R
esidents of Maitland’s western suburbs will no longer go thirsty, with a ten-megalitre reservoir being officially turned on by Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker, as part of a $137 million spending splash for water services in the region. The $4.5 million reservoir will provide a higher quality water delivery to 23,000 homes in Lochinvar, Rutherford and Aberglasslyn, as well as a further 26 000 properties that are anticipated to be built by 2040. The reservoir funding is a part of $46 million worth of works that have been completed in the region over the last two years, which Ms Parker said is vital if infrastructure is to keep up with Maitland’s growth. “What I’ve found since I’ve been elected is that we’re needing to provide the infrastructure for a growing population,” Ms Parker said. “[Maitland’s west] is a projected growth area and we are planning for that.” Ms Parker also announced on Friday that a further $91 million would be spent over the next four years. This additional funding will pay for upgrades to the Farley and Morpeth wastewater treatment plants and the replacement of aging pipes, including the tunnel that carries water under the Hunter River. “The tunnel is one of Newcastle’s most critical pieces of infrastructure as it transports more than 20 per cent of the Lower

Spare a thought for the men and women in blue
n light of Police Remembrance Day last Friday, I want to use this space to publicly thank every serving officer for their work. Those of us not in the force sometimes whinge and complain about how stressful our jobs can be. When it gets too much we can head out for a coffee to calm down. Police don’t have this option of ‘clocking off’ for a few minutes. It is a generally thankless job and one that is not valued highly enough in terms of salary. I have never understood why we don’t pay police officers significantly more. I have often travelled on trains late at night in the Newcastle and Hunter regions and have seen some of the ridiculous situations police have had to deal with. Two police officers trying to break up a brawl between 20 youths and having the mob turn on them. Passengers so drunk on the train it takes ten minutes to rouse them. Then having to escort them off and act as babysitters until an ambulance arrives. We want to hear your stories of praise for the police. Perhaps it was their kindness and understanding
in the loss of a loved one or friend or their professionalism in dealing with a crime you reported. has displayed in abundance under the master coach. Although Danny Buderus’ career ended in a painful and disappointing manner, it in no way detracts from a wonderful career. I must admit to thinking we had seen the last of Danny in the NRL when he departed for Leeds at the end of 2008, aged 30. But he quickly re-established himself as a key to the Knights’ fortunes and his absence will leave the team short on experience in the hooking role. We now turn our attention to the Jets in the A-League ahead of the opener against Sydney FC on October 11.

ccording to William Shakespeare ‘all hearts in love use their own tongues’, and that appears to be the case in the Penfold household. Maitland councillors Philip and Nicole Penfold have just celebrated their oneyear anniversary as the city’s first elected husband-wife team, a milestone they say is an important stepping stone in diversifying the council. “We need more of a mixture on the council – ethnicity, age and sex,” Philip said. “Nicole is the youngest on the council at the moment, and in the previous term I was. She’s also one of two women, with Loretta Baker.” Both believe that having a young family helps them bring a new perspective to council decisions, which, contrary to criticism, does not disadvantage Will, 11, or Matt, 5. “The hardest thing is balancing the kids being happy with our duties,” Nicole conceded. “But we’re very fortunate with the flexibility of our jobs, and there are a lot of things you can go to as a family. Philip and I also see more of each other now than when just Philip was a councillor.” As for the idea that they always vote with each other, they both agree that is not the case.

“We do discuss the agenda and issues, and Nicole is often a voice of sanity for me by playing devil’s advocate.

ouncillor Steve Procter calls himself a ‘planned person’, and being elected deputy mayor in his second and final tilt was just what he wanted. Councillor Procter was elected to the position at last week’s council meeting unopposed, taking over from Councillor Brian Burke. Councillors can only serve in the deputy position for one year. This will be Councillor Procter’s second term as deputy mayor in the 14 years he has been on the council, having also held the position in 2002. “I’m much more experienced now,” he said. “I also have the benefit of being truly independent and I have a good relationship with senior council.” Councillor Procter believes this independence is part of what make him a good representative for his community. “I see myself as part of a team, not as an individual. “I think a lot of councillors forget why they’re there – no political aspirations should be in local government.” Councillor Procter told the Post that part of his reason for standing was because this current term would be his last on Council. “I don’t want to hang around. I want to do my bit but move over for someone who is going to come in with fresh legs and ideas.”

But before he moves on, Councillor Procter said there are older goals he would like to achieve, such as an equine centre, a short-term park for caravan stopovers and
the revitalisation of the city centre. “We’ve done the ground work over the last ten years. This term I’d like to see these projects come to fruition.”

Council adopts wait-and-see approach to pool hours Amelia Parrott

ewcastle City Council has resolved to keep Beresfield Swimming Centre operating with restricted hours and season until further notice. Councillors voted seven to six against a motion put forward by Labor councillors Jason Dunn, Nuatali Nelmes, Tim Crakanthorp and Stephanie Posniak to amend the operating hours of the pool for the 2013-2014 season to be consistent with the swimming centres at Mayfield and Wallsend, instead choosing to support a foreshadowed motion from Cr Allan Robinson that the operating hours be reviewed if there is a sufficient increase in patronage over the upcoming season. Cr Dunn labelled the decision as a “kick in the guts” for the Beresfield community. “This only serves to disadvantage an already disadvantage community,” he said. “Most of Ward 4 doesn’t even have footpaths, meanwhile Council is spending almost $4 million on Laman Street and $70,000 recruiting a new general manager.” Wallsend MP, Sonia Hornery, who presented a petition featuring nearly 5000 signatures of concerned Beresfield residents to state parliament last month, was livid about the Council’s decision. “This arrogant attitude by the Council not only reduces the times that Beresfield

ratepayers can go for a swim, but severely restricts crucial learn-to-swim classes,” she said. “The residents of Beresfield have every right to be angry.” Ms Hornery also pointed the finger at Ward 4 Councillors David Compton (Liberal) and Allan Robinson (Independent) for not supporting the Labor motion. “The people of Beresfield need all the support they can get to fight this inequality, and when two councillors in
their own ward don’t stand up for them, that’s really bad form.” Cr Robinson said reviewing patronage after the season was the fairest outcome. “All pools have increased their patronage while Berro has decreased by three per cent,” he explained. “I believe that if patronage sufficiently increases Council should reconsider the operating hours.” The pool will close at 3pm on weekends, two hours earlier than Mayfield and Wallsend, and run a 20week season.

The trust fund has been set up by family friend Ella Graham to assist with Jackie’s rehabilitation, as well as to offer financial security for her younger siblings, Luke and Cherie. She is aiming to raise $50,000. “As a community we are deeply shaken by this news and would like to do all we can,” Ms Graham said on the funding page. “Jackie has always selflessly given; she’s had many volunteer commitments, as well as supporting her family and friends. Two awards are given in each electorate per year. “Mrs McLeod has demonstrated a strong community spirit, dedicating her adult life to supporting and helping others,” Ms Parker said. “She walked into my office and I thought, ‘Wow, this woman is special’. She just blew me away with how much care she showed and how much compassion she had.” Mrs McLeod has fostered four children and adopted one in addition to her own four children, worked in the Salvation Army op-shop and has volunteered at Sunbeams, the Home League, the Salvation Army Sunday School, schools canteens and in school reading
programs. She has been volunteering at Mai-Wel for ten years. Mrs McLeod said that she hopes her award and positive experience with Mai-Wel will encourage more people to volunteer. “It’s a privilege to work with Mai-Wel. They’re just a beautiful group of people.” Minister Ajaka and Ms Parker toured the East Maitland plant to see how e-cycling works. Minister Ajaka said that he was awed with both the plant and the services that Mai-Wel provides to those with a disability. “It’s really quite extraordinary what they do here. I’m so impressed by the range.”

End of school is just the beginning of life’s adventures
W
e are now approaching the end of the year and for many of our young people it signifies the end of thirteen long years of schooling. For them it often seemed like they’d never make it – for their parents they’re left wondering where the time went. In Maitland we have dozens of schools with thousands of students – and each year brings a new load of talent ready to head off to apprenticeships, university, full time jobs or - for some of the luckier ones – the highly sought after ‘gap year’. This particular year group started school near the beginning of the new millennium and represent a new generation where opportunities are abundant. Here at Council we offer a number of traineeships for new graduates – as do many organisations around Maitland and the Hunter. And, of course, we
have the University of Newcastle producing skilled people every day. It is so important that we support the career paths of our young people to ensure skills remain in this area. Here in Maitland we are a growing city with a growing need for people with specialised skills. I, for one, would like to see those positions filled by people who know and love this area. Council is filled with a number of people who have called Maitland – and the Hunter – home for many years. As mayor, I often witness the passion these people have for their home and I think this assists in building a committed and genuine workforce. With final exams now upon our Year 12s I know there must be a lot of stressed kids out there. To them I say – you can only do your best. A wonderful thing about the world we live in today is that there are so many options and you never know which one might just turn into the perfect opportunity.

O
nly three out of every one hundred people will suffer a cardiac arrest in an out-ofhospital setting and live to tell
the tale. Swansea retiree Mervyn Hammond, 84, is one of the lucky ones, and last week was reunited with the paramedics who saved his life, Ashley Cutten and Wayne Hardy. Mr Hammond suffered a cardiac arrest in his home on May 25, in the presence of paramedics Cutten and Hardy, who were able to arrive before things became dire due to Mr Hammond recognising the early warning signs.
“At first I just thought my neck was a bit cranky with arthritis. But then I started to get this pain in the chest and it increased and I said to my friend Julie, ‘You’d better ring Triple Zero for me’,” Mr Hammond said. Paramedic Cutten said that it was extremely rare for someone to survive, estimating that in his 13 years as a paramedic, he has only delivered four or five people to the hospital alive. “To have someone like Merv survive is really a one in a million thing. We had a good day after that. That was a win.” Cardiac Arrest symptoms to be aware of include: • Any unusual tightness or pain in the chest • Anxious feeling or fast or slow heart beat • Trouble breathing or frothy spit
Remembering those lost in the line of duty
ast Friday I had the honour of being part of the marching contingent at the National Police Remembrance commemoration service at All Saints Cathedral in Newcastle. This event is held annually to commemorate and honour officers who have lost their lives undertaking duties as a police officer. It is also a time to remember officers who have lost their lives to illness or other circumstances. To march behind a pipe band in remembrance of your colleagues is a moving experience. When the seventh beat of the base drum sounds you step off with pride, knowing that all police who have served before you at some time would have done the same thing. The service paid tribute to the 252 NSW Police officers who have died in the line of duty since 1862, when the NSW Police Force came into being. Special mention was made of Detective Inspector Bryson Anderson, VA, who was killed performing duties in the last twelve months. As the remembrance day is also for police from the whole of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, Constable Blain of Queensland and Probationary Opa of Papua New Guinea where also commemorated. Also remembered during the service

was the contribution of police who had died due to medical and other reasons. There were a number of family members of these officers present and I hope they gained some solace in the high esteem that their loved ones are held. The National Police Remembrance Day will be held again next year. The official day will again be on September 29, the feast day of police’s patron saint, St Michael.

he Shannons 2013 Mattara Hillclimb is on the bucket list for keen hillclimbers and so it has been so for over 5o years. Few things compare with a quick run along Shortland Esplanade, through the twists and turns of beautiful King Edward Park. It’s a fitting Grand Final event for the NSW Championship. Our thanks to Newcastle’s MG Car Club and the good people of Newcastle for the chance to “thread the needle” through the pinch in search of a fast time. Here is a quick form guide to the top contenders for outright Fastest Time of the Day and drivers to watch in the smaller classes. This year’s championship (which takes in venues all around the state) has been a tight contest between current national champion Tim Edmondson in the hi-tech British built Gould V8 and current state champion, Mudgee’s Doug Barry in the V6 Buick powered Lola F300. So far Tim has managed to have the upper hand but Doug loves the challenge of this course and nobody tries harder. Currently lying third in the championship is veteran competitor Ron Hay. His latest mount is a technically fascinating car which marries an Italian Dallara Formula 3 chassis to a NZ built (largely motorcycle based) 2.4 litre V8. Beautifully made and works a treat. Ron will be eyeing up an outright win while looking over his shoulder for the sight of ex Formula1 designer Malcolm Oastler who is now back in Oz and living in southern NSW. Malcolm’s weapon of choice is another Dallara chassis, this one powered by a Suzuki Hayabusa motor cycle engine and as you would expect it is a work of art. Malcolm registered a strong third place at his last start and the smart money could be on him to come up trumps. Lying fifth on points is Phil Heafey in his trusty Mitsubishi Evo . A sedan an outright contender I hear you say? Yes indeed and if the conditions are not ideal Phil will make good use of the power and traction of his AWD machine to spring a surprise on the more favoured open wheelers. A couple of local drivers worth watching include Maitland driver

in his self-built BBB Clubman sports is setting quite a standard in driving as well as engineering. David Isaacs (Mitsubishi Evo7) and wily Coffs Coast driver Dave Morrow (Krygger Suzuki) should never be overlooked based on their top ten performances this year.

A popular stepping stone: TRI-CHALLENGE
T
he Tri-challenge Championship was started in 2000 by the MG Car Club, Newcastle to help MG Car Club, Newcastle, Kempsey Sporting Car Club and Tamworth Sporting Car Club to each stage an event, part of a series, that would attract many more competitors than they would otherwise have had. It would have the added benefit of giving Club competitors a bit of travel, different tracks, more competition and , with only four events, a step up from local events but not a State Championship. The Series has been very successful over the years with some drivers using it as a stepping stone to greater things and some happy to compete each year. The first event on 7th March at Mt. Cooperabung, Kempsey, was won by local driver, Darren Read (Mineti) followed by three more Kempsey drivers,
Dave Morrow (Krygger), Kim von Holt (Gladiator) and Alan Hindes (Piranha). The second round was held at Tamworth’s Oakburn Park Sprint Track and former MGCC local, Ed McCane in his Hi-tech Hayward won, followed by Alan Hindes (Piranha) and Peter Robinson (PRS) from MGCC, Newcastle. Ringwood’s third round near Raymond Terrace was nearly rained out, but a reasonable field attended with Kempsey’s Dave Morrow winning followed by Newcastle driver, Amy Mrcela (Elfin)and Kevin Edwards in his Mitsubishi EVO making good use of its AWD grip taking out 3rd place. With the general downturn in the economy affecting some competitors, numbers were down from a couple of years ago, but again the Series has provided relatively cheap club level racing and a bit of travel. All in all, a win for everybody.

I have it bad, with 3 race Torana replicas - Bond’s HDT ‘75 car, the Brabham/Moss blue Levi jeans car, and Allan Grice’s ‘76 LX hatchback. Add a ‘71 LS Monaro 350, 56 chev pickup and ‘57 chev hardtop and the shed is nearly full, “ nearly”. Yes, it does appear I have a very understanding family who either just shake their heads or say yes he’s in the shed building something. To them “ luv ya and thanks”. rowing up in the sixties and seventies in Australia was a great time to be interested in Motorsport. With heroes like Bond, Brock, Grice and Harvey racing the Fords of Geoghegan, Moffat, French and others. One of my earliest memories is of sitting in front of a black and white tv watching Bathurst, and it’s a yearly event still to this day, not to be interrupted by anyone except say for the delivery of either food or beverage. After school, I completed an apprenticeship with Booths Holden in Mosman which sparked my enthusiasm to compete in Motorsport. Meeting guys like Graham Engel, Damon Beck,Graham Moore and some other guy called Peter Brock put ideas into my head which unfortunately at the time my pocket couldn’t match. 25 years later the cars I loved as a kid are now classics and very collectable. fter twenty years of serving up ironic, often self-effacing and always brilliantly crafted pop, indie, new wave, or whatever genre may take their fancy, no-one could accuse Regurgitator of painting themselves into a sonic corner. Their latest album, the aptly titled ‘Dirty Pop Fantasy’ is no different. Lashings of garage pop-punk, new wave, and even the odd nod to the 80s power ballad and softer acoustic numbers, all melded into a surprisingly cohesive whole, show that this is one band that, after eight albums, is still excited at the prospect of where they can take their music. Bass player and vocalist Ben Ely told TE said that it was a conscious decision to traverse as many genres as possible on ‘Dirty Pop Fantasy’ and thus more time was spent in the writing process. “I think the last album [‘SuperHappy FunTimesFreinds’] was pretty much done in around two weeks, so yeah, the approach this time around was a little different,” he laughed. “We spent about six months writing the album because we wanted to make each song really strong in its own genre – we wanted them to be able to stand on

their own but work as an album as well.” Regugitator have always been a band that, despite putting time in on major labels, have existed slightly outside of the mainstream and never quite willing to tow the company line. Ely said the fact that the band had been able to exist for so long, despite their ‘upstartedness’, and now be labelled elder statesmen on indie rock, was a point of pride. “That whole elder statesmen thing is quite nice, I guess. It is quite a compliment to have these young electro-pop punk kinds coming up to you and telling you how you’ve influenced their band.” Since they hit the stratosphere with their genre-defining debut album ‘Tu-Plang’, Regurgitator have owned pretty much every stage they’ve played on – a fact anyone who caught their blistering set at this year’s ‘Groovin’ The Moo’ set in Maitland can attest. However, this current tour will be the last for the ‘Gurge for sometime with the band going on an indefinite hiatus for family reasons. “Yeah, Quaan [Yeomans, vocalist/ guitarist] is expecting his first baby next year so we will be taking a fair bit of time out from the band which, I guess is even more reason to come check us out this time,” he said. Catch Regurgitator when they play at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, October 5.

fter sending both pundits and punters into a lather with their subtle and lilting sophomore album ‘Earnest’, Melbournebased The Stillsons could very well have gone one better with their latest release ‘Never Gonna Go Your Way’. While the album still bristles with the nuanced folk-tinged pop that made ‘Earnest’ such a hyperbole generator , there is a much more urgent feel to proceedings this time around – as evidenced on the album’s “beefier” tracks such as ‘‘Feel So Young’. Canteri told TE that the band were over the moon with the way the album had been received since its release. “Yeah, it’s been really nice – we weren’t really sure what to expect but the response has been really positive. “We ran a pozible campaign to finish off the manufacturing side of things and
we gave some pre-release copies to pledgers and their response has been quite overwhelming.” Given the wrap ‘Earnest ’received around the traps – ABC Australia, DIG, Gold Coast, Bendigo, Radio Adelaide album of the week) Canteri said the main focus during the recording was not to dwell too much on how the album might be received. “With ‘Earnest’, we really weren’t expecting anything so we were obviously very humbled,”” she said. “But, for me, it was all about not expecting the next one to be the same. I really didn’t want to dwell on what people might think and concentrate more on the arrangements and stuff, so while that might have been in the back of our minds, for us it was more about servicing the song.” We had been playing a lot of the songs for quite a while so there was definitely a sense of synchronicity in those sessions”. Hunter since 2001, and while the club’s 2013 season ended a week short of the Grand Final, there is little doubt that Bennett has now stamped his mark on a side that is destined for greater things next season. In short, he has answered his critics in emphatic fashion. After missing the finals in 2012 - his first year in charge of the Knights - Bennett was questioned left, right and centre about whether he had the hunger, passion or ability to turn things around for a club so desperate to again sit atop of the rugby league world. In 2013, he proved why champions should never be written off - taking a side older than most through the arduous highs and lows of the
NRL season, and all the way to the Preliminary Final against the Roosters last weekend. And he did it in typical Bennett fashion playing his cards close to his chest, flying under the radar and, not surprisingly, saying very little along the way. While Bennett’s dream of an eighth title disappeared when inspirational skipper Danny Buderus was stretchered off Allianz Stadium last weekend, he ends the season knowing that 2014 holds plenty of promise and believing that 2013 should be considered a success. “Overall I am really pleased,” Bennett said. “I know how disappointed I was last year, so to finish in the top four is a start for us and hopefully it gives confidence and more belief when we start the season next year.” The fans clearly believe, too - the chant and passion coming from the stands even when the result was obvious last Saturday night was deafening, and an inspiration. Perhaps it is that pain that will drive the Knights during the pre-season ahead. Newcastle’s two premierships have been built on courage and determination - and defying the odds. There’s a feeling emerging in Newcastle that what happened in 2013 is only the entree for what will be a stellar main course in 2014. The age of the squad, the betting odds and predictions of the experts will again dominate the pre-season. But when there’s a champion like Wayne Bennett at the helm, it is very difficult to shake the fact that something special is building in this sports-mad town.
