hornton-based disaster relief service, Aussie Care sent a truck full of food to drought-stricken communities last week, but it wasn’t without a tinge of sadness. The $50,000 worth of groceries, toiletries and linen was farewelled in Aussie Care’s latest acquisition, a new truck, but it came at the expense of another local business. “We’ve just bought this new truck, it’s one of JW Express’, and that was second-generation business, Aussie Care’s national coordinator, Peter West said. “We’d dream of buying a truck like this, but you’re talking about a 50-year business gone broke, shut the doors, and that’s just up the road from here. “This is the economy, but out there [the state’s north-west] you’ve got the economy and the drought, so it’s a double-whammy. Escorted out of town by Maitland police last Tuesday, the truck delivered items such as Panadol, dog food and rice to Cumborah, a 500-person town approximately eight hours north-west of Maitland, between Walgett and Lightning Ridge. Mr West said that on previous trips west he spoke to farmers about their needs, while hearing stories about cotton farms in Bourke close to being taken by the bank. He said that another had gone from 100 employees to two within 18 months.

Aussie Care’s national coordinator, Peter West, Maitland MP, Robyn Parker and Inspector Brian Tracey from Maitland Police “So you’re affecting everybody from your fuel to your tyres to the lady working in your local canteen, he said. “Once it’s out there it’s not my food, I’m only the delivery boy. “You’ve got to listen to what the need it, and dog food and Panadol are two of the things. Mr West said that donations and fundraising by

Maitland Police allowed them to fill the truck. Also farewelling the truck was Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker, who announced that Aussie Care would be receiving $6120 for a computer upgrade. Ms Parker said that NSW Premier, Mike Baird had put the money aside as he was so impressed with the facility when he visited in July.
