SW Labor has promised to fix the longstanding problem of traffic congestion at the Adamstown railway crossing if it wins government in March.

Visiting Newcastle on Monday, Opposition Leader, John Robertson said a Labor Government would commit to funding a feasibility study to determine whether an overpass or underpass should be built on the site, and begin constructing the chosen solution within its first term of government. “The Adamstown gates being removed will make it easier for motorists to move in and out of the city and around this city,� he said. “It is important that we rejuvenate Newcastle and the CBD, but it’s also important that the suburbs aren’t forgotten - this plan addresses both.�

170 trains a day currently pass through Adamstown Station, including 80 freight trains, causing lengthy delays for the 1,000 motorists an hour who drive across the heavy rail line.

The announcement formed part of Labor’s city-wide revitalisation strategy, which includes the construction of six additional crossing points across the heavy rail line between Wickham and Newcastle Station, 24-hour fare free buses in the CBD, improved accessibility at train stations, and re-signaling the rail line to reduce wait times at new and existing level crossings.

There’s an interesting debate going on within the federal Liberal Party at the moment over whether money due to be spent on Tony Abbott’s paid parental scheme should be instead be used to help fund military action in Iraq.

Several Government MPs have gone public with their opposition to the scheme with Mr Abbott saying that while his colleagues were not obliged to agree with every decision he or the party made, they were expected to abide by those decisions once they were finalised by the Party.

As he points out, the Party has gone to two elections with the scheme a key part of their campaigns.

It’s very unlikely they are going to dump it now and give Labor a free kick to criticise them for a broken election promise.

The Prime Minister is adamant the scheme will commence in July next year.

Labor has already started to point out that Mr Abbott has dissention in his ranks.

It sounds like they are right.

I’m sure the Prime Minister is furious with those on his own side disagreeing with one of the most expensive items in the budget.

Of course, we don’t want a team of sheep walking around saying exactly the same things right across the country, but is does nothing to generate confidence in the Government when they can’t agree amongst themselves.

I also don’t think that the general public would accept money being taken away from parents and spent on war.

While I think it is important that we are part of the united front fighting terrorists organisations, the $5.5 billion is going to do a whole lot of good right here in Australia.

Taking time off work to look after children is a massive financial issue for parents.

Helping ease the money pressure at a time when attention needs to be focused on the child is vital.

Money shouldn’t have to come into it when deciding to have a baby.

It’s unlikely they are going to dump the scheme

Congratulations to local league legends Tony Butterfield, Mark Sargent and Danny Buderus who were inducted into the Newcastle Knights Hall of Fame at the club’s presentation night last week.

Second-rower Beau Scott, who also played a big part in the successful NSW State of Origin team, deservedly took out the Player of the Year award with Kurt Gidley named Players’ Player.

It was great that Alex McKinnon was able to join his teammates for the festivities as he continues his long recovery from injury.

Scott and McKinnon shared Wayne Bennett’s coaches award with Scott also claiming the Gladiator of the Year award from the Once a Knight Old Boys group.

Sione Mata’utia was named NYC Player of the Year and also the club’s Rookie of the Year after scoring seven tries in seven first grade games.

Off-season injury news from the Knights is that James McManus has had foot surgery after he missed a number of matches in the second half of the season.

The club says he is should be in full training in December.

Fellow winger Akuila Uate has also gone under the knife to have a knee injury repaired.

He will start training after Christmas and should be back to full capacity in February.

Newcastle couple has had their nuptials go viral online, after parkour professionals dropped in on their destination wedding on the Greek island of Santorini.

Matthew and Kerry-Anne Glen tied the knot in the island paradise earlier this month at a small ceremony attended by 20 of the couple’s nearest and dearest.

“We chose to get married in Greece because we just wanted a quiet wedding,” Mr Glen told the Post.

“We didn’t want to deal with the fuss of a huge wedding and all the attention and [we] got the opposite.”

Little did the couple know when booking their destination wedding that they would be sharing the island with 18 competitors in Red Bull’s 2014 Art of Motion international parkour event.

Also known as freerunning, parkour practitioners navigate their urban surrounds on foot, often climbing, jumping or swinging between obstacles, like rooftops and fences.

“When I rocked up on the day, before Kerry, we had to walk through the comp down a huge set of stairs to get to the wedding terrace - we had no idea it was on,” Mr Glen said. “Kerry got photo with my dad on the way to the altar, and a guy jumped over. “[Our] photographer asked him to do it again and the rest is history.”

Mr Glen posted the resulting photograph on the popular user-generated news website, Reddit, and the couple’s story was picked up by media outlets across the globe, from ABC’s Good Morning America in the US, to Sunrise on Channel 7.

“The whole thing is surreal,” Mr Glen said.

“Neither of us wanted to be the centre of attention for hundreds of people so it’s ironic that the wedding has got so much attention now.”

Mr Glen said he and his wife were enjoying wedded life and planned to honeymoon in Europe and America before returning home to Newcastle.

Celebrating a second chance Maitland’s multi-talented Campbells take 2014 Transplant Games by storm

A

ll Maitland’s newest athletic superstar wanted was a bronze medal to complete his collection.

Jack Campbell went a little better though, walking away from the 2014 Transplant Games with two bronzes and silver, after competing in a range of events including athletics, tenpin bowling, ball throw and a three-kilometre fun run.

It was in the fun run he picked up the silver. “Last time [the 2012 games] I was walking, but I got bored so I started to run,” Jack said.

“And I wanted to beat my time this year.”

The games, held in Melbourne during the school holidays, saw transplant recipients, donors and supporters compete in a friendly atmosphere to celebrate a second chance at life.

“We’ve made a commitment to get there every time they’re held to show gratitude for the donation of the heart valves for Jack,” his mum, Melissa, said. “It’s a way to say thank you for the gift of life.”

In his short life, Jack has received two transplants of heart valves, after being diagnosed with critical aortic stenosis at birth. He received one valve a few weeks after birth in 2005, then another in 2012

Campbell said. The games also encouraged family members to get involved, with Jack’s sister, 12-year-old Morgan, picking up her own swag of medals.

She won three gold, one silver and one bronze, saying the athletics was her favourite. Morgan also said she loved participating in a basketball clinic.

The plan has been criticised in some quarters for its similarity to a convention centre proposal put forward by the then Labor Member for Newcastle, Jodi McKay in the lead-up to her failed 2011 election bid.

Greens candidate for Newcastle, Michael Osborne branded the “rehashed” plan a “developer-driven party centre”.

Newcastle councillor and Labor candidate for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp said Labor’s plan complemented Newcastle City Council’s own transport plans moving forward.

“Council has a public transport plan that they’ve just released where they want to increase public transport by some 400 per cent,” he said.

“Council wants to increase public transport use not decrease it.

“We want more cycleways and we want more pedestrian usage and that’s what this plan will offer.”

The revitalisation plan capped of a week of major announcements from the Labor Party, including a $14 million commitment to the redevelopment of Newcastle Art Gallery and plans for a convention centre and accompanying skybridge in Honeysuckle.

The 4,500 square metre convention and exhibition centre would be built by private developers on State-owned land on the corner of Honeysuckle Drive and the former Lee Wharf Road, and be complemented by an “iconic” skybridge, that would stretch across the rail line, connecting to the CBD. Mr Robertson said the project would create jobs and allow Newcastle to secure a slice of the state’s $7 billion-a-year convention industry.

“The convention centre will provide a once in a generation opportunity to

ewcastle’s small bar owners are calling for a separate liquor accord to be established, in order to put an end to “inequitable” licence conditions that are stifling the city’s nighttime economy.

The move comes after Hunter Street night-spot, the Terrace Bar, closed its doors, in protest of a string of new licence conditions being imposed upon it by the NSW Licensing Police, including a ban on the sale of cocktails and unmixed drinks after 10pm. Terrace Bar licensee, Chris Hearn said the new conditions would have a catastrophic impact on his business.

“The prohibition of the service of one on our primary products, cocktails, from 10pm, would effectively crush my business,” he said.

Mr Hearn said since opening the Terrace Bar in June, 2012, he had not had a single violent incident at the venue but was still required to employ a security guard on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights in order to trade. The Terrace Bar’s licence also requires Mr Hearn to close the venue’s popular rooftop area at 10pm, in order to safeguard against noise complaints and close the bar entirely at midnight. “These

Melbourne myself sounds more and more like an option these days.”

Visiting Newcastle last week from his electorate of Melbourne, a city renowned for its small bars, Greens MP, Adam Bandt said the NSW Government and the City of Newcastle should be advocating for more diverse nightlife in the CBD. “Small bars have put Melbourne on the map and I

think they can do the same for Newcastle,” he said. “People want to have alternatives to the bigger places to go out and people power will ultimately win out.

“The question is whether or not state governments are going to help deliver what people want.”

Greens candidate for Newcastle, Michael Osborne said there needed to be a separate accord for smaller venues.

“The current liquor accord in Newcastle is dominated by the big players and they have their own issues that need to be addressed in that way, but small bars and small venues have different issues and they need to be addressed in a separate liquor accord,” he said.

“I’m also calling on the State Government to devolve the system of liquor licensing in this state, so that local councils can have the power to apply and provide liquor licences across the board and in that way we can coordinate the planning and development decisions of the city, the revitalisation of the city, the public domain works that are needed in this city, as well as the liquor licensing.”

Mr Hearn said he had no plans to reopen the Terrace Bar until the State Government and Licensing Police made conditions fairer for small bars, clubs and restaurants in Newcastle that were free from violence.

ork on the long-awaited final stage of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass took a step forward last week, with Minister for Roads and Freight, Duncan Gay announcing tenders had been called for the concept design and environmental impact assessment for the Rankin Park to Jesmond link.

“We are calling for expressions of interest in the planning… on this important missing link, something Newcastle has been waiting for decade for. After the EIS [environmental impact statement] is displayed and community feedback is sought we could see planning approval

as early as next year.” Visiting Newcastle last year, NSW Premier, Mike Baird said while construction was slated to begin in 2017, the Government would work to bring the start date forward. Mr Gay said an earlier start was still on the cards.

“At this stage we’re indicating 2017 but working like steam to try and get in 2016.”

The $280m link will connect Newcastle Road at Jesmond to Lookout Road and McCaffrey Drive at Rankin Park and includes the possibility of a connection to the rear of John Hunter Hospital.

Meanwhile, the duplication of the Tourle Street Bridge remains on track, with GHD winning the tender to prepare the planning documentation and detailed designs. The design is expected to be compete by mid next year.

almer United Party Senator Jacqui Lambie believes “straight talking” and “honesty” will be the key factors for voters of Charlestown in the October 25 by-election.

Ms Lambie visited Newcastle last week to support the campaigns Palmer United Party-supported independents, Suellen Wrightson (Charlestown) and Jennifer Stefanac.

“I’m very happy to be here to support both Suellen and Jennifer. There’s a nice bit of woman power going on,” Ms Lambie said. “It’s nice to see the average Australian wanting to have a swing at going into politics. They’re going to stand their ground and that’s what we need.”

Ms Lambie said the major political parties needed to be held to account.

“I’m very aware of what is going on with ICAC and I believe there should be a federal ICAC,” she said. “There’s a lot more filth going on out there that needs to be uncovered and it needs to be done today.

Ms Wrightson, currently a councillor on Cessnock City Council, said she had a real affinity with the Charlestown electorate having grown up at Swansea.

“I grew up on the lake at Swansea and I went to Swansea High School. I’ve lived at Caves Beach and I’ve worked in a business within Charlestown Square,” she said.

“I’ve watched this area grow and there’s now doubt that I feel connected to the

Following that report, we completed a detailed analysis of the city’s finances. We looked at what we needed to spend on maintaining and renewing our assets; how much we spend providing services; income from rates, fees and charges; and the impact of depreciation and cost shifting.

Our 2013-2017 Delivery Program outlined a plan to move us towards sustainability and we have made significant progress, reducing our overall expenditure by 10% or $12million per annum.

Initiatives undertaken included: • reducing staff numbers by 90 full time positions • restructuring to reduce management positions • reducing ongoing operational expenses • prioritising capital works to make sure all projects are fully funded before work starts • focusing on the top four priority projects and • identifying surplus assets for disposal.

These efforts made a difference but internal savings, outsourcing services and productivity improvements alone are not enough. We are now talking to the community about a special rate variation to secure our financial future in the long term and deliver our shared community vision for Newcastle 2030.

With more people across Lake Macquarie and Australia taking advantage of video and online communications using the internet, ensuring there is good connectivity in our local area is a high priority.

The National Broadband Network rollout is planned to provide efficient and reliable communications services for our residents.

Lake Macquarie City has been identified as a pilot construction area to test this new “fibre-to-the-node” technology, which will see areas currently serviced by the Belmont, Boolaroo and Morisset telephone exchanges connected to this important infrastructure.

Over the coming months, you might notice the installation of new telephone exchange boxes on your street, which will be used to allow households to connect to the National Broadband Network. It is expected that from June 2015 at least 50,000 households across Lake Macquarie City will have the option to connect to the National Broadband Network.

This network is a vital piece of infrastructure for our City, providing many enhancements in the online realm and increasing the potential of the City as place to live and work.

We welcome the opportunities it will bring for families and many businesses in our local area. I hope people will take advantage of the services and high speeds over the NBN when they become available.

On another note, this Sunday will see running enthusiasts take part in the Fernleigh15 where they will run the 15km track from Adamstown to Belmont. This year, Lake Macquarie City Council entered into a three-year naming rights partnership with Athletics NSW to support the delivery of this popular event. eatlemania took Australia by storm, Homicide hit our black and white TV screens, and Robert Menzies was Prime Minister.

The year was 1964 and here in Newcastle, shoppers experienced a revolution in retail with the opening of the city’s first suburban shopping centre, what is now, Stockland Jesmond.

Billed as a “100 million pound, Americanstyle drive-in shopping centre”, the new centre had enough space for 5,000 cars a day, and for the first time outside of a capital city, brought together more than two dozen retailers, including Elliot’s Menswear, Chic Lingerie, and the Oak Milk Bar. Lorraine Rowe, from Caves Beach, and Gloria Roberts, from Warners Bay, were both in their 20s and working at Big W when the centre’s doors opened for the first time on October 7, 1964 and returned to the centre last week to celebrate 50 years since its opening.

“There were so many people waiting outside on the day of the opening,” Mrs Roberts, who worked in the menswear department, told the Post.

“They were like wild animals coming into the store.”

Stockland Jesmond centre manager Michelle Thomas and inaugural Big W employees Lorraine Rowe and Gloria Roberts Mrs Rowe, who sold hosiery at the department store, said shopping was very different back then.

Man injured in Bar Beach licensed club

Girl, 16, dies after being struck by car

A man has been seriously injured in an explosion at a licensed club near Newcastle.

About 8.15pm on Friday, emergency services were called to a bowling club on Memorial Drive, Bar Beach.

Police have been told an employee was attempting to change an apparatus on a keg in a cool room when the explosion occurred.

The 23-year-old local suffered serious injuries to his arm and chest and was taken to John Hunter Hospital by ambulance.

The club has been closed for the evening and a crime scene established.

WorkCover commenced an investigation.

Police are conducting investigations into a fatal pedestrian collision at Edgeworth near Lake Macquarie last week.

About 8.20am on Wednesday, police were called to the intersection of Main Road and Neilson Street following reports a girl had been hit by a 4WD. It is believed the 16-year-old girl was crossing the road when she was hit by a white Toyota Prado. She was treated by paramedics and taken to the John Hunter Hospital where she died. A woman, who was driving the 4WD, was not injured in the collision but taken to Belmont Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

ewcastle ratepayers could be slogged with a $100 increase on their residential rates bill, as part of proposed measures aimed at improving the long-term financial sustainability of Newcastle City Council.

While an overhaul of Council’s organisation structure had resulted in $12 million of ongoing savings over the past 12 months, Council’s general manager, Ken Gouldthorp said steps needed to be taken to increase revenue. “We are proposing to apply to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) for a multiyear, special rate variation to increase our rates income above the IPART benchmark rate peg,” he said.

“The application is for a five-year period starting in 2015/16. There are three different options being considered.”

Option one is to increase rates based on the peg rate, an option Mr Gouldthorp said would result in further erosion of the city’s limited cash reserves, and see the average resident paying just $34 more on rates in five years than what they do today.

Option two is to apply for an increase of between 6.5 and 6.8 per cent over five years, an option Council had foreshadowed following community engagement sessions undertaken earlier this year as part of the budget process.

This would result in ratepayers forking out an additional $81 on rates in five years time. “This option allows the Council to secure its financial future whilst also maintaining existing levels of service,” Mr Gouldthorp said.

Option three would see the average residential rates bill increase by $101 by 2020.

Council will community input on the options throughout October. A number of community drop-in sessions will be held around the city where ratepayers can have their say on the proposed changes.

ovocastrians are being asked to help support the work of Youth with a Mission’s (YWAM) medical ship as it prepares to travel to Papua New Guinea to deliver much-needed treatment in remote areas.

Youth With a Mission is a worldwide movement operating in more than 1,000 locations in 180 countries with medical professionals volunteering their time to provide care in areas such as childbirth, immunisation, optometry and denistry.

YWAM’s vessel, the MV Ammari, will be docked in Newcastle until this Friday and will then head to Sydney for six weeks.

YWAM is seeking to raise $5 million prior to December 4 to assist with completing the fitout of the ship.

Helen Humphries, owner of The Deck Homewares and Fashions, was inspired to help raise awareness of YWAM’s work after two volunteers from the ship visited her Hunter Street store.

Coinciding with World Mental Health Day and the first anniversary of the opening of the Woodlands mental health unit at Toronto Private Hospital, Lynette Bridges was named the overall winner of the competition, which encourages people suffering mental illness to express themselves through art.

Ms Bridges’ digital work entitled ReAwakening was created by photographing an ink drawing of a skull.

A life-long sufferer of mental illness herself, Ms Bridges said the out-of-focus human skull represented peeling back the layers she sometimes created to deal with her mental state.

“The way I present myself in public is very much multi-layered but when I go home, it’s just me and perhaps, subconsciously this is what I was trying to represent,” she said.

Monday, October 20 is World Osteoporosis Day, part of a year-long campaign aims to raise global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.

This year, the focus is on osteoporosis in men Research from the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) shows one in five men aged over 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis.

Men are also twice as likely to die following a hip fracture than women and are more likely to suffer an osteoporotic fracture than to develop prostate cancer. One-third of the world’s hip fractures occur in men.

The IOF advises all people aged over 70 should visit their doctor to be tested for osteoporosis with those 50-69 years of age should be tested if risk factors, such as use of certain medications, are present.

Shortland MP, Jill Hall, who last month awarded the society a $6,400 grant to publish the book, encouraged locals to contribute to the historical document.

“The new ANZAC history book will be a great record of our local area,” she said.

Many ageing parent carers, aged over 60 years caring for a son or daughter with a disability, are looking after their loved one without a transition plan and with little support, according to a new study released by Anglicare.

The study surveyed 159 carers and found the importance of a transition plan arrangement was mentioned by four out

of five carers. Yet only 10 per cent had received assistance with planning. “Most ageing parent carers are female and about a fifth are in their 80s or 90s. They have been providing care for 30 years or longer and one of their key concerns is for their child to be cared for after they are no longer able to do so,” Sue King, Director of Advocacy and Partnerships said.

If you don’t have a card, maybe now is the time to see if you are eligible

Seniors Health Care Card changes Like most Centrelink benefits of late, the Government has changed the eligibility rules for the Seniors Health Care Card.

For those of you who don’t know what this is, it is like any other health care card provided by the government however it is only available to those over age pension age that are not eligible for the age pension.

Currently as it stands to be eligible for a card your annual taxable income must be below $51,500 for singles and $82,400 for couples.

This means that for self-funded retirees who derive the majority of their income from their superannuation pensions tax free would be eligible, however, this is all about to change.

From 1 January 2015, anyone who does not already have a pension account and a Seniors Health Care Card you will have to meet the new rules to be eligible.

As per before your income will have to remain under the above limits, however they will be assessing your income differently.

You will be assessed based on deemed income from your pension accounts regardless of what income you take and whether it is taxable or not.

Current deeming rates sit at 2% on the first $48,000 for singles and $79,600 for couple and then 3.5% thereafter.

For example a single person with $1,000,000 in their pension account will now have an assessable income of $34,280 from deemed income.

If this person then has income of $20,000 from outside super they would not be eligible for the card.

Firstly, if you don’t have a card, maybe now is the time to see if you are eligible.

Secondly, if you do have a card, be very careful after 1 January 2015 not to do anything that may risk you losing your card as it may be very hard to get back.

Tips to prevent gastroenteritis

It is well-known that the massive consumption of sugary drinks in Australia is contributing to the current obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemics.

From October 2011 to October 2012 Australians consumed a whopping 1.28 billion litres of sugary drinks.

These types of drinks include soft drinks, energy drinks, vitamin waters, sports drinks, sweetened iced teas, flavoured milks and some fruit juice drinks. There are many ways we can quench our thirst and avoid over consumption of sugary drinks. Water is always the best option, however if you need more flavour a good option is to add a little fresh lemon juice, lime juice or mint to chilled water. If you drink a lot of sugary drinks it can be easier to cut down the amount you drink slowly.

Swap every second or third drink through the day for water and after a short time you will get used to it.

Some states in Australia such as Queensland placed a total ban on the sale of soft drinks from school vending machines 10 years ago, and recently the Australian Capital Territory followed suit in their schools.

The Hunter and New England region of NSW introduced The Fresh Taste @ School Healthy Canteen Strategy which placed a total ban on sugary drinks in 2005 from all canteen sales.

You might think that these bans seem quite drastic, but when we look at the big picture of diabetes worldwide some frightening changes are occurring. For instance in the year 1980, 153 million people worldwide had diabetes, then 28 years later in 2008, 347 million people had diabetes. Where will we be in another 28 years? In 2004, 3.4 million people died from diabetes complications and this number is projected to double by 2030. Type 2 diabetes makes up 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide. Type 2 diabetes is a disease that can be prevented and controlled by regular exercise and healthy eating habits.

This is one reason behind the measures that have been taken to reduce sugary drink consumption. Limiting the amount of sugary drinks you consume is a small step that can certainly make a big difference in your life.

This week we have seen a spike in patients presenting with gastroenteritis.

Gastroenteritis is an infection and inflammation of the digestive tract, typically presenting with nausea followed by vomiting lasting for around 12 hours.

Once the nausea and vomiting subside you may continue to experience abdominal cramping, bloating, diarrhoea, fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell.

In serious cases pus and/or blood may be present in bowel motions. You may not feel like eating or drinking.

This can result in dehydration, one of the most serious side effects of gastroenteritis. The most common cause of gastroenteritis is from eating or drinking something that is contaminated with a virus, bacteria or parasite. This may result from eating food that is undercooked, through poor hygiene (such as, not washing your hands before cooking or after handling raw meat), or drinking from an untreated water supply.

Perhaps the spike we have seen in the last week may not be a surprise given that many people travelled overseas or went on camping trips during the school holidays. While most episodes of gastroenteritis heal themselves after a few days, it may be worthwhile seeing your family doctor. If your symptoms are severe or persist for more than a few days you may need some blood or stool testing to identify the cause of your infection.

Regardless of the cause, it is very important with any gastroenteritis infection to ensure that you keep your fluids up.

If dehydration becomes severe you may need to be admitted to hospital to be put on a drip. Medication, such as antibiotics, may be needed to help kill the bacteria or parasite causing the infection. To prevent gastroenteritis, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after changing nappies, going the toilet, touching animals, and before and after food preparation. Be sure to thoroughly cook your foods and store foods at the correct temperature. If you are travelling overseas to areas where water may be untreated it is wise to drink bottled water only, avoid ice, peeled fruits and vegetables, and undercooked meats.

Violence in schools has been in the news again, with new statistics showing an increase in reports of violence and threats in Hunter schools.

Violence has always existed in society and schools are not immune from that, however the level of violence within schools is concerning.

We expect a lot from our schools. Teachers are no longer expected to just know how to teach their relevant subject, they are also expected be social workers, councillors and security guards.

The availability of school councillors and other support workers vary from school to school, but the universal response from schools is that more support is needed.

Whatever the response from government, one thing is clear: this issue can’t just be dealt within schools themselves. A community wide response is needed to address violence in all its forms. If students are not given positive and responsible messages at home then teachers must spend valuable time teaching basic respect rather than subject content.

Any new intervention must be targeted earlier. We cannot wait until problems get out of hand at high school before the resources are available to intervene. Targeted intervention must start with Early Childhood Education and Care. The last government introduced a program allowing all four-year-olds to receive at least 15 hours of before school education, where many formative social skills are taught. This is an amazing start but more is needed throughout the school life of an at risk student to ensure they don’t fall through the gaps.

The most important rule to remember is… be prepared!

Begin with some questions; why are you presenting?

What are your outcomes? Who is your audience? Keeping these answers in mind will help you plan and prepare your presentation. A presentation is generally made of three parts, a beginning, a middle and an end.

Begin with outlining the main body of your presentation and list the key concepts and points you want to convey. From this you can create your summary and then your introduction.

People recall about 10% of what they hear and about 20% of what they see. But people recall up to 50% of what they see and hear. For maximum effect, your presentation needs to be visualised. You can use Powerpoint, or try Prezi.com for more dynamic visuals. What your audience doesn’t want is to listen to you reading bullet points from a slide.

Use slides to illustrate your point, using a maximum of 1 slide per minute. Don’t cram as much information as you can into each slide and make sure that the people at the back of a room can read them.

Practice in front of a mirror, in front of a friend, but practice out loud, this helps with voice projection. Time yourself so that you know you will keep within the timeframe.

Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which individuals cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and fruitfully, and make a contribution to their community. Mental illness, on the other hand, describes a number of diagnosable disorders that can significantly interfere with a person’s cognitive, emotional or social abilities.

In 2013, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released figures on mental health. These figures showed some worrying trends. ABS data show that females aged 16-85 years have a higher rate of mental health disorders (22 per cent) than males (18 per cent). A higher rate of anxiety disorders is the main contributor to the higher overall rate for females, who are almost twice as likely as males to report post-traumatic stress disorder. Males were more likely to have had a mental disorder at some stage in their lifetime than females (48 per cent compared to 43 per cent). This was due to a higher proportion that had a substance use disorder.

Ball’s team appeared set for an easy victory when they lead 16/8 after 12 ends, but then dropped 10 shots on the next three ends including a seven on the 14th end to trail 18/16 after 15 ends. They were then locked 20-all after 19 ends, but a two on the penultimate end and one on the last end clinched the title for the Alder Park boys. They only advanced to the Final after scoring three shots on the last end in their semi-final to edge out Owen Jefferson, Jacob McMurray, Sam Laguzza and David Govan (Valentine) 22/21. Stokes lead his team to a comfortable 17/4 semi-final victory over Brian Hitchcock, Dick Hadley, Paul Wilson & Tony Baker (Stockton).

Opening the batting Crittenden scored 102 and featured in a third-wicket century partnership with Jaymes Thomas who put together an impressive 87. Steady contributions from others including a half-century from Jack Warren saw the Seagulls finish the day at 9/349. Brinn Osland toiled tirelessly for the Kookaburras, taking 4/87 from 28 overs.

Elsewhere, runs were harder to come by, particularly at University Oval where day one saw Merewether take first innings points. Having sent Merewether in, the students would have been very pleased to bowl out the defending premiers for just 146. Michael Radnidge took four wickets whilst 65 by Josh Geary gave the Merewether total some respectability. In response the University batting crumbled to be all out in 91 minutes for a total of 49. Opening bowlers Sam Gilmour and Harry Colbert destroyed the top order

with Gilmour taking five wickets whilst Colbert took three of his own. Batting again Merewether finished in a strong position at 1/46 in their second innings.

Another team to record a low score was Waratah Mayfield who only managed 70 against Charlestown at Kahibah Oval.

Left-arm seam bowler Chris Connors took four wickets for the Magpies.

Charlestown claimed first innings declaring at 9/134. Skipper Dane Macourt scored 31 before declaring and asking Waratah to bat again. Waratah survive a difficult few overs late in the day to finish at 0/12 in their second innings.

First innings points were also secured

by Belmont against Newcastle City at Learmonth Park and Wests against Cardiff at Cardiff Oval. Belmont will take a 42-run first innings lead into the second innings next Saturday whilst Wests will resume with a lead of 60 with seven first innings wickets still in hand.

Both appear well positioned to push for outright points.

T

he result was disappointing but there was no doubting the effort in the Newcastle Jets’ 1-0 loss to the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford on Saturday afternoon.

The Jets appeared to better side for much of the contest, and certainly had their chances, but it was a 92nd-minute goal to Nathan Duke after a deflection off a Jets defender that ultimately sunk the visitors.

“I think there were a few occasions there where a little bit more polish in the front third might have got that opportunity to bury the goal,” Jets coach, Phil Stubbins said.

“We had a few shots on target there and (Liam) Reddy made a couple of good saves, we just weren’t on the front foot to get the rebound on one occasion but I think overall we did quite well.

“I don’t know what the stats are in terms of possession and everything else but I felt for long periods we controlled the game.

“The boys to a man put in a solid performance. I’ve got no real complaints in regard to how the boys acquitted themselves.”
