Last year, spurred on by the death of her father from cancer in 2011, Ms Varley raised over $10,000 for children’s cancer charity, Camp Quality through two separate events. In April she trekked the Sandakan-Ranau Death March in Borneo, where her team raised in $20,000, and she organised a Christmas in July ball, which raised $5600. Aside from Camp Quality, Ms Varley has also given her time and support to Daffodil Day, Pink Ribbon Day, Bandanna Day, the Harry Meyn Golf Day and Trivia Night, and Relay for Life. 17-year-old Caprice Skinner, from Thornton, was awarded Young Citizen of the Year for her contribution to the community. The All Saints College, St Mary’s Campus student leader has volunteered her time for several charity and after-school programs, and is an active member of Maitland Netball Association and Beresfield Swimming Club. 11-year-old Cassandra Fayers, from Metford, received a Certificate of Special Recognition in the Junior Citizen of the Year category for her school and sporting achievements. Cassandra is a national cross-country champion. Maitland Mayor, Peter Blackmore, said that the awards celebrate individuals who work tirelessly to enrich the community through their commitment and service to others.

Maitland Citizen of the Year, Rhiannon Varley “We received a number of high-calibre nominations for this year’s awards and I congratulate Ms Varley on her award and thank her for the wonderful contributions she has made the community and the lives of others,” he said. “We are [also] very fortunate to have so many
