aitland may be on its way to getting its fi rst community garden, with Council currently considering a proposal by the Maitland Greens and local retailer, Organic Feast, to build one in East Maitland.

According to Maitland Greens Convener, John Brown, the group has put forward the median strip on William Street as a possible site for the garden. “Th is was the more practical site – it’s very

wide and it goes on forever, so you can have narrow garden beds and it’s a fairly quiet street,� Mr Brown said, while stressing that it is still very early in the process.

Despite already obtaining informal feedback from locals and a commitment of fi nancial backing from a “major institutionâ€?, the group is yet to garner solid community support for the garden. At this stage, they’re awaiting Council’s nod of approval before progressing any further. “Lake Macquarie has heaps [of community gardens], Newcastle, even Cessnock has one, so it’s not as if we’re reinventing the wheel,â€? Mr Brown said. “We’re not asking them for money [‌] we’re

just asking them virtually to offer some moral support, some backing for the project.�

Organic Feast employee, Andrew Fielding, said the retailer had been keen to get behind the project. “I think it’s the perfect way to strengthen community ties,� Mr Fielding said. “I know from talking with customers that it’s something that they’ll value and be keen to support.�

Mr Brown will now be door-knocking to gauge public consensus and locals can also provide their feedback by either popping into Organic Feast and fi lling out a form or emailing Mr Brown at jsbrown@live.com.au.

L

ance Armstrong’s ‘tell-all’ interview with Oprah Winfrey last week continues to dominate news headlines following its worldwide airing on Friday and Saturday.

Now that the disgraced cyclist has fi nally admitted to doping and using a range of illegal substances after years of swirling controversy, the public reaction has been fascinating.

From the condemnations by his detractors to the justifications of his supporters to the joke emails predictably now doing the rounds (there’s a great one of a public library in Sydney which put up a sign to say that his memoirs have now been moved to the fiction section), everyone has an opinion.

There’s certainly many shades of grey involved in the Armstrong story, especially when you consider the good he has done through his charity, Live Strong.

But what has become clear in this case as with scandals involving public figures down to domestic affairs and the like, is that it’s not always the original act but the ongoing, willful deception of others that creates the most damage and that is often hardest to forgive.

In this week’s edition, we preview a new exhibition in Maitland showcasing the best of local HSC students’ major works.

Staff car park opens at Maitland Hospital, freeing up spaces for others TRICIA MOROSIN

ne week after the air conditioning malfunction at Maitland Hospital, local MP, Robyn Parker, has officially opened a new 44-space staff car park on the hospital grounds, which she says will free up parking spots for visitors.

“Parking pressures have been a long saga at Maitland Hospital, just the same as at many hospitals,” Ms Parker admitted.

“Local residents have complained in the past because staff have been parking all day near their houses, so this will relieve some of that pressure.”

Acting General Manager of Maitland Hospital, Velda Sturt, explained the new parking would be particularly appreciated by staff who start later in the day and are “often competing with the visitors for car parking”, she said.

The feedback from those visiting the hospital also seemed to be positive, with one visitor, Alan Johnstone, saying that “usually when we do come, it’s hard to get a park but today it was pretty good”.

The response was less positive from Labor Councillor, Henry Meskauskas, who complained about the delayed opening of the car park, which he claims was ready to go – except for the boom gates – in November.

Instead of waiting for the boom gates to be installed, Mr Meskauskas said the

aitland’s Australian Museum of Clothing and Textiles (AMCAT) is currently holding an exhibition of the major works of 2012’s HSC students.

The works are textiles-based projects from Art, Drama and Design and Technology students.

The exhibition, ‘Textile Works’, features the works of students from Maitland Grossman High School, All Saints College, Francis Greenway High School, Callaghan College and Belmont High School.

AMCAT volunteer, Justine Malinowski, said that the exhibition gives students an opportunity to display their work to the public.

“So far we’ve had really rave reviews from visitors,” Ms Malinowski said.

The Australian Museum of Clothing and Textiles is located inside Maitland Gaol on John St, East Maitland and is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday or by appointment.

‘Textile Works’ will run until the end of February.

Admission is $3 and school groups are welcome.

ustralia Day is nearly upon us. On that day, many speeches will be made about the essence of being Australian.

Across the nation, speakers will try and distil what it is that characterises Australians: perhaps religious freedom, multiculturism, volunteerism, democracy and many other topics will be raised. Mateship will certainly make an appearance in most speeches.

Mateship has many facets, but what mateship is not is the misguided notion that it is acceptable for adults to buy and supply alcohol to minors.

It is a simple fact that alcohol and young people do not mix.

Young people are less able than adults to cope with the effects of alcohol, both physically and emotionally. The same amount of alcohol will have a far greater effect on the young body than that of an adult.

Young people by their very nature have had not had the life experience to be able to handle alcohol and what it does to them.

Goods mates who are over eighteen do not buy alcohol for their younger friends. Apart from the physical and emotional damage it can do to the young person, think of the consequences to the

person supplying the alcohol.

In NSW, a person who sells or supplies alcohol to a minor can face a $11,000 fi ne or 12 months in prison. On the spot fi nes can range up to $1100.

On New Years Eve, an 18-year-old who thought it was a great idea to give his underage mates a few beers at the Maitland fi rework display found out the consequences of his actions.

Obviously the role of parents is paramount in curbing underage drinking. Parents setting a good drinking example is a great fi rst step.

Communicating with and monitoring your children is important, as well as coming up with strategies to deal with peer group pressures.

It is not in the scope of this article to discuss parenting practices, but NSW Health and NSW Youth have many good tips on these topics. A quick internet search will give great advice.

On Australia Day, as with every other day, parents should know where their children are going and what they are doing.

Hopefully they will be celebrating our nation’s heritage, not drinking culture.

And mates, hopefully they will be doing the right thing by their friends and not giving alcohol to those who should not have it.

The fresh faced intern said she was excited to be on her fi rst day on the job, while undergoing infection control training. “It’s nice to be able to put five years of study and clinical into practice fi nally and [‌] be part of a team in the hospital, rather than just a student where you’re learning the ropes,â€?

ith Australia Day almost upon us and the flood of Citizen of the Year nominees now received, I have been taking some time to reflect on the past year and what it has meant for Maitland.

As the high calibre of nominations for 2012 would suggest, there is much to be proud of when you live in this great city.

Our Australia Day Ambassador, Maddi Elliott, has certainly had a year to remember. Not only did she attend her fi rst Paralympics representing our country, she came home with a handful of medals – and the title of our youngest ever Paralympic gold medallist.

Now home in Maitland, the young teenager graciously offered time out of her busy training schedule to help us celebrate what makes this country great.

Maddi will be there on Saturday when we host a number of fun Aussie activities, including a thong throwing competition, dunking

machine, free entry to Maitland Pool and pie, lamington and Jatz eating competitions.

Along with all the festivities and the announcement of Citizen of the Year, 25 people will officially become Australian citizens this Saturday at the Australia Day citizenship ceremony.

I always enjoy welcoming new citizens to Maitland and I think, as a community, it’s important we do our best to make newcomers feel at home here.

It must be a difficult decision to become an Australian, with most people feeling a strong loyalty to their home country.

Of course, no-one relocating to this country is expected to renounce their culture and customs. On the contrary, Australia is richer because of the contribution of people from other lands.

We are the lucky country though, beautiful weather and genuine people make Australia something worth celebrating – and I hope you can all join us in Maitland Park this Saturday.

Nominees named for top awards

he nominees for Maitland Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year have been announced.

Nominees in the Citizen of the Year category are Antoinette Griffiths of Rutherford, David Baldwin of Chisolm, Elizabeth Cornwall of East Maitland, Vicki Woods of Largs, Margaret Dunne of Thornton, Gloria Green of Millers Forest, Lesley Flannery of Cliftleigh, Max Roy of East Maitland and Nell and Doug Pyle of Bolwarra.

The Young Citizen of the Year nominees are Phoebe Ferguson of Rutherford, Amy Varley of Rutherford, James Hannah and Zac Baylis of Bolwarra Heights and Glen Oak respectively, and Ben Watt of Rutherford.

The winner of each category will be announced at Maitland City Council’s Australia Day celebrations, which are taking place in Maitland Park on Saturday.

Sky’s the limit: Future astronaut lands film role MELISSAH COMBER

hings are looking bright for Maitland-raised actor, Tim Moran, who has gained a part in a short fi lm, ‘Ruby’, to be fi lmed this month.

‘Ruby’ is about a mother, Abby, who is attempting to locate her daughter after she was forcibly removed as a child.

Mr Moran, who attended All Saints College, and was a member and tutor at Upstage Youth Theatre at Bolwarra, is playing Donni, the ex-boyfriend of Abby.

“Donni is a young guy who has made some mistakes,” he said.

“His past catches up with him as he is forced to try and answer for what has happened.”

He said that the fi lm aims to highlight serious issues in the community, and

stems from the forced adoptions that have taken place worldwide.

Th is is Mr Moran’s fi rst short fi lm, having previously done commercials for IKEA and ‘Masterchef’ and promotional work for Ecco Shoes.

“Th is is an exciting opportunity for me,” he said.

“It is still early days but the whole experience is enlightening. Everyone involved seems so passionate to have the story told.”

Maitland sisters Emma and Sarah Conroy are also involved with the fi lm, as a producer and head of wardrobe, respectively.

Mr Moran is known to readers of the Post, having won the opportunity to fly to space with Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, in 2015.

olice are urging businesses in the Hunter region to be on the lookout for counterfeit $50 and $100 notes.

Th is year alone, officers have received reports of 17 separate incidences where counterfeit notes were passed to small businesses within the Hunter, Lake Macquarie and Central Coast areas.

The notes have been used to purchase goods from a variety of locations including licensed premises, supermarkets and fast food outlets.

Business owners are urged to be vigilant when receiving $50 and $100 notes as payment and to check what they are handed.

Australia’s banknotes have a range of security features that can be used to check if they are genuine.

The banknote should be printed on polymer (plastic) and the clear window should be part of the banknote, not an addition.

Photographers of all ages and levels of experience are being asked to submit up to four photographs each, using any technique, which captures the ability of something or someone.

Mai-Wel Group CEO, Pennie Kearney, said the competition allows people to indulge their creative side. “Regardless of ability behind the lens, this competition provides a unique opportunity for people to get creative through a fun and thought provoking community based activity,� Ms Kearney said.

Prizes will be awarded in the Open and Student Categories, with a fi rst prize of a $1000 savings account for the Open category and a $500 savings account for the Student category, from the Greater Building Society.

Framing and printing vouchers will also be up for grabs for second place and highly commended winners together with a $500 cash prize for the ‘Commercial Adaptability Award’.

t’s difficult to believe that it has been more than 17 years since Sydney indie rock geniuses You Am I released their seminal slab of sonic loveliness ‘Hi Fi Way’ – let alone 20 years since Tim Rogers and co strummed their first chords in a Castle Hill garage. Time certainly flies when you’re having fun.

The band may’ve been a little quiet of late with their last album (self-titled) dropping in 2010, but that doesn’t mean they’re slowing down, as Newcastle audiences will discover when You Am I grace the Cambridge stage for the first time in two years. “We always look forward to getting back to Newcastle as the crowds have always been really great,� drummer Russell ‘Rusty’ Hopkinson told TE. “Tim [Rogers] has always said that Newcastle was one of the first places to embrace the band so it holds a very special place for us. “We hadn’t played together for a little while but, over the festive season we played some good shows, like the Mooloolaba Festival on New Year’s Eve, so we’re definitely well and truly back in gig mode.�

While some of their contemporaries might baulk at any ‘elder statesmen’ tags that might be afforded them by music wags et al, Hopkinson said You Am I kind of revelled in the luxuries that

such status affords – most notably not being pressured by record execs to get into the studio and produce the next big thing. “I think we’ve earned the right to not really have to bother about schedules,�

Hopkinson said. “A lot of bands get pressured to do this and that... the amount of times we’ve had some label guy saying that we need to contemporise our sound – and the wheels keep falling off. “I think we realised about ten years ago that we didn’t have to keep bashing our heads against a wall to ‘make it’. “That said, at the moment we are talking about getting back into the studio, so I’d say we should have something by the end of the year. We’re just having a hell of a lot of fun.�

Anyone who saw You Am I in the halcyon days of Sound As Ever and Hi Fi Way can attest to their [particularly

Rodgers’] visceral live shows that mixed equal parts ‘60s pop sensibilities with a kind of pissed off cynicism associated with the then huge grunge movement.

However, Hopkinson said that these days, they may have mellowed a tad. “We were a pretty bloody angry band in those days,� he said.

aren O’Shea has been mesmerising audiences with her amazing vocal talent since an early age and has been treading the boards since leaving school.

From kicking off with her first group – The Sublimes – a 50s and 60s-inspired rock and roll outfit to the energetic funk of Sydney Sound Machine and the eight-piece outfit The Temple of Groove covering the likes of James Brown, Earth Wind and Fire and the Brand New Heavies, not to mention working as a backing vocalist for legend Richard Clapton, there isn’t much O’Shea hasn’t accomplished.

ewcastle outfit 24 Hours was formed by James Body and John Shelton when a lifeline was sent out to the boys to come and help finish 10 gigs that the band had on the books, and with only had 24 hours to pull it off, their new moniker was born.

24 Hours has been playing as a five piece for the last five years when Dave Realm joined the show. Now, 10 years on, 24 Hours have been able to breathe life back into some old rock classics, while still being able to stay in touch with some of the latest rock songs and do them justice.

This is one band that must b seen to see how the boys feed off each other to produce an energetic show that will leave you talking for days to come.

Protect yourself in the sun

A

n Aussie summer is all about fun in the sun. Th is time of year, people are spending long days outside whether it be on holidays by the beach or outside at home in the garden. But this beautiful sunshine can have horrible consequences for some people especially, during heatwaves.

Your body will become stressed by the heat when it becomes dehydrated and therefore can’t cool itself enough to maintain a healthy temperature.

Normally, sweating helps to maintain a healthy body temperature by increasing heat loss through evaporation. However, if you become dehydrated, you can’t sweat as much and your blood becomes concentrated, causing electrolyte imbalance and impairment in organ functioning.

All organs can be affected, including the hypothalamus in your brain where temperature is normally controlled.

When your core body temperature rises above 40.5, the body’s internal systems can begin to shut down, causing heat stroke. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can develop rapidly.

Symptoms and warning signs vary from person to person but may include very high body temperature, red, hot and dry skin with no sweating, dry swollen tongue, a rapid pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, delirium, collapse and unconsciousness.

If you are in a hot climate and doing vigorous exercise on a hot day or are unable to stay in shade, keep a look out for any of these symptoms or even better, prevent it by avoiding extreme temperatures.

Take time to check on your elderly family or anyone you are concerned about as they may need your help to cope with the heat.

Of course, never leave anyone or any pets in a closed parked car. If you are at home, you could also have cool showers and turn the air conditioner on.

If you notice signs of heat exhaustion, immediately try to cool the person down by wetting them and fanning. Offer cool water. Place ice packs in areas such as the armpits and groin and forehead.

Take it seriously and call for medical help whenever you are concerned.

Double denim rules

N

ormally, when I think of denim, my mind wanders to my favorite pair of jeans, sitting in my wardrobe and waiting for winter to arrive, but denim in summer 2013 is proving to mean something very different.

Th is season, denim is stepping out into our streets in force; the heavy fabric is no longer reserved for jeans and shorts, it can be found fashioned into dresses, overalls, onesies, shirts, jackets, crop-tops and even swimwear.

Not only can you fi nd a denim example of every kind of clothing item imaginable, you can fi nd denim trimmed shoes and accessories.

What is more surprising than this unexpected overhaul of denim into our stores for summer, is that the ‘look’ for the season is encouraging us to wear denim on denim; a style that briefly made a comeback in 2010.

The great thing about the ‘double denim’ look is that most of us will already have the ingredients in our wardrobes to make up the perfect denim outfit however.

But be warned: it doesn’t take much to turn a stylish, double denim outfit into a nasty overload of blue; leaving

you washed out and looking like you stepped straight off a ranch in Texas.

Luckily, a few simple guidelines can help you to stick to the stylish side of double denim.

Contrast is the key: possibly the most important thing to remember when trying the double denim look is to keep contrast in the equation.

Stay away from wearing blue denim pieces that are the same or even similar tones – opt for one part dark and the other light.

Darker denim has a great slimming effect so use it on the bottom.

orthern NSW Football CEO, David Eland, has met with a representative from the Asian Cup to discuss the potential for a Northern NSW Football facility to host an international team during the 2015 Asian Cup competition, being held in Australia.

Mr Eland met with his counterpart from the Asian Cup, CEO Mark Falvo, at the site of the new grounds at Speers Point last week.

Northern NSW Football is hoping to build an $11 million facility on the current site, having already committed $4 million to the project.

Lake Macquarie City Council will make up the shortfall, having lodged an application for $7.3 million from the State Government.

Mr Eland said that he is hoping for a decision to be made on the funding in February, and, if all goes to plan, construction could get underway as soon as April.

“Our construction schedule for the new facility is perfectly aligned with the 2015 tournament.

“We aim to have the facility up and running by July 2014.”

side football courts, a new administration building, training facilities and car parking, “These are the types of facilities you need to host these kinds of events,” Mr Eland said.

The Asian Cup will see 16 teams playing 32 matches over 23 days. Australia, Japan, North Korea and South Korea have already qualified.

“Th is is a coming of age for football in Australia,” Mr Falvo explained.

“It’s a great opportunity to leave an enduring legacy for the game.”

It is estimated that the Asian Cup will draw 500,000 spectators, including 45,000 international visitors and 5,000 media, injecting over $20 million into the economy.
