ewly reinstated Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, has appointed Hunter MP, Joel Fitzgibbon, as Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in his new-look cabinet. Mr Rudd announced the new ministry whilst visiting the region to launch the National Disability Insurance Scheme, DisabilityCare Australia, on Monday. Mr Rudd believed the Australian public would be willing to give Mr Fitzgibbon a second chance after he was forced to resign as Minister for Defence in 2009 amidst repeated controversies. “I think four years in Coventry, which effectively is what Joel has done, has given him plenty of time to reflect and I believe everybody gets a reasonable opportunity for a second chance,” the PM said. “Joel has a passion for the regions and therefore a passion for agriculture...and I think he is a very good fit for the portfolio. “So I just say to people, give Joel a go. He has been four years on the sidelines...I think everyone deserves and second chance.” Mr Fitzgibbon welcomed his appointment to the cabinet and said the portfolio would offer the opportunity to make a difference. “The agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors are critical to Australia’s future economic success and particularly critical to so many regional economies,” he said. “I look forward to working with the many stakeholders to make this industry stronger and to position

never like to be a party pooper. To rain on anyone’s parade. To be the glass half-empty type. However. I was watching our latest PM Kevin Rudd’s press conference in Newcastle on Monday morning with the feeling that it was all being conducted in some kind of alternate reality. Before you suggest that I might be due for a holiday, let me explain. As the PM named his new ministry, which includes a record number of female ministers and first time ministers, I couldn’t help but think that, in all likelihood, these people will only hold their positions for a matter of months, until the election. (Yes, I am obviously working from the premise that the Coalition will win the election; the same premise that Government MPs were working under last week when they brought Rudd back in from the wilderness). To me, there was a sense of futility underpinning it all. Not in the practical sense – I believe there’s certainly a need to appoint ministers as we can’t have education reform, disability care services and the nation’s finances rudderless until an election takes place; but from a big

New initiative sees taxi drivers reaching out to help people at-risk Amelia Parrott

ocal cab company Maitland Taxis is doing its part to offer support to those at risk of suicide and mental illness in the community with a new and innovative scheme being rolled out in cabs across the Hunter. The East Maitland-based company has partnered with the Maitland Region Suicide Prevention Network to introduce new business cards for cab drivers to distribute to passengers. On one side of the cards, passengers can find contact details for the taxi company, on the other side there are ‘handy numbers’ to help customers connect various local and national mental health groups, support networks and emergency services. Steven Schumacher, chairperson of the Maitland Region Suicide Prevention Network, approached the company with the idea of developing the cards after he noticed many organisations had blank space on the back of their business cards. Maitland Taxis chairman of directors, Brendon Young, said the company were immediately supportive of the idea. “It just sounded like a worthy group to help and anything we can do to help some of the things mentioned on the back of the cards will help the community, it will help everybody,” he said. “If we’re running someone from East Maitland to Maitland or wherever, they’ll

elcome to the world of one KRudd. Where he “rocks around the joint” and talks to the “young folk” about “cooking with gas”. Every now and then he tells us “good people of the media” to “chill” before he concludes press conferences saying, “I’ve got to zip.” Get used to these Kevin Rudd-isms. There’s more wild gesticulating and rock star mall walks to come. It can be said that Kevin Rudd’s return to the role as Prime Minister is one of the all time political resurrections. It’s the come back of all come backs, the ultimate revenge. If it was fiction, it would be unbelievable. Here we are, three years later, considering a man for the prime ministership who promises he’s changed. In his first media conference since returning to the role, he was on time and refused to make any announcements without consulting his yet to be formed cabinet. The signs are good. The Gillard Government was shackled by the weight of the carbon tax, and all indications are that a Rudd Government will move to an emissions trading scheme.

an extraordinary first media conference, he came out guns blazing, suggesting Tony Abbott’s “turn back the boats policy” could spark a diplomatic conflict with Indonesia. Big call – and one the Opposition labelled as “outrageous”. Mr Rudd will keep Julia Gillard’s prized National School Improvement Plan, but the term Gonski is, well, Gone-ski. He’s also confirmed that signal parent payments are on the Cabinet agenda. With a straight face he’s also called on the parliament to be “gentler and kinder to each other” when for three years he’s been plotting his revenge and undermining Julia Gillard, and therefore the Labor party, at every turn. For the former Prime Minister, her tenure has been a roller coaster. She is one tough lady and was dignified till the end. Like her or loath her, she faced one of the most difficult political environments in history. A minority government, sabotage from within and a strong element of sexism. Flaws, she has many, but she smashed the glass ceiling and forged a new path for women – and for that, I thank her. As we saw last week, politics is a brutal and unrelenting blood sport.

Mr Park believes that while policing the areas better would counteract the problem, the long term solution is an investment in regional infrastructure. “The closer to Sydney you live, the more transport options you have,” he said. “Regional communities do not have the same options; we have to rely on cars. “We should not be punished for that.”

Vote ‘yes’ to recognise local government

would be stating the obvious to say it has been a huge week in Federal politics. I hope that the events in Canberra do not detract from the Local Government Referendum that is set to take place alongside the Federal election, whenever that may be. Maitland City Council has long supported constitutional recognition for

local government, and a yes vote at this referendum would mean many positive benefits for local communities. It would safeguard the partnership between the Federal Government and local councils by ensuring vital funding for roads and infrastructure can continue to change hands directly – rather than going through the state government. This is not to sever ties between councils and the state, as it is only right the state remain authorised to govern councils in terms of disciplinary action and through legislation in relation to planning and other aspects of local government. Council could also not expect to maintain its current level of service without the financial and other support of the state. Instead, voting yes at the referendum would empower councils to strategically plan for and fund relevant infrastructure projects with direct help from the Federal government. One example of how this may work is the Hunter Expressway. This referendum may be the last chance to safeguard this funding. Vote ‘yes’ to secure a more prosperous future.

The rules around alcohol limits

n the last few weeks there have been a number of motor vehicle collisions in the Central Hunter area where the overriding factor in the crash has been alcohol. As an example, last week Cessnock suffered two such accidents in two days when drivers affected by alcohol collided with other vehicles, both on Wollombi Road. Luckily, no-one was injured, but all concerned were lucky. The law is clear in relation to driving with alcohol. I have been asked a number of times about the different alcohol limits for the different types of licences, so here they are. NSW has three blood alcohol limits: zero BAC, under 0.02 and under 0.05. These numbers refer to a person’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Your BAC is a measure of the amount of alcohol you have in your blood. The measurement is the number of grams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. For example, a BAC of 0.05 means 0.05 grams or 50 milligrams of alcohol in every 100 millilitres of blood. The limit which applies to you is dependent on the category of your licence and the type of vehicle you are driving.

Zero applies to all learner drivers, all Provisional 1 drivers, all Provisional 2 drivers, all visiting drivers holding an overseas or interstate learner, provisional or equivalent licence. Under 0.02 applies to drivers of vehicles of “gross vehicle mass” greater than 13.9 tonnes, drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods and drivers of public vehicles such as taxi or bus drivers. A BAC of 0.02 can be reached after the consumption of only one standard drink (a middy of beer, a nip of spirits or a small glass of wine). This means that drivers subject to a 0.02 limit must not consume any alcohol before driving. Under 0.05 applies to all other licences (including overseas and interstate licence holders) not subject to a 0.02 or zero limit. From the above, it can be seen that it is not hard to exceed the alcohol limit. If you are going to drink, it is essential to plan ahead, use public transport, get a taxi or phone a friend. If you don’t follow this advice, before too long you will not have a licence, be out of pocket because of fines, maybe in gaol or worse still, having caused the death of a innocent person.

Child contracts the fifth case of meningococcal in the region this year

child is in a stable condition in a Hunter area hospital with the fifth confirmed case of meningococcal disease in the Hunter New England Health (HNE) region this year. Close contacts of the child are being prescribed clearance antibiotics, and it appears there are no links between the case and any previous cases, HNE has stated. Public Health Physician Dr Craig Dalton said seeking medical attention quickly may prevent the development of serious complications. “Meningococcal disease may be very severe and the community needs to be on the alert for its symptoms,” he said. “If anyone suspects meningococcal disease, they should seek medical attention immediately,” Dr Dalton said. Up to 10 per cent of patients with invasive meningococcal disease in Australia die as a result of the infection. The first symptoms of meningococcal disease may include pain in the legs, cold hands and feet and abnormal skin colour. Later symptoms may include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, dislike of bright lights, nausea and vomiting, a rash of reddish-purple spots or bruises and drowsiness. Babies with the infection can be irritable, not feed properly and have an abnormal cry. “Meningococcal infection does not spread easily. It is spread by secretions from the nose and throat of a person who is carrying it and close and prolonged contact is needed to pass it on,” Dr Dalton said. “It does not appear to be spread through saliva or by sharing drinks or cigarettes.” He stressed that while meningococcal disease could be serious, in most cases, early detection and treatment resulted in a complete recovery. In 2012, there were nine confirmed cases of meningococcal disease in the Hunter New England Local Health District. There were 15 confirmed cases in 2011, 13 in 2010 and 14 in 2009.

No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected. When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system.

olice are investigating after a man was seriously burned during an incident near Maitland. At about 3.30am on Saturday, June 29, emergency services attended a residence in Bolwarra Heights where they found a 32-yearold man with burns to 80 per cent of his body. The man was transported by rescue helicopter to Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment. He is reported to be in a serious but stable condition. Police established a crime scene at the premises, which is being examined by specialist forensic officers. Early inquiries suggest the man was doused with flammable liquid and set alight by a female intruder in the residence. Police have been told the woman fled on foot following the incident. Investigators would like to speak with a woman who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

f Clinical Nutritionist Fiona Kane was given a dollar for every time she heard the line, “Everything in moderation”, she says she would be a very wealthy woman. Kane says in her line of work, she hears this phrase every day, especially at functions involving food (and often whilst people are tucking into a piece of cake!). Most people are guilty of using this line from time to time, and it’s used to justify our food choices. In Kane’s experience, it means: “I am not prepared to change and what I already do is moderation, so I don’t need to”. It is a way you get to keep doing what you are doing and not have to feel bad about it. For example, that muffin, bag of lollies, chocolate bar, donut or sugary drink you like to have every day is moderation, surely? Think again. “The word ‘everything’ casts a very wide net,” Kane says. “I don’t agree that everything is okay. For example, even moderate sugar consumption can lead to type II diabetes, Alzheimer’s and even cancer. “The dictionary definition of

moderation is ‘the avoidance of excess or extremes’. Who defines what is excessive or extreme?” Kane says a recent study of 28,500 people over 15 years published in Diabetologia found that all it takes is one can of sugar-sweetened soft drink per day to increase people’s risk of type II diabetes by 22 per cent. Many people would not find one can of soft drink a day excessive. While on the subject of soft drinks, it’s a huge furphy that ‘diet’ soft drinks are any better. In fact, they can be worse – the chemicals in diet drinks can have many side-effects, one of which is cravings for more sugar! I suppose it is up to the individual when it comes to eating in moderation. Think hard about what it really means. Are you happy, healthy and full of energy? Or are you struggling with your health, motivation and energy? This will give you a clue as to whether “moderation” is working for you! Ultimately it is your choice. Do you want health in moderation? Or do you want disease in moderation? I personally want health in abundance.

Low down on jeans

wear jeans all year round but in winter, they are my best friend. They go with anything, can be worn in (almost) any occasion and are easy to wear. If you haven’t embraced jeans, then it is about time you start. Here’s the low down: Cuts: There are so many different styles of jeans out there to choose from; the hard part is choosing the right pair for you. The latest trend in jeans is the ‘boyfriend’ style, which features a low crotch and straight legs, designed to be baggy and comfortable. You can get flares, which fan out at the legs; straight leg jeans, which when worn look tight around the thighs and loose at the base; and skinny leg or tube jeans, which are tight all the way down. Choose from high-waisted (bellybutton height), mid-length (just under the belly button), and low-rise (right on the hips) styles. The final factor in styles of jeans is the length – I love cut-off jeans because they can be worn all year round. Fabrics: The most common fabric to find jeans in is denim. This thick, extremely durable fabric is available

in many different colours and washes. Stretch denim is great because it is much more comfortable than the heavy duty type and tends to hug your figure much better; however, it can be hard to hide unwanted lumps and bumps in this style. You can get jean-style pants in other fabrics and also prints. But I would always recommend denim first – it is longer lasting and looks better. Casual Wear: I wear my jeans most often in casual situations because they are easy to dress down. I love to wear my cut-off skinny leg jeans with a t-shirt, sneakers and cardigan for a really casual look, but I think that boyfriend jeans are the best option for the casual, layered look. Formal Wear: If you wear your jeans with a nice top, heels and some funky accessories, you will have the perfect look for a more formal occasion. Try some leather or faux leather jeans for a sleek style. A word of warning, however. Jeans can only be worn to formal occasions or evening events to a point. They are a definite no-no at a business function, wedding or formal occasion. Best check the dress code first!

Fans will get a chance to hear Fanning, Blasko and Evans making sweet music together in the vines, along with main support act, iconic Aussie five-some, The Cruel Sea. Fanning, who is currently enjoying rave review for his latest solo album, ‘Departures’, as well as plenty of airplay, is just as keen as the fans. “I’m really looking forward to Day on the Green…I have been hearing about them for years and am glad to be playing my new songs in such a dignified setting,” he joked.

“And I’m looking forward to a couple of vinos with Bob Evans and Sarah Blasko.” The former Powderfinger frontman will bring his ‘Tea & Sympathy’ and ‘Departures’ albums to the stage, saying he is “delighted” to have Blasko, Evans and The Cruel Sea stand up beside him. oodberry mountain bike rider Graeme Mudd is sitting in 4th place in the RedAss Downhill State series after securing a win

in Round 2. The 20-year-old competed against 28 other riders from NSW and the ACT in Wiseman’s Ferry in the Elite Male category late last month, in what was his first competitive race in almost five months. Mudd missed the first round of the series due to illness and said that he was very pleased with his performance. “I’m happy that I’ve obviously still got it after a bit of a break,” he said. “I’m feeling fit.” Mudd completed the race in just over 2 minutes, over a second clear of his closest rival. He shaved almost five seconds off his seeding time, clocked the day before. “I knew after the seeding run that I had more in me,” Mudd said. “I had a small mistake and wasn’t pedalling too hard so I turned it up for the race run.” Despite only being in his third year on the circuit, this isn’t Mudd’s first taste of success, having recorded two round wins in the same series last year, as well as the Downhill NSW State Championships. He is also a five time junior champion in BMX and mountain bike racing.
