aitland road safety crusader Michelle Davis has won this year’s Lifeline Newcastle and Hunter Steel Magnolia Award.

The Steel Magnolia Award is given to a woman who has made a significant contribution to the community in the face of adversity and last year was won by Harry’s House founder Samantha Meyn.

Ms Davis received her award for founding the Helping Other Parents Exist support group and the ROADwhyz driver education program after losing her two teenage sons in a horrific Morpeth car accident in 2005.

H.O.P.E was founded in August 2007 when Ms Davis found that support services were lacking for parents who have lost children.

“It’s just an environment where people can talk about [their loss] amongst people who understand,” she said.

Ms Davis said that she started the ROADwhyz program after seeing that there wasn’t an engaging way to educate young drivers about the consequences of callous driving.

“It’s really respectful and wonderful. They often come up and shake your hand afterwards and say ‘thank you’,” Ms Davis said.

“If one changes their ways, we’ve had success.”

Ms Davis has also overcome cancer and works for Chris O’Brien’s Lifehouse charity and the Umbrella Foundation, while running her own business.

In February, Ms Davis was named as Maitland’s 2014 Local Woman of the Year.

More time-wasting in the world of federal politics last week with the discussion over Tony Abbott's decision to reintroduce knighthoods and damehoods in Australia.

I don't have a problem with the decision, but I agree with Opposition Leader Bill Shorten when he says there are far greater priorities for the government to focus on.

Knights and Dames of the Order of Australia were stopped by the Hawke government in 1986.

I know that it's in the job description of an Opposition Leader to reject most of what the government introduces but Mr Shorten's apparent outrage and determination to reverse the decision if he gets the chance is going a bit far.

It really does fall into the "who cares" category.

Yes, it's not a necessity, but it doesn't hurt or affect anyone and wouldn't be worth the time and expense of throwing it out some years down the track.

There is the argument that it is a backward step to reintroduce something that was discarded 28 years ago. However, I think honouring people with a knighthood or damehood is actually a nice way to recognise contributions made to this country, as long they are handed out sparingly.

Mr Abbott has said the honour will only be bestowed on a maximum of four knights or dames a year.

Certainly the outgoing and incoming Governor-

I want to add my best wishes to Alex McKinnon and the Newcastle Knights club following the young forward's shocking injury.

I've witnessed first-hand at Knights training the camaraderie amongst the players and know how hard something like this will affect them.

There's been some talk speculating on how long he will be out of the game for. Let's forget about that for the time being and put all our hopes into him being able get back on his feet.

You could sense there was something special about McKinnon when Wayne Bennett promoted to him to first grade at St George Illawarra in 2011 at just 19 years of age.

He made his debut in the centres against the Gold Coast and scored two tries and was one of the first players Bennett wanted to bring with him to the Knights in 2012.

McKinnon showed his toughness and maturity in 2012 by playing every match for Newcastle and has become a mainstay in the Knights' lineup.

When these accidents, as rare as they are, occur in rugby league there are always discussions on what can be done to stop it happening again.

I think it was simply an accident. Unfortunately, players will occasionally land on their head or necks. I don't think there was any intent on the part of the Melbourne player, Jordan McLean.

ess than a fortnight after the Hunter Expressway opened, traffic projections for arterial routes seem to be becoming a reality, but it could be a year before anything is formally assessed.

Roads and Maritime Services previously estimated that by 2016 Mt Vincent Road and Buchanan Road would carry 12,800 vehicles per day, an 8,200 increase from a Maitland City Council count of 4,600 vehicles per day, prior to the Expressway opening. Cessnock Road was forecasted to increase from the Maitland City Council count of 9,500 vehicles per day to an RMS estimation 17,500.

Gillieston Heights resident, Michelle Adams, whose home borders the statemaintained Cessnock Road, said it only took a couple of days for her to notice the difference.

“It’s been a double-edged sword for us, because it only takes my husband 30 minutes to get to work in Singleton now, but there’s definitely been an increase in noise.

“We used to really only get noise in peak hour, but now there isn’t a lull at all. I’ve also noticed that there are a lot of larger

trucks coming through that weren’t coming through before.”

Member for Maitland Robyn Parker said she had had numerous discussions with NSW Roads and Ports Minister Duncan Gay about the roads. “It’s certainly in his mind, and we’ll wait and see when the traffic settles a bit as to the effect on that.”

Minister Gay said that there would be a six to twelve-month waiting period before anything is done. “There are community roads that will have extra pressure [on them]. We’re going to have to suck it and see for a little while to get a feeling of where the traffic is going to end up, but we can’t be sure until we see what happens in six to twelve months.”

Councillor Philip Penfold said that Council has had conversations with the State Government over a possible contribution to the upgrade of the Council-owned Mt Vincent Road. “I do acknowledge that hundreds of Maitland's homes on and around Mt Vincent Rd and Cessnock Rd will see increased traffic movements there,” Cr Penfold said.

“I am heartened by conversations Council has had with the NSW Minister for Roads in February and comments made by Member for Maitland Robyn Parker, who clearly appreciate the need to monitor these changes, both now, and over time."

Welcome boost for community Work gets underway on new 420-student St Aloysius Primary School at Chisholm

aitland’s newest school is on track to open next year, with the Chisholm site for St Aloysius Primary School blessed

last week.

Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle Bishop Bill Wright was joined by the diocese’s Director of Schools, Ray Collins, Maitland Deputy Mayor Steve Procter and potential students Charlotte and Thomas Easey with their mother, Natalie, for the ceremony, with the Bishop also turning the first sod.

The $7.69 million school will be for 420 students, with room on the site to build a high school in the future. “The provision of a Catholic primary school in this area has been planned for a number of years,” Mr Collins said. “We currently have 168 expressions of interest for enrolment, including 87 for kindergarten in 2015.”

There are approximately 4000 students in the area’s Catholic schools, from Lochinvar to Tarro, with St Aloysius expected to take the burden off the existing primary schools. “It’s exciting to be able to open the new school here in the new community that is forming,” Bishop Wright said. “It’s terrific that we will be able to provide that facility that is obviously needed.”

Maitland District Netball Association will be holding the area’s first ‘Come and Try’ day for children with disabilities next month.

The 45-minute session for children with intellectual and physical disabilities will see them learn basic ball skills and play simple games with these skills, rather than a game of netball.

MDNA President Jenny Fullford said that the day is an opportunity for children who do not have the capability to play mainstream netball to still give it a go.

“For these little ones, they can be part of what’s happening out there in the big wide world.

“They want to be a part of everything just like everyone else.”

The day will be for children aged six to 14, and won’t be restricted to just girls.

“If there’s an interest from boys we’ll welcome them with open arms,” Ms Fullford said.

The free Come and Try Netball Clinic will be held at the Blomfield Street courts on Saturday, May 3, from 11:15am to 12pm.

args Public School hosted the region’s first EnviroMentors visit on March 21, with Member for Maitland and Minister for the Environment Robyn Parker getting in on the fun.

EnviroMentors, and initiative of Keep New South Wales, is a mobile education program that conducts interactive sustainability lessons, teaching primary school students about water conservation, waste management and green living.

The Largs students took part in ‘Drip, Drop, Splash’, learning about the water cycle, how much usable water is on Earth, and how to share the supply.

“I’ve been delighted to see how this works,” Ms Parker said.

“Having the students engage in an interactive and fun workshop will help them learn about the importance of water conservation, especially in the midst of a drought across NSW.” Water conservation isn’t the only environmental program the Largs students take part in, with teacher Rachel Leary saying that the students recycle, run a worm farm and look after chickens.

“We also have an environmental group who look after the gardens, and we have a vegetable garden which produces things to give to the canteen, or the students sell to cover the cost of the garden.”

Still going strong at 95 Bruce Owen amongst 22 honoured in seniors awards Melissah Comber

t 95 years old, Bruce Owen is more than just his age.

Mr Owen, who now resides in East Maitland, was born and raised in Branxton, where he fought for sewerage system upgrades in the 1980s, was a member of the Lions service club, as well as spending 35 years working in the mines.

“I worked hard, and I can do plenty of things,” Mr Owen said. “I’m not going to die yet. I’ve got plenty of life in me.”

Mr Owen was one of 22 recipients of the NSW Government Seniors Local Achievement Awards, presented last week at the Maitland Senior Citizens and Pensioners Association Hall by Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker. He was honoured for his work at the association, particularly for his assistance in the organisation of darts.

“I’ve never got much appreciation, so this makes me very happy,” he said.

Other awards were handed for contributions to the social well-being of senior citizens through the organisation dances, choir and carpet bowls. Ted Hemming and Basil Stemp from the East Maitland RSL Sub-Branch also received awards for the work they do on Anzac and Remembrance Days, and Joan and Mervyn Mexon, with

Bruce Owen with his wife, Heather Judy and Noel Mexon, were recognised for their charitable fundraising efforts over the last 11 years.

“These awards are the community’s way of saying ‘thank you’ to seniors for their

enthusiasm and impressive commitment to their community,” Ms Parker said.

“The seniors awarded today represent the diversity of talent, generosity of spirit and limitless energy of seniors in Maitland.”

Gaol show for hip-hop newcomers

Another $1.4 million of roadworks are set to be carried out in Maitland with an upgrade of Lindesay Street, East Maitland.

The work will include reconstruction and resurfacing the road between High Street and Cumberland Street. The work is expected to take three weeks to complete, with the work being carried out at night.

“With the Hunter Expressway now open Roads and Maritime Services has its focus on Maitland with two new projects being rolled out on either side of the city,” Member for Maitland Robyn Parker said.

Work has also begun on the $3.5 million New England Highway upgrade at Rutherford, which will see the road expanded to two lanes in each direction, between Regiment Road and Racecourse Road.

aitland’s budding hip-hop stars will be performing alongside established talent this Youth Week as part of LockUp2014.

The free event, in its second year, will see local stars Poetic, Ballence, Talakai, Collective Crew and Lomas perform alongside winners of a competition at Maitland Gaol next week.

Brady Rampton, who performs as Poetic, said that after performing in small shows around Maitland and Newcastle, he wanted to start a bigger event in the area for young people.

“It’s by youth, for youth,” he said “It’s just a night we have to get youth off the streets and see some young talent.”

Last year’s inaugural event proved to be a huge success, with over 500 people in attendance.

To ensure pedestrian safety during the ‘Show and Shine’ presentation, owners of display vehicles will be required to arrive and position their vehicle(s) no later than 9.00am on the Sunday morning, at which time the access road through the park will be closed to vehicles at the Elgin Street entrance and at the Bowling Club/ swimming pool area. Once entered, show vehicles will not be permitted to leave until the end of the event at 3.00pm.

Council is now seeking proposals from interested parties to redevelop the Pump House Building Complex at Walka Water Works (Walka) and to operate the facilities on a commercial basis under a long term lease arrangement. Walka is a unique 64.2ha reserve located only 2km from the commercial centre of Maitland and is valued by the local community as a gathering place and for numerous passive recreational activities.

The Pump House Building Complex comprises a floor area of approximately 1,159sqm and is a highly visible and recognisable landmark from surrounding areas.

A temporary bus zone will be established on Elgin Street, just north of Ken Tubman Drive traffic signals, south bound.

Hunt on for murderer after body dumped Paul Monforte

M

ystery still surrounds the death of Mayfield man Anthony O’Grady, whose hog-tied and semi-naked body was found dumped in Wickham Park last week.

Police have appealed to the public for information as they continue to determine a motive for Mr O’Grady’s killing.

“The fact that it is in a location in a public area, in the open, we are hopeful that someone may have seen something, and with that information we urge you to come forward,” Newcastle crime manager Acting Inspector Jeff Little said.

“This particular offence is not a matter of a body that someone has tried to dispose of or hide, it was out in the open and that is quite clear.”

Mr O’Grady is believed to have owned a car and boat, both of which were parked outside his Valencia Street home. The car was later found abandoned on Ash Island.

Maitland City Council has proudly accepted an invitation from the Mayor of the City of Lake Macquarie, Jodie Harrison to take part in the International Children’s Games (ICG), which will be held in Lake Macquarie in December.

It is very exciting that in 2014, for the first time, Maitland will be represented at the ICG and I hope you will all come along and support our local athletes as they compete at this international event which also happens to be the largest multi-sport youth games in the world.

The ICG is a fantastic opportunity for young people to represent their city and also meet students from different countries.

Competitors, coaches, representatives and visitors from 90 cities in Australia and around the world are expected to take part in this event and 18 local athletes aged between 12 and 15 and four coaches will be chosen to represent Team Maitland.

Given the large pool of sporting talent we have here in Maitland, the selection process is going to be a very difficult one.

I am sure our athletes will do Maitland proud just as our Special Olympics athletes did during last year’s inaugural Asia Pacific Special Olympics, which was also held here in the Hunter Region.

In other news, Council is seeking public comment on the naming of the recently-constructed McKeachie’s Sportsground at Redgum Circuit.

You may not know this but Aberglasslyn’s McKeachie’s Run was named after the pioneering family who lived at nearby Aberglasslyn House for almost 100 years, the main road through the estate has therefore been named McKeachie’s Drive in their honour.

Some health foods are killing us. Most people are familiar with macro nutrients; these are the broad groups called protein, fats and carbohydrates. None of these groups are bad. You need all of them to live.

I read a study the other day that said much of people’s knowledge on fitness topics comes from media and advertising. Things like infomercials are guiding our decisions on eating and exercise! We are consuming more ‘low fat’ products than ever. So why are we still getting fatter? Low cholesterol is another line, some people now think this is a deadly poison.

Cholesterol is essential in our bodies and helps repair our cells.

Just think for a minute; you have a business trying to sell a new food in a supermarket. The shelves are bulging with them already so how do you get anybody to look at your product?

One angle is make it sound healthier than the competition.

It’s almost funny to see the ads for a processed, sugar-filled, nutrient-devoid bar saying they’re so much healthier than that other processed, sugar-filled bar because it has ‘real strawberry’ powdered concentrate.

Much better to consume healthy, proper, unprocessed food.

This will get you the macro nutrients and just as importantly, the micro nutrients. These are all the vitamins and minerals that actually provide nutrition to your body. Without them the millions of processes your body constantly needs to perform can’t happen.

Imagine planting two similar trees; one in a pot full of sand that gets a drip of water now and then. It’s alive but only just.

The other is planted in dark, composted, nutrient-rich, well drained soil and given fresh water every day. How do you think they would compare in a year’s time?

And just taking a vitamin tablet isn’t enough. Take an apple, it has thousands of compounds, from quercetin, a powerful antioxidant that reduces cardiovascular risk, to flavonoids and phytochemicals that fight cancer. We’re not even sure what half these things do yet. But our body has evolved eating them for thousands of years and it knows what to do.

The influenza virus is one of the world’s simplest yet most devastating illnesses. One of the best ways to protect against the flu is to have an annual flu vaccination.

The flu virus has the amazing ability to mutate. Each year there may be several strains circulating within the community and at least some of those strains may be different to the ones in the previous year.

Each year the flu vaccination is manufactured to protect against the most endemic influenza viruses currently circulating. So even if you had a flu vaccination last year, it is important to update your immunisation to ensure that you are covered against the circulating strains this year.

The idea that you can develop the flu from the flu vaccine is a myth. It is not possible to get the flu from the flu vaccine because the vaccine does not contain any active (live) virus.

However, some people can experience short-term side effects, including pain, redness and swelling at the injection site, low-grade fever and muscle aches.

This can usually be treated effectively with paracetamol. It is still possible to catch the common cold because the flu vaccination only offers protection against influenza virus strains, which are completely different to the viruses causing colds.

The flu vaccination is generally very safe and is highly recommended for anyone 65 years or over and anyone with a pre-existing medical condition that may put them at greater risk of serious complication from the flu.

However, anyone is able to receive the flu vaccination and, in fact, the more people who receive the vaccination the less chance there is of the virus spreading within the community.

After waiting all season for his opportunity, Kennedy said he did not plan on giving up the number one spot anytime soon.

“It’s tough, but at the same time Birraz was playing well,” Kennedy said. “That’s just part of goalkeeping, there’s only spot available. My goal now is to play the rest of the year and hopefully the finals and if I keep playing well it will be hard to drop me, so that’s my aim at the moment.”

The Jets are back at home this weekend when they play Melbourne Victory at Hunter Stadium at 5.30pm on Saturday.

ewcastle Jets goalkeeper Ben Kennedy says he hopes to make the role of starting goalkeeper his own for the remainder of the Hyundai A-League season.

Kennedy made his first appearance of the 2013/14 campaign by keeping a clean sheet in the Jets’ 5-0 win over Wellington Phoenix at Hunter Stadium a fortnight ago.

The local shot-stopper said he had been slightly nervous in the build-up to the match, but tried not to put too much pressure on himself after being called upon to replace Mark Birighitti.

“I’m feeling much more relaxed now that I’ve got the first game out of the way,” Kennedy said.

“I was a bit nervous leading up to the that game seeing as I hadn’t played in about 18 months, but since then it has been a bit more relaxed and it has been a lot better.

“I didn’t really feel the pressure too much, I knew what I had to do and I just went in and played my own game.

“I think if you put too much pressure on yourself, you set yourself up to fail. I just tried to go into the match as relaxed as possible and I thought I did that.

Four Asian Cup matches to be played in Newcastle

occer fans in the Hunter will be treated to a visit from defending champions Japan in next year’s Asian Cup tournament.

Their opponents in the January 12 match at Hunter Stadium will be the winner of the AFC Challenge Cup with the final of that tournament to be played at the end of May. Newcastle will host a Group A match between Oman and Kuwait on January 17 as well as the second semi-final on January 27 and the playoff for third and fourth on January 30.

If Australia, who are drawn to play Kuwait, Oman and Korea Republic, finish second in Group A and win their quarterfinal, they will feature in the semi-final at Hunter Stadium.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris said: “The AFC Asian Cup is expected to attract more than 45,000 international visitors and be viewed by a potential television audience of more than 2.5 billion people, a real publicity coup for NSW. “I am particularly pleased to see four games will be played in Newcastle, which will give tourists a chance to visit the city, as well as Newcastle’s surrounding regional areas. nights captain Kurt Gidley says the playing squad will dedicate the rest of the season to injured teammate Alex McKinnon.

Gidley said the team was deeply saddened by McKinnon's neck injury suffered against the Melbourne Storm last week.

While he admits it has been extremely difficult for the players to focus, the skipper insists the team are determined to perform strongly in honour of their injured teammate.

"I'd like to think that we'd play the rest of the year for him," Gidley says in reference to playing for McKinnon. "As I say, he is a champion young fella Alex.

"He is well liked throughout the team and he loves his footy in general. He lives and breathes his footy and I know it would certainly be a tough time for him going forward with his rehab.

"But I think no one is going to get anything out of coming in here in a sombre mood, kicking stones and not moving on with the job.

Because that's not what Alex wants.

Knights forward Alex McKinnon "We've just got to work hard and keep his spirit and his determination that I'm sure he would show if it was another player in his situation."

Gidley concedes the past week has been one of the toughest in his career, especially given the club's close links to McKinnon.

"Yeah I think so, especially with Alex being a much loved teammate of ours," he says. "It wasn't until after the game that we realised it was pretty full-on and pretty devastating. It

rocked everyone and we are still all in a bit of shock and disbelief.

Asked how the side were feeling mentally given the trauma of such a horrific injury to one of their teammates, Gidley said while it has been difficult the side is focused on moving forward.

"I think everyone is still a little bit of shock at the moment, because we haven’t seen him since he left the field," he says. "I’d imagine seeing him in person would be fairly confronting, but all our thoughts are with him and his family and we are looking forward to playing this week and playing with plenty of pride."

Gidley confirmed the playing squad had plans to visit McKinnon in the coming weeks to provide any support.

In the meantime, he says putting the hard yards at training and on game day to make Alex proud will be their immediate focus. "He is going to be in Melbourne, we are not too sure how long, but we are prepared to jump on a plane and go down in different groups at times," he says.

"Hopefully he can be moved to Sydney, so there will be plenty of guys car pooling down on our days off, because we know that Alex would do the same thing for us."
