ake Macquarie Mayor Jodie Harrison has announced her intention to run for pre-selection as the Labor candidate for the seat of Charlestown in next year's State election. If preselected, Ms Harrison will face off against incumbent Charlestown MP Andrew Cornwell, who holds the seat on a margin of nearly 10 per cent. Ms Harrison, who became the first female mayor of Lake Macquarie in 2012, said the Liberal Party had let the community down. "The support given to the Liberal at the last State Election has not been reciprocated and many people in the Hunter feel let down," she said. "I too have been very disappointed with the way the Liberal Party has performed, particularly the way Baird and the Liberals have pillaged our state-owned assets and would back critical services." If elected, Ms Harrison will be permitted to serve out her term as Mayor of Lake Macquarie. "I acknowledge that being Mayor and being a candidate for Parliament will potentially alter my relationship with Council," Ms Harrison said. "I can assure staff and residents that my approach will continue to be proper and fair." Yasmin Catley has been preselected as the Labor candidate for the seat of Swansea and Melissa Cleary will run in the seat of Lake Macquarie.
