t is a sound that has not been heard in 100 years - shots from a Nordenfelt gun ringing out across Newcastle Harbour.

The 130-year-old 1.5 inch gun, housed at Fort Scratchley, has been meticulously refurbished thanks to a $20,000 donation from Hunter Water and last week, it was fired for the first time in more than a century.

Installed in 1892 as a defence gun to protect the entrance to the harbour, in 1914 the Nordenfelt was moved to Sydney where it was stripped of its parts and left to rust for more than 70 years.

Fort Scratchley Historical Society life member, Andrew Griffith said it had taken 30 years to bring the historic gun back to Newcastle and return it to working order. “30 years ago if you said [this gun] was going to fire I would have laughed,� he said. “Even 12 months ago I’d have said it wouldn’t happen. “The gun was stuck open out in the weather for nearly 80 years and it just rusted up so everything had to be taken apart, cleaned and then re-put together. “A lot of companies in Newcastle volunteered their time and materials to get it done and without those people this gun wouldn’t have happened.�

The new addition makes Fort Scratchley the only place in Australia where the public can witness the regular firing of six historic guns. The Nordenfelt will be fired on Australia Day, the Queen’s Birthday, ANZAC Day and regular fort open days.

Abbott “on the nose� but best to let the public decide his fate You may have read about Prime Minister, Tony Abbott receiving a verbal dressing down from a Liberal supporter on Melbourne talkback radio last week. “You’re on the nose with Liberal voters and that’s a real concern to me because I don’t want to see you give the keys to Bill Shorten at the Lodge,� Mr Abbott was told.

I think the caller was right that Mr Abbott is becoming more unpopular with Liberal voters but I also agreed with the Prime Minister when he went on to say that changing leaders in the middle of a term was not the answer, as the former Labor government had shown.

Like a lot of people, I have a real problem with prime ministers changing mid-term. By all means let the Government have a leadership spill, but if a new leader is decided upon it should automatically mean an election is called.

The only stipulation I would put on this process would be to say that a leadership challenge could not happen in the first half of the term.

The Opposition can change leader as many times as they want, as far as I’m concerned.

I feel quite disillusioned with both Federal leaders at the moment. Mr Abbott seems to be able to find controversy with everything he says, while Labor’s Bill Shorten doesn’t seem to say a great deal apart from bagging the PM.

Admittedly, as an opposition leader you need to take advantage of every opportunity to point out the Government’s mistakes but let’s start hearing some solutions to the problems.

We have at least 18 months until the next Federal election. Right at this moment, would you be prepared to bet that both leaders will still be in their current position?

I can’t believe how fast the rugby league season has come around again.

For those who weren’t aware, the NRL Nines are on this weekend in Auckland.

I think all the players will be better for the experience of last year’s inaugural tournament.

Most sides quickly figured out that even with four less players on each team, field position was still very important and that strong hits-ups and quick play-the-balls from the forwards were still very important.

The semi-retired history teacher and Toronto resident was last week recognised for his efforts keeping the Lake free from rubbish, taking home the Volunteer of the Year award in Lake Macquarie City Council’s annual Australia Day Awards.

An active member of the Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, Mr Dewar played a key role in spearheading the group’s Tossers Can Be Binners anti-littering campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the impact discarded rubbish can have on the environment.

The campaign helped bring about a 20 kilogram reduction in the total amount of litter in the Toronto shopping precinct from September 2013 to September 2014.

Mr Dewar said the campaign was about changing behaviours.

“It was more of an education because you can’t always be right there when people are chucking the rubbish so the idea was that we would impress on everyone that Toronto is a tidy town.”

Pauling stands proud for Charlestown Lake Macquarie councillor endorsed as the Liberal Party candidate of the embattled state seat AMELIA PARROTT

t may have been a tough six months for his party, but Liberal candidate for Charlestown Jason Pauling says he’s still proudly conservative.

The 43-year-old Lake Macquarie councillor, who has named as the Liberal Party candidate for the embattled electorate last week, told the Post he believed voters were ready to trust a Liberal MP again. “[NSW Premier] Mike Baird came to the Hunter last year and promised to atone for the mistakes of a couple of MPs,” he said.

“We didn’t run candidates at the by-elections as part of that promise but now it’s time to draw a line in the sand.”

Mr Pauling is the first Liberal candidate to be endorsed for the seat of Charlestown since allegations of illegal campaign donations at the Independent Commission Against Corruption in August last year forced the resignation of former Charlestown MP Andrew Cornwell.

“Andrew [Cornwell] did the wrong thing but there is no doubt that a Liberal Government has been good for this region,” Mr Pauling said.

“I stand proud as a Liberal and I want to represent, be heard and do the right thing

by the people of Charlestown.”

Mr Pauling said, if elected, he would work to curb anti-social behaviour in the Charlestown CBD by supporting youth outreach programs.

A former chair of the Lake Macquarie Combined Chamber of Commerce and former president of Business Charlestown and the Lake Macquarie Business Club, Mr Pauling said he would also be a fierce campaigner for the local small business sector.

Mr Pauling will face off against Lake Macquarie Mayor and incumbent Member for Charlestown Jodie Harrison at the March 21 election.

Mr Pauling said he had concerns about Ms Harrison’s ability to effectively juggle her roles as both Mayor and MP. Ms Harrison said she had been working hard since the by-election to restore trust to politics in the region and was proud to stand by her record.

“I encourage everyone to Google the name of every candidate and see what they have achieved for this community,” she said.

“I’m focused on the issues - fighting to preserve TAFE and health services, improve public transport and bring more jobs to the region.”

ath Elliott, an independent candidate in Newcastle City Council’s upcoming Ward 3 by-election says she wants to put a stop to the party politics that are threatening the future of the city.

A Hamilton resident and mother of two, Ms Elliott is the former chief of the Newcastle Alliance and responsible for introducing the fare free bus zone and Livesites program in the CBD. She said she was inspired to get into politics after volunteering as campaign manager for John Church’s 2013 tilt at the Federal seat of Shortland.

“I learnt a lot about politics that year,” she said.

“Working with a major party, a lot of it I didn’t like, but what I did like was the connection with people and being able to change things.

“In Council, if I’m elected, as an independent I can do what I want - if the community doesn’t want something, I won’t be voting for it.

“It is liberating to be truly able to represent the community without someone else telling you that you can’t.”

Five candidates will contest the February 21 by-election.

The former head of the Newcastle Alliance, Kath Elliott (Independent) will appear first on the ballot paper, followed

by Independent candidate Allen Warren, the Greens’ Nevenka Bareham, Arjay Martin, and Labor Party candidate Declan Clausen. Only residents of Ward 3 will be required to vote.

“Why ask for community views if you were just going to ignore them and ram through the highest rate rise anyway,” she said.

“Labor and the Greens were always going to push for the most money from ratepayers to fund their pet projects.

“The last thing we want to see is a grab for rate revenue to fund their wasteful spending.”

Ward 3 residents will go to the polls to elect a new councillor on Saturday, February 21.

Ms Hornery met with Newcastle City Council Labor councillor, Jason Dunn last week to discuss the needs of the suburbs.

Beresfield and Tarro previously fell into the Cessnock electorate, but due to boundary redistribution are now part of Wallsend.

“This is a big, long stretch of road, but local government may not be able to undertake the extensive repairs that this roads needs and I will certainly lobby for that,” Ms Hornery said.

“I haven’t talked to senior members of the party but I’m certainly willing to have a conversation with them about that being a priority for the Wallsend electorate and it is [a priority], and it will be [a priority].”

Cr Dunn said that he often received complaints from residents about the condition of the road.

“Most people in the area drive through here one time or another each day and it really is in a terrible condition,” he said.

y the time Booral’s Rylee Holsworthy was two, her mother, Amy, knew something was wrong.

“She was progressing really well and was the happiest little kid, but she still wasn’t speaking and started having these really bad meltdowns,” Ms Holsworthy said.

“She was hitting and kicking me, pulling at her baby brother and had a total lack of interest in other children.

“We started to think that something wasn’t quite right.”

Ms Holsworthy and her husband, Jason, were correct, and Rylee was diagnosed with autism at age two-and-a-half.

Three years down the track Ms Holsworthy is adamant that without the help from Autism Spectrum Australia’s early intervention program, Rylee, now 6, wouldn’t have been able to start kindergarten in a satellite class at Tarro this year.

She said that although the program’s services provided simple things like organising appointments and filling out forms, they had made the world of the difference.

“They seem like little things, but when you’re struggling to come to terms with

“They made me grounded and set the path. We wouldn’t have had success without them.”

From there, Rylee was able to enter a pre-kindergarten program at Thornton’s Hunter Aspect School last year, where Ms Holsworthy said her speech came along in leaps and bounds, and is soon to start ballet lessons, something that previously

would not have been possible.

“I don’t think people realise how hard and isolating it is for a family with a child with autism,” she said.

“Little things would turn out life into a nightmare, but now she wants to do things that all the other kids do that people take for granted.

“She still has her moments where she struggles, but the change has been incredible.”

Work on the Hunter Expressway will see changed traffic conditions in place near the M1 Pacific Motorway from today (Wednesday) until Friday, between 9.30am and 2.30pm.

The northbound exit ramp from the M1 Pacific Motorway to both Newcastle and Branxton will also be closed from Monday, February 9 to Wednesday, February 11 between 8pm and 4am for work to replace red panels above the tunnel.

Motorists travelling toward Newcastle are advised that one lane of the expressway will be closed for work on the road shoulder and traffic control will be set up on the northbound exit ramp from the M1 Pacific Motorway to the Newcastle Link Road.

Northbound vehicles on the M1 Pacific Motorway travelling west on the Hunter Expressway or east on the Newcastle Link Road will need to exit at George Booth Drive toward Newcastle Link Road via Cameron Park Drive.

Detours and reduced speed limits will only be in place at night and all lanes and ramps will be open and operating as normal during the day and peak travel times.

Community safety is always one of Council’s top priorities, and this certainly includes the safety of children when it comes to parking and road safety in school zones.

hey have stood proud on the former BHP steelworks site at Mayfield for nearly a century.

But now, three physical links to Newcastle’s industrial past to are set to be demolished.

The Newcastle Industrial Heritage Association had been fighting to protect the old medical centre, pattern store and master mechanic’s office and last year secured an interim heritage order covering the buildings.

But earlier this month, NSW Heritage Minister Rob Stokes revoked the interim order, deeming the buildings to be of no significance to the state, clearing the way for the Port of Newcastle to demolish the buildings as part of its ongoing decontamination efforts at the site.

Newcastle Industrial Heritage Association vice-president Aub Brooks said he

was saddened by the State Government’s decision to lift the interim order.

“My family started working at the BHP in 1915,” he said.

“My grandfather worked there, my father, my brother, and I worked there for 38 years so there is a lot of family history.

There were 11,558 people working at that steelworks in 1964, so while the Heritage Minister may not believe these buildings are significant to the people of NSW, it is significant for a lot of us.

“I look at these building and I can see all the people who used to be there and what happened around them.”

“For me personally, it will be bloody sad to see them come down.”

Mr Brooks said the art deco style medical centre was particularly significant as many workers who were injured or died at the steelworks were treated there.

which the BHP was built - where decisions regarding construction were made, plans were drawn up and orders were put it.

The pattern store, constructed in 1917, may not look like much, but its merit lies in the materials used in its construction.

The sandstone bricks that make up the structure came from Morpeth’s Duckenfield House - a 45 room mansion built by John Eales in the 1800s.

Mr Brooks said the Association had requested some of the stones from the pattern shop be preserved for use in a permanent memorial to workers who died on the job at the steelworks.

Created by Branxton-based artist Will Maguire, the forged steel memorial will be unveiled in time for the 100 year anniversary of the BHP Newcastle steelworks in June and will sit near the listed administration building in the heritage precinct.

Risks of alcohol for our youngsters

What does your ultimate life look like?

A national survey found that around 90% of Australian secondary school students had tried alcohol by the age of 14 and that around 70% of 17 year olds had consumed alcohol in the month before the survey.

Alcohol acts as a central nervous system depressant and alcohol related harm comes from a combination of the amount of alcohol consumed and various factors such as age, gender, body size, nutrition, drinking experience and social factors.

The Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol based on research by the National Health and Medical Research Council state that ‘for children and young people under 18 years of age, not drinking is the safest option’ and that ‘children under 15 years of age are at greatest risk of harm from drinking.’ The guidelines are based upon health risks to teenagers, and there are legal risks and social consequences as well.

I’d like to ask you to let go of your New Years’ resolutions, which let’s be honest, you were probably never committed to in the first place.

2. If you require ‘money’ to do the things in life that are important to you, then set some money aside for the things that are important to you. For example: set up a bank account purely for holidays and another for your kids schooling, if these are the things are important to you.

3. If it’s ‘time’ that you need to do the things that are important to you, then put the things that are most important to you in your diary or calendar first, as they should be your priority and the other things can work them.

With the recent hot weather and humidity, a little extra TLC is needed to keep your pool in top condition.

“The hotter the weather gets, the more the pool is used, and the more chlorine that is required to keep it sanitised,” Swimart Australasian manager, Chris Fitzmaurice said.

“Algae blooms in the heat and chlorine is the best defence against algae. Especially now with the ongoing hot weather, pools aren’t cooling down overnight, so the chlorine demand remains high.

“If you have a salt pool, you can use the ‘super chlorinate’ button on your salt chlorinator to fix the problem.”

The safest approach is to take a pool water sample from below elbow depth to your local Swimart store to check it for balance and sanitisation.

Another demand on pool water is the level of phosphates in the water. Algae love phosphates and feed on them.

Phosphates are introduced to the pool primarily via bird and bat droppings. Roof water added into the pool and swimming costumes washed in detergent containing phosphates are other potential sources.

Warmer weather can bring algae Chlorine alone can’t eliminate phosphates. However, a chemical called Phosphate Starver will eradicate the phosphates so the chlorine can work on killing the algae.

Your local Swimart store will also be able

to advise on pH levels. If the pH is too high, you can get scaling on the surface of your pool or chlorinator.

This can be addressed by adding acid to the water.

If too low, the water will start to hurt eyes

and skin and make you feel itchy. It can also etch away the surface of the pool. This can be fixed by adding ‘buffer’ or alkali.

Correct pH levels make the pool comfortable to swim in. If pH levels are incorrect, it can affect the efficiency of the chlorine.

Raymond Terrace Jets impress in pre-season pennants he highlight of the opening round of the Beresfield No.1 grade pre-season pennant competition was the impressive win by current Newcastle District No.1 grade pennant champions the Raymond Terrace Jets. The Jets enjoyed success on all three rinks in defeating Kahibah 61/35. Australian representative Matthew Baus led the way, downing Howard Smith 21/11, Jason Stokes accounted for Tony Falcocchio 23/14 and Lennon Scott beat Bill Ahoy 17/10.

Hunter District clubs Kurri Kurri and East Cessnock also recorded solid wins. Kurri Kurri downed Kotara 55/47, with Aaron Appleby’s 24/16 win over Keiron Lott proving the difference between the two sides as Brodie Pitham edged out Martin Ball 16/14 and Brendon Baker lost 17/15 to Gavin Kelly. Contenders emerge in race to the finals PAUL ROBERTSON

W

ith the holiday break and the lucrative SCG Cup behind them, NDCA clubs are focussing on the run into the finals.

It appears that even at this stage of the season, the quest for glory in 2014/15 is over for Wallsend, Wests, Cardiff Boolaroo, Newcastle City and Waratah Mayfield.

In saying that, with 12 pre-Christmas outright defeats between them, these clubs’ performances could have a say in the makeup of the finals. Wallsend under a new captain and City with some English reinforcements could display improvement between now and then.

Here's my assessment of the top finals contenders.

MEREWETHER - predictably the Lions sit on top of the ladder and remain the favourites for the title. They have pace bowling strike power in Mark Cameron and Sam Gilmour, whilst left arm spinner Tim O’Neill can apply the brakes should opposition batsmen get on top. Their batting led by skipper Simon Moore has a lineup laced with representative players.

UNIVERSITY - a largely new look side this year, the students and appear to be the side most likely to challenge. Jesse Major and Matt Gawthrop will be key wickets for the

opposition to snare in the big games, while a deep bowling attack led by skipper Luke Bird has potential to rip deep into opposition batting.

HAMILTON WICKHAM - it took a while for Hamwicks to get into gear but with three quality all-rounders in the Webber brothers and Mark Dries, plus the classy batting of Josh Trappel, they have the potential to beat any team on their day. Flying under the radar, as opposed to being competition leaders, may actually ease some of the pressure they seemingly have put on themselves in finals in recent years.

BELMONT - three pre-Christmas outright wins have offset some poor performances against lesser opposition. They rely heavily on Newcastle skipper Mark Littlewood and veteran paceman Jace Lawson who have been sensational this season, but will need contributions from others if they are to consolidate their finals position and be a force at the business end of the year.

Of the remaining three teams with finals claims, their fate will largely depend on the continuation of the good form of key players, namely batsman Jeff Goninan for Stockton Raymond Terrace and all-rounders Joe Price and Chris Connors for Toronto Workers and Charlestown respectively.

Time will tell.
