he expansion of Maitland Private Hospital has been given the go ahead by the Hunter Central Coast Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) on the condition that more parking spaces are included in the plan.

The JRPP voted unanimously to grant conditional approval for the development but recommended that an additional 36 parking spaces be included.

Maitland councillor Robert Aitchison was

one of a number of councillors who raised concerns about the lack of parking in the plan and how it would affect residents when the development application was presented to Council last month.

Cr Aitchison said he was “very pleased� with the outcome. “I stood up in Council and said something needed to be done for residents and it was. “At the end of the day, it’s a win for residents and a great outcome.�

JRPP chairman, Garry Fielding, said the panel felt the parking issue needed to be addressed. “We felt the current parking on site was quite inadequate and with the proposed

development, we didn’t feel it would be appropriate to approve the plans without additional parking,� he said. “There were quite a number of submissions made by residents concerned about overflow parking and these were quite legitimate concerns considering the nearby Hunter Valley Grammar School has its own parking concerns.�

He said the additional parking would more than likely be provided on a raised parking area adjacent to the eastern portion of the hospital.

The development includes the construction of a two-storey consultants suites building and a new 25-bed medical and mental health ward.

unday marked White Ribbon Day, the international movement to prevent violence against women.

Our journalist, Amelia Parrott, was one of 200-odd people who participated in the Hunter event - a breakfast in Newcastle on Friday morning.

In attendance at the breakfast event was Jon Chin, CEO of the Hexham Bowling Club and the Hunter’s White Ribbon Day ambassador, as well as local MPs and business and community members.

One of the speakers on the day was Deanne Slee.

Mrs Slee spoke about domestic violence from a deeply personal perspective: having experienced abuse fi rst as a child at the hands of her father, and later in life at the hands of a partner.

Mrs Slee told her assembled crowd that it’s not enough to overcome the betrayal of abuse, it is also necessary to share the stories with the next generation, in the hope of preventing the cycle from continuing.

Th is is a message we hear over and over again from our community leaders and hints at Ghandi’s oft-quoted saying: Be the change you want to see in the world.

From taking a taxi instead of getting behind the wheel after a few drinks, to giving a discarded animal love and a new home - be the agent for change and you might just inspire someone along the way.

Students swap pens for skipping ropes as part of health program TRICIA MOROSIN

tudents at Francis Greenway High School have swapped their pens for skipping ropes, to take part in the Jump Rope for Heart Outreach Program.

The Heart Foundation has joined forces with rail freight company QR National, who has sponsored the school’s participation in the health and wellness program.

PDHPE teacher, Jean Bull, said the year seven students taking part in Jump Rope for Heart were responding positively to the program.

“They’ve loved it; they’ve really got into it,” Mrs Bull said. “Some of the students who would never have got into it before are up and […] they’re quite prepared to do it and have a go.”

The sponsorship from QR National has provided Francis Greenway High School with the equipment and resources to deliver Jump Rope for Heart.

“QR National is one of Australia’s largest employers and we run a lot of programs in our workplace to get people thinking about their overall health,” QR National’s Ivanka Andrews said.

“Our employees live and work in this community, so it’s great to be able to get involved at such a grassroots level by supporting the school as they undertake Jump Rope for Heart.

Domestic abuse survivor speaks out at White Ribbon Breakfast AMELIA PARROTT

lose to half a million Australian women were victims of violence last year and more than 70,000 experienced this violence from a current or former partner.

The statistics are harrowing and sadly are worse for indigenous women with 20 per cent having experienced physical violence in the last 12 months, compared to 7 per cent of non-Indigenous Australian women.

However, efforts were made to shed light on this issue at a breakfast for White Ribbon Day last Friday.

White Ribbon Day coincides with International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and is held annually on November 25.

Domestic violence survivor, Deanne Slee, shared her story of domestic abuse with around 200 guests who were present at the event.

As a young girl, Mrs Slee was sexually abused by her father and witnessed acts of domestic violence within her home.

As an adult, she became involved in a relationship with a man who physically abused her.

Now happily re-partnered, Mrs Slee said she wanted to share her story to help future generations of women. “It’s about saving a younger generation

Random Breath Testing: 30 years of saving lives

T

his year marks the 30th anniversary of the introduction of Random Breath Testing in NSW. During that period, the number of road deaths with a contributing factor of alcohol has fallen from 379 in 1982 to 70 deaths in 2011.

Th is dramatic reduction shows the power of driver education, the change in the public’s attitude to drink driving and commendable work of the NSW Police enforcing the laws.

Not withstanding these efforts, last year, 24,000 motorists were prosecuted in NSW for driving with an illegal blood alcohol concentration.

Since I am bombarding you with statistics, I will also tell you that last year, police officers carried out more than 4.5 million random breath tests across the State.

With the Central Hunter Police Local Area Command having a very active Highway Patrol section, a great number of those tests were within our local area.

With Christmas around the corner

and the start of the festive season upon us, now is a time to be thinking of what approach you will take this year to getting home after having a few drinks.

I hope it will be the sensible one that will ensure you still have a licence, a job, loved ones, no criminal record and a clear conscience come the New Year, because drink driving has serious consequences.

To me, those consequences were attending a motor vehicle collision in a small rural town in the period leading up to Christmas where a young man who had had too much to drink and was going too fast struck a tree, killing his girlfriend, a friend and leaving yet another friend with permanent injuries.

The driver survived, nearly without a scratch, but he spent five years of his early manhood in prison and left a trail of destruction through the tightknit town.

By all means, enjoy yourself this year, but before you drink and drive, think of the consequences.

he right forearm of St Francis Xavier visited the Hunter on Friday as part of a national Pilgrimage of Grace.

Hundreds of worshippers, including school children from St Francis Xavier, Hamilton, visited the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newcastle to see the treasured holy relic.

Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle, Bill Wright, led the Liturgy of Reception and welcomed the relic, which had arrived in a hearse and was guarded by security.

Bishop Wright said he wasn’t surprised by the turn out, with one woman driving up from Sydney to view the treasure. “It’s a chance to feel a connection to

the real person and [feel] his presence in a heightened sense,� Bishop Wright explained. “So it’s more about Saint Francis Xavier himself than it is the relic.�

Year of Grace Coordinator, Louise Gannon rsj, explained that it was extremely rare for the relic to leave the Gesu in Rome, the mother church of the Society of Jesus, where it is under the care of the Jesuits, the order co-founded by St Francis. “Th is is a significant relic providing all Christian people with a unique opportunity to reflect on the story of St Francis, who was a great missionary,� Sr Louise said. “His right forearm is the arm with which he baptised and blessed many thousands of people, and tended and held the sick and dying.�

HIV-positive Hunter resident shares his story ahead of World AIDS Day TRICIA MOROSIN

S

aturday, December 1 is World AIDS Day and a time to remember those in the community living with not only the disease, but the stigma associated with it.

At any one time, there are 500 Hunter residents living with HIV and one of those people is local resident Robert, who has asked us not to release his full name.

He was diagnosed in 1994 after the death of his partner from AIDS, however he believes he was infected in 1988.

“I hadn’t been tested until after my partner died,” Robert said.

“I felt like he had enough to deal with […] without the guilt or the thoughts that he might have infected me and whether he had or not is not, in my mind, even to this day 20 years on, an issue.

“It’s just, it happened.”

At the time, Robert was told he had around six months before opportunistic infections would hit him; however he was fortunate to be at the cusp of new treatments.

“As new drugs came out and the other ones were failing, you just kept going from one trial to the next, to keep yourself alive,” Robert said.

The un-trialed drugs have since taken their toll on Robert, who remains grateful for their life-saving results, despite the

alls continue for the State Government to provide the necessary funding to re-open the public eye clinic at John Hunter Hospital.

Wallsend MP, Sonia Hornery, said the Minister was aware “back in February that resources were not available” and it is “disappointing that the Government do not see Hunter eye patients as a high priority”.

“I wrote to the Minister recently when [people] advised me that they were being turned away from the clinic and have now sought the Minister’s urgent intervention to provide funding to re-open the public eye clinic,” Ms Hornery said.

Hunter patients have been left with two options, according to Ms Hornery – either travel to Sydney or pay a large gap in Medicare. She spoke of an elderly couple from Dungog, who can’t drive and had to catch four trains to get to the eye clinic in Sydney.

“We’re looking at $500,000 [to re-open the clinic], which really is a drop in the bucket for the Health budget,” she said.

John Hunter Hospital General Manager, Michael Symonds, said that around a year ago, the ophthalmologist visiting medical officers who provided the outpatient clinic care were “unwilling to continue without considerable additional resources, which

we were not able to provide”.

They estimate the closure will impact around 700 patients and, according to Mr Symonds, staff are now contacting these patients to determine if they still need care and discuss other treatment options available.

“Today, patients can continue to

see the ophthalmologists who ran the former clinics, other local specialists and optometrists, for routine care in their private rooms or offices as Medicare patients,” Mr Symonds said.

ith 150 stalls – the most number yet – this year’s Olive Tree Market’s Christmas Market is shaping up to be a one-stop shop to buy handmade Christmas gifts.

Organiser, Justine Gaudry, said the record number of stallholders promises to offer a range of unique, bespoke items to shoppers.

Last year, over 3,000 people attended the event and organisers from Real Life Church are expecting similar crowds this year.

The event is proudly supported by Maitland City Council and I will be there to help spread the Christmas cheer.

The festival itself starts at 3pm and the concert at 7pm.

While Christmas is a time for celebration, it’s also a time to think of those less fortunate than ourselves – those who might not sit down to a hot meal on the big day, or those who may be forced to spend the day in a hospital bed.

You will notice plenty of charities out and about collecting for these people and I encourage you to give generously.

hristmas is almost upon us again – although I, for one, can hardly believe it!

It’s always great to watch Maitland come together as a community at this special time of year. Tomorrow, the Christmas in the City celebrations start, with the annual Diners Markets, free Santa photos on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings plus a chance for shoppers to win a $5,000 holiday package from Harvey World Travel.

As a Council, we are very much in support of local people spending their Christmas dollars locally – particularly with all the great boutique shops in the City Centre.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas without the sounds of carols ringing through the city.

One of my favourite memories as a young boy is listening to my father sing White Christmas to my mother.

It’s always stuck with me as one of the songs of not only the festive

NOTIFICATION OF CHANGES TO SERVICES

In accordance with the conditions imposed by Licence Number 10393 issued by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) pursuant to the Pollution Control Act, 1970 notice is hereby given that Maitland City Council intends to treat infestations of Alligator Weed along parts of the Hunter River from the Luskintyre Bridge downstream to Raymond Terrace and the Paterson River from the intersection of the Hunter River upstream to Paterson. This will take place from and including 28 November 2012 to 5 December 2012 weather conditions permitting.

The herbicides Brushoff (active ingredient Metsulfuron methyl) will be used in the treatment of the Alligator Weed infestations in accordance with Permit Number – PER10653. The work will be carried out by qualiďŹ ed Council staff.

Under the terms and conditions of the EPA Licence the following warning is provided to residents in the treatment area: ‘not to use, drink or swim in the water during the period of treatment’.

Council operating hours and services will be changed for Friday, 7 December 2012, due to our Annual Picnic Day. StafďŹ ng levels may be limited at the ofďŹ ces or facilities that are open, and residents are asked to take this into consideration if attending these points of service. Lifelong love: Author visit to encourage kids to read

T

he 2012 Prime Minister’s Literary Award winner and acclaimed children’s author, Frances Watts, will visit the Hunter this week as part of a country-wide tour to celebrate the National Year of Reading.

Ms Watts, who is a national ambassador for the year-long campaign that aims to inspire a love of books, stressed the importance of reading to children ahead of her Hunter visit. “I was lucky to be born into a bookloving family,� she said. “I wouldn’t be a reader today, and I certainly wouldn’t be a writer, if I hadn’t been introduced to many wonderful books as a child. “With every book we put in a child’s hands, we have the chance to awaken in that child a lifelong love of reading.

“That’s why it is such a privilege to be part of the National Year of Reading...It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with kids over books and, more importantly, to make kids feel connected to books.�

Born in Switzerland before moving with her family to Australia, Ms Watts worked as a bookseller and editor for nearly ten years before she began writing.

No stranger to winning awards, including three previous Children’s Book Council honours, Ms Watts took out this year’s Prime Minister’s Literary Award with her picture book, ‘Goodnight, Mice!’.

Frances Watts will be reading to primary school-age children at Kurri Kurri Library on Thursday, November 29 from 2pm.

Search begins: Proposals invited for hospital site

“I know the community is keen to see the planning work for future health services in this region progressing and it’s great to see the Hunter Valley Health Services Planning Project discussing options with clinicians and the community,� Mrs Skinner said. “Community leaders, health organisation, doctors, nurses and allied health professionals are all being involved in the process to highlight the type and range of services required for any new hospital.�

Initial consultation to inform the clinical services plan is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with the fi nal draft plan to be completed by mid-2013.

The Hunter Valley Health Services Planning Project is a collaboration between Hunter New England (HNE) Health and the Local Health District Board, the NSW Ministry of Health and Health Infrastructure.

he search for a site for the proposed new hospital in the Maitland region got underway this week, with an Expression of Interest (EOI) process inviting proposals from public and private landholders.

An announcement about the EOI process was made by NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, and Maitland MP, Robyn Parker, last week.

Ms Parker explained that the process will take into account a range of factors including accessibility and the proximity to other services in the region. “Th is is a multi-layered process that involves assessing access, transport links, proximity to other health services and the availability of a specialist workforce,� Ms Parker explained. “The EOI will be issued [this] week and the preferred site is to be identified by mid-next year.�

Funding to the tune of $20 million has been allocated by the State Government to the project through the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund.

Countdown to launch Mai-wel clients gear up for the launch of a new CD of original songs AMELIA PARROTT

lients and staff from Maitlandbased disability services organisation, Mai-Wel Group, have been clocking up hours on stage and in the recording studio as they gear up for the launch of their new CD next week as part of Maitland City Council’s celebrations for International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

Over the past six months, a group of clients from Mai-Wel Group’s Moving On program have written and recorded four original tracks to be launched at Maitland Town Hall on Monday.

Nineteen-year-old Kate Dehaart hoped the CD would inspire people.

“I hope the CD inspires people with disabilities so if they are feeling down they can listen to it and it will make them feel happy,” she said.

The group is also excited about performing at the event, admitting they would probably have a few butterfl ies on the day.

Mai-Wel support worker, Tracey Brasington, said the message of the event is about acceptance.

“We’re all about advancing the lives of people with disabilities,” she said.

“The theme of this year’s event is removing barriers and creating inclusion and an accessible society to all.”

he upgraded Margaret Johns Skatepark was officially opened earlier this month by Hunter MP, Joel Fitzgibbon, in front of an enthusiastic young crowd.

The revamped park is part of a concerted effort to improve youth facilities in the Cessnock area, with work being funded through the Federal Government’s Economic Stimulus Plan in conjunction with Cessnock City Council.

“The Government provided $120,000 and Cessnock City Council contributed $100,000 to upgrade facilities as part of [an] investment to support jobs in the local economy, and deliver long-lasting benefits to the local community,” Mr Fitzgibbon explained, highlighting the 15 jobs that were created during the construction phase of the project.

“Th is funding was delivered to Cessnock City Council from round three of the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program – a key part of our Economic Stimulus Plan,” he said.

The Post reported on the push by several locals to improve youth facilities in the area back in October, including Cessnock councillor, Cordelia Burcham, who has been advocating for change.

A

t 72 years of age, you could be forgiven for thinking that UK pop music megastar, Sir Cliff Richard, would want to put his feet up and enjoy his autumn years and the fruits of his incredible 54 years in the oft-fickle world of pop.

However, Sir Cliff is definitely one artist to whom you wouldn’t want to apply the term autumnal – he is the very epitome of the evergreen entertainer.

“I’m currently in my house in Barbados,” he told TE. “It’s a typical day here – it’s nice and sunny and I’ve just been to the garden centre, done a spot of gardening and spent 45 minutes in the gymnasium and spend an hour-and-a-half playing tennis.

“For me, maintaining the energy levels and passion for what I do isn’t really hard because I absolutely love it – so it’s all about eating correctly and exercising because, at the end of the day, I really don’t want to look like some old hasbeen.”

If the sales of his iconic calendars are anything to go by (his 2011 calendar sold more than 4 million copies), hasbeen doesn’t enter into the equation.

“I think I’ve been blessed with really good genes,” he mused.

“My mother looked incredibly young right up until she got dementia and wasn’t able to look after herself – I think my sisters and I are very lucky to have inherited her genes.”

After a critically-lauded Australian tour in 2010 with his original and iconic back-up band, The Shadows, Sir Cliff will be returning to our shores to prove, once again, that he’s still got it on his ‘Still Reelin’ and Rockin’ tour.

Considering, though, that his first single, ‘Move It’, was released in 1958 and he has since amassed more than 250 million global record sales and more than 130 hits in the UK charts (not to mention 25 Aussie top tens), does choosing a set list for a greatest hits show like this prove problematic?

“It really is a nice problem to have,” he explained.

“But with a 54-year career, it becomes impossible to do absolutely everything in one night, but what I will say is that people can expect to know

absolutely everything – they can expect ‘Devil Woman’, ‘Living Doll’, ‘Move It’, ‘Wired for Sound’, the duet I did with your lovely Olivia Newton John, ‘Suddenly’, which I’ll be singing with the very talented [X-Factor contestant] Suzie Furlonger – so everyone will know absolutely everything.

“I just love coming to Australia, though – when you tour in Europe it’s always winter and everyone has colds and it just becomes a hassle but when we’re in Australia it’s always summertime so we get to play tennis all the time – it’s great.”

That’s not to say there won’t be some surprises. Sir Cliff said he was currently working on a new album of rock and roll standards in Nashville

including The Four Voices’ ‘Sealed With A Kiss’, Dion’s ‘Dream Lover’ and Chuck Berry’s ‘Reelin and Rockin’’ – all of which are likely to get an airing in the Aussie shows.

Born Harry Webb in Lucknow, India, Sir Cliff changed his name at the insistence of his, then, manager Harry Greatorex who said the name ‘Cliff’ was synonymous with rock.

Britain’s answer to the US rock and roll craze, Sir Cliff quickly became a fixture on the UK hit parade with such classic tunes as ‘Move It’ (which John Lennon cited as the first British rock and roll record), ‘Living Doll’, ‘The Young Ones’, ‘Bachelor Boy’ and ‘Summer Holiday’, yet he said he never imagined in his wildest dreams that his career would endure for so long.

“I never, ever thought I’d be doing this for as long as I have,’ he said.

“When I was first signed I didn’t think I was going to live to 50, let alone have a 50-year career.

“I don’t think it was until around 1968 when I released an album with The Shadows called ‘Established ’58’. You see, when we started, we were kind of just written off as being one hit wonders – you know, one of those here today, gone tomorrow outfits. Anyway, I was looking at that record and I realised, ‘Wow, I’ve been doing this for 10 years now – maybe I’m not a one hit wonder after all’. I was quite amazed.”

Could you give me some ideas to give me a boost?

Low energy is one of the main complaints I hear from my patients.

Here are my top ten tips: 1. Have a blood test to check for anaemia and low thyroid function. Both these conditions will make you feel tired and washed out.

2. Eat more protein â&#x20AC;&#x201C; good quality protein such as eggs, fish, lean beef, lamb, pork and chicken give you sustained energy, much more than carbohydrates like bread, rice and pasta. Try and have some protein at breakfast, lunch and dinner and you will feel the difference.

3. Get enough sleep - if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not getting enough sleep on a regular basis (8 hours a night), you are building up a sleep debt.

In other words, your body is getting more and more tired as the days go by. If you suffer from sleep problems or insomnia, try using herbs such as chamomile, hops, kava or valerian.

4. Drink 2 litres of water every day â&#x20AC;&#x201C; believe it or not, simply being dehydrated makes you feel tired!

The Knight’s 2013 campaign kicks off at Hunter Stadium on Monday, March 11 when they face West Tigers.

he Newcastle Knights took to their fi rst pre-season training with gusto last week, hoping to improve their fortunes in the 2013 season, the second under the tutelage of supercoach, Wayne Bennett.

There was much fanfare and speculation surrounding the start of the Knights 2012 season, largely around the arrival of Bennett, but also for the return of prodigal Knights, Timana Tahu and Danny Buderus and the signing of such high-profi le players as Darius Boyd and Dane Laurie.

Despite the best intentions, the Knights never really managed to get out of second gear in 2012 fi nishing well outside a fi nals berth in 12th place.

Losing captain Kurt Gidley to a dislocated shoulder in round 5 didn’t help matters, although their season hit a nadir in round 9 when a 24-6 loss to the Roosters kicked off a nightmare five-game, seven-week losing streak.
