mall plan approved The revitalisation of Maitland Mall has been given a push forward with the Levee being officially approved. Maitland councillors voted unanimously at last week’s meeting for the $14.8 million development, which will create a link to the Hunter River and is said to be the key to the invigoration of the mall. Maitland Mayor, Peter Blackmore, said he was confident the project would breathe life into High Street.

tate MPs Kevin Humphries and Robyn Parker were treated to some of the finest pancakes in Maitland when they dropped into the Hunter headspace centre last week.

Ms Parker and Mr Humphries, Minister for Healthy Lifestyles and Mental Health, were making a return visit to the PHaMs cooking group, which operates out of the headspace kitchen. PHaMs, or the Personal Helpers and Mentors service, is a mental health outreach service which is recovery focused.

Barbara Trounson from PHaMs said that the cooking group was a very important part of the lives of its members. “It’s a chance for them to socialise and become engaged in the community,” she said. The group has been running for 18 months every second Friday, and has eight regular members.

Mr Humphries said that these kinds of services are an invaluable tool in the recovery of those suffering from mental illness, and should be encouraged. “A real danger is that those who suffer become isolated and increasingly ill,” he said. “Programs like this one provide good, community based care.”

hen thinking about what to write in today’s column, it dawned on me how often I have touched on Federal politics in these pages over recent months. Yes, we are a local community newspaper, and that’s what you’ll see reflected in every page, every week – local stories. But it seems to happen that nary a week goes by without a polarising, embarrassing or cynical incident that draws our attention to the participants of the 43rd Parliament of Australia. And, if you go to schools, sporting matches or businesses around town, it’s these events that everyone seems to be talking about. Would it be overstating it to say that the last week has been one of the most distasteful in Federal politics in living memory? I don’t think it would. We saw the Prime Minister using a gathering of confected collective, Women for Gillard, which was closed to the media, to reignite the socalled ‘gender wars’. The PM told the rally that Tony Abbott would bring the issue of Abortion back to the agenda if he

GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED NOW!

2

The most important thing you may do for your health this winter is get your skin checked The sun-smart message is often neglected during the winter. Winter may prove to be the best time for a full skin check. As most people are covered up during the winter months, this minimises sun exposure to skin lesions and moles. This can allow for better dermoscopy viewing (a distinct magnifying light, which allows a doctor to closely examine spots on the skin). Remember to protect your skin this winter by applying 50+ sunscreen to exposed areas of skin. If you notice a spot on the skin that looks different from the others or is changing, bleeding or itchy, it should be examined by a doctor.

were elected, in the process calling into question the integrity of any man who deigns to wear a tie of the blue variety – which I’d suggest is every man in Australia. The rank cynicism of the whole enterprise, which included leaking the video footage and producing a transcript for the media, was all designed to cause the often hapless Opposition Leader to say something silly in response, which would flame the Government’s campaign against him and cost him the female vote. Then, there was menugate. A vile piece of literature, the infamous menu that referenced the PM was created if not for, then at the time of, a fundraiser by controversy-prone Liberal candidate for Fisher, Mal Brough. But if you believe the conspiracy theorists, the menu had in fact surfaced months ago before being produced from a top drawer somewhere to temper the lukewarm, if not hostile reaction to the PM’s words on Tuesday. Thursday afternoon brought us Howard Sattler-gate, when the Perth shock-jock asked the PM on air whether her long-term partner @newcastlepost Newcastle Post

and first bloke, Tim Mathieson, was gay. Because, we all wanted to know, right? No, we didn’t. As if it wasn’t bad enough that the PM’s private parts were the talk of the nation thanks to that menu, we were now discussing her sex life. Sattler was promptly suspended and later sacked by his embarrassed employers. And now, as I write this on Monday, it seems that Kevin Rudd is beating down the door to another tilt at the Prime Ministership in the last two sitting weeks of the Parliament before the election. When will it all end? Well, definitely by September 14. Maybe next week. If not before. Who knows. *** Changing pace somewhat to turn to a similar battle of epic proportions, the excitement is growing for the second State of Origin match in QLD next week. I was pleased to hear of the NRL’s decision to crack down on fighting during games. If it’s not allowed on the streets, why is it allowed on the field? For those who say they’ll miss the biff, watch re-runs of past games. Go the Blues!

Pauline Hanson uses Hunter visit to discuss petty party politics Amelia Parrott

ormer One Nation Party leader and NSW Senate candidate Pauline Hanson used her time in the Hunter to weigh into the current debate surrounding the so called “gender war” between the Labor Party and the Coalition. During a visit to Charlestown Square shopping centre in Newcastle, her first in a series of planned state-wide visits leading up to the election in September, Ms Hanson said the personal attacks from both sides of politics needed to stop but disagreed with claims that Tony Abbott’s past comments have been misogynistic. “I think it’s being pedantic,” she said of Ms Gillard. “I think she’s just using it as a way to attack Tony Abbott. “If you’re going to attack someone, attack them on their policies. “I don’t get personal, I stick with the facts and that’s what [the major parties] should be doing.” Ms Hanson said the sledging between Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott was a major concern being raised to her by voters. “People say to me, ‘The way they carry on in Parliament, throwing back and forth with the personal criticisms’...I don’t like it and that’s what the general feeling is from the populace. “People want to know what they are going to do for the country.” Ms Hanson also used her visit to outline

– small breasts, huge thighs and a big red box’ for a fundraiser? Under no circumstances is it okay to mock the Prime Minister’s private parts. It’s not funny. It’s appalling. It’s undignified. It’s sickening. It’s offensive to all women. It’s offensive to the Office of Prime Minister and it makes me sad about the state of politics in this country. Tony Abbott, to his credit, condemned it, saying, “I think that we should all be bigger and better than that”.

But Mr Abbott was wrong to compare it to a joke made about him and his chief of staff. “Whether it’s a tacky, scatological menu out the front of a Liberal Party event; whether it’s squalid jokes told at union conference dinners with ministers present – whatever it is I think we should be better than that,” he said. No, Mr Abbott. This time it wasn’t a joke from an uncouth comedian. Regardless of whether or not it was distributed, someone thought this insult was appropriate for a $1,000-a-head fundraiser. What is it about this Queensland seat? The current member is Peter Slipper, who also charmingly referred to a particular female organ as looking like “muscles removed from their shells”. The quail joke is one of the worst things I’ve seen in politics for a while. As a woman, I am offended and unfortunately I don’t believe Mr Abbott has gone far enough. He had an opportunity to draw a line in the sand and as leader of the Liberal Party he should have apologised without qualification. After writing about some of the rare and more beautiful moments in parliament last week, this week we have truly seen the ugly underbelly.

ulia Gillard is wrong to play the gender card, and the latest play of that card was exceedingly desperate. Ms Gillard intimated that the election of Tony Abbott would make abortion “the political play thing of men who think they know better”. Even to an adoring crowd at a ‘Women for Gillard’ event, her most strident supporters would have cringed. Surely. Let’s not forget, single women have been taken off parenting payments and put on the low paid Newstart allowance on Gillard’s watch. The Prime Minister was happy to pose for a selfie with the king of misogyny, Kyle Sandilands, who happened to be a guest at Kirribilli House. She’s also made a more recent decision to support a factional faceless man, David Feeney, for a safe Labor seat, endorsing him over two brilliant women even after calling for more women to enter politics. Julia Gillard often plays the gender card for pure political advantage, but this week, all on their own, the Liberal Party have shown there may be some truth to the accusations with “menu-gate”. any Hunter residents would know the stories behind exMaitland Gaol inmates like Darcy Dugan, Neddy Smith and Ivan Milat, but what about the women who were imprisoned within the gaol’s walls? Local historian Pam Harrison will uncover the stories of the women who resided in A Wing at the gaol from 1849 to 1869 with her talk, Gaol Birds at Maitland Gaol, this Thursday night. Dr Harrison, whose great-greatgrandfather was governor of the gaol from 1851 to 1867, said women were forced to endure “ghastly” conditions in the gaol. “A Wing was the only building and at that time there were only two isolation cells and the rest were larger cells that held a maximum of five people, but that would

really be overcrowding it,” she said. “The women were put upstairs to try and keep them away from the men but they were all in the same building.” The talk will cover the grim living conditions of the women and children who sometimes lived in the gaol with their mothers, the rape and seemingly false imprisonment of one inmate and protests to free other female inmates. Dr Harrison said the talk would be a unique opportunity to learn about the women of Maitland Gaol. “I think it’s just a different angle because you normally only hear about the men, in fact, you only hear about the men!” Dr Harrison will deliver her Gaol Birds talk at Maitland Gaol on Thursday, June 20 from 6pm. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased from a Maitland City Library branch, by phoning 4933 6952 or via the Maitland City Council website.

he approvals of an interim occupation certificate and a new car park at Maitland Private Hospital have renewed calls for better pedestrian access to the site. The occupation certificate was issued for the newly constructed 25-bed mental health ward at the East Maitland site, prior to the completion of a 33-space car park. Local resident Sally Harrison has been petitioning Council since September for a pedestrian crossing or concrete island to be installed on Chisholm Road. “You’ve got pregnant women and the elderly attending appointments here, but they have to park in the street and try and get a across a busy road,” she said. Ms Harrison also expressed concern about students accessing Hunter Valley Grammar School and the additional

traffic that will be generated by the new hospital beds, increasing the volume already using the area to access Ashtonfield, the East Maitland retirement community and Greenhills Shopping Centre. “To me it’s all about access – I’m not against the development of the hospital, people just need to be able move to and from safely.” Ms Harrison also described an accident she witnessed at the intersection of Chisholm Road and Molly Morgan Drive in which a truck failed to give way. In correspondence with Ms Harrison, Council acknowledged that some vehicles were not compliant, but referred to the existing rule that states anyone approaching a tee-intersection from a side road must give way. Ms Harrison said that this was not good enough. “It’s a matter of time before someone gets killed,” she said.

Local CEO encourages other leaders to sleep rough for the homeless

H

unter Valley Training Company (HVTC) CEO Sharon Smith is calling on other business and community leaders to join her in ‘sleeping rough’ to help the region’s growing number of homeless people. Ms Smith is participating in the inaugural St Vincent de Paul Hunter Region CEO Sleepout on Thursday, June 20, an event that gives leaders a glimpse of what life is like for the homeless. The Hunter is experiencing an increasing trend of homelessness and lack of affordable housing, backed up by statistics from the St Vincent de Paul Society’s Hunter branch, who say they assisted 238 people in Newcastle, 377 in the Lower Hunter and 126 in Lake Macquarie between July 2012-March 2013. Ms Smith said homelessness in the Hunter is a “huge issue”, especially for “our young people, with 56 per cent of NSW’s homeless population under the age of 35,” she said. “An increasing number of people in our community don’t have the luxury of a roof over their heads and that is something we all have a responsibility to change.” There are 23 CEOs registered to participate in the Hunter Sleepout, including Matt Gidley, CEO Newcastle Knights; Kristen Keegan, CEO Hunter Business Chamber; and Paul Hughes, CEO Newcastle Airport. However, Ms Smith wants to see this number double. Each CEO has to raise at least $5,000 to participate, with funds directed towards

Green light for Levee Approved Mall revitalisation plan “the way forward”, says Mayor Melissah Comber

T

he revitalisation of Maitland Mall has been given a push forward with the Levee being officially approved. Maitland councillor’s voted unanimously at last week’s meeting for the $14.8 million development, which will create a link to the Hunter River and is said to be the key to the invigoration of the mall. Maitland Mayor, Peter Blackmore, said that he was confident the project would breathe life back into High Street. “This project is about creating a bustling lifestyle precinct that includes clusters of retail and dining outlets to build a ‘buzz’ about the area,” he said. “We need to accept that this area of Maitland will never be the same as it was 30 years ago and take this opportunity to create lasting change for our current and, importantly, future residents.” The project will be completed in two separate components. The first features opening the mall to traffic and creating a shared zone, and the second will focus on creating a river walk and a link between the two areas. At the council meeting ‘The Levee’ was described as the way forward for the city. “I’m proud of the decisions made by this Council to continue forward,” Councillor Blackmore said. MAITLAND MATTERS by Maitland City Council Mayor, Cr Peter Blackmore

A big, brave and bold decision for Maitland’s future

L

ast week Council approved the final design for the Levee project, which we are confident will breathe life back into our city centre. With the advent of shopping centres like those at Greenhills and Rutherford, we have to accept the High Street in Central Maitland will never be the same as it was back in 1987 – nor would we want it to be. Back then, before the Highway was developed, we had five sets of traffic lights and full coal trucks filling our city centre with smell and noise. Now we have clean air and a pleasant area in which to really create something wonderful – not only for the people who live here now, and not for the city’s shop owners, but for the future generations so that in 50 years’ time people have a greater understanding of what Council has done for them. It’d be all too easy to sit back, do nothing and let the mall die a slow

death; but to actually do something – and to do something big – that’s pretty brave. Do we have a 100 per cent guarantee this will be successful? Of course not. But if we work together I’m confident things can change. We’re looking to create a bustling lifestyle precinct that includes clusters of retail and dining outlets – not just one or two that sit either side of empty shopfronts. This cluster effect is what we see in busy city strips, where people come down to have a look because they know there’s plenty to choose from, plenty to look at and the experience of walking down the street is as relaxing as it is exciting, as people gather to catch up with friends and generally enjoy themselves. Of course it’s easy to be negative, there’s plenty of challenges still in our way. But this Council isn’t scared of a challenge and this is one we’ll take on with confidence and with a strong dedication to our city.

Hunter New England Health Public Health Doctor, Dr Kate Hardie, said winter is the peak season for gastro in the community. “Outbreaks can occur throughout the year but cases tend to rise during winter and early spring,” Dr Hardie explained. “We have already seen a number of outbreaks of norovirus gastroenteritis this season, particularly affecting aged care institutions and child care settings.” Dr Hardie said there are two things people can do to reduce the spread of gastro: take care with hand washing and stay home while they recover. “The best way to avoid viral gastroenteritis is by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and running water before handling and eating food. “It is also important to always wash your hands after using the toilet,” she said. “Alcohol-based hand gel is an effective alternative if soap and water are not readily available.” The elderly are particularly vulnerable to dehydration from a bout of gastro, so it iswith Hunter New England Health advising people not to visit people in hospitals or in aged care facilities if you suspect you have gastro. “Outbreaks in these environments can more readily occur with devastating consequences,” Dr Hardie explained. “This is why sometimes a local aged care facility or hospital will ask family members to delay visiting if an outbreak occurs so that the spread of the virus can be contained,” she said. Child-care centres and schools are also susceptible to outbreaks and babies are another vulnerable group, with warnings coming from schools and centres for parents to keep unwell children at home until they recover. “It’s important to remember that babies can become dehydrated very quickly with gastro,” Dr Hardie said. “Any baby less than six months old who has gastro should be taken to your GP or local emergency department immediately.” Gastro is a common illness which is caused by a number of different bugs. Viral gastroenteritis due to norovirus and rotavirus is more common in winter and early spring, but bacteria and food poisoning can also cause be responsible for causing gastro. “Some of these viruses, particularly norovirus, are highly infectious and can be spread very easily from person to person. They can also be spread through indirect contact with contaminated surfaces,” Dr Hardie said. Symptoms of viral gastro usually last between one and three days, but sometimes longer, and can include vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and loss of appetite can make a person lose more fluid than they can keep down. This may lead to dehydration, which needs to be treated immediately. Signs of dehydration include passing less urine than usual, increased thirst and dry mouth, sunken eyes, tiredness, and irritability. If dehydration cannot be rapidly corrected by increasing fluid intake, Dr Hardie advises that medical care should be sought. For more information on preventing gastroenteritis as well as tips for staying healthy this winter, visit the NSW Ministry of Health website at www.health.nsw.gov. au/Pages/default.aspx.

“As our cars run on high octane fuel, our bodies need to run on ‘high octane food’; if this is not achieved, the immune system becomes weakened and lowers immunity, which results in diseases like depression, anxiety diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, bowel problems like IBS, Crohns, leaky gut, and skin conditions,” Anton from McKay Biochemist Naturopathic Centre says. “Many of these conditions are easily diagnosed through state-of-art technology in computerised iridology and live blood analysis and are easily treated through herbal and natural remedies and nutritional advice. “If we eat healthy, high nutritional foods and eliminate exposure to all possible pollutants from highly processed food, preservatives and colorings, then we are giving our cells the opportunity to obtain optimum health.” By eating highly nutritional foods, drinking water, exercising regularly and getting quality rest, you will feel healthy and reduce your stress levels. Meet Your Health Professional 100 per cent natural: Experience the difference of natural, organically certified products on your skin

T

he Spa at Chateau Elan is excited to announce the exclusive launch of 100 per cent naturally-derived OrganicSpa products. Australian made in pristine Byron Bay, OrganicSpa has attained organic certification from the Australian Organic Food Chain (OFC). “Over the past year we have seen an increase in clients asking for natural organic products that are both affordable and effective,” said Sloan Misevski, manager of The Spa at Chateau Elan. “As an industry we are also seeing an increase in the number of guests suffering from certain skin allergies. So with this in mind, we started our search for the best organic skin care range available and knew it had to be 100 per cent Australian owned and made – so of course it had to be OrganicSpa.” Ms Misevski said she was surprised when researching organic skincare products to discover that most overseas organic certifying bodies aren’t independently approved or even state the ingredients must be 100 per cent naturally derived. “Most don’t even mind if products contain petrochemicals, dioxins or SLS.” With 20 years’ experience in the industry and having managed the renowned Golden Door Health Retreat – Elysia, Ms Misevski understands that good nutrition and regular exercise coupled with good skin care should play a part in everyone’s daily routine. The Spa at Chateau Elan is located on Vintage Drive, Rothbury. Call them on 4998 2500 or visit www.chateauelan.com.au. A senior moment

T

hey were the hottest senior citizens Florida had ever seen. In 1985, The Golden Girls burst onto the small screen and became a phenomenon that, despite the show ending its run in 1992, still continues to this day. Who could forget the zany and always hilarious adventures of housemates, former substitute teacher Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur) her mother Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty), lascivious southern belle Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan) and the naively hilarious Norwegian-American farm gal Rose Nyland (Betty White). Well, thanks to the magic of puppetry, yes puppetry, The Golden Girls are set to live again in the hilarious show ‘Thank You For being A Friend’. This show is brimming

with hilarious put downs, scandalous senior moments and cheesecake. Lots of cheesecake. The puppets in the show were handmade by the world famous Jim Henson Creature Shop while the play was written by Thomas Duncan-Watt (‘Good News Week’) and Jonathan Worsley (‘Winners and Losers’). Fresh from sold-out shows at Sydney’s Comedy Store, you might want to get your tickets ASAP because, like Blanche’s boudoir, it’s the hottest ticket in town. As an added bonus, cheesecake will be served prior to the show. ‘Thank You For Being A Friend’ will be on at the Civic Theatre Playhouse on Friday, June 21.

STAYING HEALTHY

FASHION FIXATION

by Elisha Stein

by KATHERINE TWEED

Nurture your social connections

S

ocial connections and positive relationships are strongly linked to our mental health and wellbeing. Throughout our lives, our relationships with others change, but they remain important. Being around people gives us the opportunity to share our experiences and to learn about the experience of others. Good relationships with family and friends help us to have fun and enjoy life, while other people can help us out with practical tasks and support us to reach our goals. We can grow at any stage of life – we just need to be open to new experiences. Building our knowledge and skills at a task we really enjoy can boost selfesteem, give us opportunities for social interaction, and improve our overall wellbeing. When setting new challenges or taking on new activities, choose things that are meaningful for you and fit with your interests and values. Be flexible. Try and think about your new goals in terms of things you want to add to your life, instead of in terms of things you are trying to avoid. Sites such as www. mentalhealth.asn.au can be helpful and

give helpful tips. Some ways to connect: • Offer to help – volunteer for an organisation you believe in or just help your friends move house. • Combine doing something for your physical health with a social activity to improve your mental health. For example, join a walking group. • Make spending quality time with people close to you a priority and keep up to date with what is happening in their lives. Try to be a good listener and let others share their stories without interrupting. Some ways to grow: • Ask someone you know to teach you something they do well or are enthusiastic about and that you’ve been interested in for a long time. • Write a list of what you value most and a list of what you spend time on. Do they match up? What could you do to spend more time doing these things? • Break a big task into smaller chunks. What’s the very first step you need to take? Write down a plan of where, when and how you’ll do this and how you’ll deal with any obstacles. Don’t forget a finish date.

Maternity what-not-to wear

F

ashion is often about hiding our lumps and bumps, and wearing what we can to make us look slimmer and healthier. However, there is an exception. Maternity wear has always been about wearing long, unflattering (but comfortable) ‘muu-muus’, but things seem to have changed in recent years. Women are flaunting their baby bumps in the hottest, on-trend maternity wear out, and it seems as though designers are putting more of an emphasis on trendy maternity wear. Perhaps they have realised that pregnant women still like to look great in the latest fashions, but I think that a lot of the attention on maternity wear has come from a number of famous pregnant women. Take the Duchess of Cambridge for instance; Kate Middleton is a prime example of a beautiful style icon not shy about her pregnancy. Kate always looks on-trend and beautifully classy in her long coats and fitted dresses. The key to the classy look is to buy

maternity wear that fits, that isn’t too tight and is modest. A winter coat over a mid-length dress, worn with stockings and some carefully chosen accessories, will give you the perfect classy, on-trend look this winter. Reality TV star and socialite Kim Kardashian is another celebrity who is showing that being pregnant is anything but a limitation when it comes to fashion. Kim has taken a much different approach to Kate, but she is just as much on trend. Kim has been cut a little bit of slack when it comes to some of her outfits (think that curtain-like dress that she wore to the 2013 Met Gala), but she always wears clothes with pride. Many of her outfits are as current as they come and would be worn by anyone, pregnant or not. Like Kim, you don’t have to lose your personal style just because your body has changed – you will find that many of the stores that you already shop at will have a maternity range. There are also great boutique maternity shops with fashionable ranges.

There’s no doubt that issues surrounding friendship and trust are very important. The planets are highlighting your horoscope area of social activities, which ensures that encounters with interesting people will yield new and enduring friendships. Although your mood has tended to vary between optimism and despair recently, the positive connection between Venus and Neptune will increase confidence.

A serious conversation with someone special in your life will renew an understanding between you. This, in turn, will be expressed as affection, as shared worries will bring you closer together. There should be a sudden and unexpected windfall for you or some other family member. Knights sent packing

Under 20s’ solid run halted by a strong Storm performance

T

he Newcastle Knights under 20’s suffered their first defeat in five rounds with a 36-8 loss against the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park on Sunday afternoon. Captain Adam Clydsdale returned to the number 9 after a stint in the first grade and shared hooker duties with Danny Levi. The young Knights went in to the half time break trailing by 16 points and were unable to claw their way back in to the game. The Knights found themselves with an opportunity just eight minutes into the first half after Christian Welch was penalised and put on report for a high tackle on five-eighth David Oakes. The team decided against taking the 2-points and were unable to crack the home side’s defence. The Storm opened the scoring eight minutes later with Richard Kennar sliding through the defence on the right edge. Matt McGahan converted and the Storm lead 6-0. McGahan then picked up the Storm’s second try of the match, converting it, to give his team a 12-point lead with 24 minutes left to play in the first half. The Knights hit back in the 31st

minute through Lachlan Shipard, who scored in the corner on the back of a penalty for a shoulder charge on Oakes. They were made to pay for a mistake on their own line with McGahan going over for a second, before extending the lead with a penalty goal after Dan Kilian was put on report for a high tackle.

The second half started just as the first half ended, with the Storm scoring first points. Cade Umaga dived over in the corner after receiving a perfect ball from McGahan. With McGahan’s conversion, the Storm led 26-4. The Storm crossed for their fifth try in the 50th minute, when Dane Chang showed strength to

beat Shipard to the line. McGahan converted from the sideline to give the Storm a 32-4 lead. In the 60th minute after making a break down their left side, the home side spread the ball to their right for winger Denny Solomona to score in the corner. The Knights hit back with a try to Pat Mata’utia, who scored in the left corner.
