vows to wow!
“Will you marry me?” Now that the question has been popped, it’s time to start planning your big day by attending Saskatoon’s largest and best known wedding expo: Bridal Spectacular! On Sunday, January 11, from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., TCU Place will be transformed into a lavish bridal fantasy land, featuring a vast array of displays and exhibits by the province’s leading wedding specialists. Exciting new features at this year’s Bridal Spectacular are sure to wow brides-to-be and their guests, says Mary Obrodovich, organizer of the event for three decades in Saskatoon. The owner of She Modelling, Obrodovich always brings something new to the Bridal Spectacular party. For next Sunday’s show, the buzz is all about the new ‘Beautiful Bride Glam Room’! Inside the Glam Room, expert hair stylists, make-up artists and estheticians will be on hand to ‘glam up’ brides who are visiting the show – with make-up demos, hair artistry and pamper treatments. “It’s a chance to try out new make-up colours and techniques, learn about hair style options and more! There will be lots of interactive, hands-on displays in the Glam Room. It’s going to be so much fun!” says Obrodovich. No appointments are required; just drop into the Glam Room anytime between 12:30 and 3:00 p.m. The highlight of every Bridal Spectacular is the opulent fashion show, featuring the latest wedding fashions by Brides ‘n’ Belles and Tux & Tails, along with chic honeymoon wardrobe options from Klassique

For EXQUISITE FASHIONS & BRIDAL, former Miss Teen Canada 2013 and SHE model Jill Martin, shines in a fashion-forward couture gown of ivory/light gold ombré lace over light gold, by Maggie Sottero. As seen in this standout gown from Maggie Sottero’s new collection, subtle colour is a leading trend in bridal wear for 2015, a softer alternative to traditional white. The gown’s form-fitting silhouette is accented by a detachable grosgrain ribbon belt with a Swarovski crystal brooch. The gown’s inner corset back closure ensures a perfect fit and is finished with a zipper. Discover the newest bridal trends today at Exquisite Fashions & Bridal, located at 1202 Quebec Avenue. www.exquisitefashions.ca. Designs. The fashion show is presented runway-style, featuring professional models from She Modelling. Popular local band, The Hot Tamales, will get everyone dancing in their seats. Before and after the fashion show, there is time for the happy couples to explore over 70 different exhibits and displays by a diverse range of wedding vendors. In one afternoon, under one roof, brides and grooms can meet with a complete spectrum of wedding professionals – photographers, florists, caterers, cake artists, musicians, DJs, travel agents, financial planners, rental companies, venue providers, limo services, jewellery artisans, bridal boutiques and more! Bridal Spectacular offers a pleasing mix of long-time exhibitors as well as newcomers to Saskatoon’s wedding scene. Among the new exhibitors at Bridal Spectacular is Team Beachbody (fitness and weight loss), Rodan & Fields (skin care and aesthetics) and The Glen at Crossmount, an exciting development under construction just outside of Saskatoon. This innovative project will feature a charming reception hall surrounded by landscaped gardens. Obrodovich says there are many advantages to planning your wedding in person at Bridal Spectacular, as opposed to making
risky on-line purchases. Wedding blogs abound with horror stories from brides who received shoddy replicas of designer gowns ordered online or who had to scramble to replace décor items that never arrived. At Bridal Spectacular, couples have the opportunity to view and sample actual wares, while observing the professionalism and personalities of the service providers. “It’s always better to talk to a business owner or service provider in person, instead of trusting your big day to online transactions. At Bridal Spectacular, you can actually see the products, meet and get to know the staff. You’ll find our exhibitors are very helpful and have lots of great ideas to share. You can’t get that sort of expertise online,” says Obrodovich. Admission to Bridal Spectacular is $10 per person, and includes the chance to win the Deluxe Bridal Package valued at over $10,000. Exhibitors at the show will also offer individual draws for prizes worth thousands of dollars. Brides can register and purchase tickets online at www. picatic.com/bridalspectacular2015. You can also register in person at the starred (*) merchants listed on the back cover of Weddings Wonderful.

Couples who share nuptials at the Saskatoon Inn receive a complimentary newly renovated Jacuzzi suite on the wedding night, as well as the “INN the mood” package.
Saskatoon Inn gets glamorous makeover by Hilary Klassen of SP Creative Features
They’ve waited 34 years for this and the transformation is amazing! The first major renovation at the Saskatoon Inn has created quite a stir. “We’ve done all the guest rooms, all of our meeting space. The lobby was the last key piece and it’s just finished,” says Glen Coulter, food and beverage director. “We’re very excited about it!” The renovation has injected new life into the hotel. Management chose not to mess with the open garden area at the heart of the facility. “The courtyard is our signature piece. That’s what we’re known for and we very deliberately stayed away from making any changes to that because it’s kind of the soul of the hotel, down in that centre area,” says Coulter. The updated contemporary style has met with widespread approval. They’re seeing an uptick in corporate travel and their group conference business. “Our guest rooms always were the biggest in the city, but now they’re finally modern and contemporary. We’ve expanded our fitness facilities so we’ve seen the corporate market respond very positively to that,” says Coulter. The Saskatoon Inn has always had a successful wedding business, but Coulter anticipates the changes will attract more wedding traffic as well. Not only are all the ballrooms updated, hotel sales manager, Larissa Katsiris says they spent a lot of money getting the latest high-end audiovisual equipment, so couples can indulge their techy side. “We certainly find these days with weddings there’s a lot of technology,” notes Coulter. Gone are the slideshows of yesteryear. The Inn now has HDMI connectors, places to connect your iPod
WEDDINGS W O NDE R F U L
for instant wedding music, wifi and screens, and an in-house audio-visual company available anytime to assist couples with this. “We feel new and modern,” says Coulter. Katsiris says all of their ballrooms can be converted into wedding space and used individually or in a combination. The hotel has a lot of flexibility as a wedding venue. They can accommodate small intimate weddings right up to well over 500 guests. “One of our more stunning and popular rooms is the Canadian Ballroom with beautiful high vaulted ceilings, chandeliers and floor to ceiling drapery. Our Ballroom C, with its curved white staircase, can be used with the ceremony and later converted into a reception space.” The courtyard gets used a lot for more intimate ceremonies as well as the champagnes area, which accommodates up to 80 people. Executive Chef Doug Hindford joined the Saskatoon Inn nearly three years ago. Hindford has his CCC designation (Certified Chef du Cuisine), the highest certification for a chef in Canada. “We’re very proud of our wonderful and fabulous executive chef, Doug Hindford. He’s very good at taking special requests and tailoring meals to accommodate different dietary requirements or indulging those who want something a little off the beaten path,” says Coulter. “He has an aboriginal background and is one of the few CCC aboriginal chefs in the country. He brings that ability to do a contemporary take on some of the traditional meals and foods of this area from the aboriginal population.” Hindford is also incredibly involved in the community.

Our groom, Luke Baird, suited up for his big day at Anthonys Fashion for Men, located downtown at 234 1st Avenue South. The bride is sure to say ‘yes’ to Luke’s handsomely tailored three-piece, peaked lapel charcoal suit by S. Cohen. The wedding’s theme colour is expressed through the mauve tight-check dress shirt by Poliforni BLU and a mauve and charcoal silk pocket square by Eros. The charcoal paisley bow tie by Eros is a smart touch. Luke completes his look with a black reversible plate buckle belt by Benchcraft and black captoe dress shoes by Stacy Adams, all from Anthonys Fashion for Men. www.facebook.com/ anthonysfashionformen.

The ‘status’ wedding is no longer the status quo, says Fred Chlan, AIFD, founder of Flowers by Fred in Saskatoon. “The idea of an over-the-top status wedding has little appeal for today’s brides. Originality and authenticity are what this generation of brides and grooms are seeking.” The couple’s quest for individuality is also being reflected in their floral choices, says Chlan. “A prairie crocus can have just as much importance and value as an exotic orchid flown in from Thailand.”
ABOVE: Fred Chlan, AIFD, interprets bohemian chic with this freestyle semi-crescent bouquet. One large hydrangea anchors this wedding offering, which uses a single green cymbidium orchid, dendrobium and mokara orchids, along with natural heather, hypericum and pepper berries. A polished geod is embedded in the sisal. RIGHT: Designer Veronica Warkentin captures the sentiments of the day with this non-traditional posy bouquet. Many brides like to have family heirlooms pinned to their bouquets to proudly display their heritage. The pins and brooches adorning the blushtoned roses give this bouquet a glamourous vintage feel.
page 20
Fresh from the garden Garden variety blooms are one of the strongest trends in 2015, says Ida Liu, who purchased Flowers by Fred from Fred Chlan two years ago. The ‘modern garden’ bouquet combines touches of organic, contemporary and vintage style, says Liu, who mastered the art of floral design in Hong Kong. “The feeling is very natural.” Chlan adds, “It’s romantic and whimsical. Garden flowers are very popular right now. That doesn’t mean we’re getting away from orchids. We’re seeing a mix of garden flowers with exotics, one next to the other – stemmed orchids over top of hydrangeas for example.” Baby’s breath is enjoying a revival, adds Liu. At the autumn Bridal Spectacular at TCU Place, Flowers by Fred created spectacular centrepieces featuring tall, slender vases topped by clouds of baby’s breath. “They attracted a lot of attention at the show,” says Liu. Hand-crafted details, such as beautiful embroidery or touches of lace, add artisan flair to the garden-style bouquet. The blooms can be further personalized with treasured family mementos, such as antique cameos, brooches, lockets or vintage buttons.
Designer Veronica Warkentin combines traditional Saskatchewan taste with modern style. Wheat, iconic to the prairies, is combined with seedy eucalyptus for texture. Pink oriental lilies bring feminine flair and colour, while a lace and burlap ribbon handle creates a vintage feel.
Pretty pastels For 2015, soft pastel tones have edged out last year’s neon brights, says Liu. “It’s all about the blush tones. When you see these colours in your bouquet, it touches the heart.” The romantic palette includes blush pink, light lavender, creamy ivory, pale peach, soft green and buttery yellow. “The colours are desaturated,” says Chlan. “It’s sort of a vintage photo look, with an old world type of feel. There’s a sense of history and authenticity to it.” The blue-and-white wedding is also trending for 2015, says Chlan. Inspired by coastal waters, this colour combination is both sophisticated and elegant. Floral choices include white orchids, calla lilies, roses and peonies, paired with blue cymbidiums, delphinium or hydrangea. Bohemian chic For the free-spirited bride and groom, not worried about conforming to tradition, there’s the “Bohemian chic” wedding theme. The “boho” bouquet is freestyle rather than formal, full of whimsical wildflowers and adorned by touches of moss, agate stone, barnwood, crystals, antique metals or upcycled finds from a local thrift shop. Monograms are also popular. “It’s contemporary vintage,” says Chlan. The bride’s hair is often worn in loose waves, topped by a floral crown, wreath or handcrafted headpiece. Instead of proceeding down the aisle through a traditional arch, the boho bride may enter the ceremony through an open door, usually vintage in style and adorned with a floral garland. “The presence of a door is a strong visual,” says Chlan. “You walk through the door alone or with your father and then you walk back out with your groom.” Rethinking the classics For 2015, even classic bouquets are getting an update, says Liu. “This year, many brides are opting for the cascade-style of bouquet, but they’re smaller in scale and lighter than in the past.” Chlan says the new cascade bouquets could be likened to floral sculptures, with interesting details like burnished metal strands
Folded copper gives form to this organic contemporary sculpted wedding offering by Fred Chlan, AIFD. The hanging mosaicstyle bouquet features white dendrobium orchids, pink pepper berries, pink hypericum, cut segments of dried bamboo, and brown/pink mokara orchids, interwoven with clear crystal quartz and citrine stones.
extending through the blooms. Even the traditional round posy bouquet is taking on a new dimension of style, he adds. “In their latest bridal wear collections, designers are showing lots of gowns with shoulder straps. Esthetically, a round bouquet doesn’t work as well with a gown that has straps. It’s got to be altered a bit with a visual pattern or element that runs across the diameter of the circle.” Make it your own! Saskatonians are no longer following the trends, they are setting them, says Chlan. “We’re seeing it in the design world, in music, in the media. The same is true of weddings.” “What’s important is how you make it your own. That’s an important discussion to have during your wedding flower consultation.” He advises wedding couples to book their floral consultation as early as possible. “Saskatoon is growing so quickly! Venues are limited and we’re now seeing people getting married on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.” For more information, visit www.flowersby fredsaskatoon.com, or call (306) 384-3003.

Bride inspired by Alice in Wonderland
Eamon gets swept off his feet on his wedding day.
by Jennifer Jacoby-Smith of SP Creative Features All photos by Krissy Haines.
When planning her wedding, Maren McAuley says she knew exactly what she wanted – anything but the norm. “I wanted to do the anti-what-our-friends-weredoing kind of wedding. I didn’t want super traditional.” Maren, 35, and now husband, Eamon, 29, drew inspiration from one her favourite stories – the fantastical tale of Alice in Wonderland. The unconventional duo wanted their wedding to reflect their unique personalities and her love of the nonsensical adventure. “We wanted our wedding to be fun. We wanted everyone to leave and say, ‘Wow!’,” says Maren. The wedding took place at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Saskatoon on October 4, 2014. Maren and Eamon chose a hotel to host both the ceremony and the reception because they had so many guests coming from out of town. The hotel made it easier for everyone to simply enjoy the event without having to worry about navigating their way to the next venue or finding a parking space. “It’s just nice that people can come, they can stay there, they can just do everything there. Nobody has to leave,” Maren comments. Each bridesmaid chose a different style of purple dress and carried purple and orange flowers. For her wedding dress, Maren chose a strapless ivory lace confection with a satin ribbon belt. She says she was looking for something without a lot of bling that captured a vintage vibe. When it came to decor and other items, Maren wanted to focus on using local businesses. “We tried to go with as many local businesses as we could. And (we found them) by word of mouth.” The couple also opted to do the pictures beforehand so there was no time gap between CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

the ceremony and the reception. Their nuptials took place at five o’clock in the afternoon and then revellers simply moved down the hall for supper, followed by a dance. When it came to finding a photographer, once again, word of mouth led the McAuley’s to the sister of a bridesmaid – Krissy Haines. “Her company name is Creative and Chaotic, so you had to know there wasn’t going to be a lot of traditional photos,” notes Maren. “And I didn’t want a lot of traditional photos. We wanted more fun. More us.” The photos are anything but stiff and formal poses you find in a typical wedding album. One of the images shows Eamon being lifted off his feet by an umbrella. Another includes the wedding party running from the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man ala Ghostbusters. Stay Puft had a vital role to play in Eamon’s proposal. “Maren enjoys her ghost shows (on TV). I have a fairly nerdy room in the house and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is kept in there. I moved it to the centre of the room to try and get her to go into the room,” explains Eamon. Eamon’s had hoped to entice Maren to enter the room and inspect the wayward figurine, while he dropped to a knee. However, the ruse didn’t work and Maren stood stubbornly at the doorway with little interest in how Stay Puft found his way to the middle of the floor. Eamon eventually got down on one knee and proposed anyway. As a result, Stay Puft got a wedding invitation and by all accounts had a great time. As a nod to Alice in Wonderland, Cake My Day crafted

Coulter loves weddings because they’re all about joy and celebration, optimism and hope for the future. “We’ve always had an incredibly talented and professional team when it comes to handling wedding business but now we have this beautiful new venue to allow that team to shine even more. a top-hat-shaped cake pop along with little bags of tea as party favours at the reception. A Mad Hatter top hat also made the rounds at the reception. Guests were encourage to take photos while wearing the hat. Maren’s suggestion for new brides is to spread out the wedding planning. “If you try to do too much at once you’ll get major brain fog and then things get messed up. If you spread it out and take your time you get what you want and it’s not as much stress.” And in keeping with their laidback style, Maren says not to stress about the inevitable little snags that happen when planning a large event. The McAuley’s had to deal with a few last minute glitches and in typical fashion they found the humour in the situation. After replacing their marriage commissioner at the last minute, their new marriage commissioner continually mispronounced both of their names during the ceremony. Photos captured Maren and Eamon stifling giggles. “If everything had gone perfectly…” Eamon starts. “It wouldn’t have been us,” Maren finishes for him. “And we wouldn’t have any stories to tell,” he says. Maren nods, “And I loved our ceremony.” While Alice in Wonderland might now be everyone’s cup of tea, for Maren and Eamon it perfectly captured their exuberance and zany style. Their wedding was exactly what they wanted – a chance have fun and celebrate with those closest to them. In the end they created a memorable day for everyone.

Love Story
Star in your own
Joshua Baker of Sica Films enjoys the creative aspects of filming wedding videos, both on the special day and then bringing a uniquely talented eye to the editing process. page 26
by Hilary Klassen of SP Creative Features Your wedding day can be a bit like walking the red carpet. Cameras are flashing and you’re celebs for a day! Your life is under scrutiny. So are your shoes, your attire, your make-up and your dance moves. But these are friendly eyes, those of your cherished family and friends, people you’ve let into your love story. The day will stand out in your forever-after, but most couples say it goes by in a blur. That may be why more Saskatoon couples are choosing to have their special day captured in a cinematic professional wedding video. The eyes behind the video camera are friendly too. Two of those belong to Joshua Baker of Sica Films. Baker started Sica because he was craving a creative outlet. “It’s a very creative process, I think even more so than photography. With photography the creative process is on the wedding day. But for video you need to be creative on the wedding day, but then you need to be even more creative in the editing process,” says Baker, The process involves reviewing ‘miles’ of video and audio, piecing together the story elements, then choosing from a “zillion ways” to tell the story. Sica spends considerable time obsessing on this editing process before handing over the video of a couple’s love story. To guide them, they refer to a questionnaire indicating the couple’s musical and other preferences as well as how they want their wedding video to feel -- do they appreciate humour, romance, or a more artistic approach. Sica is good at blending into the background on your big day. “Our number one value, besides capturing the wedding day well, is having a good time with the couple, being unobtrusive, respectful and quiet, also being helpful,” says Baker. They’ve made it a habit to bring water and snacks for the couple, to help them through an all-day shoot. Sica is driven by a desire not just to record something, “but to do it in a way that is really beautiful and emotional.” The Tangerine Shop was all about wedding videos when they launched three years ago, and although they’ve branched out, they still love filming weddings. Owner, Michael Conlon, likes to tell a couple’s story through their own words. “I like the videos I make to be dialogue driven, so I’ll encourage couples to do personal vows and usually I’ll use those vows to drive the video.” If they don’t do personal vows, Conlon encourages them to do a letter exchange where they’ll write a letter to each other, exchange it the day before, and read it the day of. “I find that’s a great way to inject their personalities and story into the video. I’m still trying to capture all kinds of cinematic shots, but I definitely find using voice-over is a great way to make sure you’re really capturing them as a couple.”

Conlon says couples are demanding wedding videos that look like film; they want it to be really well shot. He enjoys the challenge of shooting quality film in fresh environments. Wedding days can hold other surprises. “Something’s always going to come up. That’s the most challenging aspect, but it’s also rewarding in its own way. The day of the wedding is always a rush, just trying to adapt to what’s going on, because there’s no second takes.” It’s live. At Strike Films, Jody Weiman says he has already fielded 30 to 40 email inquiries about his newly created wedding package for next summer. Both he and his girlfriend have recently quit their day jobs to take on the company full time. “We tried to create a package that included a lot of the main things people look for, but at a price point that a lot people could afford.” He says Strike Films expresses uniqueness and creativity through their editing. A 13 hour day of filming will create over 100 hours of editing. This involves using colour effects, carefully selected audio, visual effects and various elements that “pull the romance into the footage and bring viewers more into the film.” Something they hope to do more of in the future is love story videos, or films for people who aren’t getting married. Another hope is to begin creating couples videos where they go with a couple on a whole day excursion or a date night. “We just
film them in their element and add in different aspects to suit their relationship. We try our best to listen to our clients and just see what is most important to them in the end. No matter what project we take on we put every bit of ourselves into it,” says Weiman. Aerial wedding footage taken with a drone (or UAV – unmanned aerial vehicle) is another option that will likely gain momentum going forward. Joy Amistad’s 2014 wedding site in Mexico was captured by Miles Biblow, a friend of Amistad. Biblow and Tyler Krause, owner of Kappaco Films, edited the video. “I feel that having this video is something I will always cherish,” says Amistad. “I am so happy we have the video and would recommend it to anyone who is considering it.” In Toronto, some couples are sending wedding invitations by video. Saskatoon film companies aren’t seeing this type of request yet, but it may only be a matter of time. As a dynamic medium, a wedding video packs a lot of emotion. Videographers will capture moments the couple may not have seen, and well wishes from loved ones who might be gone in the near future. With a cinematic wedding video, you can recapture your love story anytime, and enjoy the inter-mingling of laughter and tears as memories assault you.

Décor
by Jennifer Jacoby-Smith of SP Creative Features
Top seven wedding
Each year one of the biggest trends brides watch for is colour. “The colours usually follow Pantone’s colour of the year and this year they set out a colour spectrum. It’s called En Plein Air, which means ‘in open air’,” explains Janel Edwards of Handy Special Events Centre. The spectrum includes a lot of pastel hues. In addition, Edwards is seeing blues making a comeback – from light and airy pastels to dark and mysterious navy – and corals and mints are still big. Many couples are choosing one area to focus on, such as the head table. Instead of putting money into many other décor items, the main focus of the event becomes the head table and more money is spent making that area look spectacular. “Last year mason jars with burlap and rustic was really huge,” notes Edwards. “ Now it’s moving more towards rustic with a twist. So it will be rustic centrepieces like leaves and Gold chair It isn’t always feasible or desirable to cover chairs provided by the venue with yards of fabric or decorations to pretty them up. These classy chairs come in three colours (gold, silver, and ice grey) with your choice of cushion and will complement whatever theme you’ve chosen. Décor tree (Handyman008) A six-foot metal stand may look unassuming, but it offers countless options for decorating. Add lights, flowers, foliage or fabric for a beautiful focal point behind the head table or use two close together to create an archway overhead.

stones mixed with a classic table.” With so many of the larger venues around Saskatoon booking up way ahead of time, many weddings take place in a smaller space. Edwards says they have experts that can walk a couple through how to decorate and light a smaller venue. “We have some cool lighting techniques that we can use to warm up a room, cool down a room, make the room seem bigger, and create a atmosphere without adding a lot of bulk to the room.” Talking to an expert at Handy Special Event Centre well ahead of time will ensure you get the décor you want. Edwards advises at least six to eight months, though shorter timelines can also be accommodated. Each year Handy Special Events Centre hosts a bridal open house as a chance for brides to have a look at the latest trends and talk to décor experts. This year the open house takes place on February 22nd.
Comfy chairs Making the bride and groom the centre of attention is easy with these lovely matching upholstered chairs. Plus the couple will have a comfortable spot to relax during the long, tiring day. Cupcake stand Cupcakes are still very popular in place of the traditional wedding cake. A cute stand will display them perfectly for guests to devour as the night wears on. Photo booth A photo booth will add hours of fun at your reception and you’ll have the pictures to prove it. Props can be customized for each wedding theme and Handy Rentals also provides a photo booth attendant to take care of everything.
Sweetheart table When it comes to planning the head table, often the bride and groom get caught at the ends of two tables pushed together. The sweetheart table makes for a more comfortable dining experience and focuses attention to the lovely pair in the middle. Sequin runner Texture and sequins are everywhere in decor these days, and these beautiful runners will add a touch of sparkle to any setting without adding a lot of bulk. The runners come in many colours, but this blush hue is proving to be very popular with many brides and complements a variety of other colours. page 28

Beauty TiPs For Brides By Lee Chillog of Rodan and Fields Every bride wants beautiful skin on their wedding day. Finding the right skincare regimen can give you a flawless complexion on your big day and beyond – whether you’re the bride or the mother of the bride. Lee Chillog, founding consultant with Rodan and Fields, shares her top five beauty tips for flawless wedding day skin. Treating the underlying cause of the problem is crucial and yields real long-term benefits. Skin conditions can be complex, but the solutions don’t have to be. So whether it’s acne, Rosacea, Eczema, sunspots, fine lines, we provide over the counter medicines and active cosmetic ingredients to create safe and effective formulations. Or you just want to look younger... I have the solution for you. Another great way to get flawless skin is an at-home exfoliating tool. Busy brides will appreciate a five minute treatment once a week with a good exfoliator tool can rid your skin of five million dull skin cells and promotes new skin growth from underneath. Don’t forget your neck, chest, hands and back. To promote the body’s own natural collagen and elastin to reverse signs of aging, another great tool is a micro-needle roller. This incredibly effective and convenient little tool painlessly pierces the skin thus creating a series of channels in the skin. Not only will your skin care line be absorbed for deeper effectiveness but amazingly the body then rushes collagen and
elastin to the area to repair the skin, resulting in fewer lines and wrinkles and making the skin appear firmer and tighter. Find a wonderful primer! You will be amazed at how much longer your makeup will last when you apply a primer before foundation. Primers also help to eliminate pores and fine lines. The last, most important tip is sun protection. If you do all the other tips but don’t wear sunscreen, then you’re wasting your time. For more details call Lee Chillog at 306-717-0986 or email skincaresolutions@gmail.com.

DESTINATION
Where in the world do you want to go? by Jackie Blakely for SP Creative Features A white dress blowing in the ocean breeze and toes in warm sand while saying vows has become a wedding dream come true for many couples. With the average Canadian wedding pulling family members from across the world to attend, traditional weddings are no longer the status quo. With so many worldwide destinations to choose from, happy couples make one of their first decisions together: where to get married. Susan Vincent, a wedding destination specialist and owner of Wedding Escapes.ca, has seen the rise in destination weddings over the years. She’s provided many couples with crucial advice to ensure a happy and stress-free destination wedding. “Plan ahead,” says Vincent. “A good starting point is a year in advance. Anything longer and a lot of changes can happen, leaving a lot of unhappy people.” Vincent says that flexibility is one of the biggest considerations in planning a destination wedding. “The couple has to be realistic and flexible. Things can happen and dates can change,” she says, adding that charter companies have been known to change departure dates by a day or two after a booking has been confirmed. To help brides and grooms select the perfect location for their destination wedding, Vincent begins by asking a few questions. “The first thing I ask the bride and groom is: do they like big resorts, or small, intimate settings?” Some couples opt for a big resort so they have more privacy and are not always together with their wedding party. Other weddings are more like a family reunion. Another consideration is the size of the wedding. Smaller weddings are less expensive so most couples keep the size of the wedding party to under 50. Another cost-saving idea is to opt out of the private or special dinners. “Smaller groups sometimes have more options,” says Vincent. “If you are over 50 people, sometimes they charge per head.” page 30
Cost is a big consideration in planning destination weddings. Couples can customize their wedding to include many finishing touches such as: flowers, photography, bonfires, transportation to wedding site, music, food and more. “You can build your own package, pick own flowers, colours… Some are free, some are not, but most resorts have websites to help you through the package selection,” says Vincent. “Each hotel has its own perks. You pick a base package and add or subtract to it.” Using a travel professional can not only free up time and be less stressful for the happy couple, but it can also cost less. “I wouldn’t do it alone,” says Vincent. “We have connections with hotels and tour companies and we know where the deals are and where to look. I’ve met the personnel and wedding coordinators and know them personally.” Vincent adds, “I’ve been doing this for 20 years.” Although planning well in advance is always best, Vincent has coordinated weddings with as little as one month’s notice. And with WeddingEscapes.ca, you have the option of payment plans, a bridal registry and even bachelor party coordination. The most popular destinations for Saskatoon couples are Cancun and the Mayan Riviera, but Jamaica and Puerto Vallarta are also popular. “Jamaica is easiest to get married in. It’s all English and no translation is required. Plus you can get married within two days of arriving,” explains Vincent. “In Mexico you need blood tests for a legal wedding, as well as translations for documentation. If you do a symbolic wedding you don’t need to do that much.” A lot of brides feel that they should send out invites, but with destination weddings Vincent suggests this may not be necessary. “It’s more of an e-mail or phone call invitation,” Vincent explains. The bride may send out a preliminary invitation to let people know what’s happening and then follow up with a more specific itinerary as resorts and flights are booked.
