Hunter Greens candidate David Atwell has slammed Labor’s “hypocritical approach” to the coal industry, while outlining the Greens plans to regulate safety and eventually, wind down the industry. Mr Atwell told the Post that he believes Labor should have stood up to the coal industry in the same way that they stood up to tobacco companies – by imposing tougher regulations and taxes.

entral Maitland’s Levee project is one step closer following the announcement of $7 million of funding from the Federal Government. Taken from the Regional Development Australia Fund, the grant will cover almost half of the $15 million project, which involves reopening the Heritage Mall to one way traffic to create a shared zone, and creating a larger access point to the Hunter River. The announcement comes off the back of an $11 million dollar grant to establish affordable inner-city housing, and further grants to install CCTV in the CBD and illuminate taxi ranks. “To revitalise the CBD we need to make it an attractive place, a functional place and have more people living near the CBD,” Labor candidate for the Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon, said. Maitland Mayor, Councillor Peter Blackmore, said that projects like The Levee brings the community together. “It was easy to criticise people [over the downturn in mall patronage], but the fact is that Maitland had turned its back on its lifeblood,” Cr Blackmore said. “Now, people will be able to flow through to the river – this is all for Maitland.” Construction on the first phase, the shared zone, is expected to begin by March and should be completed by the end of the year.

Short-sighted and mean-spirited debate

orget the atrocities going on in Syria, or even the no-man’s land where we seem to be marooned on the question of the treatment of asylum seekers. The biggest issue of this election campaign is set to be the Coalition’s Paid Parental Leave Scheme. And that’s pathetic. Why? Because it shows you how short-sighted and mean spirited we can really be. It’s interesting to see the extent to which Australia’s two major parties have done an ideological switch on certain issues this election, that we have a potential Liberal Government putting forward as one of its key policies one of the most generous and equitable paid parental schemes in the world, one that recognises a woman’s right to be paid at her wage while she’s caring for a baby, and to be paid superannuation, while having the time to bond with her baby before returning to the workforce. It has Labor reform written all over it. In the interests of full disclosure, I have a stake in this issue as my husband and I plan to start a family

sometime during the next term of Government – not because we think the 44th parliament an auspicious time to procreate, it just so happens the time is nigh. But the question at the heart of it is: why shouldn’t women get a fairer deal? Because retirees might lose a tax break on their shares? Come on. I think it’s sad that the same people, the grandmothers and grandfathers of the mothers and fathers-to-be in question, are too worried about a small hit to their

retirement funds, to realise that maybe it’s a good thing overall when their children, who are facing record cost of living, rising housing prices and a keen shortage of childcare, are given the means to make a hard time a little less so. Who knows, the scheme may save grandparents the resources they would otherwise have contributed to help these fledging family units. The other argument being bandied around – “I never had it, so why should they?”– is ludicrous. The people pedalling this line surely can’t decry, say, medicare? If this was our approach to all social spending, we’d never see any socially responsible policies implemented in this country. A paid parental leave scheme that doesn’t penalise women economically for having children is absolutely justified. Let’s not forget the end product here is a new generation of tax payers. They’re going to be the ones funding the retirees’ hospital bills or people’s pensions one day. And perhaps also the cost of the scheme that was introduced when they were introduced into the world.

Mum-to-be says Coalition’s Paid Parental Leave will help working mothers Amelia Parrott

ew mums may soon be entitled to more time with their newborn baby without having to forego their weekly pay packet as part of the Coalition’s controversial paid parental leave scheme. If the Coalition is elected, the scheme, which comes into effect in July 1, 2015, will give mothers access to 26 weeks paid parental leave paid at the mother’s actual wage or minimum wage – whichever is highest – plus superannuation contributions. This is in contrast to the Labor Party’s current scheme where mothers at paid at the minimum wage for 18 weeks, and without super. Raworth resident, Ally O’Toole, is expecting her first child with husband, Nick, in December. Although Mrs O’Toole won’t benefit from the Coalition’s scheme with her first child, unsurprisingly, the mum-tobe was pleased by the prospect of more financial support and time spent with any future children but held concerns over how the scheme would be funded. e’ve made it past the halfway point of this campaign and it is still Tony Abbott’s election to lose. Yet, Kevin Rudd remains in real trouble. Labor don’t have the cash for big election sweeteners and so far big promises that involve big spends are outside of the forward estimates. A $2 billion rescue package for the car manufacturing industry to 2025 and an uncosted proposed company tax cut to 20 per cent in the Northern Territory are both not in the budget forecast so they’re essentially second-term promises. Ambitious, with a healthy dose of delusion.

It just gives people the option to stay at home longer. “But where [the Coalition] get the money from would be a really big issue.” Liberal Party leader, Tony Abbott, has said the full cost of the scheme will be released in the final week of the election campaign. It will be paid for by what the Coalition call a “modest tax on business” plus “associated reductions in other outlays and increases in receipts.” The Parliamentary Budget Office has costed the scheme at $5.5 billion per year. Nationals candidate for Hunter, Michael Johnsen, questioned the inequity of the Labor Party’s existing paid parental leave scheme. “When a new baby arrives there is no

‘leave’ from mortgages, power and fuel bills,” Mr Johnsen said in a statement. “Australian men and women receive a replacement wage when they are on annual leave, sick leave and long service leave – so why shouldn’t a mother receive her full wage while on parental leave?” Labor candidate for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon, hit back, doubting the Coalition’s ability to fund the scheme. “We’ve put in for the first time a sustainable and fully-funded paid parental leave scheme,” he said. “Tony Abbott, by contrast, has put in place a $5 billion scheme. “He is going to half pay for it with a big new tax on business, a tax which will inevitably be passed on to the consumer but hasn’t been able to say how he is paying for the other half. “While we would always like to do more, it has to be affordable and sustainable.”

candidate has managed to derail Tony Abbott so far. His staunch advocacy of the Paid Parental Leave plan has some colleagues within his own party shaking their heads. A recent poll showed it’s vote winner, but I’m not so sure about that. Corporate women on a higher than average wage, who stand to benefit the most, were probably going to vote for the Coalition anyway. Costings and demonstrating the ability to add-up is the Coalition’s biggest burden to this point. Labor will hound Tony Abbott until D-Day and when he does finally release all the detail (which will probably be election eve) he’s going to want to make sure that there’s no fancy accounting. They’ve had six years to get the balance right. Just over the half way point of this campaign, the mood for change is palpable.

Kevin Rudd is doing his best to exude confidence and has sought to remind people of his Lazarus-like political nature on a more regular basis. “I’ve been in a few tough spots before, a few of them, and I’ve managed to fight my way forward,” said Mr Rudd at one rousing speech in Adelaide. Like when you were dumped as leader, replaced by Julia Gillard, and then slowly climbed your way back up the greasy poll to sit on the top, Mr Rudd? How could we forget? It delivered three of the most tumultuous years in political history. But I don’t think such a reminder works as a re-election pitch. Voters won’t reward Rudd for something they partly blame him for. After week three of the campaign, I can tell you that the old Kevin Rudd is back and

Councillors at odds over suitability of East Maitland site for new centre

development for an 80 place childcare centre at East Maitland will go ahead, despite heated debate by Maitland Councillors over the appropriateness of the proposed site. The centre is to be constructed on Brisbane Street and will back on to the spray painting booth of an adjoining auto repair shop. Concerns were raised over traffic and parking, as well as the possibility of flooding on the block. Plans for the centre state that there will be twenty parking spaces, thirteen staff and will operate between 7am and 7pm. Councillor Burke called the location a “terrible site”. “In all my time in this city I have not seen a worse spot for a childcare centre,” he said. However, Councillor Bob Geoghegan said the project was vital as demands for childcare places grew. “No site is perfect, but it complies with all our guidelines and is very much needed,” he said. aitland City Council are calling for community input into their spending, after revealing that they could be operating at a $92 million deficit by the end of the decade. The ‘Funding Our Future’ survey, currently available online, gives respondents the opportunity to vote on how Council delivers its services, based on the cost to the ratepayer. “Council’s ten year community strategic plan indicates that the community is seeking an enhanced level of service over the next decade to cater for the growing population,” General Manager David Evans said. “Alongside the demand for enhanced services, many costs, such as electricity, street lighting and state government levies, are rising faster than inflation and are too great for Council to absorb.” In order to deliver a balanced budget and deliver already approved projects and services, average residential rates would need to rise 7.25 per cent, while to deliver enhanced services the rise would be 8.95 per cent. The smaller rise would equate to $72 in the first year, while the larger would be $89. A solution which falls between the two has not been ruled out. unter Greens candidate David Atwell has slammed Labor’s “hypocritical approach” to the coal industry, while outlining the Greens plans to regulate safety around the industry. Mr Atwell told the Post that he believes Labor should have stood up to the coal industry in the same way that they stood up to tobacco companies – by imposing tougher regulations and taxes. “It is a well-established in fact that the health effects of the coal industry can be deadly,” Mr Atwell said. “These health threats are common to both the workers and residents who are exposed to this dangerous pollution.” The Greens are proposing covers be placed on full coal trains in the short term, before an industry wind down, which they say would be timetabled so that as coal based energy dwindles, renewable energy sources increased. Mr Atwell said this would also allow time for workers to be retrained in the renewable energy industry. Labor candidate Joel Fitzgibbon acknowledged that there was a problem with coal dust, but said there is too much

conflicting science over the levels. “This is just another example of the Greens determination to close down the Hunter’s coal mining industry and that would mean economic catastrophe for the Hunter Valley,” Mr Fitzgibbon said. “Yes, there is a dust issue and we need to deal with it… we need to remain

vigilant and do what we can to ensure those dust levels are minimal.” However, Mr Atwell believes that vigilance is not good enough and someone needs to stand up to ‘King Coal’. “I wouldn’t be surprised if nothing changes until there is a class action suit against the industry,” he said.

This would equate to an average increase of $89 per year on the average residential rate.

Increase rates sufficiently to improve or expand 18 key service areas, being 8.95% p/a for seven years. This would include all services and projects as programmed, as well as see new projects and programs initiated in line with community priorities, with a significant boost to road and footpath funding, improved city appearance, new youth facilities, expanded recreational cycleways and more. This would equate to an average increase of $116 per year on the average residential rate.

Increase rates by annual rate peg amount only, being approximately 3% p/a. This would result in deficit budgets and/or cuts to the broad range of council services as well as reductions in the initiatives already programmed. This would equate to an average increase of $35 per year on the average residential rate.

Leg up for The Levee

s many people are now aware, Council has been granted $7 million dollars of Federal Government funding for The Levee in Central Maitland. This news has been welcomed with great enthusiasm at Council as it will ease the burden on ratepayers, with Council having less to borrow to complete the project. The announcement also cements the positive working relationship Council has with Federal MP Joel Fitzgibbon, with this one of a number of significant funding announcements the Federal Government has made for Maitland in the past twelve months. This $7 million adds to the $11.3 million granted for a major redevelopment of Athel D’Ombrain Drive to accommodate affordable housing, and $100,000 recently announced for closed circuit television to increase safety in the city centre. We are hopeful that we will receive continued federal support, no matter who is successful at the upcoming Federal election. If we are fortunate enough to continue to receive monetary support, there are a number of projects in the pipeline, including the redevelopment of Maitland’s Number One Sportsground and an extension of walk ways and cycleways throughout the city stretching to places like Morpeth and Walka Water Works. Of course, with the rate our city is growing there will always be projects waiting to be instigated and any assistance – from any level of government – is always greatly appreciated. However, this week we can rest easy that The Levee will become the bustling retail and dining precinct that Council and the community so desperately want to see. With a stunning connection to the river and various opportunities for new business, the plans bring new hope that our city centre can once again shine in its role as the heart of Maitland.

ne of the most frustrating jobs to attend as a police officer is a party that is out of control. Quite often no real thought has been put into the party and when things go bad the organiser simply closes it down. This may lead to an alcohol-fuelled group hanging around an area. By considering the following tips when planning your party, you can minimise the risks and help make your party successful, enjoyable and safe for everyone. • Notify police that you are having a party by completing the Safe Party Notification Form. This form can be lodged at your closest police station at least 7 days prior to the party. You can find the form at your local station or by googling “NSW Police Safe Party”. • Don’t use the internet, SMS or email distribution lists or notice boards to send out invitations. If word of the party has spread, you will need to take extra preventative measures such as, changing the venue, arranging more supervision or possibly even a security guard. • Enforce a RSVP and/or have guests present their invite • Make sure your party has a definite start and finish time. • If your party will be held at a local public hall or sporting venue, contact the local council or community group regarding the hiring conditions imposed at the facility. • Talk to your neighbours and give them a contact number and/or name of the party host should a problem occur. • Try to have only one entry or exit point. With regards to the venue you need to consider, is the venue large enough for the amount of people attending? Appropriate lighting, first aid and what to do if someone becomes sick or drunk should all be thought through beforehand. Also consider whether there are sufficient toilets, parking and nearby public amenities and where guests can put their valuables. Parties are an important part of social life. With a bit of planning, it is possible to mitigate the possibilities of an out of control party.

eginning his career as a carpentry apprentice at local training organisation Hunter Valley Training Company (HVTC), things have come full circle for Justin Eveleigh, who has now returned to his old foundations to oversee the construction of company’s new $5 million Skills Centre. Now working for Drayton Construction, Mr Eveleigh said he jumped at the chance to be able to work on such a significant project for HVTC – the organisation that helped give his career a start more than 20 years ago. “As a young apprentice starting my trade, this is something I’d never imagined would happen,” he said.

“It’s really satisfying to have started my apprenticeship with HVTC and then be able to reconnect with them all these years later.” At the official sod turning ceremony in June, Mr Eveleigh was reunited with HVTC’s Foundation Chairman and Director The Hon. Milton Morris AO and Executive Director Kay Sharp AM, whom he had not seen since finishing his apprenticeship more than 20 years ago. “It was really special to see Kay and Milton again and they both remembered me from my time as an apprentice,” he said. As an apprentice, Mr Eveleigh was awarded a bronze medal at the Master Builders Apprentice of the Year awards and was one of a few apprentices nominated for a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust.

aitland woman Fiona Lyon was among nearly 300 breast cancer survivors to participate in a national breast cancer summit hosted by Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) in Sydney earlier this month. The BCNA National Summit 2013 brought together hundreds of women from across the country who are breast cancer support leaders in their communities, with the aim of building skills, knowledge and connections among group representatives and individuals who support women and families affected by breast cancer in their local area. Representing the Maitland Women’s Cancer Support Group, Ms Lyon said the meeting was inspiring and offered “practical ideas and resources” to take back to the Maitland community. “Local cancer groups are a great source of support for women dealing with breast cancer, and are powered by local survivors who volunteer their own time,” she said. BCNA CEO Maxine Morand described the women as, “the heart of our national support network.” “They give so much to their local communities,” Ms Morand said. “It’s a privilege to work with them and help build their capacity to continue supporting women and families affected by breast cancer around Australia.” BCNA is the peak national organisation representing Australians affected by breast cancer and links together more than 80,000 individuals and 300 community support groups,

aitland’s dank laneways could soon be a thing of the past following a plan to revitalise the under-utilised passages. The Council plan aims to complement the existing plans for The Levee project by providing further links to the Hunter River and placing art and lighting in the spaces. Almost 20 lanes and alleys have been identified for potential invigoration, both in the mall and further east and west along High Street, as well as around Church and Elgin Streets.

Joe Eisenberg, Cultural Director of Maitland Regional Art Gallery, and Ian Robinson, Secretary of Maitland Repertory Theatre are welcoming the idea, hoping it will bring attention to the forgotten end of High Street. Sun Street, which is a near neighbor of both organisations, has also been earmarked in the development plan. Mr Eisenberg believes the project would give Maitland more of a New York feel. “People really like the intimacy it gives you. That kind of closeness will appeal to visitors to the city.” Mr Robinson hopes it will bring people back to the cultural precinct. “Anything that will draw people to this end of town is a good thing,” he said.

The band will be in town next month and frontman Kim Benzie told TE that a fresh crop of songs and a recent line-up change has kicked the band into overdrive. “Yeah man, we’re deep in rehearsals at the moment for the tour, which is pretty soon,” Benzie said. “We’ve basically been nerding up on the songs for the past few

months so it should be a pretty wild show.” After releasing their critically acclaimed debut long player (a peak number two spot on the ARIA charts, gold record status, several hit singles and plum supports with the likes of Muse and Linkin Park), ‘This is the Warning,’ in 2011, it seemed as though the Brisbane five-piece had the world at their feet. However, after a solid block of touring plus some untimely lineup changes

prompted a feeling of stagnation within the band, according to Kenzie, and getting back into the studio was just the antidote. “Yeah, I’d say our survivalist instinct kicked in,” Benzie said. “We did a hell of a lot of touring off the back of the last one and we kind of got to a point where we thought ‘well, we can’t keep touring this album forever’. “Also, we had a line-up change after the last album [guitarist Scott Maric was replaced by Clint Vincent] and we were so focused on rebuilding that we got really far behind schedule.” With a batch of songs that were written largely on tour over the past 12 months, the band hunkered down in the studio with producer Forrester Savell, who has essentially been in camp DLC since day one and Benzie said while the recording process was quite instense, the band were over the moon with the result. “Yeah, it was quite intensive and full-on but I’d say that because of that, we’re even happier with how the album came out,” he said. “We wanted to make sure that this was an album of all killer – you know, not just an album with a few strong single songs. Anyway, the record company and management were a little bit ‘ooh, time to move onto the next one’, but once it got out there, the fans seemed to just get it, which is awesome. “Working with Forrester again was just fantastic because he has been as much a part of the Dead Letter Circus journey as we have – I mean, he was the best man at my wedding,” Benzie said. “He really knows where we’re coming from and it’s a real family kind of vibe. Also, Clint, our new guitarist, used to be our tour manager, so we really are quite a tight-knit unit.” Catch Dead Letter Circus when they bring their Catalyst Fire tour to the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, September 7 alongside Closure in Moscow and Sleep Parade.

Think twice about medical advice

f you get sick and go off to a heath professional, they will hopefully diagnose you and get you the best treatment. But have you ever wondered who is telling them what treatment they should be giving? Well, some other Aussies have. According to a disturbing new Australian study from Bond University, most members of US panels that define conditions have financial links to drug companies. The study’s researchers raise questions about processes used for defining diseases and say about 75 per cent of members of US panels have declared conflicts of interest. Of those, the average panel member disclosed seven industry links. The top medical panels in the US have a big influence on what happens in Australia. The study, under the direction of Professor Paul Glasziou, is researching over-diagnosis. “This is where patients with mild symptoms or at low risk may be labelled as ill and receive treatments that may actually do them more harm than good,” he said. Lead author Ray Moynihan, a senior research fellow at the university, said

there is a clear conflict of interest. “If a panel of experts decides to expand the definition of a condition, then that is widening the market for the companies those experts are working with.” This is obviously hugely profitable to the companies. “We are talking about many common conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma or depression. “One example is a 2003 panel that created a new diagnostic category called ‘pre-hypertension’. Or they lowered the ‘safe’ cholesterol numbers, so overnight, millions of people woke up with now ‘unsafe’ levels.” That instantly creates a very large number of people who fitted into that category. Pharmaceuticals are a trillion dollar industry and can pretty much make up their own rules. The best way to keep out of their dealings is to stay as healthy as possible in the first place. Eat real food, get quality sleep, be as positive as you can be mentally and move! Wouldn’t it be nicer talking to your doctor at the gym discussing exercise technique, than in their office going over your symptoms?

The top five fashion mistakes

nyone and everyone can pick out a fashion ‘crime’ in a crowd, but is it a trap that we all fall into? Every day we make fashion related mistakes and while some won’t be obvious to the average person, once you notice what you’re doing, it is an easy fix. This week I went on the hunt for our most commonly made fashion mistakes and here is my top five. Mistake 1: Did you know that most of us only wear around 20 per cent of our wardrobe? Yes, seems unbelievable but it is so true – I tested the theory on myself – we are wasting our money and our beautiful clothes every day. Take a look in your wardrobe and reunite yourself with those long lost clothes you forgot. Donate the clothes that you are unlikely to wear again to charity and move the good-enoughto-keep items to the front and centre of your wardrobe. Mistake 2: So you are running late for work and you forget your belt, exposing your ‘Calvins’, or decide that your bright red bra is not ‘that’ noticeable under a sheer white top.

Yes, it’s noticeable and yes, it’s a crime. If you can see it, so can your boss, your friends, your family and that stranger who keeps staring at you. Visible underwear on men or women is never acceptable. Mistake 3: If you are not too sure if you should wear jeans or a black tie, or not sure if an outfit fits you or your shape correctly, don’t leave it to chance. Dressing inappropriately for the occasion, for your size or for your shape is a big fashion mistake! Take a little extra time to be sure that what you are wearing is appropriate. Mistake 4: Love that new season Louis Vuitton handbag but don’t have enough cash to buy the real thing? Whatever you do, don’t fake it. Nothing says trashy like imitation handbags, clothes, shoes or accessories. If you can’t afford it, save up or simply forget it; there are some really nice, classy handbags out there at a fraction of the cost that are just as good. Mistake 5: You might love your makeup, but no-one loves smoky eyes, sparkling eye shadow or false lashes during the daytime. Heavy makeup should be kept for evenings only.

Following Snowden’s send-off, it didn’t take long for the Cowboys to take advantage of having an extra player on the field, with Robert Lui throwing a dummy and beating the defence in the 69th minute to win the game 26-6.

The Knights went in to the half time break 14-points behind and despite an energised effort in the second half, were unable to contain the desperate Cowboys side who as a result of Saturday’s win, move into eight position. The Knights are 7th.
