As a respected rapper and actor, Mos Def has balanced the fine art of his craft and parlayed them into successful performance’s on Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, plus acting roles in Brown Sugar, Talladega Nights, Be Kind, Rewind and Cadillac Records to name a few, and has gone on to appear in the critically acclaimed HBO film Something the Lord Made for which he received an Emmy award and Golden Globe nomination.

If some of the more lo, or no-fi explorations of the likes of Lou Barlow float your boat, then you’d do well to check out the first solo record from Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O. Unlike her bands’ howling swagger, Karen O has gone the opposite direction with fifteen intimate, charming and sometimes emotionally raw songs stripped back to their bare essentials - a scratchy acoustic guitar and O’s signature wail.

Standouts here include the painfully broken-hearted Come The Night and such Guided By Voices-esque vignettes NYC Baby and Day Go By. If lush, big budget production is your thing, go pick up the latest Taylor Swift record -if you’re looking for something a little more grounded, then this could be just the ticket.

Trying to outline why this whimsical film from the king of whimsy Wes Anderson (Royal Tennenbaums, The Life Aquatic) is so good would never really do it justice. Suffice to say that it’s an absolute gem.

The film recounts the adventures of Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes) a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa (F. Murray Abraham), the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune - all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically changing continent.

Brilliantly engaging.

Legends reunite If brilliantly infectious power-pop, coupled with one of Australia’s most revered rock and roll icons is enough make you say “where is this happening and why won’t they take my money?”, well fear not, dear reader because the legendary Cheap Trick are heading our way next year and, to make matters even more awesome, they’ll be bringing not only The Angels with them, but also the Baby Animals, The Superjesus and the Chiorboys in what promises to be one rip snorter of a show.

In case you’ve been living under a rock since the late 70s, Cheap Trick are the band responsible for such pop classics as I Want You To Want Me, Dream Police and If You Want My Love (chances are if Dream Police doesn’t elicit even the slightest toe-tap, let along a full-on soaring chorus singalong, then you have no soul.)

Cheap Trick and The Angels first crossed paths in 1980 playing some shows together in Europe and the U.S and a decade later, renewed their friendship on a huge Australian tour in 1990. The bands had instant simpatico, occasionally joining each other on stage and from all reports, one helluva good time was had by all.

It will be Cheap Trick’s first visit to Australia since 2008.

“We’re really looking forward to the 2015 Angels Cheap Trick tour and being back in Australia again. Maybe we can finally get back all the guitars, amps and gear I loaned them,” Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielson said.

Standing on the outside hen it comes to great Australian songwriters, there are few, with the possible exception of Paul Kelly and Slim Dusty, that can hold a candle to Don Walker.

As principal songwriter for Cold Chisel as well as Tex Don and Charlie, Catfish and a sporadic but no less brilliant solo output, Walker has created a kind of journeyman beat-poet vision of Australian-ness without ever veering into mawkish or overly sentimental territory.

Now, Walker will be heading to Newcastle for two intimate shows - the first at Mayfield’s Sunset Studios with long-time collaborator Roy Payne and the second at Lizotte’s with his backing band The Suave F**ks.

“The first show will be just me and Roy onstage together playing a set of half his songs and half mine - it’s a really small venue and it gives me the chance to get into a bit of a different situation and explore what both Roy and I do a little bit deeper,” Walker explained. “The second show, in late October will be a full band show but it will just be the solo stuff, maybe a couple of Tex Don and Charlie songs but I won’t be doing any Cold Chisel

because it doesn’t really suit the sensibility of what we do.”

Walker is hitting the road in support of his latest album Hully Gully and while it may be only his third solo album in 19 years, listening to this collection you get the sense that this is due more to a keen sense of quality control than anything else.

“There are some songs on the album that pre-date [previous release] Cutting Back,” he said. “The whole thing was recoded in about four days over a couple of sessions once we got the songs to the point of being ready without being over-baked and then we got [US songwriter and Grammy award-winning producer] Joe Henry to mix it and he really put a high end American sheen on everything.”

Walker, who will be kicking off 2015 with a flurry of Cold Chisel activity, said his passion for writing, recording and touring hasn’t waned one iota since hitting the road all those years ago.

“It’s interesting because after doing it for ten or so years, much to my astonishment I found that I was able to make a living out of this and now, to my further astonishment, it has managed to continue.”

Since their low-budget but utterly brilliant horror comedy Undead hit screens in 2003, this reviewer has followed, with a great deal of interest, the career of Aussie writing/directing team The Spierig Brothers. Their follow-up - a whip smart take on the vampire genre, Daybreakers kicked things up a notch while their latest outing Predestination makes it three from three.

Ethan Hawke plays a “temporal agent” - one of a team of gifted law enforcers who jump back and forward through time to prevent major crimes. Hawke is on one last mission to find the madman known as the Fizzle Bomber before he blows up New York in 1975. The agent’s mission is to find a madman, known as the Fizzle Bomber, before he blows up several city blocks in New York in 1975. Having failed many times to bring down the Fizzle Bomber, Hawke heads back to 1970, going undercover as a bartender and a strangely androgynous man (played brilliantly

by Sarah Snook) and that’s when things start to get strange.

You know the expression too many cooks spoil the broth?

It comes to mind when watching the latest film from Scrubs star Zach Braff.

Crowdfunded through Kickstarter, Wish I Was Here is a coming of age tale, albeit a late one, centered on struggling father, son, brother and actor, Aidan Bloom (Braff), as he tries to deal with his father’s terminal cancer diagnosis, the breakdown of his marriage and his kids’ religion.

This isn’t the first time Braff has worn the director hat. He did it a few times during his time on Scrubs and he’s carried that fine balance of humour and heart with him here. But there’s too many scenes in this film that, no doubt looked great on the storyboard, but just don’t serve a purpose in keeping the plot moving forward - some would call this fluff.

There’s no disputing Garden State, Braff’s best-known writing and directing effort, has a place among the best cult-classics in modern cinema, but Wish I was Here fails to live up.

A seasoned talent Karen O’Shea has been mesmerising her audiences with her amazing vocal talents since an early age. She has been working professionally in her home town Darwin since leaving school.

Karen then went Sydney and worked with Sydney Sound Machine and The Temple Of Groove.

In the last couple of years Karen has also had some success on the country scene playing in Tamworth during the festival and, in the 12 years she has been singing professionally O’Shea has supported numerous artists including Randy Crawford, Wilson Pickett, James Morrison, Christine Anu, Jimmy Barnes, CBD and some of Australia’s rising country stars.

She was also awarded the coveted Frank Ifield International Spur Award for best new female performer 2001.

Having had so many opportunities to sing a diverse range of songs, there is no doubt that Karen could sing almost anything and she just loves to sing.

here’s nothing that says, “get in and give this bistro a go,” quite like the words, “new chef, new menu”.

And that my friends, is exactly what’s going down right now at the Gateway Hotel , Islington, better known to locals as the G. The Gateway Bistro has got a new chef, Phil Higginson, and new look menu.

Chef Phil comes to the Gateway with more than two decades over experience working in kitchens across Newcastle, from the Customs House Hotel to the Depot, and has created a menu that blends high-end presentation and flavours with old favourites to create pub-grub that is as surprising as it is satisfying.

We were lucky enough to drop by the venue over the weekend to sample the latest fare on offer and boy, were we pleased with the nosh that landed on our table.

We kicked off the night with toasted flat bread, served with beetroot tzatziki and salsa verde - a light, fresh start to the evening.

These vibrant pink and green dips looked as great on the plate as they tasted in the mouth. The simple salsa verde, was the perfect compliment to a sweet, creamy, beetroot tzatziki.

The main courses presented a real test for this new chef - pork belly. I can talk for weeks about a good pork belly experience, but equally so can I talk about bad pork belly, so it’s essential this dish is done right.

I am pleased to report, this was honestly one of the best pork belly dishes I’ve ever had, let alone in a Newcastle pub bistro.

apple ragout, crisp asparagus spears and roast pumpkin segments. I could not have asked for a better meal.

As for my dining partner, he went with a tried and true pub classic - scotch fillet with mushroom sauce.

All you need to know about this one, like any steak, was it was cooked medium-rare to perfection - another top-class dish.

Alongside the delectable dishes we tried, the revamped menu offers gourmet burgers, pizzas with a mouth-watering selection of topics, like pulled pork, fennel and caramelised apple (yum!) pasta and favourites like fish and chips, lamb cutlets and chicken schnitzel.

Woodlock’s maiden Newcastle voyage STEPHEN BISSET

hile they may’ve started life as a “busking band”, Melbourne-based trio Woodlock are certainly making a decent fist of things with one sold out national tour under their belts this year and yet another set to kick off this week in support of their sprawling new single The Garden from their sophomore EP Labour of Love.

“This tour is going to be great because we’ll be visitng some places like Newcastle and Perth that we’ve never played before,” guitarist Eze Walters told TE. “We just feel really blessed that people seem to be into what we’re doing.”

Since releasing the Wayne Connollyproduced Labour of Love a couple of months ago, the EP debuted in the overall ARIA top 100 and spent three weeks in the iTunes singer/songwriter charts - a place that Eze said he never thought the band would be, given their humble beginnings.

“We basically started as a busking band [with brother Zech Walters on guitar and good mate Bowen Purcell on drums] and we quit our jobs, bought a caravan and went on a bit of an east coast tour just to see how things would go,” Walters said.

It seems that Aussie audiences took to Woodlock like the proverbial duck to water with the band boasting more than 17,500 fans on Facebook - no mean feat considering they are completely independent. Further, when music wags are describing your stuff as “a celestial masterpiece” you know you’re onto a good thing.

“It was a real natural progression for us,” Walters said. “There was never any real set plan to it all - it was like “well people seem to like what we do, why don’t we just be an actual band.”

Nostrovia! he rich culture and history of Russia will be celebrated at the Civic Theatre next month when the internationally-acclaimed production Kostroma, comes to Newcastle as part of their maiden Australian tour.

Speaking to TE down the line from Moscow, Kostroma’s managing director Maria Veshkina said the high-energy show charts the evolution of Russian culture, from the ninth to the twentieth century, through traditional music and dance.

“The show is very historical, tracing the history of Russia from the ninth century, through Tsarist and Communist Russia right through to today,” she said.

“Audiences can also expect to be taken on a journey from the arctic north to the Southern Steppes and from the peaks of the Causacus to the depths of Siberia.

“We bring the audience a glimpse of the different historical eras of Russia and look at how things have evolved celebrating the changes this country has undergone.”

Since its first performance in Moscow ten years ago, Kostroma (named after the place of it’s birth and the cradle of the Romanov dynasty) has wowed audiences around the world. In fact, after Pierre Cardin saw the show at a Paris premiere, he was heard to remark, “I

The swinging five piece, took out top honours at the recent Beaches Hotel Battle of the Bands, beating out the formidable talents of fellow finalists the Yellow Feather Dogs and Six Foot Fall.

Given that the band are about to release their debut long player Bad Blood, Capone told TE that the win couldn’t have come at a better time.

“Yeah, the win was just great and it’s going to help with promo a great deal especially with the album coming out,” he said. “It’s really good exposure for us and a great chance for more people to hear out music.”

It is this commitment to performance and a kind of proletarian approach , according to Yiannoukas that was the secret to the band’s success.

“In terms of live performance, I’d say we were in the top ten best live bands in the country,” he said.

“When we started, even though the songs might not have been there yet, we were all about making sure that every show was better than the last one, and I really think that commitment is what` started winning us fans. Also, it was the chemistry that existed with all of us something that is critical to the success of any band.”

ith three brilliantly genre-bending albums - Problems, Head of the Hawk and Company - not to mention countless ks clocked up on Aussie roads, Australia’s foremost purveyors of hyperactive pop-rock are calling it a day, but not before one last lap of honour around the country for good measure.

The last hurrah comes off the back of the band’s swansong -the infectious earworm I’ll Go Crazy, lifted from their upcoming compilation album Retrospectable.

“Yeah, it’s definitely going to be bittersweet, but it’s also going to be a hell of a lot of fun” frontman Stav Yiannoukas told TE. “We’ll be looking to throw some different stuff in there - I mean, it’s going to be the full tour compliment, there’ll be a pretty crazy light show, we’ll be bringing as many players as we can afford and it will be as raucous as ever, but we might throw in a few more intimate moments in there amoung the balls-to-the-wall-stuff, I think the occasion calls for it.

“Maybe we’ll have a minute’s silence.”

Yiannoukas, who said the reason for split was for everyone to “a peek at what exists on the other side of the velvet curtain, to work on new things, and to hopefully wear their sequined leotards less often”, added that he felt fortunate that the band was able to bow out on its own terms.
