R

esidents of Maitland’s western suburbs will no longer go thirsty, with a ten-megalitre reservoir being officially turned on by Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker, as part of a $137 million spending splash for water services in the region. The $4.5 million reservoir will provide a higher quality water delivery to 23,000 homes in Lochinvar, Rutherford and Aberglasslyn, as well as a further 26 000 properties that are anticipated to be built by 2040. The reservoir funding is a part of $46 million worth of works that have been completed in the region over the last two years, which Ms Parker said is vital if infrastructure is to keep up with Maitland’s growth. “What I’ve found since I’ve been elected is that we’re needing to provide the infrastructure for a growing population,” Ms Parker said. “[Maitland’s west] is a projected growth area and we are planning for that.” Ms Parker also announced on Friday that a further $91 million would be spent over the next four years. This additional funding will pay for upgrades to the Farley and Morpeth wastewater treatment plants and the replacement of aging pipes, including the tunnel that carries water under the Hunter River. “The tunnel is one of Newcastle’s most critical pieces of infrastructure as it transports more than 20 per cent of the Lower
