Numbers don’t add up Councillor: It’s time to commit to building youth infrastructure AMELIA PARROTT

M

aitland City Council has reneged on its promise to build three new skate/BMX parks in Maitland, according to north ward Councillor Philip Penfold. Cr Penfold made the claim last week and added that the current draft 2013-14 budget made no mention of the additions, which formed part of the Council’s Youth Spaces Strategy Management Plan. Cr Penfold said he would like to see Council commit funds to the planning and design of the youth spaces, an action he believes would pave the way for grants to construct new skate parks and BMX tracks at Greenhills, Lochinvar and Metford. “I understand that Council has limited funds at its disposal and some projects take priority over others,” he said. “But there are 70 playgrounds in Maitland for little kids to be active and only seven for youth. “Large sections of Maitland are completely lacking skate parks including the fact that there are zero facilities south of the highway.” A spokesperson from Maitland City Council said provisions have been made in Council’s Draft Section 94 Contribution Plan to levy funds in the order of $1 million for the future provision of a skate park and BMX track at Lochinvar. The spokesperson added the preliminary investigations would be undertaken to identify a future youth space site at Greenhills subject to grant funds or general revenue. No mention was made of the proposed BMX track at Metford.

rms to investigate Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will carry out investigations on Cessnock Road at Testers Hollow to determine what sort of upgrade could be instated to flood-proof the notorious road. The news comes despite claims from the RMS in March that the road, also known as Main Road 195, did not need to be upgraded due to the infrequency of flooding on the road.

ducation funding seemed to be one of the hot topics of the past week, and this was particularly so in the Hunter with School Education Minister Peter Garrett’s visit to Woodberry Public to spruik the Government’s $7 billion Gonski funding reforms. Mr Garrett spoke to teachers, parents and students about the changes to the system that the funding injection would achieve. The visit was part of a blitz by Government MPs to highlight the issue of school funding, one of the big differences in policy terms between the Government and the Coalition. The Coalition has stated it won’t support Gonski if it wins the election, saying instead it will seek a new deal with the States focusing on teacher performance. Many people in the community would agree that education deserves more funding. It is one of those areas, like healthcare and infrastructure, that would benefit from unlimited resources – something that realistically, government’s cannot do. Come September, we get to make the decision about what we want our education system to be in the future. By knowing what is on offer, we can make an educated decision.

Minister visits to spruik education funding amidst Opposition criticism

F

ederal School Education Minister, Peter Garrett, was in town last week visiting local public schools to spruik the Government’s Gonski reforms. Mr Garrett made an appearance at both Woodberry and Waratah Public Schools with local member, Sharon Grierson, and the Labor candidate for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon, to talk to teachers about the Government’s National Plan for School Improvement. Under the plan, NSW schools will receive an extra $1.6 million per school on average over the next six years. “Extra investment will be permanently locked in to the funding system, so that schools like Woodberry Public will know every year that they will have enough money to support their students and continue with great programs like ‘Focus on Reading’,” Mr Garrett explained. “Our plan will also deliver higher teacher training standards, more support for early years reading, more local decision-making and better information for parents.” The Minister was quick to point out the potential loss of funding he said could occur under an Abbott Government. “New data reveals that over the next 6 years, government schools across the state would lose a total of around $3.6 billion, the equivalent of $1.7 million per school on average [and] non-government schools would lose a total of around $7.6 million or $800,000 per school on average,” he said. “This is the result of lower indexation and the Coalition’s refusal to guarantee

the extra school funding on offer.” The visit came a day after the Opposition’s Education Spokesperson, Christopher

Pyne, criticised NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell for being “conned” by the Federal Government, urging him to pull

out of the Gonski agreement. “I think NSW has signed up to a very bad deal,” Mr Pyne said.

Investigation underway

RMS confirms it will look into options for flood-prone Cessnock Rd Amelia Parrott

R

oads and Maritime Services (RMS) will carry out investigations on Cessnock Road at Testers Hollow to determine what sort of upgrade could be instated to flood-proof the notorious road. The news comes despite claims from the RMS in March that the road, also known as Main Road 195, did not need to be upgraded due to the infrequency of flooding on the road. The road was inundated during heavy rains in early March this year, cutting off the main thoroughfare connecting Maitland to the F3 and Cessnock for a week, causing Maitland City Council and Cessnock City Council to write to the RMS and the NSW Roads Minister requesting action be taken to address the issue. Maitland MP Robyn Parker said the road was well-used by motorists and anticipated more traffic on the road when the Hunter Expressway opens at the end of the year. “This is an important route which links the Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri interchange with Maitland,” she said. “More than 800 vehicles use the road at Testers Hollow every day and based on traffic modelling studies carried out recently this is set to increase when the Hunter Expressway opens around the end of this year.”

Flood plagued Cessnock Road at Testers Hollow

The RMS Investigations will include reviewing a flood study carried out by

Cessnock City Council, a detailed survey of the road and preliminary design work

for proposed options and are expected to be completed in September.

Samaritans Manager Sue Williams, Emergency Relief Coordinator Tracey Jackson and Chief Executive Cec Shevels open the Toronto Emergency Relief Centre

In it together: Samaritans appeal for help this winter Amelia Parrott

M

any elderly people in our community will fall ill this winter because they cannot afford to turn on a heater. This was the message handed down by Samaritans Chief Executive Cec Shevels on Thursday as the Hunter-based charity launched its Winter Appeal with the opening of a new Emergency Relief Centre at Toronto. Mr Shevels said the charity would not only be able to assist the elderly members in the community through the centre, but also homeless youth, vulnerable families, servicemen suffering from mental illnesses

and those who have recently been released from prison, by providing financial and emotional support. But Mr Shavels added the cost of providing support is great and the charity needs help from the public to raise the necessary funds. “We’re hoping to raise $120,000 this year which will see us through the rest of the year, providing programs offering immediate assistance as well as pathways out of disadvantage,” he said. “It’s a good time also at the end of the financial year for people to make a donation that’s tax deductable. “We’re all in it together.” To donate to the Samaritans Winter Appeal, visit www.samaritans.org.au or phone 1300 656 336.

evin Rudd was back in the spotlight last week, declaring that he’s changed his mind on same-sex marriage. This is despite opposing it when he was Prime Minister – when he actually could have wielded some real influence. With a 2,000 word blog on his website, he explained that his epiphany came after meeting up with a gay staffer who’d had to reconcile his sexuality and strong Pentecostal faith. A seemingly innocuous press conference followed, and with a few flicks of the hair and few cheesy lines, K Rudd (as he likes to refer to himself), was back. Journalists haven’t been treated to “Are you ready to Rock and Roll” or “It’s time to zip” for quite a while now. These Ruddisms amuse the press gallery – but would, no doubt, annoy the Prime Minister. Any seasoned Rudd watcher knows that Tuesday’s media appearance was as much about his leadership as it was gay marriage. Make no mistake – Rudd has not given up his leadership ambition. That little ‘backflip’ exercise was to remind everyone he’s not going anywhere and again highlight the

differences between him and his nemesis, Julia Gillard. Gillard doesn’t support same-sex marriage – and many question why. She’s a modern woman that’s pursued her career to the top, sacrificed having a family of her own, she’s living in The Lodge out of wedlock and she’s an atheist. But, she doesn’t support Gay Marriage. Huh? She’s also ignored what could have been a been a great Labor legacy – I think personal beliefs have given way to her political radar. Truth is, I don’t think Julia Gillard wants to have a fight with a conservative, deeply religious Opposition Leader in Tony Abbott. There’s a void of leadership on her part because of this issue – and Kevin Rudd has seized it, and grabbed it with both hands. There’s no chance that his leadership can be revived for this election. That ship has sailed. But Kevin from Queensland is playing the long game – he sees himself as Prime Minister (again). Kevin 07 doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as Kevin 16 – but you can be sure he’ll be working on a new catchphrase for the next 3 years.

aitland MP Robyn Parker has congratulated the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Hunter firm Kingston Building on the progress of construction for the new $4 million Lower Hunter Zone Fire Control Centre. “Work commenced on the East Maitland site earlier this year and I’ve been told that the local RFS headquarters is expected to be completed ahead of schedule before the end of winter,” Ms Parker said. The Lower Hunter Zone Fire Control Centre will be the new workplace for 26 staff and the headquarters for the 47 RFS

brigades in the Maitland, Port Stephens, Dungog and Cessnock council areas. “This state of the art of facility is strategically located to bring a range of RFS activities under one roof as well as being situated close to the soon to be completed Hunter Expressway,” Ms Parker added. The centre will provide a venue for advanced training, operational management, prevention and mitigation activities and will have a storage facility to house specialist equipment during large fires and emergencies. Around 2,000 people around the Lower Hunter region are Rural Fire Service volunteers.

Data released by The Salvation Army last week indicated that of 2,705 clients who were surveyed, over half of them have gone without meals, sometimes in favour of their children, and over a quarter of clients cannot afford heating in just one room of the house while over half can’t pay utility bills on time. “It is to meet these and many other needs faced by everyday Australians that The Salvation Army still urgently needs your support,” Mr Dibley said. donations,” Mr Dibley said. “There are still many regions where results are not finalised and there will still be official volunteer collectors out, and static collection points happening, during the week, so if you continue to see our volunteers we would appreciate your support as we continue to work toward our goal of $380,200. “We also thank the 1,500 volunteer collectors in the Hunter who assisted us this weekend in raising these vital funds. Mr Dibley said many individuals and families are doing it tough, with household budgets impacted by increasing costs of living.

Police on Facebook

s some readers may be aware, the NSW Police Force has moved into the social media age with the introduction of Facebook pages for each Local Area Command across the State. Central Hunter LAC, consisting of greater Maitland and the townships of Kurri and Cessnock, have been on Facebook for about a year. Apart from allowing police to disseminate information to the public about crime trends, changes in law and information about wanted persons, this media platform has allowed feedback from the community. What is interesting is that some issues brought up by the community do not always readily raise the attention of police. An example is the public’s concern with motorists driving with their fog lights on during periods of clear weather. As a result, this information has been passed onto operational police and a motorist education program

is being undertaken. On the Facebook page, police publish information and photographs taken from CCTV at crime scenes as well as photographs of persons wanted on warrant offences. These photos generate a large amount of interest and have led to information which has resulted in a good number of arrests. One recent example was the high profile theft of a pink fibreglass cow from the Bolwarra area. Within 35 minutes of a request for information being placed on Facebook, a call was received which led to the return of the stolen property and legal action against those involved. For those interested in having a look at the page, you must join Facebook online then search for ‘Central Hunter LAC NSW Police’. One thing to note is that Facebook should not be used to report crime– contact Triple 000, local police stations, the Police Assistance Line and Crime Stoppers.

rom the end of this month, northern NSW will be served by a new police commander, Assistant Commissioner Jeff Loy (pictured). Assistant Commisioner Loy first worked as a police officer in Sydney, then in both Hamilton and Belmont before later taking on positions in Tweed Heads, Lismore and Albury. With over thirty years of experience as a police officer, he said he is looking forward to the challenges that the new role presents. “Having been fortunate enough to serve in a variety of roles and at a number of locations throughout NSW, I am looking forward to returning to Newcastle and the Northern Region. “Being a police officer is about caring about people, wanting to make a difference and helping people.” The appointment was announced by NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione.

“Throughout his service with the NSW Police Force, Jeff has made significant contributions to the communities he has served,” Commissioner Scipione said. Wallsend MP Sonia Horney, who has been vocal in her concerns regarding community safety in her electorate, has welcomed Assistant Commissioner Loy’s appointment to the role. “One of the main complaints from my constituents about crime in the area is the capacity of police to respond,” she said. “Thousands of residents and shop owners are concerned about a rise in crimes such as property damage, theft and general anti-social behaviour.”

GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED NOW!

The most important thing you may do for your health this winter is get your skin checked The sun-smart message is often neglected during the winter. Winter may prove to be the best time for a full skin check. As most people are covered up during the winter months, this minimises sun exposure to skin lesions and moles. This can allow for better dermoscopy viewing (a distinct magnifying light, which allows a doctor to closely examine spots on the skin). Remember to protect your skin this winter by applying 50+ sunscreen to exposed areas of skin. If you notice a spot on the skin that looks different from the others or is changing, bleeding or itchy, it should be examined by a doctor.

upport continues to grow around the need for a dedicated medical team for the Hunter Westpac Rescue Helicopter with Maitland City Council now throwing its weight behind the cause. The council has vowed to write to the State Government to express their support, joining Newcastle City Council, Newcastle MP, Tim Owen, and NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, who have all backed the need for a dedicated medical team for the Hunter service. Hunter Westpac Rescue Helicopter General Manager, Richard Jones, said a dedicated team consisting of a doctor and paramedic is required under new standards set out by the NSW Health Department, but Newcastle was still dependant on ambulance paramedics, putting added strain on the already busy John Hunter Hospital. “We’ve been supported by ambulance paramedics and for over the past 30 years they have done a wonderful job,” he said. “But the Health Department changed the rules and for some reason we have been left without the dedicated team. “[Orange, Sydney and Wollongong] have it but Newcastle is the last to move into this system and we’d like it sooner than later.” Mr Jones said initial funding for the

he thorny issue of which Council should be responsible for the areas of Beresfield and Tarro on the outskirts of the Newcastle City Council local government area was one of the concerns raised at a community hearing held at Maitland Town Hall last Wednesday night hosted by the Independent Local Government Review Panel (ILGRP). As part of its role in ensuring the future sustainability of local councils across NSW, in its Future Directions for NSW Local Government report the panel has suggested the amalgamation of Cessnock, Dungog and Maitland Councils into one Lower Hunter Council and a review of council boundaries, including the Newcastle-Maitland City Council boundary. The report states that “the Beresfield

area of Newcastle could also be included as it is closely linked to Maitland and separated by a major wetland from the rest of Newcastle.” Local resident, Greg Cavanagh, voiced his concerns about Maitland Council ending up with Newcastle’s failing assets. “Look at Beresfield Pool and the golf course, we don’t want to be inheriting Newcastle’s debts,” he said. “[Lord Mayor, Jeff] McCloy would be giggling!” Maitland Mayor Peter Blackmore said that during a meeting with panel member Jude Munro, Ms Munro indicated there would be no “cherry picking” when it came to realigning boundaries. Cr Blackmore is yet to formally support the idea of amalgamating the three neighbouring councils. He told the Post he would like to see the matter go to Hunter Councils and see input from residents, businesses and trade unions before decisions are made.

Thorny issue: Amalgamation plans raise questions

We know the figure above represents the average distribution of this publication. No more, no less. It’s the absolute truth. How do we know? Well, we have our publication audited by the CAB. Why? Because we are committed to protecting our advertisers. The CAB audits our newspapers, magazines, websites and exhibitions to make sure advertisers are getting all of what they are paying so much for. There is a lot of money at stake, but a surprisingly large number of advertisers blindly trust the numbers they are given by unaudited media. We just don’t understand why. Why would an advertiser risk paying too much for too little? Ask yourself this, what kind of media outlet wouldn’t want to be audited? As an advertiser, put your mind at rest, insist that you only use media that’s been CAB audited. Like this one.

H

unter woman Paras Pappas hasn’t been on a bike much since she was a kid, but next month she will cycle 325-kilometres around Cambodia to help raise funds to improve financial literacy among Cambodians. Ms Pappas, 37, who works in the Greater Building Society’s property department, was one of only nine people selected from Australian credit union and building societies to participate in the 13-day 2013 Credit Union Foundation Australia (CUFA) Cambodian Leadership Challenge in early June. Her first trip to Cambodia, the bike ride will take Ms Pappas from the capital Siam Reip through the Cambodian countryside as well as to the wonder of the world, Angkor Wat.

“The trip will definitely take me out of my comfort zone, but I am always up for a challenge,” she said. “Hopefully I will be able to help some Cambodian children and their fledgling financial institutions to improve financial literacy so people have a better future.” Before taking off to Cambodia, Ms Pappas is required to raise at least $3,300 to contribute to Cambodian communities through the Children’s Financial Literacy Program, which teaches thousands of children the importance of saving for things such as new school uniforms. Cholesterol and exercise

I

f you are trying to lower your cholesterol, are on cholesterol lowering medication and also trying to do some exercise to improve your fitness, the fact is that you may be not getting the benefits you should from your extra activity. A new study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, shows that simvastatin, a cholesterol-lowering statin drug , seemed to “block the ability of exercise to improve…fitness levels” among people who are overweight or obese, researcher John Thyfault, an associate professor of nutrition and exercise physiology at the University of Missouri, wrote. “Statins have only been used for about 15 to 20 years, so we don’t know what the long-term effects,” Thyfault said. “If the drugs cause complications with improving or maintaining fitness, not everyone should be prescribed statins.” The study was conducted with 37 people between ages 25 and 59, all of whom were obese and had low fitness levels. Over 12 weeks, everyone participated in a fitness program; with about half of the participants also taking 40 milligrams of simvastatin every day.

Researchers found that the participants taking the simvastatin experienced less benefit from the exercise than those who didn’t take the drug. For example, those who took the statins had a 1.5 per cent increase in cardiorespiratory fitness after the fitness regimen, compared with a 10 per cent increase among those who didn’t take the statins. There are many studies showing other side effects of statins and that many people have to stop taking them because of side effects. Patients should still proceed with caution when considering statins, says Dr. Barbara Roberts, director of the Women’s Cardiac Center at Miriam Hospital in Rhode Island, and author of ‘The Truth About Statins’. Studies have not shown that statins help women who don’t already have heart disease, even if they have risk factors like obesity and family history, she says. That’s compared to a recent study that found a 30 per cent reduction in heart attacks in people who follow a Mediterranean diet. Like anything to do with your fitness or health, trust your intuition, ask questions about anything you are putting in your body and always get a second opinion.

A

Black and white choices

fter all the colour that we wore this summer, you would expect some of it to stay around for the colder months. Surprisingly, it is just the opposite; this season’s hottest trend is completely colourless. Wearing black and white has always been a part of the fashion industry and I wouldn’t be surprised if every man, woman and child had at least one black item and one white one in their wardrobes. I often go to my black and white clothes when I have nothing else to wear or when I don’t really feel like standing out – black and white tends to be my backup plan. When I think of these colours I think simple, boring and easy to pull off. But the trend this season is anything but plain! Think wild, geometric patterns, thick stripes, checks, bold accessories and statement pieces, all of them monochrome. This season, the two colours, black and white, are being treated as one. You can’t just wear one without the other, they should be worn together. What is really great about this trend

is that you can make it your own by choosing patterns, accessories and clothing types that suit your personal style. You can stay on-trend without changing anything about yourself. Don’t be afraid to make it your own. Switching from wearing colour one season to eliminating it altogether is never easy. Don’t feel like it has to be this way, as you can still add colour to your outfit whilst keeping the monochrome trend as the highlight. For example, why not team a geometric monochrome print dress with some colourful accessories like a scarf, shoes or handbag. With any new trend, if it is something you are a little hesitant to try, start off small. Add some unobtrusive monochrome accessories to your usual outfits or just start with a top or a pair of shoes. It can be a big thing to go all out at once, but sometimes that can make it easier to adopt a new trend as your own. If you have a night out coming up, why not use it as an excuse to try the new trend!

There is going to be a need to sort out some serious relationship issues otherwise break ups and separations are likely. A serious talk with a loved one is what’s needed. Very often, how you relate to others depends on how you relate to yourself. Thus, if you are at one with yourself, it is easier for others to work out what you want from them and what you are likely to be able to offer them as part of the relationship.

The Full Moon highlights problems on the job front. It’s obvious that something is ending in your working life, but that’s nothing to be concerned about. For every ending there’s a new beginning. However, you would be wise to proceed with caution when it comes to handling prickly issues with colleagues, bosses and clients. The spotlight is on your home and family so before you act, you need a well thought-out plan so take some time to make sure that your strategies are workable. An electrical appliance or something to do with your home may either need to be repaired or replaced. Also you need to be careful of rebellious behaviour coming from certain family members who may feel that you are trying to control them!

The Full Moon highlights several issues that need to be dealt with concerning your children. A child’s progress at school and their wellbeing is the first of these priorities. Perhaps a younger member of the family needs to be taken in hand or extra help arranged in matters of schooling. Romantically, too, there are issues which require your immediate attention and these can’t be ignored or put on hold.

ith an impressive standup career that shows no signs of slowing down and memorable performances on the small screen (‘Jimeoin’, ‘Thank God You’re Here’, ‘The Librarians’, ‘Stupid Stupid Man’), the silver screen (‘Bad Eggs’, ‘The Craic’, ‘Beneath Hill 60’) and on the printed page with his collection of short stories ‘Under Stones’, there’s no denying that the London-born, Welsh-raised Bob Franklin has earned a place as one of Australia’s favourite funnymen. The laconic jokester will be in town next month as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow although he told TE that potential punters should not get their hopes up too high about the quality of his performance. “I’d say that people can expect an evening of mild disappointment,” he said.

“I think it’s good not to raise people’s expectations too high so you’re not let down. Franklin, who first came to national attention on IrishAustralian comedian Jimeoin’s TV show – particularly for his hilarious ‘Cooking With Bob’ segments (which he also developed into a show with the Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe) – said he was unsure if he would be donning the chef’s hat in Newcastle as the proliferation of reality cooking shows have made his recipes somewhat daggy. “I really don’t know what I’ll be able to cook, to be honest – all of my recipes are old fashioned now, like the peach cobbler. Great dessert, but really uncool.” When asked what had been tickling his funnybone of late, Franklin said he didn’t have to look too far away from home for laughs. “I’m still a really big fan of stuff like The Simpsons and Seinfeld but then we

have plenty of really quality Australian comedies like A Moody Christmas and [diminutive comedian Josh Thomas’s] Please Like Me. That show was just so well crafted and genuine – kind of like the stuff you’re used to seeing on the BBC or HBO. It’s really encouraging to see that Australia can still produce such quality comedy.” Franklin said it was the rogue spirit and light subversiveness of his comedic heroes that originally spurred him to get onstage, but he added that, sadly, some of that subversiveness had been lost in modern comedy. “I was always a big fan of guys like Morecombe and Wise, Tommy Cooper, Will Hayes and Laurel and Hardy – these guys were very subversive and very antiauthority. “I suppose, to a degree, there are a lot of comics out there now who think of it as a career and they tend to play a certain game, which is counter to what comedy is about in the first place – the subversiveness. It’s hard to be subversive on a major network when it is being run by t**ts.” Franklin, a 20-year stand-up veteran, added that it was seeing the wealth of talent and what was being produced in Australia that had kept him so passionate about performing. “You see things like Please Like Me and that really gets you excited about it. It can be a really frustrating job but also very satisfying.” Catch Bob Franklin when he performs alongside Zoe Lyons, David Quirk, Jeff Green and Matt Okine in the Melbourne International Comedy Roadshow at the Civic Theatre on Friday, June 7, Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9.

Big scores dominate round

S

ome big score lines dominated the Round 7 results for the Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League. Cessnock, Maitland, Macquarie and Western Suburbs all had big wins to show for their efforts, in fine displays by all. This week sees the most traditional of local derbies up at Kurri on Saturday at 3pm. George Ndeira and his boys will be smarting from their big loss to Macquarie, whilst Todd Edwards’ Goannas seem to be setting themselves up for a big second half of the season. Direct from the ‘Leigh Maughan bunker’ up at Kurri, this will be a beauty and will be the live streamed ‘Match of the Round’ this Saturday with commentary from Tim Butler and Darren Forward, who continue to improve every week. On Sunday, all at 3 pm, Lakes United will look to post their first win under Rip Taylor when they take on Spider Walsh’s Port Stephens side, who are fresh from the bye. This should be a great clash as the players rip in for these two great mates to see who gets first bragging rights. Should be a close one. At Townson Oval, South Newcastle

Mixed bag of results

will be hoping to get some troops back on deck when they take on the unbeaten Macquarie Scorpions. Noel Dent’s boys continue to do everything asked of them, and Adam Betteridge will be hoping his boys can lift for this one. Finally, at St John Oval Paul Davis and his Central Newcastle side will be looking to bounce back from two disappointing losses when they take on the improving Maitland Pickers, who have now posted three wins in a row in what must be a huge boost for PJ Ellis. It should be a very entertaining clash with both sides having some real brilliance in their back lines. Don’t forget next week the Under 16s and 18s Country Championship weekend takes place at St John Oval, Charlestown. Round 9 of the Senior Competitions (Under 23s, Reserve and First Grade) will be played over that weekend. The following weekend, June 15 and 16, the Senior Newcastle Rebels side will play on the Saturday and no senior games will be played. Round 9 of the Under 18s competition will be played that weekend to bring all four competitions back into line with each other.

east cessnock district bowls report

NOTES from the real nrl

The City of Cessnock Junior Academy had its first training session on Friday, May 17 at ECBC. Australian Selector Sam Clough and ECBC Bowls Manager Paul Wesche put the 13 Academy Members through the session which covered the following areas. • Social Media: how to correctly use this tool and avoid problems. • Selection Path to the top of our sport. As a National Selector, Sam Clough’s knowledge of this pathway was invaluable to our Academy Members. • How to correctly measure. • Correct ettiquette and how to behave on the green. An enjoyable and educational time was had by both the Coaches and Academy members and we look forward to our next Training Session on May 31, where Simon Mitchell will be taking the juniors through practise drills and how best to utilise your practise time as well as scoring and keeping the scorecard correctly. The two juniors who won encouragement and achievment awards from the 1st Session were, Taylor Huntington from Kurri and Zac Maloney from Paxton. That’s all for this week. Take care.

NYC side record historic win over fifth-placed Warriors

T

he NYC Newcastle Knights posted their first ever victory at Mount Smart Stadium on Sunday, with an impressive 24-10 win against the fifth-placed New Zealand Warriors. The Knights started their Round 11 match strongly, with an early try to winger Lachlan Shipard, who received a beautiful cut-out pass from Honeti Tuha to score in the corner. This opening try came on the back of some scrambling defence, which saw the young Knights force the Warriors in to touch. Oakes conversion fell away but the Knights led early 4-0. Jack Mamo was the second to score with the help of Tuha, who threw another cut-out pass, this time to his right winger and the Knights led 10-0. The Warriors first points came through Metia Lisati in the 25th minute. Solomone Kata’s conversion missed, but the Warriors were within six-points. A pin-point kick from Eddie Proudler saw Shipard cross for his second. Shipard managed to out jump two Warriors defenders to get his hands on the ball. Oakes made

no mistake with his third kick and the Knights extended their lead again 14-4. The Knights continued to dominate early in the second half, with captain Adam Clydsdale

scoring under the posts from dummy half. Oakes added the extras and the Knights led 20-4. A dummy saw David Fusitua cross for the Warriors second try. Kata converted to take the score

to 20-10 with just over 15 minutes remaining. A Clydsdale grubber put Pat Mata’utia over to extend the visitors lead by 14-points and finalise the full time score at 24-10.
