t’s happened again. Last month, the Post reported on the insufficient fencing that separates Maitland Park and the New England Highway, which has seen two cars crash through in four years.

Make that three cars.

Concerns about the safety of park users have reared their head again, after a single vehicle accident on Thursday saw a car go through the fence near the Church Street roundabout. This follows a serious accident in 2009, and another in February 2012, when a ute barrelled through the fence, struck a light post and pulled up metres short of the children’s bike track.

Also of concern is the footpath that runs adjacent to the Roads and Maritime Services’ fence, which is made from wire only millimetres thick.

When reporting last month, the Post approached the Roads and Maritime Services for information on a potential upgrade and were told that one was scheduled to coincide with the works on the roundabout, but the fencing component would not take place until late 2014.

Last week the RMS was approached again to see if plans had changed in light of Thursday’s accident, but said that while the existing fence would be removed when work began, no work on safety fencing would be carried out before late 2014.

“The safety barrier is part of work associated with the eastern overpass at the Railway Station roundabout, which is scheduled to start in late 2014 and completed by late 2015, weather permitting.

The safety barrier cannot be installed before the eastern overpass work is carried out,” an RMS spokesperson said.

“There are no plans at this time to upgrade the remaining section of wire fencing along the New England Highway.”

However, Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker, said on Friday that she is concerned

Time to make bullying punishable by law

M

any of you would have seen or been made aware of the recent 60 Minutes story on the suicide of 15-year-old Chloe Fergusson after three years of sustained bullying.

Very few things get me fired up like hearing stories of bullying or seeing it happening.

What makes me angrier is that nothing ever seems to happen with regard to punishing those who inflict the torment on others.

I finished high school almost 20 years and bullying was rife. Officially, the school did not tolerate bullying and, for all I know, may have even had an anti-bullying policy.

However in reality the law of the jungle applied – join in the bullying or be bullied yourself.

Looking back now, I shake my head at some of the incidents, both physical and verbal, that occurred.

What I can’t comprehend is that bullying is not accepted in the workplace or in general society so why does it go unchecked in a lot of Australian schools?

To be fair, in recent years many schools have implemented antibullying policies but still kids suffer

Funding Our Future SEVEN YEAR RATE INCREASE PROPOSAL Maitland City Council has openly discussed with the community the financial challenges faced in sustainably delivering services into the future. Examination of all options for savings and revenue, and a significant period of consultation, has led to a proposal to increase total rate revenue by 8.35% per year for seven years – a cumulative 58.45% increase. This is 36.05% above the expected standard rate peg for the period and would be retained permanently in the rate base after the seven years. The rate increase would apply to the total rating revenue collected by Council and commence from the 2014/15 financial year.

aitland could lose $185 000 in CCTV funding under the Government’s axing of the National Crime Prevention Fund, a Coalition election promise.

The previous Labor government had awarded the funds in two separate grants to combat graffiti and anti-social behaviour at the Rutherford Shopping Centre, Maitland Train Station and in the Maitland Heritage Mall.

Six CCTV cameras were to be placed in Rutherford, and eleven between the mall and train station.

Minister for Justice, Michael Keenan, said that the Government is currently working through the arrangements required to fulfil election commitments.

“We are in the process of advising organisations who were promised funding under the national crime prevention fund not to make any financial commitments on the basis of commitments made by the former government.’’

Council has advised that they are yet to receive notification that they have lost any funding.

West Ward Councillor Henry Meskauskas, a strong proponent for CCTV in Rutherford, said he will be extremely disappointed if the funding is lost.

“If we lose this money it will be a slap in the face for everyone living in the area,” he said. “Here’s an opportunity for the welfare, safety and protection of the citizens, and to alleviate the crime, graffiti and malicious damage. This is an issue for everybody who lives here.”

The axing of the $40 million fund was announced as a Coalition promise the day before the September 7 federal election, to be replaced by the $50 million Plan for Safer Streets. The plan aims to reduce crime by installing CCTV and better lighting.

Expressway: Community Day

Cash doubt

ntertainment, displays, music and jumping castles will feature at a free community day to be held at Kurri Kurri on Saturday 23 November to celebrate the upcoming opening of the Hunter Expressway.

The community day will be held from 9am to 2pm. People can walk or ride bikes on a six kilometre stretch from the Kurri Kurri interchange to the rest areas at Buchanan.

The $1.7 billion Hunter Expressway project was jointly funded, with the Australian Government providing $1.5 billion and the NSW Government contributing up to $200 million.

The expressway will provide significant improvements in travel time and safety for motorists travelling in the Hunter region. “The corridor will reduce travel times between Newcastle and the Hunter Valley by up to 25 minutes,” a Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said. The event will be held on the Expressway alignment at the Kurri Kurri interchange with access to the site via Main Road. No parking will be available on the Hunter Expressway.

Free buses will be provided to take people to and from the event from designated parking areas at Rotary Park at Kurri Kurri, Heddon Greta Drive-in, Booth Park and Birralee Park (junior and senior). The buses will also run from Maitland Railway Station.

Disability access is available and will depart from Kurri Kurri High School.

e are exactly two thirds the way through Movember and by now our Mo Bro’s will belong to to one of two camps; the ‘a ferret just took up residence on my top lip’ group A or the ‘no, it’s not a vegemite smear, it really is my mo’ group B. Whichever ‘stache strength’ blokes find themselves in, you can be sure of one thing, it’s the ONLY month of the year novacastrian men give serious thought to their hair, be it facial or otherwise.

For us nova gals however, hair is a day to day obsession.

A local Yellow Pages rep friend of mine once said to me, ‘Wherever you are in the Hunter you are never more than five minutes drive from a hairdresser!’

It’s red rag to a bull stuff isn’t it, because right now you’re delighting in proving him wrong.

You don’t even have to nominate an extreme like Mount Sugarloaf or the Watagans because there are plenty of populated places where your roots will have grown out before you make the trek from your front door to theirs.

The point my mate was making, albeit a geographically challenged one, was that we are well and truly spoilt for choice when it comes to who we entrust our tresses to.

This is most definitely a good thing because as of next month I am without hairdresser.

Why? Because she is leaving me.

Honestly, a less confidant person would have started to question ‘is it me?’.

First I lose my on air-partner of 22 years and now the woman whose hands have trimmed, toned and teased my locks for nearly a decade decides to up scissors and leave me for....wait for it....a MAN!!!

Yep, packing her bags and heading north to start a new life with her soul mate.

Am I pleased for her? Of course - she deserves it .

Good graces aside though, am I a teensy-weensy bit miffed? You betcha bob and balayage I am! (Note to the short back and sides brigade; bob and balayage are hairstyles) A woman and her hairdresser is one of those special relationships forged over time, trust and tints.

That intimacy you share when you’re so physically close breaks down barriers prompting stories to be swapped and innermost secrets to be revealed.

Hair is often simply the added bonus to our six-weekly mental health check-ups and I am going to miss our sessions.

As I was sipping a coffee overlooking the Beach last Sunday mournfully contemplating my new single status and wondering how one hooks up with a new stylist, a thought struck me: finding the perfect hairdresser is not unlike finding the perfect partner.

You want honesty, someone to share a laugh with and the odd awesome head massage wouldn’t go astray.

Aside from the massage, my husband ticks all those boxes.

I’ve never enquired how skillful he is weilding a hair straightener but one thing’s for sure, he can grow a mo quicker than me (at this stage in life anyway).

So, until I meet ‘the one’ I will do like the mo-men are doing this month and grow wild.

s many as 66 Hunter manufacturing workers could be out of a job by Christmas with heavy machinery manufacturer, WesTrac, announcing sweeping staff redundancies as part of an organisational restructure made public last week.

Employees from the company’s Caterpillar machinery facility at Tomago will be made redundant as part of a nationwide workforce reduction of around 630 staff across the company at a cost of $13 million – with around 200 positions to be cut from NSW. This is in addition to 375 positions which were made redundant earlier this year across NSW and the ACT. Australian Manufacturers Workers Union organiser, Daniel Wallace, said they union was particularly concerned that Hunterbased apprentices could be among those laid off.

“WesTrac received $9 million in taxpayer money in 2007 to establish apprentice training facilities in Newcastle and Perth,” he said. “As a large company they have a commitment to help train apprentices.”

“We will be talking to apprentices to make sure they are not coerced into taking redundancy and that they know their rights if they want to continue with their apprenticeship.”

In a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange last Tuesday, WesTrac’s parent

n updated flood study of the Paterson River will soon be underway, after a $100 000 funding boost from the State Government.

The study will look at the impacts flooding will have on the land which will in turn contribute to land zoning determinations.

“Ultimately, it’s an exercise in flood modeling,” Maitland City Council’s Manager Infrastructure Strategy and Works Programming Chris McGrath said. “We’ll look at what the levels will be like and the velocities to develop a flood management plan.”

The last flood study of the river was conducted in 1997 and is now outdated.

Member for Maitland and Minister for the Environment, Robyn Parker, said that the study was essential to plan for a population boom. “Maitland and Port Stephens have high population growth rates which add to development pressures, and there is a need for a better understanding of the flood plains.

“Flooding in urban and rural NSW costs our economy about $250 million each day, and that’s apart from the severe emotional distress to individuals and communities that can result.”

Mr McGrath said that the information will build on the flood study done of the Hunter River two years ago.

The statement said efforts to improve efficiency and productivity within the company over the past 12 months had proven insufficient in light of “continuing

challenging marketing conditions”.

Mr Wallace said redundancies at WesTrac, at train manufacturer, UGL, as well as those rumoured at One Steel, would have a significant impact on confidence in the manufacturing sector throughout the region and called on local Liberal MPs to be more proactive in insuring the future of manufacturing in the Hunter.

t takes a lot to bring Maitland’s High Street to a standstill, but that is exactly what happened on Saturday, when the 308 Squadron Australian Air Force Cadets marched through the city.

The squadron was granted Freedom of Entry, a tradition that harks back to ancient Rome, which allows the military to enter a city ‘with swords drawn, bayonets fixed, drums beating, bands playing and colours flying’.

“In the days of old, cities wanted to identify friends or foes,” Ken Given, National Commander of the Australian Air Force Cadets, explained.

“Being granted Freedom of Entry shows that they are part of the community and the community welcomes their presence.”

40 cadets aged between 13 and 20 from the squadron, based at Rutherford, were presented with a scroll to allow them to march from the east end of the Heritage Mall, down High Street.

At the Victoria Street intersection they were stopped by Central Hunter commander, Superintendent Garry O’Dell, where they showed the scroll, before being allowed to continue, finishing at the Town Hall.

Maitland Mayor, Councillor Peter Blackmore, said it was a historic occasion.

“I’m very proud to witness this event,” he said. “Often all your hear is the bad things about young people, but today shows you the good things.”

This is the third time a unit has been granted Freedom of Entry to Maitland, and the first time the honour has been bestowed upon a cadet unit. The main aim of the Air Force Cadets is to better equip young people for community life by fostering initiatives, leadership, discipline and loyalty through training programs designed to stimulate an interest in a particular arm of the Defence Force.

Recognising outstanding achievements

O

ne of the most enjoyable parts of my role is that it takes me out into the community. I get to spend time with a diverse range of residents, doing wonderful things for the benefit of the city and the people who live here.

Sometimes the initiatives and the people behind them are lucky enough to gain media attention and we can see the good work they do. There are also some initiatives where people work tirelessly behind the scenes to help shape a better Maitland for us all. There are several awards programs that exist locally where members of the community can nominate a person that they believe has gone above and beyond.

of some worthy recipients at Council’s volunteer Christmas function coming up soon. Nominations for The Australia Day Awards that recognise outstanding achievements, which advance the values we share as Australians, are still open until Monday 25 November. Nominations are open for the City of Maitland’s Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Junior Citizen of the Year awards.

Nominees from any area, including the arts, schools, environment and community service can be recognised.

ewcastle City Council has caved to community criticism surrounding the management of its pools, announcing on Wednesday afternoon that it was backflipping on its previous stance and electing to extended the operating hours of the Beresfield and Stockton Swimming Centre to 5pm on weekends during the peak summer period.

General manager, Ken Gouldthorp, said Council had listened to pool users and decided to change its position.

However, he warned residents that if the new summer operating hours were to continue, pool patronage would have to increase.

“Future operating hours will depend on the response,” he said.

“To maintain these extended hours, we will need to see a spike in attendances over the next two and a half month, so I really want to encourage local communities to utilise their local pools.”

Beresfield Swimming Club president, Greg Skinner, called the decision a “small victory” for the people of Beresfield but still believed more could be achieved through closer consultation between Council and local stakeholders.

“I think it’s a bit like Neil Armstrong – it’s one small step for Council.”

“This is an acknowledgement that they are listening to us but it is not the end of the story by any means – now we have to get people into the pool.”

Mr Skinner suggested that Council could still save money on running costs by being more flexible with opening hours – staying open longer on hot days and closing early when weather conditions are unfavourable.

Newcastle City Council had previously elected to shorten the operating hours of the Beresfield and Stockton Swimming Centres, to close at 3pm on weekends as part of its cost saving 2013/2014 budget.

The new weekend operating hours began over the weekend and will remain in place until Australia Day, Sunday, January 26.

Operating hours from Monday to Friday remain unchanged.

former Australia’s Got Talent contestant has been added to the star-studded line-up for the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games.

Wheelchair aerialist, Paul Nunnari, who delighted viewers under the moniker, ‘The Other Superman’ in series seven of the hit reality talent show earlier this year, will join the likes of Human Nature, Marina Prior, Doug Parkinson, The McClymonts, Silvie Paladino, Darren Percival, Anthony Callea, Iva Davies and Marcia Hines, flying and spinning through Hunter Stadium as part of the two-hour extravaganza.

A silver medallist in the marathon at

the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, Mr Nunnari has been using a wheelchair since age 11 after he was hit by a car.

New heart attack scanning method

T

here has been a lot of controversy lately about the role of dietary cholesterol in heart disease and more and more research saying sugar has even more to do with it than fat intake.

Whatever you believe there’s no doubt heart disease is bad news but a new method of scanning the heart using high resolution images and radioactive tracers could help identify people at highest risk of a heart attack.

The test, developed by researchers at the University of Edinburgh, can identify dangerous fatty plaques in the heart’s arteries, which can lead to clots if they rupture.

The radioactive tracers seek out active and dangerous plaques, and when combined with high resolution images of the heart and blood vessels, can provide a picture of the main danger areas.

“I suspect not all plaques detected will cause a heart attack, but it could be useful for identifying high

risk patients who need aggressive therapy,” said cardiologist Dr Marc Dweck.

The findings could help doctors in deciding upon treatment for patients, whether it be prescription of drugs, suggesting lifestyle changes or offering medical procedures.

The new scan was tested on 40 patients who had recently had a heart attack, and highlighted the plaque which caused heart attacks in 37 of the patients, the study published in the Lancet Medical Journal revealed.

It is the first time a scan has identified danger zones, but further research is needed to discover if the detection of dangerous plaques before, rather than after, a heart attack can save lives.

Scientists will examine high-risk patients, including those who are about to have surgery.

Dr Dweck said if the scan or similar ones proved successful it would make a “massive difference”.

utting our hair in the hands of someone else is something that most of us do about once every month and to do it takes a lot of trust.

As much as I trust my hairdresser, there is not a single appointment that I haven’t gone into without feeling slightly nervous – yes, hair grows back but it only takes one slip up to ruin a hairstyle for a good month or so.

As someone who has never coloured my hair, I have never had to deal with the stress that comes with a colour appointment, however, I have lived through it with a couple of friends. The most recent case was with a colleague of mine who was preparing herself for a dramatic colour change; from black to red.

This young woman has changed her hair colour many times before and will often do it herself, taking the risk into her own hands, but this time decided to get the help of a professional.

The first time she came into the

office with her brand new hair, it looked fantastic; bright, vibrant and shiny – just what you would expect from a professional.

But the perks of the new hair stopped right there and then because after just one wash, the colour that she was assured would be permanent began to fade. The ends of her hair were significantly lighter and after a couple more washes, the ends were almost blond.

Not one to complain, my colleague raised the question with me: what should she do?

The answer we came up with was simple, your hairdresser is entirely responsible for your hair and if something goes wrong they have to accept responsibility and fix the issue.

My colleague did go back and had her hair re-coloured but even the second time, it wasn’t perfect.

She will never go back to the same place again and when asked about her advice to others, her response was simple: do your research!

omeowners and builders will soon be able to benefit from hassle free planning on development proposals thanks to a new online system being launched in Maitland.

The NSW Government’s Electronic Housing Code (EHC) allows development proposals, including home extensions, new homes, swimming pools and garages, to be prepared, lodged and tracked online.

Maitland City Council is among 30 Councils that have recently shared in $1 million in funding to help set up the system.

State Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker, said the new network brings the

NSW planning system into the twenty-first century.

“Local homeowners and builder will benefit from a faster, simpler and more userfriendly system,” she said.

“At the click of a button property owners can find out what is possible on their land and get fast-tracked approval for eligible project… without having to wade through hundreds of pages of complex documents.”

It is anticipated that 80 councils across the State will have adopted the EHC by June next year.

ith the X Factor Live tour set to roll into Newcastle this week, the show has been kicked into overdrive with the announcement that top ten contestant Barry Southgate will be joining the Newcastle and Sydney legs of the tour.

Already boasting the formidable talents of 2013 winner Dami Im and the remaining top five contestants Taylor Henderson, Jai Waetford, Third D3gree and Jordan Tolli, the addition of Southgate’s infectious personality and incredibly smooth vocal stylings is sure to make the show even more an attractive prospect.

TE caught up with Southgate last week and he said that he was over the moon that he was included in the tour.

“I didn’t expect it at all so when I got the call I was like “what the heck? This is awesome,” Southgate said.

“First they invited me to the Sydney show and that itself was exciting but then they called me two days later and said that they felt that I would be great for Newcastle as well and I was like “yes!”

I’m really pumped.”

“Just to get the chance to hang with the X Factor family as well, you know. I spoke to a couple of them yesterday and everyone is really excited – it’s going to be a huge party. I can’t wait.

Southgate, who under the guidance of mentor Danni Minogue rose to the X Factor top ten, said that the experience he gained on the show was invaluable.

“I wasn’t even going to initially audition for the show,” he said.

“At the last minute I decided to audition so I flew to Melbourne and it changed everything. It was hard though because I lost my second mum to cancer during boot camp and that was just impossible to go through – I don’t know how I did it but it really gave me the strength and that extra backbone to push and to make the most of the opportunity.

“I feel as though I entered the show a singer and I left as a performer.

“Danni was also really good – I know she was hard on me in the beginning but she’s only hard on people that she really believes in and she told me something that really changed my mindset. She said “stop trying to be so perfect. The worst that can happen is that you are going to make a mistake.”

Champion back to defend Surfest title in Newcastle

orld champion surfer, Joel Parkinson, has confirmed that he will return to Newcastle next year to defend his 2013 Surfest title, competing for the much coveted Mark Richards trophy in the Burton Toyota Pro event.

Currently ranked at number 3 on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Parkinson revealed the news last Wednesday, saying he was excited to be returning to Newcastle.

“Newcastle is such a big surfing city and Surfest captures that vibe really well,” he said.

“I’ve been surfing in the contest since I was a kid and it’s always been such a cool event because you’re made to feel so welcome.”

Parkinson took out the 2013 men’s event at Merewether Beach in spectacular fashion, defeating Brazilian rider, Alejo Muniz, with a final two-wave score of 15.43.

Surfest 2013 women’s champ, Dimity Stoyle will also return to the event in February next year to defend her Hunter Port’s Women’s Classic title.

Stoyle said winning the last year’s event helped her qualify for the ASP World Tour, where she is currently ranked number 2 in the ASP Women’s World Rankings, having recently placed second at the Pantin Classic Galicia Pro in Spain.

Isobel has been selected as a member of the Australian Schools Football Under 19 team to travel to the United Kingdom in 2014.

She played in the NSW All Schools Under 19 Girls Football team which travelled to Canberra to compete in the National Championships and remained undefeated in winning the championship.

Isobel represented the Combined High Schools in the Under 19 Age Group at both regional and state levels.

On the local scene Isobel played for the Lake Macquarie Team which remained undefeated throughout the playing of the NBN Women’s League.

For some years now Isobel has been very prominent on the girls’ Junior Representative Football scene and certainly is a bright prospect for future senior representation.

ewcastle Jets coach Gary van Egmond said a pre-season training visit to Sydney’s Holsworthy Army Barracks is starting to pay dividends after two successive victories.

“I don’t think the boys will ever do anything as hard as that,” van Egmond said after the 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar at a rain-soaked Hunter Stadium on Sunday afternoon. “It really did test them in a lot of ways.

“Full credit to the players. They’ve got a real strong mental resolve and it’s showing. The thing now is to make sure we are consistent. We need to keep our feet on the ground.

Emile Heskey entered the match in the 53rd minute and went close to scoring shortly after when heading a cross from Nathan Burns wide of the mark.

“With another week of training under his belt, I’d say he’d be getting pretty close to starting,” van Egmond said of the marquee striker.
