ichelle Davis’ personal tragedy has potentially saved thousands of lives, and has now seen her named as the Maitland 2014 Local Woman of the Year.

Ms Davis is the co-founder of both the Helping Other Parents Exist (H.O.P.E) support group and the ROADwhyz young driver program, born from the loss of her two teenage sons in car accident at Morpeth in 2005.

“It’s just an environment where people can talk about [the loss of a child] amongst people who understand,” Ms Davis said of the H.O.P.E support group.

“Some people come just to hear that they’re normal.

“We’re talking about our own children, but the feelings of loss are very similar.”

After attending a road safety seminar in Rutherford, Ms Davis teamed up with the police to create ROADwhyz, an education program aimed at young drivers.

The program visits up to 30 schools across the state each year and features presentations from emergency services and workshops.

“If one changes their ways, we’ve had success,” Ms Davis said.

In presenting Ms Davis with her award, Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker said she was proud Ms Davis came from Maitland.

“For anyone that has heard Michelle speak to a room, you could hear a pin drop, she’s so inspirational.”

Ms Davis is seeking sponsorship for a program to provide free professional driving lessons to young people, and can be contacted on 0413 676 026.

Hands up those who didn’t watch a single second of the Winter Olympics?

My hand has to go up as I just couldn’t generate any enthusiasm in switching over even though a lot of the events were on at a reasonable viewing hour.

In saying that, I thought Channel Ten/Southern Cross did their best to promote the coverage via several forms of media.

I have to say though that I have the greatest respect for the athletes who competed in Sochi. I can’t manage to take even one step while wearing ice skates let alone ski down a mountain, so they deserve plenty of credit for the very real risks they take every time they step out to train or compete.

It had nothing to do with the fact that Australian athletes weren’t realistic medal chances in a lot of events, it's more that a sport needs to have a ball involved for me to be really interested.

Rugby league is at the top of my list, with cricket a close second. Rugby union and soccer are on the next rung, but they are a fair way below league and cricket on my interest scale though.

There has to be no rugby league on any channel for me to consider union and soccer. The exception is if the Jets are playing. Local teams playing virtually any sport will get my attention.

And yes, in my opinion, it should be called 'soccer' and not 'football'. Football in the Hunter means rugby league. I know soccer is played in

Rugby league is at the top of my list

about five million countries around the world and they all call it football, but we don't have to follow.

I generally consider myself a sports fanatic, but thinking about it now, my interests in this field really are quite narrow.

I do watch a fair amount of the Summer Olympics, though. I think this is mainly due to the greater hype and publicity surrounding athletes in the athletics and swimming.

I mean, there's no way any sporting fan would miss the chance to see Usain Bolt in action or to watch our numerous Aussie swimming champions stick it to the Americans.

Just on the Auckland Nines tournament - I thought the quality of football was outstanding.

I initially had concerns that it would be too much like Sevens rugby union, but the extra two players seemed to keep it more like a real league match.

There would not be a person in the world who would swap places with Leeza Tracey Ormsby at the moment.

She is the New Zealand citizen, living in Sydney, who was arrested in Bali after drugs were allegedly found in her villa.

She has denied any knowledge of the drugs, but faces one hell of a time getting out of this mess.

I know Bali is a beautiful, relaxing place and 99.99% of Australian tourists visit without incident and have a great time, but it sure does make me think twice about heading over there.

Lights out on city’s heritage Melissah Comber

aitland’s Levee development has not been without its share of controversy and now another battle has erupted – this time over the lamps that currently dot the Heritage Mall.

The replica gas lamps, installed during the bicentenary in 1988, have not been included the Levee plans, leaving the city’s heritage buffs fearful for their fate.

John Rademaker, from community action group Save the Lamp Posts, believed the lamps were an important part of Maitland's urban landscape.

“The lamp posts are a thread that runs down our heritage street, tying together our architecture,” he said.

“I think [the Mall] has been contaminated by our modern architecture.”

Maitland City Council has called for Expressions of Interest for the sale of the lamps.

“They don’t have heritage value at all,

but they do have community value,” Councillor Bob Geoghegan said.

Chris James, also of Save the Lamp Posts, would like to see the lamps relocated throughout the city, pointing to the lamps outside Morpeth Museum and the old Morpeth Post Office (pictured) as examples.

“They could stand in front of important historic buildings and streetscapes,” Mr James said.

He also suggested that they could be solar powered, but do not necessarily have to be functional.

“I’m sure people would be happy to have them as a static exhibit.”

Mr James said that the lamps give character to the city and was worried that they would be purchased and dismantled.

“Every other city with heritage precincts is putting the lamps back.

“We’re hell bent as a community to save them and relocate them.”

T

he Rutherford Technology High School upgrade will be completed by 2017, NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli has said.

Mr Piccoli visited the school on February 10 to inspect plans for the $15 million refurbishment, which includes 12 new classrooms, improved disabled access and renovated science and kitchen facilities.

The Maitland Tutorial Centre, currently in Telarah, will also be relocated to the site in a purpose-built facility.

The funding was allocated to the school in last year’s State budget, but Mr Piccoli said there was more money coming.

“There are additional funds coming through the new Resource Allocation Model for schools this year,” Mr Piccoli said.

“In 2014, Rutherford Technology High will have more than $390,000 extra in support through the new socio-economic and Aboriginal allocation compared with last year.”

The 28-year-old school was originally built for 800 students, but last year had an enrolment of 1147.

“With this redevelopment the school will be able to meet future enrolment demands, replace demountables with permanent classrooms and provide new space for teaching the performing arts, for students with special needs, and for staff,” Member for Maitland Robyn Parker said.

hadow Minister for the Hunter, Sonia Hornery, has slammed the decision to transition general counselling services across the region to Medicare Local and other non-government organisations (NGO) saying the move will leave the most vulnerable struggling.

Under the changes, those with mild depression or anxiety, people struggling to adjust to major life changes or experiencing ongoing stress due to family or relationship issues will access general counselling services through Hunter Medicare Local or other non-government organisations, while more complex conditions will be supported through Hunter New England Health’s specialist counselling services.

Hunter Medicare Local, Relationships Australia, Hunter Women’s Centre, Headspace Maitland and Newcastle, Catholic Care and the University of Newcastle Psychology Clinic have already committed to provide general counselling services to new and existing clients under the scheme.

The Member for Wallsend said the changes would see those in need of care paying more. “I am appalled that anyone would think this is acceptable,” Ms Hornery said in a statement. “Many of the alternative

services suggested by Hunter Health are at a cost to the patient. If counselling services are not easily accessible and affordable then the cost will only be transferred to the health system when these people find themselves without the preventative care that counselling provides.”

In a statement, HNE Health said the majority of providers offer bulk billing while others may charge a minimal part payment. HNE Health CEO, Michael DiRienzo said changes to health at all levels of government meant it was time to transition services to the non-government sector.

“For many years, HNE Health counselling services ensured people had good access to care at a time when few private and NGO providers could match their services to community needs and demand,” he said.

“In the past decade the range of alternative services has grown significantly and many of these providers now duplicate our services. The National Health and Hospitals Network Agreement specifically states that generalist counselling services should be delivered by primary healthcare organisations, so it’s the right time to make this important change.”

HNE Health will continue to facilitate referrals to counselling services. Funding that would have been spent on generalist counselling services will be invested back into core HNE Health services.

Clean Up Australia Clean Up Australia Day is here again, and Maitland City Council is seeking help from residents to make it a successful one.

The event will be held on Sunday March 2, and Council is asking site clean ups to separate recyclables from general waste.

“Council is seeking the community’s support in reducing the amount of waste going to landfill by separating general waste and recyclable waste collected as a part of Clean Up Day activities,” Council’s Manager Development and Environment, David Simm said. Council asks that they are notified of clean up sites, to ensure collected rubbish is not left to blow back into the environment.

Youth Week Applications are open for local community groups to receive funding for Youth Week activities.

Held from April 4 to April 13, Youth Week is celebration of people aged 12 to 25 and the positive contributions they make to society. “Local community groups can apply for funding through Council’s Youth Week Grant program,” Maitland City Council’s Acting Manager Community and Recreation, Mary Dallow said.

“Council contributes $1845 to this program, which is matched dollar for dollar for the NSW Office of Communities.

Lochinvar Out of School Hours Care group granted $9000 Melissah Comber

T

he Lochinvar Out of School Hours Care group is the latest beneficiary of the Community Building Partnership, receiving $9000 to build a deck and shaded area.

Run by YMCA NSW, the group provides before and after school care out of an old hall at St Patrick’s Primary School, but does not have a permanently-shaded area for the children to play. Children’s Services Coordinator Gail Richards said it will be a shared area with the school, which will strengthen their partnership. “We’re not just about babysitting the children, we’re about being a part of the community,” she said.

The service started in August 2012, and looks after approximately 15 children in the morning, and 30 in the afternoon, from the neighbouring Catholic schools, as well as Lochinvar Public School. “Without this, they would go home at the end of the day and there would be no one to look after them – where’s the safety in that?” Ms Richards said. “To me, it’s a home away from home for them.”

The Community Building Partnership program provides funds to community groups and community activities to improve infrastructure.

The Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Association of Australia (POSAA) are holding a High Tea fundraiser at Café Elan, Chateau Elan on Saturday 1st March with all monies raised going towards POSAA offering a national support line for women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects 12% of Australian women. Some of the symptoms of PCOS include infertility or reduced fertility, irregular or absent menstrual periods, hirsutism, hair loss, acne, obesity and polycystic ovaries.

In addition, women with PCOS can be at increased risk of insulin resistance, diabetes, cholesterol and blood fat abnormalities, cardiovascular disease and endometrial carcinoma (cancer).

Diagnosis of the syndrome depends on the knowledge and skills of doctors to piece together the symptoms from patient history and physical appearance.

The support line will allow PCOS sufferers and their families to speak to a person with PCOS and have their questions answered. POSAA is a not-for-profit organisation and celebrated 15 years in operation last year. The association is run entirely by volunteers and relies on membership fees and donations.

The ‘Waste Less Recycle More’ program will deliver $465.7 million over five years to reduce waste, divert it from landfill and encourage a change in behaviour.

aitland City Council has affirmed that green bins are well and truly on the agenda.

The Council confirmed at last fortnight’s meeting that they have applied for a $1.3 million grant to purchase the bins through the State Government’s ‘Waste Less Recycle More’ program.

Councillor Philip Penfold, a strong proponent for the service, said that if Council is successful, they may not receive the full amount applied for, nor will the service be delivered within the next 12 months.

“Organic waste will have to be a part of what we do in the future to meet our waste minimisation targets,” Councillor Penfold said.

“An opportunity like this is a little premature for the Council, but it’s too good to pass up.”

Maitland’s 27,000 household’s put 5000 tonnes of organic waste into the general rubbish bins each year.

Councillor Penfold said that should the application be successful, residents should see the service within one to two years, after the finer details have been worked out.

“One issue will be determining what we do with the organic waste once it’s collected.”

Charge over child's death

Charity fraud charges

Detectives investigating the death of a child at Clarence Town in 2011 have arrested and charged a man. Police were called to a home on Queen Street on 17 July 2011 where they located the body of a nine-year-old girl.

Following an exhaustive investigation, strike force detectives attended a Clarence Town home last week where they arrested a 60-year-old man.

The man was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where he was charged with manslaughter.

He was given bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 17 March 2014.

Two people have been charged after they allegedly claimed to be charity workers.

Police were called to Advantage Avenue, Morisset, about 10.30am last week, responding to reports a man and woman were acting suspiciously. In a couple of weeks’ time I will be attending an Open Day at Maitland Jewish Cemetery, which will showcase all the wonderful conservation work completed as part of the Conservation Management Plan for the site.

Since the first phase of the project commenced in November last year, 27 monuments have been successfully stabilised and restored.

From what I have been told the work involved in preserving these historical monuments was incredibly complex and I am looking forward to learning more about the conservation process from head Stonemason Sach Killam, who will be on hand to provide a guided tour of the site.

A host of speakers including Maitland Regional Art Gallery’s Joe Eisenberg and local historian Janis Wilton will also be in attendance to talk about the historical and cultural significance of the Cemetery.

Following the Open Day, the community are invited to visit Maitland Jewish Synagogue which I am sure will provide an even bigger insight in to Jewish culture.

As the oldest dedicated Jewish burial ground in New South Wales, it is important that we do everything we can do to conserve the Cemetery and I want to acknowledge the volunteers of The Friends of Maitland Jewish Cemetery who have played an integral role in the development of a long term protection plan for the site.

Police in raid on bikie gang clubhouse Rebels' Newcastle premises dismantled

P

olice have raided the Newcastle clubhouse of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang.

Police entered the former pool hall on King Street at about 11:30am on Thursday morning, dismantling the facility and removing a number of items including rebels paraphernalia, alcohol, beer tickets, gym equipment, and a range of furniture.

One person was arrested at the location and taken into police custody.

The premises was the third local outlaw motorcycle gang clubhouse to be searched by police within a week, following similar raids on a Comancheros clubhouse at Tea Gardens on Thursday, February 13 and the stripping of a Life and Death clubhouse in a Boolaroo industrial park the following Saturday.

Detective Superintendent Deborah Wallace said police were committed to disrupting the activities of outlaw motorcycle gangs through regular provocative operations and ongoing covert investigations.

“As long as these gangs carry out illegal acts, we will be doing everything we can to disrupt their activities,” she said.

“We will continue to dismantle clubhouses, we will continue to regularly inspect their vehicles and, critically, we will continue to conduct thorough investigations into the serious criminal activity that a number of outlaw motorcycle gang members involve themselves in.”

Detectives believe the property was converted into a clubhouse in recent weeks and will be examining whether there was a breach in the development application of the premises under the Enivronmental Planning and Protection Act.

Seniors are main target Fair Trading Ministers visits with advice to avoid scammers iracle cures, deceitful salesmen and dodgy tradespeople are becoming all too common, and the NSW Department of Fair Trading is warning Maitland residents to be aware.

The Department conducted seminars in Maitland last week targeted at senior citizens, a demographic Minister Stuart Ayres said is a popular target. “[Scammers] will look to vulnerable people, and the elderly often fall into that category,” he said.

“They are a trusting group of people who often grew up giving their details out.”

Minister Ayres attended Central Maitland’s Benhome last week, warning about different types of scams. “They can be quite elaborate and be built up over time,” Minister Ayres said, listing scams that involve long lost relatives and romance as quite common. "They make a lot of phone calls seeking details, and victims end up providing a lot of information over time.”

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, scams cost Australians $93 million in 2012. Mr Ayres' advice for those who think they may be being scammed is to be alert, verify facts before handing over money and report any dodgy activity to the Department.

No news is good news for optimism

Shopping experience ruined by sales staff

After a few minutes of watching parents killing kids, lovers killing partners, drug dealers selling stories, random shootings and all sorts of political fighting, I have realised watching sensationalised news will quickly put to an end any hope of being an optimistic, positive human being.

Einstein said, “The most important decision a man will ever make is whether he lives in a friendly universe.”

I think what he was getting at was how you believe the world around you operates is how you interpret the things that happen to you everyday, a bit like the old ‘glass half full’ saying that floats around.

It turns out, people who believe they live in a friendly universe are looking for opportunity at every turn.

People who believe they live in an unfriendly universe look to be persecuted. They live in fear, and fear is the enemy of just about everything healthy.

There are many studies showing how health is massively affected by fear or stress. And none of them are positive.

Many news directors have made a choice that is understandable in our capitalistic system. They want to attract as many people as they can so they can get the most money possible for the commercials that run within their broadcasts.

And so, as many a young reporter is told from day one, “if it bleeds, it leads,” meaning the bigger the tragedy the better the story it will make.

Well at least there is a simple answer to this one. If it’s making you angry or your gut churn to watch the lead story, turn it off!

That’s what bad health feels like.

If I wouldn’t want my six-year-old to watch something, why do I need to watch it?

He still thinks the world is a great place full of lots of good people, he’s got the time and energy to be creative and positive all the time and that’s a great healthy place for him to be in.

Now call me naïve but I think I want to be in the same place.

Living with stress and anxiety is not my idea of leading a healthy life.

There is a fine line between a good and a bad shopping experience, between one that leaves you happy and one that leaves you mad, between one that has you reaching for your wallet and one that keeps your wallet in your bag.

For me, this fine line all comes down to the shop assistant. This week I had picked out a couple of items at a store and was waiting in front of the counter to be served. With the clothes in my hands, I was obviously ready to make a purchase but I was being ignored.

There was a shop assistant behind the counter, who I am positive had seen me standing there, chatting to the other shop assistant, who had just clocked on, about their weekend. I stood waiting for five minutes (seriously, I timed it), as they chatted about how hot that guy was and how much fun they had, before finally I was acknowledged.

I was expecting a “sorry to keep you waiting, how can I help?” but instead I got a rude “are you right?” in a tone that suggested I was interrupting the world’s most important conversation. I politely replied with “no, actually I am waiting to be served. Is this where I pay?”.

The girl grabbed the clothes from my hand with a huff and struck up the conversation with her friend as I stood by fuming. Is it wrong of me to expect to have the full attention of the shop assistant?

I have always been under the impression that it is their job to make my shopping experience pleasant... I understand that sometimes you have a bad day (I have had many myself) but surely that shouldn’t be taken out on a customer.

And for the record, from the conversation I was hearing, this particular shop assistant was not having a bad day. After collecting my purchase I still thanked the assistant for her service (she didn’t reply and may have even given me a dirty look, I’m not sure) and solemnly vowed to never visit that store again – imagine if the owners knew.

I didn’t complain to management, I didn’t even complain to the offender herself, I just walked off to spend the rest of my day in a bad mood. I am 100 per cent sure that this is not the way my experience should have gone.

hey may’ve been a little quiet since their 2009 acoustic album ‘Dancing in the Storm’ but Melbourne-born pop-rockers Boom Crash Opera are certainly making up for lost time.

With a best-of compilation, ‘The Best Things’ and a four-album box-set ‘Rattle It Out’ currently doing their thing, the band are about to embark on a national tour that will see them swing by Bimbadgen for a bill of Oz rock legends including Jimmy Barnes, The Angels and Ian Moss. Frontman Dale Ryder told TE that the band were literally ‘champing at the bit’ to get back out on the

road. “Absolutely – it’s great to be getting out there again,” he said. “We played a couple of warm-up shows in Adelaide and they went really well and Day on the Green shows are just the icing on the cake.”

Ryder said the band, who were responsible for such classics as ‘Onion Skin’, ‘Hands Up In the Air’ and ‘Her Charity’, were undergoing a bit of a renaissance at the moment, but it was more about having fun than putting their nose to the rock and roll grindstone.

“Yeah, we played some Day on the Green shows last year that went really well and after that we were sitting around listening to the songs and we realised that there was plenty of life in Boom Crash Opera, yet,” he said. “There’s a lot less pressure this time around – it’s more about having fun, I mean we’re under no illusions of conquering the world, we just want to get out there and have a good time.”

Aside from an inherent ability to write songs with more hooks than Rex Hunt’s tacklebox, Boom Crash Opera were also no slouches in the live arena, earning a reputation as one of the most energetic bands on the circuit. Ryder said that there was no need to get match-fit for the upcoming shows as all the energy he needed was contained within the songs.

“It really is the songs – I just can’t help but to jump around and such when playing them,” he said. “Peter [Farnan, guitarist] is just so good at injecting that energy into the music and there’s a certain bombastic attitude about our music that makes it quite easy to give it your all.”

yrone Roberts has lived in Newcastle since he was 14-years-old, so he couldn't envisage living anywhere else.

Roberts' close affiliation with the Steel City and the Knights is a major reason why he re-signed with the club for a further two years, until the end of the 2016 season.

You see, the halfback wants to remain in red-and-blue long-term so he can follow in the footsteps of Kurt Gidley and Jarrod Mullen and finish his career as a one-club player.

"I’ve been here since I was 14, so I’ve grown to be a part of this club," Roberts says. "I am just thankful that I can get this over and done with and concentrate on my year. Hopefully I can become a one-club player, because I’ve been in the system since I was 14 and that would be a great achievement. I’m looking forward to the next two years and hopefully it can continue."

Roberts came of age as a footballer and person last season, leading the club to the play-offs from halfback. The 22-year-old credits coach Wayne Bennett for much of his personal growth in the past two years. "It’s been a great off-season and he has shown me a lot of patience," he enthuses.

Tyrone Roberts will remain in the red-and-blue until at least the end of 2016 "I’m just grateful that I can re-sign for another two years and hopefully go for a lot more. I’ve got good combinations with the players and I’m really achieving a lot of goals at the moment."

Roberts captained the Knights for the first time earlier this month against the Indigenous First Nations Goannas. The Grafton-born No.7 rates

that one of the highlights of his career and would love to get another opportunity to lead the club.

"That was a big moment for me taking the boys out against the Goannas," he says. "I love this club and to get another two years is great so I can settle down and look to the future.
