ight new police officers will be allocated to the Central Hunter command after next May’s intake, Minister for Police Stuart Ayres has said.

Mr Ayres made the announcement at Maitland Police Station last week while acknowledging the work of the command’s Crime Prevention Officer, Senior Constable Kel Boak.

Senior Constable Boak was recognised for his efforts in reducing antisocial behaviour in the Maitland Heritage Mall, when store operators became concerned about youths swearing and abusing people.

“The role our police officers play in building a strong community is absolutely fundamental to our success,” Mr Ayres said.

“I know there’s a lot of pressure on the workload here - that’s not lost on me.

“At times it’s fluctuated about how late into 2015 they [the new officers] will arrive, but our plan is to put them on the ground after the May intake.”

Senior Constable Boak said while he was surprised by the recognition, the award was not just for him.

“This recognises the good work of the general duties police in Maitland and their efforts to make sure Maitland is safe,” he said.

“My role is to interact with the community, work with them and alleviate their concerns.

“I think it [Crime Prevention Officer] is the best job in Maitland Police Station.”

Regular readers of this column will know that I obtained my driver’s licence earlier this year at the age of 36.

The only crash I’ve had since then was with a parked car while attempting to manoeuvre out of a tight spot on a steep hill in Charlestown.

What I want to write about this week are the problems of road rage and speeding.

I just don’t understand either of them.

Getting angry that the car in front you is doing one kilometre an hour under the speed limit is something that doesn’t happen for me.

Maybe it’s because I’m usually the car that is doing just under the limit.

A lot of drivers seem to think the speed limit is just a rough guide or even the minimum you should be doing.

Here are some recent examples of situations I found ridiculous and unnecessary.

You may have seen the video last week of a driver attempting to ‘undertake’ another car on Cessnock Road at Neath.

Heading east, the incident occurred shortly after the speed limit drops from 80km/h to 60km/h on a road which is only one lane in each direction.

For some reason, this driver decided that 60km/h was too slow for his liking and moved across the solid white line on the left into where cars would normally be parked in front of houses.

The result was that he ended up hitting a tree, flipping his vehicle over and into the path of the car he was trying to get past.

Luckily, the driver behind him saw what was going on and was able to avoid a further collision.

The ‘undertaking’ driver was very lucky not to be now lying in front of an undertaker and is in John Hunter Hospital with serious injuries.

What was the point of this exercise? To save a few seconds of time?

One incident I was involved in was in a newlycreated 60km/h zone.

The speed limit had been reduced from 80km/h several weeks earlier, but the driver in the semitrailer behind me obviously didn’t get the memo.

At night and on a one-lane each-way road without street lights, this vehicle to about one metre behind me with headlights on high beam and horn blaring.

It’s quite intimidating, and bloody dangerous, for an inexperienced P-plate driver to have that sort of pressure placed on them.

Somehow I kept my composure and maintained my 60km/h.

Maybe it’s our busy, fast-paced lifestyle that makes people act this way.

I understand that it’s not much fun sitting behind the wheel of a car going back and forwards to work every day, but everyone just needs to calm down.

Marjorie Allen, a literacy and numeracy teacher at Hunter TAFE’s Metford campus, was concerned TAFE NSW would end up going down the same road as Victoria.

“When the Victorian Government overhauled its vocational training system you

had colleges pushing brickies through that had never laid a brick in their life then being put to work on building sites,” she said.

“I fear we could have the same drop in standards here.”

AFE students facing higher tuition fees and teachers fearing job losses have been left his no local representation in Parliament, according to Greens MP, John Kaye.

Visiting Hunter TAFE’s Hamilton campus last week, Mr Kaye said the Government’s Smart and Skilled education reforms could see some students paying up to $9,000 more for a diploma and with no sitting members in the seats of Newcastle or Charlestown, local students had no one to advocate on their behalf in Macquarie Street.

The reforms are aimed at assisting job seekers to gain the skills they need to enter the workforce, with entitlements for entry level training up to and including Certificate III courses.

However, the cost of some courses will increase under the scheme and students over the age of 17 will be forced to contribute more to the cost of subsequent or higher level qualifications.

“Some concession holding students undertaking a Diploma in Community Services are currently paying $100 for their course,” Mr Kaye said.

“Under the so-called Smart and Skilled

NSW Upper House and was due to be voted on in the Lower House in the coming months.

“These changes will have a devastating impact for the Hunter community,” he said.

“At the same time, the electorates of Newcastle and Charlestown have lost their voice in Parliament and the Government.

“Minister for the Hunter, Gladys Berejiklian has proven herself to be an ineffective and disengaged advocate for the region.

“During the recent Budget Estimates hearing it was painfully obvious that Ms Berejiklian was not across her portfolio.”

Gladys Berejiklian declined to comment on the claims.

A spokesman for Education Minister, Adrian Piccoli stood by the reforms saying they would create a “simpler system” for students.

“Smart and Skilled is creating a simpler system with one common pricing system across all TAFE institutes and private providers,” he told the Post.

“Students will now pay only one fee per qualification, rather than paying a yearly fee.

“Scrapping Smart and Skilled would cost NSW $408 million in Commonwealth funding, leaving regional students worse off.”

The changes are due to come into effect from January 1 next year.

The saga of Maitland’s disappearing CCTV funding continues, with the Abbott Government now facing an investigation into how it distributed money from its $50 million Safer Streets Programme.

Auditor-General Ian McPhee has launched the investigation into how projects were identified after the Opposition raised concerns about the eligibility criteria and selection process.

The Safer Streets Programme awards funding to crime hotspots, and replaced the former Labor Government’s National Crime Prevention Fund.

Shadow Minister for Justice, David Feeney accused the Government of handpicking projects.

“There was no open tender, the eligibility criteria were never made public and there was no merits based selection process,” Mr Feeney said.

“No one has any way of knowing who these grants were awarded to or how much they receive.”

In replacing the program, the Federal Government was not required to fulfil any funding announcements made by the former Labor Government while in caretaker mode last year, including the $186,000 promised to Maitland for wireless CCTV systems in the Heritage Mall, Maitland train station and Rutherford shopping precinct.

Member for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon welcomed the announcement of the investigation, after previously accusing the Government of deliberately directing funds to Coalition-held seats.

“Here it kicks above its weight because it’s a small centre, but there are 600 children using the gymnastics area alone, let alone the basketball, the potential for youth to drop in and the outreach work,” Ms Parker said.

“Drainage is not a sexy thing, but it’s an important thing.”

wo Maitland councillors have expressed disappointment in the lack of public transport options in the newly-approved Lochinvar Urban Release Area Development Control Plan.

The plan was approved by Councillors last month after its second public exhibition period, which saw changes made to the open space facilities and traffic plans, including the removal of six roundabouts, three playgrounds and a carpark at the railway station.

Councillors Loretta Baker and Robert Aitchison said there was no foresight in public transport options.

“I’m happy to see the shared pathway, but I do lament the lack of planning in public transport,” Cr Baker said.

“We don’t want to become like Western Sydney - choked with traffic.

“I don’t want to wait 20 years like Western Sydney did - we need the planning now.”

Cr Aitchison agreed.

“There’s nothing worse than having a railway line and you can’t access it.”

The release area is expected to yield approximately 5000 lots.

Tips for HSC study success

Picking the best tablet

If you have type 2 diabetes, everyday illness or infections (such as a cold or virus) will nearly always cause a rise in your blood sugar levels. If you are unwell, there are some important things that you should do: 1. Test. Check your blood sugar level at least every 2-4 hours (ideal targets are 4-8mmol/L).

2. Keep drinking. It is important to avoid becoming dehydrated by drinking extra unsweetened fluids every hour such as water, weak tea (herbal teas are best), vegetable juice or broth.

3. Keep eating. Try to eat as normally as possible if you can. If your blood sugar levels are running above 15mmol/L, you can consider reducing your carbohydrate intake or increasing your diabetes medication (under your doctor’s supervision). If your blood sugars are running low, you can either decrease your diabetes medication (under your doctor’s supervision), or increase your carbohydrate intake.

If you can’t eat much but need to have something to keep your blood sugar levels up, here are some good plain options: • Fruit juice (½ cup) • Sports drink (eg: Gatorade) 1 cup • Dry toast (1 slice) • Mashed potato (½ cup) • Ordinary (not diet) jelly or custard (½ cup) 4. Call your doctor if you are experiencing vomiting or diarrhoea and it continues for more than 12 hours.

In the coming weeks Year 12 students will leave the school gates for the last time. All their schooling is done and now it is time to start preparing for the HSC. This is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful for students and their families alike.

To minimise stress, take some time to plan a study schedule or timetable. Experts suggest studying in 30-50 mins blocks, with a short break of about 5 minutes between each block - have a glass of water, play with a pet or go for a short walk. Create a study space that is comfortable, quiet and well lit. Turn off your phone and emails to minimise distractions. Stay in contact with your teachers as they can be a great resource for advice, and don’t leave revising to the last minute.

It is important to look after your health as well, so include some time for relaxation, fun or physical activity. Eat well, avoiding foods that are high in sugar, fat and caffeine. Try to avoid unwanted distractions like worries about relationships, friendships and part-time jobs. Talk to your employer, asking them to limit your hours or shifts leading up to the exams. At the end of your study day take the time to relax. Parents can help too by being flexible and accepting of the little stuff, like undone chores or an untidy room.

Good luck Year 12. We hope all your dreams come true, but in the end remember that although the HSC seems hugely important now, there is always more than one way to achieve your goals.

This week, realising that we are on a downhill slope to Christmas, I think we should discuss some present options. Last Christmas’ biggest seller was the tablet computer. It was the highest asked for present in our store by a country mile.

So which is the best? Most people these days still call the tablet an iPad, however the iPad is only one variety of tablet, made by the Apple company. There are a number of brands that play in this market including Toshiba, Samsung and Microsoft.

Most tablets run on an operating system called Android, designed by Google, which is now the biggest selling platform in the world. This is good value to consumers as there are millions of apps, often cheaper than Apple’s. Most of these Android devices are compatible with all other equipment out there. An example of this would be the Smart TV, most of which have wireless connectivity for streaming movies and music. With an iPad you would have to buy another gadget called Apple TV. Another growing platform in tablets is Windows.

Microsoft have their Surface tablet which is following in Apple’s footsteps by restricting access to apps not approved by them. On the up side, all Windows tablets come with a full version of Microsoft Office. You would have to pay for it on the other platforms.

Aspect Hunter School will be hosting iPad training workshops, after receiving a $5000 grant from the CUA Community Care Program.

The Thornton school, which opened two years ago, was built on donated land, received funding from the State and Federal Governments and charitable organisations and was constructed through volunteer labor, after being squeezed out of its former premises at Shortland Public School.

“We want to show appreciation for the community because the school wouldn’t be here without them,” Assistant Principal Jane Reeves said.

“For those who are not computer literate iPads are difficult things to wrangle.”

The workshops will aim to upskill parents to keep up with their technologically-advanced children by showing them how to navigate their way through the tablets, how apps work and how to set privacy controls.

The workshops will be open to anyone in the community.

Aspect Hunter School beat out six other schools in the votes-based competition to win the region’s prize.

Each year during Maitland’s Australia Day celebrations, Maitland City Council recognises the outstanding achievements of individuals who work tirelessly to enrich the community through their commitment and service to others.

Far too often we hear about the wrongdoings of a small group of people in Maitland and it is important that we continue to acknowledge the many talented and community minded people we are fortunate to have in our city.

During the Australia Day celebrations, awards will be presented across the categories of Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Junior Citizen of the Year.

Nominations for these awards are open now and I encourage you all to think about your fellow residents who deserve this recognition.

Council welcomes nominees from a wide variety of areas including arts, schools, the environment and community service.

Nominations can be made for a single outstanding achievement in the last year or numerous achievements made over many years.

The nomination process is not onerous and the guidelines and nomination forms can be found by visiting maitlandevents.com.au or maitland.nsw.gov.au.

Copies of the nomination form will also be made available at Council’s Administration Building.

Nominations close Friday 31 October 2014. Speaking of Australia Day, acclaimed author Barry Maitland will serve as Maitland’s Australia Day Ambassador 2015.

Barry not only shares his name with our great city but is passionate about Maitland and it is wonderful to have someone of his esteem willing to accept this important role.

group of Hunter women are putting their money where their mouths are in an effort to “kiss away the blues�.

Every day this month, the ladies will be painting their lips in bright colours as they participate in Liptember, raising funds and awareness for women’s mental health.

Bolwarra’s Leah Garner has battled anxiety and depression for the last 25 years and said she created her team, the Lippy Lizards, to challenge the stigma surrounding mental illness.

“It’s been a struggle for me for quite a long time and most of the team are the same,� Ms Garner said. “I just want to get the word out there that people aren’t alone.�

Ms Garner said that participation also has personal benefits. “Liptember is allowing me to channel all of my negative feelings into something positive and say that I’m not ashamed.�

The Lippy Lizards have already raised over $1000 for Lifeline and the Centre for Women’s Mental Health.

The familiar putt of the Honda CT110 will resonate through Maitland this weekend when 80 of the iconic motorcycles converge on the city for the Postie Bikes Australia Nationals.

As the preferred mode of transport for Australia Post, the motorcycle has picked up a cult following, something creator of Postie Bikes Australia, Warrick Penfold said could come down to its nostalgic appeal. “A lot of people who have ridden bikes started on a postie’s bike,� he said. “We’re reliving our childhood, I suppose.�

This weekend’s event will see enthu-

siasts from as far away as Brisbane meet at Maitland Gaol for a dyno shootout (a competition of horsepower) and a show and shine event on Saturday, before heading off on a poker run to Gresford on Sunday.

The show and shine event will be open to the public from 5pm at a cost of $10.

Mr Penfold said all types of bikes would be on display at the event, from the kind of bike you would see at your mailbox to others that have been completely customised. “Everyone knows what a postie bike is, and I think that’s what people like about them - everyone knows what they are,� he said.

Proceeds from the event will go to Hunter Valley Men’s Crisis Support.

Cessnock councillor, Cordelia Troy to representing the community as a councillor and ruled out in running as an independent against Mr Anderson at the state election Meanwhile, Cessnock Council will seek an urgent meeting with the NSW Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli to urge him not to close Wollombi Public School Council debated the issue after Cr James Ryan and Cr Allan Stapleford attended a

public meeting at Wollombi Community Hall last week where residents rallied to save the school.

Wollombi Public began the school year with ten students enrolled but were now coming under increasing attention with five having left throughout the year.

“I am very pleased to say that Cessnock Council is standing up in support of Wollombi School and small schools in general,” Cr Ryan said.

“It’s clear to me that until certainty is restored to the school and the Minister agrees not to close it, it will be difficult to convince more parents to send their children there.

“By creating a cloud of uncertainty the Department is contributing to low enrolments.”

Cr Ryan raised a motion of urgency at last week’s Council meeting to fast-track the proposed discussion with the Minister as well as Duty MLC for Cessnock, Trevor Khan.

“The resolution passed by Cessnock Council requests that the Department work with the community planner from Cessnock Council to estimate the potential for future development in the Wollombi School catchment area, and to provide a more accurate estimate of the school aged children in the area,” he said.

Gary ‘Angry’ Anderson has been endorsed as the Nationals candidate for the seat of Cessnock in the upcoming March State Election.

The frontman of Aussie rock outfit, Rose Tattoo was unanimously endorsed by the party last week and will come up against incumbent Labor MP, Clayton Barr.

Mr Anderson told the ABC that he was no stranger to the electorate.

“I come up here motorcycle riding quite often,” he said.

“I’ve got friends up here and it’s a beautiful, aesthetically speaking, part of the state, so the transition - I’ll be very, very comfortable here if I’m accepted.”

He also said that education, unemployment and access to medical services would be on his radar.

Mr Anderson ran in last year’s Federal Election for the Nationals in the seat of Throsby in the state’s south, where he picked up 10.1 per cent of the first preference vote.

aving quit the Liberal Party last week, Councillor Cordelia Troy says she will be voting Labor at the March State Election after the musician Gary ‘Angry’ Anderson won National Party preselection for the seat of Cessnock.

Cr Troy said her decision to resign from the Liberal Party went far beyond the selection of Mr Anderson, but it had been a contributing factor given that the National Party form part of the Coalition.

“I would rather vote for Clayton Barr [incumbent State Labor MP], than a novelty candidate,” she said.

“At least Clayton is local - you see him around town all the time.”

Cr Troy also took issue at the expected cost of the advertising and publicity that would surround Mr Anderson’s campaign.

“I think political advertising is like a rugby league scrum - it serves no purpose,” she said.

Cr Troy said she had become disillusioned with the direction of the Liberal Party as a whole.

“I feel that at a State and Federal level, the party has moved beyond the pale and I can’t just suck it up and stay silent any longer,” Cr Troy told the Post.

unter Sports High at Gateshead have yet again represented the region with distinction despite being defeated in the final of both the Bill Turner Cup (boys) and Bill Turner Trophy (girls) tournaments last week.

The finals series of the national soccer competitions for students 15 years and under were held at Darling Street Oval, Hamilton South with the Hills Sports High from Sydney narrowly overcoming Hunter Sports 1-0 in the girls division.

“We had a massive game the day before against Westfields (Sports High a 3-1 win) and I think there was a few tired legs in the first half,” Hunter coach Ash Wilson said.

“The second half they came out and turned it around a little bit and we were unlucky not to pull a couple of goals back.

“Hills are a strong team right across the field… both teams put on a great show.”

Brisbane’s Cavendish Road State High School scored twice in each half to beat Hunter Sports 4-0 in the boys’ final.

“We weren’t quite at their level and I think the result was a fair one,” Hunter coach James Pascoe said.

There was some consolation for the locals with Hunter Sports’ Kobie Ferguson and Jed Hornery named player of the series in their respective tournaments.

In the girls’ Trophy tournament, Maitland Grossman High School at East Maitland made the final 32 of the girls tournament, where they defeated Great Lakes College at Forster 3-2 before falling 5-1 to Hunter Sports High.

St Pius X High School at Adamstown made the final 32 of the boys tournament but were eliminated 1-0 by Gosford High.

fter what can only be described as a tumultuous season, the Knights capped off 2014 on a high on Sunday afternoon, downing the Dragons 40 10 at Hunter Stadium.

Buoyed by the emotion of Old Boys Day, the Knights wrangled a solid victory over the eleventh placed, Dragons.

Adam Cuthbertson found space early in the piece, gifting the Knights a valuable opportunity 10-metres from the opposition’s line.

The next play saw Robbie Ronchow step around the Dragon’s defence to enable Joseph Leilua to score the side’s first try.

Gidley added the extras to give the Knights a 6 - 0 lead five minutes in.

A Jarrod Mullen and Gidley combo made it 12 - 0 in the fourteenth minute, with Mullen sidestepping his way across the try line off a ball from Willie Mason.

Leilua was again dazzling the Dragon’s defence, breaking through the line for a powering run before being collected in a crushing tackle. He was stretchered from the field and did not return due to concussion but was cleared of a neck injury.

As the Dragons were awarded a penalty on the Knights’ line, a melee broke out on the wing which saw Tyrone Roberts and Dugan spend 10 minute in the sin bin.

The Knights were awarded the penalty but the Dragons scored next after working the ball out to left edge to put the captain, Brett Morris, over in the thirtieth minute, but Gareth Widdop failed to convert and the score became 18 - 4 in favour of the home side.

An error from the Knights after kick-off gave the Dragons another chance, which Morris seized.

He crossed, but a gutsy display from Mullen saw Morris dragged across the sideline before he could ground the ball.

With just minutes to go in the first half, Sione Mata’utia grounded a try in the corner after Tahu skillfully batted the ball to his younger winger.

Gidley added the extras to send the Knights into the sheds with a valuable 24 - 4 lead at halftime.

Returning from the break, Tahu scored his

second try of the match off the back of a 40-metre charge from Dane Gagai.

Gidley’s conversion took the Knights to 30 - 4.

Next Gagai got his chance after a frenzy on the try line, which saw the Dragons trailing 34 - 4 in the fiftieth minute.

A minute later, a long ball from Roberts landed on the chest of Sione and gifted the 18-year-old his second try of the match, with Gidley adding an extra two points to bring the scores to 40 - 4.

The Dragons claimed the last try of the day, taking advantage of the Knights unsettled defence and sending hooker, Kyle Stanley through a gap to score.

Widdop made the kick for a final score of 40 - 10.

The game was the last with Newcastle for Willie Mason and coach, Wayne Bennett.

Bennett said he was proud of the teams end-ofseason effort.

“It was really nice and I’m really proud of the players and their effort,” Bennett said at the postmatch press conference.

“They have a bit of confidence in the last couple of months, particularly at home, we’ve played so well at home compared to when we’ve played away.

“We finished as a team and that’s more important than anything else.”
