Ticking off one of life’s important achievements - albeit 20 years late Last week, I achieved what many people would consider to be one of life’s important milestones - getting my P plates.

You’ve probably immediately diverted your eyes over t o m y he adshot a nd t hought “ He g ot h is P plates? How old is this guy?”

For the record, I’m 3 6 years old and have never had a l icence pr ior to t his. The ne xt question, of course, i s “ Why h aven’t I g ot m y l icence b efore this?” a nd i t’s one I’ ve b een a sked m any t imes over the years.

To be honest, it just never appealed to me. I grew up in Sydney in close to proximity to the train line which provided direct access into the city.

When I started working in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, I found it very easy to simply jump on the train and bypass all of the traffic.

As a teenager, I didn’t have that eagerness to get behind the wheel as soon as possible that almost all youngsters do. As the years went on, I became used to relying on public transport.

In Sydney, you pret ty much get a nywhere you need to go with relative ease. Moving to the vineyards area up here in the Hunter Valley is a different s tory. W hile t he l ocal bu s c ompany, Ro ver Coaches, provide a very professional service, if I happened to miss the last bus home in the afternoon, it would mean having to sheepishly ring my wife and plead to be picked up from somewhere.

dinner as they were loaded into the car to pick Dad up f rom Newcastle. About a y ear ago, wh ile in-between jobs, I had been having driving lessons after getting my L’s. But starting work here at the Post restricted the time I could get practice in and in the end, it was my wife who forced the issue.

After a bout 13 y ears of w aiting f or me t o do i t myself, she booked the driving test.

The butterflies were certainly churning when I realised there was no escaping my fate. I’d have to give it my best shot and see how I go. I’m assuming many people who s it this test had the same feelings as me: “How am I possibly going to remember everything I have to do?” and “I’m going to be so nervous and will stuff it up.”

But d uring t he te st, I ac tually f elt qu ite c alm.

Some wise advice from my driving instructor helped immensely: “Just concentrate on t he task you doi ng r ight at t hat moment. That’s t he most important thing. Don’t start thinking about how much longer this is going to take or worrying if you made a mistake on something five minutes ago.

The next day, I decided to jump straight into the deep end and drive to work here at Charlestown - a distance of a bout 45kms. Possibly not t he smartest move given that I had never driven on my own before. But I m ade it without incident and would certainly e ncourage ot hers m y a ge or o lder who have been putting off driving for whatever reason to take the plunge.

A 2 0- year- old m an h as b een c harged with mu rder a fter a fat al st abbing i n Cessnock on Friday night.

Police were called to Cessnock District Hospital shor tly a fter 9 pm, a fter reports 20 - year- old J ack H enderson had presented at the hospital with stab wounds.

Mr Henderson died shortly after.

A br awl t hen bro ke ou t i n t he c ar park outside the hospital with another 20- year- old m an w as f ound t o b e suffering a m inor s tab w ound t o h is arm. He received treatment for the nonlife threatening injury.

An i nvestigation w as c ommenced, and a c rime s cene w as e stablished a t the hospital and a f urther crime scene was located on John Street, Cessnock.

Both scenes were examined by specialist f orensic of ficers. A t hird 20-year-old man, Jack Vincent Colless, was arrested at an address in Cessnock.

He w as t aken t o M aitland Po lice Station and was charged w ith murder, carry cu tting w eapon a pprehension and reckless wounding.

Mr C olless w as re fused b ail a nd appeared a t M aitland Lo cal C ourt o n Saturday, whe re he w as a gain re fused bail to appear at Cessnock Local Court today (Wednesday).

It is believed Mr Henderson and Mr Colless were known to each other a nd had attended Cessnock High School together.

Maitland M P, Roby n P arker a nd Upp er Hunter MP, George Souris both lost their portfolios in the shake-up last week, leaving no Hunter MPs in the ministry.

Labor c andidate f or M aitland, J enny Aitchison l abelled t he new C abinet a nd the app ointment of M s B erejiklian a s Minister for the Hunter a “disgrace”.

“It’s a sl ap i n t he f ace f or t he p eople of the H unter t o h ave s omeone who h as no u nderstanding of t heir l ocal i ssues purporting to represent them in Cabinet,” she s aid. “ Particularly t he c hoice of Berejiklian, who, as Transport Minister, contributed t o th e tr uncation o f th e lin e in N ewcastle, w hich w ill h ave m ajor economic a nd s ocial i mpact on p eople throughout the whole of the.”

Member for Paterson, Bob Baldwin, is calling for ideas on environmental projects in the electorate.

The p rojects w ill s upplement th e soon to be launched Green Army, which aims to be the largest-ever team supporting environmental work across the country.

It is expected to have 15,000 young Australians participating by 2018.

Maitland’s libraries are joining a state-wide campaign for increased funding that is, [a] 50/50 [split],” Ms Morton said.

“This has not b een the case and Council has c ontinued t o c arry t he i ncreasing financial burden.”

Despite t his, t he c ity’s l ibraries’ popularity has grown, with loans increasing 21 per cent in the last five years and membership up from 34 per cent of Maitland’s population to 47 per cent over the same period.

Ms Morton said that while Council is not y et c utting b ack s ervices, t he L ibrary budget remains vulnerable.

“There has in fact been a slight increase in staffing levels ove r t he l ast f ive ye ars, t he cost of which has been borne by Council.

“Council will continue to carry the burden of t he shor tfall ho wever a s w ith ev ery other service provided by C ouncil funding will b e s ubject t o c ompeting c ommunity priorities and available funding.”

Council w ill s oon m ake repre sentations to Maitland MP Robyn Parker for support, while a p etition f or i ncreased f unding i s available for residents to sign at the library.

unding t o M aitland’s li braries could be cut with Council carrying the burden of a S tate Government shortfall.

The revelation came as Council last week pledged t heir s upport f or t he NS W P ublic Library A ssociations c ampaign t hat c alls for increased State funding to local government for public libraries.

Since 1980 the State contribution towards the op erating c osts of publ ic l ibraries has d ropped o ver 1 5 p er c ent, w ith on ly just under $25 m illion of t he close to $350 million spent a nnually contributed by t he State in 2011-12, or 7.6 per cent.

For M aitland, t his me ans t hat C ouncil’s funding to t he city’s four library branches - Maitland, East Maitland, Rutherford and Thornton - as a proportion of the Council’s library bu dget i ncreased by 1. 56 p er c ent in the four years to 2012-13, with Council subsidising the service by 87 per cent.

Council’s M anager C ommunity a nd Recreation Services Lynn Morton said that the f unding a rrangement w as not i n l ine with the Library Act 1939.

“The intent of the Library Act of 1939 was for equal funding from the State and Local Government t o de liver a l ibrary s ervice,

Ms Parker said that the closure was not a G overnment de cision, bu t one made by the Chief Justice, and that she had m ade repre sentations t o t he new Attorney-General, Brad Hazzard.

“I’ve written to the Attorney-General and I sp oke to him [last Thursday] and asked him what we could do a bout it,” Ms Parker said.

“His understanding on day one of the job was there a re other things moving into the courthouse, like the NCAT.” Ms A itchison s aid a L abor G overnment w ould l ook a t re opening t he courthouse.

“Of course we will look at it, in terms of reopening it, it’s a year to go and we have to look at where it is up to when we get there,” she said.

“Labor recognises the importance of keeping e mployment o pportunities in M aitland a nd not s ending t hem t o either inner city Newcastle or Sydney.”

Ms P arker, h owever, q uestioned Labor’s committment to reopening the courthouse.

“I n otice th e o pposition di dn’t s ay they would change it if they were in Government,” she said.

“They do want to be the alternative Government and the alternative Minister s o, w ill th ey ch ange i t? W ill th ey bring it back in March next year if they are successful?

“They’re not saying that.”

Pirates set to invade Maitland Gilbert and Sullivan classic to celebrate 50 years for local musical society

t is the very model of a mo dern major musical a nd i n c elebration of t heir 50th anniversary, the Maitland Gilbert and Su llivan a nd Musical S ociety a re next month staging The Pirates of Penzance.

The s washbuckling c omedy w as t he society’s first show when it was formed in 1964 and has been performed several times over the years, with many cast members returning for repeat seasons.

“It’s very p opular, a nd t hese d ays it’s a ll about t he b ox of fice,” D irector J eanette Massey said.

“It’s lovely that most of our principals are e xperienced G a nd S p eople, bu t a lso a really big c hallenge a s we’ve got a l ot of debutantes.”

Ms M assey s aid she w as prou d of t he society’s 50 years of operation.

“It’s a re ally big deal for amateur theatre in Maitland because it’s very hard to make ends meet,” she said.

“This i s wh at we do f or a hob by a nd it’s amazing to think that we’re still standing.”

Last w eek C ouncil adopte d new p olicies for debt recovery, hardship a nd pensioner concessions w ith C r Bl ackmore i terating that the Council wants to help. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s difficult for some to people to admit they have problem,â&#x20AC;? Cr Blackmore said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Any i ssues] w ill b e t reated w ith t he strictest confidentiality.â&#x20AC;?

The new p olicies w ere d rafted a head of the potential seven-year rate rise, which is currently in the hands on the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal.

The p olicies do not re duce t he do llar amount for t hose who a re s truggling, bu t allow f or p ayment pl ans or p ayment d ate extensions f or t hose who e xplain t heir difficulties to a panel made up of Council staff.

Cr Blackmore said that if organised arrangements d o n ot ea se t he si tuation, residents need to return to Council to work out an alternative.

Assistance is available for residents struggling with rate payments â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you have difficulty under the arrangement please keep coming and talking to Council officers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one likes a debt collector knocking on their door, but there is a system we have to work with.â&#x20AC;?

The role of M inister is a v ery d ifficult a nd t ime consuming task, involving a great deal of travel to Sydney and other parts of the state each week for cabinet meetings.

I c ommend Roby n f or t he de dication a nd p assion she h as shown to the community and look forward to welcoming her back to Maitland full time.

I also want to take the time to commend the efforts of local volunteers who h ave b een working t irelessly to r id Maitland of graffiti.

Graffiti vandalism is a problem across New South Wales and costs local communities millions of dollars each year.

The Rot ary c lubs of b oth Rutherford-Telarah a nd M aitland Sunrise have been working in partnership with Maitland City Council o ver t he p ast t wo y ears t o c ombat t his d isgusting behaviour.

I w as ple ased t o s ee C ouncil e ndorse a re quest f rom t he Rotary Club of East Maitland to assist them in establishing a Graffiti Project in East Maitland as well as provide additional funds t o t he Rot ary C lub of Ru therford-Telarah s o t hey c an continue to their great work.

Everybody wants the latest secret to good health, and there are plen ty of people sa ying they ha ve i t to sell y ou some gimmick equipment, book or online plan. Save your time and money, there is no secret!

Exercise regularly, ea t w ell and rest. F ollowing such basic rules can cut heart disease risk by 80 per cent, diabetes risk by 90 per cent and cancer risk by at least 50 per cent.

Wear a pedometer, aim for at least 30 minutes of brisk walking and a total of 10 ,000 steps per da y. Don’t forget strength training for y our upper and lo wer body . T oo man y people neglect resistance e xercise, partic ularly w omen for whom it’s crucial for preventing muscle and bone loss w ith age. Lift weights for at least 20 minutes, two to three times per week.

Eat at least two fish meals per w eek. The evidence is strong that the oils in dark er types of fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and herring, are beneficial for the heart and brain.

Drink plenty of good water. No matter where you are, water should alwa ys be the first thin g y ou reach for when y ou’re thirsty. W ater tr uly is essen tial. I t’s easy to drink c alories without notic ing: tha t big la tte migh t ha ve nearly as man y calories as a bur ger. And a bot tle of soft drink c an have more sugar than y ou need in w eek. You may feel full but nei ther have given your body much useful nutrition.

Sleep eigh t hours a nigh t. Amon g the man y benefi ts, adequate sleep mak es y ou feel bet ter, dec reases risk for cardiovascular disease and boosts memory.

Keep sugar to a minimum. D ecreasing sugar ac tually increases people’s energy by minimising the highs and lo ws that sweet foods trigger. You will also lose weight!

Consider therapies for chronic problems, such as back pain or a headache. Seeing a good massage therapist for neck strain may work better than takin g extra strength pain killers, and it’s a whole lot better for your body.

Don’t foc us on dietin g. Focus on ea ting. If y ou’re hun gry, you’re more lik ely to o vereat, espec ially in the ev ening. I t’s better to eat enough during the day to avoid hunger pangs.

Crohn’s Disease is a t ype of I nflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that can strike anyone of any age (including young children) but is most commonly diagnosed in people between the ages of 15 and 30.

IBD i s n ot c aused b y an al lergic r eaction t o p articular f oods, although certain foods may t rigger or w orsen t he symptoms of IBD. Unfortunately the cause of I BD is not f ully understood yet, although it may be possible that there is a genetic link.

It is a lso k nown that smoking can make a p erson’s symptoms more severe and less responsive to treatment.

Crohn’s D isease re sults i n p atches of i nflammation a long t he walls of t he i ntestine. T his c an c ause t he i ntestines to n arrows in places, obstructing the passage of d igested food; it can cause cracks and tears in the intestinal wall, especially near the anus; and it can change the way nutrients are absorbed by the intestine, putting the person with Crohn’s Disease at risk of malnutrition.

The s ymptoms of C rohn’s D isease c an v ary f rom p erson t o person, bu t m ay i nclude p ainful a bdominal c ramps, re gular episodes of d iarrhoea a nd a n u rgency to use t he toilet, fever i n response to the inflammation, bleeding from the bowel, weight loss and tiredness. A person with Crohn’s Disease can go through a cycle of active disease and periods of remission when they may experience no symptoms and generally feel well.

There is currently no cure for Crohn’s Disease or other types of IBD, but t here a re s ome g ood t reatments a nd me dications t hat can help to control the inflammation and progress of the disease.

In s ome c ircumstances i t m ay b e ne cessary f or a s urgeon t o remove t he d iseased s ections of b owel bu t u nfortunately t his does not ne cessarily s top t he d isease f rom re curring i n ot her parts of the bowel. It is important for anyone with Crohn’s Disease or ot her f orms of I BD t o v isit t heir do ctor re gularly, e specially when t heir d isease i s ac tive, to mon itor t heir s ymptoms, nutrition, response to treatment and to prevent or treat any additional complications t hat m ay a rise. All primary schools in Australia are able to register for the free online tool at www. afcasiancup.com/education The program uses AFC Asian Cup themes as a teaching aid in English, mathematics, art an d h ealth an d p hysical e ducation for c hildren i n y ears 3- 6 a nd i s f ully supported by t he e ducation dep artments in A sian C up ho st s tates - NS W, V ictoria, Queensland a nd t he ACT - a s well a s t he Australian Curr iculum As sessment a nd Reporting Authority.

Australia are in action in the first match of t he t ournament a gainst K uwait i n Melbourne on January 9, with the final to be held in Sydney on January 31.

Keeping the pathways open Focus on junior talent beginning to reap benefits for Knights through High Performance Unit MATT LOGUE

eveloping loc al talen t has alwa ys been of v ital importance to the Newcastle Knights.

From the club ’s inception in 1988 through to the c urrent times, the club tak es great pride out of produc ing their o wn home grown talent and guidin g them to bigg er and better things.

We’ve seen this over the years through a host of names f rom Paul Harrag on, Ma tt Gidley , Danny Buder us through to Andrew J ohns, Billy Peden and Jarrod Mullen.

This foc us on the junior ranks con tinues today through the High P erformance Uni t, a program set up b y coach W ayne B ennett to provide opportunities for top ran ge emerging players to learn their craft.

The HPU program may only be two years old, but the Knigh ts are already benefi ting w ith four SG Ball players stepping up to the H olden Cup (Under 20s) ranks last season.

It’s a success tha t’s also had a f low-on effect to the en tire club in 2014 w ith all three junior teams excelling.

More talented youngsters are expected to progress to the NRL via the High Performance Unit Holden Cup table after eight rounds, while the Harold Ma tthews ( Under 16s ) team recen tly clinched the Club ’s first minor premiership in the age division in over a decade.

The SG B all ( Under 18s ) team are also

performing well having qualified for the finals.

While there’s no doubting the junior ranks are flourishing, this wasn’t always the case prior to the introduction of the HPU program.

And the stats don’t lie.

In the six y ears of the N YC competition, the Knights have produced just five NRL players.

They ha ve also only had tw o pla yers mak e the NYC Team of the Year.

Something had to chan ge and i t’s wh y the HPU program was implemen ted to help develop local players with a national focus.

Program coach Troy Pezet has no doubts the entire New castle club w ill benefi t f rom their continued focus on the junior ranks.

“When Wayne c ame here, he sa w the need for a bit of a change in regards to what we were doing with our junior rep program,” he says.

“Everywhere he has been startin g a t the Broncos he had a lot of success turnin g loc al juniors in to first graders and lik ewise a t the Dragons.

“So he noticed tha t we weren’t going to turn 25 players out of Harold Matthews and SG Ball into NRL players.

“It’s why we needed to identify the best players in each ag e group to gi ve them extra training in leadership skills and mental challenges.

“That’s not g oing to guaran tee us NRL pla yers, but i t w ill give us a chance to come f rom a wide pool and narrow it down to a group w e see as potential leaders.”
