aitland CBD is set to get a little more musical with the Conservatorium of Music opening its doors in High Street this weekend.

The move is the result of a partnership between the Conservatorium and Maitland City Council and is aimed at improving

the cultural facilities on offer in the centre of Maitland.

Maitland Mayor Peter Blackmore said having the conservatorium in High Street would do a lot to improve the city’s cultural landscape.

“Here in Maitland we have a history of recognising the arts with many talented people residing in our city,” he said.

“Of course, we have the world class Art Gallery which showcases an appreciation of the arts in both its

interior and its stunning architecture.

To add the Conservatorium of Music to the cultural offering in Maitland can only be a positive step for our city now and into the future.”

Head of the Conservatorium of Music, Professor Richard Vella, said the move would allow the Conservatorium to be seen by more local musicians.

“It’s an exciting opportunity as it offers us more exposure [being] in a place where a lot of people walk by.

“Maitland and that whole area is very fast growing, so it makes sense for us to want to be there.”

The Conservatorium of Music will host a community open day on Saturday, May 18 at its new facility at 301 High Street from 10am until 1pm.

The day will feature musical performances, demonstrations and early childhood music classes.

his week is National Volunteer Week, Australia’s largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism.

While I’ve long suspected we are a nation of people hardwired to help one another, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, a staggering 6 million people volunteer their time across the country in various ways each and every year.

This represents almost 40 per cent of the adult population.

Here at the Post, each week we are contacted by people to let us know of a volunteer who is making a difference in their community.

It’s not unusual for many of the volunteers to have been giving their time for over twenty or thirty years.

And in the paper itself, you can see examples of volunteers at work in the community – for example, the wonderful foster carers who send us profiles of pets for our weekly Animal Rescue column, opposite.

If you know of anyone who volunteers their time (and it’s a fair bet that you do), you can visit Volunteering Australia’s Facebook page and post a messages of thanks, as well as pictures and videos.

Hospital receives equipment to improve cardiac care

T

he State Government last week announced that Maitland Hospital will receive $110,000 in funding towards new cardiac equipment.

NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, and Maitland MP, Robyn Parker, made the announcement at the hospital last Friday and Mrs Skinner said the NSW Government’s investment in eight additional mobile heart monitoring units will enhance cardiac care provided at the hospital.

“It’s wonderful to visit Maitland Hospital today to announce the addition of this equipment for the benefit of patients and staff,” Mrs Skinner said.

“These mobile heart monitoring units will ease pressure in the hospital’s busy emergency department while also supporting staff to continue to provide the quality care for which they are known.”

Mrs Skinner said the monitoring (telemetry) units are an important diagnostic tool that will assist in quick and accurate diagnosis of patients with symptoms including chest pain, abnormal heart rhythms or stroke-like symptoms.

“In the past, some of these patients have remained in the emergency department hooked up to permanent bedside monitors while waiting for mobile units to become available,” Mrs Skinner said.

Sad days for gender relations

V

eteran journalist Geoffery Barker recently wrote a column about the state of TV news, entitled ‘Switch off the TV babes for some real news – talentless pertbreasted reporters don’t know the world, let alone journalism.’

Throughout the article, female TV journalists were described as “blondes...with arctic white teeth, their breasts pert and perky” and “Postpubescent babes with their empty chatter” that got their jobs through “mickey-mouse diplomas” with “narcissistic personalities and egos bigger than Toko.”

Wow! You can imagine the reaction all that attracted.

On Twitter, the online equivalent of a lynch mob was unleashed. Every post seemed to be synchronised in outrage. Various counter columns flowed and Geoffrey Barker’s name could no longer be tweeted or said without various profanities following.

The generalisation of the article was offensive – but so was the response.

I think I’m going to get slammed here for breaking away from ‘the sisterhood’, but here goes...

Barker, an experienced journalist, was lamenting the state of commercial news – and the broader point of his column was completely missed by feminists, blinded by outrage, who howled him down.

Barker was wrong to just attack pretty females – there are plenty of ‘ugly’ journalists, of the male variety too, that are also below par.

But he has a point when he says some of them are there just for their aesthetics. I believe there is a small minority that just shouldn’t be called journalists – because they aren’t.

The said “pert-breasted reporters” do work hard; you wouldn’t survive in the TV industry if you didn’t. But others are just not believable – they rely on other journalist asking the right questions in media conferences and usually a good producer to get them through. I’ve seen it.

To deny the existence of pretty blondes on TV, which have not much more than a good rehearsed delivery, is naive. Some people do make it based on their sex appeal – but maybe that says more about the audience than it does anything else.

The self-righteous people who selectively reduced Mr Barker’s opinion piece down to little more than an attack on blondes with good boobs, are wrong.

Lately, the accusation of sexism is bandied around too much. In my working life, I’ve rarely encountered it in my workplace and most men I know just don’t see a female/male divide.

When you can no longer pay a compliment to a woman for looking nice/sexy/health/pretty – that will be a very sad day. It feels like we’re getting close.

aitland Mayor Peter Blackmore is urging people across the Hunter to support their councils by voting yes at the referendum on Constitutional recognition for Local Government to be held alongside the Federal election on September 14.

Cr Blackmore has joined Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and Cessnock Mayors in strongly supporting last week’s announcement by PM Julia Gillard.

“Maitland City Council has long shown support for Constitutional recognition for Local Government, to safeguard the Federal Government’s vital position of support for local communities,” he said.

“If this referendum is successful it would allow the federal grants and funding programs currently on offer for Councils to continue without threat and have this important relationship officially recognised and preserved into the future.”

Council has previously

received federal funding through the Roads to Recovery, Black Spots and Local and Regional Infrastructure Programs.

Last year, Council received $11.3 million for a major upgrade of Athel D’Ombrain Drive to stimulate housing development in Central Maitland through the federal Building Better Regional Cities Program.

Councillor says she’s committed to preserving land in growing suburb

he massive rise in urban development in Aberglasslyn has prompted Maitland councillor Nicole Penfold to reaffirm her commitment to preserving a piece of bushland in the growing suburb.

The wooded area is situated on a piece of council owned-land off Weblands Street in Aberglasslyn, which has been zoned as residential for some 40 years.

Concrete footpaths run through the trees and it is frequented by residents who use the space for leisure activities.

Cr Penfold told the Post she had heard concerns from a number of local residents about the future of the site, fearing the bushland would not be preserved should the surrounding grassland be developed.

“The roads are quite busy around Aberglasslyn and it is a rapidly expanding area, so you need to preserve places where you can take your children and walk around without the worry of cars around you,” Cr Penfold said.

“I accept and agree that the largely grassland portion of the site will be developed and the proceeds should go to fund future assets like building a quality gateway form the CBD mall to the river.”

Cr Penfold said she and Cr Philip Penfold would not support the removal of the many acres of wooded area on the site.

A spokesperson from Maitland City Council said that Council currently has no future plans for the land in question.

I

n the last week there’s been plenty of talk about the possibility of a fly-in fly-out (FIFO) camp being established in Singleton. Like many leaders across the Hunter, I hold great concern about the impacts of a camp of this nature being developed in an established and well connected town like Singleton.

At a meeting last week, myself and a number of others from across the region were told of the troubles many mining towns around the country have experienced with these camps.

The camps themselves become fully equipped towns themselves, offering workers their own, exclusive facilities.

They often share accommodation – down to their beds – with workers who fly in from other cities while they fly out.

It makes for a lack of respect for the city they spend time in, while their work separates the residents from the visitors.

This is not something we need in this

region, with many skilled workers living in not only Singleton but throughout the Lower and Upper Hunter. With the advent of the Hunter Expressway, it will be even easier for workers from places like Newcastle and Lake Macquarie to access the Upper Hunter and take up some of these positions earmarked for FIFO workers.

I believe that, wherever possible, we should be supporting local families, communities and economies – this means prioritising our own people.

This has a flow-on effect as those people spend their money at local shops, send their children to local schools and become part of the wider community. They join groups such as the Lions, Rotary and sporting clubs.

To deprive local people of jobs – and a life in the Hunter – by putting FIFO workers first would be an injustice to our communities.

Volunteers in Policing

ver the weekend gone, seven Volunteers in Policing (VIPs) from the Central Hunter Local Area Command attended Mudgee for the annual VIP conference. The conference was attended by 120 Volunteers in Policing from across the State.

The conference was timely, in that this week is National Volunteers Week, when we recognise the essential work carried out by volunteers in the community.

Volunteers have been working with the NSW Police Force since 1995. Current figures show 1.9 million hours have been donated to the community in this time. In the local area, we have had VIPs almost from the start of the program. Several of these long serving members are still contributing their services to this day.

There are currently thirteen VIPs in the Central Hunter Area. The duties they carry

out range from attending local commercial premises through the Biskeys program to contacting and surveying victims of crime.

Some VIPs contribute greatly by assisting with the filing of Court papers which is an onerous job. Others have contributed by assisting police with open days and functions throughout the area. A great example of this was the dedication showed by the six VIPs who assisted police over the Tocal Field day weekend.

One of the greatest contributions of the Central Hunter VIPs is their ongoing personal support of police and to morale.

In the coming weeks, Central Hunter Police will be having a function to recognise the duties the VIPs carry out on the Police Stations. Several will be individually recognised for the years and hours they have contributed, all will certainly thanked by police.

Dire picture for gallery

Council funding the “only option” to keep gallery afloat Amelia Parrott

essnock Regional Art Gallery could face closure in as little as 18months if Cessnock City Council fails to provide ongoing financial support to cover its operational costs, the gallery’s director says.

The gallery submitted a funding request to Cessnock City Council for $120,000 per year to be included in Council’s budget.

to the Council’s 2013/14 budget, which is currently on public exhibition as part of Council’s Draft 2013-2017 Delivery Plan.

Cessnock Regional Art Gallery Director, John Barnes, said the funding source that allowed the gallery to open in 2008 has moved to Queensland, leaving the gallery without a steady stream of funds.

He said Council backing was the gallery’s only remaining funding option.

“There is no way you could generate the kind of funding that we need from sponsorships...even though we have developed good relationships with wineries and members of the tourism industry in the region,” Dr Barnes said. “We really need a commitment to ongoing funding from Council to cover out operation costs.”

Despite the gallery’s dire situation, Dr Barnes said Maitland Regional Art Gallery’s

recent success in securing more funding from neighbouring Maitland City Council had given him renewed faith.

“I think that was a real boost for our cause and proof that there is real Council support of galleries.”

A spokesperson from Cessnock City Council told the Post that submissions would be considered for adoption on June 19.

HNE Health: Activity the key to longevity

ne in three people over 65 have a potentially life-threatening fall each year, but Hunter New England (HNE) Health says many of these falls can be prevented.

Last week HNE Health held a workshop to discuss the strategies that are helping older people remain active and healthy whilst in HNE Health’s care in order to prevent serious falls.

HNE Health Falls Injury Prevention Coordinator, Patsy Bourke, said the sessions help staff identify which people require more specialised care to manage the risk of a fall.

“A fall is serious and can lead to long-term hospitalisation, loss of independence, the need for supported care and, in some cases, premature death…,” Mrs Bourke said.

“As we age, our bodies lose muscle strength, so the more active we remain the better chance we have of keeping our muscles strong and our joints mobile.

“Staying physically active is the single most important thing we can do to stay fit and independent.”

Mrs Bourke said that by improving balance and strength – particularly in the leg muscles – people can reduce their risk of falling and suffering a fall-related injury.

This allows people to complete regular daily activities more easily, including getting up and down stairs, in and out of cars and negotiating uneven surfaces. HNE

First step to reform

Ministers sign off on NDIS rollout in the Hunter

heers and applause broke out at House with No Steps in Lambton on Thursday morning as Federal Minister for Disability Reform, Jenny Macklin, and NSW Minister for Disability Services, Andrew Constance, signed off on a bilateral agreement to rollout the national disability insurance scheme, DisabilityCare Australia, across the State, beginning in the Hunter.

Ms Macklin said the Commonwealth worked closely with the State Government to select the Hunter as the launch site.

“We agreed that the Hunter would be a terrific place to start,” she said.

“It is the biggest launch site in Australia so 10,000 people here in the Hunter will come into the scheme starting from July 1.

“But the great news for NSW is that they have also signed up for the full scheme, so between now and the middle of 2018, we’ll see around 140,000 people across NSW come into DisabilityCare Australia.”

Mr Constance said the rollout of the scheme in the Hunter would be a valuable learning tool for the rest of the country.

“In many ways we are going to learn from the launch site in terms of how it works and that will ultimately benefit everyone as the scheme spreads.”

Mr Constance identified the need to fill positions in the disability services industry.

He claimed DisabilityCare Australia would create 25,000 new jobs, some of which will be in the Hunter.

A national approach to IBS

A

ustralia has one of the highest rates of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the world, and the problem is getting worse.

But the lifelong disease that mostly affects young people has a low profile, even though it cost the national economy more than $A352.8 million.

The number of Australians with IBD is expected to grow from 75,000 to 100,000 by 2023.

Experts say more young people are being diagnosed with IBD – which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis – every year.

A PricewaterhouseCoopers report commissioned by Crohn’s and Colitis Australia calls for a national approach to IBD care.

According to The Australian, Gastroenterologist Dr Greg Moore says at the moment, access to appropriate treatment is inconsistent and patients usually only see specialists when the problem flares.

But relapses are unpredictable and failing to treat IBD when it is active can lead to prolonged exposure to medications, adverse side effects,

potentially invasive surgery or even death.

The cause of IBD is unknown, but it is more common in developed countries and possibly to do with hygienic living or diet.

Dr Moore says GPs have poor knowledge of the condition and there is no permanent source of government funding for IBD nurses.

What we do know that the stomach and digestive system is a mass of bacteria, yeasts and assorted microbes.

Our microbiome is essential for the health of our whole body and exposure to the environmental toxins we all face now is having a detrimental effect on all of us.

We should all try to limit exposure to things like anti-bacterial agents, pesticides and pollutants and increase our probiotic exposure. Remember, a child that gets to play outside and get his hands dirty is a normal part of growing up and should be encouraged.

In the same way, we lift heavier weights to develop muscle strength.

The more our body is allowed to use its own natural defence systems, the better it becomes at using them.

Taming a bad hair day

S

ometimes you get those days when your hair just doesn’t do what you want it to: the dreaded bad hair day.

A bad hair day has the potential to ruin everything about the day; no matter what you have planned or what you will be doing, your confidence is at an all time low and so is your selfesteem.

I had one this week where no amount of straightening, curling or brushing would rectify my position and I was left feeling really down.

It was fluffy, not curly or straight and just looked completely lifeless and to be honest, I felt a little lifeless myself.

I had a terrible day and when I woke up the next morning my hair looked just how it should look (yay) and I left my bad hair day behind me.

It was on my good hair day that I realised that my bad hair day didn’t have to be so bad.

My problem was that I stressed out so much because my usual style wasn’t working for me so I ruled out any other style – BIG MISTAKE!

A bad hair day is a great excuse to try something new and after much thought, I came up with a number of bad hair day saves that will get anyone back on track for the day.

• The first save is the braid. Without fail, a braid will smooth out your hair and give you that effortless ‘I didn’t try to hard’ look. It works especially well for girls with long hair but if you have short hair, don’t rule it out – give it a go. If a braid is a little too complex, a simple plait still does the trick.

• A hat or a beanie works wonders on a bad hair day, even for the guys.

A sunny day is a great excuse to wear a broad sun hat, but as the days are getting quite chilly, a beanie is an easy option!

• A messy bun is a great way to take advantage of a bad hair day. Just pull all your hair up into a knot, secure with a hair elastic and, if you please, pin up any flyaway bits (although sometimes these look really pretty!).

• Finally, use bobby pins to your advantage. Experiment with pinning different bits up to find a look that works for your hair.

Round of upsets

he 2013 Tooheys Cup competition had some real life put back into it with two massive upsets on Sunday. The battle is now well and truly back on after previously undefeated Western Suburbs and South Newcastle were beaten by Central Newcastle and Kurri Kurri respectively.

This certainly makes this weekends’ Round 6 full of clashes with real importance as sides look to maintain or improve their position on the ladder.

With the Senior Country Championship squad to be selected on Sunday night after Round 6, individual performances will be watched closely for the much sought after positions in the Newcastle Rebels side.

On Saturday at 3pm, the resurgent Kurri Kurri will be full of confidence against a Western Suburbs outfit who are coming off the surprise loss to Central Newcastle.

Now they have got things going, Kurri are going to be tough for anyone to beat on their own turf and West’s will be needing to aim up to avoid successive losses.

On Sunday at 3pm, the winless Lakes United will need to improve greatly. With Rip Taylor at the helm, this will surely happen sooner rather than later and they will need to against a Cessnock side

who get their season kick started with a massive win over the Port Stephens Sharks last Saturday. Should be an entertaining fixture at Cahill Oval.

At Lakeside Sporting Complex at 3pm, the local derby will take place between Port Stephens and the Maitland Pickers.

he final of the Hunter District Pairs was played last weekend at Telarah B.C. East Cessnock’s Troy Burton and Clint Doust took on the Kurri duo of Nathan Dawson and Aaron Appleby.

The Kurri side were too good on the day, scoring a convincing victory. The win was another feather in the cap for Kurri, having scored victories in the District Singles and the Number 1 and Number 3 District Pennants.

Congratulations are also in order for Marion Crump and Heidi Mungoven, who this week won through the qualifying rounds of the Australian Ladies Indoor Singles Championship.

These two Hunter Ladies players will now go on to play at Tweed Heads in the National Indoor Singles Championship. Well done ladies.

Four up-and-comers picked for Young Matildas camp

hree Emerging Jets players are among 16 up-and-coming football stars from around the country who were selected to attend a Young Matildas camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra last week.

Eliza Campbell, Mikaela Howell and Grace Macintyre, who are currently part of the Emerging Jets Under 18s squad, were asked to attend the camp, which wrapped up on Sunday, May 12.

Campbell and Howell were both part of the 2012-13 Westfield W-League Newcastle Jets team, while Macintyre was part of the train on squad and also made her debut appearance in the Westfield W-League against Adelaide.

Their fellow Newcastle Jets team mate, Tara Andrews, was also picked to be part of the elite contingent.

Northern NSW Football Technical Director, David Smith, said the selection of the four Northern NSW born players is a coup for the women’s game in Northern NSW and shows the strength coming up through the ranks.

“It is very satisfying for Emerging Jets coaching staff to see Grace included in the selections, along with Mikaela and Eliza who have again received invitations into the camp,” Mr Smith said.

“Tara continues to set the bar for the other girls to aim to achieve...

“To have [four] players selected within the Young Matildas is a feather in the cap for women’s football in our region,” he said.
