SPECTACULAR 2014 SHOW BY HILARY KLASSEN OF SP CREATIVE FEATURES

Calling all soon-to-be brides, blushing, radiant, semi-terrified or otherwise! It’s time to indulge the dreams that have grown out of your romance. The Bridal Spectacular 2014 Show can help you make your wedding day just that - spectacular. With an established reputation earned over 29 years of successful shows, the Bridal Spectacular is known as THE bridal show in Saskatoon. “I love the whole thing!” says Mary Obrodovich of SHE Modelling, organizer of the event. Her passion about the event is evident in her voice. “It’s what women dream about from the time they’re little girls and it’s a big thing in a woman’s life. It’s just exciting and being a woman, I feel the excitement of it,” she adds. The event will showcase a plethora of ideas, products and services from the city’s finest wedding professionals for every detail of your planning. From jewelry to cakes, travel plans to insurance for your future home, and of course, bridal fashion, everything has been covered. The ever-popular fashion show will feature the newest designers’ fashions, from Brides N Belles and Tux & Tails. Professional models from SHE Modelling will reveal the finest attire, not just for the bride, but for the entire wedding party. Vintage style wedding dresses are a growing trend in wedding fashion. Vintage dresses and accessories will be part of the show, as well as a complete range of styles from traditional to modern and sleek – in short anything a bride might dream of. One of the new bridal fashion accessories this year is the arrival of fascinators, which are no doubt royalty-inspired. “It’s an old tradition made new, and the fascinators are very, very cute. Everybody looks good in them,” says Obrodovich. “It’s a fun new option used instead of the veil, which can still be paired with the traditional wedding gown.” The addition of ten to twelve new exhibitors at this show keeps things fresh and on pace with changes in the industry. The show’s long-standing reputation means Obrodovich is in an enviable position. “All these new companies just know to call us to be in our show,” she says. The Coffee Narrative is one of the new exhibitors at the show, the first business of its kind to participate. Brides and guests will be able to do sampling from Coffee Narrative and other exhibitors. Another new exhibitor is Photobooth Central. Try it out and decide if

you want it to be a fun part of your wedding. An amazing Deluxe Bridal Package valued at $9,000 will be won by one lucky bride. Included is a free rental from O’Brians Event Centre, a $1000 Rental Gift Certificate from Simple Sentiments, a $1250 Wedding Package from Elite DJ’s and additional valued prizes, not to mention thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes from over 70 exhibitors. Bridal Spectacular attracts around 1000 attendees each year. Of that, the male population is increasing each year. The Bridal Spectacular 2014 Show runs Sunday, January 12 from 1-5 p.m. at TCU Place. See www.bridalspectacular.ca or call Mary at 306.652.7484 for more information. Admission to Bridal Spectacular 2014 is $10 for brides or their guests. Brides as well as guests can register and purchase tickets online at www.picatic.com/ bridal-spectacular-2014 . You can also register in person at the starred (*) merchants listed on the back coverw.

If you’re looking for a great place for your wedding banquet that’s also affordable, look no further than the Brian King Centre in Warman. This ideal facility is one of the largest venues in the Saskatoon area, easily accommodating banquet seating for up to 400 guests. “We’re pretty much booked just about every weekend - sometimes two a weekend - we’ve had Friday weddings and Sunday weddings,” says Coralie Bueckert, community programs and special events supervisor for the City of Warman. What brings people to the facility is the freedom to make their own arrangements. “We’re not telling you who or what to have at your wedding,” explains Bueckert. “You bring in the DJ, bartenders, decorations, caterers and all that. We provide the facility and you make it the way you want it.” Bueckert will direct brides to various outside services, such as caterers, and will even remind them to get their liquor license and other items for the event that may be easily forgotten. “I had my own wedding there so I offer my own suggestions from that and from other events that I’ve planned and attended there,” says Buekert. The facility boasts a fully-equipped kitchen, a new sound system and a large stage that’s very accommodating for bands. They don’t charge corkage fees. The bathrooms have also been recently renovated and the centre has been painted throughout. “We also have a ceiling mounted projector with a dropdown screen, rented at an additional charge. It plugs right into the sound system,” explains Bueckert. The facility is in huge demand. “For 2014, we’re booked pretty much for the whole year. The first available Saturday is in November,” says Bueckert, who also boasts that there are already three bookings for 2015. “You can’t call two months before and think we’ll have an opening for you,” Bueckert warns. The multi-use facility is also used for fundraisers, conferences, workshops, and local association meetings. Bueckert suggests you call early to avoid being disappointed. The Brian King Centre offers a wedding package that runs from Friday at 6:00 p.m. to Sunday at 2:00 p.m. that accommodates gatherings for decorating and gift opening. For shorter events, there’s also a six-hour hour rental rate and a full-day rental rate. The facility has hosted hundreds of wedding parties and many of them are themed. “We’ve had Christmas weddings, western weddings – we’ve had a ton of them,” says Bueckert. The Brian King Centre staff do not attend any of the events. “We abide by the privacy of the booking. There are people on call, but not at the function.” For more information, call 306-933-2210. Happy STAYHappy

START Prepare for your future, not just your wedding day

BY HILARY KLASSEN OF SP CREATIVE FEATURES

If you’re a fan of the rom-com (aka romantic comedy), you know that everything leads up to the clincher which is – drum roll please – LOVE! Finally! The movies end at “sealing the deal,” the moment when undying love is declared, after much angst and self-doubt. But life’s not like that. In real life, the declaration of love is the beginning, not the end. Don’t get me wrong, undying love is a beautiful thing. Romance rivals some drugs for its mood enhancing ability to produce sustained highs. But how ready are we for life after the wedding? Typically, we do more to get ready for a driver’s license than a marriage license. We do a lot more to get ready for a wedding than a marriage. Learning marriage is life long, but acquiring some essential and basic skills can launch you past some common problems. “Completing a marriage preparation course significantly increases your odds of being satisfied in your marriage,” says Dallas Munkholm of Bridge Counseling Saskatoon. Bridge Counseling was started by Munkholm and his partner Susan Derry 14 years ago. They wrote the marriage prep course they use, partly in response to what they were seeing in marriages. “We decided it’s more fun to work with couples when they still like each other, than when they’re sitting on opposite corners of the room saying, ‘fix me’,” says Munkholm. The course is offered in three modes - to individual couples, a class, or online. The online course and the class take about 4 to 5 hours to complete. For individual couples it’s three hours, because of the more intensive personal attention. It’s no surprise that communication is one of the main skills needed in a marriage. But what does that mean? Some people think because they’re talking, they’re communicating. Maybe, maybe not. There are some better known skills that couples may have picked up like, don’t use always/never language, and do use “I” statements rather than the more accusatory “you” statements when communicating concerns. Bridge Counseling encourages mirroring as a form of communication. It’s a way of communicating without having a conversation. “When I talk to my spouse about my problem, I say, ‘I am ___,’ and they say ‘what I hear you say is ___.’ ” This exercise is not a conversation per se. “It’s an exchange of information designed to address little things when they’re little and keep them little,” says Munkholm. Do this and maybe you can say goodbye to the kind of assumptions that block communication. “In counselling one of the WEDDINGS WONDERFUL

biggest things I see is couples that have been together eight to ten years saying, ‘I shouldn’t have to tell you, you should know me by now’,” says Munkholm. “That’s never the case. Don’t assume that you know them, they can always surprise you.” When little things become bigger, it’s time to look underneath major fights. Most couples who attend marriage prep have already been living together for at least a year and a half, enough time to have a fight history. “We’re going back to needs psychology and are your needs being met and who’s responsible to meet them. We talk about how to set boundaries, to be firm and to be solid,” he says. Of course, it’s easy to misunderstand the concept of boundaries. “She might think, if I’m giving him boundaries, I’m giving him ultimatums,” says Munkholm. That’s not the case. Boundaries are about communicating the limits of what you consider acceptable behaviour, or simply communicating how you choose to live your life. A healthy couple can accept and appreciate their partner’s boundaries. Boundaries are helpful in many circumstances including in-law problems, something Munkholm says a lot of people are dealing with. “If it’s my family, it’s my responsibility to set the boundaries, not my partner’s,” he says. Where you came from is highly relevant to the person you are in a committed relationship and can dictate your behaviour unconsciously. Likely you’ll bump into your norms, and you can expect behaviours that are automatic to you to be challenged. “We talk about peoples’ expectations and the rules that we bring. That’s usually from our family of origin,” says Munkholm. “You don’t know these until you run right into them face first, and you catch yourself saying, well why did I do that? Why did you do that? Why would you even think that’s acceptable?” Bridge counselors help couples identify red flags in their relationship. “One of the obvious ones is finances. These days, many young people keep their finances separate. If they’re not willing to disclose their finances it could be a red flag,” says Munkholm. Another could be relationship history. The frequency of previous relationships, patterns of relating, reasons for break-ups, lying and cheating will have a bearing on future relationships. Munkholm says he never tells people not to get married unless there’s violence, but he does caution people that trust is crucial. If there are doubts of any kind, they should be settled before the couple goes ahead. Getting married isn’t all about the grownups. Twyla Baschuk, owner of Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo, is an expert in what kids are wearing to weddings. Prior to her purchase of the store on August 1, 2013, Baschuk noticed there was a gap in some of the fashion needs for children in the city – especially when it came to formalwear. Since purchasing Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo, Baschuk has worked to fill the gap with beautiful and stylish formal wear for girls and boys. “The new trends in apparel for flower girls this year is higher, knee-length hemlines,” explains Baschuk. “Lace overlay is also huge especially coming into spring.” As well, Baschuk says we’ll see a lot of pastel and bright colours. “And more of the off-white or soft ivory versus the white-white. More of the vintage look.” The dress styles this spring are lacy, with a vintage look with a pop of colour. Boys’ formal wear will include lots of linen this year. Suspenders, bow ties and fedora hats are all in style. “Boys’ suits are going to be more fitted, even preppy looking, to get a cleaner, formal look,” explains Baschuk. “Canvas driver hats and fedora hats are huge. We’ve got cases of them coming in this spring to keep up with the demand for the look.” Ring bearers are traditionally dressed to match the groom, including the same suit and colour as groom. “Lots of people want the linen look for the more casual fitted look,” says Baschuk. “We’ll have three different types of suits for the ring bearer for that particular look and for destination weddings.” She even stocks little black dress shoes to match the groom’s shoes. The look for junior bridesmaids is also leaning towards the vintage style. “A lot of times the brides want them to match the maid of honour or bridesmaids so we’re doing a lot of colour swatching to match the colour or style but in a more age-appropriate designer style,” says Baschuk. “It’s the bride’s preference.” Junior groomsmen often match the best man. “We have five-piece suits down to just a dress shirt and tie,” explains Baschuk. “They often match the tie or bow tie to the colour of the wedding. Gray was huge last year and I imagine it will carry on into the next year.” Ring bearers rarely carry the ring on a pillow anymore. This role is going more modern and when the bearer is bearing rings, he’s likely carrying a metal ring with the rings tied to it. “Ring bearers are more of an attendant now.” Baschuk’s vision and new plans for Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo include growth and a possible move in the spring to a larger location. She’s currently in the process of finalizing the plans. In the meantime, Baschuk says that they will expand their lines. “Our formal lines will continue to grow. It’s doubled since I took over. I hope to keep growing it to meet the needs of the city,” says Baschuk. She is also bringing in new baby lines and continues to support local moms by carrying locally made products such as sleeping sacks, hair accessories, and gym and dance leotards. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo has something special and unique for children, no matter what the occasion. Baschuk assures, “there’s something magical for all.” Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo is located at 705 Central Avenue, Saskatoon. Blakely is a Wakaw freelance writer.

BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG SP CREATIVE FEATURES EDITOR

Is there such a thing as Saskatchewan style? Fred Chlan, AIFD, founder of Flowers by Fred, thinks so. He sees Saskatchewan style being expressed by a new generation of brides and grooms who are no longer merely following trends - they’re setting them. “We, as a city and a province, have begun to arrive. We are creating and generating our own culture in Saskatchewan now,” says Chlan. “It’s an optimum time of creativity. There’s a lot of dimension here, along with a new sense of affluence and confidence.” A Saskatchewan wedding documented on social media can now be a source of inspiration for brides, wedding planners and floral designers across North America and around the world. “We always thought of ourselves as importing trend. That’s not true anymore,” says Chlan. “It’s just as likely that a florist in Hong Kong is recreating a Saskatchewan bouquet that’s on Pinterest.” Vintage nostalgia is an element of style trending at a growing number of Saskatoon weddings, says Chlan. “It’s about people respecting the generations that came before.” One Saskatoon bride, Megan Skaalid, honoured her grandmother’s memory by asking Flowers by Fred designer Leslie Ann Kupchanko to incorporate a special keepsake into her bouquet: 12 antique broaches. The vintage broaches were bequeathed to her by her grandmother. “We’ve had a number of brides bring in pieces of antique jewellery pieces they have collected. They look amazing, displayed in clusters of hydrangea, baby’s breath, freesia or big fluffy spider mums,” says Chlan. One of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, Saskatoon is now more culturally diverse than ever. Flowers by Fred has had the opportunity to create outstanding bouquets

BEAUTY AND GRACE Ida Liu fashioned a breathtakingly elegant bouquet of white hydrangeas, trimmed with bear grass and finished with white roses. White roses symbolize the bride’s pure heart.

and decorative centrepieces for many ethnic-themed wedding parties in Saskatoon, including Asian, Middle Eastern and East Indian celebrations. “Many of these celebrations extend over two or three days. In designing the flowers, it’s important to understand the couple’s vision and which traditions they will be incorporating,” says Chlan. National bridal magazines are currently fixated on clusters of obscure, exotic flowers. “That’s great, but a lot of these obscure flowers have an extremely limited season - some as short as two weeks. They may only be available in a certain geographical location and can be extremely costly. Are you willing to pay $13 to $18 a stem for a variety like a Chocolate Cosmos, knowing that you’ll require 50 to 100 of them for a bouquet? There are people out there who have the budget for that,” says Chlan. “But how relevant is that flower to you? What does it have to do with you, growing up in Saskatoon? Or coming to Saskatoon from another destination and establishing your career here?” says Chlan. The best wedding bouquets are ones that tell a story about the bride and groom, expressing their one-of-a-kind love story, says Chlan. At Flowers by Fred, personalized floral design begins with a comprehensive consultation. “It’s an opportunity for the couple to come in, tell us who they are, and what their vision is for their wedding,” says Chlan. “It starts with a dialogue and becomes a

creation. It’s all about the story.” Before entrusting your wedding flowers to anyone, Chlan recommends doing your homework. “There are very different degrees of professionalism out there,” he says. “It’s quite simple to throw a bunch of flowers together but to create a bouquet that expresses your personality and tells your individual story requires a high degree of professionalism.” The design team at Flowers by Fred is top notch, led by Ida Liu who purchased the business from Chlan 18 months ago. Liu brings an international perspective to the shop and a flair for Hong Kong design. With Liu managing the company’s business operations, Chlan is now free to devote even more time to the artistic side of floral design. The city’s expanding population means more weddings, with venues booking up more rapidly than ever. “We’re seeing weddings now taking place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as couples look for available venues. It’s important to book your floral consultation as early as possible and begin the discussion,” says Chlan. Contact Flowers by Fred at (306) 384-3003 or visit www. flowersbyfredsaskatoon.com.

Engagement Photos UNIQUE IDEAS FOR YOUR BY JENNIFER JACOBY-SMITH OF SP CREATIVE FEATURES

Engagement photos are becoming more and more popular. Some couples use them as save the date cards or as a wedding announcement in the newspaper. Whether they’re just informal photos for their personal albums or serve a special purpose, engagement photos can offer several benefits for couples, according to three local wedding photographers. “It’s an opportunity establish a rapport between the couple and the photographer,” says Natalie LusignanKlassen of Celestial Photography Studio. “To see what we can pull off in a very short amount of time.” That rapport will become very important on the wedding day when nerves are a little more frayed and the photo shoot may involve more people. The engagement shoot is also a chance for the photographer to gauge how the couple interacts with each other, according to Hemant Naidu of Naidu Photography. “Each couple is different. Some are super easy to work with and have no problem showing affection in front of the camera and some people – even though they love each other – have a difficult time doing that.” Trust between the couple and the photographer is such a key part of getting a good shot, so it’s a good idea to choose a photographer you connect with. This is especially important for engagement or wedding photos that are likely to be treasure for years to come. “Seventy-five per cent of what makes an image really unique and

personal is getting those genuine reactions from the subject, capturing their personality on film,” adds Lusignan-Klassen. All three photographers says it’s important to find ways to personalize the engagement photos. Lusignan-Klassen suggested bringing a personal item to the shoot. “We have a lot of Roughrider fans, so that’s very common to see couples bringing their jerseys,” she says. “Your favourite instrument,

YOUR WEDDING BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG SP CREATIVE FEATURES EDITOR

At Saskatoon’s new Holiday Inn, located on Pacific Avenue across from TCU Place, there’s no such thing as a “package wedding.” The hotel strives to offer a custom experience and fulfill the unique wishes of their wedding clients. The new downtown hotel opened on April 19, 2012. Brent Andrew, the hotel’s regional director of sales and marketing, says the property is a prototype for the Holiday Inn’s new HUB concept, featuring a contemporary-style open concept lobby, café, business centre and 24hour market. Other amenities include an inviting indoor pool and fitness centre. Guest rooms are equally attractive, with a modern, upscale feel. Particularly impressive are the three penthouse suites located on the top floor. Two of the penthouse suites feature baby grand pianos, while the third boasts a pool table. A board room for conferences or meetings is also located on the top floor. The Holiday Inn’s Cosmopolitan banquet room is ideal for smallerscale weddings or groups, with seating capacity for between 60 to 75 guests. “We have found our own little niche – for the smaller receptions, gift openings, breakfasts and lunches,” says Andrew. Wedding planning at the Holiday Inn begins with a friendly conversation with the Holiday Inn’s front line staff: Brent Andrew, food and beverage manager Adam Peterson and executive chef Tom Brownbridge. “We call it our ‘green couch’ conversation. We sit down with the bride and groom and ask them to visualize how they see their wedding day,” says Peterson. “We don’t offer package ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’. We want to develop something truly unique and special for you,” says Andrew. “It also allows our chef, Tom Brownbridge, to be really creative – whether he’s preparing a full sit-down banquet or a reception with hors d’ouevre stations. It’s all customized to what the individual bride and groom want for their special day, while staying within their budget.” “We’re also able to fulfill requests involving dietary restrictions, such as food allergies for example. You can’t accommodate those types of requests when you’re limited to choosing package A, B or C,” adds Peterson. “The sky’s the limit. We really have no limitations.” Brownbridge’s resume includes chef duties at both Boffin’s Club and Souleio Foods. “He’s an extremely animated chef who loves to develop individual menus. That’s really his forte,” says Peterson. For larger weddings and events, the hotel is pleased to partner with TCU Place, which is right across the street. “We’ll look after the guests and they (TCU) can take care of the larger functions in the conference space over there,” says Andrew. Shaily Mehrotra Sharma and her husband Nishant Sharma utilized the combined facilities of TCU Place and the Holiday Inn for their May 2013 wedding festivities, attended by 600 guests. “It was actually a week-long celebration from May 11 to 19,” says Shaily. “The week was comprised of religious ceremonies, dance parties, henna functions and welcome parties for the guests from out of town.” Planning for the elaborate celebrations began a year in advance, says Shaily.

The formal wedding reception and dance took place at TCU Place. Among the memorable moments was the groom’s ceremonial procession, which travelled from his hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn, to TCU Place. One block of 22nd Street was closed to traffic to allow the horse-drawn carriage to proceed to TCU Place. “Upon arrival, he was welcomed by the bride’s family,” says Shaily. “There were celebrations everywhere – we had functions at private houses, at the Holiday Inn, the Saskatoon Inn, the Willows, at TCU Place and in Calgary, which is where I’m from originally,” says Shaily. “Our guests from Calgary stayed at the Holiday inn. We hosted breakfasts at the Holiday Inn for them every morning. The function room became the area where our guests could gather and visit throughout the week.” Among the celebrations the couple hosted at the Holiday Inn was a welcoming reception for approximately 80 guests, featuring traditional East Indian cuisine. “It really put our executive chef Tom Brownbridge to the test, because he had to really learn about the culture and the food before creating their menu. He did trial runs in the kitchen, then invited Shaily’s family to sample the results. They were blown away! It ended up being a fantastic event!” says Peterson. Brownbridge says, “The family even provided us with authentic East Indian garb to wear for the reception. We had so much fun! We ended up feeling like we were part of the family.” The authentic fare totally impressed the family’s guests, who had travelled to Saskatoon from as far away as India, the U.K., and the United States, says Shaily. Nishant’s grandmothers, both in their 80s, also made the long journey from India to Saskatoon. “They were so thrilled they had been able to see the last of their grandchildren get married,” says Shaily. The Holiday Inn’s service was exceptional, comments Shaily. “They kind of became bride-side family throughout the wedding. They really went out of their way to accommodate our Indian traditions. They were very enthusiastic, and ready to try anything. They really made us feel at home.” Videographers captured the excitement of the Mehrotra-Sharma wedding; a short film has been posted for viewing on the Holiday Inn’s website. The couple have now made their home in Saskatoon. Shaily is a dentist, in practice at Lawson Dental. Nishant is a medical resident at the U of S College of Medicine. your pickup truck – even the funnies in the newspaper, I encourage them to include that with their session. I can stick a rose in your hand and you’ll look good, but it’s not going to tell a story.” Choosing a location special to you and your spouse-to-be is another way to make the photos unique. A favourite coffee shop, the drivein theatre, or a field of canola can give the photos an extra personal meaning. “One of the couples I did a few years ago had just bought an acreage. They were building their own house on it, building it by themselves,” Naidu recalls. “And they wanted to do some photos out there because this place meant so much for them. We went out there at sunset and got some really nice lighting.” While popular with many couples, Heather Fritz reserves iconic Saskatoon locations for those who no longer live in the city. “For people who live here and are still interacting with the same group of friends they grew up with. I want them to have different photos so that their photos don’t look like their best friend’s photos.” She adds, you should wear clothes you feel comfortable in without worrying about matching too closely. “And you should be the same level of dressiness as your partner.” If you can really want to punch up the personality in your photos try centering the shoot around an activity. It could be skating in the park or roasting marshmallows over a campfire. Choose an activity that typifies you as a couple. Lusignan-Klassen has even been paintballing for an engagement shoot. “I can put you in a nice pretty garden with a flower in your hand, but does that really depict who you are as a couple?” Not only do engagement photos serve a practical purpose as invitations or thank you cards, the shoot offers an opportunity to explore what your relationship means and what defines you as a couple. Further, it can be a chance to let down your hair, kick off your shoes and just have fun. Fritz adds not to overthink it. “It’s a nice time for the couple just to relax in the middle of the whole wedding process because weddings get crazy.”

Including special items – such as vehicles – with your photo shoot can create something unique and different for your session. Photo courtesy of Heather Fritz Photography

NEW WEDDING THEMES BY HILARY KLASSEN OF SP CREATIVE FEATURES

PHOTOS COURTESY OF RSVP WEDDINGS AND EVENT DESIGN

Casual or elegant, intimate or large, traditional or trendy, there’s no right way to do a wedding. In fact, today’s couples are becoming more creative when planning their special day, allowing their unique identity to shine through. The 2014 wedding season is on the horizon, and some new themes and trends are sure to capture our attention. “One of the big trends we’re seeing is couples who are really trying to personalize their wedding to make it be about each of them and them as a couple,” says Crystal Anderson MacLeod of RSVP Weddings and Event Design. “They’re working with what they know, what they enjoy and what they love, not just following the template of all the weddings they’ve been at before.” It’s a good trend, one that invites freedom, inspires creativity, and offers the ease of being yourself. As Director of Weddings, Anderson MacLeod has been turning dreams into reality at RSVP for about six years. She’s seen an increasing demand for wedding planners, partly due to the growth of the city, and partly because more people are working and simply don’t have the time, inclination or expertise to plan a wedding. “When we started out we were doing three weddings a year and now we’re doing 30 weddings a year,” she says. Anderson MacLeod loves her job and the different types of weddings she’s been fortunate to be a part of. “I enjoy all types of weddings. I love doing the small intimate wedding for 25 people in the back yard of the family home, but I also love doing the extravagant 600 person three day affair,” she says. In the past few years the vintage themed wedding has been a big

trend. But Anderson MacLeod sees a shift coming. “I think it’s going to continue to be a trend but I think there’s going to be a little bit of a shift to more glamour vintage, more ‘Great Gatsby,’ instead of mason jars and burlap runners. I think it will be classic vintage, a 1920’s inspired kind of thing, with more high glamour,” she says. The trend to personalized weddings is essentially a move away from trends, and touches many areas – food for example. Some people really enjoy the traditional “sit-down” dinner, but others are asking what they can do instead of having a two hour meal, then speeches, and a dance. “A lot of clients are opting to do more of a cocktail style reception. Guests are still having a substantial amount of food and feeling satisfied as they visit various food stations, and chef attended stations,” she says. “I’ve had clients do a Chinese station, or a gourmet mashed potato bar, or a gourmet poutine bar, something that would make guests say, ‘this is totally them, they love poutine, they love comfort food,’ that kind of thing.” Some couples choose to personalize their alcohol and come up with a signature cocktail, or have different kinds of beer. “It’s a good trend, I hope it’s here to stay,” says Anderson MacLead. The wedding cake is often either an over-thetop huge piece of artwork, or something small and understated that still allows the ceremonial cutting of the cake. If the cake is small there will be something else for dessert, like maybe donuts, pie, cupcakes, cake-pops and even puffed wheat cake, which was the favourite of one bride. Groom’s cakes are showing up more, too. Colour themes can become trends. “Blue seems to be popping up a lot this year, all shades of blue, and then gold is going to continue to be a big trend as a pop colour.” But Anderson MacLead has some cautions about colours. “One year deep purple or eggplant was THE colour, every wedding was eggplant or purple,” she says. “You may not want to be looking at your wedding photos and thinking, oh that was the pink and brown year, or that was the eggplant year.” She encourages her clients to go with what they love and what reflects their personal taste. “My clients seem to be almost trying to avoid the trends, which is kind of what I recommend to them,” she says. RSVP specializes in executing a stream-lined event from start to finish. They work with all kinds of budgets and Anderson MacLeod is pleased to guide people to decisions that will get them the greatest impact for their dollar. RSVP Weddings and Event Design has built a solid reputation over 11 years in business. “We’re the longest running event planning company in the city, I think maybe the province,” says Anderson MacLeod. Her partner, Kimberly Evans, does all the corporate events, like the mayor’s gala, for example. Permanent staff and some regular contract workers allow them to execute up to four weddings per weekend. For assistance to plan your wedding, visit rsvpeventdesign.ca or RSVP’s location at #229, 120 – 23 Street East or call 306.384.6044. WEDDINGS WONDERFUL

DESTINATIONS WEDDINGS

BY JENNIFER JACOBY-SMITH OF SP CREATIVE FEATURES

If your idea of a wedding involves sand and surf, you are not alone. Destination weddings continue to grow in popularity for Saskatoon couples. Jackie Stoesz of Uniglobe Carefree Travel says they’re continually booking destination weddings – sometimes multiple destination weddings in the same group of friends. She has some tips for making it as stress-free as possible. The most popular destination for weddings remains Mexico. The tropical country offers good deals and direct routes from Saskatoon. Puerto Vallarta offers consistently nice weather and good deals. The Cancun or Mayan Riviera area boasts white sand beaches and blue water. While it remains a hot spot for exchanging vows, Stoesz cautions there is a small detail of getting blood work done once you’ve arrived in the country. “Usually what they do is they send a doctor to your hotel once you’re there. It takes four business days after that to be approved if you can get legally married,” says Stoesz. There is a small chance Mexican officials could refuse the couple a marriage licence which could become a big headache when you’re supposed to be relaxing and celebrating. As a result Uniglobe recommends couples looking to get married in Mexico use a marriage commissioner here in Saskatchewan. You’ll be legally wed before you fly out to your beautiful location. Once there you can do a symbolic wedding. “It looks exactly the same,” explains Stoesz, “no one knows the

page 28

difference. And then you’re actually legally married in Canada.” Using a marriage commissioner also saves the couple expenses for having the marriage licence translated into English to be registered in Canada. “Especially, if people have been divorced, because then they have to send their original divorce papers and have them translated into Spanish. It’s a lot of work and very expensive,” Stoesz notes. Stoesz also suggests a symbolic wedding in the Dominican Republic. With only one or two ministers who can perform legal wedding ceremonies in the whole country it can make it difficult to book. For those that want to swap legal I-dos right on the beach, Stoesz suggests Jamaica. The island is easy to get to with a direct flight from Saskatoon. Plus there are no fees for translating documents because it’s an English-speaking island. Another tip from Stoesz is to weigh your budget carefully. While it may be a dream to have as many friends and family there as possible, creating a trip that is budget-friendly to everyone may limit the things you can do. For some couples it may be worth it to plan the luxurious experience they’ve dreamed of for a once in a lifetime event. Creating a wedding day you’ll treasure for a lifetime takes careful planning, so it’s important to speak to a travel agent. “It’s best to go through a travel agent because there’s so many things that can happen. Especially with a big group like that,” says Stoesz. As is the case with Uniglobe Carefree Travel, the travel agent may have personally met the resort’s wedding coordinator or have experience

COUTURE BY CANDACE M. FOX FOR SP CREATIVE FEATURES

Janelle Ford, owner of Unique Textiles Studio, offers endless fabric options for brides who are interested in one-of-a-kind designs for their special day. Photo: Jeff Lyons/StarPhoenix page 30

winter 2014 edition

Not just reserved for the rich and famous, couture bridal wear is becoming a mainstream option for all brides to be. Couture, meaning custom, allows a bride every dress detail indulgence; ensuring a true one a kind design for that special day. Lace, silk, chiffon, satin, organza, taffeta... the options are endless for brides considering the specifics before the sketches begin on their gown. It is the moment little girls dream about, and every woman cherishes: the first time the groom lays eyes on his bride as she walks down the aisle in her most perfect dress, looking the way she has always imagined. For Unique Textiles Studio Inc. owner Janell Ford in Saskatoon, this is an exciting time. “I love helping brides pick out fabric for their dresses, it’s a special moment that I’m really honoured to be a part of,” says Ford. The fabric choice is a very important step, and she recommends all brides do their research and homework before choosing a fabric for their gown. “It’s important for a bride to try on dresses in a store, having a picture in mind or in hand is great, but sometimes that style is not what they expect or does not suit their body shape,” explains Ford. With so many fabric options and styles to choose from, brides will certainly need time on their side, as the process from start to finish can be lengthy for some, but not necessarily for everyone. “Couture gowns are great for those who know exactly what they want and they just can’t seem to find it, or the bride that wants aspects of a few gowns combined into one with their own personal flare incorporated, of course,” explains Ford. Regardless of how intricate or classic the design is, brides can be rest assured, their wedding gown will truly be a one of a kind custom fit – specific and tailored to their body. The latest runway trends in wedding gowns for 2014 reveal a mix of fabric and colour. With lace making a demure return in various shades of white and off white, the pattern designs of lace and beaded colour lace can appeal to a variety of brides looking for that perfect combination of sophisticated romance. Designers are also getting creative by mixing various fabrics and colours to add dimension and interesting looks/shapes with eye catching details for brides looking to make a statement. Soft pastel fabric choices or coloured beading gives options to those brides looking to deviate from the usual all-white gown. For the beach brides walking down a sandy aisle overlooking the ocean, layered silk and chiffon gives an airy organic feel that captures the location and the mood. In support of the bride are always the much anticipated WEDDINGS WONDERFUL

bridesmaids and maid of honour. Never to outshine but rather complement, couture bridesmaid dresses are a perfect way to ensure a custom fit, as varying sizes and shapes will need to be considered when choosing that perfect dress. “A big trend right now is doing couture bridesmaid dresses in the same colour, but different styles to suit the various bridesmaids,” explains Ford. Having one dress that every bridesmaid agrees on and loves is a hard task - and often times not possible. Doing couture bridesmaid dresses allows for details in the bride’s gown to be transferred to the bridesmaid dresses; pulling the looks of the varying dresses together while still giving them that element of originality and uniqueness. Fabric choices for bridesmaid dresses can correspond to match perfect with the bride’s gown with colour variation or can be a slight contrast but should stay the same amongst the loyal ladies standing behind their beautiful bride, even when considering differing designs.

“It is hard to make one dress look amazing on different shapes and sizes. The bridesmaids that come into the store are always so happy to have something custom, a couture design is also that much more intimate and meaningful for the bride and those she has chosen to support her that day,” says Ford. With many brides, bridesmaids and mothers of the bride and or groom looking for assistance, Janelle has acquired quite the ‘Wall of Fame’. She is just happy to be a part of the momentous occasion for each family. “It really warms my heart. What I love most about my job, getting to be a part of their moment and having a hand in helping them with one of the most important days of their lives,” says Ford.
