Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One is a conceptualised album and takes a satirical look at the various facets of the music industry including song publishers, unions, the press, accountants, business managers, and the road. Musically, Lola Versus Powerman is varied, drawing on the genres of folk, hard rock, and traditional British music hall and Ray Davies’ acute observations have never been more razor sharp.

Young couple Mac (Seth Rogan) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) are settling down, with their new baby, into a life of quiet suburbia.

Thigs are going blissfully until a boisterous college fraternity sets sup house next door. Led by president Teddy (Zac Efron) and his offsider Pete (Dave Franco), this frat is all about partying and, after one call from Mac to the police about the noise, the frat sets its sights firmly on the thitrysomethings and the war quickly escalates.

There are some funny moments here, but a little too spaced out. Efron seems a tad out of place as the devil-may-care frat guy and while Rogan was pleasant enough, perhaps the affable stoner thing is wearing a bit thin.

After calling it quits last year, Newcastle pop-rockers The Havelocks (pictured) will make a welcome return to the Lass O’Gowrie this weekend.

With everyone and anyone who has ever been a member of the band getting on board, this double-set, one-night-only reunion show promises to be huge, especially when you consider that Newcastle’s premier party dudes The Main Guy and the Other Guys and rock and roll chanteuse Phoebe Daicos will be opening proceedings.

Aside from the reunion, frontman Lennie Tranter is also gearing up for his debut solo release in October so, watch this space.

Newcastle, prepare to be conned.

Wollongong Conservatorium’s all-ages community ensemble, The Con Artists, will be bringing their carnival of percussion, wind, brass, accordians and fiddles to Newcastle and the Hunter this weekend.

The frivolity will start on Saturday, September 6 with a 2pm street band performance in the Honeysuckle precinct, followed by a concert for the Newcastle and Hunter Valley Folk Club at The Wesley Fellowship Hall from 7.30pm ($15 adults, $12 concession, $10 folk club members). To cap off the visit, the troupe will be visiting Wyndham Estate (700 Dalwood Road, Dalwood) for a Father’s Day Global Grooves concert.

The Wyndham Estate Café will be open from 12pm - 3pm, with tastings in the Cellar Door from 9:30am - 4:30pm.

“I went to the studio and I didn’t play by any rules I just played and recorded the stuff how I wanted to and without any thoughts of record companies or commercial reasons and things like that,” Brand said.

“There was no one I had to please apart from myself in the studio. So at the end of the day if you feel really happy and comfortable with what you’ve got then it’s so much easier to go out and sing the songs and I think people can see that they’re getting something that’s true to yourself and not just recorded for ‘oh we need this type of song’ or ‘ we have to have this’.”

My Side of the Street - Brand’s tenth studio album - showcases his new found musical freedom and sees the singer once again collaborating with producer Craig Porteils.

The thirteen-track album features a guest appearance by Aussie country songstress

Jasmine Rae and a cover of Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs’ hit song Most People I Know Think That I’m Crazy. It’s an album that Brand admits has come about after years of gathering inspiration.

“When you release your first album it’s your very first so you’ve got all your life you’ve lived right up until that point and everything goes into that album,” Brand said.

“The next album you release you’ve got 18 months from the last one so you’ve kind of got to cram it almost. So, I guess with this album it feels like there’s a lot of songs on here that I really believe in strongly and I feel like I’ve sort of been picking up little pieces my whole life that have all sort of ended up at the end of this path and that have got into this album.

“Now, I’m not saying this is the end of my journey - I hope not anyway - but you know it kind of feels like it’s been a long time coming, a lot of bits and pieces have gone into this album.”

The album’s lead single What Your Love Looks Like is a country/rock ballad full of romantic imagery. The video for the track was filmed at some well known Sydney locations including the beautiful Curzon Hall in Marsfield.

“It certainly was one of the most involved videos I’ve done,” Brand said.

enjoys all aspects of being a musician, at the end of the day when it comes to a choice between writing and recording and heading out on the road - it’s the latter that wins out every time.

“For a performer, being on stage singing your songs is the ultimate. I’ve been off the road for the last seven months, I guess you could say, so you kind of get itchy feet, you’re ready to get back out there and play again.”

Local audiences will have the chance to experience Brand’s love of the stage - along with tracks from the new album when the My Side of The Street tour comes to Hexham Bowling Club later this month.

Looking back over a career that has spawned five gold, and three platinum albums, an ARIA Top 5 album, several ARIA nominations for Best Country Album, as well as 12 Golden Guitars, Brand still has a few projects that stand out in such a successful and long-lived career.

“I suppose one in particular would be The ANZAC, then there’s songs like Hell of a Ride, It’s Gonna Be Ok and Good Things in Life so there’s a few songs in there obviously that mark milestones, not only in my career but also in my life, so those songs - I’m not sure if being proud of them is the right word - but just being pivotal points in my life.”

While he is perhaps best known for his work in front of the camera, Aussie actor Joel Edgerton is fast gaining a reputation as being equally formidable off screen, penning the underrated 2008 thriller The Square, writing the story for the brilliant David Michod film The Rover and now this taught psychological police drama. The story starts in kinetic fashion amid a drug bust during which Detective Mal Toohey (Edgerton) cops a stray bullet in his protective vest. He survives and after celebrating the successful raid and downing one too many drinks, Toohey hits a nine-year-old on a bike - leaving him unconscious in the middle of the road. While he phones it in, he claims to have arrived on the scene after the accident happened. Veteran detective Carl Summer (Tom Wilkinson), living by a ‘protecting the brotherhood’ code helps Toohey conceal his crime while Summer’s protégée Jim Mellic (Jai Courtenay) suspects inconsistencies This thought-provoking thriller makes the most of its three stars who create a palpable tension on screen.

No one can channel the charm of old Hollywood quite like Woody Allen - no one!

The latest masterful example of this is Magic in the Moonlight, a light-hearted romantic comedy set in the South of France in the roaring ‘20s, written and directed by Allen.

British actor Colin Firth stars as Stanley, a famed magician tasked with debunking a sham spiritual medium named Sophie(Emma Stone), who is taking a rich American family for a ride with her “mental impressions” and séances.

But skeptical Stanley soon falls under Sophie’s spell and begins touting her praises to the international press.

This film is best described as charming. The story is simply delightful - the kind of good, clean, fun you rarely find in cinemas these days. As a bonus, Aussie actress, Jacki Weaver is hilarious as the gullible family matriarch, Grace.

Your grandma is bound to love this one but you may well too.

The kids are alright said Goodrem’s mentorship had been invaluable. “I learnt so much from Delta,” Curtis said. “She really taught me to connect with the audience - before The Voice, I never smiled when I sang because I was so focused on the performance but Delta showed me, while it’s important to be focused, it’s also very important to connect with the audience and show that you’re having fun.”

Curtis, who was the youngest contestant in the top six, said that she wasn’t intimidated by competing against older kids.

“I think that an age is just a number,” she said.

“The competition was hard, but I don’t think going up against older kids made it harder, because it’s all about the performance so I just went out there thinking ‘this is my time to shine’.

With the win setting Curtis up with quite a promising future in the music industry, she said she didn’t want to rush into anything.

“After the tour finished, I’ll probably have a rest for a couple of weeks, but after that I want to do some vocal coaching because I’ve never done that before and I really want to see what my voice can do,” she said. “I’m also really interested in learning the piano and basically building it all bit by bit.”

“It’s going to be so much fun - I just can’t wait,” a bubbly Curtis told TE. “Audiences can expect lots of enthusiasm, some really amazing songs and, most of all, there’s going to be lots and lots of fun and lots of connection with the audience. We’re going out there to give it our all.”

Curtis first burst into the nation’s consciousness during her blind audition on The Voice Kids with a blistering rendition of the Alicia Keys hit Girl on Fire. James will be bringing the EP to Newcastle this month as part of his biggest headlining tour to date and, after some rigorous lyricism and subtle and unpretentious production, then his latest offering Broken Lines should have touring over the last 12 months with the likes of Boy and Bear, Pete Murray, Josh Pyke and Emma Louise, it should be a pretty well-oiled affair.

“It has been a pretty mental 12 months though, I’ve been lucky enough to have snagged some great supports and play shows which really help you raise the bar,” James told TE. Since the debut, James has fleshed out his sound from subtle stripped back acoustic to fully fledged band mode and when he decided to head into the studio, he wanted the new EP to reflect this depth of sound. While the first EP was a home-studio affair, for Broken Lines James headed into the legendary

“We can’t wait to kick off this Aussie tour,” frontman Andrew Wilson told TE. “Australia has always been really good to us - the crowds have always been great.

People seem into the new album, too so we can’t wait to get over there and play it live.

The band ran into some rocky ground leading up to and after the release of their last album, the Taite Music Prizeshortlisted Harmony thanks largely to a gruelling touring schedule but now, with a new outlook and new bass player in Michael Logie (The Mint Chicks), things couldn’t be better. “Harmony was quite a difficult album to make - but this one, in comparison was really quite easy,” Wilson said. “We recorded it over three days at a studio in Auckland and then I went

“We had a really good working relationship with Chris,” he said. “The great thing

about him is that he doesn’t pander to what might be the most easily digestible sounds - he comes from a more artistic viewpoint over a commercial one and he really helped bring the more ‘interesting’ elements in our music to the fore.”

Wilson said there was a sense of a re-invigorated Die! Die! Die! with this album - reflected somewhat in its title which is an acronym for Someone Who Isn’t Me - a sentiment Wilson said was reflective of his maturation as a songwriter. “Yeah, I guess

“I never want to stop and, fingers crossed, I will never have to stop,” he said.

“The tour is going to be going off with a bang - although there is lot’s to organise and lots of running around, I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

The son of ministers who travelled around Australia building churches from scratch, Smyth had the wanderlust instilled in him from an early age and he said he couldn’t imagine a life without touring.

“It’s like the old saying ‘idle hands are the devil’s plaything’ - I find that if I’m in one place for too long, I tend to get itchy feet.

With a 12 show Spanish tour, culminating in a show at the Low Festival in Benidorm alongside Massive Attack, Kaiser Chiefs and The Hives, Smyth will be hitting Australian roads to promote his latest long player Exits.

Dropping this week, Exits builds on the free-spirited feel of his debut record Release with Smyth’s raw, Tom Waitsesque vocals once again coming to the fore. ot on the heels from the success of his debut single Given The Chance, The Kite String Tangle (otherwise known as Brisbane-based producer Danny Harley) is striking while the iron is hot with the debut EP Vessel.

For Harley, the past 12 months has been quite an untangled string of highs. Given the Chance racked up well over 1 million plays on SoundCloud before taking out the nineteenth spot in the 2013 triple j Hottest 100. The Kite String Tangle successfully sold out two extensive national tours before heading to the US for performances at the highly regarded South-By-South-West Music Festival.

He even managed a guest appearance at the star-studded Coachella Festival and performed a dream set at this year’s Splendour In The Grass festival.

July also saw The Kite String Tangle release the second single from the Vessel EP, Arcadia, which Acid Stag called a “soft, subtle, sonic caress.”

To support the release of his EP, The Kite String Tangle will soon commence a month-long series of shows around the country and given that shows have already sold out in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Towoomba, Newcastle punters should get in quick for this one.
