Dismay over plans to build a tourist caravan park at Mount Dee Melissah Comber
M
aitland is one step closer to having a tourist caravan park after Council voted to rezone land that would be needed for the development. Despite community opposition, Council voted 8 to 1 to rezone a parcel of land on Mount Dee Road, Mount Dee, to allow for a caravan park to be permitted as an additional use of the land. Mount Dee is the small area of land next to Telarah, between the New England Highway and Cessnock Road. Several community submissions had been made during the public exhibition period, expressing concerns about potential issues, including flooding, the inability of the surrounding roads to cope with extra traffic and the possibility of the caravan park taking on long term residents. A 145-signature petition was also submitted objecting to the development. Councillor Steve Procter said that a tourist caravan park would be terrific for the city and a boost to the local economy. “It would do really well during festivals, weekends and holiday time,” he said. “Maitland is very central, so people could easily come here and set up for a couple weeks...and visit our pubs and clubs.” However, opponent and resident Diane Bischoff said that Mount Dee was not appropriate for a tourist caravan park.
A green waste bin service for the residents of Maitland will happen “sooner rather than later”, according to Maitland City Council’s David Simm. Mr Simm, Manager Development and Environment, said that there was a possibility that the bin collection could be introduced as soon 2014 or 2015, in response to prompts from Councillor Philip Penfold at last week’s meeting.

Concerned residents Wayne Bischoff, Diane Bischoff, Jacki Cassidy, Marianne Maher and Clem Maher at the proposed site
“Our beef is not with having a caravan park, it’s the site. “Council have been offered a free caravan park [by the developer], but someone always has to pay a price.” Mrs Bischoff said that not only would money need to be spent upgrading the roads to accommodate wider vehicles and improving the drainage and run off to cope with heavy rain, but there
would also be a personal cost to the residents, who she believes will need to install security measures on their properties. However, Mrs Bischoff said what was most disappointing was that Council were not willing to listen to residents. “Council were really pushing for the people of Maitland to have their say on local issues, but when we do speak up they don’t want to
hear us. We wouldn’t have wasted our time [fighting the tourist caravan park] if we didn’t think it was important.” In response to this criticism, Cr Procter said it was the classic ‘not in my backyard’ response. “Everyone wants it, as long as they don’t have to look at it. “I don’t disregard the comments, but we can’t stand in the way of progress.”

hile typing this column on Monday, the news came through that Yothu Yindi frontman, Aboriginal activist and former Australian of the Year, Yunupingu, had passed away from renal failure. He was 56 years of age. There’s an added sadness when you consider this loss in the context of the past fortnight, which has been marred by accusations of racist comments, bullying and thoughtless and cruel remarks made about AFL player Adam Goodes, and the indigenous community more broadly. As the media cycle speeds on and these particular events are yesterday’s news, perhaps Mr Yunupingu’s death will bring the focus back to the very appalling disparity between life expectancies of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in this country. On a different note, we’re all very excited for our colleague, Tricia Morosin, who with her husband Matt welcomed a healthy and happy little boy into the world last Tuesday. While making an appearance a little earlier than what his mum had planned, little Leo Morosin is doing well – and has been the cause of much distraction at the Post offices. Congratulations, Trish and Matt!

He isn’t too thrilled with cats – he doesn’t hurt them, just likes to chase them or get in their face. Green waste service still some time away, officer says Melissah Comber
A
green waste bin service for the residents of Maitland will happen “sooner rather than later”, according to Maitland City Council’s David Simm. Mr Simm, Manager Development and Environment, said that there was a possibility that the bin collection could be introduced as soon 2014 or 2015, in response to prompts from Councillor Philip Penfold at last week’s meeting. However, Mr Simm warned that it would not be as simple as handing out a bin to every resident. “The council will have to make a decision on how that waste is managed,” he said. The green bins, along with an on-call kerbside bulky good collection service, are being considered as waste management options for the city when the Mount Vincent waste facility reaches capacity, which is estimated to be in three years’ time. Cr Penfold said that there were obstacles that needed to be overcome before the green bin service could be introduced. “There’s not so much a difficulty in the provision or collection of bins, but where we will dispose of the green waste,” he said. “We also need to comply with State Government regulations on landfill.” Despite the slow progress, Cr Penfold said the process is a sound one. “It’s given us time to watch how others do it. We can learn from their mistakes.”

air Work Building & Construction (FWBC) will visit the Hunter later this month to audit companies that employ apprentices and trainees in the construction industries. FWBC Acting Director Brian Corney said Fair Work Building Industry Inspectors would focus on making sure young people are being paid the correct wages and entitlements and that subcontracting relationships are legitimate. “FWBC is the standalone regulator of workplace relations laws in Australia’s construction industry,” Mr Corney said. “This education and compliance campaign is intended to proactively ensure that employers of apprentices and trainees in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley have their systems in order and are doing the right thing.” Fair Work Building Industry Inspectors are currently working in Newcastle and will visit the Hunter Valley region from June 17-29. Trainees and apprentices can visit www.knowyourworth.gov.au microsite to read up about wages, entitlements, rights and obligations in the construction industry. For further information, visit the FWBC website at www.fwbc.gov.au or call the seven-day-a-week hotline on 1800 003 338.

Fergusons’s departure signals end of an era

P Martin Ferguson announced last week that he’s quitting politics after two decades. After the hurley-burley of Question Time, the strawberry blond-haired, no-nonsense, oft-abrupt backbencher got to his feet and dropped a bombshell that came as a shock to many. He’d only been furnishing the backbench since March, when the Kevin Rudd supporter relinquished his Resources ministry after another failed leadership coup. On Wednesday, he joked that his retirement speech was “his first and last from the backbench”. A Labor man through and through, he served 17 years in the parliament. He was a minister under Hawke, Keating, Rudd and Gillard. He was never too far from Labor, and spent six years as ACTU
president before joining politics. Mr Ferguson is seen as an economic rationalist, a political pragmatist and a respected minister. His departure from politics perhaps signals the end of an era for Labor. There were tears in the

chamber from the Labor man as he thanked his staff, the department and his family. Martin Ferguson is the epitome of a career politician. His family have no doubt given way to his ambitions. Politicians cop criticism on a daily basis from all sides – the opposition, media and

the public – and much of it is justified and fair. But Martin Ferguson’s departure should cause us to reflect on the often thankless job of our politicians. Long hours away from home and the party is always prioritised first. Public life is tough and whatever the financial reward there’s every chance the most talented could earn at least double if they went corporate. Over the past few months we’ve lamented the disintegration of parliamentary debate. Last week for just a moment, some class was restored. Tony Abbott came close to tears as he gave genuine thanks to a political foe. Julia Gillard put her differences with Ferguson aside and many broke with protocol in the chamber to line up and just give him a hug or shake his hand.

Cessnock nurses hone their skills during simulated trauma injury trials
C
linical instructors from Hunter New England Health’s (HNE) new-look Simulation Centre were at Cessnock Hospital late last month to provide special trauma injury training for local nurses. The day-long session was the second to be held at Cessnock this year and is part of the centre’s outreach training program, which will also visit sites at Singleton and Nelson Bay. HNE Simulation Centre Operations Manager, Cassandra Quigley, said the training uses a realistic, high-tech mannequin and provides an opportunity for medical teams to receive vital simulation training, including dealing with rare events and emergencies, without any risk to patient safety. “It may be a mannequin, but it’s no dummy,” Ms Quigley said. “The mannequin opens and closes his eyes, has pupil reaction and is able to breathe. “Clinicians can take a pulse, do chest compressions, put in a chest drain, do a surgical procedure to clear a blocked airway and monitor blood pressure and heart rhythms – all things they might have to do in a real emergency.” Instructors provide patient history and other vital information, and brief participants on the scenarios they are going to be dealing with. “The outreach program gives local doctors, nurses and medical students in rural areas of the Hunter the opportunity

Dying on stage: Repertory Theatre presents Deathtrap Melissah Comber
W The cast of Deathtrap in rehearsal
THE NEW
hen an actor dies on stage it’s usually because of a terrible performance, but in Maitland Repertory Theatre’s latest offering, death is all a part of the fun. Considering the play is called ‘Deathtrap’ it’s not giving away too much to say that someone does die, but the who and the why is better unspoiled. Deathtrap is a comedy-thriller by Ira Levin which ran for four years on Broadway in the 1980s and was hailed by critics for being fun and captivating. Director Letitia Plume was attracted to the script because of the storyline. “Just when you think you’ve worked it out – it changes,” she said. Steve Ryan plays Sydney Bruhl, a mystery playwright who hasn’t had much success until he is confronted by a former student (Graeme Mills) who has written the perfect play. The cast is rounded off with a nervy wife (Helen Comber), a Dutch psychic (Dimity Eveleens) and an astute lawyer (Ian Robinson). “There’s a real Agatha Christie element to it,” Ms Plume explained. “So even with all of the twists and turns the audience is sure to go home satisfied.” Deathtrap opens on June 12 and runs for three weeks. Tickets are available from the Maitland Visitors Information Centre on 4931 2800 or at www. maitlandreptheatre.org.

MAITLAND MATTERS by Keryl Collard, Maitland City Librarian
Highly successful talk series continues at Library
M
aitland City Library is entering winter on a high, with three fantastic Look Who’s Talking events scheduled for June – and more to come in July. Tonight the Look Who’s Talking Wellbeing program features ‘Bouncing Back: Finding Resilience’, a free session on how to find strength through the darkest times. Retired nurse and Lifeline counsellor for over twenty years, Elaine Taylor, shares some tips on how to learn resilience at East Maitland Library. Next week on June 12, the historic Brough House hosts ‘Bringing Up the Bodies’ by the compelling Dr Patricia Pender and Dr Hugh Craig. On June 20, our Local History series takes us to Maitland Gaol where the first twenty years of life and death at the maximum security prison are looked in eerie detail. The entire Look Who’s Talking program has had a very successful year so far with wonderful speakers such as ‘Tomorrow When
the War Began’ author John Marsden, highly acclaimed and sought after writer Hugh Mackay and controversial columnist Mark Dapin. Still to come this year we have powerful author Caroline Overington on July 17, whose four confronting novels are widely known for taking readers into dark and uncomfortable places. We also have two instalments left to present in our Local Stories series, including ‘Waste Not, Want Not – Tips From the Past’ on July 31 where we welcome some domestic stalwarts to share tips on how to save food and money. Of course, the Look Who’s Talking program is just one of the many experiences on offer through Maitland Library. The school holidays will again feature exciting activities and entertainment for the little ones and we have our regular events such as Storytime and Baby Book Club. For more information people can call into any library branch or phone us on 4933 6952.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE! Skin cancer is deadly serious business GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED NOW!
The most important thing you may do for your health this winter is get your skin checked The sun-smart message is often neglected during the winter. Winter may prove to be the best time for a full skin check. As most people are covered up during the winter months, this minimises sun exposure to skin lesions and moles. This can allow for better dermoscopy viewing (a distinct magnifying light, which allows a doctor to closely examine spots on the skin). Remember to protect your skin this winter by applying 50+ sunscreen to exposed areas of skin. If you notice a spot on the skin that looks different from the others or is changing, bleeding or itchy, it should be examined by a doctor.

Senior Constable Kel Boak, Crime Prevention Officer, Central Hunter Police
Could you identify your property in the event it is stolen?
R
ecently Maitland Police carried out a search warrant on a residence in Woodberry and discovered a cornucopia of goods suspected of being stolen. Watches, jewellery, power tools and many other items were located. Police want to be able to link the property to possible criminal offences as well as return the property to its rightful owners. The problem is finding out who the rightful owner is. This is especially difficult if offences have taken place outside the local area and the goods have been transported in. To assist yourself and us, we are calling on members of the public to keep an inventory of their property. A simple list of the make, model and serial number can make the world of difference if you have your goods stolen. If you can provide this information to police, matching stolen property is a breeze. As an example, let’s take televisions. Unfortunately there are thousands of televisions reported stolen across the State. Just imagine how difficult it would be to match a TV if it is reported as being, “a black one with a screen of
about 100 centimetres”. On the other hand, if a Sony brand Bravia model, with a 105-centimetre screen with serial number X123456 were reported stolen, it would be easy to match. Another area where identification is difficult is jewellery. There are literally millions of rings that could be described as having a gold band with a white stone. To make identification easier it is recommended photographs be taken of jewellery and stored in a safe place. This will not overcome all issues but it will certainly made things easier. The engraving of goods with licence numbers is also a very good practise. Engraving the letters “NSW” then your driver’s license number on property positively links it to you. This system worked effectively a number of months ago when a tradesperson had marked all their tools in this way prior to having them stolen from the rear of their vehicle. A number of weeks later a search warrant was carried out and the tools located. Within days, the property had been returned to its owner and the offender charged with possessing stolen goods.

People sought to support victims of historic forced adoption practices
F
ederal MP Jill Hall is encouraging local people who want to be part of a working group to help support people who have been affected by past forced adoption practices to register their interest. “It has been a long an emotional journey for the thousands of women, children and families affected by forced adoption,” the Shortland MP said. “We need to deliver the best possible support for those impacted by these practices. “Local people can get involved and contribute their ideas and viewpoints with expressions of interest open [now].” The establishment of the Past Forced Adoptions Implementation Working Group follows the National Apology for Forced Adoptions, which took place on March 21 this year. The Government’s response to the recommendations of the Senate Inquiry Report into Former Forced Adoption Policies and Practices formed part of the national apology. The response also includes the establishment of a forum for mothers, fathers, adult adoptees and others who have been affected by the historic practice to provide advice to Government about how best to meet the needs of those affected. The Working Group will be chaired by Adjunct Professor Nahum Mushin. The invitation to submit an Expression of Interest for membership of the Past Forced Adoptions Implementation Working Group is available at www. fahcsia.gov.au. Submissions will close at 5pm on June 10, 2013.

aitland residents could be one step closer to having an on-call kerbside bulky goods collection service after Council voted to call for expressions of interest at last week’s Council meeting. The motion, moved by Councillor Philip Penfold, is one of several options being investigated for waste management in the city after it was found that the current disposal facility at Mount Vincent has approximately three years’ worth of approved space left for use. Cr Penfold said he was proud to have moved the motion. “I have been campaigning for it for some time now, and community has really been calling for it,” he said. “We’ve been able to benefit from learning from the experiences of other Councils.” Cr Penfold said that the cost would still need to be worked out, as well as how it would work with the existing system, but this could not be determined until possible providers of the service came forward. “We’ve started the ball rolling,” Cr Penfold said.

“Watt Street represents the heart of Newcastle,” Jan Ross, Manager of Tourism and Economic Development Services for The City of Newcastle, said. “This exciting project enables us to bring this rich history to life, and showcase the city’s evolution in a highly innovative and engaging way.” The images will be projected onto ten different sites around Watt Street from sunset until 10pm each night, and will evolve over the twelve months of the installation.

Residents are also being encouraged to become involved in the project through personal submissions of their own lineages and Newcastle memories. “These unknown nuggets of history and still to be seen images from the past will keep the project fresh, authentic and engaging – and we can’t wait to learn more about the history of this very significant street,” Ms Ross said. The City Evolutions light festival is set to launch in Newcastle later this month, on June 21.

STAYING HEALTHY

by KATHERINE TWEED
Get moving and help others
W
e all know being healthy involves movement and many people enjoy moving so much they motivate others to get moving, too. If you have ever thought of doing your bit to get kids up and moving, there is a great government website you should check out: www.ausport.gov.au. It’s about a national project that gets kids moving. Around Australia, 150,000 kids have been jumping, throwing, catching, running, dancing, swimming, cycling, climbing, kicking, rowing, skiing and somersaulting thanks to the Active Afterschool Communities program. The Australian Sports Commission’s Active After-school Communities (AASC) program aims to engage traditionally nonactive primary school-aged children by providing free sport and other structured physical activity programs in the afterschool timeslot at over 3,200 schools and out of school hours care services. The AASC program has already trained over 30,000 community coaches who run a huge variety of activity programs across the country. These coaches are students, club coaches, teachers, parents, brothers,
Glowing skin all year round
sisters, retirees, community members, professional athletes and volunteers. If that’s got you thinking, here are some common question potential coaches ask: 1. What will I be doing? Community coaches deliver sport or other structured physical activity sessions to primary school-aged children in the after-school timeslot during the school term. 2. What sort of activities could I deliver? The program is seeking enthusiastic and motivated community coaches who can conduct game-based activity sessions in not only traditional sports such as netball, hockey and rugby league, but also nontraditional activities such as dancing, frisbee and martial arts. 3. Do I need any qualifications or experience? Coaches need to demonstrate sufficient experience within the activity they will be instructing and a desire to have fun helping kids get active. If any of this sounds like something you would enjoy, why not head to www. ausport.gov.au to find out more. You’ll be setting an example for kids right now and in the future. You’ll even get your own exercise, and it’s a whole lot more enjoyable than an hour on a treadmill!
Elisha is a Registered Nurse and Midwife, with years of experience working in emergency departments, general wards, maternity and in the community.
G
oodbye summer skin, it was nice knowing you. Hopefully we can be reunited in a few months but until then, I guess I will have to welcome back my pale winter skin... It’s funny how getting a tan is so unhealthy. I have always thought that people with a tan look healthier, have better looking skin and have a certain ‘glow’ that they carry with them. Maybe a tan is associated with good health because pale skin is often a sign of illness or perhaps it is just because everyone feels better when the sun is out? Either way, despite the obvious risks of skin cancer and early aging that comes with a tan, there is nothing nicer than having that summer glow. If only there was a way to have a healthy summer glow, risk free, all year round – Oh wait! There is! Time to thank the beauty gods (or a man in a lab-coat somewhere) for inventing the fake tan for giving us beautiful, healthy looking skin, without sun damage, all year round. We no longer have to venture to a salon or a beautician; we can apply a fake tan (and a good one at that) at our own homes,
at hardly any cost. There are three main types of fake tan that you can try at home; the instant tan, the gradual tan and the tanning moisturiser. Instant tans can come as a lotion, a mousse or a spray and are very easy to apply. For a streak-free tan I always use a mousse, and my favourite is Le Tan Fast Tan instant foaming mousse – it is easy to apply, natural looking and isn’t sticky at all. Gradual tans come as gels or lotions and generally develop in around four hours – a lot quicker than a real tan and great if you are getting ready to go on a night out. Tanning moisturisers do not give you as much colour as the other fake tans. I find that my Le Tan Daily Glow works best in the in-between seasons or in between fake tans to give the colour a little extra ‘oomph’. You may think that using a fake tan is just as unhealthy as a real tan, but most use the same chemicals as your everyday makeup. There are organic products out there, but they do tend to come at a higher cost than the other brands. I am determined to have a healthy glow this winter and with my fake tans, it looks like I will! Stay tuned.

The focus is on partnerships and relationships, therefore you need to take on board the fact that you won’t have everything on your own terms. There’s absolutely no point in digging your heels in if you have a difference of opinion with others, as this will only make things more difficult. You’ll stand a much better chance of things going your way if you’re willing to listen to what others have to say and try to accommodate some of their wishes.

You need to draw on your intuition and instincts rather than try and work things out rationally. You may also feel like spending more time alone, especially if you have a relationship issue to work out or your energy levels are low and need recharging. Use this quiet time to find out more about yourself and any hidden agendas or motivations that you might have. Walks by the sea, listening to music and any kind of therapeutic activity will uplift you.

Weekend washout
hat a disappointing day Sunday proved to be with the weather actually being the winner and all 3 games due to be played being washed out. In the game that did get played on Saturday, what a great old-fashioned local derby it was! Cessnock and Kurri always save something for each other, and this clash was no different. Kurri were without their captain-coach George Ndaira and took their time to get going. By the time they did, Cessnock had scored three tries to lead 14-0. However, Kurri worked their way right back into it to draw level at 14 -14 with over 10 minutes remaining. Both sides had their chances until Joel Brown surprised with a deft field goal from dummy half with two minutes to go. Cessnock won 15-14. This weekend sees all four games of the Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League being played on Saturday at 3pm. At Lakeside Sporting Complex, Port Stephens Sharks will be looking to continue Central Newcastle’s form slide of recent weeks. At Maitland Sports Ground, Kurri Kurri will travel across the Valley for their second derby in a fortnight. At Cessnock Sports Ground,
an improving Goannas side will play host to a South Newcastle side looking to bounce back from consecutive losses. Finally, in what is being heralded as the game of the season to date, Noel Dent’s Macquarie Scorpions will be looking to show they are indeed the real deal in 2013 when they take on Western Suburbs. This will be the game on live stream this week – tune in to Fordo and Butts’ call of all the action from 2.45pm on Saturday. With the Under 18s Championships being played this weekend, there will be no Under 18 fixtures this week. Just an update on the Sharp Cup for 2013. This is a home and away competition with Wests having been the holders going in to 2013. They defended it twice early in the season at Harker Oval against Cessnock and Port Stephens before losing the Cup to Central Newcastle in Round 5. Central then went home and lost the Cup to the Macquarie Scorpions in Round 6, and retained the Cup against Kurri in round 7. The Cup is a great concept that keeps all Clubs involved throughout the season as you can only win the Cup by beating the holders on their turf and indeed can only lose the Cup at your home ground.

The British are coming! Hunter readies for an epic showdown between old rivals
R
ugby union is set to be thrown into the spotlight over the next month with the British and Irish Lions in Australia for three Test matches against the Wallabies as well as games against the Australian Super Rugby franchises. The touring squad is also set to visit the Hunter for a game against a combined NSW and QLD Country side at Newcastle’s Hunter Stadium on Tuesday, June 11. Locals will most likely remember the 1989 visit by the Lions, when they played a NSW Country side. That year was the first time the Lions made a full tour of Australia – and a brutal tour it was. Australia won the first Test, but lost the latter two in the most dramatic of circumstances. For those still hurting from that series loss, 2013 provides the chance for revenge. The tour begins with the Western Force taking on the British and Irish Lions at Patersons Stadium in Penrith on Wednesday, June 5. The first Test is on Saturday,
