before completing the addition, up to 30 per cent of courses were being taught off-site. Now, Berg says, up to 90 per cent of courses are taught in the STM building. In the past two years, there has been an increase of about

20 to 25 new courses. Classrooms now incorporate the latest technology and can accommodate remote teaching. “Even the study centres for the students are very modern with big screens, to accommodate group projects or individual study with laptops connections. Their popularity supports the successful set up.” STM is also known for its commitment to social justice and community service learning. Students have opportunities to participate in community service, expanding what they do in the classroom and combining it with service involving various community organizations. Students are encouraged to study and travel abroad, perhaps to Ecuador, the Dominican Republic or the Ukraine, and may be able to apply credits earned toward a U of S degree. The Centre for Ukrainian studies sends students abroad to the Ukraine every summer. The student experience will be enriched by the high quality of the faculty at STM, who are well-known in their areas of specialization, according to Berg. “These are very knowledgeable professors who are often being called upon as experts by the media, in the areas of political studies, psychology and beyond,” she says. Another advantage of being a smaller college is the opportunity for students to participate in arts like the Glee Club or the Drama Club in a more close-knit environment. “If they are finding it a bit overwhelming to be way out there in the bigger campus, we welcome students to at least try a course at STM and hope they will see the difference. A smaller college is a big plus for students that are new to the city or the campus and are just starting out,” says Berg. Department heads from the STM and the U of S enjoy a collaborative relationship. Perhaps the new hub of the college, other than the cafeteria with its reputable chef, is the atrium. “The architectural design has created a nice melding place of old and new.” Also facilitating the transition between old and new is some stunning new multi-cultural artwork which symbolizes STM’s inclusivity – a message of welcome that speaks volumes and needs no words.

GLOBAL DEMAND PROMPTS NAME CHANGE

Gatsby era influences local designer B Y JE N NIFER JACOBY-SMIT H OF SP S PECIAL PROJEC T S

For those who’ve visited her boutique overlooking Eighth Street, Trish Hoffart’s Options by Trish has become a destination for affordable fashion jewelry. However, her audience has continued to grow forcing the fashion designer to change the name of her store. Starting in the summer of 2015, Options by Trish will become 19th and Co. Fashion Jewelry. “The big news is the name is changing, but not the designer,” Hoffart explains. To facilitate customer’s demand for her designs, Hoffart has found herself shipping jewelry all over North America and beyond. So to make it easier for her customers – especially those who’ve never been to the prairies – Hoffart will also launch an e-commerce site. The new website will make it easier for customers to find what they’re looking for. The new name – 19th and Co. Fashion Jewelry – captures Hoffart’s obsession with the early 1900’s and the whole Gatsby-era. “Look at how beautiful the clothing was then. Even the vehicles were posh!” she gushes. No one could doubt the appeal of such a rich era of fashion with the intense popularity of television shows like Downton Abbey. The influence of the era can be seen in the exquisite detailing, rich hues and several tassel-style necklaces. Launching her spring jewelry lines Hoffart is delighted by the many natural stones featured in her collections. The use of sliced agate and druzy provides colourful hues and natural sparkle. The natural stones come in a variety of colours and are

naturally glittery. Combining them with 24-karat gold plated chains, as in the Mykonos line, creates a very glamorous Euro feel. The rich yellow gold pairs beautifully with sparkling blues and delicate lilacs. Hoffart still offers plenty in a brighter gold (16-karat gold plated) and sterling silver. Another line getting some rave reviews is the Blush line – using rose gold. Hoffart is one of the few designers in Canada using rose gold with bigger rocks and semi-precious stones. Rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings are all part of the beautiful rosy-metal. Blush has become one of Hoffart’s more popular new lines. Another big thing for the season is stacking or layering multiple bracelets or necklaces. When done with pretty pastels and lovely pale moonstones and rose quartz, the effect is one of understated elegance. “It’s really incredible all the things you can do when you mix in all the semi-precious stones,” comments Hoffart. “I think this is the most excited I’ve been in my career. This has got to be the most beautiful season. It’s already been accepted. The store has been really, really busy.” With a beautiful new season started and a fresh name coming, Hoffart says it feels like a brand new phase in her career as a jewelry artist. “I feel like I have just gotten started. I’ve got so many designs and ideas coming.” Regardless of the name change – one thing will always remain the same – Hoffart’s commitment to providing affordable luxury for every woman and every occasion. Hoffart’s boutique is located at #207, 3521 8th Street East. Her store hours are Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Inspired by the sparkling azure blue waters and gold beaches of Greece, this lovely sliced blue agate necklace is an example of Hoffart’s Mykonos line and sure to be an eye-catching centrepiece of your spring wardrobe. LEFT: Photo supplied by Options by Trish

TIME FOR A CHANGE!

BY ALYX MAR IO N & S HAW NA FAIR BAIRN

Spring has sprung and people want change! This year we are seeing a big change in hair length. It is the year of the “lob”! A long bob is a great spring cut, still being long enough to tie back or style with soft beach waves. Achieving the perfect wave is super simple with the help of Surface’s Swirl sea salt spray, a great product from the Surface haircare line created right here in Saskatoon by the founders of Visions Salon and Spa. If you are more adventurous, a shorter cropped look is also hot this spring. Lengths vary from super short and sassy to a softer more angled look with a long fringe. These are both achievable styles with Surface Texture Paste for a fun, piecey style or Taffy Whip which is great for a smoother texture with flexible volume. Popular colours this spring include light pastels ranging from pink to blue, used either as a full colour or as a highlight to add a little punch to your hair! Also this season we have seen the “Ombre” evolve into the “Sombre.” This is a softer, more natural version of the

popular style. In the world of Sombre, we are seeing lots of glistening golds and glossy caramels. Spring is the perfect time to revise your look from washed-out to shimmering and bright, or long and heavy to light and airy! Marion and Fairbairn are stylists with Visions Salon and Spa.

CHAMPAGNE BLONDES HAVE MORE FUN! Model Alexandra Swidzinski is totally on trend this season with hair and makeup artistry by the talented team at Visions Salon and Spa. Stylist Paige Voz brightened Alexandra’s hair with highlights, then applied an over-all pastel champagne colour to bring her fashion forward. Alexandra’s short assymetrical cut is perfect for spring and can be styled in many different ways for a variety of looks. Paige used Taffy Whip by Surface haircare to create Alexandra’s textured, tousled waves. Makeup artist Shawna Fairbairn opted for a soft, youthful look to accentuate Alexandra’s natural beauty. Transform your look for spring, with a visit to Visions Salon and Spa, located downtown at the corner of First Avenue and 25th Street.

PRO BEAUTY TIPS Beauty without the bake FOLLOW THESE STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO GET YOUR GLOW ON!

BY J E A NNI E A R M S T R O NG SP S P E C I A L P R O J E C T S E D I T O R

Now that sun-tanning is recognized as a bona fide health hazard and undisputed cause of aging skin, do we have to forego that golden glow of summer? Paulette Schumacher, owner of Merle Norman in Scotia Centre, offers a sunsafe solution for ‘beauty without the bake’: self-tanners. Self-tanners have come a long way since the days of drugstore lotions which produced uneven results and left your palms and knees a tell-tale bright orange. Schumacher likes to use Merle Norman’s Self-Tanning Bronzing Foam to create or maintain that perfect summer tan. “I find the foam mousse is easier to apply than a lotion,” says Schumacher. “When selecting your self-tanner, follow your natural skin tone. If you’re fairskinned, select a fair-to-medium tanning product. If your complexion is more of

an olive, then use a medium-to-dark tanner. Always follow your natural skin tone.” Don’t use too much product, she advises. Dispense a dime-size dollop of selftanning foam or lotion. It’s better to build your tan, doing applications every other day or so, until you reach the desired shade of bronze. When applying self-tanner to your face, start with the areas of your face that would tan first: your forehead, nose, chin and apples of your cheek. “Start there and work your way out. Whatever is left on your hands, feather into your hairline and along your jawline,” says Schumacher. Allow the self-tanner to dry, following the product instructions. “I always recommend allowing it to dry a little bit longer than the label states,” says Schumacher. “After the self-tanner has dried completely, I apply my moisturizing foundation and continue with my regular make-up.” When applying self-tanner to the body, she’s found that a light dusting of baby powder after the drying time will ensure that the tanner doesn’t transfer onto your clothing or furniture. Wait at least six hours before showering or swimming, to allow the self-tanning product to do its job. Don’t have time to wait for a self-tanner to work? Here’s another great tip from Schumacher. “I take loose bronzing powder, or scrape a bit out of a compact of bronzing powder, mix it in with my body lotion and apply.”

1 CLEANSE Cleanse your skin with your usual product. If you’re planning to shape your brows or have waxing treatments for hair removal, do this several days in advance of applying a self-tanning product. SUNSHINE GIRL Merle Norman’s new summer colour collection combines the right amount of soft colour and neutral tones to create a fresh and modern look, as worn by Paulette Schumacher, owner of Merle Norman in Scotia Centre. The dusty lilac brightens the eye and the shimmery sea green adds a fresh modern accent. The neutral tones add dimension and depth to the eye creating a balanced and fresh look. You can even wear a summertime smokey look with this limited edition eye palette of six colours. Merle Norman’s false eyelashes are the perfect way to finish off any look. With three styles to choose from, you can create the best summer look for you! Discover summerfresh colours at Merle Norman in Scotia Centre.

2 EXFOLIATE Use a facial or body scrub to exfoliate dead skin cells, paying particular attention to elbows and knees, where the skin is usually drier, says Schumacher. This will promote a more even, longer-lasting tan and help to avoid streaks and spots.

Our goal is to provide superior service while respecting both personal health and the earth.

Visions invites you 3 APPLY SELF-TANNER “Always apply your self-tanner from the bottom up,” says Schumacher. If you’re doing a full body application, start feet first and move up.

to experience the difference a locally owned, family run business makes!
