he Federal seat of Hunter is now marginal, after one of the biggest swings in the country returned Labor candidate Joel Fitzgibbon to the post by just the narrowest of margins. Previously considered to be a safe seat, Saturday’s election saw a swing of 9.57 per cent against Labor at the time of printing. The votes also swung against Greens candidate John Brown and the Christian Democratic Party’s Richard Stretton. 7.78 per cent of the total swing went to Jennifer Stefanac of the Palmer United Party, while Nationals candidate Michael Johnsen picked up 4.08 per cent. In the two party preferred vote, Mr Johnsen gained 8.59 per cent, with only 6,000 votes separating him and Mr Fitzgibbon. Mr Johnsen said that he was pleased with the overall result. “To have achieved a 9 per cent swing is an incredible achievement,” he said on Sunday. “That achievement in itself is worth the battle.” Although the campaign is over, the war of words has not subsided, with Mr Johnsen saying the Mr Fitzgibbon is now on notice, and Mr Fitzgibbon putting the anti-Labor swing down partially to Mr Johnsen’s ‘dishonest’ campaign. “[Mr Johnsen] ran an expensive scare campaign against me, and it worked,” Mr Fitzgibbon said

“They spread untrue messages, but I’m pleased he wasn’t rewarded for it.” Mr Johnsen said that he hopes Mr Fitzgibbon will pick up his game now that he knows people are watching. For now, Mr Fitzgibbon said his job will be to earn back the trust and confidence of his electorate by fighting
for funds that had been promised by the former Labor Government, including the $7 million for Maitland’s Levee project. “Currently a big dark cloud hangs over Hunter projects, and I will be petitioning for the funding commitments to be filled.”

o, we have a new Prime Minister. Again. While it may seem that every man and his dog (including the Abbott family dog, Maisie, pictured) was baying for Labor blood, the result of Saturday’s poll isn’t as straightforward as some like to think. Don’t get me wrong – the Coalition has been given a strong mandate, with the majority of Australian voters choosing change and with it, a conservative government. But that doesn’t mean that everyone is happy. In fact, there are a lot of people who are genuinely dismayed by the prospect of Tony Abbott leading this country and what it will mean for a range of issues including education funding, climate policy and the advancement of marriage equality. Mr Abbott was quick to address this divide in his victory speech on Saturday evening, and again on Sunday. Actually, we saw him first float the idea of being a “leader for all”, rather than the leader of a “tribe” on the Friday before the election, as he laid the groundwork for what will be a recurring theme of his Prime

up of some truly strange fringe party representatives, are going to be Tony Abbott’s two biggest problems. Having said that, I think he will prove to be a surprisingly competent PM. We had such high expectations of Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, and look how that turned out. People’s expectations of Abbott are modest, and that’s a much easier target to continually exceed. Australian politics benefits from having two strong major parties who take it in turns to lead the country and implement their reforms with scrutiny from the other side, the smaller parties and independents. I look forward to watching Labor rebuild over the next three years – I think we’ll see a strong alternative government, perhaps not in this term, but certainly in the near future. And that, just a like a Coalition victory over the weekend, is what this country needs. Like one KRudd, I too must zip. This is my final edition as editor of the Post and I am handing the reins over to our new editor, Paul Monforte, who will grace this page from next week. Thank you for your support. I wish you all the best.

Prime Minister-elect Abbott says he will govern for all
F
resh from a resounding victory, Prime Minister-elect, Tony Abbott, will be in Canberra this week to hold his first party room meeting and to finalise his frontbench line-up, ahead of being sworn in as Australia’s new Prime Minister early next week. While moving quickly to assure the electorate he would “govern for all Australians”, Mr Abbott was clear to outline his policy priorities speaking to the media for the first time since the result on Sunday. “Obviously, a very early item of business is scrapping the carbon tax,” Mr Abbott said. “There’s border security, there’s economic security and the people expect, quite rightly, that the incoming government will build a strong and prosperous economy for a safe and secure Australia.” Despite securing a strong mandate, the Coalition face an uphill battle passing its program of legislation, from the middle of next year, as the new Senate, which could have as many as 18 senators from the minor political parties, reconvenes. At the time of going to print, the Coalition held 85 seats in the House of Representatives to Labor’s 54, with a number of seats still to be decided. The Greens held 1 seat, and 2 seats were

The sun-smart message is often neglected during the winter. Winter may prove to be the best time for a full skin check. As most people are covered up during the winter months, this minimises sun exposure to skin lesions and moles. This can allow for better dermoscopy viewing (a distinct magnifying light, which allows a doctor to closely examine spots on the skin). Remember to protect your skin this winter by applying 50+ sunscreen to exposed areas of skin. If you notice a spot on the skin that looks different from the others or is changing, bleeding or itchy, it should be examined by a doctor.

iberal’s Bob Baldwin has held onto the seat of Paterson and will now enter his fifth consecutive term as the local member. It was a comfortable and predicted win for Mr Baldwin, who defeated Labor candidate Bay Marshall by approximately 18,000 votes, or 23 per cent of the first preference votes. The two party preferred vote, however, benefited Mr Marshall, reducing the margin to 15,000, or 19 per cent of the vote. In a trend that followed the rest the country, Paterson saw a massive swing against the Labor Party (8.33 per cent at the time of printing, with 81.22 per cent of the vote counted), with each of the other candidates gaining votes. The biggest swing was toward Jayson Packett of the Palmer United Party, who picked up 6.24 per cent of the vote; however Greens candidate, John Brown, also saw a .51 per cent swing, bringing his total percentage of the vote to 6.5 per cent. This will be Mr Baldwin’s sixth term in Parliament, having held the position from 1996-1998, and again since 2001.

Tip voucher uproar Council urged to ease restrictions on waste system Melissah Comber
N
orth ward councillor Philip Penfold is calling for equity in Maitland City Council’s tip voucher system following complaints from residents without adequate transport. Councillor Penfold said the current system, which requires ratepayers to front up with their voucher and rates notice, disadvantages those who do not have a trailer or transport to the Mount Vincent Road facility. He said he had raised the matter with council after hearing from residents who had unsuccessfully attempted to provide the voucher to a company to dispose of their bulky waste on their behalf “My concern is that they are not doing all they can to support people without a trailer or a ute. Council are happy to explore the issue, but there is a concern that some in the community will take them and abuse the system.” Marilyn Philip is one resident who would like to provide the service free of charge, as she owns a trailer, saying that it is in simple community spirit. “I don’t want to see it abused, but we just want to help our neighbours and friends out.” Councillor Penfold suggested the service provider could also take a utilities bill, as they arrive once a quarter. “This would help minimise the chances of it being exploited,” he said. “We can’t continue to deny equity in the system.”

Pool staff, Council prepare for a busy swimming season at local pools Melissah Comber
I
t may currently be doom and gloom for the users of Beresfield Swimming Centre, but over the boundary of Maitland City Council, business is booming. In the 2012-2013 swim season, attendance skyrocketed by an average of 20 per cent across the Maitland and East Maitland facilities, with almost 100,000 entries to the Maitland Aquatic Centre. Council said that a combination of the weather and great services explained the jump in patronage. “We had so many hot days last summer, it’s not surprising so many people took advantage of our pools as a way to cool off while still enjoying the sunshine. “The splash pad at Maitland Pool is always a major draw card for families along with the learn to swim program.” This year, both pools will open on October 5 and from November to February will remain open until 6pm on the weekends. This is contrast to Newcastle City Council’s decision to slash the operating hours at their Beresfield pool, in which the swim season has been reduced from 28 weeks to 20 and the closing time changed to 3pm on the weekends. The pool will not open until October 28. A petition to reverse the cuts is to be presented to State Parliament.

Funding Our Future A SUSTAINABLE COUNCIL FOR A SUSTAINABLE CITY
RATING - WE NEED YOUR INPUT Council is talking with the community about funding the future we want for our city. Without significant change, Council will face a funding shortfall of $92 million over the next ten years. While all sources of Council income and potential savings are being examined, rates revenue will be a major part of the solution.
Enhance and improve services
Deliver reduced services and/or deficit budgets
Increase rates to deliver services as programmed, being 7.25% p/a for seven years. This option would see all services continue, as well as building an indoor 25m pool, construction of ‘The Levee’ and river link building in Central Maitland and upgrades to Maitland Railway Station precinct and surrounds. This would equate to an average increase of $89 per year on the average residential rate.
Increase rates sufficiently to improve or expand 18 key service areas, being 8.95% p/a for seven years. This would include all services and projects as programmed, as well as see new projects and programs initiated in line with community priorities, with a significant boost to road and footpath funding, improved city appearance, new youth facilities, expanded recreational cycleways and more. This would equate to an average increase of $116 per year on the average residential rate.
Increase rates by annual rate peg amount only, being approximately 3% p/a. This would result in deficit budgets and/or cuts to the broad range of council services as well as reductions in the initiatives already programmed. This would equate to an average increase of $35 per year on the average residential rate.

Local employment: We’ve got your next job right here
JobsInTheHunter.com.au CEO, Tim O’Brien, The Post sales representative Mark Brooker and The Post sales manager Paul Ellmers
A
new partnership between local jobs website, JobsInTheHunter. com.au, and the Post is delivering local jobs to local people. As its name suggests, JobsInTheHunter. com.au is a job search website, focused on the Hunter region. It features hundreds of vacant positions covering a range of industries across the Hunter, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie regions and offers free and premium job listings for employers and businesses. JobsInTheHunter.com.au CEO, Tim O’Brien, said the locally-focused website makes job searching easier and much less stressful. “The attraction for people who are actively looking for a job or even for those who just want to keep an eye on the employment market is that all of our jobs are local,” he said. “You tend to get lost on those larger jobs boards. You’ll find jobs from apprentice or
traineeships, right through to executive positions on our site and the niche is that it is local.” The Post sales manager, Paul Ellmers said both parties having a local focus made the partnership a perfect match. “I am excited with the joint venture as it fits with the Post’s mantra of being unashamedly local first, second and third.” Job seekers can find a selection of JobsInTheHunter.com.au listings under ‘Positions Vacant’ in the Post’s classifieds section each week. To view more than 350 additional local job listings, visit JobsInTheHunter.com.au. For businesses looking to recruit, the combined JobsInTheHunter.com.au and the Post newspaper’s 139,000 home delivery package provides unrivalled reach through the Hunter region. The development of the library’s photographic collection is a major step in the development of the city’s local studies resources, and will provide a unique perspective on our community at work and play. Everyone is welcome to attend the launch tomorrow at 6pm and to view the collection at Maitland Gaol from Friday, September 13 to Sunday, October 13. very picture tells a story and every historic picture speaks of our past. Whether it shows the clothes we wore, the homes we lived in, the way we interacted with the land or the events that interested us, historic photos are a valuable and timeless record of what life was once like. Maitland City Council’s photographic collection has evolved over many decades, with contributions from a number of departments within the organisation. For the first time, this eclectic collection has been collated and digitised, and will be accessible to the community starting from this week. The Maitland City Library digital photo collection entitled Picture, includes over 1,000 images of the local community and will be proudly showcased at one of our most significant historic sites – Maitland Gaol. The collection will be launched by the Mayor of Maitland, Cr Peter Blackmore, in a special event coinciding with NSW

Attacks at uni ‘a concern’
Student union calls for more help to address assaults on foreign students Amelia Parrott
N
ewcastle University Student Union (NUSA) representatives have called for more involvement from local and state governments to help solve the problem of racist taunts and assaults on students around the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus. The call for assistance comes less than two weeks after two separate assaults on students occurred within 24 hours of each other – one of which allegedly involved a student being struck with a dumbbell – angering the university’s international student community. NUSA international convenor, Eduardo Carvajal, said the university has a number of initiatives in place to ensure the safety of its students, including the University of Newcastle Safety and Crime Committee, a partnership between the university, NUSA, NSW Police and the Newcastle City Council, but said more needed to be done to engage the wider community. “At the present time the committee advocates for whatever happens on campus but we need to find the tools to do something bigger than that because at the end of the day most of the crime...most of the racist issues are happening out in the community,” he said. “We can easily say the campus is quite safe, even if we have some incidents, but the issue will not go away if we have just a bubble solution. “I hope this committee, in the future, [has strategies] coming from the very top with local and state government [contributing].” Newcastle crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Humphrey said despite the recent increase in reportage of assaults around the university in the media, there is currently no data to suggest a spike in crime.
Students serve up Kuwaiti cuisine as part of Cultural Awakenings, a recent University of Newcastle initiative to promote multiculturalism
The University of Newcastle has upped its after-hours security patrols in response to the recent assaults, increasing foot, bike and vehicle patrols by campus security guards. “Callaghan is the size of North Lambton
so there is always going to be some minor crime – stealing, malicious damage – but it is not an unsafe place to be,” he said. “We capture all uni-related data and the crime rates in the area are actually low.”
Nevertheless, Detective Chief Inspector Humphrey urged students and faculty to avoid walking around the university alone at night or with headphones on and to keep valuables out of plain view.

Opposition Leader highlights plight of affected hospital workers Amelia Parrott
I
t is not just doctors and nurses feeling the pressure of understaffing in hospitals across the Hunter region. According to state Opposition Leader John Robertson it is also the cleaners, kitchen staff, ward clerks, radiographers, pathologists and speech therapists who are bearing the brunt of the O’Farrell government’s $3 billion cuts to the health sector. Mr Robertson visited the region last Tuesday to meet with nurses from the Calvary Mater at Waratah, John Hunter Hospital at New Lambton Heights and Belmont Hospital in Lake Macquarie. “While the O’Farrell government talks about nurses and doctors being exempt from the cuts, the fact is it’s more than doctors and nurses that make our health system work,” he said. “If you remove some of the other staff it puts a greater workload on our nurses. Joanne Purdue, a clinical nurse educator and president of the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association Calvary Mater Newcastle Branch shared the Opposition Leader’s concerns. “[In the hospital] it’s a collaboration of everyone working together, from our kitchen to domestic staff, we all make a great team providing patient care and when you start removing some of those services it does affect the larger services

like allied health, nursing and medicine,” she said. NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, vehemently denied any health cuts in the Hunter region. “Labor knows there is no $3 billion cut to the NSW health system,” she said in a statement. “There are no
cuts to the Hunter New England Local Health District – in fact this financial year, like all financial years since the election, the district’s budget will go up. “In 2013/2014, the NSW health budget has gone up by 5.2 per cent to a record $17.9 billion.
Ms Skinner said the increase in funds this financial year will deliver 69,000 extra emergency department attendances, 34,000 additional hospital admissions, surgery for 3000 more patients and additional intensive care services.

Getting it right: Employers urged to check pay details
T
wo underpaid workers in the Hunter region have been backpaid a total of $22,800 following recent intervention by the Fair Work Ombudsman. In one case, a young Newcastle construction worker was underpaid $15,200 as a result of being paid at trainee rates in 2010-2011, despite his employer not officially registering him for a traineeship. Under workplace laws, only workers who are registered as trainees with the appropriate state authority can be classified and paid as trainees.
Fair Work Ombudsman, Natalie James, said the case highlights the importance of classifying employees correctly. “Even a small error in calculating an employee’s base hourly rate can result in a large amount having to be repaid if it’s left unchecked, as occurred in this case,” Ms James said. “No business wants to face a big bill for back-payment of wages they weren’t budgeting for.” In another case, a Maitland shop assistant was back-paid $7,600 after being underpaid wages in lieu of notice and long service leave entitlements upon termination earlier this year.
Free Food HygieNe SemiNarS
‘A food business must ensure that persons undertaking or supervising food handling operations have: • Skills in food safety and food hygiene matters; and • Knowledge of food safety and food hygiene matters commensurate with their work activities’. To assist food businesses, food handlers and volunteers in the food industry comply with this requirement Maitland City Council is hosting a free Food Hygiene Education Seminar.
Both underpayments were the result of the employers not being fully aware of their obligations. Fair Work Inspectors assisted the employers to voluntarily back-pay the employees and no further action was required. Ms James said when Fair Work Inspectors identify a problem and contact a business, most employers cross-check their records, realise they have made an error, and fix it immediately. “We have a flexible, fair approach and our preference is always to work with employers to educate them and help them voluntarily rectify any non-

compliance issues we find,” she said. The Fair Work Ombudsman’s website (www.fairwork.gov.au) has a variety of tools and resources to help employers understand and comply with their workplace obligations. The online tools include an Award Finder and PayCheck Plus to help business owners determine the correct pay rates for workers. Businesses without human resources staff can ensure they are better equipped when hiring, managing and dismissing employees by using the free template employment documentation.

A
glorious run of sunny spring days can only mean one thing – summer is around the corner, and while Australia is a summer lover’s paradise, the best way to make sure you enjoy summer is to be sure you are prepared. Whether it be a day on one of Newcastle or Lake Macquarie’s beautiful beaches, a stroll along the serene Hunter River, or just mowing the lawn, essential items for your summer lovin’ are sunscreen, sunglasses and hats. According to the Cancer Council, 2,000 Australians died from preventable skin cancer in 2011, so always be sure to slip, slop, slap and wear a hat and sunnies. Of course, summer needn’t only be about the sun. Cracking a cold one with friends around the barbie, before retreating to the air conditioner, can spell the perfect end to a sweltering day. Just make sure your barbeque and air conditioner are in perfect working order and you’ll be good to go. However you choose to spend this summer, do it safely and you’re certain to have a ripper of a time!

What a difference a day makes
N
ewcastle four-piece 24 Hours was formed by James Body and John Shelton when a lifeline was sent out to the boys (Chris and Scotty) to come and help finish ten gigs the pair had on the books, and they only had 24 hours to pull it off, hence the name. 24 Hours had been playing as a fivepiece band for five years when Dave Realm joined the show. Now, ten years on, 24 Hours have been able to breathe life back into some old rock classics, while still being able to stay in touch with some of the latest rock songs and do them justice. These guys have performed more than 600 gigs and show no signs of
this duo of sticking to one musical genre. Matt and Scott, who make up Twinsanity, are both multi-instrumentalists who use keyboards, synths, drums, guitars and a plethora of musical gadgetry to put everything they have into each show. Twinsanity have made it their business to be as versatile as possible, so why not get along to Harrigan’s Irish Pub, Pokolbin on Sunday, September 15.

The results are in: Whole fruit beats juice every time
have heard some people say they the reason they don’t eat fruit is because of its high sugar content. While we should definitely be cutting out nutritionless sugar foods like soft drinks or processed junk, fruit should still be an essential feature on a healthy menu. British, US and Singaporean researchers analysed data from three significant investigations that took place in the United States over a quarter of a century. The result? Eating whole fresh fruit, especially blueberries, grapes, apples and pears, is linked to a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, but drinking fruit juice has the opposite effect. People who ate at least two servings each week of certain whole fruits, such as blueberries, grapes and apples, reduced their risk of Type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 per cent compared to those who ate less than one serving per month. “Our findings provide novel evidence suggesting certain fruits may be especially beneficial for
lower diabetes risk,” said Qi Sun, an assistant professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. On the other hand, those who consumed one or more servings of fruit juice each day increased their risk of developing the disease by as much as 21 per cent. Swapping three servings of juice per week for whole fruits resulted in a seven per cent reduction in risk. The paper, published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), speculates that even if the nutritional values of whole fruit and fruit juice are similar, the difference lies with the fact that one food is semi-solid and the other a liquid. The study also says berries and grapes have compounds called anthocyanins which have been found to lower the risk of heart attacks. It is well worth remembering that a lot of the beneficial parts of food do not make it through processing. So the clear message is to always try for fresh food.
Spring has sprung, so time to let the colours bloom
W
ith spring comes flowers, baby animals, warm weather and the strong desire to get down to the beach and immerse yourself in the cool waves. I love this time of year – the sun is out and the air is warm but not quite hot enough to keep us indoors. It allows us to get around in the prettiest of dresses, your basic t-shirts that have been locked away for the winter, the most stylish shorts, the newest trends in swimwear and whatever else you have in your wardrobe that will bare your skin to the world. Spring is the beginning of many things and for me, it is the beginning of my favourite fashion season. It is when we welcome new trends in swimwear; discovering what we will be wearing to the pool and beach for the next six months. Of course, with the changes in swimwear and beach fashions come a whole new range of beachwear accessories from hats and umbrellas

to the coolest new beach toys and games. We get to see a new season of ‘spring carnival’ dresses in thousands of different prints, shapes, colours and styles, plus we welcome the new shoes and clutches to match. Accessories, like sunglasses and handbags change with the fashions as well. The European spring/summer saw bright coloured, reflective shades worn by men and women overseas so there is a good chance we will be wearing them in the months ahead. Spring also means that we start wearing a whole different selection of colours and prints. Last year all the ladies were wearing beautiful florals in soft pinks, greens and purples whilst the men were wearing more earthy tones, including mustard. We will be seeing a lot of creams, black and whites as well as some brighter pinks and oranges this season.

azda Motor Corporation will begin testing its advanced safety vehicle, the Mazda6 ASV-5, on public roads from this month. The vehicle will be used to test a driving safety support system which utilises intelligent transport systems (ITS)*1 jointly developed by industrial, academic and government organisations. The car will also take part in the 20th ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013 in October and demonstrate a futuristic safety system that will see trams and automobiles communicating with each other on the streets of Hiroshima. The 20th ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013 runs from Monday, October 14, through Friday, October 18. The event features an exhibition of advanced safety technologies and sessions on a wide range of topics with participants and speakers coming from all over the world. There are also a number of showcase demonstrations, including one held in Hiroshima from October 20
to 21, showcasing the world’s first safety system that utilises tram-to-vehicle communication technology. Used by approximately 150,000 people daily, trams form an essential component of Hiroshima’s public transportation system. The new safety system enables communication between trams and automobiles equipped with an autonomous sensor. The trial is aimed at verifying the system’s ability to prevent collisions and support smooth and safe driving. The system was developed and is being tested by the Hiroshima ITS Research Unit*2 with sponsorship from the Hiroshima ITS Public Road Test Consortium*3. There is renewed interest in trams globally as a form of eco-friendly public transport, and improving technology is also reducing the impact that private automobiles have on the environment. This experiment advances collaborative research aimed at establishing a safe transportation system.

‘Whole new ballgame’ Focus turns to Sunday’s finals clash against the Bulldogs
A
s a result of Sunday’s 54-6 win over the Parramatta Eels, the Knights will take on the Canterbury Bulldogs in an elimination final at ANZ Stadium on Sunday September 15. “We have to try and keep it as normal as we can, but it is a different game, it is a different format now for us,” coach Wayne Bennett said after the Knights win on Sunday. “It is one chance and if you get it wrong, it is all over for you. “It is really nice to be there that is the bottom line here, the thing I have learned about the play offs is that you can’t do anything if you are not in them. “You can have all your critics and they can all fault your game and your team, but that is ok... at least you have a chance to do something about it on the day.” Stand-in captain Jarrod Mullen, who scored the Knights final try during Sunday’s victory, attended the NRL Captain’s Call in Sydney on Monday morning. “We have had a long season and the season starts again for or us now in the semi finals,” Mullen said. “It is a whole new ball game now so every game is different death for us and we want to keep winning.” In good news for the team ahead of this weekend’s finals, Mullen (ankle) was the only injury concern to come out of the game, but he is not expected to miss any game time. “He (Mullen) hobbled back in to position and did a really good job for us,” Bennett said.

“He has a little bit of swelling there on his ankle but it is not too serious and obviously will be ok to go next week. “Everybody else is good, which is your biggest worry on a day like today.”
Jeremy Smith made a successful return from a rib injury that kept him sidelined for three weeks and Adam Cuthbertson is a chance of returning from a groin injury for Sunday’s final.
