orrowing a book from your local library is now as easy popping into your local supermarket, with Cardiff Library now located in Cardiff Shopping Centre.

The new library on the ground floor of the shopping complex gives borrowers access to modern technologies, including free wi-fi, e-readers and charging stations, as well as a wide selection of books and kids programs.

Officially opening the library last Tuesday, Lake Macquarie Mayor, Jodie Harrison praised the level of technology available to the public at the new branch.

“I must confess, when I was in primary school I wanted to be a librarian,” she said.

“I never thought I would be standing here opening a library with computers, internet, e-readers, tablets, 3D printers, mobile phone chargers, like we have right here in Cardiff.”

Cr Harrison hoped the library’s centralised location in Cardiff Shopping Centre would draw new users to the facility.

“Cardiff library has been open for 57 years and in that time there have been millions of loans – at least one million in the last 10 years alone,” she said.

“With a space like this, those numbers can only continue to grow.”

to the pleasant staff at the library,” he said. “I have been looking forward to the opening of the new library as I believe it is in a better location for the community to access.”

More time-wasting in the world of federal politics last week with the discussion over Tony Abbott's decision to reintroduce knighthoods and damehoods in Australia.

I don't have a problem with the decision, but I agree with Opposition Leader Bill Shorten when he says there are far greater priorities for the government to focus on.

Knights and Dames of the Order of Australia were stopped by the Hawke government in 1986.

I know that it's in the job description of an Opposition Leader to reject most of what the government introduces but Mr Shorten's apparent outrage and determination to reverse the decision if he gets the chance is going a bit far.

It really does fall into the "who cares" category.

Yes, it's not a necessity, but it doesn't hurt or affect anyone and wouldn't be worth the time and expense of throwing it out some years down the track.

There is the argument that it is a backward step to reintroduce something that was discarded 28 years ago. However, I think honouring people with a knighthood or damehood is actually a nice way to recognise contributions made to this country, as long they are handed out sparingly.

Mr Abbott has said the honour will only be bestowed on a maximum of four knights or dames a year.

It really does fall into the "who cares" category

Generals Quentin Bryce and Peter Cosgrove are worthy of the honour.

I want to add my best wishes to Alex McKinnon and the Newcastle Knights club following the young forward's shocking injury.

I've witnessed first-hand at Knights training the camaraderie amongst the players and know how hard something like this will affect them.

There's been some talk speculating on how long he will be out of the game for. Let's forget about that for the time being and put all our hopes into him being able get back on his feet.

You could sense there was something special about McKinnon when Wayne Bennett promoted to him to first grade at St George Illawarra in 2011 at just 19 years of age.

He made his debut in the centres against the Gold Coast and scored two tries and was one of the first players Bennett wanted to bring with him to the Knights in 2012.

McKinnon showed his toughness and maturity in 2012 by playing every match for Newcastle and has become a mainstay in the Knights' lineup.

When these accidents, as rare as they are, occur in rugby league there are always discussions on what can be done to stop it happening again.

I think it was simply an accident. Unfortunately, players will occasionally land on their head or necks. I don't think there was any intent on the part of the Melbourne player, Jordan McLean.

ystery still surrounds the death of Mayfield man Anthony O’Grady, whose hog-tied and semi-naked body was found dumped in Wickham Park last week.

Police have appealed to the public for information as they continue to determine a motive for Mr O’Grady’s killing.

“The fact that it is in a location in a public area, in the open, we are hopeful that someone may have seen something, and with that information we urge you to come forward,” Newcastle crime manager Acting Inspector Jeff Little said.

“This particular offence is not a matter of a body that someone has tried to dispose of or hide, it was out in the open and that is quite clear.”

Mr O’Grady is believed to have owned a car and boat, both of which were parked outside his Valencia Street home. The car was later found abandoned on Ash Island.

ewcastle City Council has approved the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Glebe Road and Park Avenue at Adamstown in an effort to reduce the number of accidents at the busy junction.

The existing pedestrian crossing at the north-eastern end of Park Avenue will be removed, as part of the $900,000 project, and replaced with a set of traffic lights that will allow for better pedestrian and cycle access and traffic flow along Glebe Road.

In its report, Council said a high number of accidents had been recorded at the intersection of Glebe Road with Park Avenue and Wood Street and near misses had also occurred and the pedestrian crossing.

Some Adamstown residents, who provided feedback on the plans during a community consultation period late last year, criticised the proposal claiming more needed to be done to address what they saw as the root of the traffic problems along Glebe Road and Park Avenue - the nearby railway gates at Adamstown Station. One Victoria Street resident commented, “this will do until a tunnel goes in behind the pub under the rail line."

Cr Tim Crakanthorp said the plans had changed considerably following commu-

he University of Newcastle’s new $17.3 million medical sciences building was officially opened on Monday by Federal Minister for Human Services, Senator Marise Payne and the university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen.

The purpose-built state-of-the-art Medical Sciences West building features anatomy facilities, including a 120-person lab and a specimen museum, as well as a 48 dispensing workstations for the university’s new Bachelor Of Pharmacy degree.

Professor McMillen said the world-class research and education facilities would “future-proof” the graduates passing through the building.

“We will see a next-generation learning experience for more than 3,500 students and it will return benefits to their careers as healthcare professionals as they practice in biotechnology, medicine, as pharmacists, in radiation therapy, speech pathology, dietetics and more in our region and beyond,” she said.

Ms Payne said the new facility would have wider reaching benefits for the whole country. “In the future people in the Hunter region and across Australia will benefit

Newcastle City Council has begun its search campaign for a cultural director.

The successful applicant will lead Council’s performing arts, art gallery and museum facilities.

In a statement, Newcastle City Council’s general manager, Ken Gouldthorp said Council was seeking someone who is highly regarded in national and international cultural circles to fill the new role.

“He or she will work closely with specialist heads of each facility to engage with the broader arts community, attract exhibitions, including blockbuster national shows, and maintain and grow Newcastle’s unique collections,” he said.

"The recruitment of this critical role shows Council's commitment to growing these facilities and taking them to a whole new level at a time of significant change for Newcastle.

“We are looking for a person who will establish an arts and cultural program that goes beyond the walls of existing buildings and utilises all of our assets collectively to promote Newcastle as a cultural destination.”

The search follows the controversial sacking of Newcastle Art Gallery director, Ron Ramsey and Council’s future city director, Judy Jaeger over their involvement in the transaction of the Brett Whiteley sculpture, Black Totem II. Merindah Children’s Centre at Wallsend, Elermore Vale Early Learning Centre, Hamilton Child Care Centre, Glendore Child Care Centre and Maryland Child Care and Early Education Centre will enter into five year leases in an arrangement Council said will ensure availability of childcare places across the city.

Rent will be based on a percentage of the centre’s annual turnover or a base rate of $8,873 plus 5 per cent per annum – whichever is greatest.

upporters of the Newcastle Art Gallery are determined to clear the name of sacked gallery director, Ron Ramsey and Newcastle City Council’s former future city director Judy Jaeger.

More than 200 concerned art-lovers met last week to “hear the truth” about the former staff members’ involvement in the transaction of the Brett Whiteley sculpture, Black Totem II, at a public meeting at City Hall.

Speaking to the Post after the meeting, organiser, Linda Drummond said the night was full of “explosive” revelations, with councillors and members of the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation speaking frankly about their involvement in the saga.

One such revelation, outlined in documents tabled at the meeting, was that Council had not contacted Lowensteins Arts Management, the firm that

advised Whiteley’s widow, Wendy Whiteley to donate the work to the gallery through the Federal Government’s Cultural Gifts program, to discuss the details of the transaction prior to launching an independent investigation.

According to the documents, a representative from Lowensteins advised Ms Whiteley that “the process proposed was totally transparent and with the letter of current tax law.”

Ms Drummond said she was appalled by the lack of consultation between Council and Lowensteins.

“From my perspective, my first point of call would have been Lowensteins,” she said.

“Judy [Jaeger], Ron [Ramsey], and the Foundation have be defamed, and by Council saying they have acted illegally, they’ve defamed Lowensteins, the Whiteley Foundation, and by extension, the Art Gallery of NSW. “Good, honest, hardworking people have had their name smeared and besmirched and we aren’t going to stand for it."

The meeting resolved to forward information about the transaction process to the commissioner of taxation to investigate and determine whether it breached appropriate tax rules or if the Foundation had acted outside its trust deed.

A 96-place childcare centre will be built on Prospect Road at Garden Suburb, despite last-ditch attempts from residents to stop the development going ahead.

Lake Macquarie Council voted 9 – 3 to approve the plan amid concerns that the large centre would create traffic chaos on along the suburban street.

Cr Laurie Coghlan said in order for Council to provide services across the city, some residential streets would be busy at times.

Council resolved to introduce left-hand turn only from the centre's driveway to allay concerns about the nearby blind corner.

Tantrum Youth Arts artistic director, Amy Hardingham said she was looking forward to assisting in the delivery of the library’s reading programs through the new partnership.

“We provide a huge range of creative opportunities for children and young people in Newcastle and by working with the library we are able to extend our services even further,” she said.

“Our associate director, Lucy Shepherd, will be a co-presented for the Wacky program.

“Lucy is passionate about guiding preschoolers through creative adventures, something she did a lot of during her time working at NIDA, and something she continues through Tantrum’s pre-school drama program.”

Newcastle City Council’s public program coordinator, Carol Edmonds, said making reading fun was essential to fostering keen young readers.

“The children associate the positive experience of the performances with the library and many begin to develop a regular habit of using their local library,” she said.

“In time, this will also help to foster their literacy skills.

Karen Eastwood entertains children as part of the Wacky Wombat reading program “To help parents reinforce the message and the positive experience of the performance, we encourage parents to borrow the books that the program dramatizes, take them home and read them to their children.”

The next Wacky Wombat program will be held at Wallsend Library on Wednesday, April 9 from 10:30am.

Smoke alarm safety Households in the Hunter are being urged to revisit fire safety procedures as new research released by Duracell reveals that as many as 70 per cent of parents are not planning ahead in case of fire and proactively changing their smoke alarm batteries every year.

New figures also show that NSW fire services attended more than 4,000 house fires across the state in 2013 – an average of 77 residential fires per week.

As well as destruction of property, 21 people lost their lives. “A fire can take hold in less than three minutes, filling your home with deadly smoke. All it takes is a few breaths of smoke before you’re unconscious. A working smoke alarm gives you vital seconds to get out before you’re overcome,” Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg Mullins said.

The survey also found that 43 per cent of NSW parents only changed smoke alarm batteries when prompted by the smoke alarm beep, indicating the battery had gone flat or that the unit had passed its use-by date. “Our message is simple: only working smoke alarms saves lives. When Daylight Saving ends on April 6, change your smoke alarm battery as well as your clock.”

Fire & Rescue NSW and the Rural Fire Service, are encouraging Australians to have a working smoke alarm and a practiced home escape plan. The ‘Change your clock, change your smoke alarm battery’ campaign to mark the end of daylight saving this Sunday is a reminder to help Australians increase their fire safety awareness in the lead-up to the winter fire season, a high risk fire time.

ith the cooler months fast approaching, it may be time to visit your GP to receive an influenza vaccine.

More than 18,000 hospitalisations are attributed to influenza each year and between 1,500 and 3,500 people die as a result of the virus annually – more than the amount of fatalities caused by motor vehicle accidents on Australian roads.

Hunter Medicare Local clinical director, Dr Lee Fong said it was important, especially for pregnant woman, the elderly and Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders, to get the jab each year.

“Even if you were vaccinated last year, it is important to be re-vaccinated now as protection is not long lasting,” Dr Fong explained.

The 2014 vaccination contains protection against three strains of the virus, including H1N1 or ‘swine flu’, which continues to cause significant illness, particularly among young people.

According to Dr Fong, the common story that a flu vaccination gives you the flu is a myth and in reality, most people suffer no side-effects after receiving the vaccine.

“Between one and 10 per cent [of people] may experience fever and malaise as the

“One of the common reasons for refusal [of the vaccine] is that the person ‘never gets flu’ and doesn’t see a need for vaccination.

be responsible for spreading to workmates and loved ones.”

NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner said although most parts of the state have been experiencing warm weather, it was important to be “winter wise” by practicing healthy behaviours, such as covering your mouth to cough or sneeze and washing hands regularly, and getting vaccinated against the flu.

Compete for Lake Macquarie

As the host city, Lake Macquarie can select a full delegation of up to 90 athletes, competing across eight sports – swimming, gymnastic, athletics, football, sailing, water polo, golf and BMX. Lake Macquarie Mayor, Jodie Harrison said competing in the Games would be an amazing experience for young athletes.

“Competing in the International Children’s Games is a once in a lifetime experience, but this year is even more significant as it is in Team Lake Macquarie’s home town,” she said.

“The Games bring children from different cultural backgrounds together to learn from each other and make friendships that can last a lifetime.

“I encourage young sportspeople from Lake Macquarie to take advantage of this opportunity and become involved.”

Athletes must be between 12 and 15 years of age on December 31, 2014 and either live or go to school in Lake Macquarie to be eligible to apply.

Applications for all sports close on Wednesday, April 30, with the exception of football, which will run a trial day on Monday, April 7.

ork will begin this week on a new state-of-the-art football facility at Speers Point.

The Lake Macquarie Football Facility, tipped to become a football hub for the Hunter region, will feature 10 five-a-side synthetic pitches and two full-size synthetic football fields.

Lake Macquarie Mayor, Jodie Harrison said the facility would play host to hundreds of young athletes during the International Children’s Games this December.

“The timing is going to be really tight for the International Children’s Games and I certainly hope this is going to be ready,” she said.

“It will be the first big use of this facility and I’m looking forward to having something so important to the region here [in Lake Macquarie].”

Member for Swansea, Garry Edwards said the facility would attract national and international teams and act as a breeding ground for local talent.

“You look at people like Craig Johnson, he’s hung his boots up these days but

It’s been a year since the first green waste bins rolled into Lake Macquarie suburbs, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank residents for their role in making the service a great success.

Every household that has used the green waste service correctly has contributed to achieving impressive environmental and cost saving outcomes for the City of Lake Macquarie.

Since its launch in April 2013, the fortnightly service has diverted more than 75,000 cubic metres – equivalent to 30 Olympic-sized swimming pools – of garden waste from landfill and processed it into mulch and compost. This has resulted in carbon emission savings of 22,500 tonnes, which is equal to taking 5300 cars off the road for a year.

The garden waste collected from our residents’ green waste bins has had a contamination rate of consistently less than half a per cent. This excellent result, which compares favourably with other local government areas, means that high-quality compost and mulch is produced, which can be used on parks, sporting grounds and in agriculture.

These are outstanding results for a City determined to take a smarter approach to waste.

Council’s green waste service is just one component of its comprehensive waste strategy, which has put Lake Macquarie on track to achieve a 75 per cent reduction in waste to landfill from City and Council operations by 2023.

Effective and economical management of our City’s waste will continue to be a focus in 2014-2015 as Council prepares to fully implement its green waste system to enable collection and processing of food waste from 2015-2016.

he Newcastle Youth Orchestra will launch its 2014 season this weekend with a colourful performance of Places You Will Go. Part of their Kids Classics concert series, the one-hour performance will explore music from across the globe, including works by Brahms, Copland and Saint-Saens, through a 50-piece orchestra, giant puppetry, local Celtic fiddlers, Pumpkin Juice and local choir, Do-Re-Mi. Newcastle Youth Orchestra project manager, Michael Power said he had been surprised by the orchestra’s ability to attract such a diverse crowd in its debut year in 2013.

“There was no guarantee of what members would even turn up to play in an orchestra when we started,” he said.

“When we got 500 or 600 people turning up to our concerts it gave us goosebumps at the time.”

Mr Power told the Post he was optimistic that 2014 would be just as successful for the group as 2013 and said the program would appeal to all ages.

“Not only kids, but many parents may have never heard classical music,” he said.

Some health foods are killing us. Most people are familiar with macro nutrients; these are the broad groups called protein, fats and carbohydrates. None of these groups are bad. You need all of them to live.

I read a study the other day that said much of people’s knowledge on fitness topics comes from media and advertising. Things like infomercials are guiding our decisions on eating and exercise! We are consuming more ‘low fat’ products than ever. So why are we still getting fatter? Low cholesterol is another line, some people now think this is a deadly poison.

Cholesterol is essential in our bodies and helps repair our cells.

Just think for a minute; you have a business trying to sell a new food in a supermarket. The shelves are bulging with them already so how do you get anybody to look at your product?

One angle is make it sound healthier than the competition.

It’s almost funny to see the ads for a processed, sugar-filled, nutrient-devoid bar saying they’re so much healthier than that other processed, sugar-filled bar because it has ‘real strawberry’ powdered concentrate.

Much better to consume healthy, proper, unprocessed food.

This will get you the macro nutrients and just as importantly, the micro nutrients. These are all the vitamins and minerals that actually provide nutrition to your body. Without them the millions of processes your body constantly needs to perform can’t happen.

Imagine planting two similar trees; one in a pot full of sand that gets a drip of water now and then. It’s alive but only just.

The other is planted in dark, composted, nutrient-rich, well drained soil and given fresh water every day. How do you think they would compare in a year’s time?

And just taking a vitamin tablet isn’t enough. Take an apple, it has thousands of compounds, from quercetin, a powerful antioxidant that reduces cardiovascular risk, to flavonoids and phytochemicals that fight cancer. We’re not even sure what half these things do yet. But our body has evolved eating them for thousands of years and it knows what to do.

The influenza virus is one of the world’s simplest yet most devastating illnesses. One of the best ways to protect against the flu is to have an annual flu vaccination.

The flu virus has the amazing ability to mutate. Each year there may be several strains circulating within the community and at least some of those strains may be different to the ones in the previous year.

Each year the flu vaccination is manufactured to protect against the most endemic influenza viruses currently circulating. So even if you had a flu vaccination last year, it is important to update your immunisation to ensure that you are covered against the circulating strains this year.

The idea that you can develop the flu from the flu vaccine is a myth. It is not possible to get the flu from the flu vaccine because the vaccine does not contain any active (live) virus.

However, some people can experience short-term side effects, including pain, redness and swelling at the injection site, low-grade fever and muscle aches.

This can usually be treated effectively with paracetamol. It is still possible to catch the common cold because the flu vaccination only offers protection against influenza virus strains, which are completely different to the viruses causing colds.

The flu vaccination is generally very safe and is highly recommended for anyone 65 years or over and anyone with a pre-existing medical condition that may put them at greater risk of serious complication from the flu.

However, anyone is able to receive the flu vaccination and, in fact, the more people who receive the vaccination the less chance there is of the virus spreading within the community.

It’s something a lot of us normally put on the back burner or just assume that compulsory superannuation contributions and government support will take care of.

However, with Australia’s aging population, this is not the case for most.

Australians are living longer than ever. The average life expectancy has increased by two and half years in the past decade and the older we get the more our life expectancy increases. A 60-year-old baby boomer today, can expect approximately 32 years in retirement.

So how long can you afford to live? If you consider, even just general living expenses such as food, health care, transport and accommodation, you’re looking in the millions of dollars. Food for example: three meals a day x two retired people x $10 per meal x 365 days a year x 32 years in retirement = $700,800! Plus, if you are like most hard-working Australians you are also going to want to enjoy your retirement, maybe a European holiday, regular golf, a new car or boat, a holiday house…

Tips for increasing your super for retirement: make additional super contributions, review your current super fund, if you have multiple super funds consolidate them and look for any lost super you might have. If all of this seems a bit overwhelming, complex and time consuming then you may need to consider professional financial advice.

This week we are celebrating Purple Day, an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide.

Many people do not understand exactly what epilepsy is. To say a person has epilepsy simply means that a person has shown a tendency to have recurring seizures. Therefore, when a person has a single seizure this does not necessarily mean that they have epilepsy.

Some 10% of the population are at risk of experiencing a seizure during their lifetime, while 3-4% will go on to be diagnosed with epilepsy.

According to Epilepsy Australia, it is a common condition in our community and can develop at any age, regardless of gender or ethnic group. Research suggests that 3-4% of the Australian population will develop epilepsy at some stage in their lives.

Current research has identified that in many cases of epilepsy in very young children, genetics play an important role. But genetics can be a factor in developing epilepsy at any age. It appears that certain people are simply more prone to having seizures than others.

Your can discuss this condition with your pharmacist.

The NSW Government’s recent decision to close the Stockton Centre, a residential facility for high-needs patients, forces us to consider how the government should care for those who aren’t able to care for themselves.

When we talk about a social safety net and the importance of protecting systems such as Medicare, the focus is often on what support we would need if we were injured or unwell. The campaign against the closure of the Stockton Centre reminds us that the question should also be ‘What would you do if someone you love is injured or unwell?’

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that there are 2.7 million Australians currently caring for a relative. This includes caring for aged parents, people with a disability and people with acute illness.

It has been widely reported that the State Government is attempting to outsource the operation of the Stockton Centre, and indeed all state-run disability services, to private industry. Given this it is worth considering: how do you make a profit from caring for the disabled? The only way a private company (whether not-for-profit or not) could break even running disability services is through reducing wages or cutting services.

Nurses and disability health care professionals are already stretched to the limit. Before the operation of the Stockton Centre changes hands the community needs to be consulted. We need to know what services a private company would be willing to cut that a government-run centre wouldn’t.

he Hunter Sports Centre’s vacation care program has gone from strength to strength since commencing in 2011.

The variety of the programs on offer at the centre on Stockland Drive at Glendale ensures all children are well catered for throughout the entire day. Utilising the Centre’s exceptional facilities the children participate in daily gymnastics activities, outdoor activities on the track and field and arts and craft.

The vacation care operates under the National Quality Frame work and is an inexpensive way to keep the kids entertained these school holidays. The Hunter Sports Centre is accredited and approved under the Child Care System so eligible families can claim the Child Care Rebate & Child Care Benefit.

Volvo Cars is conducting research into driver sensors in order to create cars that get to know their drivers. Through systems that can recognise and distinguish whether a driver is tired or inattentive, the car of the future can become even safer. Examples of this include technology that can detect closed eyes or what the driver is looking at.

"This will enable the driver to be able to rely a bit more on their car, and know that it will help them when needed," explains Per Landfors, engineer at Volvo Cars and project leader for driver support functions.

By placing a sensor on the dashboard to monitor aspects such as which direction the driver is looking, how open their eyes are, as well as their head position and angle, it is possible to develop precise safety systems that detect the driver's state and adjust the car accordingly.

This also means that the car will ensure that it does not stray out of the lane or get too close to the car in front when the driver is not paying attention, as well as being able to wake a driver who is falling asleep.

Some of the current systems that can be included are Lane Keeping Aid, Collision warning with full auto brake and Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist.

The technology is based on a sensor mounted on the dashboard in front of the driver. Small LEDs illuminate the driver with infrared light, which is then monitored by the sensor. Infrared light is just outside the wavelengths that the human eye can see, which means that the person behind the wheel doesn't notice it at all.

Taking part in football, rugby league, rugby union, touch football and AFL throughout the day, the high-school aged participants were able to learn some of the skills involved in each sport at Smith Park in Hamilton.

A highlight was the appearance of Wallaroo Mollie Gray who was recently selected in the national rugby union side.

occer fans in the Hunter will be treated to a visit from defending champions Japan in next year’s Asian Cup tournament.

Their opponents in the January 12 match at Hunter Stadium will be the winner of the AFC Challenge Cup with the final of that tournament to be played at the end of May. Newcastle will host a Group A match between Oman and Kuwait on January 17 as well as the second semi-final on January 27 and the playoff for third and fourth on January 30.

If Australia, who are drawn to play Kuwait, Oman and Korea Republic, finish second in Group A and win their quarterfinal, they will feature in the semi-final at Hunter Stadium.

The Newcastle Jets' finals hopes on the line after a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat in Perth

T

he Newcastle Jets were defeated 2-1 by Perth Glory at nib Stadium on Sunday night. After a scoreless first half, the Jets survived a close shave less than a minute after the restart of play, with Nebojsa Marinkovic’s misdirected cross forcing Ben Kennedy to make a sharp save at his near post.

Emile Heskey rose well to meet Adam Taggart’s cross to the back post in the fiftyfirst minute, but the former England international was unable to get enough power behind his header to beat Jack Duncan.

Heskey was heavily involved again in the sixty-second minute helping the Jets to fashion the opening goal of the contest.

The former Liverpool striker did a superb job of holding the ball up on the edge of the penalty area before picking out David Carney’s overlapping run on the left flank.

Carney delivered a delightful first-time cross to the back post with pin-point accuracy that allowed Taggart to slide in and blast the ball into the roof of the net on the half valley, giving the Jets a 1-0 lead.

Perth were almost back on level terms 10 minutes later, with Davydas Sernas swinging in a dangerous free-kick from the right flank.

The ball looked destined to nestle in the bottom corner of the net, but for a crucial intervention from the outstretched palm of Kennedy, which deflected the ball onto the post and away from danger.

Kennedy was left stranded in the seventy-eighth minute when Brandon O’Neill unleashed a vicious swerving shot from 30 metres out, but luckily for the Jets goalkeeper the ball skipped inches wide of the post.

The Glory were back on level terms six minutes later, with Marinkovic bending a free-kick from 20 metres out over the wall and into the top corner of the net, giving Kennedy no chance.

Less than 60 seconds after equalising, Perth hit the front through Chris Harold.

Michael Thwaite played a neat ball down the line to Sidnei Sciola who swung in a cross with his left boot that was met by a powerful header from Chris Harold to give Perth a 2-1 advantage.

Despite their best efforts, the shellshocked Jets were unable to find a way past the Glory defence in the dying minutes and the home side secured all three points.

The Jets are now one point off the top-six with two games remaining.

Knights beat premiers Under 20s undefeated

The home team received a boost prior to kick-off with second-rower Joe Tapine named to start in his first match for 2014 after an off-season hernia injury. With Tapine back in the line-up, the Knights now have their strongest team available and they played with plenty of confidence in the opening exchanges.

The Knights opened the scoring in the 9th minute when halfback Jaelen Feeney ran 40 metres and score under the posts.

Newcastle crossed again in the 9th minute via fullback Jake Mamo who picked off a brilliant pass from Tapine to score next to the uprights.

nspired by their best defensive effort of the season, the Newcastle Knights NSW Cup side recorded an impressive 23-16 victory over last year's premiers the Cronulla Sharks at Hunter Stadium on Sunday.

In a highly competitive match against a strong Sharks side, it was the Knights' defence that proved the difference at the backend of the game.

Fullback Honeti Tuha was outstanding for the home side in attack and defence, while Tyler Randell, Pat Mata'utia, Chris Houston and Zane Tetevano all came up with big plays when it mattered most.

The team's seven-point win was sealed by veteran lock Matt Hilder, who slotted a field goal from 35 metres out with just 11 minutes remaining. The result consolidates the Knights’ top four position on the competition table.

Newcastle had the dream start to the match when halfback Danny Kerr crossed in just the second minute. Kerr finished off a frantic play to score. Mantellato added the extras to give the Knights an early 6-0 lead.

The home side crossed again four minutes later when Mantellato did it all himself to beat three defenders and score in the eastern corner to put Newcastle up 10-0 after 10 minutes.

Newcastle continued their dominance in the second half, with halfback Feeney strolling over to score after just three minutes. Donovan converted the try to stretch the Knights' lead out to 42-4.

Second-rower Harry Pondekas scored in the 70th minute to extend the lead out to 46-10. Newcastle's win was capped off with two late tries, one to prop Luke Yates in the 76th minute and the other to centre Chance Peni in the dying seconds.

The Knights will take on the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville on Monday afternoon at 4.45pm.

Emotion-charged victory Knights first win of the season a fitting tribute to injured back-rower Alex McKinnon

T

he Knights are up and running for 2014 with the emotion-charged 30-0 win over Cronulla at Hunter Stadium on Sunday showing the 0-3 start to the season was not a true indication of the side’s ability.

Nobody knew for sure how the Knights’ on-field performance would stand up after Alex McKinnon’s injury, but it was clear from the opening exchanges that the home side had come to play.

Coach Wayne Bennett joined his players on-field shortly before kick-off as the crowd was asked to ‘Rise for Alex’ and applaud the injured back-rower.

News emerged on Sunday evening of a small advancement in McKinnon’s recovery with the 22-year-old assisted ventilation removed, allowing him to communicate with family.

He will continue to undergo intensive physiotherapy which it is hoped will allow a transfer to Sydney.

Bennett, speaking at the post-match press conference, said he felt “flat” after the mentally-draining week: “I wouldn’t have cared if we’d have won or lost the game the way I feel”.

The mastercoach admitted that seeing the support for McKinnon from fans had caused a swell of emotion. “I didn't want to look at too many of them to be honest with you, it wasn't good for my eyes, I was starting to get tears,” Bennett said.

Captain Kurt Gidley and a number of Knights players headed to Melbourne on Monday to visit their stricken teammate.

As good as the Knights performance was, Cronulla were a poor imitation of the team that made the second week of the finals last year.

However, missing from the Sharks line-up on Sunday were Paul Gallen, Luke Lewis, Beau Ryan, Jeff Robson, Anthony Tupou and Sosaia Feki.

The Knights head to Townsville to play the North Queensland Cowboys on Monday night.

Kick-off is at 7pm with the match live on Fox Sports.
