SISTER ACT STRIPS BACK TO BASICS LAUREN TESOLIN goes one on one with Samantha of the McClymonts and finds out that touring as one of the most popular country music groups entails plenty of hard work...
S
ince joining forces six years ago, sisters Brooke, Samantha and Mollie McClymont have taken the country music world by storm. With their well-crafted harmonies, stunning vocals and captivating onstage presence it is no wonder that these sisters are the talk of the country music world. Having won just recently their second Aria award for Best Country Album the sisters decided to do something different and very special for their fans. For the first time since sister Brooke’s baby girl was born last year, the trio will return to the road to perform their Acoustic Harmony Tour. The chart-topping sisters will showcase fans’ favourite McClymonts songs and harmonies, accompanied by acoustic instruments. The girls say that this tour is unlike anything they have ever done before. “We really wanted to do this for our fans. They were the ones who wrote on our social media saying that they wanted to hear us sing the harmonies and since Brooke had the baby we thought it was the perfect time,” Samantha said. “The show is more intimate and stripped back and for the first time the audience will have the opportunity to be taken on our musical journey and will get to hear funny stories from our life.” The McClymonts are in the middle of their stripped back tour that comes to Rooty Hill RSL in March, and are astounded by the incredible response they have had from their fans. “We did not expect so many sold out shows and we definitely love that we get to go

back to where we started,” she said. But with a baby to look after while on tour, the sisters agree that they have to trial and error what works best for them. “Our lives are so different now, we have to be very responsible and that’s one of the biggest changes. We can’t all go in one car or sleep at a crappy motel because we have to think about baby Tiggy and Brooke – she is our guinea pig at the moment because we are just trying to see what works. We are so lucky to have understanding family and friends who help out a lot,” Samantha said. With all 22 shows almost sold out, the band is so overwhelmed and thankful to their fans for supporting them through their career. “We feel very lucky to have received all of our awards, the Aria we were not expecting, and we were shocked but very honoured and relieved that our hard work was recognised.” The girls have shared the stage with some of country music’s biggest acts including Lady Antebellum and Jason Aldean but now the girls are fast becoming country music legends in their own right. Having performed at the Grand Ole Opry, won two Aria awards for the highest selling county album and recorded all three albums in Nashville, the girls have gone from strength to strength. “Performing at the Grand Ole Opry was surreal, and then taking out the highest selling album at the Golden Guitars was something we only ever dreamed of because it meant that the fans were the ones who voted for us, which is sensational.” There are not many bands out there with the longevity or the success that the McClymonts have but the sisters are quick to

Music producers would often say to us that girl bands don’t ‘make it’... confide that with the success there have also been moments of hardship too. “We never gave up and we know we always have each other for support. Many big music producers would often say to us that girl bands don’t make it anymore and that hurt but all the negativity just made us fight stronger. “We are constantly away from our family so that can sometimes be hard but the little time we do have with them makes us appreciate them more.” After they wrap up of their five-month tour in May the girls plan to continue to spread their music internationally. “We don’t really get a lot of air time on the radio so we really have to go out there and tour so we get heard. Normally we have a whole year planned but because of the baby we haven’t gotten anything set yet, but hopefully expanding our team and music is the next step.” After performing a tour and winning an Aria for their last album ‘Two World’s Collide’ the girls are unsure when they will head back to
the recording studio. “It’s usually two years between every record but we are definitely going to start writing soon just to get a vibe and new ideas on what direction we want to go in for the new album,” Samantha said. “When you write music you don’t know how it’s going to turn out and you don’t set out to write certain songs – the story creates itself along the way. Music has changed us, it is what we live and breathe every day. It has had a huge influence on our lives and what we feel in our personal lives we try and translate in our music.”
The amazing and talented McClymont sisters will be playing at Rooty Hill RSL on March 2 at 8pm. Tickets cost $30 for adults, and $20 for children. To book or for more information call 9625 5500 or visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

FABBA FOUR RECREATE ABBA MAGIC
M
ore than 30 years ago ABBA played 11 dates in Australia before a total of 160,000 people. This trip was accompanied by mass hysteria and unprecendented media attention, and was even captured on film in ‘ABBA: The Movie’. And though the band split up long ago, their music has remained popular with generations of fans. Today, ABBA is considered one of the three largest selling recording artists in music history, alongside The Beatles and Elvis Presley. To recreate this brilliant sound for Australian audiences, FABBA was established in 1996, initially as the FABBA girls. Then in 2000, auditions were held to find Benny, Bjorn and a drummer and bass player. In September 2000 FABBA was reformed as a live six-piece show band. FABBA is now a popular corporate and world class international act comprising of professional musicians and musical theatre
performers. While FABBA are dedicated to replicating the ABBA sound, they have also added the theatrics, fun and modern style to the songs as seen in the musical come movie ‘Mamma Mia’. The FABBA show has an entire wardrobe designed to capture the complete look of ABBA – from the 70’s to now. FABBA on every occasion delivers a show that is highly energetic, visually captivating, musically brilliant, audience engaging and always totally entertaining. Don’t miss the classics – ‘Gimme Gimme’, ‘Waterloo’, ‘SOS’, ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘Dancing Queen’ and a whole heap more. FABBA takes audiences on a fantastic journey to places even the Priscilla bus hasn’t been! Catch the fabulous FABBA at the Kingswood Sports Club on Saturday, February 23 at 8.30pm. Entry is free. FALL OUT BOY’S BACK IN ACTION
F
all Out Boy’s recent two-year hiatus left a huge void in fans’ hearts. Music lovers missed the sharp lyrics and experimental compositions that became anthems for so many fans over a decade. So when the multi-platinum and Grammynominated band announced their return last week with the first single ‘My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)’ off their brand new album ‘Save Rock And Roll’ and a blockbuster tour, people all over the world awaited details with bated breath. Luckily for local fans, Fall Out Boy will be returning to Australia for an intimate and exclusive show in Sydney this Monday, March 25. Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley’s return to Australia is something of a homecoming – the boys have always had a devoted Australian following and their previous tours Down Under have collected rave reviews.
Fall Out Boy’s return performance in Sydney is more than just nostalgia. The show promises a full scale assault of both tracks we know and love plus new music that showcases their artistic maturity and shoves aside any conventions of genre. “When we were kids the only thing that got us through most days was music. It’s why we started Fall Out Boy in the first place,” the band said. “This isn’t a reunion because we never broke up. We needed to plug back in and make some music that matters to us. The future of Fall Out Boy starts now.” Armed with their trademark wit and bombastic catalogue, Fall Out Boy will set Sydney ablaze with their performances of 2013 that will have everyone talking. Fall Out Boy rock the Metro Theatre live on Monday, March 25 with all their great new tracks from ‘Save Rock and Roll’. BLUESY, CLEAN AND VERY CATCHY
I
t’s been a wild ride for young English guitar sensation Joanne Shaw Taylor – from her discovery at age 16 by Dave Stewart of the Eurhythmics, to her recent appearance with Annie Lennox at the Queen’s Jubilee concert. In that time she’s won ‘Best Female Vocalist’ at the British Blues Awards twice, toured the globe with the likes of BB King and Joe Bonamassa, and released three critically acclaimed albums including 2012’s ‘Almost Always Never’. She’s also made big waves locally with two smashing visits to Byron Bay’s iconic Bluesfest Festival. During Joanne’s appearance in front of the world at the Queen’s Jubilee concert, a mishap that occurred actually benefited her rather than hampered her career. Just before her extended solo spot on lead guitar, Joanne’s fuzz phase pedal malfunctioned, leaving her with a much cleaner guitar sound than usual.
This apparent misfortune was, however, ameliorated when she was informed that Stevie Wonder had loved her “clean, bluesy, understated tone”. This month Joanne will embark on her first national tour, backed by her all-star Australian band featuring members of Chain Award-winning, Chase The Sun. Legendary American blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa said: “There are a lot of great guitarists and singers in the blues today, what I see in Joanne Shaw Taylor that sets her apart from the rest is the ability to write a great song. Not only is she a killer guitarist and singer, but you find yourself walking away from her shows singing her songs as well”. Don’t miss the artist the world is raving about, Joanne Shaw Taylor, when she performs at the Emu Plains Sports Club on Saturday, February 23 at 8.30pm. Tickets are $20. For more information call 4735 5300 or visit www.emusportsclub.com.au. Tickets available through Moshtix at www.moshtix. com.au or 1300 GET TIX (438 849).

T
he baritone voice of internationally renowned singer, songwriter and actor, Josh Groban, is one of the most instantly recognisable voices in the
world. Groban has entertained fans across the globe with his multi-platinum songs and DVDs, electrifying live performances, and comedic film and television appearances. Groban will be joined by an ensemble of world class musicians plus a local eight-piece orchestra when he embarks on his April 2013 ‘All That Echoes’ Australian Tour, in what will only be his second tour Down Under following a stellar sold-out debut in 2007. “It is with great excitement that I announce my upcoming Australian tour,” Groban said. “The fans, the venues and the overall beauty of the country make it a destination I look forward to bringing my music to, time and time again.” Fans can expect stunning renditions of tunes from throughout Groban’s hugely
successful recording career beginning with his 2001 Australian-platinum self-titled debut album, twice-platinum ‘Closer’, ARIA top five ‘Awake’ and 2010’s ‘Illuminations’. Earlier this month, Groban released his brand new, sixth studio album, ‘All That Echoes’, featuring lead track ‘Brave’ and Stevie Wonder cover ‘I Believe’. The Los Angeles native said of the album: “I wanted this to be soulful, wanted it to be righteous, dynamic, inspirational and energetic. And mainly wanted to find the sweet spot of my singing voice again. I always find it on tour”. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear the powerful voice that has touched so many; Josh Groban live in concert with an accompanying orchestra. THE ADDAMS FAMILY IS A REAL SCREAM
B
roadway’s smash hit musical comedy ‘The Addams Family’ comes to spooky spectacular life premiering on Saturday, March 23 at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre. ‘The Addams Family’ features an original story based on the characters from the popular television series and film; and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.
‘The Addams Family’ features a book by ‘Jersey Boys’ co-writers Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, and music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. It stars John Waters as Gomez Addams, Chloe Dallimore as Morticia Addams, Russell Dykstra as Uncle Fester, Teagan Wouters as Wednesday, Ben Hudson as Lurch, Meridith O’Reilly as Grandma Addams, plus a host of young male actors as Pugsley. The production is directed in Australia by Broadway legend Jerry Zaks and choreography by Sergio Trujillo. Described as “insanely funny”, “a definite must-see” and “full of charm, wit and surprises” this musical will have the whole family in stitches. ‘The Addams Family’ premieres at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday, March 23. Tickets start at $49 and is suitable for anyone over seven-years of age. To book or for more information call 1300 723 038 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.au.

COLIN HAY IS FINDING HIS DANCE
O
n the heels of the highly acclaimed ‘Gathering Mercury’ tour, Colin Hay heads to Penrith with his 2013 tour ‘Finding my Dance’. Hay said he was inspired for this latest tour by a conversation he had with one of his fans. “An aboriginal man once came backstage after a show and said to me in a kindly voice, ‘where’s your dance? I used to like your dance, you’ve lost your dance mate, you’ve gotta find your dance’,” he explained. “So, I set out in search of it, looking here, there and everywhere in all corners of the globe. Quite soon I realised that ‘finding my dance’ is an inner search, and that whilst I may never truly find it, it matters not. What’s important is to keep searching, and in the process, refine and simplify the steps.” Themes of redemption and renewal come naturally to 59-year-old Colin Hay, as he is in the midst of a remarkable renaissance. While his voice and visage are still familiar to millions from his tenure as front man,
principal songwriter, and lead vocalist of pop sensations Men at Work (‘Down Under’, ‘Overkill’, ‘Who Can It Be Now?’), the past 20 years have found him quietly yet tenaciously re-introducing himself to new generations of fans. It has been an organic process, building momentum through constant touring, and film and television exposure. ‘Finding My Dance’ is Hay’s expression for connecting with one’s authentic self. In the process, he takes the audience on a musical journey, sometimes straight down the main road, and sometimes taking the twists and turns of the road less travelled. Whether or not you have seen him before, you will laugh, you may shed a tear, but you will most certainly be more than entertained. Hay is at the absolute peak of his craft. Don’t miss the legendary Colin Hay when he performs at the EVAN Theatre, Penrith Panthers, on Sunday, February 24 at 7pm. Tickets are $49.

What’s On The...
BIG SCREEN
SMALL SCREEN
D
he 1930’s marked an era of depression. Welcome to America 1931 where instead of living the dream you were living a nightmare. What once was a land of opportunity was now the land of great desperation. Not so for the Bondurant brothers, Forrest, Howard and Jack though, who made a run for the American dream in prohibitionera Virginia. When the district deputy threatens these bootlegging gang siblings and their illegal brewing trade, the war begins. In this grand gangster tale, inspired by the true-life story of author Matt Bondurant’s family in his novel The Wettest County in the World, the loyalty of the three brothers is put to the test against the backdrop of the nation’s most notorious crime wave. If it is violence, history, drama and love that you are after in a movie then this is definitely one to rent or buy. Director John Hillcoat in this film has an exceptional ability to capture violence in a way that breaks through cinematic desensitisation, capturing the grit and hardship that characterises this period in history.
irector Joe Wright brings Leo Tolstoy’s epic romance novel Anna Karenina to the big screen. This classic love story is set in the upper-class world of 19th century Russia. Written for screen by Oscar-winner Tom Stoppard, the story follows the tragic romance between married aristocrat and socialite Anna and the affluent Count Vronsky. If you are looking to watch a desirable and decadent movie this story is full of hypocrisy, jealousy, faith, fidelity, family, marriage, society, desire and passion. Starring in this breathtaking film is Keira Knightley as the lovely Anna and the highly acclaimed Jude Law. Both perform brilliantly to bring the audience an intoxicating spectacle that combines both theatre and cinema. This film boasts exquisite set production design, and stunning cinematography that is combined with show stopping acting that captures a beautiful love story. A must see movie to witness the classic pleasure and the pain, the perils and the comfort of the love story that Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina provides.

f you were one of the thousands of listeners eagerly tuning into the Triple J ‘Hottest 100 Countdown’ on Australia Day, then you’ll be delighted to know that the official CD is available soon. In its 20th year, this year’s Countdown was a phenomenal success with more than 1,516,765 votes cast to decide the final track listing. From dubstep to folk to hip hop and pop, the album’s selection of tunes is diverse enough to have you hooked until the last track. Featuring 41 songs from a wide range of musicians, the album has taken the best songs from both the popular and emerging scene and fused them together into one album. Topping the countdown this year was Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ kooky hit ‘Thrift Shop’. No one could have anticipated that a song about op-shopping and ‘grandpa’s style’ would become such a hit with listeners and catapult the little known music duo from Seattle to global fame. Another highlight on the album is Frank Ocean’s ‘Lost’, which unlike ‘Thrift Shop’, did not top the ARIA charts but scored seventh place on the countdown.
LAWLESS [ Rated R] Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman and Guy Pearce Date: Wednesday, February 20
The final song is the hauntingly beautiful ‘Clair de Lune’ by Australian DJ duo Flight Facilties. The seven-minute long track came in at number 17 on the countdown. Also featured on the album are The Rubens, Florence + The Machine, The Black Keys and Miike Snow. The Triple J Hottest 100 CD is available from February 22.

NOT PULLING YOUR LEG, THIS BLEND IS VERY REWARDING by David Ellis
A
ustralian winemakers are amongst the world's best when it comes to creating blends, wines that in many cases can prove far more rewarding than straight varietals. And a very interesting, and yes rewarding, blend that’s now on bottle shop shelves is Fifth Leg’s 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Merlot, a drop that winemaker, Oliver Crawford sums up as “a serious wine in a fun package”. Indeed Fifth Leg is a fun and quality label, produced by Devil’s Lair Wines in the heart of Western Australia's Margaret River region. And it was named as so after the fossilised remains of a Tasmanian Tiger with a mysterious fifth leg were found in a cave near the winery. How it got there from Tasmania, and how it came to have a fifth leg, will doubtless remain forever two of life’s little mysteries. The Cabernet Sauvignon component gives this wine dark cherry and blackberry fruit notes and grippy tannins.
On the other side, the Shiraz provides plum, pepper and spice, and the Merlot adds nice, juicy, red fruits on the nose and palate. The quality of the Margaret River fruit gives it flavour which will appeal to the serious red wine drinker as well. A great drop at $17.99 with that next family Sunday roast. One to note: Victoria's Blue Pyrenees, 180 kilometres northwest of Melbourne, was conceived by French Champagne houses Krug and Charles Heidseick (then known as Chateau Remy) back in 1963, but today it still pays homage to its French heritage by making classic Australian sparklings in the Méthode Champenoise technique. Their 2009 Midnight Cuvee – so-named because the grapes are hand-picked at night under moonlight to avoid heat of day damage – is a stand-out bubbly with loads of sparkle and delicious flavour. Pay $32 and go forth and enjoy this one at that next party or celebration.
fter sitting down and feasting my eyes upon the White Swan menu, I felt like a child again, standing in the local supermarket confectionary aisle with instructions from Mum... “Only one”. But there were too many quality choices to pick from! When my dining partner and I were prompted by the waitress who was ready to take our order, our questions were answered with a big smile. Between the two of us, both enthusiastic diners, we had ordered three entrées. I chose the Salt and Pepper Calamari, served with salad and aioli, my partner had chosen the Soft Shell Crabs and the waitress recommended the Garlic Prawns. Garlic Prawns first. The tiger prawns were drizzled in a garlic butter sauce and I was unhappy to see that I had devoured them all so quickly, they were full of flavour and I wanted more, even though the serving portion was quite large. They were definitely my equal favourite dish for the night. The Salt and Pepper Calamari was next and the flavours were surprisingly subtle. However, this may be because of the strong flavours of the prawns eaten previously. While I was tasting the calamari, my dining partner seemed to be mulling over his Soft Shell Crabs. I expressed my concern, but the reply was not one I expected. “These are the highlight, the surprise of the night.” Normally a fast eater, my partner was savouring his dish in
great delight. This is the point at which the mains came out. My eyes and stomach had been hooked by the Atlantic Salmon, while my dining partner was keeping to a favourite dish of old, the Chicken Schnitzel Valdostano. We were also to share a Mixed Grill between us. The salmon was crumbling off my fork to perfection. It tasted really good. There is no need to elaborate further, simply, I enjoyed it a lot! I could not finish the vegetables laid out on my plate with it, however, we had bigger fish to fry and I was saving room for the Mixed Grill. My partner enjoyed his Schnitzel Valdostano and suggested it would be a dish he would readily order in the future. The Vietnamese Mixed Grill came out on a hot plate, seemingly screaming at us to pick up our forks – the tantalising smell of marinated meat impossible to resist. Best of all was the marinated beef cooked with lemongrass and pepper. This was my favourite dish of the night along with the prawns. Both myself and my dining partner, both bursting at the seams, devoured the beef quick smart. Next time I dine at the White Swan, I will be filled with more indecision than my childhood confectionery troubles – try something new, or get my Garlic Prawns and Mixed Grill again! The White Swan is located at 1/269 High Street, Penrith. Call 4732 1505. - Reviewed by Ron Heath

o begin I want to let off some steam and express my disgust at Foxtel. Last week I received a notification from them saying my subscription would yet again rise by $3 per month, and that certain channels are moving packages. One of the channel swaps that baffled me the most was Animal Planet moving from the ‘Documentary & Adventure’ package, where it should be, over to… wait for it… ‘Kids & Music’. Try and make sense of that one. Firstly, I’ve never seen one music video on Animal Planet, and secondly since when are African lions hunting down a herd of deer perfect for children’s viewing? I’ve contacted Foxtel regarding the rather awkward channel swap but am still
Now to the good stuff. The new Channel Nine version of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ has finally announced auditioned details for all those talented people out there looking to make it big in the entertainment industry. ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ are looking for solo acts, group performances, bands, dancers, magicians, circus and stunt acts, singers, musicians, comedians, novelty acts, animal acts, child performers… and whether amateur or semi-professional, their doors are open to anyone of any age. To audition visit www. australiasgottalent.com.au. Heads up Bear Grylls fans – the ‘Man vs Wild’ star is back, this time fronting a new six-part series for Discovery called ‘Bear Grylls: Ultimate Survivors’. In the new series, Grylls takes his survival expertise one step further as he reveals the incredible stories of ordinary people stranded in devastatingly dire situations. Coupled with incredible archive footage and interviews with the survivors, Grylls will pit himself against the very same dangers and scenarios, re-living their journeys through first-hand experience, and showing us how to survive through some of the world’s most desolate landscapes. Sounds brilliant! Who remembers the ‘Thunderbirds’? Well, they may be back. ITV in the UK is reviving the ‘Thunderbirds’, some 50 years after it first appeared. The new series which has the working title of ‘Thunderbirds Are Go!’ will feature a “unique mix of CGI animation and live-action model sets” and will “deliver a
whole new level of action-adventure animation for today’s audience, whilst also affectionately paying tribute to the legacy of model locations from the classic series”. How’s this for awesome news, Kate Ritchie aka little Sally Fletcher is returning home after almost five years away. Ritchie’s return to ‘Home and Away’ will coincide with the soap’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Ritchie will commence filming in a few weeks with episodes likely to air mid-year. It’s unknown how long her stint will be for but there’s no doubt producers will be encouraging her to stay. Australia’s most successful short films
contest, Tropfest, will air for the first time live on SBS this Sunday. Catch ‘Tropfest 2013’ on SBS ONE this Sunday, February 17 at 8.30pm. Tropfest 2013 features 16 finalists who are selected from around 700 entries. Lastly, a show that I discovered over the weekend that actually wasn’t that bad was ‘Animal Airport’. The show follows the tales of the many creatures that pass through the doors of the Animal Reception Centre at Heathrow Airport. Nowhere else will you find as many species of animals as they journey – some legally, many illegally – across the globe. Catch it on Lifestyle first at 6.30pm on Saturdays and replayed at 1.30pm on Sundays.

FROM MAD MAX TO FIVE-STAR, BEEN THERE DUNE THAT by David Ellis with John Rozentals
T
he welcome sign casts a shadow reminiscent of Arthur Boyd’s Ned Kelly as Angus Jameson’s four-wheel-drive mounts another crest to reveal Tin City, a post-apocalyptic, Mad-Max-like settlement amid the sand dunes of Stockton Beach just north of Newcastle. And the first question one asks oneself is, how come such a place like this even exists? And the second, how come it survives the ever-shifting dunes that constantly threaten to swallow-up this mostly corrugated-iron city that would look more at home in the war zone of Afghanistan than on the doorstep of NSW’s second largest city? The answers: necessity and tenacity. Tin City evolved during the Great Depression when a dozen or so individuals and families banded together and threw up a collection of galvanised iron shanties, eking out a communal existence based largely on catching fish off their rent-free, away-from-everything beach and trapping wildlife further inland. Most drifted off after the economy improved, but the settlement re-emerged again after WWII, and while some of the oldest residences succumbed to the shifting sands, a handful are still occupied to this day – their
owners having to dig-away wind-blown sands that pile-up against their walls daily, and the local council having a moratorium on any new construction. (And yes, you have seen it in Mad Max and some TV commercials.) Angus Jameson's Port Stephens 4WD Tours is one of several companies that operate daily tours along the 32km Stockton Beach – the largest “mobile” coastal sand mass in the southern hemisphere – and incorporating a visit to Tin City amid those ever-wandering 30 metre high sand dunes. And he shares with guests his extraordinary knowledge of the local history, nature and diversity of the dunes, and their incorporated Worimi Conservation Lands that embrace Aboriginal middens (piles of shells and food bones) that are 12,000-years-old. And ship wrecks. Over 100 vessels have foundered off Stockton Beach, the largest being the 53,000 tonne Norwegian bulk carrier Sygna that was blown ashore by 185km/hr winds during an horrific storm in 1974, and one of the largest ships to be wrecked off the Australian east coast. Parts of it can still be seen today, as can concrete anti-tank traps and barbed
wire entanglements laid to prevent a feared Japanese invasion during WWII… and interestingly while the first “community” grew up with those shanties during the Depression, other buildings had actually been put up on remote Stockton Beach as far back as the late 1800’s – stocked with provisions for shipwrecked sailors. At the beach’s extreme north-east, around Anna Bay, there’s a car park for visitors, kiosk, camel rides and a magnificent slope of slippery golden sand that’s a magnet for thrill-seeker sand-boarders who career down the amazing 60-degree dunes. And while you can opt for accommodation right on the beachfront in Port Stephens, places like the five-star Amarna Resort on Dutchmans Bay Beach are certainly anything but a Tin City: a 25-metre lap pool, 10-person spa, outstanding views and luxurious furnishings are just the beginning. All one- and two-bedroom suites and three- and four-bedroom split-level penthouses here are fully self-contained with modern kitchens, large living areas, separate laundries and furnished balconies, making it the sort of place you'll probably not want to venture very far away from.
But if you do, it’s just a 15-minute waterfront stroll to d’Albora Marina, Nelson Bay’s focal point for dining and nautical activity. Or just a short drive or slightly longer walk to Peppers Anchorage at Corlette Point, which offers a spectacular location for breakfast, high tea, lunch or dinner. Port Stephens and Nelson Bay, just 2.5hrs drive north of Sydney, also provide some of the readiest access to whale-watching the busy humpback highway that runs along our east coast from around May to November, and to pods of dolphins that enjoy Port Stephens’ sheltered waters year round. Other activities include snorkelling and scuba-diving, spotting for koalas at Anna Bay, which has one of Australia’s largest populations of the marsupial, Nelson Head Heritage Lighthouse and Reserve, testing your fitness walking to the top of Tomaree Headland to enjoy the expansive views of Port Stephens and surrounding islands, and parasailing over the dolphin-rich waters. GIVEAWAY: NINJA TURTLES
T
he ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie’ is the live-action, feature film adaptation of the cult comic book and the popular animated television show. After prolonged exposure to radiation, four teenage turtles – Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, and Donatello – have mutated into ninjas and have begun living in the sewers of a large city. Under the guidance of a ninja master, Splinter the Rat and television reporter April O’Neil, the Turtles embark on a mission to run crime out of the city and battle the warlord Shredder. The Turtles were designed by Jim Henson Productions and the live-action adaptation of the hit franchise was a box office beast when released in 1990. The film grossed over $200 million worldwide, the highest grossing independent film of all time when it was released, and became the ninth highest grossing film that year. The movie was so successful it spawned three sequels in 1991, 1993 and a CGI version in 2007. A brand new movie titled ‘Ninja Turtles’, directed
by ‘Transformers’ mastermind Michael Bay, is also set to be released in 2014. In a neat bit of trivia, all the performers inside the Turtles costumes actually had small parts in the movie – one as a gang member and another as a pizza delivery man. Now for the first time ever, ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie’ has been released on spectacular Blu-ray – that’s 93 minutes of pure high definition goodness. Also included on the Blu-Ray edition is the classic original theatrical trailer, which will sure bring back plenty of memories for fans. FYI has 2 copies of ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ on Blu-ray to give away. For your chance to win, email the code word ‘TURTLES’, along with your name and phone number to competitions@mediaview. com.au. Entries close Wednesday, February 20. HEART ON YOUR SLEEVE BY ANGELA PEZZANO
H
eart on your Sleeve by local author Angela Pezzano shows the natural, nurturing, genuine, untainted, soft and delicate sides of love amongst lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals, who reveal an equally beautiful and heartwarming, romantic experience. This book explores love in its purest and most unconditional forms. It depicts an unbiased love that does not discriminate against race, gender or sexuality. The love revealed in this book is the kind of emotional experience that transcends the physical and the external, thus leaving you with only the gentlest and sincerest expressions of romance, which is a spiritual rather than sexual connection. Filled with exquisite captions and blurbs about the simplicity and beauty of love and creative photographs of real people who exude a subtle yet puissant confidence with who they are and what they stand for, this one-of-a-kind compilation is indeed a true emblem of equality and romance in its most raw and basic forms. “People have said they like it so far and were very impressed that it shows ‘beautiful’, no matter what it looks like,” Angela Pezzano said.
Heart on your Sleeve also has a local touch too as it features 10 models from the Nepean region. “The book took about six months to a year to put together and I thought it was very important to get locals involved,” Ms Pezzano said. The author, Angela Pezzano from Kingswood, is a producer, director, screenwriter and actor who enjoys everything about the creative world. Heart on your Sleeve is her first photography book in a series that she will continue for years to come. Her previous writing projects have included poetry published in anthologies and short stories for writing competitions. Her short films have been successful in the film festival circuit with feature films currently in development. Ms Pezzano said that 50 per cent of profits from the sale of her book will be donated to charities involved in the lesbian, gay and bisexual community such as ACON, who are working to have celebrity, Portia de Rossi’s book, Unbearable Lightness supplied to high schools.
