Locals shine on the international stage at Asia Pacific Games Melissah Comber

I

t was their time to shine. 2500 athletes converged on the Hunter last week for the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games, participating in nine sports over four days of competition, and the almost 400-strong Australian team had four local stars. The Athletes’ Oath – “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt” – was proudly displayed by Maitland’s Claudia Jackson (basketball), Jarrod Lantry (soccer), Aaron Bartlett (soccer) and Kurri Kurri’s gold medal winner Ranon Holstein (swimming) as they donned the green and gold. The games celebrated athletes with an intellectual disability and had participants from as far away as Japan and Nepal. Special Olympics International CEO, Janet Froetscher said the Games were about creating opportunities of accomplishment for the athletes. “Every day around the world we create opportunities of acceptance and inclusion through our sports, health, education and community building programs,” Ms Froetscher said.
